SPEAKER_00

Let's do this, bitch. What's up, everybody? Welcome to Slasher Bash the podcast. The podcast where two friends talk all things horror. I'm one of your hosts, Benjamin. I'm here with my co-host Madison. And we are here. What's up? And we are here today to talk about Evil Dead Burn. Came out this weekend.

SPEAKER_02

I've been dying to talk to you about this movie.

SPEAKER_00

I do want to say that I'm in my basement right now, which I guess is appropriate, but there might be some weird noises.

SPEAKER_02

If you live anywhere in America, you also might be experiencing a heat wave. And somebody like me who doesn't have AC might be having some shit running in your background. So if we don't sound natural today or you hear some Yeah, there's a lot of noises.

SPEAKER_00

There's a lot of noises happening, a lot of heat happening. Um are you sweating?

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god, yeah. Can you see my pits?

SPEAKER_00

Are you burning?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. I am evil dead burning.

SPEAKER_00

Evil Dead Burning?

SPEAKER_02

I am Evil Dead Burning.

SPEAKER_00

Nice. Um, should we just jump into this? I don't know. I don't have a lot of updates. Do you have any stats that you want to run? I do, but I yeah, I mean, this movie just came out, Evil Dead Burn. Directed by this is a French dude, Sebastian Van Van Den. I I'm gonna brutch of this. I don't know how I fix this in post. Asshole. You say it then.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. Let me look it up.

SPEAKER_00

Um another, it's funny, like the last Evil Dead movie we reviewed, it was by sort of a a newcomer. This guy is also.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it was like Lee What's his nuts, who had the mummy coming out, and I was like, I don't want to see that movie, I don't want to see a dead kid film. And then I saw Evil Dead Rise, and I was like, Yeah, what's with him and the fucking dead kids?

SPEAKER_00

There's no dead kid in this movie.

SPEAKER_02

No, Evil Dead Rise, not Burn.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, and Rise, right, yeah, right.

SPEAKER_02

Um Lee Cronin, that's his name. But I like I feel like he's an up-and-coming young horror director, and people are like trying to give him clout. Unimpressed. But this Sebastian fellow, whole different story.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Well, before we do that, I just want to say Metacritic score, 55. 55? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Are you fucking kidding me? This is tanking.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I wouldn't say that's tanking. I mean 55.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that's like a D. That's like an F plus.

SPEAKER_00

Technically, that's an F. That's an F plus.

SPEAKER_02

Well, no, it's a mid, it's a perfect F. It's like a mid-grade F.

SPEAKER_00

It's a perfect F. That's my band name. Perfect F. No one's ever said that. Anyway, so okay. I gotta ask you. We've been living in the Evil Dead world for like five weeks now, six weeks, five weeks. What are your thoughts, your initial thoughts, reactions to seeing Evil Dead burn?

SPEAKER_02

I thought if you're going to do a modern scary take on the Evil Dead, yes, this is how you fucking do it. I thought it was fucking great.

SPEAKER_00

High praise.

SPEAKER_02

I yeah. Thought it was great. The whole fucking movie, I was like, holy shit, holy shit, oh fuck, holy shit. I don't ever want to watch it again because of the gore. Ever. But I thought it was great.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And I thought all the nods to the evil dead, like like in the ways that Rise felt like they kept like winking at you, like, Did you catch that? You catch that, you catch that. This was so subtle in so many references.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. I can't wait to get deep into this then.

SPEAKER_02

Did you not like it? Ben, are you gonna ask me when I like it? What did you think, Ben? What did you think about Evil Dead Burn?

SPEAKER_00

I think this will be fun to talk about. I'm also two martinis in, so I think this movie is on par with the last one.

SPEAKER_01

Are you fucking kidding me? Are you out of your fucking mind?

SPEAKER_00

No, not at all.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my god. We the whole last episode, all we talked about is like the numbness we felt.

SPEAKER_00

And I was like, I felt that out of this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I did.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe because you saw it alone. I don't know. But like I was maybe like I had gotten to this point where like this is probably now like the sixth movie I've seen alone in a well, no, I saw it with Chloe, but this is like I'm seeing a lot of horror movies in theaters recently, and not like a lot of them alone. But yeah, like I'm not like really feeling the jumps or anything. And like we talked about it, and I was like, I don't know if I'm gonna jump in horror movies anymore. Like maybe we just watch too many.

SPEAKER_01

Did you jump in this movie?

SPEAKER_02

Um, I did not jump. Chloe jumped, um, but I had to like cover my eyes and look through like fingers many, many times.

SPEAKER_00

It was very gory. I mean, I looked away at some at a lot of points, I will say.

SPEAKER_02

I feel like this is gonna be the first time that you and I have like an actual like serious maybe that's fine.

SPEAKER_00

That makes for good content, so it's all good. I okay. Well, hang on, hang on. So okay, you loved it. You're uh you didn't love it, but you like it. Like it wasn't the last couple.

SPEAKER_02

It wasn't, you know, like the the original three are something so unique and special, and these reboots and remakes that they're doing are not that. So if you're going in for that, no. But out of those three, in terms of something capturing the essence of Evil Dead and bringing in some of the laps again, which like Rise did not make me laugh at all. It didn't make me care about people at all, like none of those things. I felt like this one hit everything the last one was missing and was like so intense, like from the very start. Like the opening was intense. Yes, that fucking car fight scene.

SPEAKER_00

I did like, yeah, I like the opening a lot, to be honest. And we'll get into spoilers here in a second, but I will say, like, I probably would also agree that this movie did a better job. Sorry, that was that was the toilet flushing upstairs.

SPEAKER_02

We don't worry, we can't hear your toilets.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I was talking during it, so I'm sure people heard it. But um, I would yeah, this movie did a a little bit better of a job of actually caring about at least one of the characters, I would say.

SPEAKER_02

I I find it so interesting that you say a little bit better. Because when I watched this, like looking at Evil Dead Rise, I felt like Lee Cronin is this aspiring horror director, and he's gotta make a studio pick so that he can make the picture he wants to make. That's the story I see when I look at the first one. When I look at this one, this Sebastian dude, I see is a massive fan of Sam Raimi and tried to actually really do that justice while also making it his own modern thing. Like there were like I thought his references were so much more subtle, like when there's like the like kind of like breaking through the mirror thing and then going through the walls of the house, and you're in the like spoiler, spoiler, spoiler. I mean, this isn't a plot point.

SPEAKER_00

We're in full spoilers at this point, okay.

SPEAKER_02

But like, like that was so much more subtle than all the winks that Lee Cronin had to offer.

SPEAKER_00

I would agree with that, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And so much more well done.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's better disguised, is what I would say.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because we're still like, I don't know, like we're still not using the chainsaw device until the end. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

Like there's still like a well, what's funny is we never actually use the chainsaw.

SPEAKER_00

I guess that's true, but we see it, right?

SPEAKER_02

We see it, and then it turns out she's got like a different like power tool that she's like, like the like cement drill.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, okay. Well, then let's I yeah, I mean, I I we'll get into what I think the nuance of of my opinion, but let's just start, I guess, at the beginning. I thought the opening scene was really cool.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was intense. I'll say that it was so hard to watch like all those fish lines wrapping around his face, yeah. And then when her head pops out of the water, it was fucking terrifying. Like immediately, it was like this like first three minutes is scarier than anything that happened to Dryce. Yeah, and I like that it picked up at the end of Rise in that way.

SPEAKER_00

When it did it, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So when they're fishing and he's fishing, immediately when he caught that thing, I was like, Oh, it's gonna be the scalped head of the girl from the first one. Yeah. Oh, I didn't even notice that. The possessed girl is the girl that was possessed reading Wuthering Heights in the last one.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, really?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I totally missed that. That's my bad. Well, okay, but why are they looking for this dagger suddenly out of nowhere?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I think the uh the rules of the demons and they're like I they're less.

SPEAKER_00

I still have a I still yeah, I still struggle with these rules thing.

SPEAKER_02

They don't really Well, because there's an obvious change where these demons just possess people and it's funny ha ha and we take over to now the demons want to murder people. That wasn't really a thing before.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, you what do you mean? They always wanted to murder people.

SPEAKER_02

No, they possessed people and then people murdered people. Like they didn't murder the bodies they possessed, but the people around the people who got possessed murdered them. And in this one, the demons are actually killing people part of the time.

SPEAKER_00

But they're killing people in the in the other ones.

SPEAKER_02

Not really, when you think about it.

SPEAKER_00

It's like the sister stabs her brother in the last one.

SPEAKER_02

While possessed.

SPEAKER_00

While possessed.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, but people possessed.

SPEAKER_00

And in the in the remake, in the in the first remake, the the evil dead.

SPEAKER_02

But an actual demon hasn't killed somebody. Like in the in the opening of this, the brother in the car accident is killed by a demon in the opening scene. Not somebody possessed by a demon, a demon.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's it's someone possessed by a demon.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's true. I guess it is that fucking chick. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's someone it's still a possessed person. It's a deade, right? It's a deadite who's possessed, who's killing somebody.

SPEAKER_02

It's a deadite. You're dead, right? You like that?

SPEAKER_00

Totally. I want to talk about what you liked about the movie before I just shit all over this movie. So let's talk about. Let's do let's be positive.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Because I think people, Evil Dead fans out there listening to this, they want to hear the positive stuff.

SPEAKER_02

This is what I liked about it. Um, it definitely had references to the original films that were way more subtle than sorry, my chimes are going off. Let me close my window. Uh way more subtle references than Lee Cronin. Like you nailed it when you were like, I wish it wasn't just like winking at me all the time. Like this one had a million references that weren't a wink. Um, so I appreciated that. I actually liked that in the last one, you know, it was like the sisters are estranged and the husband left, they've got problems, we should feel bad for them. I liked that in this one they subtly did like there's a history of abuse in this family that we don't talk about, and did it in a way where the exposition wasn't on the nose, but it was like very much like what happens when you let abuse go unchecked in a family. Like I thought that was actually like solid character development. I thought it was funny again. Like the second-cause that was funny. Oh my god. I mean, maybe Chloe and I were just in the right mood because nobody else laughed in the theater, but Chloe and I were dying more. Yes. So, first of all, the funeral, when they're like doing the funeral and all the construction's happening, we were like cracking up and nobody else is laughing. And then the fucking grandma, like, we laughed at everything she did. Like when like that whole fight is going on and she's just like slowly going up the stairs in her chair, like we were rolling. And it like even the like there's no explanation or reason for her missing a leg. It's like clearly just so that at some point you can take that leg off and beat somebody with it.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Also, new fear unlocked falling on an open dishwasher.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I've I've always had that fear. I think it came from a movie, actually.

SPEAKER_02

There's some movie where not gonna happen in my house because my knives are down, but my forks are up, so you could get forked and spooned.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Forked and spooned.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, that sounds like a good time.

SPEAKER_02

It's pretty bisexual, honestly.

SPEAKER_00

Um yeah, see, I I think my problem is I I was so exhausted from the just it wasn't enjoyable to watch this family just like hate each other the whole time. And like we talked about in the last review about how like the mellow drama drama parts of it weren't working for me. It didn't work for me in this movie either. I was just like, uh this dad, like this guy is just an asshole. This mom is just into like can somebody can we just have one of these evil dead movies where it's not so just like draining with this like melodramatic like bullshit. And in this one, it was like I just I I got to a point where I was like, I just I want this dad to die in this movie, so I don't have to like listen to him anymore.

SPEAKER_02

It made him such a good villain though, I thought.

SPEAKER_00

I I mean maybe I but I but then there's nothing around it that's like alleviating the sort of drag that he is because everyone's trying to like walk around on eggshells around this dude the whole time, and I'm just like But then I think it builds like really interesting moments, like the car scene where which was like like that scene for me was like incredibly too much.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, this is like so violent and too real, and was like um but then after the fact when the girlfriend's possessed and pushes him down on the dishwasher and he stabs her in the neck with a corkscrew and she's like, You couldn't shoot your dad for killing your girlfriend, but you can stab me. Like that was like such an interesting like not on the nose exposition of like, yeah, this is.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I think it is on the nose. I don't know, I feel like that is on the nose a little bit. Yeah, and I even the the brother who dies, obviously at the very beginning. I was like, the scene is so cliche. Like, this is like such a like argument I've heard a million times in a million different things where it's like an insecure man like belittling his girlfriend who's trying to have a good time, and then like everyone enabled.

SPEAKER_02

Let's talk about his club at this party because it's so fucking fun. Like, you gotta admit the transitions were fucking hilarious. Like from the opening murder to the fucking ass shaking, but then we like get to see the town that this is happening in, and I like turned to Chloe and I was like, what fucking small woodsy like New Hampshire-ish town like this has an ass shaken club like that.

SPEAKER_00

I thought the same thing, yeah. I mean, you're right. Maybe they were very far away from where they grew up. I don't know. Maybe we're just a small town. I don't even know where this movie took place, to be honest.

SPEAKER_02

And I can tell you from my time in the woods, I've never found a club with ass shaking like that, but I liked it.

SPEAKER_00

We were not looking hard enough then.

SPEAKER_02

Apparently not. Just kidding. Should we just open a club called Ass Shakers in the Woods?

SPEAKER_00

That's pretty on the nose. Should we just open a bar called On the Nose?

SPEAKER_02

And then just only serve cocaine.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. An ass shaking. Um, yeah, I don't know. I I I remember being at a point where it's like, I hope this movie starts to get going because I'm sick of I don't like any of these people except for like the lead, the lead girl.

SPEAKER_02

What about baby Rashida? His like girlfriend looks like Rashida Jones. So I just call her. She does.

SPEAKER_00

She was, I mean, she was she was a great villain. I really liked like her acting, her portrayal.

SPEAKER_02

She had the most interesting role of being like a per of a pussy and then like a really antagonistic demon.

SPEAKER_00

She was the best demon there was.

SPEAKER_02

The second you saw grandma though, like we were like, Oh, she's gonna be great when she's a dead eye. Like, you knew that was coming when you saw her. But immediately when I saw her too, I was like, I bet you she's a younger actress in makeup, like you could tell.

SPEAKER_00

Is she? And then I looked up, I was right. Oh, nice. She looks old to me. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that's making it.

SPEAKER_00

She was believable.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, she's like, she's probably like in her late 50s, early 60s, but she ain't like on her death bed. She's not on death's door for sure.

SPEAKER_00

I I don't know. I just I didn't, I wasn't laughing. Maybe because I was by myself. There were there was like one other person that was laughing in the theater. I just thought, like, oh, grandma's accusing, like, accusing her of stealing. Like, this is like I mean, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, I haven't. Like, I I laughed really hard because of how true it is. Like, I remember like my Grammy when she was uh had passing away with dementia, and we were taking her out of the nursing home because she was like on hospice, and at that point she'd gotten to a place where she would put a blanket over her DVDs every night because she thought the staff was trying to steal her DVDs, and then we like took her out. We were like passing one of the nurses, and she goes, You're a rat.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

So I was like, This is kind of what happens at that phase. Like it actually was like played very true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And when you're in those horrible moments in your life, what do you do but laugh?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you're right. I mean, there were I thought there were two specific scenes that stood out to me. One was obviously that one-shot scene I thought was really cool. Um, do you know what I'm talking about?

SPEAKER_01

The bathtub.

SPEAKER_00

No, that was that was the second one. But there's a shot where like she's crawling around the floor, and like the the son is getting attacked by the dad, I think, and she's like crawling from the from the that was the trailer.

SPEAKER_02

That scene was the trailer, the teaser trailer that I saw in front of um Hokum, which is why we started talking about doing this series and seeing it because I had never really watched any of these movies, but I saw that trailer and was like, I didn't realize that I had never seen that.

SPEAKER_00

So I was like, this is cool. This is like one shot. He's like they're trying here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then the scene in the bathtub where like it goes on like onto the wall and onto the ceiling, and then the camera.

SPEAKER_02

And then hangs her. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then the but then the camera goes like back to normal. Like, I was like, that's that's a dope scene. But it just made me wonder like, why didn't they do that more often in this movie? Like, if I it's like, oh, we have these two scenes that are really standout moments.

SPEAKER_02

There was another one like that though, but it was more subtle. It was um when the girlfriend No. Yeah, when the girlfriend first comes in, and there's kind of like the fight going down and it's shot from up above, but the movement is very similar to the fisheye cam of like the one shot I really enjoyed in the last one where people are coming in and out of the scene. I feel like that's kind of become like a signature of Evil Dead movies as like holding a steady cam with the movement moving in and out of the shot, which I think is really fun.

SPEAKER_00

That's cool. I'm glad you like I like I remember seeing those over-the-head shots and being like, I wish we weren't doing that. Over-the-head shots. We're on opposite ends on this one. I that I think that's cool, but I was just I was just bored. I think I I think overall I was bored. I wasn't scared. This is the same shit I had with the last one. I was like, I wasn't scared, I was not interested in the drama at all. It was graphic. I mean, you know, the scene, I guess like on paper, like when the dad's like shooting himself three times in the face or fucked up.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, this is also why did the dog have to be like it was like of course the dog's gonna get killed.

SPEAKER_00

And then we have to watch the dog get killed two more times. Well, at least I mean, at that point, I thought, oh, it's cool to have a demon dog. I was like, Oh, okay, I see this. This is cool.

SPEAKER_02

Like, but it was like that that dinner scene though, and how tense it was, and the dog kept coming and he gets the fork, and you're like, great, now I have to like brace. I know I'm gonna watch the dog get forked and it's gonna be fucked up, and nobody wants to see it. I hate those moments when they're like, let's really fuck people up by being violent to animals that don't deserve it. Hate those moments.

SPEAKER_00

And you know that the reason they were like, well, we need to keep all these people in the house somehow, and they're like, Oh, have a demon dog outside that's like gonna attack them if they leave. But it's just like I don't know. Like, I it didn't do it, they didn't do anything with the dog then. Like, once the dog went to the biggest thing.

SPEAKER_02

What about the mom like choosing to become a demon, like making out what's but but was she?

SPEAKER_00

Here's what I'm talking about. Like, yeah, she was the rules are so confusing because then like she's not.

SPEAKER_02

Some people went instantly and some people didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's like there's two stages to it. It's like you can because even the dad at first was like, I'm fine still somehow, even though I am infected.

SPEAKER_02

You have to cut this out. This cannot go in. But I was dying. Why do you say it? Because I was dying and I won't tell you about this.

SPEAKER_00

But let's talk about that. That what we just cut out of this is like if all it takes is some saliva to it. Like, I'm at the point now, it's like, why don't you just possess everybody in the easiest way?

SPEAKER_02

There's there's still I would like somebody to sit down and watch all of these movies and try to give us some semblance of the rules.

SPEAKER_00

Is that what we're doing? I think that's what we're doing.

SPEAKER_02

Trying to put the rules together. We should do an episode strictly on the rules. Because there's not because sometimes they can come in and sometimes they can't. Like they had the girlfriend had to ask to come in.

SPEAKER_00

But it sounds like once you possess them, you have all of their knowledge anyway. So, like, couldn't they just possess the girl and then be like, oh, now I know where this dagger is?

SPEAKER_02

Like, I one problem that I still have with this is like why do all these fucking people keep finding this curse and then recording the word. That you have to say to get the fucking demons to come out. Like, thank god, like when this girl, the hot French chick, started reading it, and she was like, whatever. And then she's like, nah, fuck this. It's like, why even start? What is wrong with all you fucking people? All you're reading, all you're hearing is this possesses people, this is horrible, hell's open, and everyone's like, Let me read it, let me continue.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's funny. I think they wrote that scene specifically because people are probably saying that often. It's like, why do they keep reading these words out loud? And like, so they have the scene again where she's like, fuck this. But even like I guess it's funny. Like, I didn't realize the opening shot where he's, I guess, calling these things. Or it was confusing. It's like, oh, if you if you unwrap this thing, they're gonna smelt and come back to life or whatever was the sun at that moment. Like, I didn't put that together. Wait, wait, wait.

SPEAKER_01

I'm also what was the unwrapping in the sun?

SPEAKER_00

There's the very the very, very beginning, before we get to the fishing part. I'm pretty sure it was before that.

SPEAKER_02

Well then the kid's like in his attic in the house that he's just like inherited and somehow in five years went from a fancy mansion to a dilapidated shithole.

SPEAKER_00

But he like unwraps this thing and he and the recording's like, don't ever unwrap this because the the they'll smell it and they'll come for it or whatever.

SPEAKER_02

It's like and then it's like the like I at least was kind of hoping for a little of Staphony in that. Yeah, and uh all we got was a fucking chode of a knife. It looked like a fucking cheese board knife.

SPEAKER_00

I was actually, you know, it's funny, the one that she put in her pocket really early on. I was like, oh, what if it'd be great if it was that knife? But then it wasn't, so it didn't matter. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um like an accidental pickup, that would have been fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, remember, like, doesn't he like hand or he's like hold this knife for me or whatever?

SPEAKER_02

Is there a motorcycle at my house or yours?

SPEAKER_00

There's no motorcycle here.

SPEAKER_01

Are you sure?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, maybe not. All I could hear was a motorcycle revived its ass off and now it's gone.

SPEAKER_00

It might be here, I don't know. If I'll I guess I'll hear it on the playback. What was I saying? Oh, it doesn't make sense. If you're saying this picks up right where the last one left off, why is there's there's so many books out there and they're all in different locations? Like, what do we do? I don't understand how we got from evil too.

SPEAKER_02

That is true because we have the demon possession from the last movie, but the book is in a different house.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like how many of these books exist? Like, I don't I am so confused.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, because they try to tie like the lore of the originals back to the lore of the new one or the new one, but to tie it to the lore of the yeah, no, you're right.

SPEAKER_00

But were they even doing that? Because I didn't think that. I didn't I wasn't like, oh, this is the well.

SPEAKER_02

I thought like when we see the kid in like the little attic, and it's like I've I've found this artifact and the cult of the the coven of the whatever the fuck knife welders. Um I was like, Oh, okay, they're like trying to go back to the original lore and tie that in and tie it into the modern movies, but now you're right, that doesn't make any fucking sense because in the modern movies the book is in LA in an apartment complex.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. It's so confusing. It's not even confusing, it's just not thought out. And I think it's funny where we keep having these directors come in and do these things, and and obviously Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are still producers on this stuff, but it's like I I don't understand what the pitch is. It's like, okay, you're gonna make an Evil Dead movie, and you're gonna make an Evil Dead movie, and you're gonna make it, and but don't worry about what everyone else is doing, just make whatever Evil Dead movie you want to make. And I'm just like I again, I struggle with I don't think this franchise at this point with these serious horror movies has any sort of real identity to them.

SPEAKER_02

And again, this is why I will restate that Scream is the best franchise, because Scream is the only franchise that has continuity across seven films.

SPEAKER_00

But I'm not even looking necessarily for continuity. I'm thinking I'm just looking for I guess a type of continuity. And and I think I like I think if you watch this movie, this is your first Evil Dead movie, you're gonna be like, who are these possessed people? Why are there already possessed people? Like, what is what type of possessed people are? Is this the devil or are these like demon? Like, what is are the super natural like you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

Like, what is but I don't even know that you from watching any of the earlier ones. Like, I now I now know they're called deadites from engaging with people on Instagram, but like I've never ever gathered that from the films.

SPEAKER_00

But I think that's because those early movies were supposed to be like there was an element of comedy entrenched in them and fun entrenched in them. Where this one, if you're gonna go serious with it, you then you have to you have to do something that you know makes it more uh logical for viewers, I think. I and that's where I struggle. Like if and when I say don't have a have an identity, I mean that like the Raimi ones, you're watching Raimi be have fun. That's what those movies are, and obviously they have this this main character who is across all the movies who is fun and jokey and and quippy or whatever, right? He's he's a he's a a buffoon sort of, but he's lovable. You know what I mean? Like I would I almost wish okay, then have a main character like that in these new ones somehow. At least have one person in all. I don't know, like this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Are you just hung up on everybody's depressing and sad and there's nobody you want to watch?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's just like I don't have any, like, and but also on top of that, if this was a vampire movie, I'd be like, well, I know the rules for vampires. Like I can watch sinners and be like, well, you can't get invited in, like, because that's a thing. Like, oh, there's a there's this element of like who's a vampire, who's not a vampire happening. Like, there's an element there that I I as a film goer, I understand. When I'm watching these Deadeye things, you're just like, anything's possible. They can possess people with saliva, I guess. So why don't they just be able to do that?

SPEAKER_02

But then sometimes they can't even get in the house and it makes no fucking sense.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and sometimes they're bleeding all over people, but they're not affected. I like I don't understand what's going on.

SPEAKER_02

But okay, can we just talk about all the dad's wet mouth stuff, the mashed potatoes, the making out with the wife? Like, I literally almost vomited in both of those scenes.

SPEAKER_00

This is a gross movie.

SPEAKER_02

It was it's disgusting.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. When she's like, I haven't been kissed like that in forever. I'm like, this is I can't watch this.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that's sad, lady. You should have an affair.

SPEAKER_00

I know, and I feel so bad for the mom. I kind of wish she made it.

SPEAKER_02

I don't, I think she's a piece of shit.

SPEAKER_00

She's she is, but she's like she's trapped in this trauma fucking family.

SPEAKER_02

Like but no, no, women who enable abuse, that's right. And they make excuses of like Christianity and the man should lead the house and blah blah blah. No, you are enabling a pattern of abuse.

SPEAKER_00

And she's enabling her her shitty her city her shitty sons to do like you know, blah blah blah. Yeah. Um no sense. I don't know. I think here's here's the thing. I'll say some good things about the movie. Like I think it's gruesome and it looks really real. Like when he's shooting himself in the face, I don't know how they did that. That was like some of the that was insane. I was like, this, I've never seen anything like this before. Um there's some suspenseful moments in it when like she has the uh the weed whacker thing on her face. With the grandma, with is it the grandma? Yeah, and then she's gonna be able to do it. Yeah, pull the pull the choke or whatever it was. I was like, this is this is fucking crazy. Um but again, it does at the same time, it does this weird thing. Like if there's a moment where she's walking up the stairs and she like looks down and there's like a broken picture on the ground. She like, for whatever reason, at that moment, needs to pick it up and study at this fucking picture, giving the grandma just enough time to sneak up on like why why do you care about this picture on the ground? Like, what are we doing? Do you know what I'm talking about? Yeah, it's it's it's just I don't know. Like, I'm not I'm not having fun and I'm not scared. I think that's where I get it.

SPEAKER_02

I I wish that you had seen this movie with another person because I think having my wife with me, and like I really enjoyed her reactions because there were multiple moments where she would because Chloe's like like I get scared at like serial killer, like things that I believe could actually happen in real life where Chloe's like possession, ghosts, those things scare her, and they have no weight on me. So in this one, she was just like, ah, ooh, fuck, ah and so that was really fun for me to watch.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, that sounds fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I wish I could see it with you guys, you know.

SPEAKER_02

We're gonna have to like a big one. The next time we're really excited about a movie, either we'll just come out to LA or you'll come to Denver just so we can see a movie together.

SPEAKER_00

The next scream, scream eight.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we have to. We have to, you know, we have to.

SPEAKER_00

We we probably should, yeah. Yeah, it's a must. Um, let's talk about this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, who do you like in this movie? Just the main girl.

SPEAKER_02

I l I like the kid from Wednesday, the main sensitive, abused boy.

SPEAKER_03

This little bitch.

SPEAKER_02

For for me in this one, I didn't feel as much a need to like people. I liked the wife and the girlfriend, baby Rashida. She was great. Um, and the abused son. Like, I don't know. I just like I didn't feel the need as much to like people in this one because it wasn't like people are terrible and I have a fucking blanket trauma thrown at them that's just a lame excuse for behavior. It was like I actually felt like there was a developed story of abuse that was like not abuse with the capital A, but very much obvious that ran through everything that happened. And so I felt I did feel things for these characters. I felt for that kid.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, I felt for her, the French girl. I don't I wish I knew people's names.

SPEAKER_01

Um her name was Franchie. Franchie? Franchie.

SPEAKER_00

I need to be if I'm not being entertained in a way that's like Sam Raimi entertainment, like I need to be like cheering for something or hoping someone makes it out alive.

SPEAKER_02

Do you know what's so funny? I can't wait for you to start listening to The Shards. I don't know if you remember how long ago I reached out for you to read The Shards and I was like I have the hard I have the hardcover in my house. And I don't want you to take offense to this because I think it's intentional, but like the Brett Easton Ellis' whole thing and writing himself as like a main teenage character is like I was a fan of Joan Diddy and was trying to write numbness as a feeling. And like sometimes you talk like that. And so I always laugh when yes, and so I always laugh when I read the shards because I'm like the way that he like talks about things and like the nonchalantness of it. I'm like, that's so bad.

SPEAKER_00

That's weird. Are you saying because like I need meaning in these characters? Like, I don't know, like what do you mean?

SPEAKER_02

Well, like, like just like like literally in the book, he talks about numbness as a a feeling that he's aspiring to be able to do that. Oh, I see what you're saying, and then you're like, when I see these movies, I feel nothing. I feel numb.

SPEAKER_00

I'm numb. I'm numb to them. But I'm not a numb person, like I watch movies and I'm like, I care about this. Like, I'm not numb to this. You care very deeply. But I I think, yeah, I don't know. I I think part of the problem too is like I'm such an OG Evil Dead fan. And that was like such a um Evil Dead too, especially was like such a moment in my like film nerd. What do you what do you say? Like experience. I don't know, like growing up. Like it's hard to watch these movies now and to see like I wanna I wanna make a I wanna write an Evil Dead movie, like because I I feel like I could take this give it all the things that I wish that it had right now. And I'm not saying it needs to be goofy, and I'm not saying it needs to be like you need to have Ash in there or something. Like, I'm just saying, like, to me these feel very generic, and like I I I don't care about the drama. Like, I would be more interested if they all showed up and they were like a happy family and this happened to them. That's more terrifying. Like the fact that they're already shitty people and then they're being a good thing.

SPEAKER_02

That is funny, you make a good point with that. Like, why is it that to raise the stakes of the movie? There's always like drama walking into it, and not like we're all really fucking happy, which makes this miserable situation so much worse.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Even in the remake, the first remake that we watched, like she has a drug problem and she's trying to like become be sober, and like, and then in the new one, like there was I even I couldn't even tell you exactly what the specific drama was in this in in Rise.

SPEAKER_02

Um, but there was we just know through exposition that the one sister was a guitar technician.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And she's pregnant now, and then in this one, they're clearly uh the most abusive family ever. And it's just like I I want to like these people in that way. I'm scared when they die. I feel bad when they die.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think you're you don't love falling on the trope of trauma equals drama.

SPEAKER_00

But I think it no, but I see here's the thing. Like, I love something like hereditary, which is about that, or Babaduke, which is about that. But like they're not doing it in that way. Like it's not symbolic, it's not a big thing.

SPEAKER_02

But you're you're watching but but this isn't about watching the trauma happen to the family and how it changes them. It's saying the family has trauma, so that's their character development going into the movie, which is different. So that's what you don't like is like falling on the trope of I don't have to develop characters, I have to give them trauma, and then we should feel bad for them.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Yeah, there is no development, it's just like, oh, we all have this shit, and then we're just like Yeah, it's like every time like the dead Yeah, and I get it, it's a horror movie, I get that. But I'm saying with the Evil Dead thing to have an identity, it needs to either be fun and silly and over the top, or it needs to be like I don't know, it needs to have something special to it, and it has, in my opinion, nothing. I guess what it has now is just gore. It's just gory. So but it's great gore.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. I um like our Instagram, I know you don't look at it, but like it's all like shit. I look at it all the time. It's all shit that I create. Like, I don't like do like videos of myself talking like most like social media people like to do.

SPEAKER_00

I did look at it yesterday, actually. I'm not gonna lie to you. And what'd you think? I was like, this is this is great stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you liked it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. And there's some stuff where I was like, are you are you finding these videos? Are you making these yourself? I make everything on there. Top five something, I forget now.

SPEAKER_02

Did you watch my six reasons Stu Mocker is and should stay dead?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I did watch that one.

SPEAKER_02

I felt very passionately about that. And I You You made that yourself, all those? I made that whole thing myself, and I really wanted more engagement than that, and I was a little bummed out. I didn't get as much as I wanted.

SPEAKER_00

I always hear the stuff that you work the hardest on that you want engagement never gets the most engagement. It's the stuff that you never really think about.

SPEAKER_02

This is what I've learned since having like a horror channel. People like Stu better than Billy, blew my fucking mind because I'm a Billy girl.

SPEAKER_00

That's stupid.

SPEAKER_02

That's I agree. And everybody loves Scream 4.

SPEAKER_00

Well, Scream 4 is good.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think because it was because I read all the spoilers, because I had read on Reddit what was happening right before going into it and could not believe it, and then it was exactly 100% true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'll regret that for the rest of my life.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Because I think everybody loves it in a way that I can't.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I do think like looking back on it, I mean, it's just a fun movie. I don't know. Like it's just funny. It's a fun movie. I like it. The character's in it.

SPEAKER_02

I'll never get over it. Like, I've I've the number of times I've stood in the same room with Emma Roberts. There's no way it'll ever, ever convince me that she could raise a knife on somebody and not get kicked in the face.

SPEAKER_00

Who cares? You don't know what her height is in that movie. That's what I keep saying. You don't know. She could have been 6'3 in that movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, if they had yeah, alright, fine, whatever.

SPEAKER_00

I'm just saying.

SPEAKER_02

I'm not gonna get hung up on it. Um But yeah, anyways.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I came out of that movie, so this is what I was meaning to say. I've never been one to like show my face on our social media. And coming out of the movie, I wanted to like kind of be like other people and be like, I was like, Chloe, I kinda wanna like take a reaction video in the car. And she was like, But then you'll spoil your episode for everybody if they know your opinion before they listen to the episode, and I was like, good point. So I didn't do it. But I like literally coming out of the movie wanted to be like, Holy shit, see this movie. Like, because the like is it what I wanted from one, two, and three? No, it's not those movies, but clearly what the studio heads who have decided we're moving on from that have decided is we're making serious movies. And I thought, as a filmmaker having to make a serious movie of these films that meant so much to other filmmakers and just fans in general. Here's a really good way to do that serious studio pick and the gore and put like all the horror fans in seats, but like try to call back moments in subtle ways that were a little more significant than what Lee Cronin did. Like you have to admit this was way better than Rise, right? No, then are you kidding me? I came out of this and I was like, this was a good horror film. Like Chloe and I watched Rise and we were like, that movie fucking sucked. Didn't care the whole time. One cool fish I shot. The chick, the main chick was brilliant in it. She was so good. Her acting was great. Like, no knock on the acting, but it just the story I didn't care about. This, I was like, I haven't had a reaction to a horror movie in such a long time now, like literally since Scream 7. And that was more like hype than anything. And sitting in the theater, it was just like, oh my god, oh fuck, oh shit, oh, no, he like it felt good to feel that way in a theater again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. No, I look, here's the thing, like, I'm not it's weird. It's it's I guess I have more nuanced opinion on it. Like, I yeah, there were moments where I was like looking away because this was like I was like, wow, this is crazy the amount of violence they're they're doing. Even in the opening scene where he pulls his buddy out of the water and it's like he's missing half his body or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

But just his spine hanging out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but but then when she put out the gunshot weapon was just her face, that was so fucking creepy. That was the creepiest part of the stuff.

SPEAKER_00

I also like how it was raining. It was also just like close-up the movie, by the way. But anyway, I I I appreciated some of the stuff, but like I was more on like I was more grossed out and more it felt more real than the last movie than Rise. Like Rise Gore, I was like, this is just like this is just fucking you know, craft like arts and crafts here with fake blood. Like, you know what I mean? Like in this one, it's like okay, this looks real, this looks fucked up. Um but I still I just didn't care. I wasn't I wasn't really on the edge of my seat the whole time.

SPEAKER_02

And do you know what's funny is like like I don't want to lie about it, I enjoyed this, but it didn't scare me. But then we went home and we got deep into Widow's Bay.

SPEAKER_00

And then they'll like Oh, you're you're watching how far in are you now?

SPEAKER_02

We're almost done. We're finishing tonight when Chloe gets home from the soccer. She's at a soccer game right now, but when she gone, we're gonna finish. But last night we got into like what we're calling the Michael Myers episode, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which shouldn't have scared us, but did we were both freaked the fuck up? Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's amazing. I love that episode. When she's like running and then she like stops and looks back.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. It's like oh, though, fucking clown running in the crawl space.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's that's scary. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I can't wait to talk about this one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, me too. Well, that's a different episode. Yep. Um look, I want to like this movie. I want to like these movies. I love Evil Dead.

SPEAKER_02

I thought you were gonna like I didn't okay. I didn't think you were gonna like you could appreciate it as a modern pay in homage to Sam Raimi.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think it was, though. I think honestly, I think what I was doing.

SPEAKER_02

What about that dope fucking mirror shot? The mirror shot was cool. Yes, you know what I'm talking about, where it's like you're watching it and then you realize the mirror reverses and it's on the other side of it. Yeah, that was fucking cool. And I was like, he's gonna be into it, he's gonna like this movie.

SPEAKER_00

Do I? Do I love a mirror shot?

SPEAKER_02

You bring it up every episode.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I mean, the mirror shot was cool. Um, yeah, I don't know. I uh let's talk about the end. Let's talk about once the which I knew it was coming because we saw the dad had seen something in the in the casket come to life.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we knew the kid was gonna come back, Vecna.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Why is Vecna in this fucking movie, dude? I could not not think of Vecna. The way he even talked was exactly the same as this fucking thing. I was like, this is such a bad ending. This is I much preferred the endings to both the other movies, like Evil Dead, when she's just like getting chased by herself or whatever, and then she like chainsaws it. Like, that's to me that works in a weird symbolic way. And then in the last one where they had that weird fucking creature that was like all of them morphed together. Yeah, but this is like I've already seen Faknuff been killed a million times now on Stranger Things. Like, why like why are we in this random construction site?

SPEAKER_02

Like Which is also why are we having a funeral next to that same construction site?

SPEAKER_00

Exactly! What the fuck are we doing? Like, who wrote this shit? Um I I don't know. I again I don't want to be too harsh on stuff because I know people work hard on these things, but like I I think they tried to make an Evil Dead movie, and I just I don't it did I don't know. It just didn't work for me. It didn't work for me in any in almost any way.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think any movie again will ever be one of the original three because I agree with that.

SPEAKER_00

It's Sam Remedy. But take it to the next level, though. But I don't think this is taking it to any sort of new we do something new.

SPEAKER_02

But I think out of all of the remakes that have come since that this one did the best job of saying, let's do a new modern take where we have to go hard for like the extremist horror audiences now and try to throw in some subtle throwbacks for the OG fans. This one did the best of it, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_00

That's yeah, that's fair. So with that, should we rank the movies? Hang on, there was when I went to see this movie, there was only like maybe like it was like me and like five other couples there.

SPEAKER_02

And did you go awkwardly sit next to a couple to make them feel uncomfortable? Nah. You should have.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I just like looked at him like, isn't this fucked up? Isn't that gross? Um, no, but in front of me was like this dad and this son who had to be like 10 years old. I was like, what the fuck? That's too fucked up for a 10-year-old. Yes.

SPEAKER_02

I was like, that opening scene, I would have been walking my kid out. Like I can get being like, I love evil dudge as a kid and not knowing better, and then walking in and being like, oops, nope, and walking your kid out.

SPEAKER_00

No, they're not.

SPEAKER_02

The trailer came on for it today on YouTube, and I immediately covered out Donnie's eyes and was like, Chloe, don't turn the TV off, turn it off, turn it off.

SPEAKER_00

By the way, did you get the trailer for whale fall?

SPEAKER_02

Whale fall?

SPEAKER_00

Have you not seen this trailer? No.

SPEAKER_02

And a whale falls.

SPEAKER_00

Scuba diving and a whale comes by him. This big whale. And I already scaled scared of whales, so I'm already like, oh shit. Big giant whale comes by him. Then you find out this this whale is chasing like a giant squid. Okay. And it goes by him again, and he's chasing the squid. And he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

SPEAKER_02

Is this the modern time of Moby Dick?

SPEAKER_00

Just wait. And then the squid I'll send you the trailer. It's crazy. Then the whale has the squid in its mouth, right? But then the squid, with one of its tentacles that's hanging out of the mouth, grabs the scuba driver. And it's holding on to the scuba diver. So the scuba diver is like being dragged by this thing that's getting swallowed by this whale. And then it pulls him into the whale's mouth, right? And then he's like getting out of the whale's mouth. And then he gets knocked back into the whale. And then you see him getting swallowed by the whale. Like you see the way that the whale's throat is, and it's like opening, and the squid goes in and then closes. And then the the you see the shot of the diver getting swallowed by the whale. And he gets swallowed by the whale.

SPEAKER_02

Did you just watch the entire movie in the trailer?

SPEAKER_00

No, I think the whole movie takes place in the whale. Like, yeah, I think he's in the whale. And then the squid is still how to get out. Also in the whale. So like he's being attacked by the squid in the whale's stomach.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, Chloe would love this. Did you get um It looks crazy? Last House on Oak Street.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I've seen that a couple times actually. I'm down. I'm I'd see that movie. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Chloe can't fucking wait. Do you want to come out? We'll we'll fly you out to watch that movie with us in two weeks or whenever it's out. I'm getting it.

SPEAKER_00

I'm in New York. I mean, I want to see it, but I I'm probably gonna stay here at my lake house.

SPEAKER_02

Fair. Do you want to meet us at our lake house in Montana over Labor Day to go see a scary movie?

SPEAKER_00

Maybe. You should can I drive there? Um hang on. What was I gonna say? Should we review Oak Street or whatever? Is that a horror movie?

SPEAKER_02

If it fits, yeah. I mean, our schedule's wide open.

SPEAKER_00

I think we can do it. We can do whatever the fuck we want. Let's do it. It looks ridiculous. I'm I'm in.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna look up Whalefall tonight.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's a crazy trailer. It's like just that one scene. It's like the whole scene. That's just the scene of the trailer. Anyway, let's rank these movies, as you said.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, which was shout out once again to one of my favorite people to interact with on our social channels. I love when people on social actually like really truly interact with us. And sci-fi Aaron, you're always a gem. And he was like, You ranked Scream, are you gonna rank this one? And I was like, that's actually a pretty good idea.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I was thinking though? I think if we rank stuff in the future, maybe we should we should do like a combined list where we agree together? Like like your no, like your number one would be at like six points, and your number six, like in this case, for Evil Dead would be one point. And then you would add those numbers together based on where they come up with.

SPEAKER_02

Like come up with a rating scale to see where they come up at.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but like say like your number like one is six points, and mine in my movie that was your number one is like three.

SPEAKER_02

That would be like so it comes out to like a four point five.

SPEAKER_00

Comes out to a nine point. And then it gets ranked, and then the rank is the combined points, so maybe your number one is.

SPEAKER_02

So not like an average, like add our points together. Sort of. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Well, my ranking was very easy for me to come up with.

SPEAKER_00

Let's start at the bottom, right?

SPEAKER_02

You want to start at worst to best?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we should do worst to best, I think.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Worst for me. Evil Dead Rise.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Evil Dead 2013.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Evil Dead Burn.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Army of Darkness. The Evil Dead.

SPEAKER_00

Interesting. Awesome. Do you have any reasoning for that or like I do?

SPEAKER_02

Um, I had it was not hard for me to put the remakes at the bottom and the original three at the top. While I think two and army of darkness are the most fun, um I think the significance of one just ranks stronger and two captures one and three, which is what put it at one, and then one matters more than three.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, that makes sense. I like it. I like it. You're gonna hate my list.

SPEAKER_02

Let's hear it, let's go.

SPEAKER_00

Number six evil dead burn.

SPEAKER_02

Are you fucking stupid? Seriously.

SPEAKER_00

Look, the three new ones are all very close together.

SPEAKER_02

It's like we're talking like this one was actually good though. All right. Sorry, I just I didn't realize I was doing this podcast.

SPEAKER_00

I think that's a fair statement. I mean, I look, I think Rise is number five, and Rise won out over burn because I think Rise.

SPEAKER_02

You just like that morphine body bullshit.

SPEAKER_00

I did like the morphine body thing, but I also liked the main character and the location a lot more. I thought the record having the vinyl records and the DJ thing was clever.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, the recording are evil delivery on records.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I just happen to have this dagger that they're smelling and coming to tag. I it I I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, all right.

SPEAKER_00

They're close. I mean, I would they they're basically at the bottom of the barrel here, these last two movies. Okay, they're at the bottom of the barrel. I don't care. I appreciate the Evil Dead remake. That's number four. The original I just same.

SPEAKER_02

We leveled out there.

SPEAKER_00

It's not great, but I like the end a lot. And if we're ranking these, I have to put it somewhere. I would rather watch that one than the other two.

SPEAKER_02

I would watch that again. I won't watch the other two ever again, probably. But that one I would watch again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And then I'm gonna put The Evil Dead, the original, the OG one, number three. Which is a great movie, and it's hard to rank these movies, but I think it tries to be a horror movie, and it is a great horror movie, but it's lacking all of that fun Sam Raimi shit that I love. So it goes to number three. And then this is I would tie them if I could, but we can't tie them. So Army of Darkness, number two. Sorry, all the people out there that think Army of Darkness is better. To me, it's just like its own thing, and in the Evil Dead conversation, like it's it stands out.

SPEAKER_02

It's beloved, but it's different.

SPEAKER_00

I love it. Don't get me wrong, I I will watch it. I'd probably watch it more than I would watch Evil Dead 2, to be honest. Like, it's just easier to watch. It's you know, you can just put it on and have a good time. Evil Dead 2, number one. Evil Dead 2 to me is just like the most clever, original, like horror movie camerawork scenes that are happening there that I would never think to do. Like, you watch that movie the first time, you're like, what the fuck is going on? Like, who thinks of this shit? Like, you know, it's just it's just so much fun to watch that movie. And I think anyone who's like an aspiring filmmaker needs to watch that movie. That to me is like one of the must-see movies.

SPEAKER_02

Here's why I have to give I knew Evil Dead 2 would be your favorite, and I don't think you knew it would be my favorite. What did you think my favorite was gonna be?

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, I thought it'd be the OG.

SPEAKER_02

It was close, um, yeah, yeah. But two had just had more fun, and Sam Remy was a better filmmaker at that point, so he was like Yeah, honestly, the deer won it for me. The possessed deer head is my favorite part of all of these movies. I'm not fucking kidding. Um that's amazing, and Henrietta, brilliant. But why one also has the edge for me over Army of Darkness? Well, Army of Darkness is a great movie and it's really fucking fun and it's really fucking funny. Like the moments in one, like the very first, like possessed from the basement shot, and the cheerleader like turning her head and like it's start, like it started all the right moments, and so you have to give credit where credit's due. Like Army of Darkness is its own thing, and it's not necessarily this, but it fits in the style of filmmaking. If you get what I'm saying, a hundred percent.

SPEAKER_00

And I and I, you know, it's funny, like I I think I take for granted what all the stuff that the ONG Evil Dead movie did, because you're right, like those. I remember being a kid and seeing that shot with her head just like sticking out of that door, that trap door, and just being like totally creeped out by that entire idea. Like they don't know what to do with this thing, and it's just watching them. And even the the shot of like from her perspective, right? When it's like listening to all the other people in the in the cabin, but even just the fucking opening shot of the or not the opening shot, but like the shot of the steady camp through the forest. Like, that is so iconic and so cool, and like obviously.

SPEAKER_02

It's funny that every movie since has had to do its version of that shot since.

SPEAKER_00

But this movie did in not we this new one was the weakest version of that. Uh they barely even did it, to be honest. Yeah, I I will like one moment in the middle of the movie where they do it.

SPEAKER_02

I can't believe it was your least favorite, though. Like, I actually was like, that was a good horror movie. I don't ever want to see it again. It was a good horror movie. Like, I walked out of the theater and said that was good. I did not feel that way about others.

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, I think if they had made more of those people in that family likable, or made it a little bit more light in the beginning, that would have changed the whole thing. But for like the first 30 minutes, I was like, this is miserable to watch. Like, I'm not having fun. There was no redeeming element in any of that.

SPEAKER_02

Like, the heaviness is a feeling that you carry through the entire way, gets exhausting as opposed to like I'm enjoying these people, and now the heaviness is hard because I enjoy these people.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like it to me, it's always more effective if you make the audience at least somewhat like the people. Like, they don't have to be the most likable people in the world, but like, even when the an unlikable person is one of those people that you like to watch regardless. You know what I mean? Like the bitch in like a soap opera is like, oh, she's so such a bitch, but I love watching her. I mean, first of all, this girl has to really regret marrying this dude. Not only does he abuse her, then his entire family tries to kill her. Why did she even go back with them? Just go home. What are we doing here? Um, why are you hanging out with these people that you hate?

SPEAKER_02

Obligation, politeness and propriety, and like yeah, it's complicated. Like, that's why I appreciate these dynamics. It's complicated.

SPEAKER_00

But that's why I was hoping like there'd be a moment in this movie where like maybe they teamed up. Like the fact that it ended up being like, oh, I'm just gonna become a dead idea.

SPEAKER_02

I think the mom had actually stopped grandma when we thought she might exactly that would have been a better story.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I just feel like we could have used something like that. And I know we need a final girl or whatever, but and what would you do once the sun came back? But even maybe at that moment have the sun come back and then the mom turn. Like that makes more sense than doing it way early on. I don't know. I just feel like I just yeah, I don't want to keep bashing this movie. I just I I wasn't into it. I didn't dig it. I didn't dig it. Good gore. There were a couple cool scenes, those two that I shouted out earlier. I like the main chick a lot.

SPEAKER_02

Well, no, I'm really glad I didn't like get on our Instagram and do a live and hype this video.

SPEAKER_00

No, I think you should if you feel that way. Like, I here's the thing like I think it's cool that we both have different opinions of this movie. But I but you said it yourself, you're never gonna watch this movie again.

SPEAKER_02

No, it's too violent. That car scene was yeah, that car scene was the gore. Like, I don't like gory movies.

SPEAKER_00

When you can't when you say car scene, are you talking about the scene where like he's a dad's attacking the girlfriend in the car?

SPEAKER_02

I thought that was fucking awful. Like, that was so hard to watch. It was so hardcore, it was so intense, it was really, really, really well done. And I was just like, Yeah, the whole time I was like, fuck this, fuck, fuck this, fuck.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I will give that scene credit too. Yeah, I'm that was maybe a standout scene as far as like shocking.

SPEAKER_02

And really well shot, like the movement choreographing that fight through the car and all the things that happened in it, and sustaining a fight scene in the car for longer than I expected. Like I thought that scene was incredibly well done.

SPEAKER_00

See, I thought you were talking about the scene in the car where he hits her and then like they go over and then she lights him on fire or whatever. Oh, yeah, no.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I loved that scene when it smash cut to the booty.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, yeah, I agree. I think that I don't think that this this team, this writer, director, and I I guess he co-read it with somebody, the movie. Like, I think they're gonna be good. Like, I I think I'm impressed with technical aspects of this movie.

SPEAKER_02

But just as an Evil Dead movie, I was just like, this doesn't I truly appreciate the editor for throwing in like really funny abrupt scene cuts. Yeah, like multiple times throughout that were just like gross outs or like really fucking hilarious, and just like like things would get really intense, and then would be like, here's a fucking hilarious smash cut to like lighten the mood for 10 seconds.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Mad props to whoever edited this film.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And look, I want more Evil Dead. I just hope that someday somewhere, I'm gonna write my own Evil Dead movie at this point. Like, someone gives us something that feels like it's fun to watch, but it's also scary. Do you know what I mean? Like I don't know how to explain it.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you can't just what you want is lightning in a bottle again.

SPEAKER_00

And no, I don't. I don't know. Like, I think it I think it's possible. Here's the thing. I don't I will never be one of those people who's like, you can never do that again. Like, I agree. I don't think you could ever do Evil Dead 2 again. All right, let's wrap this up. We've been in Evil Dead world. I'm happy that now you know what that even means.

SPEAKER_02

I am so I didn't like I kind of thought, oh, we did Scream and then we kind of like stopped doing franchises and kind of accidentally fell into doing Evil Dead. It wasn't part of our original plan. Um I'm so glad we did. I'm so glad I discovered the original three films. Obviously, you know, like I want Slasher Bash to eventually like be like Slasher Bash events, and the very first thing I want to do is an Evil Dead original three like movie marathon with like drinking games and prizes and blah.

SPEAKER_00

Hell yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like we give out like a really nice chainsaw at the end of the night.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, let's give out fake hands and stuff, like severed hands.

SPEAKER_02

I like it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We like do like um nipple ring, like nipple jewelry that's like uh clamps, like amp clamps. Or what? Never mind, cut this. I'm drunk. Ignore me.

SPEAKER_00

What moment in the movie?

SPEAKER_02

No, I was thinking about like when he like is in the remake 2013 when he's like doing the battery clamps, gotcha, and then like the adrenaline, like doing those as like nipple clip-on rings.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, we can try that. Here's some free clamps. What are they for? Uh what do you want them to be? What do you want them to be? Yeah, um, yeah, no, this has been fun. Like, I love when people discover movies like this. Um, and obviously we'll review the next one when it comes out.

SPEAKER_02

I did go into this one expecting not to like it because of how much I disliked Rise. And not in like I disliked it as a movie, but just in that it wasn't an Evil Dead movie to me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So I guess that was the difference for me, is Rise didn't feel like an Evil Dead to movie to me in any way. And this one did. This one felt like somebody who was a fan of the Evil Dead, who was tasked with making a modern Evil Dead film that could uh be appealing to modern horror audiences and trying to nod and pull in Evil Dead fans. I think Sebastian, whatever the fuck his name is, did that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I kind of I'm interested to think what the fan we should we should ask that question maybe on social. Like, what do people think of this movie?

SPEAKER_02

I came out of the movie expecting everybody to love it, and I've been seeing that it's got very mixed reviews. It's like a love hate.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the fan score on Metacritic is 71, 7.1. Which is pretty high.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I don't know. Um anyway, let's wrap this up. I think we gave the lists. We gave the fans what they wanted. Go get 'em, cuz.

SPEAKER_01

Go get 'em, cuz.
