"Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road?" The burning was there the whole time — before the recognition, before the breaking of the bread. That feeling you couldn't name? It had a name all along.

That feeling you couldn't name it, it had a name all along. Good morning, this is Northward, the Word of the North, your week a daily podcast from St. John's Fort Smith in collaboration with the Anglican family. I'm your host, Father Aaron. At the very end of the Emmaus story, after Jesus has finally been revealed to the two disciples, they say something very interesting. Luke 24, verse 32. Did not our hearts burn within us while he walked to us on the road while he opened to us the scriptures? The burning was there the whole time, on the road, before the recognition, before the breaking of the bread, before they understood anything. The burning was him. Have you ever had a burning you couldn't explain? A moment of reaching out that you almost didn't understand yourself? That person who slows down in the snowstorm to pray, even though they've never been to church, that's Cleopus. That person whose marriage hits a bump and called a priest of 11 at night, not because they were sure they believed, but because something in them knew to call. That's Cleopus. And the person sitting wherever you're listening to from right now, who came to church last Sunday, but isn't quite sure why, who hasn't felt God in months, maybe even in years, who's simply going through the motions, who drove to church on a road, not fully focused, something blurry, something off. That's Cleopus. That feeling of being alone, that feeling that no one values you, that you're not worthy, it's a call to fullness and fulfillment. It's a call to Jesus, who loves you not because of what you do, but because of who he is. That moment where you felt so lost, but there was something in you burning, that was Jesus on the road. Already there before you recognized him. Sit with that for a second. What in your life right now might be a burning you haven't recognized yet? He is already here, and the burning is him.
