Donuts, Lavender, and Goonies Land: Sharlotte and Aunt Steve in Astoria

Sharlotte and her uncle, "Aunt Steve," recap recent Middle School Miles adventures while traveling cross-country and doing online middle school. In a small town in Washington, they visit a donut shop twice—highlighting a warm raspberry jam donut—and a local butcher, where they buy flank steak and tri-tip. They also stop at a lavender farm with a field of lavender, a shop selling lavender items, and fizzy lavender lemonade that Sharlotte shakes too violently. After driving over a high, rollercoaster-like bridge with a KFC at the bottom, they arrive in Astoria, Oregon, home of The Goonies, and plan to visit the local film museum and sites. Sharlotte discusses schoolwork, getting paid to read, an upcoming package with camp clothes and gear, going to summer camp on Sunday, and later flying back to Florida.

We went to a donut place.

Oh, donuts. So we were in this tiny little town in Washington State.

It was cute. It was charming. They had hippies.

And earthy people.

A lot of earthy people.

And a delicious donut shop.

There was the best raspberry jam donut ever because the jam was still warm.

Oh nuts. So we got donuts not once but twice.

Yeah.

But we stayed there. And they were delicious.

That was the first time I've ever gotten up early to go somewhere. And I regretted it the whole entire time.

Except when you had a face full of donuts.

And then it dropped on my lap.

Oh, yeah, you did spill it, didn't you? There was something else. It was right across the street from the bakery, a local butcher shop.

Yeah.

Which is connected to their own ranch where they raise their own cattle. Plank steak. We got tri-tip. You didn't like the skirt steak.

SPEAKER_00 1:33

Nope. I could live with it.

SPEAKER_01 1:35

It was marinated.

SPEAKER_00 1:36

But that's how I found out about the bakery.

And that's how we found out about the bakery.

Because it's like, oh, there's a bakery. And then you're like, ding ding. There's a bakery.

Winner winner chicken dinner. So we left there.

And we went to the lavender farm.

SPEAKER_01 1:51

It was pretty.

SPEAKER_00 1:52

It was cool. They had like a place you could get married. And they had lavender plants, flowers.

A whole field of lavender.

Yeah. And then it's like this little shop where you have like lender.

Everything.

And they had some really good lavender lemonade.

With a little fizz.

Oh, shake your bottle gently.

It's a how'd that work out for you? I shook it.

I shook it violently. I did not realize.

SPEAKER_01 2:19

And then you handed it to me, like, let me open this. Not realizing that it was fizzy.

SPEAKER_00 2:24

Yeah. Well, because you were like, oh, it's a little bit fizzy when you open yours, and I'm like, no, no. Sketchy bridge.

This bridge, just a big bridge. It was a long bridge and it was a high bridge.

SPEAKER_00 2:38

And there was like a smooth drive, and then it was like almost going up a really, really high hill, and then it went up, and then when you went down, it was like a roller coaster. And then the third thing once deep went out is oh, there's a KFC.

There was a KFC at the bottom of the bridge.

I don't. Oh, Goonies. Astoria, Oregon. It's called Goonies.

Which is home of the Goonies.

So we are here in Astoria.

And we're gonna check out the local film museum and some of the other sites tomorrow.

You know, I just realized.

I'm afraid to ask.

So we're doing that tomorrow. But since we're under trees all week, I technically don't really have to do school. But I have to do my workbook and reading, and I finished my book today, which rest of my temperature every day.

And you do a workbook every day for school.

But I have to do more of it.

Plus, what's exciting that's coming along?

My package is coming in. I'm gonna go to summer camp, but I'm only excited for my hooks. I knew that was going. But I got closed because I like clothes. I had to get new tops for camp. Hopefully the And a sleeping bag. And a sand and your pajamas.

So we bought a bunch of stuff for you to take with you to summer camp. And you go to summer camp on Sunday.

Are you excited? So it's this weekend coming up.

Oh yeah. I don't know anymore.

Oh what? I don't know anything about baseball.

We'll have to teach her about who's on first later.

What? I'm scared. It's a whole comedy we've seen about.

Imagine that the name of the player on first is who. And the name of the player on second is what. So who's on first? No, what's on second?

I do all of my laundry. I repack my bag, and then I go on an airplane. Which I don't like airplanes, but on Steve, if I don't go on it, it's probably just gonna drag me on the plane.

Mom said you would have to drop me off at security.

No, I'm gonna try to walk you to the gate.

The goal is to walk you to the gate. It's up to security. I'm pretty sure they're gonna let me. Because you're a minor.

Wait, so how does that work?

We go to the airport, we check you in at the counter.

Wait, what time? Do I have to be up?

SPEAKER_01 5:37

I don't remember. I'll figure it out next week.

I'll figure it out next week while you're at camp.

I don't know. Well yeah, because I'm there for the whole entire week.

What are you looking forward to at camp?

I've seen the things because they have junior and they have seniors. And you didn't tell me if I'm a junior if I'm a senior. Like.

SPEAKER_01 5:56

I think you're a junior.

SPEAKER_00 5:57

If I'm a junior, then I'm gonna be doing arts in class, starting my seat, which is rock climbing. Also, it's like very hippie.

SPEAKER_01 6:07

That's kinda cool.

I'm not hippie though. Maybe we should trade camps. Yeah, camp and I stay here.

SPEAKER_01 6:14

Because I'm not very Do you wanna pay for all the repairs that I'm getting made to the RV while you're at camp?

See now it's not paid for reading live book? I don't think so.

Also, now you're telling people you get paid to read?

SPEAKER_00 6:24

Oh yeah, I do get paid to read. I forgot about that.

You get a dollar for every 20 minutes.

I did 40 minutes, so I should have gotten $15 today.

Oh yeah, but I have to like finish the whole book to get paid. I'll get paid every single day. But I did get paid yesterday. Because you picked rocks out of the I got weird looks yesterday, too.
