This week on Slasher Bash, it is Madisen's first time watching the iconic, cult classic Evil Dead 2 by Sam Raimi. Does the film resonate with a first time watcher in 2026?
Let's do this, bitch.
SPEAKER_00You're late to our meeting.
SPEAKER_01I am. I'm not gonna let that slide.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01It'd be easier to do it.
SPEAKER_00It's an hour late. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, an hour. Like. Well, somebody doesn't know time zone math. Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_00It's me.
unknownThat's me.
SPEAKER_00But you were the one who said eight. I am. And I just did the math conversion wrong.
SPEAKER_01And you scheduled us for nine, and I'm here at nine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, true.
SPEAKER_01So equal, equally guilty parties.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we met in the middle on that one. I I had a feeling that would happen too, because when I when I did it, I was like, is that right? Uh whatever. I'll fix it later.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Then it's not. I know.
SPEAKER_01That's like what I figured. I saw it and I was like, does he is he meaning eight?
unknownWhatever.
SPEAKER_00Well, because then you didn't text me, so I was like, it must be right. I figured you'd be like, you know, you'd be like, that's nine, not eight. Anyway. It worked. We're here. Yeah. You did like 30,000 steps yesterday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I was beat.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was beat.
SPEAKER_00You bartend?
SPEAKER_01I do.
SPEAKER_00What's the bar like?
SPEAKER_01Uh so Westward Journal is like Denver's like local, all the hot spot things. And uh Westward voted us best bar food in Denver.
SPEAKER_00It's called Oh, in all of Denver.
SPEAKER_01Yep. It's called Mestizo Brew Cantina. We brew all our own beers. Wait, what's it called? Say that again. Mestizo brew cantina. What does that mean? Mestizo is like uh mixed blood. So like our owner is half Polish and half Mexican.
SPEAKER_02Cool.
SPEAKER_01So when we opened, we had more like like some like Polish-inspired dishes and I was saying you got a lot of sausages. No sausages, but we have a sausage hot dog or sausage taco.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Do you really?
SPEAKER_01No. Um that'd be cool.
SPEAKER_00You should do that.
SPEAKER_01Well, now we just do tacos because like the thing is like it's in a um used to be like an oil change place, and they took it over, so like like the we can open up the garage doors and be indoor-outdoor, but it's a small space, so all the cooking is on a food truck. So to keep shit moving, they had to like way cut back on the menu and like just focus on like tacos, but the tacos are bomb. I've eaten there every week for three years, and I still think you should do a burrito that's hot dogs inside the burrito. A hot dog burrito? Well, the owners are from Chicago. The owners are from Chicago, so we're thinking having like a secret Monday night menu where we do uh Chicago Chicago dogs and wet beef.
SPEAKER_00That'd be awesome. Yeah. You love wet beef.
SPEAKER_01I do. We also serve.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, what's up, everybody? Welcome to Slasher Bash, the podcast. The podcast where we talk about horror movies between two friends. This is gonna be different every time. I'm your host. I'm one of your hosts, Benjamin, with my co-host Madison.
SPEAKER_01Madison. Sorry, I'll stop talking over you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's so rude. And we're here to talk about one of my favorite movies, Evil Dead 2. They dropped the the in this.
SPEAKER_01Isn't uh like doesn't it have like a subtitle Dead by Dawn?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I you know, I don't really know the thing about the subtitle. I remember I bought the DVD and it was like the Dead by Dawn edition. Because it all these bonus features and shit like that. Like, I don't know, is that the actual subtitle? It's not a good idea. I think it is.
SPEAKER_01It was very small, like on the cover foot image of on the thumbnail, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but in the movie it just says Evil Dead 2. At least the version I watched.
SPEAKER_01Interesting. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Let it let us know. Is it Evil Dead 2 or is it Evil Dead 2 Dead by Dawn? You can let us know on our Instagram, which is that's a great transition.
SPEAKER_00You don't even know it? You should I know it by heart now.
SPEAKER_01Slasher bash underscore podcast.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's podcast, not just pod. You even know. No, I did not. Let us know. Um, what was I gonna say? Oh, did you watch this on your phone?
SPEAKER_01No, I did not. I was curled up in the living room with my wife. I said this was your favorite. So we like got the popcorn, snuggled up on the couch. She didn't think she had seen it. No, what really enjoyed it actually. Um Chloe didn't think she'd seen it. And then when she's like, Wait, doesn't his girlfriend come back and do a dance? And then we saw the scene and we're like, Yep, you saw it.
SPEAKER_00It's one of those movies, it kind of blends in with the first one in in some weird ways. You're like, is this from the first one or the second one? I don't remember. It does. And then yeah.
SPEAKER_01You're gonna give us the stats?
SPEAKER_00Dude, I got so much stuff to talk about. I I thought I do because I love this movie. I I did extra credit work here. Nice. This movie came out in 1987, directed by Sam Raimi. Was co-written by by with Sam Raimi by uh Scott Spiegel, who plays the overalls guy in the movie. He's in the overalls.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Like the guy missing his teeth.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the hick guy or whatever. Yeah. Nice. Um I have a bunch of cool little behind-the-scenes stuff here I thought would be worth saying, and maybe we can comment on. But uh he made this movie after his movie Crime Wave came out, which he had like one of the worst experiences of his life, Sam Raimi. Yep. Um, because uh they changed they did a bunch of like last-minute changes with the cast and like they edited it without his permission and stuff like that. But that movie was co-written with the Cohen brothers, um, and it was just the bomb of a movie. Like it didn't make any money and it got horrible reviews.
SPEAKER_01I was reading that because of that, he set the production of this one like far enough away that the producers couldn't like just easily like come to set every day and and fuck with his movie.
SPEAKER_00That's genius. Yeah, that's genius. Um he wanted to make the sequel be take place in the Middle Ages and have time travel involved with Ash. That did not happen for this movie. Well, but it does happen for the next movie. Uh it sort of happens for this one. Yeah, I guess you're right. Um Stephen King is a big part of why this movie got made. He they were having trouble financing the movie, and they had dinner with Stephen King, and they talked about that, and he made a call to the producer, and they gave him the money he needed to make the movie, which is really cool.
SPEAKER_01Um is there anything that gets made? I was thinking about this. I'm also reading The Shining right now. Um but there's like every fucking movie you watch, you're like, oh, Stephen and King influence there. Like I'm watching Widow's Bay right now. So good, dude. Influences. Oh, we should cover that. Just did the first episode.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I can't wait for you to get farther. It's so fucking I just finished it.
SPEAKER_01Like, is there any horror now that's not in some way influenced by Stephen King?
SPEAKER_00Hmm. That's I don't know, because I also feel like a lot of like old movies are also influenced by Stephen King. So those movies that were influenced by Stephen King, those movies themselves influenced other people. Who don't even realize they're being influenced by the thing. He's like such a horror. I feel like especially when it's supernatural. I know not all of his stuff is supernatural, but like when I think of all of the mod even Widows Bay is super Stephen King. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Or like the entire ending of Stranger Things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, all of Stranger Things, really.
SPEAKER_01Which is just announced as a house at Halloween Horror Nights.
SPEAKER_00Oh, nice. Yeah. We'll be there.
SPEAKER_01Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um The other person though I think doesn't get enough credit is is John Carpenter. Maybe maybe he was influenced by Stephen King as well, but um he does a lot of the small town horror stuff too.
SPEAKER_01These are more like slashers, though, aren't they? Oh, he did the fog?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. The original fog was uh John Carpenter.
SPEAKER_01So Carpenter was the fog and Stephen King is the mist.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That's confusing.
SPEAKER_00What's the difference between fog and mist?
SPEAKER_01Let's get back on track. So King helped get this movie made.
SPEAKER_00I have some other fun uh facts here, but maybe we'll we'll bring those up as we're going through it. I do think one really cool fun fact is that this movie was written in Sam Raimi's house in Silver Lake. I don't know if you saw this. And he was living with at the same time the Cohen brothers, Frances McDormant, Kathy Bates, and Holly Hunter.
SPEAKER_01I did see they were all living together, and he wanted Holly Hunter for the main female character Billy Joe in studios where like she's not hot enough.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. She is though. Yeah. Holly Hunter. She's pretty hot. She's sexy. Um what a cat group of roommates, man. Could you imagine that? That's insane to me. I read that, I was like, what? And I don't think a lot of these, like, I don't think maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think like Kathy Bates or Francis McDormand have done a Sam Raymond movie or Holly Hunter. Yeah, I don't think so. Which is weird, I feel like, if you all live together. But then you're like, how long did you guys live together? Like a month? Yeah. Um, anyway, that's like I'll keep some of these fun facts for later when we're talking through some of these specific scenes. Um But I think first things first, what are your overall opinions as someone who's never seen this movie?
SPEAKER_01I found it really enjoyable. The entire time I was watching it. Um what year did Beetlejuice come out? 87?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Are you looking at it?
SPEAKER_0188. Okay, Beetlejuice came out a year after this movie, which of note, this movie came out six years after the original. Which I guess, because I was like, I don't understand why they kind of reshot the opening for this one and then, but like changed it, but did it. Uh, and then it was like, oh, it came out six years later. So probably that's why I would think.
SPEAKER_00Well, actually, originally they were gonna have the in like the entire cast be the same amount of people for the opening, but to save money, they just made it him and his girlfriend going to the cabin at the beginning.
SPEAKER_01Gotcha.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um, yeah, it's funny that they like did like a recap that way instead of just like taking cuts from the original film to save even more money. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But watching it, because it's so close to Beetlejuice, I guess like this couldn't like super heavily influence Beetlejuice, but I like kept like multiple times I was like, my god, like this is like Tim Burton shit. Like all the like the head and like the wormhead and shit like that. It just felt so Beetlejuicy to me.
SPEAKER_00Actually, the wormhead, that is, you know, it's funny. When I saw the again, when I saw the wormhead in this movie in Evil Dead 2, I was like, that reminds me of a worm, like something else, sort of like prosthetic, weird-looking face thing. And I think it is Betelgeuse. Yeah, that's so bizarre how that happens. And I mean who knows, maybe it's the same like special effects people worked on both.
SPEAKER_01It could that could be it was so similar. Like even yeah, like as I was watching the uh let's see what I wrote. Open an exposition reminds me of Beetlejuice. I just don't remember what I was talking about there, but that's okay. Like when she comes out of the grave and does her like little dance and all that, like I was like, this it reminded me of like Nightmare Before Christmas. So I I feel like I feel like he's had to have influenced Tim Burton in some way. Although Tim Burton does have like his has always had like a long history. I don't know if you ever saw his exhibit from like all his childhood drawings and stuff that they did at the end.
SPEAKER_00I've seen some of those pictures and stuff, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, when they did that exhibit in LA, it was like incredible. Um but very they were very, very similar to me. And I like I love that stuff. Like I love Jim Hanson, I love Tim Burton. So when it's like practical, like paprian animatronics and things like that, I'm always gonna be way more into it than CGI. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I agree. I think that there's something about it so obviously like stop motion and so obviously prosthetics that like it's sort of like we it's like them saying, we know this doesn't look like a real thing. Like we just like this aesthetic and we like how much fun we're having with it. Did you understand what I meant when I was like this was like Looney Tunes, the movie? Like there's a lot of slapstick, sort of like you know, him shooting at his hand that's in the mouse hole and stuff like that, like Tom and Jerry stuff, you know what I mean? Like stuff like that that I feel like is really cool about this movie. And honestly, like one of the inspirations for this movie is like the the three stooges. Um that's hilarious, and just slapstick slapstick comedy in general, you know, and I think that comes off.
SPEAKER_01Watching it, like I don't know if I can bring myself to do this because I really hate Toby Maguire. But since we've been talking so much about how Raimi shoots and like his camera movement is very obvious, like Ash going through the car windshield and the eyeball that you mentioned in the last episode. I don't know if that made it into the episode, but we talked about it afterwards.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um watching it now, I'm like, okay, I can understand. Like, like this looks excuse me. He still looks haven't taken my allergy pill yet, so you're just gonna have to.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say, I'm gonna this is just more work for me later.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sorry. Um his evil dead films look more like a a beginning director who's doing a lot more like steady cam that is not steady, you know. Um but I can see where 25 years later, with a bunch of money and cranes using his style of shooting for Spider-Man is brilliant.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I agree. I think like that's the cool thing. You can if you watch his movies in the sequence, like you can see him like getting also better. I don't think it's just better equipment, it's also he's getting more refined in the way. Where like even in a movie like Send Help, finally, you're not even really noticing. Yeah, like you're so like the it's blending so well into the story, you're not necessarily noticing the camera work that he's doing, which is also good, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because like this one there was some really weird ones where it's like you you admire that he's trying to do something fun, but it was like the one where it was like go into their faces and then up and then down, and then like it was just doing all this weird ass shit. And it was like, okay, like I get it, you'd like to play with camera movement, but I'm like getting dizzy now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I get it, yeah, for sure. It is sort of like an early uh attempt at all that stuff. And there's even that scene at the beginning where it's chasing him, like you mentioned, through the car, and then it goes through the house and it hits the three doors, you know? He like closes the door and then it breaks through that door, and then it closes. Each one of those doors like break a different way, like one just like opens, one shatters, one falls like forward. Like he's thinking about all this like cool stuff to make like you're not even really noticing that he's like trying to make every little element different in a way.
SPEAKER_01But one thing about that that Chloe called out right away, she was like, I do not get the fucking rules. Like sometimes it can come through a window, but then like other times it like can't come in the door. Like, she's like, What are the fucking rules?
SPEAKER_00There are none. Yeah, it's just fun, it's just a fun thing.
SPEAKER_01It's a game of cat and mouse, like Tom and Jerry.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. You're just supposed to be like, These are like every little individual scene is like its own little mini scene sort of thing.
SPEAKER_01And um that part when he's chasing him through the house and he like goes like through like between the walls real quick.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, then it keeps falling on him.
SPEAKER_01I was like, that's cool, but how easy is it to just run in between your walls and your house if you're running for something?
SPEAKER_00Like, but that's the that's why it's I don't know. I think that's why I think it's almost like he's almost like behind the camera guy. He's like behind the set somehow.
SPEAKER_01But that set is so good. Like, I was just like, this would be like the perfect Halloween Horror Knights house. Like they have a poltergeist house that I think they could like do similar stuff with, like they did with this. And I'm like, Horror Knights just needs to do like a throwback horror year and do like they can bring back their poltergeist house, like do an evil dead house.
SPEAKER_00Like this this set would lend itself so well to it. It's such a creepy house. Even the shed, when they go into the shed, it's like everything's like sort of like Tim Burtonesque, where it's like a skew, just nothing straight up and down. It's like sort of crooked, everything.
SPEAKER_01But the chalk outline of chainsaw goes here.
SPEAKER_00Dude, that scene gets me every time because he looks at it and then bursts through the door is the is the body with the chainsaw. Every time I jump, I forget that's happening.
SPEAKER_01That was so ridiculous. We were laughing so hard when he's like chainsaw in her head.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And the blood just going everywhere per usual. Um so you liked it overall.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I did. There were cheesy moments that made me like laugh at the cheesiness, but I think that's okay. Like, like when they're redoing the opening, and Ash sits down and he's like playing the piano, and I was like, Oh my god, what a masterful piano player! Like, that was ridiculous. Yeah, and he he did feel different to me in this one, like more confident in himself, and maybe that was Bruce Campbell who became more confident in that role and and how he wanted to shape the character.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But Ash felt in the first one a little more like somebody afraid who has to step into their own. And before, you know, if this is essentially recreating that opening and just a short snippet, it felt like he was like this like machismo brave guy before anything started happening, which kind of didn't match the first one.
SPEAKER_00That's true. I I always have felt like the first one is supposed to be looked at as like a straight up just horror movie. And then when he made this sequel, it was so much later, and he wanted to incorporate like this more comedic slapstick style. Like he was just like overact, be overconfident. Like even the piano playing, like it's supposed to be sort of a joke in itself.
SPEAKER_01It's interesting when you make it this far later, and you can go back and go, okay, people still really appreciate the one from six years ago, but what is it they appreciate about it? It's like the like ridiculousness and the comedy elements, so we're gonna play that up and the horror down, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, totally, totally. And just wait, uh you haven't seen Army of Darkness, have you?
SPEAKER_01No, but I put a poll on our Instagram asking which film was everybody's favorite. A lot of people said two, but the winner was Army of Darkness.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like that's Army. I love first of all, I love Army of Darkness, but it it is like such its own thing, I feel like. Like, while it is a sequel to this movie and Ash is in it, it feels like it's so removed from it's a cabin horror.
SPEAKER_01Funny when he lands there in the end. I was like, I don't know why, but I immediately thought of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
SPEAKER_00Totally, totally, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I'm like, what am I getting into with this third one? It's gonna feel very disp different from the rest of these. And then we're gonna go from that into Evil Dead Rise. It's gonna be really abrupt.
SPEAKER_00It's gonna be jarring. And that's why at first, when we were talking about this, people don't know this, we were like, well, maybe we won't do Army of Darkness, right?
SPEAKER_01We we talked about not doing it, but then it was like I didn't want to do the 2013 remake as a separate one because I just didn't know if there'd be enough to say about it and the original, which is why we combined it those, and then we had a little time slot to fill. So Army of Darkness made it in. And good thing because everybody loves it most on our Instagram.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's great. It's also got one of those awesome posters where he's like oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01I like how the posters like the drawing in the book when she's like looking through the pages of how to stop it, and it's like Chloe's like, Oh, I didn't realize they had chainsaws in medieval times. And I was like, Well, that's coming back.
SPEAKER_00Totally. Um, I do want to talk about how cool that scene is. It's towards the beginning where that where he's discovered the book again, and they obviously they have that cool pan shot to the tape recorder, it's like the same type of thing. Then they have this like almost like old school, like 1940s serial style with like the books close up and it's flipping through its own pages, and it's like the backgrounds just like fire and brimstone, and yeah, like I just it's so perfect purposely uh cheesy in a way. Like, I there's something I just love about that whole thing, like it's so well put together for being as cheesy as it is.
SPEAKER_01The one thing I hated about it was like the like chanting of the words that like brings this demon back or whatever. It's like all this like made up, like whatever, and I'm like into it. And it was like nos for and I was like, are we is it a vampire?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but like who cares? I don't know. Like, I think it's the same words they use in the in the remake, too. Some of them are similar.
SPEAKER_01I miss Nasferatu in the other ones, but they did it at the end of this too when she's like sending it back, and they did Nasferatu again. But also the that first 10-minute like little remake, I guess if we're calling it. It's very jarring. Like, I understand wanting to like recap what happened in the first one, but he is real quick, real quick to just like cut his girlfriend's head off and bury her body. You're right.
SPEAKER_00They say like the real way to watch this movie is to watch the first movie and then pick up right when he gets chased and possessed for the first time.
SPEAKER_01I can see how that makes way more sense because it does pick up where the last one left off. But and and having that I get why they did it, but I yeah, I think skip on it.
SPEAKER_00I do think it sets the tone though. I think it sets the tone of like, okay, this isn't a serious movie. Yeah. Like I think you're like, he's okay, he's he's just killing his girlfriend like within two seconds of being possessed, and like not trying to save her or anything.
SPEAKER_01Like some of the changes I like I couldn't not laugh at. Like the in the first one, like I love the little broken down bridge that they like can't get across. And then this one is like a giant suspension bridge, and then suddenly it's just all mangled with no explanation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That one I laughed at. Also, I think I mean I think this movie greatly influenced a lot of other filmmakers and movies, and I like kept being like, okay, I see so many ways this must have influenced Jazz Whedon in both Buffy and obviously Cabin in the Woods. Um, but there were so many Buffy moments, and I was like, I feel like Xander's character was just like Ash.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's hilarious. First of all, that's funny to me because like, and we're not gonna make this a Buffy podcast, but Xander is also a very polarizing character in general. People don't like him. Um, they think he's like toxic and whatnot. But now that you say that, I he does have that vibe, sort of. He totally is like he doesn't have any superpowers in the show. Like he could have totally become, like, if they actually did it, like this this Ash-like character, right? Like that they never really went fully into. Um, that's really cool. But I I you're right. Like, I think this movie again, it's like a it's like a filmmaker's movie, I think. Yeah, like like it influences so many other films. There's even some early Peter Jackson films that are very similar to this, because you know, Peter Jackson started out doing horror too. And um, but like Cabin in the Woods, I mean that that had to come. I mean, I don't I was trying to think, like, what was the first like Cabin horror movie? It couldn't, it it probably wasn't Evil Dead, but I think it was the the most important early by far the most successful that still resonates and influences exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, even Chloe was like, When you guys are doing Evil Dead, are you gonna do Cabin in the Woods? And I was like, Well yeah, I'm down. We'll we'll probably do it, but I like I don't know if this is necessarily part of the considered part of the Evil Dead, but she was like, I know it just feels like it is one of these films, and I was like, Yeah, it does kind of we should do that.
SPEAKER_00Maybe we'll find a break some at some point and do it. Yeah, but I think we can always reference the Evil Dead.
SPEAKER_01Well, we do have like some slots we have to fill right at the end of this between this and like going into some other stuff. So maybe we just do Cabin in the Woods to top this one off and like discuss how he influenced Wheaton. So back to Evil Dead 2.
SPEAKER_00Let's go back to Evil Dead 2. So my favorite, like I uh my favorite parts of this movie, it's funny. Like, I I like the whole thing, but I really like when he's by himself at the beginning of this. Yeah, and obviously, I want to talk about the hand, his hand possession scene, because that is like probably my favorite scene in the whole movie.
SPEAKER_01I like the mirror scene that you you kind of told me about it, but didn't use it.
SPEAKER_00Well, there's a mirror scene in the first movie, too. I don't remember it compared to this one. Well, it's completely in the first movie, he's like looking at a mirror and he and he his he pushes his hand in it and turns into liquid. That's right. And in this one, it's like a double comes out and grabs him. Yeah, right. I really enjoyed that in this one. And then he's like looking away and then he's like, duh. And he's like, okay. Yeah, I enjoyed that. That's cool. But this this hand possession scene where his hand gets possessed, first of all, obviously influenced the movie Idle Hands. Maybe we should do that one too.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, what a throwback. I would totally do that movie.
SPEAKER_00But he apparently uh Bruce Campbell improved that entire scene with his hand. Really? He was so good at it that they just kept the first take in the movie. That's that's the first take that he went.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's awesome.
SPEAKER_00So, like when he's sitting there in the kitchen and he's like smashing himself with the with the plates and everything, like that's all improved.
SPEAKER_01I was watching it. It's funny that you brought up Bidal Hands because I was watching it and I was like, this reminds me of Liar Liar when Jim Carrey's like, totally, totally.
SPEAKER_00Um, I just think that's like such a fun, like that's what I'm saying. Like, that to me is like it is sort of this slapstick, slapstick three stooges thing, this Looney Tunes thing where he's like, first he's fighting his hand, and then it's like pulling him across the floor, right? And I don't know how they did that. I don't know if he's pushing himself or someone else is pushing him.
SPEAKER_01Um my guess would be that somebody's pulling him and then they have to like reverse it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, maybe they did it that way.
SPEAKER_01I feel like that's probably the easiest way to shoot it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, maybe. Um, but then he cuts off his own hand, right? And like in such a like psychic psychotic way, his face is just insane. And then to have it go the extra mile of like his hand is still like now it's like free to just run around everywhere and fuck up. And then it comes back way later and and tries to attack the other guests. Like, I just this whole what they can do with just this one premise, and like to Chloe's point about there not being rules, it allows like all of these crazy situations to happen when he's just there by himself in the house, in the cabin.
SPEAKER_01It's fun to watch because it's it's clearly people making this movie for like the fun of it and not the like I'm making some masterpiece that's gonna live on forever, but because it's so fun, it does live on forever.
SPEAKER_00Totally. It's so original in its like creativity, right? Like that is creative, like the situations that he's going through and the people, the way that people are reacting to it, it's just it it's memorable. And yeah, they're clearly having fun with it, they're clearly like inspiring themselves. And you have to wonder like how much of this really was pre-planned in the script and how much did they just add on the day, like, oh, we should do a scene where you know, so and so this happens, like even the eyeball scene where like they they're trying to jam what's her name back into the trap door and her eye pops off, and just that like one tracking shot of the eye just flying across the room, like that's been created over and over and over again, too, with different, like different items. Um it's just fun.
SPEAKER_01It is also okay. Do you remember when I was telling you about um going to the Alamo Draft House and my like don't talk during the movie sequence was like that decapitated head that like bites onto his dick and the and he's like fighting it and smashing it against the chair. That clearly came from this movie when like the severed head like bites onto him and he's fighting the severed head. I was like, Oh, there it is.
SPEAKER_00That's funny. I didn't even put that together. See, sometimes I forget what's even in this movie. There's so much happening in this movie. I kind of wish I wrote more notes because the second half of the movie is always fuzzy to me of what the order of events are.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Even like how everyone else dies, except for the two of well, I guess she dies too at the end, huh? She gets stabbed in the back by that giant um sword.
SPEAKER_01I was laughing when it's like it picks up their story, and she like has come back to her boyfriend with the pages, and I was like, oh, this 20-year-old archaeologist. Exactly. Archaeologist, I can't say that word right now. Archaeologist, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you got it.
SPEAKER_01I wanted to be like archaeological. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Archaeologicalist.
SPEAKER_01Archaeologicalist. Uh but I like I laughed at that. I was like, mm, okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It totally matches like the vibe of that opening book of the dead sequence where oh, there's like some like treasure hunters like trying to find them lost pages for their dads, blah blah blah, you know, and then coming back to this disgusting cabin in the woods to do their work for some reason.
SPEAKER_01Why would anybody be like, I need to get away to our shack?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, I don't know. It's secluded. That's where her dad was. That's where her parents lived, apparently. 24-7.
SPEAKER_01Why? That place looks like shit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it does. Um, by the way, so uh her mom, who becomes all possessed and gross, the the person in that is his brother. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Yes, I read that his brother played what was what was her name in it? Uh oh, Henrietta. That's my grand my great-grandma Henrietta. Oh, really? So I was like laughing at that, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I love this the scene where and this is what I'm saying, like they do so many clever things with their expectations. I think that's what the cool thing about this is like every time you're like, oh, I didn't expect that to happen. Like he they throw him into the the trapdoor because they don't they think he killed everyone or whatever. And then they're reading it, and then her like her dad's diary enters and like, oh, I had to bury Henrietta in the basement, and then immediately it pops up out of the basement.
SPEAKER_02That was hilarious.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's so funny. Like, I love and then he's like they have that suspensionful thing where he's like, Let me out, let me out.
SPEAKER_01It was funny watching all the Henrietta sequences because I had read right before because I when it started, I started reading the trivia really quick because I wanted to see if there was anything in it about why they did the first 10 minutes like they did, yeah, which was not, unfortunately. But then I saw that his brother played Henrietta Possessed, and then I was just like dying watching it and was like, Yeah.
SPEAKER_00See, I didn't know until I read that today. I didn't I I don't know what I who I thought was in that costume. I kind of thought it was her, but that makes no sense. And then they have that scene where she goes back to her normal self and she's just like, hush, little baby. Like, who sings that song? She's like, Oh, you used to sing to me that when I was a kid, like no one's parents ever sang them that song.
SPEAKER_01My mom would sing it. I was telling Chloe this one or something. My mom would sing it, but like I was like maybe like seven or eight, and she would be like, and if that diamond ring turns brass, mom was gonna buy you a monkey's ass, and we would just crack up.
SPEAKER_00That would be a weird conversation at the store.
SPEAKER_01Do you have a monkey's ass?
SPEAKER_00Do you have a monkey's rear end, please? Preferably baboon. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, what else would you want, I guess? It's really the only memorable monkey ass.
SPEAKER_01Of memorable monkey asses.
SPEAKER_00Baboon is the highest.
SPEAKER_01Um but that did bring back childhood memories for me of just like giggling so hard in bed as she's like.
SPEAKER_00So you pictured your mom as that person trapped in the in the basement.
SPEAKER_01Basically, yes. This this had a lot of familial connections for me. The monkey ass rockabite hush little baby song. What is that song called?
SPEAKER_00Hush Little Baby. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That Henrietta, it was just my childhood all over again. Yeah. In my cabin.
SPEAKER_00That's hilarious. Um, I want to talk about. I feel like in the first one, Ash is just a character, he's just the hero. I don't even know what they call him Ash. They must, though, at some point. But in this one, he becomes to me like the icon, the iconic, you know, with the blue button up and the chainsaw for a hand, right? And the boomstick. He calls it a boomstick in the in the next one where he like has a soled off shotgun over a thing that seemingly never runs out of ammo. Um like that whole look. I remember being a kid and seeing like posters of that, or we would go to Planet Hollywood and they'd be showing clips from Evil Dead. And I would just immediately be like, what is that? Like something about his whole look with the chainsaw hand and the blood on his face. Like, I was like, I want to watch that. Um, something about that is. He is the first person to have sexy blood on himself. We should have we should have a little mini podcast within a podcast called Sexy Blood, and we rate the sexy blood in the movie.
SPEAKER_01Okay. You know, a little rating scale.
SPEAKER_00Like, is there sexy blood or is it just gross or whatever? There's a lot of gross blood in this as well.
SPEAKER_01There is. Also, I read speaking of, you know how like at some point the blood turns green?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And I read that. Do you know why they did that?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01They were changing blood colors throughout the film to try to avoid an NC17 rating. Like they thought if they made it more like playful and ridiculous, that it wouldn't get like such a hardcore series rating.
SPEAKER_00I think I honestly, I think they were able to release the movie not rated at all. Yeah. Which is I forget how they did that, but they did something. Maybe it was part of partially that point that you just made, but which is funny because I don't I always just assume this was an R-rated movie, which honestly, like looking at it right now, like it's pretty tame. Like, I guess maybe in the 80s, that amount of blood, regardless of if it's comedic or not, is like shocking to the movie.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's tame now because homity core, comedy horror is such a thing. Did I say homedy core?
SPEAKER_00It was perfect. That should be their our podcast name.
SPEAKER_01Homity core.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sounds like an a cappella group. Um, you know, like compared to films nowadays, like, yeah, it seems tame. But back then, like just the like non-stop flow of blood spraying in people's faces. It's probably a lot.
SPEAKER_00There's apparently there's a lot of uh deleted scenes in this movie that are completely lost to time and like no one knows where they exist. But like there's like a scene when she when he has his girlfriend's head in the vice. Have you read all these fat? I'm just like regurgitating stuff you've already read. When he has his girlfriend's head in the vice, like there's I guess there's a scene where she blows up, she throws up like black sludge onto him. So like you can notice that at some point in that scene, like there's just like black on her mouth sort of thing, which comes out of nowhere because they cut that scene out. Um, do you have any other notes you want to talk about?
SPEAKER_01Like any other he I did notice he reused some shots that he clearly really likes from the first one, like the shot of blood getting on the light bulb, and then like the room kind of going red. That was in the first one. Um, I have a shit ton of notes in this one.
SPEAKER_00I do feel like like he again, this is a movie. Oh, I didn't say the box office one at the beginning. This movie cost like three and a half million. It made almost six million at the box office. And it has a Metacritic of 72, which I think is like weird. Like for a movie that's this historic. That's why Medic all these reviews these days suck.
SPEAKER_01Um, but dude, speaking of, I just read an article. I'm gonna have to find where I read it so we can like link to it or something. But I read something that was like you basically can't trust movie reviews these days, like they're all bullshit because it's all influencers who are paid to say things are good.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Or user or bots on the user review side and stuff. I'm also convinced when things get uh review bombed, it's also other like competing um like studios review bombing too, in a way.
SPEAKER_01Like yeah, you just can't trust anything. Just go see movies and decide for yourself.
SPEAKER_00Just make your own goddamn opinion. People think for yourselves, all right?
SPEAKER_01Um loved the possessed laughing deer head. That was fucking hilarious. And so at my cabin right now, we have like a fake deer head that's a karaoke machine. So the deer will sing to you, or you can plug the mic in and like sing through the deer head. So we were like dying at that enclosed. Like, no wonder I've always hated that thing. I must have repressed this memory.
SPEAKER_00I wish you could make your one in the cabin all like possessed looking with like no eye, like no pupils on the eyelids and stuff.
SPEAKER_01Should I just creep it out one night and everybody come down and be like, what the fuck happened to the deer?
SPEAKER_00Just switch it out with a possessed one. I bet you they make that. And the lamp that's going up and down, he's just like losing his mind. He's just like, uh he's so good in this, man. He's so it's you know, it's I always think it's kind of sad that he wasn't a bigger star. Like he's really just like a cult, you know, movie guy.
SPEAKER_01But he did. I mean, I'm sure he's doing fine. He made an entire career out of getting to play this character and is beloved by so many people.
SPEAKER_00He's in every Sam Raimi movie. He was in Doctor Strange, he was in Spider-Man. He's in all the Spider-Man. He's and one of them, he's the guy at the Matre D who's like, you're late to the play, and he'd like your shoes untied, and then he ties his shoe, and then he gets up, he's like, Oh, you can't come in because of the show's already started. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01I feel like he's got too um structural of a face to be a leading man.
SPEAKER_00It is, it's almost fake looking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is such sharp features.
SPEAKER_00You're just like, oh my god, your chin, your cheeks, your brow. All over like, dude. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I also laugh my ass off after the deer possession when like all the things in the house are going wild, and then he just like blasts through the front door at the people arriving. Just like I was like, I wrote down, oops, gunned down the 20-year-old archaeologist. Turns out she was fine. He's Billy Joe though. Billy Joe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Billy Joel? Billy Joe. Billy Joe. Billy Joe.
SPEAKER_01Billy Joe.
SPEAKER_00Holly Hunter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I wish it was Holly Hunter. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I wrote down, I don't remember this, but I wrote in quotes and I must have really liked it. Uh, someone's in my fruit cellar.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01That was that Henrietta all possessed or something? Maybe. I must have just been like really laughing at it.
SPEAKER_00I do think it's well, I never really heard the term fruit cellar, and that stood out to me as well. Um I was gonna make a point. You distracted me about the budget. Oh, I think that Sam Raimi, because that first movie was sort of like an independent, like, I don't think a lot of people saw it, like he did incorporate like similar like I think he wanted to make this is the this is my ultimate Evil Dead movie. Like the first one is great and stuff, but like I wanna I have money, I'm gonna put everything I can into this thing, and like hopefully people are gonna go see this one, blah blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_01Um it reminds me of talking to Joey about Woozy, and um obviously we can't talk about his budget, but we were like, if you like, if this gets released and you get way more money, would you remake the first one or would you just go bigger for the second one and he was like, Oh, bigger for the second? I made I made the movie I wanted to make. Like, then I just get to go bigger and do something cooler.
SPEAKER_00That would be cool though if you did sort of a Evil Dead 2 situation where maybe he like recapped the beginning of the movie in a like the short 10 minutes and then like went Evil Dead style balls to the wall for the for the sequel. That'd be like. That'd totally be fun. That would be really fun. Um yeah, it's hard. I again, like I know, you know, this is I feel like this is one of those movies. I remember being in high school and maybe we said this last week, but it was like your friends, you know, you didn't have the internet, you didn't know where to go get recommendations, you didn't even have like any kind of review aggregator to like be like, what movies are worth watching, or there's no Reddit. So like your other film nerds in in at least for me in high school would be like, Oh, have you seen Evil Dead 2? And you'd be like, nah. And they'd be like, For me, it was like here's my VHS copy of it. Go watch it at home, and you'd be like, Hell yeah, I'm gonna go to the show.
SPEAKER_01You could at our high school request your homeroom teacher, and I always requested the same one every year because that like 30 minutes before lunch or whatever. Like, all I wanted to do was talk about what movies came out that weekend.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's cool.
SPEAKER_01So his was like always the best homeroom. Anybody who liked movies wanted Mr. Scott's homeroom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's really cool. So we we need that in high school. Yeah, but I feel like having that community to trust outside of the internet. Like, do you have like this this you know, Motley crew of friends to be like, you gotta watch Evil Dead 2, you've never seen, and then obviously you have no way to watch a trailer for it, you have no idea to like what to you can read the back of the box, you know, and then you put it in, you're like, what the fuck is this movie? This is insane. I've never seen anything like this before. And like I miss those days where now everything that comes out, you go on, and it's just like either so much praise for it, or just like so much like overly negative stuff. And it's just like I just want to separate myself from like this hive mind way of thinking about everything. Just like, why did somebody else love this movie? Why I want to know, like, what like a movie like this that's so bizarre and weird. Like if you watch and go like what makes this movie special and different, and like how I could see how this would influence other people, like that's more interesting to me than just to be like, oh, all these prosthetics, they look fake. But this claymation looks fake. It's like who cares? Like, I don't care. Yeah, I'm here to watch something you know new and interesting. Yeah, and this movie kind of nails that feeling. Um yeah, so what like what are your final thoughts for this? Like, what are you? Is this a movie you watch again?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. So like what like I can see how like, you know, because we do a horror movie marathon every year where it's like all of October, it's a movie every day. And I think as Donnie's getting old enough where we can show him certain movies, um, I like this is one where I'm like, these are just fun. These are movies that we can revisit every year for a fun thing. And then I was like, actually, like doing like the first three, like if we ever did like a slasher bash event where it's like a movie marathon, like these would be perfect to put like drinking games to and theming and like like this has to be the first slasher bash, I think.
SPEAKER_00I'm down, yeah. Hell yeah. I would almost like not to and maybe some people will take offense to this, but I was on I would almost just do a double feature of Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. Like you gotta do it. Just because Evil Dead 1 is so similar to Evil Dead 2 for a party, you know.
SPEAKER_01You know what I mean? But if you're doing like a full-out marathon, you gotta have it be long enough.
SPEAKER_00Like Well that okay, I see what you're saying, yeah. Yeah, yeah. That makes sense.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. Um, I did really laugh too. I'm looking at my like last few notes. I did laugh how like uh the guy in the overalls, like she stabs him, and then she like slams him into the door, and then she's like yelling at him to shut up. And it's like, damn, you're cold.
SPEAKER_00That's one of those characters that you can't wait for him to die.
SPEAKER_01I was laughing even harder. Who was it that was like getting pulled? Was it the same guy who's getting pulled under the floor and blood spraying everywhere and they're like still holding on to the legs? It's like I think you can let go. I think it's too late.
SPEAKER_00There's a there's also a shot where he like gets his neck snapped, do you think, but then he's fine?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what I'm talking about? And you're like, okay, I guess he just stood up after that. Um, yeah. This movie, honestly, if we're wrapping things up here a little bit, and then I want to talk about your excitement for the next one. Um, this is one of this is just a special movie for me. I don't watch it constantly, but I I probably watch like once a year, so I have the Blu-ray of it. Like, it's one of those movies I put on, and I just enjoy solely the filmmaking aspect of it. And I and it makes me think like everything that we're missing today in in movies is just like everything is shot so generically. And like, look, I get it. Sometimes you see shots, especially in this movie where like this is so overly obviously they're doing something with the camera here that it could take you out of a movie or whatever.
SPEAKER_01But but this is the type of film that inspires young filmmakers. Exactly, exactly. I just want to get a camera and go out and make shit.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. This is one of those movies I think like you can watch this movie and be like, minus the prosthetics, you can be like, I could do this, yeah. Right? Like I can write something and have it all take place in one location.
SPEAKER_01Literally, I was like, We can. Between our cabins, we gotta film something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. We'd just be compared to this movie, probably.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01That's okay.
SPEAKER_00But anyway, yeah, this is one of my favorite movies, uh, horror movies. Um, it's probably my top 20 of all time, just because of its creativity, and I love Sam Raimi to death. And uh, yeah, if obviously you've watched it if you're listening to this, because this is this is also one of those movies you could spoil and and you could still watch it and not really be spoiled. Do you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I feel like if you I feel like if you haven't haven't seen it and just heard this, you'd probably have no fucking idea what we're talking about, but you're just like sounds like there's like a lot of weird violent scenes and camera shots.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like this is also a movie where like almost every five seconds you could like make a gif out of.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Do you know what I mean? Like everyone. I'm gonna have fun with our social next week.
SPEAKER_00Actually, that's that's awesome. I bet you there's a bunch already made. Oh, I'm sure. Speaking of social, I feel like do you you post the posters of movies sometimes, right? Mm-hmm. Because I feel like Army Darkness has a very cool poster that's worth posting.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00When we do that one.
SPEAKER_01Typically the day that we release the episode, I post the poster. Um, and then for the other posts, I either pull like a video clip or like promotional images and then put like audio bites over it.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome. By the way, I think our last episode did really well. Yeah. Pretty quickly.
SPEAKER_01It's been getting traction for sure.
SPEAKER_00Which is, I think it might be the versus thing. We might want to think about doing more of those. Doing more of those. Yeah. Anyway, let's talk about what your expectations are for this next movie, Army of Darkness. Do you know anything about this movie? No, nothing. Did you know anything about this movie before you maybe researched it a little bit?
SPEAKER_01I haven't researched Army of Darkness. I knew nothing about it. I know that.
SPEAKER_00Have you heard the title? Is this a movie you were aware of?
SPEAKER_01Um, I was aware of, and I knew that it is an Evil Dead movie, but that is not not always considered like a direct sequel, I guess. Um, but as soon as I saw what was happening in two, I was like, oh, okay. So this is gonna be a really different plop, but got it. Like now I have a feeling I know exactly where it's going. And it's gonna be, like I said, very Monty Python.
SPEAKER_00Uh yes. You're gonna get sort of the same. First of all, the movie is grander. There's more than one location, obviously, in this movie coming up. I won't, I'm not gonna say a lot. Um, but yeah, this movie is like on a whole nother level. It it it obviously is related to it's the same sort of like camp and fun and humor and stuff, right? But like it is just him being able to do whatever the fuck he wants in this movie, and it it's really cool. And there's some really cool special effects in this movie. Obviously, they're dated a little bit nowadays, but it it just works somehow. Um, I let's talk about the clever, I guess, since we kind of skipped over that. Like, did you expect that to happen in this movie when he goes back in time?
SPEAKER_01No, I didn't.
SPEAKER_00What did I thought?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I as soon as I saw the the book and the picture of him, I was like, oh, okay, this is the setup for the the next one. The next one. Um and then once that like time portal opened, I was like, Oh, okay, that's how it works. But I like I wasn't like predicting it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, by the way, that giant head that he's fighting, that giant face that comes through the door or whatever, was like too big for anyone to carry or anything. So they just left it there.
SPEAKER_01Where is there?
SPEAKER_00Wherever they shot it. They just left it, they just left that giant head and they said it disappeared and no one knew where it went for years and years and years, and then they found it in some like haunted horror house thing. Someone had claimed it.
SPEAKER_01Fucking hilarious. They're just like, whatever, we we can't lift this. So that's hilarious.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Anyway, uh, I am excited for you to see the next one. I think now you kind of are in the right mindset of what you tonally what your expectations are for it.
SPEAKER_01For sure.
SPEAKER_00Um, there's some great one-liners in it too.
SPEAKER_01Oh, there was a good one-liner in this one.
SPEAKER_00There, yeah, this movie's kind of known for the one-liners too, where it's like where he's like groovy. So cool, yeah. That was Evil Dead 2.
SPEAKER_01And it was a blast.
SPEAKER_00It's a blast of a movie, and you should definitely watch it if you haven't already.
SPEAKER_01And if you haven't, you can come to the first slasher bash event. Well, now we're committed, I guess. Yeah, we gotta do it. We just gotta figure out the logistics.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we'll figure it out. Um, next week, Army of Darkness. And yeah. And then we get into like, oh wait, we need a what if what's our new sign-off? Oh, yeah, from last. What is it now? We need like a line. Yeah. I don't want to say swallow this.
SPEAKER_01I know. I was like, it's funny, but do we really want to? Out of context. I guess when we don't have a good one, do we just go back to go get them, cuz?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I do like just saying go get 'em cuz. Let me. All right. Should we just say uh till next time, go get them, cuz? Till next time. Go get them go. Go get them, cuz. That was terrible. Go get 'em, cuz.
SPEAKER_01Go get them.
