Welcome to the Daily Catholic Deep Dive. If you were first time here, we're here to connect the dots between the Bible, the Catechism, and your daily life. Every day we go over the daily Mass readings, Father Mike Schmidt's Bible in a year and Catechism in a year, plus other popular Catholic podcasts and videos released today we find interesting. If you feel a bit overwhelmed by all the daily Catholic listening, don't worry. We are here to find that one golden thread that ties it all together. Let's dive in. Today is Saturday, May 23rd, 2026.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and we have a really great um a great menu lined up for you today. We're covering the usual daily mass readings, day 143 of both Bible and catechism in a year, and some incredible specials. Right. Those include uh reflections from Dr. Tim Gray and Father Burkmasters, plus this fascinating Ascension Presents video where Father Gregory Pine sits down with comedian Shane Smith.

SPEAKER_01

Today we are looking at, well, the ultimate trap, really, the What About Him syndrome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is a big one.

SPEAKER_01

It's the one thing that derailed the wisest king in history. But surprisingly, it's also the exact thing a heavily tattooed comedian had to overcome.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, just to find his faith.

SPEAKER_00

It is a trap as old as time. I mean, if you look at the gospel today from John chapter 21, verses 20 to 25, we literally see Peter fall right into it.

SPEAKER_01

Right. Because Jesus has just told Peter how he's going to die.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. And Peter immediately points at John and just asks, Lord, what about him?

SPEAKER_01

And Jesus basically says, What concern is it of yours, you follow me?

SPEAKER_00

It's so blunt.

SPEAKER_01

It's so blunt, but so necessary. Father Burke Bansers pointed out in his reflection today that uh comparing always leads to despairing.

SPEAKER_00

Comparing leads to despairing. Wow.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's crazy how looking at someone else's path just ruins your own. It's like um it's like staring at another driver's GPS while you're on the highway. You're gonna crash your own car.

SPEAKER_00

That is the absolute perfect way to look at it. Because if you want to see someone keeping their eyes on their own road, look at Paul in today's first reading from Acts.

SPEAKER_01

Acts chapter 28, right. Verses 16 to 20 and 30 to 31.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Paul is literally under house arrest in Rome. He's, you know, chained to a gu.

SPEAKER_01

Which is wild. He could have so easily looked at the other apostles and just complained that his path was too hard.

SPEAKER_00

But he doesn't. He preaches boldly right where he is. Dr. Tim Gray unpacks this perfectly when discussing today's responsorial psalm, which is Psalm 11, verses 4, 5, and 7, and also the Alleluia from John 16, verses 7 and 13.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, what exactly does he say?

SPEAKER_00

Well, he notes that God, from his heavenly throne, searches for the just. And being just isn't about having the easiest path. It's about actively living out God's truth in the specific, um, sometimes really messy circumstances of your own life.

SPEAKER_01

Aaron Ross Powell Rather than obsessing over what others are doing. Right. So Paul stays in his lane despite being chained to a Roman guard. But um what happens when you have total freedom, immense power, and the greatest mind on earth, and you still drift into oncoming traffic?

SPEAKER_00

Well, you get Solomon.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

On day 143 of Bible in a year, we're reading 1 Kings 1, 2 Chronicles 1, and Psalm 43. Solomon famously asks God for wisdom.

SPEAKER_01

And God grants it.

SPEAKER_00

He does. But almost immediately, Solomon fails in his obedience. He starts importing horses from Egypt.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, let me just stop you there. Solomon was literally granted divine wisdom. How does the wisest guy on earth miss something as basic as obedience? Like, what's so bad about importing a few horses?

SPEAKER_00

Well, because it's never just about the horses. God explicitly commanded the kings of Israel not to return to Egypt and not to build up vast cavalry.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, because Egypt represented their past slavery.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And relying on horses meant relying on military might instead of, you know, trusting God's protection. Solomon looked left and right at the powerful pagan nations around him.

SPEAKER_01

Staring at their GPS.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. And he decided he needed what they had to be secure. Father Mike Schmitz points out the heartbreaking reality here. You can be incredibly wise, but still refuse to be obedient.

SPEAKER_01

Wow. Which perfectly connects the Old Testament failure to our New Testament calling.

SPEAKER_00

It really does.

SPEAKER_01

And it ties right into catechism in a year, also on day 143, covering paragraphs 1051 to 1065. Father Mike goes over our particular judgment and focuses on the word Amen.

SPEAKER_00

He explains that amen doesn't just mean I agree, right?

SPEAKER_01

It means I stake my life on it.

SPEAKER_00

I stake my life on it. Solomon wouldn't stake his life on God, he staked it on Egyptian horses.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But if you want to see what a radical amen looks like today, we really have to talk about Shane Smith.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, in that Ascension Presents video, Shane shares how he went from running with people associated with Satanism to becoming Catholic.

SPEAKER_00

All after profound vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

SPEAKER_01

But the real miracle is what happened after that. Shane is a stand-up comedian. To say his amen and stake his life on his faith, he started bringing completely clean comedy into incredibly hostile, secular comedy clubs.

SPEAKER_00

Which is basically career suicide in that industry.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, totally. He lost tens of thousands of followers overnight. But he did it anyway, radically obeying his unique calling instead of, you know, just conforming to the industry standard.

SPEAKER_00

So the golden thread today is the obedience of your amen. It's about ignoring the noise, stopping the comparisons, and walking the specific path God has laid out for you today.

SPEAKER_01

Before we go, think about this for a second. If your amen means staking your life on it, what is the safety net you are still holding on to today? Oh, that's a great question. Because if Solomon's Egyptian horses taught us anything, it's that your backup plan might be the very thing that derails your calling.

SPEAKER_00

A truly powerful thought to carry with us.

That's our deep dive for today. We hope this helped you see the big picture. If you enjoyed the content, please remember to subscribe to the show or support our mission in the link in the description. God bless.
