Jase discusses his first turkey kill! Special guest "Rooster" joins us!

God bless you!

SPEAKER_03

So what were y'all talking about?

SPEAKER_05

So we were talking about why did we bring Stevie? And like I remember because Poppy J brought Stevie so we didn't have to go back to the house when we had more hunting time. Oh because I had my soccer game remember.

SPEAKER_03

So is that the day that you uh is that the day that you got your turkey? Or the is it was that the next day? What are you talking about? That was the day we got the turkey.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, the day we got the turkey.

SPEAKER_03

Gotcha. Well, uh, go ahead and run us through that, Jace.

SPEAKER_05

What?

SPEAKER_03

Go ahead and run us through that. So you know, tell the story?

SPEAKER_05

Oh wait, we're starting already? When did we start?

SPEAKER_03

We've been starting for uh about a minute.

SPEAKER_05

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_03

Well So how are you gonna how you gonna start this out?

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

Welcome everybody. Thank you for joining us today in another episode of the Just Hunting with Jace podcast. And today we're gonna talk about my first turkey.

SPEAKER_03

So you bagged you a uh pretty good turkey. Um go ahead and set it up for us. Okay, tell you know, where you were, what were you doing the night before, all that stuff. You wanna run us through it?

SPEAKER_05

So the night before we were like scouting, I think, or going like home or to your place.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, we rode around a little bit.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and also Brewster is my grandpa, so you may hear me call him Poppy J, and I call him Poppy J because his um his name starts with a J, which is Jason, and I'm named after him. Um yeah, so we were like the day before we were um scouting, I guess. Um heading over to Buck um Rooster's place, and we like stopped by the place that I we were gonna hunt. We saw a couple of hens. I was like, yeah, that's a good spot. Then we went to your place, we hang out for a little bit, and then we went to bed. Woke up at five. I know, it's crazy. We woke up at five, we got ready, we were out and we were driving at 5 30, and we were probably out in the woods like 5 40?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, probably 5 45.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. Yeah, we were like out at that time.

SPEAKER_03

So wait a minute. Um, when you so how did you feel right before you went to bed the night before?

SPEAKER_05

I feel like we were I felt I was like, I think we have a good really good chance because the turkeys haven't been hunted before. And y'all are gonna hear me say a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Did you see any turkeys when you when you guys scouted the night before?

SPEAKER_05

I said we saw two hens.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, two hens.

SPEAKER_04

But it wasn't at that place, no. We we were riding around the night before and trying to get a game plan, and like you said, one of our best hunting spots, it's got a lot of turkeys. Unfortunately, this year has too many hunters, and so these turkeys are being hunted a lot, and you know, sometimes when turkeys get hunted a lot, they they don't they're not as got you know, they're not as um, they don't talk as much. They figure out everybody's calls, they fill out um they figure out everybody's spots, they figure out where um their um setups, they just like so this place where Jace got his turkey, nobody had hunted it all year.

SPEAKER_05

Because this is our land, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

This is our place, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

A land where somebody lets out a lot of other hunters hunt it. But like we were hunting there and Stevie is a dog. She's a dog that we've had for three years. And well roosters had. Um we brought her because I had a soccer game that day, and we wanted to conserve as much hunting time as we could can. And so we were like, let's take Stevie so we don't have to go back to the house and then leave so we could conserve hunting time and stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Gotcha. So you you okay, so you were you're trying to conserve energy and get ready for the the hunt the next morning, right?

SPEAKER_04

So actually it was I'm sorry to interrupt you, but it was conserved time because we what we had to do if we didn't take Stevie with us, it would cut our hunting time short because we'd have to take Stevie home and then go to the soccer game. So we took Stevie with us in case we got into something, then we had to, you know, to use all the time we had, we could keep hunting as long as we could and not have to leave and take Stevie home. Yeah. Gotcha. Okay, gotcha. So Stevie was in the truck.

SPEAKER_03

She stayed in the truck. Okay, gotcha. Okay, so so you are getting ready to lay your your uh lay your head down. You're getting ready to lay your head down at night. What's going through your head when you're when your head hits that pillow?

SPEAKER_05

I'm like, what's gonna happen? No. I'm kind of like, once my head hits the pillow, I'm not like that. I'm just like um I like stay calm and I'm just like, I just hit the sack.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, okay, so you just you hit the sack. Um you wake up, how you feeling? Right when you wake up, are you just immediately ready to go?

SPEAKER_05

Um, we get we get ready pretty quick.

SPEAKER_04

He gets up immediately. Yes. He jumps up immediately.

SPEAKER_05

That's the only thing I get up for. That's the only thing I get up for hours.

SPEAKER_04

Was this the morning you said happy birthday? I told you about.

SPEAKER_05

Happy birthday.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, when you woke up and like was still half asleep.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

So he gets up, he's still half asleep. So I say Jace's time to get up. He jumps up out of the bed. You know, he's kind of walking crossways and looking sideways and everything else, and he says, Happy birthday, happy birthday. And then between the bed and the living room, and when he finally got the living room, I think he woke up. So somewhere down the hallway, he's yelling out happy birthday. His birthday wasn't. It's nobody's birthday. That's the problem.

SPEAKER_05

I don't remember that.

SPEAKER_04

We'll just have to make somebody up. Yeah, look somebody up. Uh find somebody's birthdays today. Yeah, that day. Anyway, that was just a side funny.

SPEAKER_05

Some Chinese pick person.

SPEAKER_04

Sidebars funny.

SPEAKER_05

Some Chinese person.

SPEAKER_04

Anyway. Happy birthday.

SPEAKER_05

Happy birthday to y'all out there.

SPEAKER_03

So, okay, so you get in the truck, you're going down the road, you pull into the spot, you walk out, you you know, you make the trek up the hill, all that stuff. You get in your spot, you know, there's always a sense of like excitement when you get in that spot initially. What are you feeling like when you finally get to sit down in that spot?

SPEAKER_05

I'm actually really cautious.

SPEAKER_03

Why?

SPEAKER_05

That's a turkey spot, and if you and if you have turkey spots, there's coyotes here. And I don't know, but I just had this thing once. This was last year. I'm gonna I'm kinda I'm basically exposing myself to a bunch of random people out in the world, but I was was actually last year um Rooster went to set out the decoys and like he was like 20 yards in front of me. And then I heard footsteps behind me, but really I think it was squirrels. I heard footsteps behind me and it just freaked me out. So I was like, What's happening? Like I got up, I got up and I was like, I'm going to rooster because roosters, but then like the second decoy he sits out, he's behind me out in a field while I'm in the woods, and there's a bunch of sticks between us, like a pile of sticks between us. So like if something happened to me, there the sticks is gonna stop him.

SPEAKER_03

So I remember uh when you sorry, I hit a button there. I remember when you were having like you had weird night terrors there for a little bit. You were talking about coyotes and like, you know, I need help, the coyotes might get me or whatever. And I was like, what are you talking about? Bears. You know, yeah, bears, all that stuff.

SPEAKER_05

So but really I'm trying I'm actually getting through that fear, but the only thing I'm fearing about is I'm a sourner cubs. Never get between a sourner cubs.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, good little fun fact. So, okay, you sit down in your spot. How long okay? So, what was your first move? Did you get down and start calling? Yeah, did you see something? Did you hear something? Like, yeah, go ahead and walk us through that.

SPEAKER_05

So, what we did is we get down in our spot and we just go to sleep. Or we like close our eyes, give our eyes rest, and so you went to sleep during the turkey hunt? No, we didn't go to sleep. We actually rested our eyes, not actually like going to sleep, because then I would have slept through all the gobbles and everything. Um, we actually closed our eyes. Then we just heard a turkey gobble, and we were like, Alright, this is it.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Hold on. I think Jay's is getting up to uh get some chips or something. Oh, he's pulling out the old turkey gobble. Okay, the old shock gobbler. Go ahead and run that for us real quick on time.

SPEAKER_05

Right here, what I have is this turkey gobble call. And I actually used it a couple times yesterday and today while hunting turkeys. And what is today? Like May 2nd.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. Um, 2026. The day we make this, we'll talk about another hunt that we did today. But we actually I actually um you got this for me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And I got it at New Verse Sports, and that's what I've really wanted. And it's actually really cool. This is what it sounds like.

SPEAKER_03

Alright, so did you hear anything like that when you guys first sat down?

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

Really? Okay, so how did you like go ahead and walk me through this? I'm gonna set it up. You guys go ahead and tell the story. You you hear it, you're there, you know, you did the scouting, it you're ready to go. But you got the ball in your hands, baskets there, you just gotta you gotta set up a shot. What's going on?

SPEAKER_05

Okay. So I immediately hear a gobble and it's in front of us. So we know if the turkeys come towards us, they're gonna come in front of us. So boy, I asked Rooster, where do you think the turkeys are gonna come? And he said, the left. And oh, we'll get to that in a second, but like I got immediately got my gut gun out. But he was like, No, you can wait a second. I still had my gun because like anything can happen. We they start gobbling like one gobbles, then they start, they start like a whole entire happy birthday song. Maybe that's what I was saying, happy birthday too, one of the hens or gobblers. Happy birthday, yeah. And that they had a good gift. Um yeah, so maybe they were singing happy birthday, but they were they were shot goblin, they were double gobbling, they were just gobbling, they were even like cutting each other off with other gobbles. Like, there are four turkeys, and like Rooster said Rooster is like 55 years old. He is turkey hunted his whole life, and he hasn't heard turkeys ever gobble like that for a long time.

SPEAKER_03

It's been it's been a while, yeah. Yeah, good. Give us one. I mean, that's that's unbelievable.

SPEAKER_05

Um also what happened is this is not I don't think that's usual for this road because this road is like very out in the wild. And like I don't think this is usual, but they had like a whole they had an early party in the morning like going on, and like they had music busting, they had loud cars, they're like you're talking about like the road, like the road you were hunting. Yeah, like that is like we saw we saw a bear on that road once.

SPEAKER_04

Like it's very the neighbor's house. Um, yeah, they were they were partying, and they evidently partied all night or woke up real early and started partying. I don't know. But what Jason was referring to is they was playing loud music, and every once in a while you'd hear them turn it up, or the the gobblers would gobble at the music, believe it or not. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

What kind of music were they like learned, you know?

SPEAKER_05

Like the the song was like the song was it got real loud and then the turkeys gobbled to it, like they were singing along with it or something. Like one of them. One of them like, you know, Disney sing-ong video uh movies, like where it has a sing and then it has like you can follow the words.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Like it's like Moana or something like that. Like an a recre like it's a recreation, but like it has words so you can sing with it.

SPEAKER_01

I got you.

SPEAKER_05

But like they were but then a loud caller came and the turkey started gobbling to a the loud collar, like it was like what what car do you think it was?

SPEAKER_04

I I don't know, but they they were gobbling at anything and everything. I mean, it was quite like I said, it was quite incredible. I the I had experienced a few times in in my career that that they were you find that many gobblers gobbling that much together, and they were all together.

SPEAKER_05

I know, and it the crazy thing is, it was only four gobblers. So that's a crazy thing. Um so we were way in, it got daylight a little a little bit. We spotted a turkey in the roost, and it was a hen that was looking out at our setup. So we actually uh so I was like, oh crap. We were moving quite a bit, a little bit, because like but it uh it was a hen and we think it was a bearded one because we didn't hear any gobbler gobbles where the um bearded hen was explain our setup, what you what you wanted to do. Um, so I was like, these turkeys have never been hunted before. We should set out two hens and a jake. I bet the jake would get them mad, and I bet they would like to inspect some new um hens and turkeys.

SPEAKER_04

That's what we had. We had two uh two hen decoys and uh jake decoys what we had.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I really liked one of the hen decoys. I really liked it. It was really realistic. Um, so we were waiting, they came off of the roost. Ten minutes later, some coyotes started barking, right? Howling, yapping. It shut up the turkeys for like 15 minutes. You call back, we hear a gobble, and it's close. Now it was that gobble was like 60 yards away. So we were like oh crap four gobblers come out of the woods, and two of them spot the jakes, and they're just like bob like bobbing their heads, like looking at it, and like seeing what how big it is or whatever. We have one sh strutting, which is the one I shot. He was the dominant one, which has the widest head. He was strutting and he immediately saw that Jake. Like they were all coming out in a line. There was three, and uh, you said shoot the one in the back, and that was the dominant one. So I already had my gun on him, but then another one popped behind it, but I didn't care.

SPEAKER_04

He said shoot the white head.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Um he immediately saw the Jake decoy and he was it he immediately started shutting stopped shutting and he he moved to the very front of the line and he was like come at me, Jake. And I shot it, but he was like 25, 30 yards away, maybe.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So I shot at the breast just to make sure. And that turkey you said like he he was going down, but he was like pushing forward with like his head or breast or whatever, like with his legs. But like you could tell that I hit him because all the other turkeys they flew off and uh that one's just like he's down. Yeah, he's down. He's already dead, but he goes over there, he shoots him one more time just to make sure. He tr because he was heading towards this um brush pile in front of us, and we didn't want him get get away. So you shot him again, then you got ran over and jumped on it. And we were we were celebrating, and the funny thing was you were still sitting down, and I was already like halfway across the field. I was like, I got him! I got him that was a fuck that was a funny thing.

SPEAKER_03

That is awesome, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Um so yeah, we got to take pictures and stuff, and it was really cool. And so, Rooster, do you have any details to show or tell?

SPEAKER_04

Um, I think you did a really good job. I'm sitting here thinking, um, you know, going back again to the reason why we went hunting at this particular spot was we had hunted at the other's place probably four times before this day.

SPEAKER_05

This one was the first time. This is the first time they've like ever seen a hint.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so so you know, with with any type of hunting, but you know, for sure with turkey hunting, um you know, you you make adjustments and changes throughout the season to make you know to give you your best opportunity. We actually had more birds at the other place, but unfortunately we had a couple more hunters in there this year than we've had in the past. So we uh, you know, I think these turkeys had seen a few people and had seen some vehicles coming and going, had seen uh had heard different calls. So we just weren't having, you know, we were hearing gobbles on the roost. Uh we would see, you know, when they come off the the roost, they most of the time they were getting quiet. So it just we just wasn't connecting. So uh this place where we went where Jace killed it, I had hunted there one day by myself during the week when Jace was in school, and I mean I was trying to get a turkey, um, but it just didn't work out for me.

SPEAKER_05

So he moved to a different spot, and you did get a turkey with an 11-inch beer.

SPEAKER_04

But uh but yeah, it was uh so that's why we ended up going where we went. And so, you know, like I said, Jace uh he's he's stuck with it all season and uh like I said, learning and and seeing how we change things and make adjustments to try to make things happen.

SPEAKER_05

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

I so real quick, not to interrupt, but uh we got a special guest that just walked in. What do you think about what do you think about Jason's? What do you think about Jason's turkey?

SPEAKER_00

I'm very, very proud of him. He's worked really hard and it's well deserved. And I'm proud of him that it wasn't just let me check this off the list to get it done. He's really shown in the past year, and y'all have probably talked about this, but really shown like passion, drive, hard work. I've been very, very proud of him and his his skills, how he's been learning, how he's been applying what he learns, and just continuing to want to grow. And not just, oh, I've killed a big buck, I've got a turkey, now I'm done. He wants to, if anything, it's just added fuel to the fire.

SPEAKER_04

Well, and and your mom has uh one turkey killed that we need to interview her sometime about. Um, I was with her when she got that one. That was cool. But um, but also I just throw in there too, while all this was going on, as far as to to brag on Jace a little bit, the the turkeys were still on the roost, they hadn't come off the roost yet. And and he looks over at me and he says, Poppy, look at the sunrise. And he said it's got purple and orange and blue and all these colors.

SPEAKER_05

But it was it was let's say blue, pink, no, blue, purple, pink, orange, pink, blue, pink.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. So again, he he just looked over at me and said that. So uh we hadn't even talked about it, so he came up with that. So the point being you enjoyed the whole uh alay it, not just killing something. Yeah, enjoying the whole experience. The whole experience, there.

SPEAKER_05

Alright, so do you want to get to the story?

SPEAKER_03

Hold on before we go before we go any farther. Okay, so you got the turkey, you put it on the back of the truck, you brought it to the house. I saw it. We put it in the freezer. We we actually cooked some of the turkey. We took the cooked the turkey. I trimmed it up a little bit, cleaned it, put it in the crock pot. It was pretty good. It was real good.

SPEAKER_04

I got to eat some up the next day. It was awesome. It was good.

SPEAKER_05

I know the funny thing was I went to soccer with blood stains on my um jersey.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and that was funny because the team, the team was like, man, he's got blood on him. And then one of the kids was like, Man, he went turkey hunting. So he and I guess they assumed that you went turkey hunting in your soccer jersey.

SPEAKER_05

I know they were like, Why'd you go? I mean, that wouldn't have worked anyway because it's like too bright and stuff. And turkeys also see more colors than we do.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, another funny thing about it was we came up with the Stevie turkey, which was like I said, this is your first turkey ever. But we were debating on whether to call it the Stevie Turk turkey or the Crocs turkey, because he was wearing Crocs when he shot this.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, his camo crocs. Yes.

SPEAKER_05

I've worn them so much they tore a little bit.

SPEAKER_03

Well, they do got like the fuzzy in them, so they probably do keep your feet warm and comfortable, huh?

SPEAKER_05

Um, they do, but like I forgot my boots.

SPEAKER_04

Um even though we have we are calling this the Stevie turkey, we we we think this might be a fluke though, because Nick, we've hunted twice since then, and we have taken Stevie with us, but nothing happened.

SPEAKER_05

So we got really close.

SPEAKER_04

We got really close, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Um I I think Steve Stevie's good luck, really.

SPEAKER_04

So you're still okay with Steve?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah. Because she's good luck, like that's the first time we ever took her hunting. And we killed something our left. Okay, so before we get to the next story, let me share a joke. All right.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah, whip us up some, dude. What do you got?

SPEAKER_05

Okay, um, let me see. Let me find it. Um, okay. Um, I can't find it. I know where it is. Let me look.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'll so why don't we um you want to wait until the next podcast to do the next story? Why don't we do that? We'll just sum up some summarize some stuff.

SPEAKER_05

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we could um so Jace has a has a couple of good stories, but we do want to break them up and then like piece them together so people would be able to find exactly the exact story instead of going through one episode and trying to find all the stories. But but wait, did you find a joke?

SPEAKER_05

Yes, I found it.

SPEAKER_03

All right, what do you got?

SPEAKER_05

All right. Turkey hunting is the most relaxing time of the year, completely stress free. Three, um, free. Ethan, age 22.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and if you if you look at the picture that he shared, so again, uh in in the picture, the quote, it there's a there's a saying here in the quote. I suppose it says, quote, turkey hunting is the most relaxing time of the year, completely stress-free, unquote. Ethan, age 22. And the guy in the picture is like 85. So that's the joke. I might actually try to make that the cover photo. Yeah. Really? That is hilarious.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it does drive you crazy. So, Jace, like what? I'll ask you a question real quick. We'll finish this up. You you deer hunted several few years now. Got some, got some deer.

SPEAKER_04

Three years. You've uh, yeah, three deer and three years. You've uh you've turkey hunted a few years, and you finally got your first one. So I don't I don't think it's really, you know, what what was the turkey hunt harvest like what you thought it would be? Was it like up there as far as a your your experience and your your thrill of the hunt, so speak?

SPEAKER_05

What do you mean by that?

SPEAKER_04

I mean, was it did you ever like expect or think about what it would be like to get a turkey? And then when you did, was it the was it?

SPEAKER_05

I watched a lot of Kindle Gray videos, which shout out to him because he's a great YouTuber. Um uh I watched a lot of them videos and I was actually planning on jumping on the turkey myself, but then you ran in front of me and jumped on it, but okay.

SPEAKER_04

So it was it was good. You do it again.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I'm gonna do it again. Okay, but that time I'm gonna jump on it.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, you're gonna jump on it. Good. Well, let me um let me tell you this, Chase. So um what do you call a uh what do you call a running turkey?

SPEAKER_05

Huh. Well, is this a joke?

SPEAKER_03

What do you call a running turkey?

SPEAKER_05

A running turkey. Well, let me think. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Fast food.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I've got one for all the Virginia Tech people. Oh, here we go. This is my favorite. Do you know how to make Virginia Tech cookies? Virginia Tech Hokie cookies or football cookies.

SPEAKER_03

So how do you make so okay, how how do you make Virginia, how do you make Virginia Tech football cookies? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Put them in a bowl and beat them for Oh man.

SPEAKER_03

Good old Virginia Tech humor. Yeah, I freaking, I can't stand them.

SPEAKER_04

Oh that's probably big old UVA wow. Yeah. Don't lose.

SPEAKER_03

Um, Jace, I'll give you one more. Um if you cross a turkey with some corn and veggies, what do you get?

SPEAKER_05

Hmm. Corn and veggies. So if you cross it like if you cross it, like you can mix it together.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, mix it together, what do you get?

SPEAKER_05

So mutate it.

SPEAKER_03

I guess.

SPEAKER_05

Um Thanksgiving.

SPEAKER_03

That's it. All right. Well, Jace, we will leave it there. Um, and hey, I would do want to remind people, you're you've read a some series of books, a lot of hunting books, a lot of survival books. We are going to, alongside the the the um the little special episodes, we're gonna start doing uh Jace's gonna do some book reviews. So we're gonna do book review episodes. We'll I'll label those on here. So if people want to check out some of the books that you read, and then uh that'll give you a chance to talk about it, maybe stir some interest for those books. They're really good books. Uh you you read a whole series on hunting, right? It was like what was it called?

SPEAKER_05

I'm starting on the fishing series of Lane Walker. Yes, Lane Walker. Today I got this. I survived the Attack of the Grizzlies 1967. I survived book.

SPEAKER_03

These are based on, these are like real stories. Yeah, these are based on real stories. Yep.

SPEAKER_05

So like um it's the graphic novel version. I'm also reading. I also finished the normal version. Like the original version. They're really good books. They're really good. Um the I survived one has a lot of um survival tips and it um does it has lots of lessons and um things that actually like happened because of so all the people that littered out there get out of here because if you littered in 1967, you made the grizzlies go wild and um in Montana and kill two girls in one night.

SPEAKER_03

We will uh and that's just a sneak peek of some of the things that Jace is talking about in these little series. So, but with that, it's just a sneak preview. Jace flattened out his first turkey. He was very thankful for it, uh, you know, did it the right way, was able to put food on the table for his family, and uh he had some laughs and shared some good experience. Jace, anything else you want to say?

SPEAKER_05

Um, the only thing I want to say is I want Kindle Gray to post a turkey hunt video, and not only thing I want to say is get out there and start turkey hunt.

SPEAKER_03

All right, with that we'll leave, we'll leave it there. Thank you guys for joining us. We will be back next time. See ya.

SPEAKER_05

See ya.
