This week on Slasher Bash, Maddi and Ben discuss if they were "wow'd" by the 2023 reboot Evil Dead Rise.  Do they think it rises to the occasion?

SPEAKER_03

Let's do this, bitch. What's up, everybody? Welcome to Slasher Bash, the podcast. Podcast. We're two friends talk all things horror. Sometimes we do them in big horror movie blocks. We're deep in the middle of our Evil Dead block of horror movies. Franchise blocks. Franchise blocks? What did I say?

SPEAKER_00

Horror movie blocks.

SPEAKER_03

Well, you know. You know.

SPEAKER_01

They got it. They get it.

SPEAKER_03

We're reviewing uh Evil Dead Rise today. And I'm one of your hosts, Benjamin. With my co-host here, Madison.

SPEAKER_00

What's up?

SPEAKER_03

And we're just chilling. We're chilling in spots we don't usually record in.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's bizarro. If we sound weird, that's why.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Exactly. It's not that we don't know what we're doing. It's that we're in unusual spots.

SPEAKER_00

With new equipment. New equipment. Old new equipment.

SPEAKER_03

Anyway, what's up? You're really lounging. You're really leaning back. I am falling asleep.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not gonna fall asleep. Got a good good night's sleep last night and the night before. Oh my gosh, I went to bed at like nine o'clock and slept until eight. Thank god my kid slept in. It was glorious.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Um, are you sick of Evil Dead?

SPEAKER_01

I'm not sick of Evil Dead, but I wish that the new ones were like the OG3. Yeah. I could go for more of that.

SPEAKER_03

Well, before we jump into that, you got some stats? Not really, actually. We're we're reviewing Evil Dead Rise. Came out in 2023. Directed by Lee Cronin, who hasn't done much in the past.

SPEAKER_01

But he's got the mummy out right now. What's with him putting like dead kids in his movies? Like, I didn't go see his mummy because I was like a mummy child. I don't need to see that. Uh, and then I'm watching this and I was like, oh, okay. More kids.

SPEAKER_03

I feel like Dead Kids has always been a creepy thing. I mean, Night of the Living Dead, right? There's Dead Kid, there's Dead Zombie Kid.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if I ever saw that.

SPEAKER_03

What the hell? What the hell? Are we gonna do that next? Maybe. All the Dawn or all the Living Dead movies? Um, anyway, welcome back to your normal house. Sorry, Shaw.

SPEAKER_01

Why thank you? Ten days away is a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I bet.

SPEAKER_01

How many days are you away? Like six months?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, six months. No, you've been there like over a month. Seven weeks, maybe? I've only been here for three weeks, I think. I don't know. It's different. I'm yeah.

SPEAKER_01

If I could be at my cabin for the whole summer, I would.

SPEAKER_03

Just do it.

SPEAKER_01

Uh you know. Wives and in-laws, that long. Like a full house of in-laws gets tough on anybody. Just go ahead, no matter how much you like your in-laws. But we have people who like live, yeah, like all summer long, like the whole family's up there.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So if we want to have solo time there, we have to go in the winter.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. That could be cool.

SPEAKER_01

Winter's bound.

SPEAKER_03

Get some writing done.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I say that every year. I'm gonna go to Montana for a month and write. And then I just end up drinking beer and watching movies.

SPEAKER_03

That's what Bon Ibeer did. Well, you got that's the thing, you gotta go without any internet. You gotta like disconnect the internet. Throw all the movies in a safe, throw away the key. Literally make yourself be bored. It's the only way to do it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But that's Did you say that's how Bonnie Bear does it?

SPEAKER_03

No, I just know that for that first album he made, he like went up to like some cabin in the in like the wilderness. I doubt he had TV and what I don't know the whole details, but he wrote that whole first album there. And I think he also like recorded it for the most part.

SPEAKER_01

My wife has agreed, once I'm like close to finishing a project, to let me go to stay at Chateau Marmont for a week to wrap it up. Nice. But I can't do that until we have the funds for that.

SPEAKER_00

But I was like, yeah, I need to stay in a cottage and really, you know, tap into the ghosts of creative's past.

SPEAKER_03

And yeah. I've actually never been there. I've never stepped inside that place.

SPEAKER_01

I have actually only been to, well, it's not even there anymore. I think they turned it into something else, but it was like the bar that was like below it, Bar Marmont.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

So it wasn't in the main building, it was like right on sunset.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Okay, I haven't been there either.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it ain't there no more.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I guess that's a good point. Anyway, we're talking about Evil Dead Rise.

SPEAKER_01

I wish the next one was called Evil Dead Fall.

SPEAKER_03

Evil Dead Ri Risen.

SPEAKER_01

Uh couldn't stop laughing at that just because, as I mentioned yesterday, all day, we watched Love Island, and there's this kind of a-hole on it, uh, named Corbin. Or no, it was KC who always says it. One of them is always like, Still I rise to everything. And so then when it was Evil Dead Rise and like she rises.

SPEAKER_03

We should Photoshop that guy in that, in that, so he's the one rising up.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I like that.

SPEAKER_03

That'd be hilarious. Um, this movie, Evil Dead Rise, came or has a Metacritic of 69. So just keep that in mind, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

69.

SPEAKER_03

What do we like this movie? I knew I knew you were gonna do that.

SPEAKER_01

I can't help it. The the teenage boy in me will always be there. He's never gonna die. Can't help it.

SPEAKER_03

What are your initial thoughts of this movie?

SPEAKER_01

Um, you know, like I l I like it as its own thing, but as a continuation of the Evil Dead franchise, it just didn't have enough of the fun in it for me. Like if if it was just not named Evil Dead and was like a new kind of spin-off of possessions, I'd be like, cool, that was that was creepy. Um but calling it Evil Dead, I was just like, it makes it feel like you're not getting what you're being promised by putting that title on it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I it's this this will be a fun discussion because I a hundred percent agree with you. I remember when this came out, and I'm not spoiling anything just yet, and people were like really hyped on it. At least that's what I felt like. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like, this is great, blah, blah, blah. The trailer looked so creepy.

SPEAKER_03

The the trailer was great, the marketing was great. I think it's good to point out right now that I read that this was supposed to be a direct-to-streaming movie, but it tested so well that they released it in the theaters, and I think knowing that sort of changes or it makes a lot more sense of what the quality of this movie is, sort of.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

But I agree. I feel like this movie, and we'll get deep into it, but I feel like overall thoughts, like, I just don't think the movie it tries really hard to be scary, and I'm not scared at all the entire time. Not scared at all, and it's not funny either. So it's like it's lacking both the things that Evil Dead did so well with Rainy, which is there was like the intro, like when his head rolls on the dock. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like we laughed at that, but like it's it's not funny really at all.

SPEAKER_03

It's not funny at all, and it's not scary at all. Like, I and I'm sitting there watching this, like, and maybe I'm just jaded, but I'm sitting there why and we'll full spoilers, just so everyone knows. You're numb to the fear now, Ben.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe, but like I'm I do think that the mom is creepy as shit in it.

SPEAKER_03

Like, she looks creepy, like it'd be good. Like, if you were at like a Hollywood like or a haunted house situation and that thing was running around, you'd be like, holy shit, that's creepy. But like, I'm watching this, like, this possessed person get like stabbed with scissors and stuff, and I'm like, I'm not even I'm not even grossed out. I'm nothing. I feel nothing to this at all. Is that just me? Like, I don't know. Like, I the whole time I was like, and I don't watch it over two days because I fell asleep the first time I watched it. So I don't watch like the last 30 minutes the next day. And it just It was like maybe it was I was in a bad mood when I watched it for but uh again, it was like the same thing. Like, I don't feel like I think there's some cool moments, I will say, like, I think there's some cool moments, especially at the very, very end. But I think overall, like this movie, like I and honestly, like maybe they'll fix it in this new one coming out, but like I feel like it has an identity crisis with this this series of movies where it's like, what is it? There's this book, these are possessed things. They're like, if you're gonna get this serious with it, um, I I don't like to me it lacks identity, and I think it's like at this point, it's relying on the name alone. And sure, it has similar visuals, like they're getting possessed in the same way. They kind of look similar to the the way they've always looked.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, there's lots of moments in it, like especially in the beginning, that are like, let's like pay homage to is it homage? I never know, is it homage or homage? I think you can say either, honestly. I say homage. Pay homage to Sam Raimi. So it's like, you know, like the the I did think like doing the thing through the forest shot, and then it's a drone was like a cleverness. Oh, I have that down modernization. Um and then like obviously, like we see her like at the clock in that first shot of her, and it's like the same clock. Yeah. Oh, you know that.

SPEAKER_03

Sorry. I just thought of thunder on that thing.

SPEAKER_01

You're good, you're good. Thunder stealer. Yeah. Um, that's funny you said that because Chloe called somebody a thunder cunt while watching this.

SPEAKER_03

Oh wow. Well, I mean, there was also a lot of thunder in the movie as well.

SPEAKER_01

Um, but yeah, what was she referring to? The kid who read the book of the dead.

SPEAKER_03

Ah, yes.

SPEAKER_01

I believe I wrote her exact quote.

SPEAKER_03

Um Did she read the book though, or she just played those records?

SPEAKER_01

He?

SPEAKER_03

Or he, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Or they. I know it's a trans actor, so I'm not sure. Well, yeah, no, I I I don't know their pronouns. Um, but in the movie, I uh Dan. Danny, I assume, was a male character. Um where did she say it? I wrote her quote down, but she basically was like called him a thundercut for reading the book, and I laughed. Chloe had a lot of good quotes while I was watching this.

SPEAKER_03

We just need you to record her commentary.

SPEAKER_01

I should. Or just like start tweeting it like when I'm watching. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. That would be funny from our account like tweet like like wife's thoughts. I like that. Yeah, that's funny.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I did like write when it shows her reading Weathering Heights. I was just like, ew, gross. And I don't I just read that book. I like it.

SPEAKER_03

When was she reading that at the very beginning, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that opening scene, she's reading it. And so like when she gets possessed, she's reciting passages from the book. Um, which that particular thing, I part of the book, I only know this because I just read it and absolutely fucking hated it. Um, but that's when like he's being haunted by the ghost of Catherine. So it was like, I guess a clever part to put there. I don't know, but that book fucking sucks.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. I have no I didn't even know there was a ghost in that book.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's just like the intro, like he's like there's like a ghost tapping at the window of of Catherine, and yeah, whatever.

SPEAKER_03

Is that movie a fly or is that book a flashback then? Like it starts and then it flashes back and tells the whole story.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

It's because that's similar to this movie too. You know?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. It's um yeah, also I guess too, because it's like a stranger comes to Weathering Heights essentially and gets the whole gets haunted by the ghost of Catherine and then gets the whole flashback story of what happened with Catherine and Heathcliff. So I guess that's kind of like this, where it's like these we start with these new characters, go back a day before to what happened, and then come back to where we are with these new characters again. Which I don't I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I like that they have like an open and scene that was like supposed to just exist to scare people, but like again, I don't think the movie's that scary. And two, like the whole time I was like, wait, was that girl in the beginning who was like on the bed? Was that was that this main girl that we had?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we kept being like, is that the sister?

SPEAKER_00

Is that who is that?

SPEAKER_01

Like it was more confusing until the very end, and then it was like, oh, that was I don't really get why, but yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I guess the point is like the the possession now is just out, it's just out there now, no one like turned it off. So it's just like running around, I guess. I don't know. Yeah, I guess that's the point. Maybe we'll find out in this new movie. Yeah. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Um so what do you yeah, go ahead. Get to LA. What were you gonna ask?

SPEAKER_03

What do you think about these new characters that we got in this one?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I liked the sisters, the kids, I like the little girl from Stranger Things.

SPEAKER_03

Um little Holly Wheeler.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, yep. The other two, I mean, you know, props for casting a trans actor. I always support that. Um but when the intro to Dan is him like DJing, I wrote down that was the worst fucking remix of L C D sound system ever. You love this fucking movie. Um I think it had I think if it wasn't called Evil Dead, I would have liked it just fine. The problem is you called it Evil Dead and didn't deliver deliver an Evil Dead film. Yeah, I it feels more like a conjuring film to me.

SPEAKER_03

But even that it fails, I feel like. Yeah. And and here's the other thing I don't think works in this in this movie. And it I feel this way about the first remake, which I actually surprisingly, I guess, like more than this one. Um like the mellow dramatic elements in these like more serious films are just like never working for me at all. Like the whole any sort of like drama between like the sisters and like their past, and like the you know, the it's just it's not working. It's so funny.

SPEAKER_01

And the exposition between them was like really heavy.

SPEAKER_03

Like the part where it was like why is this is like the second time now, like because they did in the first one, where like there's some sort of negative tension amongst family members that needs to be resolved. Like, why can't they just be like your sister's visiting? Exactly. And maybe there's like something that's like weird. I I don't know. I just put because there's also like the dad leave the dad left or whatever, right? And the husband left.

SPEAKER_01

I just it's just an overdone trope.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It's not adding anything. I it does not make me care about these characters more. Yeah. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

I did like though there was one shot, I think they were sitting on the bathtub, and they kind of turned the two sisters and kind of turned and looked at each other at the same time. Um just the timing of it, I don't know. I just really liked how that looked.

SPEAKER_03

I think I know what you're talking about, yeah. Yeah, I think this I think honestly the strongest part, like I like the relationship between the kids a lot.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. Did you catch that the little ones? Um, what did she call that doll's head on a spear?

SPEAKER_03

Staphany. Staphany, that's hilarious.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, so I looked up that reference, and it's just like a super obscure reference. Like in the first two, there's like a dagger with a skull handle. Oh, really? And so that's like supposed to like be like that's cool. A reference to that. But I was like, that's a stretch. That's cool.

SPEAKER_03

Um, I like the main character a lot, actually. I think sh I thought she was the strongest part of it. Um I did think she was strong. You like the setting? No, I did the setting a lot. Yeah. And I really thought it was super clever to have. Like, here's the thing. When I when they first showed like the kid being a DJ or whatever, I was like, this is such a fucking like 2023 movie of what's what do kids think is cool? DJing. But then to have like then it makes sense for him to find like records and be interested in like hearing maybe I can sample off these records. Let me play them. I thought that was cool. Here's my thing with that though.

SPEAKER_01

Here's my thing with that. Who I mean, like back in the day, was this like people had tape recorders to record notes and shit. But was that ever a thing where people were like, let me record my notes on a record?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, uh, I'm sure. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Uh historians, let us know.

SPEAKER_03

Whoever fucking recorded, tape recorders. The I mean, there was a time when all you could do is record on vinyl.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but like, was it ever but it's not like that is an easy process and like everybody has a vinyl recorder at home, so you're not like just doing free form recording on your vinyl, like true, you know, you're taking notes of it.

SPEAKER_03

But if you're a scientist, I'm giving this movie too way too much credit. But if you're like a scientist and you found this thing and you want to like record it, like you're gonna you're gonna get the funding or whatever to use or use the equipment that allows you to do that, you know.

SPEAKER_01

But okay, who's the dumb fuck that discovers how this what is it? The nec necronom I can never say it, neither can you. Like, discovers it and is like these horrible things happen. Here's what you have to chant to bring the dead to life, and I'm gonna record it so anybody who unknowingly plays it now on this very easy vinyl recording I made can release this demon possession into the world.

SPEAKER_03

Every time I think about like well, they clearly at the time of recording this, unleash the demon. Did they get it back in the box? You know what I mean? Like is they're saying it out loud, so the demon is gonna be resurrected right then at that moment.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but that they obviously did get it back in though, because I I actually did like how once the the earthquake happens and they get into that bank vault, how it's like uh all the crosses and like all the like shit to like keep the demon in there. Yeah, I agree, but also that kid going into that bank hole.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Chloe goes, Why would you do that? That's not real. Actually, I guess kids are pretty dumb. That made me laugh. I go in it. You would. I would not. There is no weapon white. If I saw money in there, well, you don't know. Maybe there is money in there. I'm not going in. Right right after an earthquake. Let's not have it. All right, I'll go in.

SPEAKER_03

Aftershock's I'll be like, yeah, there's no money in here. Don't worry. No one ever come in here. It's creepy and dangerous. And then I'll just take all the money.

SPEAKER_01

There, you go for it.

SPEAKER_03

What did you think about the book of the dead? The look of it. I was I was very upset there was no face on it.

SPEAKER_01

I literally wrote, wish the book looked the same film to film. I did too. Why do we keep chanting? Is there multiple books?

SPEAKER_03

I did notice that this chant didn't have uh NAS full raw to I think that one of the cool like I don't know, I felt like they were trying to do there's a there's a lot more Sam Raimi like camera moves and stuff in this movie, but they're like the light version. It's like there's like a couple POV shots and stuff like that, especially like when they look into the door uh people and stuff like that. Like they're clearly inspired by Sam Raimi, right? But like they never ever even get close to that type of creativity. So it's almost like why even why even do this?

SPEAKER_01

Also, would you consider this? Like, I I was wrote down like how it was kind of like a really weird and abrupt departure to go from Army of Darkness to this one, and technically there's a movie in between, but like that one's a reboot. Is this another reboot? Is this a sequel to that one? Like, what would you consider this one? Or does this one take off after the original three?

SPEAKER_03

Like well, it's when I was reading a little bit about the history of of this movie, and originally there was plans to do Army of Darkness 2 and this remake sequel, and then at some point merge the two into like one timeline type situation.

SPEAKER_01

That would have been cool.

SPEAKER_03

And they ended up doing not Army of Darkness, but they ended up doing the show instead, and then they just kind of like dropped that sort of margarine, but who knows? Maybe they will merge it at some point. But I think at this point it's so like inconsistent with the look of like the book and the style of it, and I don't know, like I don't know if that would work or even try. But to me, this was to I I watch this as if this was a brand new another remake. Exactly. Yeah, but again, like I it it even if it is related to the first remake, like it's so disconnected from it, it's like who cares?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, there's just a whole lot of filler in between where we left it at a cabin and how it got to this vault below the Los Angeles apartment.

SPEAKER_03

So maybe there's more than one book.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, did you catch when they were in the garage during that earthquake that the pizza was Henrietta's pizza?

SPEAKER_03

No, but that's awesome.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Also, um, because you know it was Sam Raimi's brother who played like Possessed Henrietta and two. Um when they're in the apartment and those two kids come to the door, the younger one, I want to look this up because I was like, that kid looks like a Raimi. I don't know if it's Sam Raimi's kid, I don't know if it's his brother's kid, but it Just like looks like a mini version of the two of them. So I was curious if that was maybe it is.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

But I would I don't know. The m like I I like these. Here's the thing. When I saw the trailer I was like, oh that's cool. Like these kids are gonna have to like defend off their mother. That's like a very interesting drama, right?

SPEAKER_01

Like that that's like there's yeah, it's horrible, and you don't get the emotion in it. Like with any of them, like the the aunt is sad when Dan gets it, but like the teenage daughter, what was her name? Bridget before him. Nobody was crying at that. Nobody's crying at the mom. It's just very like inconsistent in like its emotional tone.

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah, I think I think to me, when I'm watching that trailer, I'm thinking, oh, the main drama in this movie is gonna be like, oh, we have to like run from our mother, and and then the mother's gonna be the whole like you know, changing her appearance to be like normal again, like it's just me, no more, and then back to being crazy.

SPEAKER_01

Like it literally feels like a remake to me of the original conjuring more than it does an Evil Dead movie when the mom gets possessed.

SPEAKER_03

But my point is like they don't you're right, they don't feel upset at all about their mom being. I mean, Holly has that one line where she's like, I guess my mom's really dead, or something like that. Yeah, I know you're not my caller Holly, by the way, but I don't know what her actual name was, but Holly Wheeler from uh Stranger Things. Um but yeah, it's just like Go ahead, sorry, go ahead. I was gonna say, like, none of the family dynamics really work for me, except for the aunt and the the youngest uh well that's not true, the Anna and all the kids, but I just they're just not that upset with this what's going on. They don't even seem that shocked. Like they don't like she's she's you know the one teenager's like jumping on top of Dan and like trying to stab, and it's just like or does stab him and like like that's it, they don't care. I don't know, it's just very bizarre that no one really cares that this is happening.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's definitely missing that emotional beat for sure.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's weird. And again, there's no rules to this thing, and that's what I guess that's where I'm following. If it's if you're not gonna make the movie super scary and you're not gonna make the movie super fun and funny, like then the genericness of it being like, oh, you just get possessed into these crazy things that just wants to kill you for no reason, it's boring. That's boring to me.

SPEAKER_01

Like I will the one thing that really I enjoyed um the mom's possession, like the you know, the elevator cables play on the vines, the tree, yeah, sure. That that worked for me. That was fun. Um, but I thought what that did so well, more than making the possession scary or the cables scary, was making that like sensation of falling in an elevator fear like that was like that was like the moment that came in the heebie jeebies.

SPEAKER_03

I'm scared of elevators, so that was like yeah. Oh really? I didn't know that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah. It did a good job of playing on those fears, I thought they shot that really well.

SPEAKER_03

I agree. I I thought when that that tree I call it the tree moment, but you're right, it's just vines, really.

SPEAKER_01

But um But also, why was she in the elevator after she just yelled at her kids to not go in the elevator after an earthquake?

SPEAKER_03

Good question. I don't remember if there was an actual reason. Um I also like the idea that there's like other tenants, but they don't do anything interesting with them. Like to me, it'd be like, what if the mom became normal and she was faking it? Oh, I was dying laughing.

SPEAKER_01

I'm so glad you said this because this is my next quote written from Chloe, was when they take it to the other tenants, and Chloe goes, Thanks for bringing this possessed evil demon to my apartment, bitch. She was on a roll last night. Too much Love Island. That's funny.

SPEAKER_03

It's rubbing off. Yep. Um, but yeah, I feel like you can do something interesting with that. Like you could have a neighbor come by to check on them and then actually be possessed or something. I don't know. Like, there's so much you can do, but they they sort of just like finish them off pretty quickly, and then they don't come back till towards the end of the movie in any meaningful way.

SPEAKER_01

Remind see tell me if you can remind me what this shot is. I wrote I shot through back. Bank back, eye shot through there was clearly.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, there's an eye, there's an eye, an homage to the eye. Yeah. I can't remember what the shot was. Not as cool as it was. So, like, what's the point? Here's my thing. Like, I get that they're doing these Easter egg things, like, oh, we should like pay homage to like the famous eye shot, but it's like, why do that? You're just you're you're diluting your film by like making like a very lame version of something that is very well known.

SPEAKER_01

So I kind of disagree with you there, because I think like films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer with like their latest reboots, people are like, oh, they're nostalgia baiting and da-da-da-da-da. I actually think these were like sub more subtle nods in it that you just get if you're a Sam Raimi fan who's just watched all these movies and talked about them. I don't think it's as on the nose as like more modern reboots.

SPEAKER_03

I guess I'm just like sick of that. Like, I'm sick of watching a movie and then like there being so many Easter eggs in it. Like, it takes me out of the movie now. Like, why can't you just do something memorable that's new? Like, why do I have to like why are you reminding me of all the cool shit that happened in the other movies that was way better than this movie? Like, you shouldn't be doing that.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and the thing is like, um, if you can't have both. Like, you either want to do something that really like pays homage to what came before, and then you have to hit those same notes of comedy and fun and like whatever. And if you're deciding I'm gonna make this serious, I'm gonna play it completely differently, then going back and reminding us of cool shit in the old one is like this isn't like nothing like that movie.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. I think like if you're gonna make an Evil Dead movie in 2026, like look forward, not backwards.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like, look, what are you what are you doing now that's different than every other horror movie that's coming out right now?

SPEAKER_01

I did really enjoy the fish eye shot through the uh door uh I did like that, yeah. Keep hole at where it's like you see people coming on and off screen and like all that shit kind of happening through it. That one was fun. I like that shot a lot.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I agree. That was a cool shot. I mean, there's cool shots in this movie. Like the movie looks really cool, like it looks good overall. I mean, clearly it's a budget movie. Um, but again, like I don't know maybe it was just me. Maybe you know, fans chime in and let us know. But like I didn't feel an ounce of terror this entire thing. I wasn't grossed out, I wasn't nothing. I felt nothing.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't feel much either. Um, but I did think like the the sister coming out of the room in the blanket and kind of standing in the hallway with the blanket over her. That was kind of creepy. It had moments that were like, oh, that's creepy, but like literally no like actual feelings connected to it at all. Fears.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, like on the page, I bet you it's like, oh, this is gonna be like even when they're all in the hallway at the end and they're in the elevator the the two remaining survivors are in the elevator, and and they all start to like come back to life and like come into the hallway, they're all gonna attack now, right? Like you have the two siblings, and then you have the mom lying on the ground and like all the neighbors like awakening. I'm like, oh, on paper, this I should be like, oh shit, this is a moment that's happening right now. Like, this is crazy. But I but I it was like they didn't even try to like make it a real moment, they just relied on being safe.

SPEAKER_01

It kind of felt like um a movie version of a video game.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. People keep saying that like modern movies feel like the movies you people are watching in movies, like the fake movies people watch in movies, and this is like to me, sort of like that, where it's where it's just it looks and feels like a movie, sort of or no, it looks like a movie, it sounds like a movie, but it doesn't feel like a movie in a weird way. Like it I don't feel anything from it. I don't feel like relieved when they're okay at the end. I don't feel sad when bad shit happens to them, I don't feel scared when scary shit's happening. Like, I don't care at all. This is like giving me an appetizer of food that's just like crackers.

SPEAKER_01

It's funny you said that because literally I was just like, maybe I'm just not in the in like the scary movie mood last night, but I like felt like just like totally numbed out watching it.

SPEAKER_03

That's exactly exact that's exactly how I was feeling the whole time. And I'm glad you said that because I was like, Am I just jaded now? Like, would this is this scary to other people? Or like, am I or is this movie just not good? Yeah, you know what I mean? Like it looks good. I think that's where we get tripped up. Like it it doesn't look visually bad. I can see why people would give it good reviews, and it's not like I was bored. I mean, I was kind of bored watching it, but in a theater setting, maybe not. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Like it's it's yeah, I feel like I could be more forgiving of it in a theater setting, but yeah, it's like like why do I give a fuck? Like, I like Exactly, like yeah, I watched it, cool, like it was fine. I'm probably never gonna watch it again. Yeah, the mom was creepy, she did a great job. That actress great, but yeah, why do I care?

SPEAKER_03

You know, and even they should they you know they give her this like oh you're pregnant, Aunt, whatever her name was. No, yeah, like it's like who cares? I don't care about it. Yeah, like the opening shot is like her in the bathroom in some like club, right? Like taking a pregnancy test some for some reason and she can't wait till she gets home to do that. Like, what you know what I mean? Like it's very like I they're trying to make me care about this person, I just don't.

SPEAKER_00

But it's like they're they're they're cheap.

SPEAKER_01

It's they're cheap tactics, it's not character development, it's like, oh, let's make her pregnant to have an emotional tie. Oh, let's make the sisters have a rift to have emotions, and it's like you you can't just toss those things in and be like, oh, we got a family rift and we've got a pregnancy, and those are the ingredients we need for an emotional salad. Like, doesn't work like that.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. And and it maybe it's unfair to compare it to like hereditary, where like that movie is such about like that specific trauma that happened to all of them. Do you know what I mean? Where like it feels more realistic, you care more, it's more, it's harder to watch, you know, because it's such a tragedy. And this one, it's just like, yeah, our dad left us, and we haven't talked in a while, and I'm pregnant now. Like, it's just like this is so like AI wrote this movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, let's just make a bunch of bad things happen to these people so we care about them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. And then let's reveal it in really horrible exposition-heavy dialogue.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um what'd you think of when she was chanting, Dead by Dawn, Dead by Dawn?

SPEAKER_03

I mean, again, it's uh yeah, that's cool, but it should, it shouldn't just feel like you're winking at me. Do you know what I mean? Like the movie shouldn't feel like, remember this line? And it should have its own. Think about it, like, think of it in a way of like, how can we get this line in that's actually like new and fresh and interesting and doesn't feel like just a callback to have one, just to have one. Like, like maybe maybe it's in the book and she reads it, something like about Dead by Da. Like, like maybe it's time to like look at this book, look at these possessed people, and figure out what the rules are for the supernatural thing. Like, what is it? Like, what are its weaknesses? Maybe it has to be.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, here's the thing if you're go getting out of Sam Raimi's just fun, silly world and you're sitting down and you're making this a serious film, then you need to ground it in rules. And the it still doesn't have rules.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like I can forgive Sam Raimi, but I can't forgive this one for that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, because Sam Raimi is trying to entertain in a very specific way. He's like making these little like vignettes of scenes that are fun. This it's like it feels like you just walked into like a very cheap haunted house and you're walking around, there's scary things everywhere. There's like a chainsaw guy for some reason, because that's like scary looking, and there's like thunder happening, and you're just like walking through it for the thrill of walking through this like creepy thing, and then you come out the other end, you're like, Oh, that was fun, and then just move on with your life. There's nothing in this that makes it engaging, really. You're just do you know what I mean? Like, do something with the book, do something with the book. Maybe destroy the book is the way to get rid of them. Like, you know, like some rule, anything. Because like, even at the end, they get out, they like they they disintegrated in that machine, which was dope as fuck, I will say.

SPEAKER_01

And then what'd you think of a morphing into one like creature?

SPEAKER_03

I I gotta say, I was like, at least they're trying something new here. Like, like it looks it looked cool. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Like, you've got this image in my head now, though, of like imagining like sitting in like a viewing room for the first showing, and like Sam Marimi sitting in there as a producer, and Lee Cronin keeps like looking at him like, Did you catch that? Did you catch that? There's the chainsaw, there's the boomstick. Oh, Henrietta's pizza, did you catch that?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, you're right. There is you're right. They do have the the shotgun. I remember thinking in my head, oh, the boomsticks, the boomstick is here now because the shotgun showed up and there was a shot of a chainsaw at some point. Where was that?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, the chainsaw was uh like went through the mom's face, didn't it? They were gonna chainsaw little Holly Wheeler and then mama mama got the chainsaw instead.

SPEAKER_03

I here's the thing, like I'm you know, it's easy for me to be like, I would have done it this way or whatever, but like why like waiting to show the chainsaw at the end of the movie is such a purposeful thing to do, like a punchline. Like, why not have them have the chainsaw the whole time? Yeah, and like that's their main weapon to fight off the why do we have to wait till the last two seconds of the movie to like remember the chainsaw? Here it is, it's the final blow. It's like okay, this is so this is so const like scripted and constructed in such a obvious way.

SPEAKER_01

It's very contrived.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. They're contrived in the way that they're like giving you callbacks. What if we have a chainsaw's weapon? Well, we can't show that till the very end because that will make people cheer. You know what I mean? It's like, why? Why not have it like right away if there'd be a chainsaw? Yeah. Do something interesting.

SPEAKER_01

It was like it feels like you had like a kind of weak script to start with, and then went, okay, here's our story. Now, every three scenes, where can we pepper in a reference to the older films?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I mean, in a lot of ways, it followed like the even the template of the original pretty closely, I felt like the way that everything was.

SPEAKER_01

But it just felt like all these like nods to the older films, they didn't do anything to move the story along. They were there just to just to be there.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It makes me sort of very like hesitant to watch this new one, or or it sort of kills that excitement having seen this now, which I hadn't seen before. Yeah. Of like, is because I've seen the trailer, I know it's like a different family, and like I don't know, they're like in a house somewhere. Um maybe there is a master plan and we're just we don't haven't seen it yet. Like maybe it's evolved since this movie came out.

SPEAKER_01

It feels like though the the story now is just the demons on the loose, so like it can be an anthology of possession stories.

SPEAKER_03

But does that mean the book won't be in this movie? Like, I feel like that's they're gonna have the book in this movie. You know?

SPEAKER_01

That's true. What are these? Like multiple copies of this book. Huh. I'm I'm I'm curious. I think seeing it in theaters will maybe make it more enjoyable to get into, or maybe not. Who knows?

SPEAKER_03

I I'm I'm I'm confused because I and again I haven't done a lot of read- I don't like to look at like what people say about the movie before I watch it. I don't like my opinion uh like diluted in any way, but I kind of had the feeling when this came out, like, oh, everyone's saying this one's really good. This is a really cool movie, and I'm just do horror fans like this movie? Let us know in the comments. Like I to me, this is like someone who doesn't make horror movies made a horror movie.

SPEAKER_01

And it's and yet now all he's making is horror movies. But I also heard like the mummy wasn't very good.

SPEAKER_03

It seems like very studio, like they're studio movies. It feels like like make this movie for us, Lee Cronin, and we'll pay you a lot of money. You know what I mean? Like, just make sure it looks like I couldn't I can't criticize the movie as far as like if you saw dailies of this movie, you'd be like, that looks great. The blood looks great. Yeah, the makeup looks great, the lighting looks great, the framing looks great, but it's so soulless, the the actual completed package of it. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. What do you think of um because I was reading like how much blood he used, and as I was watching it, and I was like, it doesn't really seem like there's that much blood um until the elevator scene when it's like filling up with all the fake blood, and then they like do like the shining elevator doors.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. I mean, I liked it when it was happening, but again, like I feel like you could have made this such a better scene. Do you know what I mean? Like, it seems like he just looked at the page, okay, we just gotta fill this thing with water, and then they'll have to come out and fall. Like, it wasn't suspenseful while it was filling up. Like, I didn't worry about them drowning. And I feel like you give that to Steven Spielberg back in the day, he would have made that whole sequence, like this really memorable sequence.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, did you ever see the movie Um Poseidon, the remake of the Poseidon adventure with uh what Josh Lucas and the chick from the real world, and when her little kid gets stuck in that part that's like filling up with water? Yeah, that is tense and that is suspenseful, and you know they're not gonna kill that kid, but you can't like not freaking worry about him. In this, not once are you worried that anything is gonna happen to that little girl, despite seeing both her siblings be possessed and kind of killed, and like you just don't ever worry.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, and there was a point where I was like, maybe they'll just kill one of the siblings. Like, I don't I I was like, I I doubt they'll kill all these siblings or whatever, but then they ended up basically doing that, and I was like, Oh, okay, I guess what's the point of this? And there's no I don't know, yeah, you're right. Like, it's just like I don't care. The kills aren't even that cool. It's crap.

SPEAKER_01

And then what's even funnier is like, so this all happens, right? And then we realize that some chick who lives in the same building is just coming down to her car, and now the demons got her, but it's like, okay, all this shit was going on in this building, the earthquake, the fucking gunshots, and all the like screaming and all this bullshit and wood chipping, and she's just like, I'm heading out to my lake house.

SPEAKER_03

I know that conversation where she's on the phone, where she's like, Yeah, it rained really hard last night. I I slept so hard, whatever it was.

SPEAKER_01

Stupid.

SPEAKER_03

And then she she goes down the stairs that you weren't able to go down the stairs before, remember? Because they tried to go down the stairs. Oh, we can't it's like there's not there's no stairs there, but all of a sudden, magically now there are stairs there. Yeah. Just to have this scene where like it's gonna go back to the beginning of the movie. I was like, this is so unnecessary.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you could have completely taken her out of it and just like had like a shot of like we are well established now that those through the woods shots are that possession demon thing, whatever the fuck it is, taking over. So we could we could know it had been released without needing a callback to the original characters to put that together. But then bringing her in and having that like stupid, like, I lived in this building and I don't have any idea of any of the shit that just happened last night, including a massive earthquake that opened up the ground below us.

SPEAKER_03

And at what point does she become possessed? Like, is she possessed when she's picking up her friends already, or is she get not get possessed when she's at the thing?

SPEAKER_01

Like she's she's possessed in the garage, and then it's like I don't remember. Like, when in any of these other movies is the demon like, well, I'm gonna possess this body, but before I start more shit, we're gonna drive it out to a lake house first. Let's go pick my boyfriend up, let's get my sister.

SPEAKER_03

Like, like, what is that? The other thing is in the I'm pretty sure in the Rainy movies, and maybe I'm wrong, is like during the daytime, nothing happens.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

So I which the whole opening scene is during that that daytime, right? Like, yeah, like was because he gets possessed and then he gets up and the sun like hits him and he and the and he's unpossessed. Ash, ash, and evil dead too. And he's fine, and then he's like he goes back to the house, whatever. But the whole idea is like dead by dawn. We gotta kill you before it's it's it's just like what are the fucking rules?

SPEAKER_01

What I need I need the rules. I can suspend disbelief, but give me the fucking rules.

SPEAKER_03

That would make it more interesting. Yeah. Any rule. That's why the conjuring sort of the especially the first conjuring works, is because like they're fighting this very like there's rules to the way that they're doing it. The we're there's rules to the way that they're trying to hunt the the spirit, right, in the house. And they set up all these cameras everywhere and these like little little booby traps and shit like that. Like in this movie, it's just like I'm possessed, and now you're possessed. Also, why can't you just possess everyone at the same time? Like, why do you have to is it one at a time, but then everyone's possessed? Why not just possess the people you're trying to kill? Like, none of this makes any sense. I guess they have to die first, but yeah, it's still not explained.

SPEAKER_01

Also, when like the sisters under the blanket and then like kind of stands up, and um at the same time the records talking about like the past with like I buried them and they all came back. All that did was make me miss the goofy, like chick coming out of the ground in two that's like a basically like a Barbie body with a clay head like dancing around and shit. I was like, Yeah, like it it made me more it called to mind that I was disappointed that this was not that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it really highlights the specialness of that movie. Even like, because I think in that movie too, when he's in the basement, they lock him in the basement and then they're playing that recording, it's like I buried her in the basement, right? And then smash cuts to it coming out of the ground, and it's just like that's funny, that's fun. There's a joke there that's curated that way, so it makes the audience like enjoy themselves. And this one, it's like you're right, it's just like that doesn't exist. Like you could have done that scene, you could have done that scene in a scary way. You could have been like, I buried them, but they came. Back and then have like our hand. I don't know, like I'm just thinking off the top of my head, but like you could have done something interesting there.

SPEAKER_01

It's just like if you're gonna take a fun franchise like this, um, where you can get away with all this stuff because it is like kind of tongue in cheek, and you're like, I want to take this and I want to make it serious, then you really need to establish your world, establish your rules, uh, figure out the fucking point, and like you need a really solid script. Otherwise, it's just like well this why? Like you just slapped this name on it, and then it's like I'm surprised Sam Raimi's a producer on it, honestly. And I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I think again, like this was supposed to be it's like straight to streaming. I think he was like, Sure, whatever they paid us for this movie, just like let's make something that's cheap and and fun and like in the same vein as that, but then it's like now even when you do that though, like you're you're also you're putting it against these legacy things. So you're right, it is sort of weird that he I mean maybe he likes the movie. I I I don't know, but um, it is surprising to me that because it also kind of tells me like, and I could be wrong, but it kind of tells me like the filmmakers and even the writer of this movie aren't necessarily like fans of the original movies, and so like I think something's lost there.

SPEAKER_01

If you're not a true fan of that, like you then the translation from for the remake sort of kind of like doesn't get fully transitioned in a way, but it's interesting, you know, like talking like last week I was on with Robert, and he was like talking about how he like loves the reboots, and now I'm like, I kind of wish I had seen these before I talked to him, so I could have been like, tell me what it is about them that you like, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Again, like I that and that's I think for horror fans when they're so in love with something, like superficially, it it feels, I guess, sort of like Evil Dead in a way, it feels like a more graphic grounded version of Evil Dead, even though it's not. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, so it's easy. I don't know. I think we're starved for it. I think we want Army of Darkness 2 so bad that we're ready to go to the movies and be scared.

SPEAKER_01

But again, like this is why I think Scream is the most successful franchise of all horror franchises, because like, yes, six kind of gets a little bit different in tone from the rest, but it always every single film fits into the same world.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like, what other franchise does that?

SPEAKER_03

There's an identity there that's specific that you can't break. There's also like reoccurring characters that even when they are doing callbacks, it's like they've made it, they they've done it in a way where it feels like sort of organic, right?

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

With like getting certain characters to come back, like Dewey being broken in a trailer and them going to get like ask for his help, like stuff like that. Like that's that's clever. That's not the most original writing in the world, but it's like it's better than what we're getting in these movies.

SPEAKER_01

Not the most original story writing, but that line, well, maybe you're the killer because that cut deep was one of the best lines in the entire franchise.

SPEAKER_03

In any horror movie, yeah. Um, yeah, again, I I think if you're not gonna find a way to make this movie feel fresh and new, and you're not gonna make it like fun like it used to be, like a comedy, like then this movie has zero identity, and it's just just a generic horror movie.

SPEAKER_01

I wonder if Sam Raimi as a producer isn't actually like a Sam Raimi sign-off, and the rights are owned by the studio, and because he's the creator, he has to have some sort of credit uh with the sale of like the rights or whatever, but like I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I I mean obviously he wants to get paid, I understand that. But I also think he's someone who probably saw this this young filmmaker and was like, oh, make it make us an evil. Like, I like like he I think he is trying to help other filmmakers in a way. Like, I don't think he's just like like I I would I don't think they set out to make a bad movie. I and I I'm I'm sure he was supportive to this kid. You know what I mean? Like it's different when you're that much older and you're trying to bring up somebody else and champion them and whatever. I don't know the whole dynamics of it.

SPEAKER_01

It's officially decided that um these are not evil dead movies moving forward, and that the sequel to Army of Darkness is actually Evil Dead Planet Terror by Robert Rodriguez. That fits in the fucking franchise.

SPEAKER_03

That's so funny. We gotta maybe we'll watch the series at some point.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I kind of want to know. Now I don't know. I just like I in no way expected that I was gonna have so much fun with the first three. But even having not seen them before, you get the nostalgia because you get like all the practical filmmaking effects from our childhood that just like take you back. This is just not special.

SPEAKER_03

But you're also surprised, right? Like you're watching these scenes, you're gonna be like, what the fuck? I would like you're not really expecting what's happening to be happening in those movies. Like, I was thinking, like, say if you wanted to make it like super scary, like, let's take the things that happened in the funny version, the fun version, and make those moments super scary. Like, imagine what you could do with like a hand possession. Like, in the if that how do you make that not goofy? How do you make that actually scary? Yeah, you know what I mean? How do you make that seem now? I gotta cut off my hand, hand be like actually suspenseful, intense instead of like a comedic. Like you could do something there. Like you could, if you're gonna do a callback over the hand possession, like do it for real and have the hand like I don't know, I don't again, I'm not a filmmaker, but like make it scary or serious or something. Do something.

SPEAKER_01

Which they like they did that in the reboot, they had her hand get possessed and they made it serious, remember? Yeah, his girlfriend had to cut off her arm with the like turkey carver.

SPEAKER_03

But was it doing anything or was it just like it was like dying? I don't think it was doing anything. Yeah, yeah, maybe. I don't know. I I mean I mean I'm on I'm in total agreement with you. I just I I'm I'm I'm very happy that you saw those movies for the first time and were like have an appreciation for them, right? Like and now seeing the verse the shitty version of that movie, you almost have even a better appreciation for it, right? Because then once you see it done really like generically, you're like, like what like I don't think Evil Dead is a name brand. It's not Scream, it's not Halloween, it's not Texas Chains Local Con. It is not like if I said Evil Dead, I don't think well, I think horror fans maybe, but like the your normal person, I don't think they're gonna be like, yeah, Evil Dead. I know that.

SPEAKER_01

I had Evil Dead and Living Dead mixed up forever. I didn't know that they were different different things until embarrassingly recently.

SPEAKER_03

No, I mean that's but that's what I'm saying. I think so, like I can't tell if they're the studio thinks that this is some sort of like name IP that they can make a lot of money off of. But I think if they want to do that, then they really have to think about how do we make how do we bring this franchise into the 21st century in an actual meaningful way and not just make some generic movie that says, well, Evil Dead has a lot of blood in it, so let's put as much blood as possible in that elevator. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

Like, like think about So what are your what are your expectations? Do you think this next one's gonna fall short?

SPEAKER_03

Now I do, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I again like maybe it was hyped up too much, but I heard really good things about this one, and so I was excited for it. My only hope is maybe that they end up giving us some sort of rules in this new movie. I I gotta say the trailer did I didn't even like the trailer. I was like, this movie doesn't do anything for me.

SPEAKER_00

Like Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, obviously I'm gonna see it I think it comes out this weekend, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we gotta go see it this week.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, but um I don't know, I could be I'm I'm open-minded. Like, yeah, I'm not gonna go in there like, oh, this is gonna suck.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I'll I'll see it and give it a chance, but hopefully going in there expecting it to suck will actually like leave us an opportunity to come out pleasantly surprised.

SPEAKER_03

Exactly. I it kind of reminds me of like the days when you'd go into the VA, like the video store, like Blockbuster or something, and you would see like all of the sequels that never did jack shit for like famous horror movies that were like either straight to DVD or just like totally bombed at the box office, and there'd be like seven of them, and you'd be like, I'm never watching these. Like, I feel like that's where we're at with the Evil Dead movies. It's like we're getting all of like the ones that are just like so uninteresting, and like no one really cares about making them. No one really cares about maybe they care about watching them a little bit, but not you know, not your mom and dad, they're not gonna go see it, you know. Yeah, I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Fair.

SPEAKER_03

Do we know if the same characters are in this movie at all?

SPEAKER_01

I don't think they are. I think it's a totally new storyline, but maybe not, who knows? I I don't know much about it. I saw the trailer one time and thought, ooh. Um, and I don't really want to know anything about it going in. Like, I want to go in being like, I'm not expecting much, and hopefully I'll be surprised.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. It's also it's funny. We we do these reviews where we we review all the movies at once. And I feel like it also it like it makes you more harsh towards the movies because you're seeing them back to back, right? So it's like we just came off of watching Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. If it had been a year since we'd seen those movies, maybe we'd have slightly different opinion. But being able to see it like that, like even when we're doing Scream, I felt like I'm seeing these back to back. So everything that I don't think is living up is super apparent.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. I mean, I've I've loved every single Scream movie that ever came out, seen it in theaters multiple times, uh, bought it the day it came out, like, but even watching them back to back, it was like, oh, I see all the problems I have with five, I see all the problems I have with six, which before I never would have expected to rank so low for me until doing this like back-to-back review.

SPEAKER_03

And there's also like an element of like, I'm gonna forgive the movie a little bit more because it's been so I'm just excited for seeing Scream. Like, to me, it's like Scream 4. Like, I was I was like, I don't care that this opening's stupid. Do you know what I mean? Like, I mean, like I love Scream, and it's been 10 years since I've seen a Scream movie, so this is dope. I think you kind of lose that when you watch them all back to back like this. Anyway, anyway, final thoughts. It was fine. Final thoughts, it was fine, it had a better plot.

SPEAKER_01

It was fine, it had a more cohesive plot than Hokum, but uh That's true, but not it was fine. I don't know. I it what it was fine. That's all I had to do.

SPEAKER_03

There's moments like I like the end a lot. I did sort of like the uh the sort of morphed people after her. I thought that was sort of I thought it looked real, I thought it looked good. Yeah, all the makeup was great.

SPEAKER_01

Oh god, but do you remember what's I know you know what scene in that that I was like stupid fucking scene? The scene that I always hate where they get out of the car and they're just hiding on the side of the car with the creature on top of it. Like you can just hide right there and they're not gonna fucking know.

SPEAKER_03

Stupid. I didn't see its eyes. Maybe it didn't have any.

SPEAKER_01

It had six eyes.

SPEAKER_00

Three heads, six eyes.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Yeah, I don't know. Um I would give this like a C minus. That's generous.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like this movie has nothing going for it, but it's also like better acted, I guess, than a lot of horror movies. Yeah. See what I mean? Like But I I'll never watch this movie again unless it's on TV and someone else chose it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, fair. Well, anyway, that's it. Should we wrap this one up?

SPEAKER_03

Well, that's all we got to say about Evil Dead Rise, and now all the Evil Dead fans are gonna come after us. Give us your thoughts, give us your comments at slasher bash underscore podcast on Instagram.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. We are very big on responding, so all right. Well, we don't have a one uh one-liner for this, so are we we killing it?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, let's just kill let's just go get 'em, cuz.

SPEAKER_01

Alright. Ready? Go get 'em, cuz. Get him, cuz. I wasn't expecting the slow-mo.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I don't know, because there's a delay when I talk like that. There's no way to do it. Let's just say it. All right. Go get him, cuz.

SPEAKER_01

Go get 'em, cuz.

SPEAKER_03

Perfect.
