00:00:01.439 --> 00:00:05.440
It'll be no surprise to you that we're reading in Peter again.

00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:09.039
We've been studying that for the last few Sunday mornings.

00:00:09.279 --> 00:00:14.560
And today it's 1 Peter 2 verses 18 to 25.

00:00:14.720 --> 00:00:22.559
And I guess you'll be able to follow it on the screen or on your smart screen, or Bibles can be provided if you put your hand up.

00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:25.600
So let's do the reading then.

00:00:30.239 --> 00:00:41.439
Slave, submit yourself to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

00:00:42.159 --> 00:00:49.439
For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.

00:00:50.320 --> 00:00:56.640
But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it?

00:00:57.600 --> 00:01:05.280
But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

00:01:06.799 --> 00:01:15.680
To this you were called because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his steps.

00:01:16.959 --> 00:01:21.840
He committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth.

00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:28.480
When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate when he suffered.

00:01:28.959 --> 00:01:30.719
He made no threats.

00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:37.040
Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.

00:01:38.159 --> 00:01:47.120
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.

00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:50.879
By his wounds you have been healed.

00:01:51.760 --> 00:02:02.000
For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.

00:02:17.840 --> 00:02:25.360
Have you ever questioned an instruction or directive from someone in authority?

00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:32.960
Have you gone as far as to disobey what they asked you to do?

00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:36.800
If you have, you're in good company.

00:02:37.039 --> 00:02:47.759
The Bible records a number of God servants who chose to make a stand against demands that they considered unacceptable.

00:02:48.240 --> 00:02:54.319
Even when doing so, it was at the risk of endangering their own life.

00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:11.759
The writer to the Hebrews describes the faith of Moses' parents, who, undaunted by the king's command, which was for all male children to be destroyed at birth, hid their child for three months.

00:03:12.800 --> 00:03:27.120
There's also Esther, who agreed to Mordecai's request to plead the cause of the condemned Jews, although challenging the king's edict meant risking her own life.

00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:45.520
Then there's the account of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who refused Nebuchadnezzar's injunction to worship the gold image that he had set up, and were told that if they didn't do that, they were going to be toast.

00:03:46.240 --> 00:04:01.840
And not long afterwards, Daniel was unwilling to compromise his faith, and he too defied the king's dictat, which led to him becoming the main attraction in more ways than one.

00:04:03.199 --> 00:04:18.160
Moving to the New Testament, we read about the wise men who disobeyed Herod when they refused his summons to return to him once they had presented their gifts to the baby Jesus.

00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:37.680
And crucially, bearing in mind our reading this morning, when Peter in Acts 5 stood before the council and high priest, charged with preaching in the name of Jesus, he said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

00:04:39.360 --> 00:04:56.000
All this demonstrates that there are occasions when it would be right to question people in authority, whoever they might be, a government official, an employer, or even a religious leader.

00:04:56.639 --> 00:05:03.040
And to refuse to do anything that conflicts with God's will and purpose.

00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:14.560
Loyalty to God always takes priority over all human authority.

00:05:15.920 --> 00:05:20.639
Peter, like those before him, had learned that lesson.

00:05:20.959 --> 00:05:41.279
He knew that obedience to God surpassed earthly decrees and, like many others, down through the ages, since that time, was willing to sacrifice his own life rather than deny faith in God's power to deliver him.

00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:48.319
Now this was an emboldened Peter, not the one who denied ever knowing Jesus.

00:05:48.639 --> 00:05:51.279
Compromise was not an option.

00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:56.959
If something was against the will of God, then he would stand against it.

00:05:58.399 --> 00:06:18.959
So when we come to today's reading, we might find it a little strange that Peter, like Paul in fact, doesn't challenge a system that countenances slavery, but instead says that slaves are to be submissive to their masters.

00:06:20.079 --> 00:06:28.959
Well, before we try to understand why that might be the case, let us first look at what Peter is actually saying in this passage from his letter.

00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:54.560
In 1 Peter 2, verse 18, Peter is focusing on one particular relationship, that between household servants or domestic slaves in the Roman world, who he says should submit to their masters with respect, even if those masters are harsh or unreasonable, not just when they're kind.

00:06:55.680 --> 00:07:06.240
Peter says that in being submissive, they're not validating their master's abuse, which is clearly wrong, but they're showing reverence to God.

00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:13.839
The phrase with all fear or respect refers to reverential awe of God.

00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:34.079
This follows on from the preceding passage that Dave was leading us through a couple of weeks ago, which calls on Christians to live differently under difficult circumstances, trusting that God is the ultimate judge.

00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:42.079
It's the same advice that Peter, that Paul gives in Ephesians chapter 5, chapter 6.

00:07:42.720 --> 00:08:07.519
Paul issued to bondservants another word used to denote slaves, saying that they should obey their masters with respect, fear, and sincerity of heart, and even to harsh masters, to be well pleasing and honest, because in doing so they were witnessing to their faith, not simply working for human approval.

00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:14.160
Well, in verse 21, Peter points to Jesus as our example.

00:08:14.399 --> 00:08:22.879
He says that just as Jesus suffered, so as his followers, we will be subjected to suffering.

00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:29.920
But when insulted, the godly person returns good for evil.

00:08:30.240 --> 00:08:48.320
He goes on to say in verse 23 that we should refuse to retaliate against those who attack us, never threaten those who cause us suffering, instead, going into the next section of his letter, we should bless those who insult us.

00:08:48.559 --> 00:09:01.840
That's into chapter 3, verse 9, and then on into chapter 3, verse 15, always being prepared to explain the difference that Jesus has made in our life.

00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:08.080
Well, this is very much Jesus' teaching on the Sermon on the Mount, isn't it?

00:09:08.320 --> 00:09:13.120
Where Jesus said we should renounce any form of retaliation.

00:09:13.600 --> 00:09:19.600
In fact, if you are slapped on the right cheek, then turn the other to him also.

00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:26.399
We should love our enemies and bless those who curse us.

00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:36.799
Even though Peter is describing a master-slave relationship, one that we no longer countenance.

00:09:37.679 --> 00:09:42.320
Nevertheless, there are lessons that we can draw from this.

00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:52.639
At various times in our lives, all of us enter into contractual relationships, that's legally binding agreements.

00:09:53.279 --> 00:10:10.159
The most obvious example is when an employer offers us a salary for our time and skills, or when we hire a tradesperson, say a plumber or builder, to carry out a particular job.

00:10:10.480 --> 00:10:21.360
These are situations where either we place ourselves under someone else's authority, or they place themselves under our authority.

00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:43.600
In both cases, as Christians, we should show ourselves to be exemplary, providing high quality in terms of work and behavior, being worthy of admiration and a model or a pattern for others to follow.

00:10:44.799 --> 00:10:46.960
That's quite a challenge, isn't it?

00:10:47.600 --> 00:10:57.200
Especially when we're faced with a difficult work situation, something I'm sure that many people here have actually experienced.

00:10:57.840 --> 00:11:09.679
What do we do when an employer is unfair, or harsh even, or when a work situation is clearly unethical?

00:11:10.559 --> 00:11:14.399
How as a Christian should we respond?

00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:28.000
Well, all situations are different, and blanket advice is probably unhelpful, but first of all, we should be clear about the issue, to have evidence well documented.

00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:43.519
Then, in order to achieve a quick resolution and maintain a positive relationship with one's employer, it's perhaps best to first raise the matter in an informal way.

00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:55.200
Most employers do not want the hassle and cost, not just in terms of money, of going through a formal procedure.

00:11:56.720 --> 00:11:59.039
Even then it's not easy.

00:11:59.759 --> 00:12:03.440
Any form of confrontation is difficult.

00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:07.440
And it is crucial to find the right approach.

00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:22.879
And the people who do this best are those who are able to confront in a loving way, who, to again quote Paul in this letter to Ephesians chapter 4, speak the truth in love.

00:12:24.080 --> 00:12:35.360
To use a golfing analogy, it is selecting the right club to use, especially when what is required is a delicate chip to the green.

00:12:36.960 --> 00:12:44.320
We also need to remember that confrontation is not always the right course.

00:12:45.039 --> 00:12:53.279
Not every wrong statement needs to be challenged, not every critic needs to be refuted.

00:12:54.080 --> 00:13:02.559
Sometimes it's best to see if the situation resolves itself without us having to stir.

00:13:04.720 --> 00:13:08.639
But what if we are the focus of the complaint?

00:13:09.679 --> 00:13:15.039
Many of us work in stressful situations with strict deadlines.

00:13:15.759 --> 00:13:21.840
We are all prone to make errors, errors of judgment perhaps.

00:13:22.080 --> 00:13:29.519
There are occasions when any of us might say something or do something we later regret.

00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:40.000
Even in these circumstances, if even if it means losing face, it is best to come clean and admit our error.

00:13:40.720 --> 00:13:45.600
Good employers will understand an occasional lapse.

00:13:45.919 --> 00:13:48.480
They too have feet of clay.

00:13:49.600 --> 00:13:56.320
You may have heard of the boss who asked his employee, who's the stupid one?

00:13:56.960 --> 00:13:58.080
You or me?

00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:07.360
And the employee replying that everyone knew that he only never hired stupid people.

00:14:08.720 --> 00:14:42.879
As Christian employees, as servants, to use Peter's description, which in a sense is what we all are, even in difficult circumstances, yea, even if we feel ourselves being treated unfairly or perhaps harshly, Peter urges us to keep a clear conscience by continuing to do our best, to take it patiently, because this is commendable before God.

00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:51.679
In fact, the rest of the passage, verses 21 to 25, explains why this should be the case.

00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:55.360
Godly living involves suffering.

00:14:55.679 --> 00:15:00.960
Peter says we know this because Jesus suffered as our example.

00:15:01.679 --> 00:15:06.080
As godly people, we should return good for evil.

00:15:06.320 --> 00:15:14.639
When insulted, we should bless, and when caused to suffer, we should never threaten in return.

00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:21.840
These are extreme situations, Peter describes.

00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:32.399
And there are employment laws today that would necessitate action being taken if an employee was so denigrated.

00:15:32.639 --> 00:15:39.440
But nonetheless, the underlying spirit of what Peter is saying is still true.

00:15:40.080 --> 00:15:44.320
Whatever our employment, we are God's servants.

00:15:45.759 --> 00:15:52.559
We should want to do our best in everything because we are doing it for him.

00:15:54.320 --> 00:16:13.840
The attitude we should have is well described in George Herbert's poem The Elixir, which begins, Teach me, my God and King, in all things thee to see, and what I do in anything to do it as for thee.

00:16:14.399 --> 00:16:29.279
And the poem goes on to say, a servant with this clause makes drudgery divine, who sweeps a room as for thy laws, makes that and the action fine.

00:16:31.039 --> 00:16:42.399
I recall with a great sense of satisfaction the many Christian colleagues with whom over many years I had the good fortune to work.

00:16:43.360 --> 00:17:04.720
What impressed me, as well as other staff and indeed pupils, was their dedication to the profession, their commitment to high standards of work and behavior, their reliability, and what is so important, their good humour, even during tough times, and there were plenty of those.

00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:16.559
They weren't perfect, no one is, but they were well respected and provided good testimony of what it meant to be a Christian in the workplace.

00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:26.799
I'm sure you can think of colleagues, Christian and non-Christian, with whom you too have had the pleasure of working.

00:17:28.480 --> 00:17:31.680
But a word of caution here, you can do too good a job.

00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:38.880
Employee of the month is a good example of how somebody can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

00:17:40.799 --> 00:17:49.759
But thinking of the work situation, it's important that you choose employment for which you are suited.

00:17:50.240 --> 00:17:52.880
I tried lots of jobs over the years.

00:17:53.200 --> 00:17:56.960
I got fired for my first job as a set designer.

00:17:57.440 --> 00:17:59.839
I left without making a scene.

00:18:04.559 --> 00:18:10.400
And I remember a lot of people were shocked when they found out what a bad electrician I was.

00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:14.960
I can't believe I got fired from the calendar factory.

00:18:15.119 --> 00:18:17.119
All I did was take a day off.

00:18:18.640 --> 00:18:24.319
And despite removing all the stains, I still lost my job as a church window cleaner.

00:18:24.640 --> 00:18:25.920
That's all the jokes.

00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:27.039
There are no more.

00:18:28.079 --> 00:18:38.400
Of course, living as we do in the 21st century, coming across a passage like this raises a lot of questions.

00:18:39.440 --> 00:18:58.480
Why are Peter and Paul apparently accepting the status quo and not challenging a system that strips people of liberty is degrading and reduces human beings to chattel property that can be bought and sold.

00:18:59.440 --> 00:19:02.160
And this is very much a live issue, isn't it?

00:19:02.480 --> 00:19:08.880
We used to think that slavery was a thing of the past, something happening on far-flung shores.

00:19:09.920 --> 00:19:26.480
But here in the UK, we are experiencing record levels of people trafficking, forced labour and sexual exploitation, with British boys and girls being targeted by criminals using grooming and blackmail.

00:19:27.599 --> 00:19:34.319
We naturally balk at the idea that such slavery should be countenanced.

00:19:35.200 --> 00:19:44.960
So, why didn't Peter and Paul speak out against a system that robbed people of personal dignity?

00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:58.240
Well, we need to read this letter accredited to Peter and Paul's letters too, in the light of the fact that they believed Jesus' return was imminent.

00:19:58.720 --> 00:20:12.000
In Romans 13,12, Paul wrote to the saints who constituted the churches of Rome, the night is nearly over, the day is almost here.

00:20:13.440 --> 00:20:25.519
And this explains the urgency with which he kept travelling the Mediterranean, now planning a trip to Judea, now an expedition to Spain.

00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:35.920
When he writes in his letters to the Thessalonians, may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

00:20:36.480 --> 00:20:42.000
It showed his enduring anxiety that the world was running out of time.

00:20:42.400 --> 00:20:47.680
It's why Paul was traveling from city to city, warning that time was short.

00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:54.319
His new converts needed to live each day expecting the Son of God's return.

00:20:56.319 --> 00:21:11.279
Ironically, Paul and Peter were living at a time of someone who was parading himself as a son of God, the new young Caesar called Nero.

00:21:12.319 --> 00:21:32.400
In fact, his coterie of dazzled admirers, flatterers really, went further and said that he was the Greek god Apollo, manifest on earth, which naturally pleased this young, new young ruler of the world who knew no bounds.

00:21:33.119 --> 00:21:41.359
His extravagant street parties, to which the masses were invited, were also marked by extreme depravity.

00:21:41.759 --> 00:21:47.920
The summons was to enjoy a fleeting taste of what it was like to be a Caesar.

00:21:49.519 --> 00:21:59.279
But Paul, in his letter to the Romans, had something altogether more startling to offer the ordinary citizens of Rome.

00:22:00.319 --> 00:22:05.519
He offered them a status that Nero would never have thought to share.

00:22:05.839 --> 00:22:14.319
He said in Romans 8, verse 16, people such as they could be adopted by God.

00:22:15.440 --> 00:22:21.599
The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

00:22:22.880 --> 00:22:43.680
But not only ordinary householders, but all those who are not free-born Romans and branded as inferior, such as slaves, and those forced into prostitution, the bargirls and the painted boys in brothels, the slaves used without compunction by their masters.

00:22:44.640 --> 00:22:50.880
Paul was giving them a glimpse of salvation and a new status.

00:22:52.240 --> 00:23:14.960
And this is what Peter is picking up on when he says in verses 21 to 24, to suffer as Christ had done, to be beaten and degraded and abused, was to follow in his steps so that having died to sins, they might live for righteousness and one day share in his glory.

00:23:16.960 --> 00:23:20.000
This was a revolutionary message.

00:23:20.240 --> 00:23:28.240
But as the historian Tom Holland in his book Dominion explains, it raised some pressing questions.

00:23:29.759 --> 00:23:48.960
In the cramped workshops that were the meeting places for these early believers, where they met to commemorate the death of Christ with a communal meal, citizens rubbed shoulders with slaves, men with women.

00:23:49.839 --> 00:24:04.160
If all were equally redeemed by Christ, if all were equally beloved of God, then what are the hierarchies on which the function of even in the homeless Roman household depended?

00:24:06.000 --> 00:24:11.599
It was not an easy one to answer, and Paul shows some ambivalence.

00:24:11.839 --> 00:24:16.799
He refuted any notion that a ranking system should operate amongst believers.

00:24:17.119 --> 00:24:24.799
God, he declared firmly in Romans chapter 2, God does not show favoritism.

00:24:25.680 --> 00:24:32.000
The master of a household was no more or less a son of God than his slaves.

00:24:32.640 --> 00:24:37.119
Everyone then should be joined together by a common love.

00:24:38.400 --> 00:24:51.759
Yet even as Paul, and I'm sure the same could be said of Peter, urged this, he did not push the radicalism of his message to its logical conclusion.

00:24:52.480 --> 00:24:58.880
A slave might be loved by his master as a brother and renowned for his holiness.

00:24:59.200 --> 00:25:07.279
He might even be blessed with the gift of prophecy, but he or she remained a slave.

00:25:08.640 --> 00:25:25.599
And it's why I think earlier in the chapter, 1 Peter 2, verse 11, Peter addresses these Christians living in various parts of Asia Minor, who were suffering because of their faith, as sojourners and pilgrims.

00:25:26.400 --> 00:25:32.240
He was reminding them that they were passing through earth as travelers.

00:25:33.039 --> 00:25:36.640
Their true citizenship was in heaven.

00:25:37.359 --> 00:25:40.960
Like Paul, he believed time was short.

00:25:43.039 --> 00:25:44.240
Excuse me.

00:25:47.839 --> 00:25:56.480
At the end of his letter, 1 Peter chapter 4, verse 7, he says, the end of all things is at hand.

00:25:57.759 --> 00:26:00.160
Christ would return soon.

00:26:00.720 --> 00:26:06.079
There was no time to weave the fabric, the entire fabric of society anew.

00:26:06.720 --> 00:26:08.400
They had to work fast.

00:26:09.119 --> 00:26:17.440
And what Peter makes abundantly clear in his letter is that the early church was a small and often persecuted minority.

00:26:18.160 --> 00:26:35.759
Any attempt to subvert slavery, which was a deeply entrenched institution that was integral to the Roman economy and society, would have met with a swift and violent crackdown by the Roman Empire.

00:26:36.480 --> 00:26:52.240
And despite their probable scorn for the pretensions of Nero, Paul in Romans 13 warned the churches of Rome not to offer open resistance.

00:26:52.720 --> 00:27:00.960
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.

00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:14.160
And there was some method in doing this, as it was Roman power that upheld the peace that enabled Paul and Peter and others to travel the world.

00:27:14.640 --> 00:27:21.599
They didn't want to jeopardize their mission by urging their converts to rebel against it.

00:27:23.440 --> 00:27:33.440
But since the time of the early church, the great cause of social reform has been Christian through and through.

00:27:33.920 --> 00:27:47.920
Whenever I visit Lechlade Baptist Church, a plaque on the wall reminds me of the great Christian social reformer Robert Rakes, 1735 to 1811, the founder of the Sunday School Movement.

00:27:48.319 --> 00:28:07.279
Then there is the MP, William Wilberforce, 1759 to 1833, who for 18 years spearheaded the abolitions movement, culminating in the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833, which finally freed enslaved people.

00:28:08.000 --> 00:28:28.079
And then, of course, there is the famous Victorian politician and evangelical Christian Lord Sharesbury, 1801 to 1885, who dedicated his life to reforming harsh labor conditions, improving mental health care, and promoting education for poor children.

00:28:29.359 --> 00:28:38.720
Of course, what Peter and Paul were saying is even more true today than it was then, if that's possible.

00:28:39.440 --> 00:28:50.720
If Christ's return was imminent then, surely it's even more of an imperative today, 2,000 years later.

00:28:51.759 --> 00:28:57.599
We therefore should have the same zeal for winning people for Christ.

00:28:59.359 --> 00:29:11.519
At the start of this month, Rosalie and I, and nearly 6,000 people from across the globe, attended the leadership conference in the Royal Albert Hall.

00:29:12.400 --> 00:29:24.160
It was immensely encouraging to hear Nicki Gumbel report that across the world, over 38 million people have now completed Alpha.

00:29:25.200 --> 00:29:35.359
And although we hear in this country about many church closures, there are areas of the church where there is prolific growth.

00:29:36.079 --> 00:29:49.359
Nicky Gumble recalled an article written by Jeremy Paxman that appeared in the Financial Times in 2017 about HDB's first church plant, St.

00:29:49.599 --> 00:29:52.000
Peter's Church in Brighton.

00:29:52.720 --> 00:30:13.599
Before the church plant in 2009, the nearly empty huge building was typical of so many traditional parish churches, many of which have been subsequently sold and used as cafes, community centres, theatres, carpet warehouses, and so on.

00:30:14.160 --> 00:30:14.720
But St.

00:30:14.960 --> 00:30:16.640
Peter's was saved.

00:30:17.599 --> 00:30:20.559
In the article, Paxman described St.

00:30:20.720 --> 00:30:33.839
Peter's having as having a relentlessly upbeat message, noting that you could hear the church before seeing its towering neo-Gothic stonework.

00:30:34.079 --> 00:30:36.480
Now this is Jeremy Paxman, remember.

00:30:36.720 --> 00:30:45.119
He goes on to say it would be hard not to be moved by the stories of the souls and lives saved in St.

00:30:45.279 --> 00:30:46.720
Peter's church.

00:30:48.079 --> 00:30:49.759
Remarkably, St.

00:30:49.920 --> 00:30:57.119
Peter's is one of 200 church plants that have sprung from HTB alone.

00:30:57.519 --> 00:30:58.079
And St.

00:30:58.319 --> 00:31:08.559
Peter's is aptly named because it was Peter, the rock, on which Jesus said he would build his church.

00:31:09.279 --> 00:31:19.759
How fortunate we are, as living stones, as Peter calls us in 1 Peter chapter 2, to have the privilege of building on that legacy.

00:31:19.920 --> 00:31:31.680
Not as slaves, not as those experiencing the kind of suffering being endured by those to whom he was writing, but as free men and women.

00:31:32.559 --> 00:31:35.519
Let us not spurn that opportunity.

00:31:37.279 --> 00:31:48.400
In the summer of 64, a few weeks after Nero's notorious street party, a deadly fire broke out in Rome.

00:31:49.039 --> 00:31:50.880
For days it raged.

00:31:52.000 --> 00:31:56.960
Nero, looking around for culprits, fixed on the Christians.

00:31:58.079 --> 00:32:05.599
Some of the condemned, dressed in animal skins, were torn to pieces by dogs.

00:32:06.160 --> 00:32:15.759
Others, lashed to crosses, were smeared in pitch and used as torches to illumine the night.

00:32:16.880 --> 00:32:24.079
Among those put to death, so later tradition was to record, were two famous names.

00:32:24.559 --> 00:32:29.599
One was Paul, beheaded as befitted a Roman citizen.

00:32:30.079 --> 00:32:46.079
The other was Peter, who, according to requests, to reports, requested to be crucified upside down, feeling unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus.

00:32:47.119 --> 00:33:08.559
Peter, he who at the risk of further punishment stood up to the religious police and said in Acts 5, we ought to obey God rather than men, had earned the right to follow Christ's example and endure similar suffering for the sake of the gospel.

00:33:09.759 --> 00:33:30.000
It means that there are no more authentic words to be found in the Bible than when Peter writes, quoting verses 21 to 25 from the message Bible, this is the kind of life you've been invited into, the kind of life Christ lived.

00:33:30.480 --> 00:33:36.400
He suffered everything that came his way so you would know that it could be done.

00:33:36.799 --> 00:33:40.640
And also know how to do it step by step.

00:33:41.519 --> 00:33:46.640
He never did one thing wrong, not once said anything amiss.

00:33:47.599 --> 00:33:52.559
They called him every name in the book, and he said nothing back.

00:33:53.119 --> 00:33:58.160
He suffered in silence, content to let God set things right.

00:34:05.440 --> 00:34:09.760
So we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way.

00:34:11.119 --> 00:34:14.880
His wounds became your healing.

00:34:15.519 --> 00:34:21.920
You were lost sheep with no idea who you were or where you were going.

00:34:23.119 --> 00:34:29.760
Now you're named and kept for good by the shepherd of your souls.

00:34:30.400 --> 00:34:31.039
Amen.

00:34:31.840 --> 00:34:33.679
Let us pray, shall we?

00:34:35.920 --> 00:34:50.960
Father God, we thank you for your only Son, Jesus, who made himself of no reputation and took upon himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

00:34:52.400 --> 00:35:07.360
We thank you that in order that we could be rid of sin, he used his servant body to carry our sins to the cross, so that through childlike faith we might enter his kingdom.

00:35:07.679 --> 00:35:22.239
Where purpose and meaning are not found in satisfying our own appetites and desires, no more me time, but in giving ourselves in his service until his promised return.

00:35:23.280 --> 00:35:40.400
As your adopted children, we ask that you'll give us the will and strength to step by step follow his example so that others too might come to know and trust in you, the one true God.

00:35:41.280 --> 00:35:41.760
Amen.
