Hello everyone, and welcome back to Kid for Freedom, the podcast where kids and families can learn what's happening around our country in a fun and easy to understand way. I'm your host, and I'm excited you're here. Every week we break down the biggest news stories, talk about sports, learn something new, and finish with a Bible verse to encourage us. Our goal is simple: help you understand what's happening in America while encouraging you to think carefully, ask questions, and treat others with kindness and respect. Today we've got a packed episode. We'll cover what's happening in Washington, DC, the latest on the economy, housing prices and why buying a home is still difficult, the FIFA World Cup, some good news from around the America, our Bible verse of the weeks, and fun trivia and jokes. Let's jump into today's headlines. Headline one, Washington continues budget talks. One of the biggest stories over the last few weeks has been the federal budget. Think of the government budget like a family budget. Families have to decide how much money they spend on groceries, clothes, vacations, and paying bills. The government has to do something similar, but on a much bigger scale. Members of Congress are discussing how much money they should that should be spent on things like national defense, border security, roads and bridges, education, health care, scientific research, and other government programs. These discussions can take a long time because people have different ideas about what should be the biggest priorities. Many conservatives believe the federal government should spend less money overall, reduce the national debt, strengthen border security, and give states more control over many issues. Others argue that maintaining or increasing funding for certain federal programs is important. These are different viewpoints that voters and lawmakers continue to debate. No matter what side someone is on, it's important for leaders to work together respectfully and make decisions they believe will help the country. Headline two campaign season is heating up. The 2026 midterm elections are getting closer. Across the country, candidates are beginning to campaign for seats in Congress, governor's office, and other states in local positions. Campaigning means candidates travel, give speeches, participate in debates, and explain what they hope to do if they're elected. One of the greatest things about America is that citizens get to vote for their leaders. Elections allow people to peacefully choose who represents them. A healthy democracy depends on informed voters who learn about the issues before making a decision. Headline three, the economy. You've probably noticed that some things still cost more than they used to. Groceries, fast food, cars, even some toys. That's because inflation has made many prices rise over the last several years. Inflation means the same amount of money doesn't buy as much as it used to. For example, maybe your favorite candy bar used to cost one dollar. Now it costs nearly two dollars. The candy bar didn't even get twice as good, but it became more expensive. Many Americans are hoping inflation continues to slow down so families can stretch their budgets further. Conservative leaders often argue that keeping the government spending under control, encouraging businesses to grow, and lowering unnecessary regulations can help strengthen the economy. Others believe different government policies are more effective. Economists continue to debate the best approaches. Headline four Houses are still expensive. Buying a house remains difficult for many families. Even though fewer homes are being sold than in previous years, the average home price has stayed very high. Why? There still aren't enough homes available in many parts of the country compared with the number of people who want to buy them. That means prices remain high. Many young families are saving longer before buying their first home. Experts continue watching interest rates because they affect how much people pay each month on a mortgage. Why does this matter? Sometimes kids wonder, why should I care about government or the economy? Here's why. The decisions made today can affect families, schools, businesses, and communities for years to come. Learning about current events helps us become more informed citizens who can make wise decisions when we're older. Even if you don't understand every detail yet, asking questions and learning is a great habit. The FIFA World Cup. The biggest sporting event on the planet has been taking place this month. The 2026 FIFA World Cup. This year's tournament is extra special because it's being hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Millions of fans have traveled from around the world to cheer for their favorite teams, filling stadiums with excitement. If you never watched soccer before, the World Cup is held every four years and features national teams from across the globe. Many people consider it the biggest sports tournament in the world. The United States men's national team made it to the rounds of 16 before being eliminated by Belgium, while the team was disappointed to end its tournament there. Many fans were proud of the effort and sportsmanship they showed. Hosting the World Cup also brings visitors to American cities, such as helping local restaurants, hotels, and businesses welcome guests from around the world. One of the fun things about sports is that they bring people together, even when they come from different countries or speak different languages. Other sports around America. Even with the World Cup grabbing headlines, there has been plenty happening in other sports. Baseball season is in full swing. Get it? I think I've already told that joke before. Teams are battling for playoff positions, and fans across the country are enjoying summer evenings at the ballpark. In football, NFL teams are preparing for training camp. Players are getting ready for another season by practicing, staying in shape, and learning new plays. For young athletes listening today, remember this winning is exciting, but learning, working hard, and being a good teammate are even more important. Great athletes don't just practice their skills, they also practice honestly, humility, and perseverance. America and the world. The United States continues to work with the allies around the world on challenges involving security, trade, and diplomacy. Sometimes events happening thousands of miles away can affect Americans here at home. For example, conflicts in other parts of the world can influence fuel prices, shipping costs, and the prices of everyday goods. That's one reason leaders pay close attention to world events. Conservatives often emphasize maintaining a strong national defense, supporting allies while putting American interests first, and encouraging peace through strength. Others may favor different approaches to foreign policy. These are ongoing discussions in American policies. Good news around America. Now let's brighten things up with some encouraging stories. Across the country, communities continue helping one another through volunteer work. Churches have organized food drives, neighborhood groups have cleaned parks, students have raised money for their local charities. Firefighters, police officers, teachers, nurses, and countless volunteers continue serving their communities every single day. These acts of kindness don't always make the national headlines, but they make a real difference. Sometimes the biggest heroes aren't famous. They're the people quietly helping others. Science and technology. Technology keeps changing the way we live. Scientists and engineers across America are working on exciting projects involving artificial intelligence, medicine, clean energy, and space exploration. AI, or artificial intelligence, is becoming a bigger part of daily life. It can help people write, learn, create art, and solve problems. At the same time, many experts are discussing how to use AI responsibly so it benefits people while protecting privacy and jobs. This is a great reminder that every new invention comes with opportunities and responsibilities. Did you know? Here are a few fun facts about America. The United States has 50 states. The bald eagle has been a national symbol for over 200 years. More than 340 million people live in the United States. America's national parks protect millions of acres of forests, mountains, deserts, rivers, and wildlife. Whether you live in a big city, a small town, or out in the country, every community plays an important role in our nation. Looking ahead, coming up next, we'll talk about a Bible verse that encourages us to live with wisdom and integrity. Then we'll finish today's episode with trivia, jokes, and a few final thoughts. Bible verse of the week. This week's verse is Proverbs three five to six. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. What does that mean? Sometimes life is confusing. Maybe you're nervous about a test, a big game, making a new friend or figuring out what the right thing to do is. This verse reminds us that we don't have to figure everything out on our own. We can pray, read God's word, ask wise people for advice, and trust God is with us even when we don't know what's coming next. That doesn't mean life will always be easy, but it does mean God promises to guide those who seek Him. Here's a challenge for this week. Each morning before you start your day, pray something simple like Lord, help me honor you today. Help me be kind, honest, hardworking, and courageous. Even a short prayer can help you keep your focus on God. Character Corner. Today let's talk about responsibility. Responsibility means doing what you've been asked to, even when nobody is watching. That could mean finishing your homework, cleaning your room, practicing your instrument, being honest if you won't make a mistake, helping your family without complaining. Small acts of responsibility build trust. As you grow, those habits could help you become someone others can count on. Trivia time. Let's see how many you know. Question one. How many states are there in the United States? We just went over this, by the way. The answer is fifty. Question two. How often is the FIFA World Cup held? Every four years. Question three. What branch of government makes federal laws? This one is a little hard. The legislative branch, which includes the House of Representatives and the Senate. Question four. What is the highest mountain in the United States? I've been to this. Question five. Can you name all three branches of the federal government? One. Two. And three. Okay. Did you get it right? They are legislative, executive, judicial. Oh wait, executive and judicial. Great job if you got those right. Joke time, ready to laugh. Why did the math book look sad? Because it had too many problems. Why don't eggs tell jokes? Because they'd crack each other up. Why did this soccer player bring string to the game? Because you wanted to tie the score. Hopefully those made you smile. Thought of the week. Here's something to remember. Being a good citizen doesn't start when you turn 18. It starts today. You can practice honesty, you can respect your parents and teachers, you can work hard in school, you can help your neighbors, you can pray for your country and for its leaders, even when you don't agree with every decision they make. People across America have different opinions about many issues. One important value in our country is treating others respectfully while discussing those differences. No matter what career God calls you to someday, a teacher, engineer, firefighter, farmer, nurse, business owner, scientist, soldier, or something else, you can make positive a positive difference by serving others with integrity.
