particular paragraph that caused him to break up and he started to cry. 00:04:21.339 --> 00:04:31.019 And the the phrase was this his father said, I'm proud of you because of who you are, not because because Sebastian wasn't the first son to hear a word from his father, a word of affirmation. 00:05:37.819 --> 00:05:41.500 And we're going to see how Jesus hears that same word. 00:05:41.660 --> 00:05:47.340 Of course, Jesus, well, he has a whole different skill set than Sebastian did. 00:05:47.420 --> 00:06:01.740 And yet, whenever the father looked at him, the love of the father was based not on what Jesus had done, although he had already done a lot and was going to do much more, but it was based on who he was to the Father. 00:06:01.980 --> 00:06:03.580 So let's just look at this text together. 00:06:03.740 --> 00:06:04.379 Here's what we're going to do. 00:06:04.540 --> 00:06:11.340 We're going to walk through this text very briefly, and then we're going to talk quickly about two applications for us as fathers. 00:06:11.420 --> 00:06:19.340 And if you're here this morning and you're not a father, this still applies to you because we are all coaching, we are all parenting, down to verse number 11. 00:06:35.900 --> 00:06:37.420 Now, this is John the Baptist. 00:06:37.580 --> 00:06:38.699 He's in the wilderness. 00:06:38.780 --> 00:06:44.460 He has started his ministry by a proclamation that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:06:44.699 --> 00:06:47.180 This is how preaching always started in the New Testament. 00:06:47.340 --> 00:06:54.460 Whenever John started his ministry, his proclamation ministry, the message was the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of God is at hand. 00:06:54.620 --> 00:06:56.939 When Jesus started his ministry, same message. 00:06:57.020 --> 00:06:58.699 The kingdom of God is at hand. 00:07:06.620 --> 00:07:17.980 Now, of course, the kingdom of God being at hand comes with a great deal of celebration for those of us who are in the kingdom, who are in Christ, but it comes with a great deal of warning for those who are not. 00:07:18.220 --> 00:07:22.460 And John warns the people, especially one particular group. 00:07:22.620 --> 00:07:32.460 There were a group of religious leaders who had come down to the Jordan River where John was baptizing at way out in the wilderness, out in the sticks. 00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:36.939 And whenever they showed up, John had some words for them. 00:07:37.180 --> 00:07:38.379 They were heavy words. 00:07:38.460 --> 00:07:40.780 Sometimes heavy words are necessary words. 00:07:40.860 --> 00:08:08.139 He says to the crowd, he says, I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than me, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. 00:08:08.460 --> 00:08:12.860 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:22.780 Now, John the Baptist had already spoke to these religious leaders in particular and had said to them, Who is it that has warned you to escape from the fires of judgment? 00:08:23.020 --> 00:08:31.900 I mean, the heavy hand of that was simply, hey, you're about to be judged for your unrighteousness, masked as righteousness. 00:08:32.059 --> 00:08:45.659 And then he turned to them and he says, This concerning what this Messiah figure was going to do, the one who was coming after him, whose sandals he was not worthy to pick up and carry and untie. 00:08:46.059 --> 00:08:48.139 What was that individual going to do? 00:08:48.299 --> 00:08:50.220 Look at what John the Baptist says here. 00:08:50.460 --> 00:08:54.300 He says, his winnowing fork, and that's not a good thing, right? 00:08:54.460 --> 00:08:58.379 The one that he stabs into the earth and flings up in the air. 00:08:58.620 --> 00:09:03.580 That's never fun, is it, to get stabbed and flung up in the air for God to winnow us? 00:09:03.740 --> 00:09:18.460 It's not easy, but his winnowing fork is in his hand and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 00:09:19.419 --> 00:09:22.620 Gary, I've heard a sermon or two like this sure exactly what's going through John's heart. 00:09:46.620 --> 00:10:00.700 Someday I want to ask him what the rest of that sermon sounds like, but I do know there's a big, there's a significant contrast between what John says here about the Messiah and what he experiences. 00:10:01.659 --> 00:10:25.740 I mean, see, if you've heard these two verses and you didn't know anything about Jesus, you might expect whenever he shows up, he's going to have like this red face, this scalinous face, he's gonna be he's gonna be angry, and he's gonna be hot, and he's gonna be sharp, and he's gonna be direct, and he's not gonna joke about anything, and he's nothing if we're not careful, we can imagine a Jesus that's nothing like the one presented in the New Testament. 00:10:26.539 --> 00:10:36.300 Because the one who shows up here before uh before John is radically different from the message he has just spoken. 00:10:36.700 --> 00:10:37.580 He's there, right? 00:10:37.740 --> 00:10:41.180 Jesus mastering the art of chairbuilding or something, working as a carpenter, and he's up there in obscurity, and he's coming down to John to be baptized, and he's about to become very well known. 00:11:53.899 --> 00:12:03.259 How many of you know that dwelling in obscurity, serving in obscurity is often required before doing anything great? 00:12:03.580 --> 00:12:05.340 It takes a while to work. 00:12:05.659 --> 00:12:09.259 It takes a while to be ready. 00:12:09.580 --> 00:12:20.539 This is what Jesus has done here in his ministry, not that the Son of God needs to be ready for anything, but yet he has been in obscurity and he shows up here before his very well-known cousin to be baptized from him. 00:12:20.700 --> 00:12:22.620 And John's response is understandable. been preaching, who has the winnowing fork in his hand, whose sandals he's not worthy to bear in any fashion, now has come to him and says, Hey, listen, I need to be baptized. 00:13:12.940 --> here, that Jesus is, he's identifying with sinners, which is why he came. 00:15:49.659 --> 00:15:59.500 He's not some God somewhere out there, like the gods who are worshiped throughout this world and throughout history, that give you a checklist. 00:15:59.580 --> 00:16:09.259 And if you fulfill that checklist just well enough and you die just the right moment, whenever you don't have sin in your mean, are you gonna be the heavy-handed kind of father who's like the drill sergeant who's gonna make sure that your kid is disciplined enough to go out and to conquer the world, or are you gonna be the friend who's like always there for your kid and you know, ready to hear and to listen and to, you know, to walk with them, and the kind of person who's like, hey, they can come and share anything book of Matthew. 00:28:46.619 --> 00:28:47.579 It's what they did. 00:28:47.740 --> 00:28:53.979 And so uh whenever whenever the Father speaks, he begins with the very first Psalm. 00:28:54.139 --> and 2 were the same psalm. 00:29:03.819 --> 00:29:15.819 It was all this messianic king is coming psalm, and in the middle of it, the psalmist writes, As for me, I have set my king in Zion. where the Father says, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 00:29:55.339 --> 00:30:04.619 Isaiah chapter 42, verse 1 is the beginning of the servant, of the servant Messiah prophecies. 00:30:04.779 --> 00:30:12.139 And so it's a critical shift in the book of Isaiah, where Isaiah is now talking about the work and the Messiah and what he's going to do. 00:30:12.299 --> 00:30:24.379 And in the very opening verses, this is what it said: Behold, my servant who I uphold, my chosen in whom my soul delights. 00:30:25.339 --> 00:30:32.539 The second phrase in this proclamation from heaven is that very phrase. 00:30:32.699 --> 00:30:35.579 This is my beloved son in whom I delight. 00:30:35.740 --> 00:30:39.819 It's translated differently because it's Hebrew and not Greek, but out of words. 00:31:19.579 --> 00:31:29.579 Well, the passage doesn't open with when the passage, this section opens, when Jesus comes out of the water, water, do you recall what happens? 00:31:30.299 --> 00:31:37.099 An angel or the spirit descends as a dove and lands on him. 00:31:37.579 --> 00:31:46.379 Well, if you were a Hebrew and you knew your, you know, your your Tanakh, your your Torah, Nephilim and Kephalim, your Tanakh, you knew your law. 00:31:46.619 --> 00:31:54.299 Well, this would remind you of some very important passages out of the law, out of the book of Genesis, Genesis 1 and 2, for example. 00:31:54.459 --> 00:31:56.939 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:31:57.019 --> 00:31:59.419 Here it is at the very beginning of the Bible. 00:31:59.579 --> 00:32:01.339 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:32:01.419 --> 00:32:03.899 The earth was without form and void. 00:32:04.539 --> 00:32:08.699 Um, darkness was upon the face of the earth, and the what does that say? 00:32:09.339 --> 00:32:13.979 The spirit was hovering over the face of the deep. 00:32:14.059 --> 00:32:18.939 It wasn't landing anywhere, it was just hovering, it hadn't made quite made contact with the earth. 00:32:19.099 --> 00:32:23.500 It was just, he was just hovering over the face of the earth. 00:32:23.579 --> 00:32:33.259 And then later in the story of Noah, whenever Noah sends out the birds, he sends out that last what is it? 00:32:34.059 --> 00:32:34.779 I forget. 00:32:36.139 --> 00:32:42.299 He sends it out, and the dove does not return to find a nest. 00:32:44.139 --> 00:32:50.779 I think what's happening here is this is an allusion to the beginning of scripture, the law. 00:32:51.419 --> 00:32:55.740 And so out of this, what is 00:33:14.539 --> 00:33:22.379 It makes perfect sense given what's happening here because the next thing, the next thing the Father does is he has just illustrated the law. 00:33:22.699 --> different, even like if you don't buy that, and I think you should because it's so cool. 00:33:37.579 --> 00:33:43.500 The truth is, the truth is, what you see there is the Father speaking his word live up to the teachings of Deuteronomy chapter 6 that as we go out and as we come in, as we walk by and past, and in the morning and the evenings, we teach our children the Lord's ways. 00:34:36.780
