00:00:18.939 --> 00:00:24.059
Listen, if you have your Bibles open, I'm going to invite you to turn with me to the book of Matthew, chapter four.

00:00:24.140 --> 00:00:27.019
We're going to continue in this series called What Would Jesus Post?

00:00:27.100 --> 00:00:36.780
And we're looking at contemporary events, current events that are happening in our culture right now, and seeing, okay, where where does the Bible intersect these truths?

00:00:36.939 --> 00:00:54.219
And what we're seeing is that in a world that is created by sovereign, power, omniscient God, he cannot be hid, which means we can always find ways to connect and have stories and conversations with people about the work of Jesus in our life.

00:00:54.380 --> 00:00:59.019
And like you may be asking yourself, why are we preaching like this?

00:00:59.179 --> 00:01:02.299
Like why are we covering this material as we are?

00:01:02.460 --> 00:01:07.979
And the main reason that I would give to you to that question is because this is what Jesus did.

00:01:08.219 --> 00:01:11.500
And I don't know about you, but like I want to do what Jesus did, right?

00:01:11.819 --> 00:01:16.620
Jesus, we're told in the Gospels, preached using parables.

00:01:16.859 --> 00:01:20.379
He took something that people were familiar with in their everyday context.

00:01:20.460 --> 00:01:22.620
Sometimes it was just an everyday story.

00:01:22.780 --> 00:01:24.620
Other times it was a news event.

00:01:24.859 --> 00:01:26.859
And he preached, he made that connection.

00:01:27.019 --> 00:01:27.819
This is what he did.

00:01:27.980 --> 00:01:33.420
In fact, Mark tells us that Jesus did not preach without using a parable.

00:01:33.900 --> 00:01:37.260
I repent because I've not always done that.

00:01:37.420 --> 00:01:50.620
Sometimes I will stand up and I'll just rutely start teaching stuff without making a connection to God's creation and showing how that this text applies and is lived out today.

00:01:50.859 --> 00:01:53.019
God's word matters to this very moment.

00:01:53.260 --> 00:01:53.900
Amen.

00:01:54.459 --> 00:01:56.780
So let me tell you something that I learned this week.

00:01:57.019 --> 00:01:58.700
I learned that I'm going to give you this truth.

00:01:58.780 --> 00:02:05.260
It's not going to be on the screen, but I want to give you the truth, and then I think I will need to explain it to you.

00:02:05.500 --> 00:02:06.540
Here it is.

00:02:08.139 --> 00:02:14.060
Carpet will lie to you, but hardwood floor will always tell you the truth.

00:02:14.860 --> 00:02:17.980
Here's what I learned because we moved into our new home.

00:02:18.060 --> 00:02:22.379
And of course, before we moved in, uh, you know, we got all the furniture there.

00:02:22.459 --> 00:02:27.420
And you know, the very first thing you do with hardwood floor is you do what, ladies?

00:02:27.899 --> 00:02:29.899
Cover it with rugs.

00:02:30.060 --> 00:02:30.860
That's what you do.

00:02:31.019 --> 00:02:34.139
Now, we, I don't know why you do that, but that's just what you do.

00:02:34.220 --> 00:02:38.699
And so we haven't quite done that yet, and we're still getting things moved in.

00:02:38.779 --> 00:02:40.939
And so I'll get up and I'll walk around.

00:02:41.100 --> 00:02:43.019
Kim's gonna hurt me for saying this to you.

00:02:43.100 --> 00:02:47.259
I want you to know I make sacrifices to bring you the truth of the word of God.

00:02:47.819 --> 00:02:53.180
I I walk around the floor my bare feet, and and like I can feel like stuff in the floor.

00:02:53.339 --> 00:02:55.100
Now we're moving in, okay?

00:02:55.259 --> 00:02:58.939
I mean, that's there's a lot happening, and there's some home remodeling stuff going on.

00:02:59.019 --> 00:03:02.220
So I want you to know if the floors are dirty, it's all my fault.

00:03:02.300 --> 00:03:05.339
But I I can feel that as I'm walking around on the hardwood floor.

00:03:05.500 --> 00:03:11.579
Now, I didn't feel that at our previous place where we had a great deal of carpet, and the reason is is because carpet will lie to you.

00:03:11.819 --> 00:03:14.220
Carpet will tell you, you see now, right?

00:03:14.459 --> 00:03:15.500
Carpet will lie to you.

00:03:15.660 --> 00:03:18.139
Carpet will tell you everything's fine, it's great.

00:03:18.220 --> 00:03:21.180
You don't put that vacuum cleaner away, you don't need it right now.

00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:24.060
But hardwood floor will tell you the truth.

00:03:24.379 --> 00:03:29.420
I think that our, first off, God's word is like a hardwood floor.

00:03:29.579 --> 00:03:30.699
It will tell you the truth.

00:03:30.860 --> 00:03:36.540
You may not want to hear it, but when you walk across it, it's like, no, yeah, you you you got some things happening here.

00:03:36.779 --> 00:03:41.899
But I think also the conscience that God has given us will tell us the truth.

00:03:42.060 --> 00:03:44.379
We have to suppress it, Paul tells us.

00:03:44.459 --> 00:03:53.339
We have to suppress the truth of God if we're going to continue in life that violates the standards and the rules for human flourishing.

00:03:53.579 --> 00:04:01.420
Now, the the article that we're going to be glancing at this morning is a clear example of that.

00:04:01.660 --> 00:04:07.579
The article was written, it's in the Atlantic, and it's written by one of their staff writers, a man named James Parker.

00:04:07.819 --> 00:04:12.779
James talks about being at a coffee shop and he has his laptop open.

00:04:12.939 --> 00:04:18.060
He's probably knows he needs to write something and can't figure out what to write, so he winds up writing this.

00:04:18.139 --> 00:04:29.339
He says he's looking at the screen, this nebulous void, and he keeps waiting on emails to pop up, and he keeps closing and opening up programs the same way that you and I do on our phone.

00:04:29.420 --> 00:04:34.459
And then it kind of dawns on him that this just doesn't feel right.

00:04:34.939 --> 00:04:41.740
That there's something that feels wrong with the way that we engage with technology.

00:04:42.139 --> 00:04:48.060
But then he asks himself the question which of the seven deadly sins is this?

00:04:48.220 --> 00:04:57.420
If this is wrong, if this feels, if the hardwood floor of reality is telling me that the way I'm interacting with my technology is not right, which wrong is it?

00:04:57.580 --> 00:05:00.620
Which one of the seven deadly sins is this?

00:05:00.780 --> 00:05:09.580
Now, as a good Protestant, you probably aren't as familiar with the seven deadly sins as our Catholic neighbors.

00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:15.420
But just to give you a brief history, the originally the list wasn't seven, it was eight.

00:05:15.660 --> 00:05:31.660
It was uh originated, it was contrived by a um desert monk named uh um Evagoras Ponticus, and then later refined down to seven by an individual named Gregory the Great.

00:05:31.819 --> 00:05:42.540
And so the list as we have it today, this may be familiar to you, the seven deadly sins pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, don't know anything about that one, uh, wrath and sloth.

00:05:42.699 --> 00:06:03.500
And so the question that Parker was wrestling with is which of the seven deadly sins does this experience of opening up your phone and waiting for something to happen and then immediately closing down an app and reopening it and surfing for something to do and the scrolling that that we all partake in.

00:06:03.660 --> 00:06:05.100
Like, where does that fit into here?

00:06:05.259 --> 00:06:13.259
Well, uh Parker points out that some of it could be pride as of the way we post, greed with the way that we envy what other people have.

00:06:13.340 --> 00:06:14.939
There's certainly some lust.

00:06:15.180 --> 00:06:17.100
Gentlemen, be very, very careful.

00:06:17.420 --> 00:06:18.300
Very, very careful.

00:06:18.379 --> 00:06:19.580
Like there's some of that, right?

00:06:19.660 --> 00:06:20.540
We all know it.

00:06:20.699 --> 00:06:36.780
Uh, and then, of course, uh uh, you know, uh certainly quite a bit of wrath as we surf social media and maybe even a little bit of sloth, but there's not like one thing that defines what we're doing with our technology, even though that we know that it's wrong.

00:06:36.939 --> 00:06:38.620
And Parker points this out.

00:06:38.699 --> 00:06:40.620
He realizes this, and so he raises the question.

00:06:40.699 --> 00:06:42.939
He says, So have we finally done it at last?

00:06:43.100 --> 00:06:51.180
You, me, the kids, after 1,500 years, have we finally created an eighth deadly sin?

00:06:51.819 --> 00:07:18.780
Now, I want to kind of wrestle with this this morning because um I think what we will observe out of this article, but more importantly, out of God's word, is that the innovations that we create, the new stuff that you and I make as evolved individuals, really it's it's all leveraged to make sin more accessible to us.

00:07:19.580 --> 00:07:22.939
Now, originally, of course, there weren't seven deadly sins.

00:07:23.100 --> 00:07:25.100
Scripture doesn't give us seven.

00:07:25.180 --> 00:07:27.020
Uh, scripture only gives us three.

00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:31.020
We read about it in 1 John chapter 2, verse number 16.

00:07:31.259 --> 00:07:32.460
We're on our way to Matthew 4.

00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:34.220
I promise you, I wouldn't lie to you about that.

00:07:34.540 --> 00:07:36.139
Here's what here's how John describes it.

00:07:36.300 --> 00:07:48.620
John says, For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh, and the desires of the eyes, and the pride of the life, of life, is not from the Father.

00:07:48.860 --> 00:07:51.340
Now, if it's not from the Father, we have a word for that.

00:07:51.420 --> 00:07:52.300
What is it?

00:07:52.540 --> 00:07:53.660
All right, sin, right?

00:07:53.740 --> 00:07:56.060
If it's not of God, then it's it's sin.

00:07:56.139 --> 00:08:03.420
And since it's not of the Father, there's only one other source that it comes from, and it comes from this cosmos, this fallen world that we exist in.

00:08:03.580 --> 00:08:16.540
And so if you remember your King James Version translation of this, it's rendered that these three things are all that's in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.

00:08:16.780 --> 00:08:28.699
Now, if we were to define these words, these experiences today, we would give them these three terms, these three infinitive descriptions that is to feel.

00:08:28.780 --> 00:08:34.860
All that's in the world is things that we want to feel, that we want to have, that we want to be.

00:08:35.259 --> 00:08:42.779
Now, there's really no experience of sin that can't be plugged into one of these three categories because this is the root.

00:08:42.860 --> 00:08:52.300
If if the seven deadly sins are the final product of temptation, then these three temptations are the tributaries that feed them.

00:08:52.460 --> 00:08:54.300
This is this is what we do.

00:08:54.460 --> 00:09:00.700
So, in other words, what I'm suggesting to you is that that sins aren't really something that you reach for.

00:09:00.860 --> 00:09:08.060
Like you're not really, you're not really after the thing, the experience, the woman, the image, the new toy, right?

00:09:08.379 --> 00:09:09.019
The anger.

00:09:09.100 --> 00:09:10.220
You're not you're not in for that.

00:09:10.300 --> 00:09:15.899
You're in for you're in for these things that are in the world.

00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:24.220
You're pursuing, you're pursuing feeling something, you're pursuing having something, or above all, you're pursuing being something.

00:09:25.259 --> 00:09:50.940
Now we see the example of this uh in scripture over and over again, but the problem that you and I live in in this fallen state actually actually comes and actually originated, it was created because Eve experienced this temptation, these temptations to feel something, to have something, to be something.

00:09:51.259 --> 00:10:11.419
Genesis gives us the account, tells us that when she saw the fruit, the lust of the eyes, and that it was good for eating, that it would have it would be tasteful, lust of the flesh, and it could make one wise, the pride of life, that then she took it and she ate of it.

00:10:11.659 --> 00:10:17.500
And so I think the point that I'm trying to make to you is that number one, none of this stuff is new.

00:10:17.740 --> 00:10:26.139
Yeah, we create new ways to sin and to violate God's standards almost on a monthly basis at this point.

00:10:26.379 --> 00:10:32.700
But the truth is the way we do it and what we're after is not new at all.

00:10:33.259 --> 00:10:38.779
Now, in a way that's good because that tells us that if it's not new, then the old solutions can work still.

00:10:39.019 --> 00:10:46.779
We don't have to innovate new responses to all of this stuff that comes at us from all of these different directions.

00:10:47.019 --> 00:10:49.580
The the old ways still work.

00:10:50.779 --> 00:10:54.620
Someone with gray hair in this room wanted to say amen right there, but you didn't.

00:10:54.860 --> 00:10:57.500
The old ways still work.

00:10:57.659 --> 00:10:59.500
They're tried and they're tested.

00:10:59.820 --> 00:11:01.180
Jesus used them.

00:11:01.340 --> 00:11:02.460
Thank you very much.

00:11:02.700 --> 00:11:05.740
Jesus used them whenever he was tempted.

00:11:05.980 --> 00:11:14.620
So here's what I want to do in the few minutes that we have together is I want us to walk through the temptation of Jesus after the baptism.

00:11:14.860 --> 00:11:19.659
And I want to see how he managed temptation.

00:11:19.899 --> 00:11:30.220
And so that when you and I face something so insidious as technology can be, that we develop a plan for how to manage it.

00:11:30.460 --> 00:11:35.820
I mean, can we just acknowledge for a moment that we are like James Parker?

00:11:35.980 --> 00:11:40.220
I mean, like I do this, I open up my tablet and I'm looking for something to do.

00:11:40.300 --> 00:11:41.180
I want to be efficient.

00:11:41.259 --> 00:11:44.620
I know I should be doing something, but I don't want to get off the couch.

00:11:44.700 --> 00:11:46.060
And so I open up my tablet.

00:11:46.220 --> 00:11:46.940
Anybody with me?

00:11:47.180 --> 00:11:51.500
Open up my tablet or my phone, and I'll start cycling, scrolling, finding something to do.

00:11:51.580 --> 00:11:55.980
And then I get into this little cycle, this pit, this rut that I can't get out of.

00:11:56.060 --> 00:12:03.340
And I might not be able to name which one of the seven deadly sins that occurs at that moment, but I know it's not right.

00:12:03.500 --> 00:12:11.980
Because three hours later, I'm still sitting there trying to figure out, you know, what color of rug I want to put down to cover up the dust and the floor that I've made.

00:12:12.060 --> 00:12:15.500
But, anyways, Matthew chapter 4, verse 1.

00:12:15.659 --> 00:12:18.060
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit.

00:12:18.220 --> 00:12:21.580
Notice this was not an ambush, this was an appointment.

00:12:21.820 --> 00:12:27.500
Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

00:12:27.659 --> 00:12:29.659
That was his reason for being there.

00:12:29.899 --> 00:12:38.220
You know, we can stop and ask the question why Jesus himself was tempted and brought into that place, and it has some very intriguing answers.

00:12:38.460 --> 00:12:41.580
At some point, buy me a cup of coffee and we will talk about it.

00:12:41.820 --> 00:12:49.100
We do know that you and I, when we are tempted, it's because we are drawn out by our own lust, and that's the place where we sin.

00:12:49.899 --> 00:13:03.740
But God in his grace and his mercy allows us, as we talked about last week, to languish in our fallenness because the real problem in our life isn't the things that we do, sin, or the things that we don't do, sin.

00:13:04.220 --> 00:13:11.740
It is the fact that we are trying to be our own God and we need to depend on Jesus more and more and more.

00:13:11.980 --> 00:13:21.419
And so God leverages sin to do that, to bring us to a place where we feel our brokenness and our agony and we grope our way back to Jesus.

00:13:21.500 --> 00:13:23.500
That's a great place to be, isn't it?

00:13:23.740 --> 00:13:34.779
The more I get to deal with me and my fallness, the more I'm forced to deal with God and find there the one thing that I know that I need more than anything else, which is dependence on Him.

00:13:35.100 --> 00:13:42.700
So after the testing or after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, here's the obvious statement of the morning.

00:13:42.940 --> 00:13:44.139
Jesus is what?

00:13:44.620 --> 00:13:46.060
Yeah, I would be too, right?

00:13:46.139 --> 00:13:48.060
He's there 40 days and 40 nights.

00:13:48.220 --> 00:13:53.340
The idea being is that he was in a physical weakened state.

00:13:54.060 --> 00:13:57.899
Just a parenthetical here for anybody who needs to know.

00:13:58.060 --> 00:14:08.620
It is whenever you are tired, whenever you are hungry, whenever it is late at night, and you ought not be up anyways, whenever the tempter comes the most diligently.

00:14:08.940 --> 00:14:12.779
Because your spiritual self is connected to your physical self.

00:14:12.940 --> 00:14:25.740
I wish it weren't so, but the truth is, as there is this line, as we again we talked about last week between who I am spiritually and who I am physically, and whenever I'm tired physically, I'm more likely to be cranky.

00:14:25.899 --> 00:14:28.539
Whenever I'm tired physically, I'm more likely to be lazy.

00:14:28.620 --> 00:14:28.860
Right?

00:14:28.940 --> 00:14:31.419
When we're tired, we're more likely to be susceptible.

00:14:31.580 --> 00:14:35.820
So Jesus, we find him here in his most vulnerable state.

00:14:36.220 --> 00:14:39.740
And the tempter comes to him and begins to tempt him.

00:14:40.060 --> 00:14:48.220
Now let's just pause for a second, and I want to connect us back to the Old Testament because that's what Jesus is about to do.

00:14:48.460 --> 00:14:52.300
Anytime you hear the number 40, you know that's a significant number.

00:14:52.379 --> 00:15:06.220
It has some biblical connection because 40 in the Old Testament, throughout the Old Testament, had something to do with trying or tempting or difficulty, or if you're a sinner, it's consequences for your for your sin.

00:15:06.379 --> 00:15:20.300
And so whenever we think of 40, we go back into the Old Testament, my mind is automatically drawn to the 40 years of wondering that the children of Israel experience because they refuse to go into the promised land and to trust God.

00:15:20.539 --> 00:15:23.980
And that's exactly what Jesus intends for us to see.

00:15:24.620 --> 00:15:29.740
Jesus is about to do battle with the great enemy, Satan.

00:15:30.139 --> 00:15:32.379
And as he does, you know what's going to happen.

00:15:32.460 --> 00:15:35.980
If you've heard this story before, you're you know what Jesus is going to do.

00:15:36.220 --> 00:15:39.899
Jesus is going to use the word to defend himself.

00:15:39.980 --> 00:15:44.220
He's going to pull out the sword, as Paul calls it in Ephesians chapter 6.

00:15:44.379 --> 00:15:51.019
He's going to pull out the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and he's going to use it to do battle with the enemy.

00:15:51.180 --> 00:15:56.060
Now, the truth is, um, Jesus is the word, John tells us.

00:15:56.139 --> 00:16:00.060
He is the logos, he's the very presentation of the word of God.

00:16:00.220 --> 00:16:03.740
And so he could have used any of the passages he wanted to use.

00:16:03.899 --> 00:16:06.779
In fact, Jesus could have spoken himself, new word.

00:16:06.940 --> 00:16:09.899
In fact, at the end of this, he does kind of do that.

00:16:09.980 --> 00:16:23.259
But Jesus could have referenced any Old Testament passage, passages that he wanted to, but he references three passages, and they all occur in the early chapters of the book of Deuteronomy.

00:16:23.500 --> 00:16:28.379
How many of y'all did your devotional studies this week in the book of Deuteronomy?

00:16:28.700 --> 00:16:31.180
Okay, it's some thick reading in there.

00:16:31.500 --> 00:16:38.779
And Jesus goes back to that story, to that passage, and he pulls out verses to do battle with the enemy.

00:16:38.940 --> 00:16:40.220
Why is he doing this?

00:16:40.700 --> 00:16:53.980
He's doing it because Deuteronomy was written at the end of the 40 years of wondering, just before the children of Israel went into the land.

00:16:55.019 --> 00:16:56.460
And it had three parts.

00:16:56.620 --> 00:17:07.180
It had a part that pointed back, the first four chapters point back at what had occurred prior to the 40 years of wondering and how God had delivered the people.

00:17:07.259 --> 00:17:18.859
And the last two chapters point forward into some date in the future when Israel was going to disobey God's law so much that they would be cast out of the land.

00:17:19.180 --> 00:17:23.019
And in the middle of that section, there's a very large sermon.

00:17:23.419 --> 00:17:32.939
And that sermon opens up with Moses telling the people what they needed to do if they were going to live fruitfully in the land.

00:17:33.659 --> 00:17:44.059
Do you think that's an accident that Jesus is going to that section of Scripture to defend against the temptation of the devil?

00:17:44.699 --> 00:17:46.139
No, not at all, right?

00:17:46.459 --> 00:17:54.379
No, in the same way, you and I have been brought out of a sphere of wondering, and we have been placed at the threshold of the promised land.

00:17:54.619 --> 00:18:02.059
In fact, in some ways, we now live in the promised land, in the kingdom of earth as it is right here, but not fully yet.

00:18:02.219 --> 00:18:17.740
We live there, and if we're going to live there fruitfully, we have to follow Jesus' example as he did in Deuteronomy chapter six and eight, where we defend against the temptation of the enemy.

00:18:17.979 --> 00:18:33.259
So all that to say, if I've lost you there, come back in right quick, because what all you need to know is that Jesus is bringing us back to the book of Deuteronomy and showing us how we live in the promises of God fruitfully and effectively.

00:18:33.500 --> 00:18:36.379
Because the truth is we've been saved, and that's great.

00:18:36.619 --> 00:18:39.500
Jesus has come into our heart and that we rejoice in that.

00:18:39.659 --> 00:18:43.419
But how many of you know that sin can still wreck your Monday morning?

00:18:43.659 --> 00:18:46.459
I mean, like I need to know how to deal with sin.

00:18:46.539 --> 00:18:48.299
I need to know how to deal with the temptations.

00:18:48.379 --> 00:18:54.779
I need to know how to deal with these urges to feel uh to uh to have and to be.

00:18:55.339 --> 00:18:56.539
And so how do we do that?

00:18:56.619 --> 00:18:57.979
So look at look at what happens here.

00:18:58.059 --> 00:18:59.579
Let's just walk through these together.

00:18:59.740 --> 00:19:17.500
So the tempter comes to Jesus and says, if you are the Son of God, of course it's a first class conditional sentence in the Greek, and so a better translation or understanding says, since you are the Son of God, like if this is really who you are, and it appears that you're that person, we command these stones to become loaves of bread.

00:19:17.740 --> 00:19:20.779
Again, appealing back to this period of time.

00:19:21.979 --> 00:19:23.259
Here's what's what's happening.

00:19:23.419 --> 00:19:24.779
Jesus is hungry.

00:19:25.099 --> 00:19:26.779
He has the right to eat.

00:19:27.019 --> 00:19:29.500
I mean, there's nothing wrong with eating bread.

00:19:29.659 --> 00:19:33.819
Now, if you eat as much bread as I have eaten, that might be one of those seven deadly sins.

00:19:33.979 --> 00:19:36.299
But overall, there's nothing wrong with eating bread.

00:19:36.379 --> 00:19:43.259
And yet Jesus knows for this period of time he's committed himself to being hungry, to denying self.

00:19:43.419 --> 00:19:46.379
We don't do very well with denying self these days, do we?

00:19:46.619 --> 00:19:50.619
We want to be gratified and we want to be gratified immediately.

00:19:50.779 --> 00:19:52.539
Like we we aren't waiting.

00:19:52.619 --> 00:19:55.179
I mean, we stand in front of the microwave and get antsy.

00:19:55.579 --> 00:20:01.099
This must have been really something Jesus, like an actual temptation, if he could be tempted.

00:20:01.179 --> 00:20:06.619
This is uh something that would have, I mean, it would have gotten me, because he could have done this.

00:20:06.939 --> 00:20:17.339
The one who took a couple of loaves of bread and fed 5,000 could pick up a couple of grains of sand off the dirt and turn it into a meal for himself, but yet he's got another plan.

00:20:17.579 --> 00:20:25.899
He turns to the enemy and says, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

00:20:26.059 --> 00:20:29.740
This is a reference to Deuteronomy chapter 8.

00:20:30.059 --> 00:20:39.659
And Deuteronomy chapter 8 is a statement by Moses reminding the people how their fathers had blown it.

00:20:39.979 --> 00:20:52.059
He says, concerning what their fathers had experienced at a place called Massah and Meribah, that he humbled them and let them hunger and fed you with manna.

00:20:52.299 --> 00:20:52.859
Why?

00:20:53.099 --> 00:20:56.059
Well, because he was trying to teach something.

00:20:56.219 --> 00:21:04.059
He was letting them go hungry and suffer because he wanted them to see something, to learn something.

00:21:05.019 --> 00:21:21.659
So Jesus uh uh Moses continues here, he says, Nor did your fathers know that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes out of the mouth of the Lord.

00:21:21.899 --> 00:21:31.579
This is a reference Moses is teaching here in Deuteronomy about an event that occurred in Exodus chapter 16.

00:21:32.059 --> 00:21:45.179
When the people of Israel were coming out of Egypt, they looked around and there there was no um there was no sheets uh there where you can go in and get your made-to-order meals.

00:21:45.259 --> 00:21:51.099
And you know, there was no fast food restaurants, and they're looking around, thinking to themselves, we didn't bring enough bread for this.

00:21:51.259 --> 00:21:54.699
And so they go and they complain against Moses.

00:21:55.099 --> 00:22:03.419
And they say to Moses, as they said repeatedly, Did you were there not enough graves in Egypt that you're gonna bring us out here to starve to death?

00:22:03.500 --> 00:22:05.979
You should have just left us in Egypt.

00:22:06.539 --> 00:22:15.819
And of course, that led to problems because they were not trusting the power of God to sustain them during their deepest times of need.

00:22:17.500 --> 00:22:18.699
Boy, I wish I could hear that.

00:22:20.139 --> 00:22:33.179
It's difficult whenever you're hungry and struggling and suffering or frustrated with things to wait on the Lord to know that I right now what I need to do is just wait because I know that the Father is teaching me something.

00:22:33.500 --> 00:22:35.419
That man does not live by bread alone.

00:22:35.500 --> 00:22:49.819
There is something more important than your daily bread, as important as that is, there's something more important, and that is the word of God that comes from the Spirit, from God's own heart that promises that He's going to provide everything that you need.

00:22:50.379 --> 00:22:54.059
All right, Matthew chapter 4, verses 5 and 6, second temptation.

00:22:54.219 --> 00:23:08.699
Then the devil took him into the holy city and set him up on the principal place, the pinnacle of the temple, uh, and said to him, That the pinnacle of the temple uh was the southwest corner of the temple.

00:23:08.779 --> 00:23:21.819
It was the highest point above Robinson's arch, would have been a beautiful view from up there, and it he would have been able to be seen by everyone from the city of David to the west side of the city, the Mount Moriah.

00:23:21.899 --> 00:23:23.500
You could see it all from right there.

00:23:23.740 --> 00:23:28.699
And during this period of time, Jerusalem was like the holy city.

00:23:28.779 --> 00:23:31.179
And so it would have been a full place.

00:23:31.339 --> 00:23:37.899
It would have been a place where Jesus could have stood up there and to do this thing the enemy was going to charge him to do.

00:23:37.979 --> 00:23:38.619
Look at what he says.

00:23:38.699 --> 00:23:54.059
He says, If you are the son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, and then he misquotes Psalm chapter 91, he will command his angels concerning you, and on his hands they will bear you up lest you strike your foot against the stone.

00:23:54.219 --> 00:24:03.740
That's a Psalm 91 promise that God is going to provide and protect for his people, but it doesn't mean that you get to do whatever you want to.

00:24:04.139 --> 00:24:10.859
Jesus promises us that he's going to provide and protect us, but that doesn't mean that we get to live and do anything that we want to.

00:24:11.019 --> 00:24:22.219
If you go out here and stand in the middle of Roanoke Street, Jesus' protection may include you, but he may let you suffer the consequences of standing out there in the middle of Roanoke Street.

00:24:22.539 --> 00:24:27.339
Because Jesus, that's what Jesus does, the lovingly allows us to experience the consequences.

00:24:27.500 --> 00:24:29.899
That's true in every aspect of life, by the way.

00:24:30.219 --> 00:24:35.019
Jesus promises to forgive us, and he will forgive us.

00:24:35.259 --> 00:24:45.339
But when we sin, when we commit one of those seven deadly sins, or one of those three categories of temptation we yield to, he will sometimes allow us to experience the consequences of that.

00:24:45.579 --> 00:24:48.219
Because he's not to be tempted, he's not to be tested.

00:24:48.459 --> 00:24:55.899
So what Jesus points back to here in Matthew chapter 4, verse 7, Jesus says to him, Again, it is written, he points back to the Word of God.

00:24:56.059 --> 00:25:00.379
He pulls out the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and he slices again the enemy.

00:25:00.539 --> 00:25:03.500
You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

00:25:03.740 --> 00:25:07.419
Now, this is a quote from Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 16.

00:25:07.500 --> 00:25:14.139
So just prior to Deuteronomy 8, where we were a minute ago, here's what the verse actually says in Deuteronomy.

00:25:14.379 --> 00:25:20.859
You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, just as Jesus just said, as you were tested at Mossess.

00:25:21.099 --> 00:25:30.459
Now, this is another area where the children of Israel had complained against the Lord, this time not about bread, but it was about water.

00:25:30.939 --> 00:25:32.139
They're thirsty in the desert.

00:25:32.299 --> 00:25:32.779
I get that.

00:25:32.939 --> 00:25:34.059
This is a valid need.

00:25:34.139 --> 00:25:40.139
I mean, this is something that, well, I mean, if you're in the desert, you're going to be looking for a fountain drink or something.

00:25:40.219 --> 00:25:41.419
And so they didn't have it.

00:25:41.500 --> 00:25:52.539
And so they come to Moses, and instead of going to God and praying and requesting, their prayer comes off as a complaint, and they go back to Moses and they say essentially the same thing.

00:25:55.579 --> 00:26:01.099
And of course, Moses becomes very frustrated and goes to the Lord and says, Hey, these people are about ready to kill me.

00:26:01.179 --> 00:26:03.740
You got to provide something for them.

00:26:03.819 --> 00:26:10.619
And God says, Take the rod that you have and go out to this rock and strike the rock, and it will produce water.

00:26:10.939 --> 00:26:18.539
So that's this reference back to Exodus chapter 17, again, where the people had complained.

00:26:18.699 --> 00:26:31.819
And literally at that point, in that same passage, what Moses says here and what he points out is that you are testing the Lord because you are not trusting him.

00:26:32.059 --> 00:26:34.859
You're saying he has brought you out here to die.

00:26:35.259 --> 00:26:39.259
Again, he is saying just trust, rely on the Lord.

00:26:39.339 --> 00:26:41.819
He's going to provide you what you need.

00:26:42.219 --> 00:26:48.219
Man, I've been there many times where my prayers don't come across as requests, they come across as complaints.

00:26:48.539 --> 00:26:50.059
Happens a lot, doesn't it?

00:26:50.379 --> 00:26:51.259
Not the only one.

00:26:51.419 --> 00:26:55.819
Here it would have been very easy for Jesus to follow the enemy's lead.

00:26:56.619 --> 00:26:59.179
He had a tough road ahead of him.

00:26:59.419 --> 00:27:00.939
This is the beginning of his ministry.

00:27:01.099 --> 00:27:20.299
He's got three years of forming a team, listening to them argue, and to do just the dumbest things and to be maligned and spit upon and made fun of and rejected and beaten and crucified.

00:27:20.379 --> 00:27:21.500
He's got three years for that.

00:27:21.579 --> 00:27:40.539
And the enemy is coming to him and saying, if you were to stand up here, check this out, Jesus, if you were to stand up here at the top of this pinnacle where thousands of people can see you, and you jump off and they see you start flying around like Superman, everybody's going to be posting about you.

00:27:40.779 --> 00:27:46.139
You're going to be so famous that you're not going to have to go through any of that other stuff.

00:27:46.379 --> 00:27:49.099
This is going to be a quick workaround for God's plan.

00:27:49.339 --> 00:28:02.379
But Jesus recognizes that God's plan, even though it may be more difficult at the end, it is better because it brings glory to God the way that God intended.

00:28:02.779 --> 00:28:05.899
All right, look back at Matthew chapter 4, verse 8.

00:28:06.059 --> 00:28:07.259
This is the final temptation.

00:28:07.339 --> 00:28:14.139
So the temptation to turn stone into bread, connecting to Deuteronomy chapter 8.

00:28:14.299 --> 00:28:19.819
The temptation to jump off the temple, connecting to Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 16.

00:28:20.139 --> 00:28:21.819
Look at what the enemy does here at the very end.

00:28:21.899 --> 00:28:24.139
This is a straight frontal attack.

00:28:24.699 --> 00:28:33.740
Now the enemy's going directly for what he's after because the truth is what the enemy is ultimately after is your heart.

00:28:34.459 --> 00:28:36.779
He's not trying to get you to just look at porn.

00:28:36.939 --> 00:28:40.299
He's not trying to get you to just covet your neighbors, whatever.

00:28:40.539 --> 00:28:44.139
He's not just trying to get you to steal something that doesn't belong to you.

00:28:44.219 --> 00:28:47.500
He's not just trying to get you to be rage, angry, to be hateful.

00:28:47.579 --> 00:28:50.859
Like all of that is a gateway to what he really wants.

00:28:50.939 --> 00:28:57.019
And what he really wants is for you to be his servant and he to be your God.

00:28:57.419 --> 00:28:58.379
That's what he wants.

00:28:58.539 --> 00:29:03.579
That was the objective whenever he was trying to get you get us to get Eve to be to be her own God.

00:29:03.740 --> 00:29:11.819
Ultimately, he knew she could not bear the weight of that, which means she has to turn somewhere else, and he would be there making the promises that he could not fulfill.

00:29:11.979 --> 00:29:13.099
He wants to be the one.

00:29:13.259 --> 00:29:15.339
He wants to be the object of worship.

00:29:15.419 --> 00:29:20.459
And so he comes to Jesus and says, he takes him to a high place, up to a high mountain.

00:29:20.779 --> 00:29:23.740
We know this, by the way, is not a terrestrial mountain.

00:29:23.819 --> 00:29:25.179
This is not a physical place.

00:29:25.259 --> 00:29:34.299
This is a celestial mountain, somewhere, a reference to some otherworldly space where he's able to see the kingdoms of this world.

00:29:34.459 --> 00:29:39.899
And the end of verse number eight tells us, and their glory, all of their splendor.

00:29:40.059 --> 00:29:42.459
Jesus, take a look at all of this.

00:29:43.500 --> 00:29:49.659
And then he says to him, All of these I will give you.

00:29:49.899 --> 00:29:53.659
Now let me just pause and ask, are the kingdoms his?

00:29:54.619 --> 00:29:57.579
I mean, in a very real sense, they are not his.

00:29:58.139 --> 00:29:59.259
They belong to the Lord.

00:29:59.339 --> 00:30:06.379
It's the Lord who points, who puts rulers into place and he moves kingdoms around and kings around.

00:30:06.539 --> 00:30:08.139
He's the one who's in control.

00:30:08.299 --> 00:30:21.500
The kingdoms are his, but what the enemy is essentially saying here is most theologians will tell you, he's recognizing for this moment that he's a usurper, that he's the one who's trying to lay claim on something that belongs to God.

00:30:21.740 --> 00:30:33.500
And he's saying to Jesus at this point, if you will just let me feel what it's like to be God just for a moment, if you will fall down and worship me, I will give you all of these kingdoms.

00:30:33.740 --> 00:30:35.099
What's he saying here?

00:30:35.259 --> 00:30:41.500
It's been well attested throughout church history that what essentially the enemy is saying here is look, you're not going to want to go through the cross.

00:30:41.579 --> 00:30:43.339
You know you're not going to want to go through the cross.

00:30:43.419 --> 00:30:45.659
It's not going to be great to bear the sins of the world.

00:30:45.979 --> 00:30:47.259
I'll just fine.

00:30:47.419 --> 00:30:48.059
You know what?

00:30:48.219 --> 00:30:49.899
Let's let's let's come to an armistice.

00:30:49.979 --> 00:30:51.019
Let's have an agreement here.

00:30:51.259 --> 00:30:54.379
I will let go of everything that I've laid hands on.

00:30:54.539 --> 00:30:59.740
I will leave it, and you can have it back without the cross.

00:31:02.459 --> 00:31:04.859
You can imagine what kind of temptation that would have been.

00:31:04.939 --> 00:31:14.139
But of course, achieving something that looks like God's plan in a way that isn't God's plan is just another form of sin.

00:31:16.619 --> 00:31:23.819
If Jesus had taken the enemy up on this, yeah, he might have been ruler of the world if such a thing were possible.

00:31:24.059 --> 00:31:34.779
He might have been ruler of the world in the messianic type way that the Jews were expecting him to be, but you and I would still be lost in our sin.

00:31:35.579 --> 00:31:36.939
This is far more important.

00:31:37.099 --> 00:31:39.819
Jesus knows this and he knows what the enemy's after.

00:31:39.979 --> 00:31:40.779
Now watch this.

00:31:41.019 --> 00:31:45.019
For the very first time in this conversation, Jesus doesn't quote from Scripture.

00:31:45.339 --> 00:31:46.139
What does he say?

00:31:46.299 --> 00:31:47.740
Look at verse number 10.

00:31:48.059 --> 00:31:49.259
What does he say there?

00:31:50.539 --> 00:31:51.500
Begone.

00:31:52.299 --> 00:31:52.939
Get out.

00:31:53.339 --> 00:31:54.699
Begone, Satan.

00:31:54.939 --> 00:31:56.939
And then he's quote quotes scripture.

00:31:57.019 --> 00:31:59.339
Now that's going to become very important here in just a second.

00:31:59.500 --> 00:32:04.459
He says, You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.

00:32:04.619 --> 00:32:16.299
This is a reference back to again to Deuteronomy chapter 6, which is the Shema Israel, where Jesus, where the Father has told Israel, I don't want you worshiping any other gods but me.

00:32:16.539 --> 00:32:18.779
I know you were tempted by those gods in Egypt.

00:32:18.939 --> 00:32:21.979
You're going to be tempted by these gods that you're about to see in Cana.

00:32:22.299 --> 00:32:23.740
None of them are for you for you.

00:32:23.819 --> 00:32:24.539
I'm it.

00:32:25.659 --> 00:32:28.779
You and I have this monogamous relationship.

00:32:28.859 --> 00:32:31.500
You're going to worship me and worship me alone.

00:32:31.579 --> 00:32:37.899
And here's how Deuteronomy chapter 6, 13 says, It is the Lord your God, you shall fear.

00:32:38.139 --> 00:32:43.659
Him shall you serve, and by his name you shall swear.

00:32:43.899 --> 00:32:46.139
He alone is it.

00:32:47.339 --> 00:32:52.539
Jesus takes him back to Scripture and says, This is what the Word of God says.

00:32:52.619 --> 00:33:04.539
And again, he pulls out the sword, the word, right, the word of God, the sword of the Spirit, and he slices and says, This is really all about what who you're going to worship.

00:33:04.619 --> 00:33:10.859
And the word of God tells us we are to worship God and give no place to any other God.

00:33:11.019 --> 00:33:13.419
And that really is the essence of all sin.

00:33:13.979 --> 00:33:16.699
It's just what's going to master you.

00:33:17.259 --> 00:33:21.979
Because you know you've dealt with sin enough to know that you can't just have one.

00:33:22.139 --> 00:33:36.299
That the moment you you take one, the moment you do it once, the moment you experience it once, it calls back to you, it pulls you back in, it drafts you, the ground opens up beneath your feet and drops you into deeper levels of sin.

00:33:36.459 --> 00:33:37.259
Why is that?

00:33:37.500 --> 00:33:39.659
It's because sin masters you.

00:33:39.819 --> 00:33:41.179
This is what Jesus tells us.

00:33:41.419 --> 00:33:42.699
Sin masters you.

00:33:42.859 --> 00:34:04.139
And those things that give you orders, those things that rule over you, those things that you're subject to, those things that you turn to in your times of need, those things that you turn to whenever you're bored, those things that you're turned to whenever you're uncertain, and you can't stop doing it, to the one that serves those things, that's his master, is what Jesus says.

00:34:04.379 --> 00:34:06.459
This is our, this is our master.

00:34:06.699 --> 00:34:24.940
And it's a competing, it's a competing dominance, it's a competing, competing ruler in our life when we have something that demands of us our time, that demands of us our allegiance allegiance, that demands of us our affirmation and our hope to be placed in it.

00:34:25.340 --> 00:34:31.019
And Jesus says, that's that's that's there's only one place that that can go to, and that has to go to God.

00:34:31.180 --> 00:34:44.700
And so Jesus quotes Scripture, and then but before he does that, he he he speaks the phrase, be gone, which isn't like you go back to Deuteronomy chapter six, and that's not in there.

00:34:44.940 --> 00:34:48.539
But Jesus says it, and look at verse number 11, what happens?

00:34:48.780 --> 00:34:50.460
Then the devil does what?

00:34:51.740 --> 00:34:53.099
Why did he leave him?

00:34:54.140 --> 00:34:57.019
Because Jesus said, You're done here.

00:34:57.820 --> 00:34:58.700
Be gone.

00:34:59.099 --> 00:35:14.780
And the devil left him, and behold, angels come and were ministering to him, and immediately he was surrounded by this ensemble of heaven's bodyguards and servants ministering to him.

00:35:15.740 --> 00:35:19.980
Now, what is happening here?

00:35:22.380 --> 00:35:24.300
What is actually going on?

00:35:25.019 --> 00:35:32.780
What's actually going on here is Jesus has just done battle with the enemy using nothing but the word of God.

00:35:33.579 --> 00:35:49.340
Now, if we were to go to Jesus, like if this were to happen today, if if Jesus were to read read uh the article in The Atlantic, I think his response would be would be pretty clear based on what we see here in another passage of Scripture.

00:35:49.420 --> 00:35:55.660
I think Jesus would say that the eighth deadly sin has a first-century cure, a first-century solution.

00:35:55.900 --> 00:36:08.940
The eighth deadly sin, if what our technology does for us and how we interact with our technology, if it is indeed a new form of sin, then it still has the same old solution.

00:36:09.260 --> 00:36:20.539
I personally think that the reality is that the way we interact with our technology, the way that we depend on it, simply makes sinning more efficient.

00:36:21.099 --> 00:36:37.500
I can sin faster, better, more quickly because I've got in my pocket a gateway to all of the seven deadly sins, all of the three forms of what John said comprise all of temptations.

00:36:37.579 --> 00:36:38.700
It's right there.

00:36:38.780 --> 00:36:46.380
And yet, even though the technology may be brand new, the truth is the solution is well, it's as old as time itself.

00:36:46.940 --> 00:36:49.740
Now the solution is not what you think it may be.

00:36:50.220 --> 00:36:54.860
Um, James Parker suggested the solution in his article.

00:36:55.099 --> 00:36:57.500
Of course, you know, I'm not sure what his faith is.

00:36:57.579 --> 00:37:03.660
I think I know, but I know, I know he doesn't get the answer right in the article.

00:37:03.820 --> 00:37:06.620
He's discussing how are we going to manage technology?

00:37:06.780 --> 00:37:10.940
What are we going to do about this new form of temptation?

00:37:11.260 --> 00:37:21.660
And near the end of the article, he says, once we know what we're dealing with, um you can summon its opposite.

00:37:22.860 --> 00:37:25.980
That seems to be the way we address sin, isn't it?

00:37:26.220 --> 00:37:33.260
That the solution to dealing with the darkness in our heart is to do the opposite thing.

00:37:33.740 --> 00:37:36.780
So I cuss, I need to stop cussing.

00:37:36.940 --> 00:37:39.820
Um I'm angry, I need to be more happy.

00:37:39.980 --> 00:37:45.260
Um, you know, I'm I'm envious, and so I just need to need to be satisfied with things that I have.

00:37:45.420 --> 00:37:46.460
You fill in the blank.

00:37:46.620 --> 00:37:51.420
And all of those are decent approaches as far as they go, but they are not solutions.

00:37:51.579 --> 00:38:00.059
He suggested, he says, if pride, then gentle uh if pride is getting the better of you, then engage in humility.

00:38:00.140 --> 00:38:05.099
If gluttony, then moderation, if envy, then compassion, and so on and so on.

00:38:05.340 --> 00:38:07.740
How many of you know that that doesn't work out very well?

00:38:08.059 --> 00:38:09.820
It's a great coping mechanism.

00:38:09.980 --> 00:38:15.579
I'm not suggesting that you we give in to every temptation that's out there just because no need in doing the opposite.

00:38:15.660 --> 00:38:17.740
It's not going to help us in the end.

00:38:17.900 --> 00:38:19.340
That's not true at all.

00:38:19.579 --> 00:38:21.980
God would not have us live that kind of life.

00:38:22.059 --> 00:38:25.019
But the reality is it may be a coping mechanism.

00:38:25.180 --> 00:38:31.180
It may be something that is that demonstrates self-discipline and obedience, but it's not the cure.

00:38:31.820 --> 00:38:35.019
Jesus did not have to rely on himself.

00:38:35.420 --> 00:38:36.780
He could have, though, right?

00:38:36.860 --> 00:38:42.220
I mean, Jesus could have relied only on himself in his own effort during his temptations.

00:38:42.300 --> 00:38:46.059
He could have spoken his own words, but he didn't speak his own words.

00:38:46.220 --> 00:38:47.660
What words did he speak?

00:38:47.980 --> 00:38:50.300
He spoke the words of Scripture.

00:38:50.539 --> 00:39:03.740
Can I suggest to you that perhaps an appropriate way for us to address the sin, the temptations in our life, including this, the eighth deadliest sin, is to meditate and live in God's word?

00:39:04.620 --> 00:39:11.820
That listen, and I'm I know I'm a preacher and this is what I'm supposed to say, but the reality is there is power in the word of God.

00:39:11.980 --> 00:39:20.860
It is still sharper than any two-edged sword and can divide us in ways that we could never have imagined, but we so desperately need.

00:39:21.340 --> 00:39:23.420
The word of God is powerful.

00:39:23.740 --> 00:39:31.500
Man, if you're not meditating in God's word, like if this isn't part of your diet, and I'm not saying you need to sit down and read three chapters of scripture per day.

00:39:31.579 --> 00:39:33.180
If that's you, hey, that's great.

00:39:33.340 --> 00:39:34.220
You do that thing.

00:39:34.380 --> 00:39:45.579
But I'm saying to you, whatever the Spirit empowers you to do, you take all the discipline that you have and you get into God's word, start with one verse.

00:39:45.820 --> 00:39:57.980
You'd be surprised how that whenever you open up one verse and you read and you meditate on it, how that suddenly you will find that verse applies to whatever you're facing on Thursday morning.

00:39:58.300 --> 00:40:05.260
Jesus used the word of God to confront temptation in his, in his, that was that was in front of him.

00:40:05.500 --> 00:40:10.059
And if he it like if he did it, if it was good enough for Jesus, can I get a witness?

00:40:10.300 --> 00:40:11.660
It's good enough for me.

00:40:11.980 --> 00:40:13.260
Good enough for me.

00:40:13.900 --> 00:40:21.900
See, the eighth century or the eighth deadly sin has a first century solution, and that's reliance on the word of God.

00:40:21.980 --> 00:40:25.900
But there's a connection to that.

00:40:26.059 --> 00:40:33.340
There's a second um tactic that we should pursue when attempting to address sin in our life.

00:40:33.500 --> 00:40:35.740
And Parker kind of grazes up against it.

00:40:35.820 --> 00:40:38.700
Let me give you the last sentence in his article.

00:40:38.860 --> 00:40:49.500
He says, to free ourselves from this one, because he's recognizing how pervasive technology is in our life and how that it's like it's almost impossible to get away from it.

00:40:49.660 --> 00:40:51.500
Like it is very difficult, right?

00:40:51.740 --> 00:41:04.780
I was thinking the other day, I remember some of you like you've you've you've seen these in television, but like I have actually handled a quarter, put it into a machine and dialed a number on a little silver machine.

00:41:05.099 --> 00:41:06.059
Remember that?

00:41:06.620 --> 00:41:10.620
I remember going on vacation and nobody could get you.

00:41:10.860 --> 00:41:19.500
If you wanted to know what was going on back home, you had to pick up the phone and call the number that you knew to call back in and nobody, nobody could reach you.

00:41:19.740 --> 00:41:20.539
Bless the Lord.

00:41:20.620 --> 00:41:22.140
Those were some good days, right?

00:41:22.940 --> 00:41:32.220
The technology, you know, it has its benefits, but it also is reckless in the way that in the in the way that we apply it here.

00:41:32.460 --> 00:41:39.660
And so the new technology allows right it allows us to do some incredible things, but it it's also so pervasive.

00:41:39.740 --> 00:41:42.059
And the truth is, is like it's difficult to get away from.

00:41:42.140 --> 00:41:45.340
And so he recognizes this that what are we going to do about this?

00:41:45.500 --> 00:41:47.500
I can't just stop looking at my computer.

00:41:47.740 --> 00:41:55.260
It's kind of funny, like he's he can't do the opposite, which is the thing he just suggested to do, just stop doing one thing and start doing the opposite.

00:41:55.340 --> 00:41:58.140
He's just recognizing we can't do that.

00:41:58.380 --> 00:42:00.059
So, what's the solution?

00:42:01.180 --> 00:42:16.539
To free ourselves from this one, to even have the beginning of a program of to free ourselves, I think we're going to have to do the truly and terrifyingly medieval thing.

00:42:16.780 --> 00:42:20.860
We are going to have to get on our knees and to pray.

00:42:22.220 --> 00:42:26.780
We do not stand against the enemy alone.

00:42:27.660 --> 00:42:35.900
There is a God who is much more concerned about your holiness and your righteousness and your flourishing than you could ever be.

00:42:36.140 --> 00:42:44.700
There is a God who is much more concerned about the survival and the health and the flourishing of your kids and your grandkids than you will ever be.

00:42:44.860 --> 00:42:53.900
Yeah, we use the word just as Jesus did, but at the end of the day, nobody can wield the sword of the Spirit the way that Jesus does.

00:42:54.059 --> 00:43:10.860
And so we can turn to Him in our time of need and pray and seek His strength because as we've talked about before, what God is really after isn't you and I overcoming our own weaknesses by our own power.

00:43:11.099 --> 00:43:14.940
If that were the case, then Paul never would have needed to become a Christian.

00:43:15.019 --> 00:43:16.220
He could have stayed a Pharisee.

00:43:16.380 --> 00:43:20.780
Know what Jesus really wants for us is our greater dependence on him.

00:43:20.940 --> 00:43:29.260
And I can think of no greater dependence on him in our time of need than using his word and then turning and praying for his power.

00:43:29.740 --> 00:43:31.660
Why don't we just do that right now?
