Is Mordecai a secret spy?  Is Odette controlling everything and is conspiring with the Shadow Mimics?  We really can't make this up... well, we can but we just spend a lot of time talking about an impossible theory.  But in the world of Dungeon Crawler Carl, the impossible comes true all the time.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Mongo is appalled. I am Corbett, and I am perplexed more than appalled today. How about you, Mike?

SPEAKER_01

I'm appealed. Not quite rising to the level of appalled. I'm just appealed. Appeal deficit disorder. That's me.

SPEAKER_00

Is that like what bananas get?

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. Exactly what bananas get.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, so we're talking about Dungeon Crawler Carl, like always, because I don't know, we have nothing else to do. Why not? This time around, I I read a fan theory. It was on Facebook, but it was actually on Reddit and a whole bunch of others, where somebody put out an idea, and it's an interesting one. I don't know if I totally believe it, but let's throw it out there that Mordecai in the new book is not Mordecai. That he's actually a shadow member. The theory goes that Audette, because she is a god in the in the game, and gods can go anywhere they want to at this point. In fact, even out of the game, which is kind of scary. So Audette could easily go talk to Mordecai anytime she wants. Really easily. In fact, she's probably texting the second she got in the game because she was very, very, very, very specific to Carl about getting Mordecai on the team. I don't know if I 100% believe it because Mordecai is always changing from one form to another, and it's always kind of fun to wonder what his next form is going to be. In this particular last book, he's a shadow mimic. Oh, by the way, spoilers, we're on book eight. So well, he's uh what was it, a gloom wraith? In the in the second one, which you don't see him, so he could be anything. It was the uh uh Amorpheus uh the flaming eyeball. Well, no, no, no. That was that was the shadow mimic or the moon shadow mimic or something uh specific.

SPEAKER_01

I thought that was something else, but he was also a shadow mimic or theoretical.

SPEAKER_00

In the 11th floor, he was a disembodied spirit, which means he's anything.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So you don't see true, and technically you the last time you actually see him is in book seven, officially, that everybody's saying you see him when he hands off the bolt to Donut and leaves. So the theory goes that Mordecai went off to go join Audette and a shadow mimic took his place. A lot of people are saying like he's not as helpful in the latest book. I don't think he's not helpful, but I think his helpfulness has waned since book five, I would I would say.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, well, as he himself says in book eight, that y'all are now at a level pretty much beyond anything I ever did. So my helpfulness is going to be a limit, be limited. I never went this far.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Nobody ever went this far. On the other hand, if you're a shadow mimic trying to dissuade people from asking you too detailed questions, that would be a way to go. I personally as somebody who's frequently suppositions have been blasted out of the water by the eighth book, I gotta say, I don't think he's a shadow mimic. I think it would be difficult, if not impossible, for a shadow mimic to have slipped into a safe area and done that to him.

SPEAKER_00

Well, no, no, no. I I'm thinking he did it voluntarily. At least that's the way they're presenting it. Is that he went he won't be able to show off with Odette.

SPEAKER_01

But but Deniman's setting up the shadow mimics for being the bad guys.

SPEAKER_00

This is true.

SPEAKER_01

And I know you were mentioning that Oded as a goddess can go pretty much anywhere now.

SPEAKER_00

She should be able to.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, but they always get an announcement when a deity enters the realm. Good point. So if she did, they should know she's at least somewhere on the floor.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe they won't know where, but Well, unless you did like a last starfighter thing. You know, where um I can't remember the name, picks up uh Alex and they they fly off and he leaves the beta unit.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay, yeah. The in that aliens where he doesn't know it's there.

SPEAKER_00

He's like, Oh yeah, you know, I'll don't worry, I'll let Carl know and just leave the beta unit behind. Which maybe Audette has Yellow or something.

SPEAKER_01

It's been so long since I've seen that film. I I don't remember who that character was supposed to be. The alien who wearing. Centauri. Huh? Centauri.

SPEAKER_00

Was that his name? Yeah, Centauri. Oh, okay. Always trust Centauri.

SPEAKER_01

Not in Babylon 5.

SPEAKER_00

But no, it could be like that where she picks him up and, like, don't worry, I'll tell Carl, and just leaves a shadow mimic in his place. And maybe she has something going on with the shadow mimics, which leaves a lot of intrigue going on. How she could convince Mordecai to do it seems hard to believe because of his absolute animosity toward Chaco.

SPEAKER_01

And speaking of which, yeah, he was sure no matter how even though Chaco had his wings ripped off and was laying down bleeding, you know, he said, you know, I hope it hurts, you son of a bitch. You know, that just felt vintage mordecai there to me.

SPEAKER_00

This is true. This is that's totally true. And I'm not 100% sold on the theory, but it's interesting.

SPEAKER_01

It is interesting. It is it it would certainly explain why his form was kept time you know screwing up. Right.

SPEAKER_00

But it's trying to emulate something that it already is, or yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Though obviously it's what the AI is making him be rather than the normal changeling thing of touching, because I'm almost certain Mordecai never touched Rick Moranus.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, they probably just piped that one in.

SPEAKER_01

We need a Canadian, quick.

SPEAKER_00

Uh but the another theory that kind of follows along the same side is that Bucket Boy is the shadow mimic.

SPEAKER_01

Now that I could believe more, because that doesn't need to involve a debt.

SPEAKER_00

True. And he was a tag along with the strippers.

SPEAKER_01

So Right. So it'd be very easy for a shadow mimic impersonating a stripper to get close to Bucket Boy and switch him out.

SPEAKER_00

And that would give him the uh entrance into the safe room. Right. Which technically could lead back to the whole swapping out Mordecai. So I'm not gonna drag that back in.

SPEAKER_01

But if that were the case, then there wouldn't be a bucket boy there to on level 11, to have almost died from the second of the nine-tier attacks. That's true.

SPEAKER_00

Where he was also panicky. He's actually kind of always panicky about dying. Yes. Granted, he's he's his whole job at the strip club was to just run out with a bucket and pick up the coins and stuff that were thrown on the if they've mentioned it before, I've forgotten, but there was basically when you found out a bit more about the strippers, they were like all former mercenaries. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But they left the naughty boys to become strippers.

SPEAKER_00

Not all of them were naughty boys, but they were mercenaries.

SPEAKER_01

But they were all mercenaries, yeah. So was Bucket Boy a mercenary?

SPEAKER_00

I think he was, but he was a healer. He is a healer. Right. But he's like whole ability, he has healing abilities.

SPEAKER_01

Right, but it's not nearly as good as Amani.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, he's he's definitely not that level good, but he's he's kind of the backup person. Though he didn't do much healing during the um the war, the uh the faction war. Because I remember he was the one who was freaking out when Carl came in and killed the the worm the wormhead uh right in front of him because he was about to try to heal the wizard or the mage when they were taking over the mages at the base. Bucket boy doesn't okay, and this sounds like I don't like Bucket Boy. I like Bucket Boy, he's funny, but he doesn't do a ton in comparison to Mordecai who who does make potions and you know in general invests himself in a lot of stuff. Right. So I I would probably be more keen to believe that Bucket Boy is a shadow mage or a shadow, sorry, shadow mimic. Or, and this is a real big stretch, a war mage, that's why I had mage in my head. I don't Because a war mage could hide himself pretty well.

SPEAKER_01

I always got the impression that if a war mage took over somebody's skin or something, it looks pretty weird looking. I don't know. Although as a crocodilian, maybe it wouldn't look as weird, not as hangy. I mean, yeah, like a purse or a pair of boots. Ouch. So yeah, I I I think I could buy if anyone was gonna be a shadow mimic secretly, I think it bucket boy would make the most sense. It certainly couldn't be Samei. It couldn't be any of the slugalows. Um, I mean we the Well that's true, it could be because the changelings turned into the slugolos.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the changelings were doing that, and and there's like what, twelve left or fourteen or something? Twelve or fourteen.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe as many as twenty. I don't remember. It was just what was inside the truck that weren't caught on fire from the crease. From the chick chick sandwich. So my guesses have not exactly been very accurate on the whole, so I could be wrong, but I just I'd need more information before I could really believe it's Mordecai.

SPEAKER_00

I I I wouldn't be surprised, but it would be a little weird only because, like, why would he go with Audette? What would she say that could convince him to just like sure I'll ditch this and go to that? And technically he shouldn't be able to because he is Donuts manager.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like she would get a notification that your manager's left the floor. Or I would think so. Some kind of th something like that. Unless she's in on it too, and is hiding it, which she's done before with Sev, but yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's a little more mission critical.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, if is it? I mean, she literally destroyed a planetary system without Carl knowing about it.

SPEAKER_01

But that but that did not risk Carl's life immediately. Mordecai not being on hand, or and whoever replaces him screws up, could potentially put Carl's life in jeopardy.

SPEAKER_00

That could, but she she does really love Audette. She like seems to worship her for all that she is. She keeps I mean, granted, she does her glam thing. Right. Oh, I you know, I could worship you, Audet, and this, that, and the other.

SPEAKER_01

That was that was back, you know, when frankly, Donut was younger.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Well, and but she's also a champion of Necobed. So which is Audet's god. True. Not not a follower, but uh Right.

SPEAKER_01

But on the other hand, Necobet can smite her. But I just don't see what what would Odette say to Donut. She'd have to have some really convincing evidence, I think, especially after the faction wars, for her to to buy into that. Because I mean what, threats? We saw with uh Princess what it Yasmin, what was her name?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, the Carl's wife. Uh Carl's wife. I can't think of her name right now either.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I remember Princess Esquire.

SPEAKER_00

I was surprised she was alive by the time. I was too.

SPEAKER_01

I kind of expected Donut to get a fanbox with a new hat.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01

There's a specif suspicious resemblance.

SPEAKER_00

That's why I am not offering this.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm not offering. I'm certainly not offering five million more if someone could take this snake's head and make it into a hat I can wear. That was awesome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Love donut for all that she's worth. And she does scare me for all that she's worth. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I think that whole interaction just shows how much she's grown as a being.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, true. Do not screw with her. But that's the thing. I think it's possible if Audet got to her to get to Mordecai, and Mordecai agreed. I don't know. The thing that throws me off is I have no idea what she could possibly say.

SPEAKER_01

I don't either. Doesn't mean Denniman can't think of something, but I just can't imagine after all their history that anything she would say would A convince Mordecai to go with her and B, convince Donut to sh be quiet about it.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, absolutely. So that it's a Well, I could see her being quiet because she is she is sneakier than I have ever given her credit for. She acts overt about everything, but she is way sneaky about stuff.

SPEAKER_01

If she thinks it's necessary, yes. To me, that's the clicker though. What could be so necessary that she would keep this from everyone in her party? From Amani. From Carl, from well, of course Katya's gone. Otherwise, that would have been the censure's like from Katya? Come on.

SPEAKER_00

Well, but we don't know that she hasn't shared it with them, just not with Carl. Because Carl's definitely not gonna agree to anything that Odette says. He doesn't trust her.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_00

At least not not like he used to.

SPEAKER_01

No. Well, especially since she's she entered the Ascension battle. Yeah. So that's gonna be interesting to play. But no. Yeah, that's that's my take on it. We'll we'll see. I don't want to swear to anything, but that just No, you can't be afraid of that.

SPEAKER_00

This book is designed to go roller coaster style. It's always gonna go left-hand turns.

SPEAKER_01

But Corbett, we can't always guess it. And why can't we guess it?

SPEAKER_00

Because we all have our limitations.

SPEAKER_01

And they will not break our plot line. No matter how hard they try.
