Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We break down a social media growth approach that works for service providers, where the real goal is authority, trust, and consistent bookings instead of viral views. We share the exact systems and messaging tests we use to grow organically, stay consistent, and attract clients who are actually a good fit.
• why most social media advice targets content creators, not service-based businesses
• focusing on authority and trust that turns attention into bookings
• using intentional volume early to practice clear messaging
• batching content to stay consistent without burnout
• using trial reels to test hooks and topics with non-followers
• posting mindset shifts that reduce pressure and speed up learning
• keeping videos conversational like talking to a friend
• simple filming setup with a phone plus good lighting
• using the free Edits app, teleprompter scripts, and even ChatGPT for support
• why talking head videos and small imperfections build authenticity
• remembering clients book the person, not only the service
• three content types that drive bookings: authority, pre-qualification, conversion
• repeating yourself on purpose so new audiences learn how to book

Butter Yellow Intro And The Goal
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to the Business of Color Analysis podcast. If you're watching on YouTube, I am wearing my butter yellow today. I've got my butter yellow nails too. And as a spring, it is my latest obsession. But that is not what we are here to talk about today. I want to talk about how to actually grow on social media as a color analyst. If you are a color analyst, stylist, consultant, photographer, or anyone offering a service where people are booking you, the strategy looks very different than what content creators are doing. And this is also the philosophy behind my live workshop, Reals for Real Growth. But I want to break it down so you can understand the thinking behind it and start applying it right away.
Organic Growth And Why Strategy Differs
SPEAKER_00Before we get into strategy, though, I want to share something. In just seven months, my Instagram has grown to almost 8,000 followers, and my Facebook page is at about 19,000 followers. And that growth has been completely organic. No ads, no paid growth. Simply just strategy, consistency, and understanding how to communicate clearly online. So everything I'm sharing today is exactly what I've been doing inside my own business. All right, so part one is that most social media advice is not for you. So a lot of it is created for content creators specifically. Their business model is content, their product is views. But if you run a service-based business, your goal is likely completely different. Your goal is to build authority, attract the right people, and turn attention into bookings. You're not trying to win the internet for the day. You are trying to build trust. And if you've ever felt like you're posting constantly but not getting bookings, you're getting views, but no inquiries, or you're attracting people who are not a good fit, that usually means the strategy just needs a shift.
Intentional Volume Without Burnout
SPEAKER_00But there is an important nuance here. When you are starting, volume matters. When you are early in your business, posting more actually does matter, but not for the reason that most people think. It's not about feeding the algorithm, it's about learning how to communicate. When you are starting, you are learning how to explain what you do, what people respond to, what language resonates, what people are confused about. You need repetition to figure that out. You cannot refine messaging you have never practiced. But when people hear post more, they think that means posting randomly every day and burning out. That is not what I mean. What you want is intentional volume. Which takes me to part three, which is batching content so it doesn't take over your life. The easiest way to post a lot is by batching. Batching means you're not waking up every day thinking, what should I post today? Instead, you sit down and record multiple videos at once. You stay in one headspace, you stay on one or a few topics, and you remove that daily decision fatigue. That is how you stay consistent without feeling like social media is taking over your life. And batching works incredibly well with something that I use a lot, which is trial reels, which I will get into. So I personally like to film on days where I have clients because my hair and makeup is already done. And I will simply switch my dress or my top every I'd say two or three videos. So it looks like I've been filming on different days, but it is all on the same day. And sometimes if you have just an extra 30 minutes, just filming a couple of videos in that time can be really helpful. And one of the things that also makes a big difference is having an ongoing list. This could be questions that you get from clients or people on social media. I always have those listed out so that I can easily pull from those when I have some free time to film.
Trial Reels As Messaging Data
SPEAKER_00So trial reels are data, and I'm always talking to trial about trial reels to everyone that I meet. Everyone who has social media, who maybe is a business owner friend, and so many times they have no idea what a trial reel is. So it is one of the biggest opportunities for growth right now on Instagram. But people either just don't know about them, don't understand them, or they use them incorrectly. And I will say that things are constantly changing with Instagram and Facebook. So the information that I am giving you today might have changed in a few months. So it is very important that you take a little bit of time to make sure that this info is still relevant. But trial reels are really not just a hack, they are data. So when you post a trial reel, Instagram shows it only to people who do not already follow you. So what they're actually testing is does this message make sense to someone who has never heard of me? Most people are posting and just hoping something works. And trial reels allow you to test messaging intentionally. They also remove a lot of emotional pressure. Instead of thinking this better perform, you start thinking, okay, I'm collecting information. And that mindset shift alone makes social media feel way lighter. Okay, so what I'm personally doing right now is posting about five trial reels per day. Now that doesn't mean that everyone needs to do that forever, but I understand the phase of growth that I'm in. And right now I'm testing and scaling as much as possible. Posting multiple trial reels per day lets me see very quickly which hooks work, which topics resonate, what language attracts the right audience. And because they are trial reels, they are not flooding my feed. They are just testing. And this only works because I batch my content. I'm not waking up every day trying to come up with those five videos. I sit down, pick a topic, I'll record a couple of different variations, and then I let data tell me what works. The other reason why trial reels are amazing is because, like I said, they don't flood your feed. And something that does really, really well, like for me, those are my guests her season videos. I can post those over and over again on trial reels, and they are shown to new people who in that in that particular case, it grows my following because I'm only pulling in non-followers.
Stop Overthinking And Talk Like A Friend
SPEAKER_00So the next part is to stop overthinking and just start. Now, I see this constantly with men and women starting in their their color analysis businesses. You have to stop overthinking. I see so many people saying, I'll get around to posting, I'll start once everything is perfect, or I'll start once I feel ready, ready, and months, months go by. If I'm talking to you, you know, you probably understand it's happened to me in the past with my other wedding planning business, but sometimes years go by and you just have to start. I would equate this to a muscle, and the only way to build it is by using it. It's exactly like fitness. The first few workouts feel awkward, they feel uncomfortable, you're sore. But the more you show up, the stronger you get. Social media works exactly the same way, and the more you practice talking on camera and explaining what you do, the easier it becomes. So the next part is that your video should feel like you are talking to a friend. You do not need to necessarily perform, you don't need to sound like a presenter. Think about it as if you're talking to a girlfriend and you're out at lunch. Think, imagine you're sitting at lunch with a friend having a drink together, and she asks you a question about color analysis or about your business or about a season. That is the tone your videos should have. They should be relaxed, they should be conversational, natural, and you are just simply sharing what you know.
Simple Gear And A Free Teleprompter
SPEAKER_00So the next part is that you do not need any fancy equipment. I think people massively overcomplicate the equipment. You don't need some big special setup. You can use your iPhone. I personally use the front camera, and I will say that lighting makes a huge difference. So I definitely recommend using some sort of ring light or other type of light, and it's probably the biggest thing that makes my videos look better. So I have an Amazon storefront where I've saved all of my favorite filming gear, such as the lights, the tripods, the accessories. Now, for your lights, you can definitely use your color analysis lights. I frequently use one that I have, and I have a little um phone holder on there that I utilize constantly when filming. I also have another one that is a tabletop size, and so I can sit at my vanity in my studio and film using that. It's essentially a small light and it has a phone holder on it. I think it is listed as the 10.5 inch tripod on my Amazon storefront. So, really, all you need is a light and your cell phone. I do use a free filming app. I use one called Edits. It is completely free. It was created by Meta and it's very, very easy to use. It also has a teleprompter built in and it has a green screen. So you get all of these cool features for free. So if you ever feel stuck on what to say, I recommend using a teleprompter. You can write a short script and read it out loud while filming. And honestly, you can even use ChatGPT to help you write that script. You can type in your topic, generate an outline, paste it into the teleprompter, and film. It is so simple. This will remove a huge barrier for those of you who feel nervous or anxious talking on camera.
Why Imperfect Videos Win Trust
SPEAKER_00So, next is that simple talking head videos work extremely well. I have been so surprised by this. You do not need fancy editing, you do not need transitions, you do not need to overproduce anything. Some of the highest performing videos are literally just you talking to the camera and sharing something helpful. And what I've noticed is that my least perfect videos usually perform the best. The ones where I stumble over a word or the lighting isn't perfect, and it or it just feels more casual, those have been outperforming the polished ones. And I think it's because the rise of AI is making everything look so perfect that people just aren't sure what's real and what isn't anymore. And so if they see you flub your words a little bit, or something's just a little like off and and maybe there's a small mistake, it actually performs better because they know that you're a real person creating that video. So the goal is not perfection, the goal is clarity and authenticity.
Content That Drives Bookings Plus Repetition
SPEAKER_00So finally, I want to talk about how people aren't just booking you. Sorry, they are booking you. I mean, they're not just booking a color analysis, they they're booking you, the person that they see online, and they want to get to know you before they come in for their color analysis. They want to know who you are, what your personality is like, and whether they're not they're gonna feel comfortable with you. I mean, they're coming over to your studio or your home, and they're not gonna have any makeup on, and it can be very, very vulnerable for women, especially if they're sitting in front of a mirror for 90 minutes, 60 to 90 minutes, and they want to make sure they'll feel comfortable with you. And I always make sure that people feel like when they come in, they're gonna have a fun girls' day with me, and that it's gonna be really, really enjoyable for them. So, social media allows people to get to know you before they even meet you, and that allows you to build trust with them. So I will also say that social media is non-negotiable. This is something I tell people a lot as a business owner today. Social media is not optional. It is a non-negotiable. I'm so sorry to say that, but you have to be on social media and you have to be on there consistently. If you don't want to do it, that is okay, but then you need to hire someone else to do it for you. Maybe they're creating some carousel, cra carousels or reels for you, but visibility is what drives that demand and is what is going to get you booked. So, what I've noticed is that there are three types of content that tend to drive bookings. So, first is authority content, and this shows people that you know what you are talking about. The second is pre-qualification content, and this helps people understand if the service that you offer is right for them. So, for example, they might be in between virtual or in person, or maybe they want to do an event or a group color analysis. It's going to help them decide if you are the right color analyst for them. And then next is conversion content. So this tells people how to book. Uh, it sounds silly, but you know, even if people watch your content frequently, they may not know how to book you. I post constantly about virtual color analysis, and I regularly get comments like, Do I'm in England? What should I do? And I tell them, Oh, well, I offer virtual, and they had no idea. So you really do need to repeat yourself frequently and send them to your website or send them to your booking page all the time. So, uh, what I like about trial reels is that you can test out all three types of this content and you can do so before you add it to your main page. I don't think I mentioned that earlier. That with trial reels, it's shown first to all of your non-followers, and then if it performs well, you can then add it to your page and it'll be shown to your followers as well. So, views are not the goal. So, another important point is that high views do not always equal good leads. Sometimes the video performs well, but attracts the wrong audience. And trial reels or just lots of content in general can help filter that out. I have been very, very lucky that everyone who has come to my studio has absolutely been my target market and who I am trying to work with. So trial reels help filter that out, they help attract the right people, and your content is also not just trial reels, but your content in general is also going to repel the wrong people. And that is the goal. So another thing is that repetition builds trust. So people worry about repeating themselves, but repetition builds trust. New people are discovering you every single day. So you are not repeating yourself to the same people, you are sharing the same truth or the same content with new people. And over time, you build a library of messages that work and messages that attract the right clients, messages that generate bookings. And this is when content becomes a real asset. And I will say that in order to feed that algorithm, you need to be posting pretty much every single day. But if you're not going to post every single day, I recommend finding something that you can do. Maybe it's three days a week, maybe it's two days a week, whatever is whatever you're able to do, pick it, like decide on what it is, how many times a week, and stick to that every single week. And just as a reminder, you can reuse content that is absolutely okay. So another thing I want to add is that it should be fun to create content. Have a great time with it. Like I said earlier, like you're talking to a friend or you're trying to connect with someone. Have bring some joy into it. Have lots of fun and look at it as just sharing your knowledge or sharing your business. Act excited. Act show them how happy you are to be doing color analysis for as a career. So this is one of the reasons why I created Reels for Real Growth because I don't think it's so much about trends or posting endlessly. I think it's about building systems that grow a real business because growth doesn't come from doing more necessarily, it comes from doing the right things on purpose. So if you are interested in learning more about Reels for Real Growth, so I sell it on my page consistently. And then I also do live events quarterly that you can attend, and then you can also ask questions in real time. I go into much more in much more in depth than I did today. And this is kind of just some of the subjects that we review during Reels for Real Growth workshop.
