Africa A to Z
Africa is often spoken about, but rarely introduced.
In this opening episode of Africa A to Z, we begin with orientation. We take time to meet Africa as a vast, living continent shaped by deep histories, diverse regions, and many ways of being.
This episode offers listeners a grounding introduction to Africa’s size, geography, regions, and complexity, while gently naming how incomplete narratives have shaped global understanding. Rather than rushing toward detail, we slow down to create context, curiosity, and care for the journey ahead.
Africa A to Z explores the African continent one nation at a time through an Africana lens, centering history, culture, knowledge systems, and lived experience. This first episode sets the foundation for listening slowly, thoughtfully, and with intention.

A is for Algeria | Africa A to Z Podcast
In this episode of Africa A to Z, we explore Algeria — the largest country in Africa and a nation shaped by colonization, resistance, revolution, and cultural resilience.
We examine Algeria’s name, capital city (Algiers), system of government, major industries including oil and natural gas, and the long period of French colonization that began in 1830. We discuss the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962), one of the most significant anti-colonial struggles of the 20th century, and how Algeria ultimately secured its sovereignty.
Through an Africana lens, we also explore Algeria’s Amazigh (Berber) heritage, Arabic and French linguistic influences, Islam as a central religious tradition, Saharan geography, Mediterranean connections, music traditions such as Raï, and the cultural identity that continues to evolve today.
Algeria’s story is essential for understanding North Africa, colonial history, Pan-African movements, and global liberation struggles.
If you want to understand Africa beyond stereotypes and headlines, this episode is a powerful place to begin.
