This week we're getting real about temptation in the Christian life. We're talking about what it looks like to follow Jesus while still fighting your flesh, how temptation actually works, and how to run to God instead of shame when you're in the middle of it.

Hey everybody, welcome back to the pod. I'm Amber and I'm Alyssa. And this is In Good Faith Podcast. I feel like that we nailed it that time. I feel like we haven't said it in that sequence before, and that one worked. Okay. We're only four months into this thing. Here's your water. Oh. Well, hello everybody. Happy Friday. Thanks for tuning in again. We're glad you're here, Peruche.
SPEAKER_02We hope that you have a good Friday and a fun weekend ahead. Yes. Do you have any weekend plans that you would like to share? I do. I'm going on a bachelorette trip. Going to Fort Lauderdale.
SPEAKER_01That's fun. I want to go. Shelby, if you're listening to this, I'd like I I would have liked to be invited, but I would have liked to be invited to your friend's stuff too.
SPEAKER_02Shelby's my friend too. Okay. Can I borrow some of that lip gloss?
SPEAKER_01Or actually, never mind. I have some.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're going to Fort Lauderdale. Technically Pompano Beach. But who who needs to know? Yeah. It's all the same. And I'm excited. It's gonna be hopefully like a chill weekend. Hopefully. But who knows?
SPEAKER_01Would it be cute though? I'm sure, I'm sure it would be. Oh, shout out. So any uh other off life updates besides that? What's been going on?
SPEAKER_02Oh, yes, yes. It was pretty scary. It was kind of what I expected. It was neat, though. Like, I think it's a place that you would you have you ever had a dream? I think it's a place that like would be fun to go see, just to say you went to New Orleans. You listen to some authentic jazz, authentic European jazz, according to Zaya's teacher. Yes. We went to Fritzels, which is like a European jazz club or something. Very cool. Good music. But it's on Bourbon Street, and Bourbon Street is like that. Must be where they like hold the heart of Mardi Gras. Yeah. It's just music from every direction at full volume. Like pure confusion.
SPEAKER_01I just feel like pupils would be dilated. I would be Yeah, it was crazy overstimulated.
SPEAKER_02There was at one point two like marching bands going at once on the same street. Two marching bands? Like not they weren't marching, but like they were there. Everything a marching band would have except for the marching. And I did, there was a lot of voodoo branded stuff. Yuck. I did eat some voodoo flavored chips, and I do have some.
SPEAKER_01Did you cough up blood that night?
SPEAKER_02No, they were incredible. Unfortunately. It was so good. I'm glad it was nice though. Yeah, I ate some jambalaya. That's fine. Life-changing. It was just you told me, but I forgot. It was just like rice and stuff. Yeah, rice, chicken, and sausage, which I usually don't like sausage, but like it was good in it. And me and dad went to eat and he got wings. And I got the jambalaya because I've been searching for jambalaya because I have to have an authentic meal in New Orleans. And he tried a bite of mine and he packed up his wings and went up and ordered jambalaya. He packed up his wings. Yeah, I'm gonna take these to go. I'm gonna eat these later. It was really good. I did see a crystal ball. There were some. Oh, that's so scary. Down in the French quarters, the French quarters were quite gnarly. I felt very uncomfortable there. And yeah, there was people like there was a lot of homeless people in this specific area and people doing like you know how they have their little things set up to tell your fortune and stuff. There's a bunch of those with like crystals and then an actual crystal ball.
SPEAKER_01That's disgusting. That's so weird. Scary. But I'm glad you're back safe and sound.
SPEAKER_02Very safe, very sound.
SPEAKER_01I my life update isn't really cool, but again, guys, for the last time, that's why we call them mediocre life updates. But I I think I'm did I already talk about the tomato plant? I can't remember. Well, we found a tomato plant that we thought was a weed, and I got some clippings, and I'm harboring, I don't think that's the right word, but I'm trying to grow some tomato plants. Harboring? Like keeping them safe is what I was going with where where I was going with that. But I think just propagating, I should have just used propagating. I am doing that to some tomato plants, and I'm waiting for them to get roots, but they haven't yet. But I made like a whole meal from these tomatoes that I got from work. It was really cool. That is very cool.
SPEAKER_02I would like some tomatoes.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Give me some sprigs.
SPEAKER_01I'll cut some whenever I'm back in office. Did I talk about I can't remember what I've talked about? Like my life is so boring. Like, I have the same life updates for about around three weeks. But Fox 13 News was in my pottery class. They did like a whole little segment of like what was going on. Like, I think like the art center got like some kind of grant. I don't know why that would need to be on Fox 13 News. But anyways, we were. So my hands may or may not make an appearance. Do you know when it's airing, did they say? No. Probably already did. Yeah. Probably missed my chance of seeing that. Like, how do you Google that? I don't even know how to look that up. But yeah, he was recording and like getting B-roll of me sticking. I had like a tongue in my hand and I was dipping some pots into the glaze. I'm like, I just got my nails done. Hand model. Yeah. Add that to my hand modeling portfolio. But yeah, he didn't interview me, which was weird because I thought I did wheel pottery, but I thought the butter dish that I was uh making over here was pretty good, but he interviewed the person next to me with her project. So really yeah, it was actually quite good, which is crazy because this was like her first time touching clay. I was just like this older woman, and she's like, ah, I don't know what to make. I don't know what to make. And then she was like drawing things. The whole first class, she was just like drawing stuff. I was like, this lady don't know what she's doing. And then holy cannoli. Yeah, and then I I I had to leave early the next class, and I came back this past class. I'm like, holy crap, like this girl's stuff is good. This girl, you said she's like an ultra woman. Yeah, she's actually probably I think she said that she was 80 something. Um hey girl. This little girl. This little girl has some talent that she didn't recognize that she had, but her son also works for the art center. So I feel like she had some help at home. Yeah, maybe. Because she did say that she was working for a little bit of nepotism. I think so. I think that's what that's why they interviewed her. I bet. Anyways, it was a cute little project she had going, but I thought my butter dish represented America well.
SPEAKER_02That was the whole except you are not in it for the the art show. You're in it to decorate your house.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So I think I already explained this, but like we have to do like a whole project that like represents clay in America, blah, blah, blah. I was wanting to represent things that go in my home and look good. So whatever. But we made butter in butter charts and stuff in America. Like, I felt like it went with the theme. Everyone's like, what are you working on over there? I'm like, I'm working on a candle holder. What are you doing? What are you doing? She making the Statue of Liberty. Like, I have I am in this results. Yeah, Blake's project is crazy. You can't hardly get it off the table. I wonder how that went. I said, bro, that's gonna blow up in the kiln. Like 1000%. I cannot wait for you to see what his looks like. Um, but I'm boring you guys about that. But yeah, my tomatoes, the pottery. This was my butter dish. I spent, I had to wait like an hour or not wait, but I like worked overtime. And I was even gonna have to go into like the open like session because I could not make this part, like the thing that covers the butter dish. It's almost impossible. You I won't get into it. No, it's okay. I am I've talked too long about pottery. But today on the quad, we're talking about temptation. Ooh.
SPEAKER_02Crazy. It's a bit taboo. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We are breaking the glass wall or ceiling. I always say that wrong. I always say I'm like breaking the glass wall, but it's breaking the glass window. And that's also not even the context that that statement should be used. Yeah. I think what you said was correct. It's so taboo.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if it even is so.
SPEAKER_02It's not because you can be tempted by so many different things. I was tempted by the chocolate cake sitting in my fridge last night.
SPEAKER_01You want to know how I resisted temptation today at work? There was a wedding that left the top tier of their cake, and they just said, have it. Rokay. Rokay, Raggie. Yeah. So we kept it and everyone else in the office ate it. No shame, no shame. I don't I don't say this too. I used to be like that too. I used to be like that too once upon a time. Last night when I got home, I made cookies. I was that was my once upon a time was last night. But today, I was a changed woman at work. I did not eat the cake. Or because it wasn't chocolate, correct?
SPEAKER_02It was a flavor you didn't like.
SPEAKER_01How do you know? It was vanilla with vanilla frosting, yucky.
SPEAKER_02And so I resisted temptation. You never ate cake though. No. So that's not even resisting anything. If they had brownies, you would have eaten them.
SPEAKER_00Oh, five, six, seven of them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so we're all tempted in different ways. We'll kind of go over that. Did you write down like any ways that you feel like you're tempted in this life?
SPEAKER_02I didn't write down any ways that I feel tempted, but some examples I have written down. Yeah, yeah, shoot. So, okay, I'll just start running these out. Anger, like lashing out at people and just like being mean. I feel like that can be a temptation. I didn't write that down for myself, but I'll add it to my list. I am tempted to scream at her. Greed. It's like wanting more money and status and possessions. I feel like that is a it's like an odd temptation. Not an odd, but like it's an obscure yeah.
unknownWhat's the other word?
SPEAKER_02Like, oh, I'm tempted to make more money. Yeah, so am I. But like you'll do anything to like do that or whatever. Lust, gossip, dishonesty, envy. Basically, like any sin though, right? I uh yeah, probably. And then this one kind of resonated comfort, like avoiding share, avoiding responsibilities, prayer, church, like kind of like laziness almost responsibilities, that kind of stuff. Yeah, I'll add that to my list as well. What's on your list?
SPEAKER_01I I really just like wrote down two that I feel like I struggle with is like being tempted by doubt and being tempted by distraction, which kind of falls into the like comfort. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I wouldn't say so much laziness because I don't think that like I'm lazy or we're being lazy. It's like busyness, distraction, comfort. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I uh so like tempted by doubt for a second. I'm like, what like how like because I saw it and I'm like, what are different ways that we're tempted? Because like I I'm not tempted, like I feel like you hear temptation and you're like, oh, like sexual temptation, like all of these other things that thank the Lord, like I'm not tempted by. And like doubt was introduced, like you think back to the Garden of Eden and like Eve, and like how the serpent or the enemy he like tempted Eve with like the apple and like like that, and then like that all came from doubt though. Like, did God really say that? Is that really true? Will you really have like you know what I mean? So it's like he tempted her, led her into temptation with those little seeds of doubt, and that's really big for me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I didn't really think about that, but that's true. Yeah, so same thing with like fear. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I also said like tempted by distraction, but that's again like leading into like for me, it's like the busyness and distraction, and like I get home and it's all of these responsibilities that aren't sinful, like it's things like legit responsibilities, but it's like I get so distracted by these little things, and it is it almost feels like a temptation because it's like I don't know, like I'm just thinking of how I get home from work, and then I'm immediately tempted to like sit on my couch and like get on my phone because I need to look this thing up. It's like you don't really need to look this thing up right now. You don't need to message this person back asking about this thing right now. Like maybe like let's sit down and like I don't know, like maybe let's have a time of just like prayer. Let's make dinner and put on worship music or any like whatever else I should be doing, I don't do because of these little distraction things that seem so important. And it is like a temptation. Yeah. And like specific, I'm gonna go back to my phone beating this dead horse. But it's like that distraction I'm tempted by because it gives it's like, okay, like I'll just have like five minutes on my phone to like relax. Like a cigarette, yeah, yeah. Like you think, or I don't smoke, but I'm sure that is how a cigarette is to some people, but like just like I just need something to take the edge off, like for my day. Like, and you think it's gonna give you like this relaxation and whatever escapism, and it just whatever. And yeah, so those are my ways that I feel like I am I lead into temptation. And that is one of the is that a Ten Commandment? What? Temptation. Um shalt or no, thou shalt not tempt. No, I don't think it is. Cut that out.
SPEAKER_02Um, so uh I well you can go ahead with like what you wrote down or however you want to start this. Well, I just wrote down the definition of what temptation is. So temptation is the desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise. And it's usually always something wrong, unwise, unhelpful, unproductive. Like you're not really tempted to do good things. I mean sure, but whenever you talk about temptation, it's usually negative and not good for you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Most times, most often. Also, I was thinking of the Lord's Prayer. It was latest on to temptation. Not guys, I swear I'm okay. It's close. Yeah, so I just kind of like wrote some ideas on like kind of how to combat temptation and I broke it into two parts. So like first off, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Let's just clear the air. God does not tempt you. If you're being tempted, it's not from the Lord. All right, you can continue.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so planning ahead. I feel like that is one way to combat temptation and falling into that. And if you think of like a diet or like you're eating healthy or whatever, you gotta think about your goals, where you're going, where you're headed, what you wanna overcome and accomplish. Okay. So it's like if you have an issue with getting on your phone after work, I have a friend that struggles with that.
SPEAKER_00I don't know who it is, but asking for a friend.
SPEAKER_01Um, anyways, if you're like me and are tempted by that, you have to plan ahead. So it's like, okay, when I get home, I'm going to put my phone in this room, turn on a combination safe. In a combination safe inside my locked closet, and then like have this other thing that you're gonna be doing. Like you have to like plan ahead so you don't fall into the trap.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like if you're just like kind of like willy-nilly, it's like, okay, yeah, path of least resistance, you're just gonna fall right back into it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking. Like, how I don't know, if you're tempted by drinking or like sexual things, take yourself out of the yeah, out of the out of the situation. Yeah, out of the phone. Don't put yourself in the situation in the first place. Remove yourself from it completely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02If you're tempted by your phone, like what you said, like put it behind your back tire, run it over. Crush it, run it over, throw it in the river.
SPEAKER_01Where's the nearest river? Yeah, so I like back to like if you're on a diet, I never even finished that thought. Like don't buy sweets. Don't buy sweets, then you can't have it. Don't even walk in the center aisles, like plan your route in the grocery store and like pack healthy snacks, pack healthy lunches. So, me every day at work, I gotta have a sweet treat because I'm bored. And it's like pack something in your lunchbox so you don't fall into the temptation.
SPEAKER_02Unfortunately, when it comes to like sweet treats during the day, if I'll be like, I'll try to plan ahead and pack like all of these raisins are sweet. That that'll be good. Yeah. And I'm like, no. Disgusting! Door dash a donut.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, door dash a I would never. A half dozen. But yeah, you're less likely to fall into old habits or bad habits because you have the plan in place. Plan ahead. And I like marked it in my Bible. Let's see if I can find it quickly. But Proverbs four, 26 through 27. It's gonna get so mad at me. Proverbs four. I didn't even mark it. That's stupid. So 26 through 27 says, ponder the path of your feet and let all your ways be established. So basically, like consider where you're going and plan it out. Like you have to ponder those things. So ponder the path of your feet. Feet, have the plan in place, let your ways be established. So I just feel like that is my first way to combat. Exactly. Oh, and then I also have a note, and I did mark this page. I found like this little pastoral application note in my Bible here. And I feel like it fits so well with that. So it says, this is I'm in Hebrews uh 3.13. So it says, much of the, this is this is just the pastoral note. Much of the power of sin lies in its deceitfulness. Sin lies in the way it presents itself to us, in that what it promises to do and in what it calls itself. Sin is also deceitful in the excuses it makes for both before and after sin. And I feel like that kind of plays into like the path of least resistance, kind of like it's telling you all of these lies, like it's it's super easy to do this, and like it's gonna give you that if you just like go whatever. I cannot stand how I just can't come up with examples off the top of my head and I'm saying things like go do this and do that and do whatever. But I hope people know what I'm talking about. But it's like it's so deceitful. And like if we have our plan of action in place, I feel like that's so helpful. But yeah, moving on.
SPEAKER_02I think that's good. I since I have the same Bible as you know, I have a pastoral application as well. Okay, yeah, let's hear it. So this is for resisting temptation. It says the highest and best motive for resisting temptation is love for God. Some resist temptation because they fear either bad consequences or what people will think, but the best motive is focused on God to love him with greater power and passion than it is to love the sin.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So as long like get in your word and build a relationship with the Lord, and those temptations they'll still be there, but like your love for the Lord is greater, so you opt to serve him rather than yourself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it goes back to like when your parents would say, like, I'm disappointed in you. Yeah. And I'm like, yeah, that one hurt. And it's like, I don't I love my mom and I don't want to do like I don't, I don't know, I'm just like whatever to like make her disappointed and like hurt her heart. And it's the same way, like with our relationship with the Lord, like I don't want to disappoint him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It's not like you feel oh stupid. God doesn't let me do this. It's like, well, it turns into I don't want to do this. Yeah. Because it's gonna disappoint him.
SPEAKER_01And I feel like Christians have like there's just like a bad rap, I feel like, that God has with non-Christians or non-Christians have with God. Sorry. And it's like there's so many rules and so many you can't have any fun if you're a Christian, but it's not like that. Like we everybody has free will, everyone knows that. But it's like as a Christian, I don't want to do these things to disappoint my Lord. Like, I just don't want, I don't know. Like, yes, he shows grace and he's merciful and he still loves us, but it's like you just don't want to disappoint him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And you don't want to abuse that grace, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Just because you can. Yeah. I remember mom like teaching us like that sticks out in my head. Like, you can't just keep sinning and be like, oh, it's fine, like God will forgive me. Yeah, it doesn't count.
SPEAKER_02Don't do that. Also, what if when you're sinning before you can ask for forgiveness? Yeah, then what? Yeah. Oh Lord, oh man, I was about to ask. Can you do me one more solid? Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_01But touching back on, we said something that I was gonna connect to, but of course I forgot. But like bi pastoral application note, I don't know. But touching back to like how to combat sin, we're not always able to plan ahead, you know? Like sometimes it's just like, whoa, like it's in our face. Like whatever you're struggling with can just like pop up on a whim. And I feel like when you didn't plan ahead, like the number one like SOS you have to do, like your emergency whatever, is to cry out to the Lord and like quote scripture and use that as your sword and your shield, and just like your source of strength there. And I feel like a big thing with that is is also memorizing scripture. I feel like I don't do like my memory. I I struggled in school, you guys. It's not very good. And so I get self-conscious with that because it's like I've never like, yes, I know like some scripture, but I feel like I struggle with like memorizing scripture. That's what I feel dumb about. But like I feel like I want to really, and I have that app on my phone that I've been like going through and like I work every day to like memorize different verses, and it actually has been kind of helpful, but I feel like drop the application. It's called Bible memory. Bible memory, yeah. So it goes through and like teaches you like different like memory verses or whatever. I just stuttered, sorry. But I want to be that person that like whenever I am like spiraling in my doubt. Yeah, that's it. I don't have my glasses on, but whenever I'm spiraling in my doubt, I want to just be able to like pull these verses and just be like, no, the truth is this, like God says this, and this is a lie that I'm being told right now. And let's not play that game. Like, let's not, let's not go there. And just like having that in my back pocket to be able to like whip out and use as my sword. And like he also tells us to to cry out to him and like he's going to help us. I wrote it down in Psalm 50. Where like was I on something whenever I like marked these pages? Let's find Psalm 50, guys. Give me a second. I thought that I did like a little. Oh, literally right here. So in Psalm 50, verses 50, oh, verse 15, it just says, Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. Simple as pie, my guy. Like, he's literally telling us to call upon him, and like he will help. He sympathizes with us, like Jesus fully God, fully man, like he there's not a temptation that he hasn't had. You know, like he has been tempted, he has been tried, like he he knows, like he was fully human. And so he sympathizes with us, he shows us mercy in that temptation, like we're human. Temptation is not the sin. It's uh acting yeah, there you go, giving in to the temptation. That's the sin.
SPEAKER_02And so everybody's tempted. Yeah, it's just how do we deal with that?
SPEAKER_01And then jumping back to Hebrews verses or chapter five verses 15 and 16. This is just basically talking about like how Jesus faced temptation and like his sympathy towards us in it. So this is saying, or it's about our compassionate high priest. It says, for we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. So he didn't act on the temptation, but he was tempted in all points that we are. So every single way that we as humans are tempted, he has been too. He's gone through it. So like that's what allows him to have sympathy towards us. He knows what we're going through. And it's like, you know how you have like a mentor like that you go to and like ask for help. I feel like that's kind of like that. Like news flash. Like they've been through it. Like you go to people who have like been through these things and like they're able to like sympathize you and like give you that. This is a bad example, but you know what I mean. And then verse 16 says, Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in the time of need. And then kind of just like the little note that my study Bible has, I highlighted that too, because it was really good. But it says, He knows and he feels what we go through. Jesus knows what it is like to be tempted and to battle against sin. Though he was never stained by sin, he can sympathize with our weaknesses and our temptations. And then because we have a high priest who is both all-powerful and compassionate, we can come boldly to his throne. So he's telling us to he is our help.
SPEAKER_02He is our source of help. Run towards him, not away from him. He's not like mad at you for being tempted.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, again, it's that's not the sin. It's acting on that temptation and burying yourself within it. And then, oh, this like this got me because I wrote down, you will never outgrow temptation. Because we're in a broken world. That's true. And it's like you this is me, because I have insecurity issues, it's it seems starting to realize some things here, but like I feel so guilty and stupid because I feel like okay, like I have been like really actively like in my walk with the Lord for some time now. And I'm like, what's the deal here? Why am I still not on the other side of this temptation? Like, why am I still being tempted? And like you just feel kind of silly. Honestly, it gets worse the you are in your walk. Yeah, I think the closer you are to God and like your relationship, the stronger that is with him. I feel like the more you're tried.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Like the more the enemy try my life. Yeah, like put like roadblocks in your way. Because his whole thing is to destroy you. That's his whole game. But it's like, I feel like the enemy can use temptation itself, like temptation itself, to make you feel guilt and shame. So it's not even like acting on the sin of temptation. I think it's like just the temptation.
SPEAKER_02You're you're feeling this way.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you're thinking about that. You're disgusting, you're such a weirdo. You should be ashamed of yourself. Yeah. And it's like me, like with my doubt. I'm like, like I'll just like start spiraling and I'm like, bro, like nothing's happening. Like, I uh I won't even get into that because we can't. We can't get into all that. But it's like you you fall into that doubt, and then like I feel guilty for feeling the doubt. So it's like double, it's doubling down on me. And so I feel crazy from this side and this side, and I'm not even like sometimes I'm not even fully in it, but it's like I have a little thought, I have a thought, and I'm like, God, am I even gonna get married? Like, I don't even see this happening. And then it's like oop, gotcha there. Don't you feel dumb now? And I don't think it's like a lack of faith. I don't think it's because you're a bad Christian, I think it's because you're human.
SPEAKER_02And we're not perfect people.
SPEAKER_01I mean, like the most perfect uh person ever, Jesus, was tempted. So that's some validation there that you're okay.
SPEAKER_02And like whenever you are feeling tempted to doubt yourself or fear or drink or do whatever you're tempted by, you have the authority to rebuke whatever that is. Yeah, like you can tell it to go away, and like you have the power to do that.
SPEAKER_01Amen, amen. Yes and amen. Yeah, guys, let's not be intimidated by the devil. Let's let's put him in his place.
SPEAKER_022026, put the devil in his place.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Anyways, well, that is our little just our thoughts and concerns, questions, our notes and thoughts. Notes and thoughts. That's what Alyssa's journal says over there. But yeah, that's our take on temptation. So just don't do it, guys. It's that easy, simple. Just stop, stop doing it, y'all. Yeah, easier said than done, my guy. But we'll be praying for you. Any prayer requests that like if you guys are struggling with anything that you're being tempted by, like, we still have that link.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how much we do, we have it somewhere. Yes, and I can post a link where you can always go and like share your prayer requests or anything, and it'll be all anonymous.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um we love you guys. And that was it. That was that. Alright, we'll see you guys next week. Bye bye.
