Last weekend, Caitlin and I went on a couples trip with a few of our really good friends out to Aspen. And we decided to go for what we remembered as a really solid hike. And it turned out to be a little bit more ambitious than either of us remembered. And let's just say that there were a few moments where some of us may have been questioning our route selection. But we did make it after about 3,000 feet of vertical climbing. Beautiful views, it was gorgeous outside. And so it was overall is a really good time. And standing at the top, when we were looking out across the mountains, I found myself thinking about perspective. And it reminded me that perspective tends to change everything. The view depends on where you're standing. Then on the drive home, I watched a YouTube video that's now been viewed well over a million and a half times. The premise was simple: the economy is becoming winner take all. Only the top 1% are the ones who are going to thrive, and everyone else should be worried and is going to be left out. And while I understand why the conversation occurs and why conversations like that capture people's attention, I think they're inviting us to look through the wrong lens. Because this isn't really an economic conversation, it's a perspective conversation. One of the things that I've learned over the years is this depending on the lens you look through, the world can feel really scary. Or it can also seem really awesome. If I begin with the assumption that everything is falling apart, well then guess what happens? I'm going to find that evidence. The internet has an endless supply of it. Economic collapse, political division, artificial intelligence, wars, markets, layoffs. There's no shortage of reasons to become afraid if fear is what you're looking for. But there's also no shortage of stories about people building businesses, creating opportunities, learning new skills, and serving others in extraordinary ways, thriving in every income bracket imaginable. Both stories exist. The question is, which one are you training yourself to see? This is where science becomes really important. When we're living in fear and anxiety, disappointment, overwhelm, our cognitive capacity actually declines. We become less creative, less resourceful, less capable of solving the very problems that we're worrying about. And then something else tends to happen. We start looking for more evidence to justify the way we already feel. That's how people get trapped. Not because the world becomes hopeless, but because they accidentally trained themselves to see only hopelessness. After working with more than 90,000 people over the past 22 years, I've noticed something. The people who consistently create extraordinary lives aren't ignoring reality. Instead, they're incredibly selective about where they place their attention. They spend time getting clear. What kind of relationship is it that I want? What kind of person do I want to become? And how do I want to feel emotionally? What contribution do I want to make? And what level of health do I want to create? What kind of financial life am I wanting to build? What career or business am I creating? They define a clear vision. And once they have it, they begin organizing their attention around those answers. One of the biggest differences that I see, they aren't glued to the news. That doesn't mean that they're uninformed. They're not burying their heads in the sand. It means they're intentional. They understand what's happening in the world, and then they get back to building. Most of the highly successful people that I know spend a small amount of time staying informed. Then almost all of their attention goes toward developing the skills they need, creating the value, and serving other people. They're building something meaningful, and that's where their focus is because that's where their influence actually lives. That's where their power lies. We recently wrapped up our fully sold-out power of vision intensive. A little bit more than 300 people spent the weekend doing something that almost nobody does. They created a vision for their life, not reacting to the future, but intentionally designing it. It's always one of my favorite weekends of the year because you can literally watch people's attention shift. They stop asking, what if everything gets worse? And they start asking, what am I here to build? And how can I do it? That single shift can change everything because economies change, politics are going to change, technology changes, markets change, weather changes, world events are going to change. Those cycles are always going to exist. But one thing remains remarkably consistent, which is your ability to create value. The foundation of the life you want is established in value creation. The more skill you develop, the more value you're capable of creating and providing to others. The more opportunities are going to naturally begin opening to you. That's true whether your goal is a fulfilling career, a successful business, or financial freedom. Or, yes, even joining the 1% someday. That isn't determined by panic. It's determined by competency built consistently over time. So instead of asking, what if the future gets worse? Try asking, who do I need to become to create the future that I want that I aspire to? That's an entirely different conversation. One question is going to pull you deeper into fear, the other pulls you toward possibility. And possibility is where your power lives. Maybe that's the lesson from our hike in Aspen. The trail didn't suddenly become easier. But once we stopped focusing on how much further we had to go and started appreciating how far we'd already come, the entire experience changed. The mountain never changed. Our perspective did. And sometimes that's all it takes. More since
