This week on Slasher Bash, Maddi and Ben do their full review of Widow's Bay season one. Plus Avenger's Doomsday trailer reactions!
Let's do this, bitch. What's up, everybody, and welcome to Slasher Bash, the podcast, the podcast, where we discuss all things horror, movies, television now. That's our first television review. Uh, I am one of your hosts, Benjamin, uh, with my co-host here, Madison. What up? And today we are going to be recording the entirety of Widow's Bay season one.
SPEAKER_03Which was what, ten episodes?
SPEAKER_00Ten episodes long.
SPEAKER_03That I squashed in two days of not sleeping.
SPEAKER_00It's hard to to not watch it. It's hard to not click next episode on this show.
SPEAKER_03It was addicting for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um what's up? How's it going?
SPEAKER_03Oh, you know, just uh it literally, I don't know why it feels like like we recorded a week ago, so I don't know why it feels like it's been like months since we've recorded, but it does.
SPEAKER_00I've had like tons of people here at the lake house, so it feels like because we do so much every day, it feels like it's been a while.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But I'm back in the the normal room, not in the basement this time. So we won't hear toilets flush flushing or anything.
SPEAKER_03Love it.
SPEAKER_00Right before this, I I learned that the doomsday trailer dropped. Yeah, I watched it right before this too. Did you watch it? What'd you think?
SPEAKER_03Um, you know, I don't think there's gonna they're ever gonna capture what the Infinity saga had, but at least this felt a little more like nostalgic and like it would be more epic than like everything that we've been seeing from Marvel the last however many six, seven years, however long it's been. I'm excited. I'm gonna go see it. I realized though the day it comes out is the day I go to Disneyland with like 14 people, and I was like, fuck, can I convince a bunch of people to go see this on arrival night?
SPEAKER_00But there's a theater right there, I think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there is. But now I'm excited because I'm like, oh, they'll totally be doing like all the special stuff for it at Disneyland, like Dr. Doom will be there and shit.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that'd be awesome. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I I didn't think the trailer was that good. Like, I think it was just sort of like a mediocre trailer. Like I'm hyped for the movie based on the last 30 seconds or the last like 10 seconds of the trailer with yeah, though I do think that what we're seeing is not exactly what's going on there. I don't think he's saying like it's not possible to Steve Rogers. Yeah. I think he's saying that to like Robert Downey or something.
SPEAKER_03I did too. I like I'm that's the one thing I'm so curious about. Are they gonna acknowledge that like Doom is like a variant of Tony Stark?
SPEAKER_00And is he a variant of Tony Stark?
SPEAKER_03That's what I well is when he said that's not possible, like how are you here or whatever? That's not possible. I thought for sure he was looking at Doom, and I was like, Oh, he is gonna be a variant, which is kind of the only thing I would accept. Like if it's Robert Downey Jr., my god, I can't, I almost called him Robert Pattinson.
SPEAKER_00If it's Robert Pattinson, his Batman shows up in this. Who's not in this movie?
SPEAKER_03If it's if it's RDJ playing a completely different role, and yeah, it's not addressed that he looks exactly like Tony Stark, I'm gonna be annoyed. So they better acknowledge he's a variant. He better be one.
SPEAKER_00But does that mean that him and Captain America are like together at that moment? Maybe they maybe they don't know that he's doom. Maybe he's out of his costume and they don't realize that he's doom or something.
SPEAKER_04Interesting.
SPEAKER_00And they just like, oh, it's a variant of Tony Stark or whatever.
SPEAKER_03And is is that Captain America our Captain America, or is that an evil Captain America or a Captain America from a different It's not an evil Captain America because we see him with Thor's hammer.
SPEAKER_00Well, uh you know, being worthy doesn't mean that you're good. Didn't Thanos pick up the hammer? I think I think Thanos picked up the axe in the last in Endgame.
SPEAKER_04Did he actually pick it up? Or was it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he like grabs it from because it's flying back to Thor's hand and he like grabs it and then tries to push it into Thor's chest. And that's when Captain America picks up the hammer and hits him in the back.
SPEAKER_03Then everybody loses their shit.
SPEAKER_00I mean, come on. Come on.
SPEAKER_04Oh, is that big?
SPEAKER_00Anyway, yeah, I'm excited based just yeah, I'm excited just based on like the hype for it. I don't know, like we'll see when it comes out. I just don't think the trailer was very good. I mean it was like a lot of X-Men, a lot of Gambit.
SPEAKER_03I like Gambit, though. I'm excited for Gambo.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I like Gambit, but is he gonna sell the movie for people? I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Doubt it.
SPEAKER_00I liked how they showed uh Shang-Chi in it too. Yeah, that was cool. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm excited for it.
SPEAKER_00This isn't a Marvel podcast. This is a the horror movie podcast. And we are going to be talking about Widow's Bay. Maddie.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, ooh, ooh.
SPEAKER_00You finished it. I watched it, I've seen it twice now. I watched it again with my parents when I got to Lake House.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna watch it again.
SPEAKER_00I shouldn't say they loved it too. They loved it. They were like, let's watch more.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna, I've got all my friends watching it now. I'm definitely gonna watch it again, like ASAP.
SPEAKER_00Nice. So you must have liked it. Talk about did you like it? I did. At what point did you realize you were addicted to it?
SPEAKER_03Uh so I started it a couple weeks ago and we were just tired and in bed. Like, I if I want to watch something, I should never start it in bed because I'll fall asleep. We watched the first episode and Chloe fell asleep, and I was like, Oh, it's like it's interesting, but I wasn't like hooked. But then when we decided to do it on the pod and it got 19 Emmy nominations, I was like, okay, we really need to get on this. And so by episode two, we were like completely hooked. Is that the hotel episode? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you can't not get hooked in that episode. It was so but it was so funny because like while we were watching that, I was like, Chloe, I really need you to watch Hokum so that we can discuss the similarities between this and Hokum because I feel like similar plots, way better execution.
SPEAKER_00In what way?
SPEAKER_03Just the hotel episode specifically, when it's like he's going to stay in the hotel that's haunted to like prove that there's not, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. This, yeah. So you loved it. Did Chloe love it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Oh yeah. We were like, where is this on your scale? Like, is this like I would put it up there with Haunting of Hill House. Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00Like it's one that's a big praise for you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, haunting of Hill House is like the ultimate to me. And this is like maybe like a little bit below it. It's funny though, because it reminds me of like a couple weeks ago when I started it and then didn't finish it. And I don't know if I can't remember if you'd watched it or not, but how I was like, literally, do they make anything that's not influenced by Stephen King in some way now? And this is just clearly like a massive love letter to Stephen King.
SPEAKER_00Definitely. I mean, it's even set in like it feels like it's Maine. It obviously it's not, right? But it's it feels like the United States Northeast. Yeah. Which I guess it is.
SPEAKER_03Even like I noticed like all the time, like placements like um when she's in her little like book bus and there's a box of books where she finds the like haunted book, and right below it is the shining. And like it was just like clear that this is all about a love for Stephen King.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, I love this show too. I I I had a similar thing where I I remember one night I just started it and I I think I was drunk, and I like got 10 minutes in, and I I couldn't really focus on what was happening, so I was like, I can't watch this right now. Then I came back to it like um I don't know, a month later and just binged the whole thing. It was so good. It's so funny. And the uh the main cast who are all three of them are nominated for Emmys. Uh Jonathan Reese is nominated for best actor, and then the other two, Patricia, the girl who plays Patricia Emmy.
SPEAKER_03In episode one, I immediately was like, Wish this has to be intentional that she looks like Wendy from The Shining.
SPEAKER_00Oh what you think that's in- I didn't totally think everything was very intentional.
SPEAKER_03I think there are so many movies that sometimes you're like, I wonder if the intention was this, or I wonder if the intention was that, and it's just viewers in a crapshoot trying to toss things together that don't actually exist. Um, but this one I think everything was so intentional.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh first of all, that that actress name is um Kato Flynn. Mm-hmm. Patricia's by far my favorite character in this fucking show. She is so funny. She everything she does, the way she walks, she sounds like Alison Bree.
SPEAKER_03Like, if I were to like get up and like go get something from the kitchen while it was playing, like I would like you wouldn't be able to convince me that it wasn't Alison Bree in it.
SPEAKER_00That's funny. I think she's funnier than Alison Bree.
SPEAKER_03I think either could have done that role justice, but I don't know how to do it. She stole the show.
SPEAKER_00Um and then Steven Steven uh Root, who we've seen a million times in like a million other shows, he was in Barrie. Is he the one?
SPEAKER_03Is he Wick?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's Wick. He played.
SPEAKER_03I kept if I had a hard time. I don't know why this was like the one role I could remember him from, but as soon as he we were every time we watching him, I was like, hey Chloe, remember him as that gay vampire in True Blood?
SPEAKER_00Wait, I don't. Oh wait, yes, I do.
SPEAKER_03That's hilarious. And it's like he is in a million things, but I don't know why it kept calling that performance to mind because they were such different characters.
SPEAKER_00But I was like, Oh, he was such a gay little vamp. Is he Milton in Office Babe? Uh yes. Yes, he is. Is that right? Okay, yeah, nice, nice. Um, and then Jonathan Reese, who I've never seen before, but I guess he was on the other. You've never seen him before? I've never watched The Americans. I don't know what what I would have seen.
SPEAKER_03I never watched The Americans before the first thing I ever saw him in was uh Brothers and Sisters, which came out years ago, like Callista Flockhart's thing after uh Allie McBill ended. Um, but he has done so much like TV and film since then. That surprises me.
SPEAKER_00And at first he was annoying me because I I hate characters that are like constantly trying to like gaslight the entire town. You know what I mean? Like the way that he was like living in denial and like nothing weird happens here. We gotta get this this you know travel critic to like our town or whatever. I was like, this is gonna be annoying. Yeah. But quickly he was he just became amazing in the show.
SPEAKER_03But also still kind of a piece of shit. Like, I love who I can't remember, was it his kid who was like, blah blah blah isn't the reason why you're a shitty mare? It's like this.
SPEAKER_00And I don't even remember the exact reasons, but I love like watching him get called out on a shit for Yeah, but I don't think Oh, that's funny, that's your interpretation of that scene, because my my scene is he's just angry, like he's not a shitty mayor. Oh, I think some shitty.
SPEAKER_03I think he is a shitty mare.
SPEAKER_00In what way?
SPEAKER_03He knows. I mean, he even admits he's like like when he's talking about losing his wife and was like I don't know why I couldn't just listen to her. I don't know why I didn't believe her, and now I don't have a wife, and now I've brought all these people here, and now my kid's stuck on the side. Like, he knows that he's been denying something that all the evidence has been presented to him for years that it is true, and he has been doing nothing but dismissing it, and is now put a lot of people in harm's way because of that.
SPEAKER_00Well, when you say it like that, also like the first episode I remember thinking like this is like if Jaws was was from the mayor's perspective.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I like that.
SPEAKER_00Where he's like trying to keep the beach open, but it's all from like the mayor's perspective, and then you have like the cop who's like, no, we gotta close it. Well, I want to get deep into it. First, I want to call that this the showrunner for the show, Kate DePold, I think that's how you say her name. She wrote this original draft like way back in like 2012 or something, when like when she was writing for Parks and Wreck, and then um it it evolved a lot since whatever that version of it was. I think that was more just straight horror.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I would looked her up. She's got a pretty solid writing career. I didn't know the name, but I definitely looked up everything she did after seeing this show because I was very impressed.
SPEAKER_00I just watched The Heat recently because I I wanted to see you know her movie work, which was fine. It was fine.
SPEAKER_03That one's like a kind of a disappointment considering you have the powerhouses of Melissa McCarthy.
SPEAKER_00I know, like it was like so close. We're not here to talk about the heat, but maybe we can do a heat episode. Because like it was so close to being like a classic, but they just kind of fumbled it a little bit. Yep, you know, scenes were like a little too long and like it was too much improv. Um but anyway, so she yeah, she's the showrunner for the show, and then Hero Um Murray, who I don't know if you know the name, he's like a director. He directs a lot of the episodes on this, also producer. I love him. He's like a great TV director. He did uh Atlanta. Um he was like one of the main directors for Atlanta, and I think he's directed on many other shows, including like Barry and and whatnot, which apparently Barry and Atlanta were like big inspirations for this show. Really? You can kind of see well, yeah, because like have you seen Atlanta?
SPEAKER_03I have seen episodes here and there. I've never actually seen it all the way through, and I haven't seen any of Barry, although they have both been on my list of shows I need to watch and just never did.
SPEAKER_00Well, Atlanta has like every once in a while, there's like a scary episode, or it's like it's very surreal that show. There's like weird shit happening, and you just kind of like accept it, and it's just part of the storytelling. And then Barry obviously is about you know, those really dark characters like murdering people for money and just trying to get away with it. Um, and I think the DNA of those two shows are definitely in the show because, like you said, like he's he's a bad mayor, right? But like as this goes on, you sort of cheer for him. You you you want him to do the right thing, and he tries to do the right thing, right? And yeah, and all the characters. I I really like how the show brings together the three of them because they could not like dislike each other more, I feel like at the beginning, where like you had the mayor and the annoying, I don't even know what her job is, but Patricia was like his assistant, not his assistant, but someone who's like right under him, yeah. And annoying him constantly, and then like Wick obviously is being is the guy who's like, we gotta shut down the you know, the tourist season because everyone's gonna die. Shut the island down. The island's awake. And then to see their friend like their friendship evolve and evolve, and we're gonna go full spoilers into this so. Well, them and even the the officer, the police officer, like yeah, but he sort of never becomes part of the crew, like he's like he kind of just get he, I mean, he checks out the end, he's like, I'm done, I quit. Um fair. Which we actually don't understand. I don't we'll talk about that when we get to that episode, but I don't really understand what happens. Like, does he have his kid at the end? Did his was his kid born? They don't really uh we like he comes to the house and shoots Ruth and then we don't know what happened.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we don't know. The assumption is yes, like he's thinking, well, not anymore.
SPEAKER_00Maybe not, because like then we had that sacrifice thing happen and the and the storm went away, so maybe you got a right.
SPEAKER_03But um in that training video, it said that the island bell chimes for how many souls it wants, and it chimed eight times, and there were not eight sacrifices. So either people died in that storm that we didn't know about, or more's coming.
SPEAKER_00I think it's more. I think at that moment one wasn't enough to get the storm to stop, but it still needs eight more or whatever, or maybe that's what it's like.
SPEAKER_03Well, there were two, because there was the the drugie dude who also got sucked up in that, like but does that count? Yeah, the tornado thing took it. It was like a cyclone turned tornado. It was very selective.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but what I'm saying is like, does it count? Like, do you have to be in that room with whatever certain creature was behind that door? Oh, interesting point. I think it has to be there in that room. Uh um, what was I saying before that though? Oh, yeah, the way that they all come together. There's that there's that great scene, I forget what episode it is. I think it's the one where she throws the party, which is my favorite episode, but we'll I want to we'll go deeper in that in a sec. Whereas like she gets in the car with the two of them. You know, they pull up and like she gets in the car with them, and then in that moment, there's like she's been rejected by this whole group of people, and she's like, now we have our crew in the car, right? And now this is our team of people. Yeah, and like she's like she's like the guy, the mayor, uh, I forget his name, Tom, maybe? Is it Tom?
SPEAKER_03That sounds right. Basic white guy named him.
SPEAKER_00He's like, We need your help, get in. And there's like this nice moment where like she's just rejected by all of her old like sorority sisters or whatever, and um they're like, We need your help, get in the car, and she gets in, then they all drive off and have a nice moment together. Where do you want to go from this?
SPEAKER_03Like, do you want to kind of talk like episode by episode about like what worked, what didn't work, what we loved about it.
SPEAKER_00Do you want to do that?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, let's do that. Okay, so like the pilot. I think it's funny that both of us started it at different times and we're like, whatever, and then ended up returning to it. It's not like it wasn't good. Um, it just wasn't for as great of a premise. It wasn't I didn't feel the stakes. It didn't make me immediately go, I need to finish this.
SPEAKER_00But by the end of the episode, what did you still feel that way?
SPEAKER_03Um, I mean, I thought it was funny with the writer being like, oh, I get it. I said you're Nantucket and y'all want to be Salem or whatever. Um But I wasn't Again, I didn't feel the need to I knew I was gonna continue watching it because people were starting to recommend it a lot, but I just didn't it didn't leave me hanging on anything like being like, oh, I gotta see what happens next, because it was kind of like, oh, it's okay now.
SPEAKER_00But I I think that's what I like about it. I think the best shows sort of you have to sort of earn the ending in a little bit. And I think watching it a second time, I do actually think the first episode's really good. There's a lot of funny moments in the opening, especially when you're getting to know the relationships between everyone in the office and everyone in the town. And they do a really good job of like explaining everyone's personalities. I mean, they're introducing you to the mayor and like his sort of like anxiety and his anxiousness uh with getting the town ready, and sort of like how he deals with all of the crazy characters in the town, like the smoke, the girl that smoked, who also is nominated for an Emmy, is the girl that was smoking all the time. I forgot her name in the movie.
SPEAKER_03She has looked exactly the same for like 40 years. Like, do you remember the movie from I think it came out when we were in college, Domino with Kira Knightley? Yeah, I I don't think I ever saw that one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_03I loved that movie, but she was like the like mob boss mama in it and looked exactly the same. And that movie's like 30 years old now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's she's one of those people I've seen like many times before, but I couldn't tell you what movies, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. But um, she was great, but you learn that she's like the gossiper, and then like we get the relationship with him and his son pretty quick off the bat. Um and then Wick, obviously, the town, the town, uh, the old mayor who wait, Wick was the mayor previously? Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I totally missed that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty sure. Now you're making me doubt myself, but I'm pretty sure he was the old mayor. And which is part of the reason why he doesn't like Tom.
SPEAKER_03Well, why would he give up his mayorhood? Because Tom ran uncontested and Wick really cares about protecting the town.
SPEAKER_00That's a good question. I I don't know. Maybe they mentioned it and I just missed it, or maybe it'll be explained later.
SPEAKER_03Definitely gonna need a second viewing. Let's get to the bottom of this.
SPEAKER_00Maybe he wasn't the old mayor. Because this is Tom clashes with Wick, a local who insists that the arrival of a thick fog means the island is waking up. Yeah, Wick's always just been a fisherman, I thought. Maybe you're right. Maybe right. I don't know. I'll look up I'll look that up later. Um but yeah, I thought that I, you know, I I like the first episode. We I think we get introduced to the priest, right? Doesn't he say like he heard the priest bell ring or whatever? And he's like, that's not possible.
SPEAKER_03The priest storyline is a little um disconnected for me. Okay, like we have snippets of him throughout episodes, yeah, but he never really ties into what's going on with everybody else. It's like clearly he's connected to like the story of the island, but like I don't know, it just feels like a little one-off that keeps happening on the side here and there.
SPEAKER_00I guess so, but to me that's like how like great whore and Stephen King in a in a way does it, where it's like the audience knows something that the main characters don't know. And and we're we don't know everything. We obviously we're we follow the priest, he goes up to the bell and he sees the bells chained up, right? And he's like, Oh, there's no way this is wrong. And then he opens these little books from other priests, and the priests are like, you know, be careful, the island demands these things or whatever. And he's like exploring these things that we see later. He finds the room in the underneath everything, where the torch room or whatever it is, the sacrificing room. And then he but then he kills himself. Does he though? I don't know. I mean, maybe he killed himself.
SPEAKER_03One thing I do like because you were like, the audience knows something the characters don't know, but I feel like the town knows, like it's even the mayor knows he just wants to pretend he doesn't know. But I love in that that right away we're introduced to Wick, who's like we we see him from the mayor's perspective of oh, he's crying wolf, but then you see him in his environment with all the other townsfolk, and it's not like he's a pariah in the town, like he fits right in with everybody and he's at the bar with his buddies and whatnot. So you realize the mayor is the outsider, not Wick. So the mayor's not in line with what everyone else knows is happening.
SPEAKER_00But I don't know to what extent. I agree with you. I think that it's fun to have the mayor be the outsider in a way, even though he's been there for most of his life, like he definitely feels like it, and he there is a disconnect between him and the and the locals. But I don't think like the town really knows. I mean, when they in the last episode, when they find those videos of the sacrifice and Stuff like that guy, he he's fine, he's learning that for the like I don't think people realize about like the sacrifices or whatnot.
SPEAKER_03No, but I do think that everybody who lives on that island knows that the island has a history of like haunts and exactly, but it's like how many people have actually seen the haunts, how many people haven't, right? Like, like but that's that's just what I like is that like you you see Wick from the mayor's perspective first, and you're like, oh, he's crazy and he's gonna cause problems, and then nobody else in the town views him that way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, I don't know. I think I think the cop does. Yeah, maybe.
SPEAKER_03No, the cop, I don't think the cop does because he's so his whole motivation is getting his wife off this island to not have his kid on the chart.
SPEAKER_00But not till after he sees all the weird shit that's been happening, like after the party that that uh Patricia throws and um the that killer guy that's chasing her.
SPEAKER_03That party that she throws is the one moment in this why I'm like, why wasn't Patricia arrested?
SPEAKER_00Dude, we'll get there. That's why I love that episode so much. Um, let's talk about the second episode. So now we have the second episode, and this is where I I start to realize how much I'm gonna love the show because finally we have a show that is doing this thing where it's like there's an overarching story happening, but also each individual episode has its own like self-contained horror story. It's very like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was like each episode paid homage to a different king work.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, or just like classic horror work. I mean, because you can say the lodging is, you know, I guess Stephen King kind of did that with it.
SPEAKER_03But I feel like we very much have a Halloween episode, which I wouldn't consider King thing.
SPEAKER_00Um we have the the the you know, the wish, the careful what you wish for, the book thing that she finds, like that's manipulating her. That's a classic story we've seen a bunch of times.
SPEAKER_03Um, and then we have like the this episode though, the second one was probably my favorite episode.
SPEAKER_00Really? Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Because that's cool, you know when he meets the guy in the hallway, you know that that guy's a ghost. Like, there's no question. So you're prepared for that reveal. But when he busts in as the clown, I was like, oh fuck, like I jumped so high.
SPEAKER_00I love how it snap snap cuts to him waking up in the bed the next day or whatever, and then they show the video footage of him and he's just like playing games with himself and stuff. Yep.
SPEAKER_03But that's totally like that, like knowing that it's coming and him being like, No, don't come in. Like it reminded me so much of Hokum and him looking down that thing, waiting for the witch, and we know the witch is coming, but you still fucking jump out of your skin, and then he wakes up in the bed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I like I think you know, it's funny that you say you knew I I had a feeling it was obviously gonna be like a ghost or something. But when I was watching with my parents, I didn't necessarily get that the idea that they thought that too. I think it's just on the at that edge, like it could have gone either way. Like, if they had made it so he wasn't a ghost, you'd been like, whatever, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, but I think what the sh that episode does really well is like it the comedy that it plays. What's really cool about the show is that like I think it's really the first time that people are behaving in a realistic way to like craziness around them. Do you know what I mean? Like the he's getting uh is this the same episode where he like tries to get maybe it's the next episode, but he tries to get the owner of the hotel to to step into the room and he won't do it. It's no, it's that episode. It's an episode. He's like, I don't stay here. Yeah, and it's just like it's funny, and then like we'll talk about it in other episodes too. Like, everyone is acting like a human being when this when this shit happens to them. It's so funny in that way, and you don't really question like why are you running, like, why are you running back in the house or why are you doing this? It's like very much like how people behave, and they then and they find the humor in that, yeah, for sure. Like it is scary, but it's it's just so much fun to watch these characters behave this way. Um, but yeah, that was a good episode too. Was there anything else you want to talk about on that episode?
SPEAKER_03No, I just really loved that one. But even then, like I feel like the clown and the salesman that turns out to be the clown was very like it coded, like the kid seeing his dad and then the clown, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I also like how at the end of this episode, is it Wick who's like, ah, you got the clown?
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00Because there's like a bunch of different uh hauntings he could have gotten, he got the clown. Um that's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_03I know I love that whole concept of like who are you gonna get this time? Exactly. So episode three, is that the sea hag?
SPEAKER_00So yeah, episode three is the sea hag, which is also a hilarious episode.
SPEAKER_03This got me pulled in on Instagram, like being like, Okay, I should watch the show because somebody posted the clip of him seeing her in the road and being like, Can I help you? And then she starts coming at him and he just like reverses the hell out of there. And it was like smartest thing anyone has ever done in a horror. So I saw that and I was like, But that's exactly what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_00Like, that's what I mean. It's like these people are behind and not only is he reversing, he's terrified. Yeah, he's like, Nope, nope. Which what if that was just the normal person? Um, I love in this episode his relationship with Patricia, especially after he gives that woman a ride in the morning who's like there on her on the for the bachelor party or whatever, and he's like sitting in the meeting and she keeps asking him about like what woman?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we never really got a clear answer on that, did we? If she was real or if she was like the sea hack or we we do, we did. I don't remember what was it?
SPEAKER_00Is that in the Patricia episode? Yeah, she's in the Patricia episode, but at the end of that episode, remember she comes to his door and she's like, Hey, why don't you let me in? And he's like, I know what you are, like, get away from me, and then she like gets back into her Uber or whatever, and he's like, Well, that was fucking embarrassing.
SPEAKER_03But I still miss like I do remember that scene, but I guess like I guess it was like, Oh, she's just a normal woman and he's going crazy, yeah. Which makes it the humor in it even funnier.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but I love that scene with Patricia in the in the meeting where she's like grilling is like, How come you never give me a ride in the morning?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Um, but yeah, I love that sort of side, which what I kind of figured was gonna happen with with him starting to believe that she's the sea hag. And then it turns out that she's not at all, and the sea hag still comes and gets him at the end, and then Wick comes to the rescue, which is so cool, and shoots him, and then she just disintegrates all of him.
SPEAKER_03The sea hag in the ocean even reminded me of just seeing uh Evil Dead burn with the the demon in the water.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I also love like the way that he shows up for the the inaugural swim, and the guy's like, uh, we have no way to get power to the beach for the music. He's like, Why are you telling me this now?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Also, I love like what a like pathetic event that is, just in terms of like how lame it is.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. Yeah. And he wants that woman there to come watch him swim or whatever. Yeah. But see, he's a good mare, he's doing the shit. You know? He's trying, he's trying. He's a dweeb. Uh anyway, next episode, my favorite episode. The party. Beach reads, it's called.
SPEAKER_03Beach reads? Nice.
SPEAKER_00Beach reads. This is a Patricia focused one. We sort of learn, and is it this episode at the beginning where she like goes to this party and everyone's like sort of annoyed that she's there because Yeah, she goes to like some sort of like wine mixer and then everybody's talking shit about her. Yeah, because in in college there was this person who was like going around killing students, all girls, and then everyone thinks that Was it college or high school? She says maybe it was high school, and uh she was like one of the last people to get called by him, but no one believes that she got called by him. Everyone thinks she's like lying about it, and so she's like been shunned from everyone. And um, so you get this like really like empathetic scene with her where no one's talking to her at a party and she's trying to make friends, and then she leaves or whatever, and then she goes through a little library van where she has a bunch of books that she gives out to people, and one of the books is like how to how to like make friends and throw a party or something or whatever, right?
SPEAKER_03And she's like, Well, the book is something like Now's Your Turn or something like that. Yeah, that's it. Yeah, no, you're right. It's like, if you want to be popular, be the perfect party host.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. So she starts to like plan this party, and it's like which I had to rewind multiple times to figure out what was going on.
SPEAKER_03Did you see the maybe this was at the end, but when they're looking at the security footage of her sitting at the bench reading the book, and it's sped up, and then the officer's like, What the and I was like, Wait, what is he seeing? Like, am I missing something? We rewind it twice, and I was like, Oh, she's like reading like for like three days, yeah, like for 24 hours straight.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, on that park bench or whatever, which is great because they show us with her at the park bench just reading, you think, Oh, it's just a normal thing that's going on, and then later we see that she's there all day long, but just the humor that's like her sending the invite out, and then also this is an episode that comes after the last one where it's like we go back in time because at the end of the last episode she gets a voicemail mail from her from the cop who's like, send everything. It's it's it's chaos here at the at the party at the at at Patricia's party or whatever. And so then we find we like go back in time at the beginning of this episode and we figure out what happened. Um, but I love the scene where she like goes in and she's like, How many, how many people are coming to the party? And he like, oh here. And he hands her that piece of paper and she looks at it, it's like, why didn't you just tell me no one's coming? Like, why'd you hand me this piece of paper? So funny.
SPEAKER_03Uh this episode's definitely hilarious, and this is when she really likes just her comedy and her voice and her delivery. It really is very Allison Bree to me.
SPEAKER_00Dude, she is so good in the show. Like, I hope she wins. Like, she is my favorite character. Her delivery is so good. The way she walks, even she kind of like waddles everywhere she goes. Uh, but then we get to the party and she's got this tiara on, and she's like trying to get people to dance at the party, and like all the all the visiting people in, right? People are like, what is she wearing on her head? Blah blah blah blah. Um, and then there's like that scene where she's really dancing, everyone's clapping. Then did you catch this? It like cuts and it's like everyone's mouth is open and just like starts. Yeah, like in the mirror that's like yeah, really creepy. And then the cop shows up, right? And then she's making this punch, and he's like, Patricia, what the fuck are you doing?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I like how the lady's like giving her shit, the old smoking yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00She looks in the mirror and she sees she's got this like woodland like stick, like demon crowd tier on that's like super obvious. Like, what? Why didn't you tell me? And she was like, I'm trying to be supportive.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that is like the funniest part is her watching this chick like do like these animal sacrifices and all this weird shit, and being like, I was trying to support you, that's what you asked for.
SPEAKER_00I know, right? It's just like cutting up the crows and shit. And then we see the book for real. It's like this, like the book of the dead or whatever. Um, and just like the whole scene with her and the cop trying to get the people out of the water, and just the way that it's so realistic, and the cop though is just being like, What is going on? It's like, just get them out of the water. Yeah. So, like, um, that is definitely my favorite episode. It's a good one. I feel like it's the most stand standalone episode, and I just love her character so much. But at the end of that one, is that is the scene I was talking about where she feels all like, oh, she doesn't have any friends again. The party was a failure, she almost got everyone killed.
SPEAKER_03Somehow didn't get arrested for poisoning everybody, for drugging everyone.
SPEAKER_00To be fair. She didn't really drug them either.
SPEAKER_03I guess she spelled them.
SPEAKER_00She spelled them. You can't really go to go to jail for spelling someone.
SPEAKER_03But I'm pretty sure you can get something for making like a blood sacrifice punch and serving it to somebody who doesn't know they're drinking like animal blood.
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm gonna look into that. So one cop town.
SPEAKER_03Any lawyers listening? Can you tell us if that's something you can get in trouble for?
SPEAKER_00Maybe the cop just let her go. Um, but she she, you know, she's feeling dejected, and she and then Wick and and Tom show up and they're like, We need you. Get in. And she's I feel like she has that moment of like, ah, someone needs me.
SPEAKER_04Gets to be part of her gang.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh what else we got?
SPEAKER_03So after that, we get into basically two episodes of like the history of the town founder.
SPEAKER_00He's the one where he takes the shrooms.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Is that episode five?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's episode five. Which was also funny.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, yeah, that guy being like, you can hang in my like stoner room, and then it's like that disgusting ass mattress and a dirty ass blanket. I was like, good god.
SPEAKER_00And then he's like, just don't look in any mirrors.
SPEAKER_03And him accidentally dosing the wrong person.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's so funny.
SPEAKER_03I like when it cuts to him just like in the town hall meeting, just like not knowing what the fuck is going on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly or what they had just talked about. And he's just sitting there silently. And then he sees like the island at the end, right? And this is this show becomes very lost-esque too, in a way, where like at the very end of the episode, like some something is in the darkness while he's like throwing up in the bathroom, and it like comes at him and he like sees it or whatever. We don't know what it is. Um, but yeah, then we have this flashback. What do you think about this flashback episode? Which was directed by Ty West, by the way.
SPEAKER_04Ty West, who's Ty West?
SPEAKER_00He's a horror movie director. He uh he directed like X and Pearl and Maxine and Oh, okay. Um other movies.
SPEAKER_03Nice. I did like X. I never followed up with Pearl and Maxine, but I enjoyed X very much because I was like, thank you for just doing a straight slasher. We don't do that very often anymore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree. I like that movie. Um What do you think of this episode?
SPEAKER_03I enjoyed it. The I guess the the husband doesn't come back until the very end of the episode, right?
SPEAKER_00That's I think it's the next one.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00At the end of this episode, they're digging up a grave. We don't that's that we just don't know what yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um this one I it was a nice kind of change of pace. It was very hocus pocusy, which and then especially when the husband comes back, it's really hocus pocusy. Um then I like that Betty Gilpin was in it, and then I was laughing because she was in that show with Alice and Bree. And I just everything keeps going back to Alice and Bree for me for some reason with this, even though she has nothing to do with it. Um, I thought it was a nice change of pace. I was like, you know, now whenever there's like kids that are like gonna die, I'm like, oh my god, no. Um also I thought this one all those kids die on the boat except for the little But you don't find out in this episode. But you knew as soon as she put him in the water in the boat.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um I do really like how they like how you don't really know if the husband's a villain or a good guy, and even when he's like portraying himself as like the confused good guy, uh he's still kind of a bad guy.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Yeah, they keep the mystery going. Yeah. We don't know much about it. We know there's this thing around his neck that's important, this like cylinder thing, which is why they dig up the dream at the end.
SPEAKER_03It's so tense when you think like she's about to get stabbed in the bed and then he gets stabbed a billion times, and he's okay.
SPEAKER_00It's so funny though, because she like she's sitting there and like he comes in and she's like she like gives him a look and like no and then he walks around the other side to stab him. The episode is actually pretty funny. When I when I first watched it, I wasn't like super I don't think I was super focused on it and it seemed long. But when I watched it the second time, it I I appreciated a lot more. I like that they did a different aspect ratio for this episode. Oh, did they? Um, yeah, they did like a square, like a four by three. And uh I like the way it was shot. I thought she was great. She was actually really funny and just her reactions to everything, like when she comes running into the church and she's like, Okay, everybody, let's let's go.
SPEAKER_01Yes, help me.
SPEAKER_00Like it's so funny. Um, I like that she, you know, I think it it's weird to me because I I think this show is fun. They're trying to do this like mythology thing, this big mystery of like why is the island like this and stuff. I don't know. They they I think it feels more deep than it actually is. It's to me, it's like they're trying to do a lost thing a little bit, but it's not as sort of mysterious. It's just sort of like I don't know, I don't feel that erg. Like, I'm not like I have to know what what's going on in this island and why it's like full of all these haunts. Like, I don't care about that. I'm just enjoying like the sort of different genre we're getting every every episode or whatever, with a different type of haunting or whatever. Um but I do like this episode, I think it's really interesting, and it and it leads us into like one of I think the best episodes of the season two, where you see them digging up the grave of this guy who they bury alive at the in the end of the episode, um, because they they think he's the reason why this plague is happening in town. What you kind of is kill him. But is he?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's why when his bloodline dies, the curse dies.
SPEAKER_00I mean that's what they think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I guess. Well, it didn't he inherit the curse from somebody else too? I can't remember. Well, there was a chance to do it.
SPEAKER_00I don't think it's been super explained, but there is sort of uh the idea that if his bloodline ends, the curse will end. But I don't know, is that is that the actual thing? Is there another way to to end this curse? I'm sure there is. We'll figure it out at some point.
SPEAKER_03But um I love this episode though. This one like the one where yeah where they're taking him out to sea in the coffin.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I love the opening of the episode where they're having the conversation where he's finally like not stoned on mushrooms anymore. And and they're like, We dug him up. Like, you you dug him up. And he's like, Is that him over there? And they're like, No, he's upstairs. Like, why would why did you take him out of the coffin? They're like, he's still alive.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that was a great scene.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And then just when he goes into that room and it's so creepy, right? He's like sitting on that bed, and then he's like writing a note for him and gives it to him, and then he and he writes a note and gives it back, and then he's like, Oh, I forgot to, I forgot to write something, and he realizes you can talk.
SPEAKER_03It was very hocus pocus to me because it reminded me of the like her husband, that Billy, whatever, that they dug up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What was his name? Billy. Um I forget what it is. But yeah, and then she like comes in, Patricia comes in the room and just like, I forgot my purse. She just grabs the first. This is like the one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Yeah, it's really um, but yeah, really cool episode. They basically tell him he's a little old and decrepit, and he's like, if you die, this curse dies, everyone can be free or whatever. And he like agrees, he agrees to do it.
SPEAKER_03He's like, Okay, isn't he the one who kind of tells him like if you maybe he is take me past, like this will end? Like, yeah. I think he's the one who tells him, which makes it more interesting than that, like you can't stop that will to live.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, when they're going and uh they get him back in the coffin, they promise him, like, we'll just put you in the coffin while we get you on the ship, we don't want anyone to see you, and then we'll let you out.
SPEAKER_03But then Oh my god, this part's so funny when he like goes to Wick and he's like he wants to come out, and Wick's like, don't ever blah blah blah blah blah and he's like, uh, so I already did.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because then this whole like horror story of like how like people always fight for their lives, and and he like his friend he kicked away because he was trying to swim to the surface one time when he almost drowned, and his friend was holding on to him. Yeah, and then he's like, I already let him out. And then he looks up and he's clearly able to hear them having this conversation. So just like eating food at the table. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's just I love how they do the whole interaction with him of being like playing along, but then like deciding like he's like not actually gonna let them kill him. It's so funny.
SPEAKER_00I think I but I always took it like he no, he I think he was going to sacrifice himself, but then he like he starts to get scared.
SPEAKER_03But then in these moments where he's like, you can just see in his face he's like completely changed his mind.
SPEAKER_00Well, he's he starts to eat food, right? He he gets his strength back. He and then he uh he's talking about like what his last thoughts will be. Will my last thoughts be of my children? Will I say, God, please let me live? And they're like looking at each other like uh. Uh and then they have like a little obviously that there's so there's this line in the sea. If you pass it, if you're not born there, you'll probably die, right? Yep. And so they're getting close to the line, and so he like pushes Wick into the water before they get to that line, and then they cross the line and he opens the coffin and it's just like bones in there now.
SPEAKER_03I love how Wick is like just prepared to go it and take him to end the curse. Like Wick really does like he's a great character.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he is. I that and that's what another like great thing about the show is like like you were saying, like the first episode, you're like, I don't know if I'm into this, but you learn all these characters and then you kind of see how they're like bond and how the relationships grow and how like their motivations change, and like Wick, who seemed like a crazy local who maybe he's right about everything, doesn't mean he's not crazy, how much he like actually is like a really good person and like cares and loves his town and loves his town, and he he has got this like ex-girlfriend that he clearly is still sort of in love with, who's married now, and um and he and obviously like I think he's I think Tom is like earning his respect a little bit too um, which is nice. Um, and then the last couple episodes are kind of a blur to me, to be honest. Like, oh, we have the slasher episode.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the slasher episode, this was the only episode that actually like scared me.
SPEAKER_00Oh really?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and it's funny because it's like I don't know. Well, I mean, I've I've said this before that like ghost stuff and possession stuff, like those movies. Don't scare me, like screams are my favorite and slashers are my favorite because they will scare me. And this one 100% did that. It was very Halloween and it totally creeped me the fuck out.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Yeah. But it also was hilarious.
SPEAKER_03Yes. And I love how Patricia too, she's like, Alright, fine. I didn't get the phone calls, but he did try to kill me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Like she finally confesses that she lied a little bit. Yeah. I also love how, like, again, this show is like so realistic in a lot of ways, where like she grabs the taser. Like she knows someone's in the house, right? And so she like immediately goes down the stairs, grabs the taser. The taser's got like 2% charge on it, which is hilarious. And then she like comes out of the house and she's just waiting, and then he's she sees him come out, and then she just starts running. Yeah. Just running, knocking everyone's door.
SPEAKER_03I just love that she tases that bitch. That's like the funniest part. I know. It's like she really is awful.
SPEAKER_00She's like, what?
SPEAKER_03She sucks.
SPEAKER_00And then she runs out the door.
SPEAKER_03Um, it's like she's kind of found her balls now that she found her like her gang.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Like we can see like how awesome Patricia is. And she has this great idea. She goes to the gas station and she's like pouring gas on the ground. Well, first she can't, it's not working. She runs inside and she's like, 20 on pump one, please. She runs back out and like sprays it all over the ground. And everyone in the in the gas station is like, what the fuck is she doing? Um, and then she lights him up, which is awesome. And then that montage of her holding the gun to his head, waiting for him to come back to life. Like she's in the ambulance with the gun to his head, she's in the hospital with a gun to she's in the morgue, like as she goes into the cremator, right? With the she never moves the gun. Like, so funny.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, she really is a good character because she's flawed, but you like really want her to succeed and like find respect and friends. And she does. Exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I feel like them the three main characters are like that in a lot of ways. Like, there's like you learn a lot about their motivation. Even when you find out about, and I don't know what episode this happens when you when you find out the truth about um Tom's son's mom.
SPEAKER_03That's the final episode. Is that the final well the that that she hadn't died until like two years after he was born? That's the ninth episode. That's the one after this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Basically, like her.
SPEAKER_03It did not surprise me at all. Did you see that coming? No.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, I there always was like some weird thing where like she died in childbirth or whatever. And then and then he finds that picture of her still alive while he's a baby. Um, and you learn that she kind of like went crazy, had a stroke or something.
SPEAKER_03That's even so funny when Tom gets home and he's like, Oh my god, you went into the garage, and he's like, No, I found this in your stuff. What's in the garage or in the basement or whatever? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, yeah, that's really funny. But they have this conversation, and he confesses everything, and then they hug and stuff. Like, it's a really honest conversation, I feel like, and I think that's where the show really succeeds. It's like there's all this weird shit happening, there's all this like ghost stuff, but at the end of the day, it's like really a character show about all of their relationships.
SPEAKER_03And all the characters are so well developed, like, there's not really a character who falls flat, I would say. No, even characters who aren't even as big a part of the show, like the drug dealer, he's just still so fucking hilariously well developed, and like just his brief time on screen, you know who that guy is completely.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Is this the episode where they discovered the the tutorial video of the sacrifices? Or is that the finale?
SPEAKER_00I think it's the last episode because the finale is an hour long almost. So it's like an extra long episode. You're right. So this one really there's this huge storm. Do you want to say it? Sorry, I feel like I'm talking a lot.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. I think the the episode nine, I'm pretty sure that just ends with his kid confronting him about knowing the mom's life, and then that conversation happens in the finale, not in that episode, I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03Is that right? No? Maybe? I don't think so. All right, whatever. Anyways, finale. Maybe maybe. I don't remember that much, but once they get that tutorial video thing though, and the up like when you said lost earlier, I was like, oh, I didn't really get that reference. But now that I'm thinking about it with like the tutorial vids, it is very much like when they find like the bunker and lost and all of that.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Yes. That, especially the yeah, the videos, because it was like the Dharma videos, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, like the island being awake. I was like, oh, I I guess. But then yeah, that tutorial video was like, oh yeah, that it's like the two together is very, very lost.
SPEAKER_00Totally. Um I think we forgot to mention that during this after they they get the guy, the old dude who's like lived for hundreds of years or whatever, to die, and that they think the curse is over, and then the boogeyman coming back basically proves that it's not over, right? There's somebody else who's alive, who's a descendant of this guy who needs to die, right?
SPEAKER_03And that's right. At one point, really think about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're all think it's fine, and then like at the boogeyman, and that's why Patricia's like, it's not over yet.
SPEAKER_03That's right. I didn't even think about that as being like a very obvious, like, oh no, it's not over. But I mean, you knew because of the show, you just know logically it's not gonna be over. But I didn't even think about it.
SPEAKER_00You're like, wait, there's three episodes left, what's going on here? And but he buys his kid like the Boston Red Sox tickets because he wants to finally take him to like a boxing game, right? And that's when they have that conversation. Um but they have the smoking lady, his like assistant or whatever, do a gene genealogy on on uh you know this dude. I forget his name now.
SPEAKER_03The founder. I just call him the founder.
SPEAKER_00The founder, yeah, the founder, thank you. And honestly, I think this scene is too long, it goes on fucking long.
SPEAKER_03It was yes, it does. It like way too long. And also, like it was it was uh Patricia who put together that like the missing finger meant that it was the daughter who survived, not oh yeah, the wife. Um, but I feel like that for a minute was a little bit confusing at first. You're like, wait, what? Like, like it didn't just fall naturally into like, oh fuck, yeah. Like I was like, wait, what is she talking about? And you get it, but they kind of have to go explain it further, like really elaborate for it to be like, okay, that's what it was. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, there was that sh that that painting in the in the hotel where you see like a boat out in like a in the water, and then you know it was gonna come back because they focused on that painting.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
SPEAKER_00And I remember being like, why are they focusing on this girl? Like, should I know that? And then literally, like in episode nine, we see the flashback of the kid starting to die in the boat with uh what what's her name, the blonde girl?
SPEAKER_03The stepmom, Betty Gilpin.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Betty Gilpin. And one of the daughters like swims away, right? And apparently survives, and it ends up being like not Ruth, but Ruth is a descendant of of all of the people.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like great, great, great, great, great, great. Yeah. Which uh, I mean, like it is funny when she's going through the genealogy and she's like, inbred, lesbians, inbred, lesbians, inbred, lesbians.
SPEAKER_00But it was like Patricia's like, can you not say lesbian? It's like, oh, I can't say lesbian now. She's like, it's the way you're saying it.
unknownIt's so funny.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but like, you're right though. It's like you can do a couple of lines and not have to like, we don't need to actually watch the body. I just thought like the joke, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It was like the family guy joke where it's like, okay, I don't need to see all of this. But yeah, we find out it's Ruth is like the last one.
SPEAKER_03So he like Who were you guessing as they were figuring it out?
SPEAKER_00Because first Clo 100% I knew it was the kid.
SPEAKER_03I knew it was the kid. I mean, I I guessed his wife. Well, first we were like, maybe it's Wick. And then we were like, Oh, I bet it's the wife. But didn't even really think about that, what that implied for his kid until it was like, oh, that means like he got off his kid. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03But she's obviously I didn't expect Ruth to be I didn't expect Ruth to be his wife's mom. I just expected that the mom was a descendant.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I didn't think I didn't expect that either. But anyway, you know, he drugs her and he drugs Ruth.
SPEAKER_03And it's so fucking funny when he's like saying his goodbye, and then she's like, anyway, whoa, whoopside.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's clearly not gonna kill her. Like it's clearly just gonna make her confess the truth or whatever. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Which I love because he like he sees in her notes, like, don't mix these two pills. But it I was like, I looked at Claire and I was like, okay. It doesn't say what the side effects will be, but if a doctor was prescribing two pills to a patient that were instantly deadly if mixed, the doctor would not prescribe those two pills to a patient as pills to be taken every day by that patient, especially an elderly person. Like, no fucking way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well, that's why they weren't gonna kill her.
SPEAKER_03Like it was it was basically that's why I think it's so funny that he's just such a dweeb that he assumes if he mixes mixed these pills that she's gonna die and not that she's just gonna fucking like blast off and be the fuck out of it.
SPEAKER_00I mean, we all thought that. That's what's so brilliant about it. Like, you think that you're like, oh, this is always gonna kill her. Like, that's just good riding.
SPEAKER_03I didn't think she was I didn't ever think though that she was at risk from him. Because one, we know he's like a total pussy, and two, like, as soon as I saw the doctors know and what he was gonna do, I was like, she's just gonna get really fucking high. Like, I was definitely expecting like that she was not gonna die from it, and that it would that was what was gonna be the funny part was that he's getting all emotional and she ain't dead.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I didn't think she was gonna die either. Like, I th I figured something would happen. I don't think he's a pussy necessarily, but he's just because it's so easy to kill people, you know. Well, you can't kill someone.
SPEAKER_03You know, shut up, Ben. We've been watching a lot of horror. It doesn't seem that hard in a lot of horror movies to kill people.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I think this is changing, you know.
SPEAKER_03Become so desensitized.
SPEAKER_00It's easy to kill someone.
SPEAKER_03Murder is easy. Yeah, what do you mean you're I'm not saying murder is easy, I'm saying we know the mayor has never had it in him to be a killer.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03So, which made the cop shooting her so much more shocking.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Yeah, you know, it's funny. Like, I'm glad they, I guess they didn't kill the old lady, but I thought it was kind of a cop out that they shot her, but then she was still alive. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like we're gonna try to kill her. Oh, she's fine. Oh, now we're gonna shoot her. Oh, but she's fine. Like, it's like Well, we don't know that she's fine.
SPEAKER_03She's bleeding out on the floor.
SPEAKER_00She was, I mean, they wouldn't have that scene if she wasn't fine. I I feel like we I feel like she'll be in season two, for sure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I hope so. It'll be interesting though to see how it all comes together because you have this cop who's not really questioning Patricia. I mean, I guess he did bring her down for questioning, but it's like, why wasn't there more expected out of the um bewitching everybody? And then he's like, I have to.
SPEAKER_00That sounds insane.
SPEAKER_03I know. Because that sounds insane. And then he's like, I quit, and also I'm shooting this old bitch so that my kid can be a like it's just his character, I think, is the least developed, and while the character has real motivations, I don't I don't think all the scenes leading up to this necessarily fit for him.
SPEAKER_00I 100% honestly, like I I'm bummed at the way that his character was handled then because I really liked him for a long time. And I thought the scene where in which she like confesses to him like everything that's going on, and he's like, I quit, I'm out. Like, it didn't play as funny as it should have. Um, it was more like, is this like I'm not laughing, but I get what they're trying to be funny here, but it's just not working. And then he just becomes so unlikable at that at that point where he kind of becomes an antagonist, which sucks. Like, I I would rather him be on their team, but I mean I get why the motivation is there, but then I'm sure it was like the plan from the very beginning.
SPEAKER_03Oh, let's have the cop who seems like the good guy end up becoming the bad guy in the end, and the mare who seems like a jackass end up becoming a good guy at the end. Like, you know, you know that's intentional, but it just like all these characters are flawed and they all have things that we love about them, except for this guy. You like you like him, and then you're like, no, he's flawed, and I don't like him anymore.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I hope that there is some redemption for it if he's in season two. Like, I hope there's something that makes me like him again. But the way where we left it in this episode or in this in this season, I was like, I really don't like this guy anymore. I don't want him to be around anymore. Yeah. Which is a bummer because I did like him a lot in the beginning. Um But I think that's also what's really cool about the show. And I think when when they say that this was inspired by Barry and stuff, like you've never seen it, but Barry is very much like a show where like you're watching people that are terrible do terrible things, but you want to keep watching it. And in this show, like the idea of good and bad, the only bad thing that exists is like literally the spirits that are after them. Like everyone is like struggling with like insecurity or um like confidence problems or trying to be an overbearing parent, and like all this stuff that we get as human beings. Yeah, there is no like Captain America character, there's no character that's just like I am good no matter what, I'll always do the right thing and cheer for me. Even Wick, you know, he has some uh issues too sometimes, I think. And and I think that's where the strength of the show is because like they do develop and you start to understand why they do the things they do and why they behave the way that they do, and you start to cheer for them and root for them and stuff like that. Like Patricia, for example, this character that seems really annoying and aloof at the beginning, like now you like care so much about her and like her being happy and seeing how competent she actually is and stuff like that. Like this it the show is really good in that way. Instead of just like giving you like a Jack character from Lost or like a Sawyer character, like someone who's always gonna be like sort of evil, like these people feel more real than that.
SPEAKER_03Yes, they all feel very real, except for maybe the cop. Well, if the cop even does at the beginning, at the end, it doesn't feel believable based on what we've seen of him before leading up to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he he's very quick to believe there's weird shit going on. Like if someone told me that, I'd be like, okay, uh let's just have my baby. Like, what are we doing? Um But yeah. But I love this show. Like, I I'm really bummed that seasons are so short now. Because I could have sat there and watched another five episodes of this, like easily. Um and I think the strength of the show is having every episode sort of be its own thing as at the same time as having this over overarching storyline. I think that's the way to do shows, and honestly, as much as like I like Stranger Things and stuff, like I do wonder like what they could have done Stranger Things like that. They could have done like every there's like a weird thing every week, but there's also this other like long like they didn't have to do this very serialized thing that we started doing with streaming shows.
SPEAKER_03I mean, that's what I loved about Fall of the House of Usher was how it's like each episode focuses on a different character and a different story, but the whole main story is coming together in the background.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Like that's the way to do shows, and like I just I miss the three-act structure of of TV TV. Like I find myself getting bored when it's just like a scene after scene after scene after scene after scene, and that episode just ends at that scene for whatever reason, and then I start the new one, and it's just a scene. It's like there's no I don't feel like I'm take I'm being taken along this sort of like ride, this sort of like up and down of cliffhanger and and you know driving towards a climax for the episode. Every episode I feel like in TV should be that.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I mean that's how we were we were literally taught to write because that was like the set agreed upon structure for this is how television works. And then girls came out and it was all mumble core after that.
SPEAKER_04Everyone wanted mumblecore.
SPEAKER_00But even if you think about like the Lord of the Rings, like I could sort of watch those movies back to back because each movie feels like it's got this structure to it. It's not just like scenes and then it just ends there. Like there's a climax that's gonna be a good thing.
SPEAKER_03It's successful because you could jump in with somebody at any one of these episodes, and no, you don't have the entire background story, but there's enough going on in the immediate episode story to be a part of it and want to watch and not be like, oh, I'm jumping in, it's middle of a show, I don't want to pay attention because I have no idea what's going on. Like, you don't need that, yeah. But it's like enough going on that you're like, you want it. So then you're like, well, I gotta go back now and and start this from the beginning to figure out how we got here.
SPEAKER_00I wonder what it does to people's attention spans. Because, like, I you know, there's like this whole mandate at at Netflix where like you have to make sure that everything's explained constantly because people are on their phones. But I wonder if they decided to to structure their episodes in this way where like each episode was a standalone thing, people would maybe not look at their phones as much. I and I do wonder why, because Widows Bay was like number one on Apple for a long time, and I wonder if part of that is because you can just watch an episode, feel a sense of completeness, you know, maybe start the next one or maybe go to bed and then watch the next one the next day, but like you're not just zoning out really, you're paying attention and you want to pay attention. Yeah, you know, so the show has a lot going for it.
SPEAKER_03It really does. I like the 19 Emmys, I was like actually shocked by because I was like, this is really good, but I did not expect it to like just be like sweeping. Yeah. Every time they did like a shot from the water of the full island, there were like little mountain ranges, and I was like, I wonder if they call those the widow's teeth.
SPEAKER_00I don't know, is there anything else we want to say? Like, I think you were right with how inspired by Stephen King this is. But just like all sort of like supernatural. Like, we haven't really gotten a supernatural show like this in a long time. Sure, we have like Fall Fall of the House of Usher and stuff, but those are like just straight-up horrors.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Mike Flanagan does not have comedy in his well, there's like he has like some my minimal moments of com comedic relief, but this is like a comedy.
SPEAKER_00But even the but the I mean, like more like every episode is like it's it's its own like new like when was the last time we had something like that? My sister was talking about Midnight Club, which I never watched.
SPEAKER_03Also Mike Flanagan.
SPEAKER_00So Mike Flanagan's trying to make all his shows the same.
SPEAKER_03Like that's also how you know Haunting of Hill House is it's like there is the main story going on, but every episode focuses on a specific character. That's both Haunting of Hill House and then the Blind Manor. That's Midnight Club, which he did in between uh it's also uh Midnight Mass. They're all the same way that like that's totally a Mike Flanagan move, and he's brilliant. Like, I love his book.
SPEAKER_00Which by the way, I don't know if you realize this, but the the guy who was the priest in Midnight Mass is the founder.
SPEAKER_04Who is the founder? And I had to look it up and was like, shut the fuck up. No way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he did a good job, especially when he came back and he was all decrepit, like the voice change and everything. Like he was really good in it. He was that's the other thing. The show's great acting in it, too. Great directing, great acting, great writing, like all around, just a great show. Um, any predictions for next season? I know we gotta wrap this up, but what do you think we'll get?
SPEAKER_03I think it's probably gonna take a more political turn, and it's gonna be about uh the mayor versus the police officer with Patricia and Wick being supporting characters who aren't the only ones who also know the truth, and this political dialogue of these things are still happening. So, do we decide to become a town that continues the sacrifice? Or obviously, like the mayor wants to stop it because his kid's now in the bloodline, and so you know, I I think it's just gonna be more about politics and but still focus on each episode will have like a new kind of haunt. I hope.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I I think that's the way to go.
SPEAKER_03If it loses that structure, it would be a really big bummer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think we'll get deeper probably into like the mythology the mythology of the island or whatever, but I do I don't if they gave up that I would be very disappointed. But I think the only way to get the mayor on board is to well if he okay, so if he has his son on the island, then he's gonna be targeting the mayor's son, right? So I think a lot of the show will be probably about hiding that truth from the cop, potentially. Right? Like making sure the cop doesn't find out that it his son is the last. He does tell the cop though that Ruth wasn't the end of the bloodline. But that's it. Yeah, but he doesn't say. So the cop has to figure out for himself what who is then, right? Like he's gotta put the pieces together. And he's a cop, he's a detective, so maybe he will, but I don't think it'll be right away. It'll be part of like his story arc for the next season, probably.
SPEAKER_03It's interesting because you have two attempted murderers now who are going to be at odds with one another about how to handle this.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. What are they gonna do about Ruth? Who like clearly the cop shot? I mean, how do they how do they stay out of jail? Like it's the cop's word against the mayor's word.
SPEAKER_03Nobody's gonna go to jail because it's the cop and the and the mayor.
SPEAKER_00Maybe, maybe.
SPEAKER_03And they're just gonna be like, Ruth, you took too many drugs and shot yourself in the neck. You mixed your medications.
SPEAKER_00She'll be like, I don't even know I had a gun. Um any other final thoughts?
SPEAKER_03Yes, it was fucking hilarious when he's finally at Ruth's house. And she's like, and this is where your son sleeps, and that's an escape ladder he asked for in case there were fires.
SPEAKER_00Or just a picture of the car on the wall. And boys love cars. Yeah. I picked that up at a garage sale. So funny. Oh, Ruth. Sweet, sweet Ruth. Yeah, we didn't really talk about the son a lot. He's a good character too. Um, it's hard pressed to find a bad character in this show.
SPEAKER_03He's so funny when he's in that episode when he's going up to the house of the uh slasher killer guy. Yeah, and then gets stopped by the cop from breaking in, and he's like, Thank god, I'm so sorry, blah, blah, blah.
SPEAKER_04And he's like, Hey, when I'm walking back to the car, can I scream, fuck you, pig?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's like, No. That was hilarious.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's funny. Um, anyway, that's Widow's Bay. We love it. Did Chloe love it?
SPEAKER_03She did, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Our honorary third member.
SPEAKER_03Uh so far, I haven't met anybody who watched it and was like, nah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Even my parents loved it, which is surprising.
