One came wrapped in a perfect physique and a morning ritual that sounds ancient but isn't — because when the body doing the talking looks like that, nobody stops to ask where the evidence is. Both got something right. Both got something dangerously wrong. And neither one told you how to tell the difference. This week, Alexandria breaks down the mixed-accuracy post — the most common and most convincing kind of wellness misinformation — and brings in the real history behind what your body actually needs from water, salt, and citrus. Last episode I asked you to do one thing before you tried any face mask you saw online. Ask who's selling it and what they're not telling you. This episode, I want to ask you something harder. Not what you're putting on your face, what you're putting down your throat, and whether you ever once thought about the road it travels to get where it's going. Because I hadn't, not really, not until I started working on this episode, and it hit me sideways, mid-sentence, while I was researching something else entirely. Hold that thought. We'll come back to it. But right now, I've got something on my mind. Two men on the social media pages, two completely different costumes, and they're both using the exact same trick. And one honest thing before we get into it, because I think you deserve to know how this season is actually unfolding, not just the polished version. I built this season to live with the Celts and the Pigs, deep ancestral work, slow scholarship, the kind of research that doesn't care what's trendy. And somewhere in the middle of doing that, I started actually looking at what was circulating on social media. And I realized the history alone wasn't enough anymore. We need both the root and the correction in the same breath. So this season is widening, not abandoning its plan. The Celtic and Pick Thread stays in front. But a healthy, critical view of social media posts is going to write alongside it, not instead of it. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the posts that we see on social media have a grain of truth or they have their roots in historically verified remedies. However, the problem is they only give you tidbits. They don't give you the context or why or how. Just a promise that if you do this, very simple, straightforward recipe, your life is going to change. But that's not the truth. That's not the whole story. And I wanted you to hear that I'm going to be introducing this shift from me plainly instead of having you just noticing it happen within the podcast. I'd like to be up front with you that now we are going into kind of a new realm. The point is not to debunk, but it is to connect the history, correct the social media posts, and encourage everybody to really take a hard look at what is being given to us. Are we embracing this because it has a pretty package? Whether it be a package from the store or a package from the individual telling you about this simple remedy, we have to be careful and we have to look after our body and do the research for ourselves to make sure that we are investing in something that is actually going to work, that we're not just following the rabbit hole of more promises that can't ever be fulfilled. So let's start with the first one that really drew my attention. It's a handsome gentleman. I'll give him that. Diet and exercise will not touch. People come to him in tears, he says. Grateful after a couple of weeks, 10 pounds lighter. Be sure to follow him. There's a link in the bio. Oh, and there is also tea if you want it. Here's what I want you to notice first before we even get to the baking soda. Notice what's doing the convincing. It's not a study. It's not a source. It's him. The body and the frame is the argument. Nobody is fact-checking a teaspoon of baking soda when the man holding that spoon looks like that. That's worth sitting with because it's a different kind of trick than the one that we've flagged in the show. We've talked about credentials and doctors. This is something else, proof that doesn't need anyone to believe a claim, because nobody's arguing with a body that looks like that. The physique doesn't tell you the baking soda did anything. It tells you he trains, he eats with discipline, and he has genetics that respond to both. None of that is in the teaspoon. All of it is doing the teaspoon's marketing. Now picture a different post, different account. Not a six-pack in sight. Instead, a stethoscope graphic, a clipboard emoji. Doctors are warning you about this. And we've talked about these lists in the last episode. A list that's maybe 60% right, dressed up with zero sourcing and a fake clinical aesthetic. Put the muscle man and put the doctor's threat side by side, and you'll see it. Same architecture, different building material. One borrows proof from a body, one borrows authority from a costume. Neither one shows you a single source. Both are betting you won't ask, because the packaging already answered the question for you. Let's give baking soda its deal, because there is real chemistry here, and pretending otherwise would make us no better than the post that we are evaluating. Sodium bicarbonate is a genuine antacid. It neutralizes stomach acid. That's not folklore. That's the same compound the FDA recognizes an over-the-counter heartburn relief. So when Mr. Mussel says it calms acid, he's not lying. He's just not telling you the rest of the label. Here's the rest of the label. The generally recognized safe range is half a teaspoon to one teaspoon, dissolved completely in a full glass of water. Not the steaming half glass in his real. Mr. Mussel's already at the very top edge of what's considered safe for a single dose. And his video gives you zero information about how often. That's the gap. Frequency is where this stops being a kitchen remedy and starts being a habit with consequences. Clinical sources are consistent on this. Medical supervision becomes necessary if you're using this for more than two weeks because the risk of metabolic alkalosis, sodium retention, and electrolyte imbalance climbs the longer and more often you take it. This isn't a once and done caution. It scales with use. There's a story I came across while researching this that I want to tell you because it's not hypothetical. A physician once treated a patient for stubborn high blood pressure that nothing seemed to explain until it came out that she'd been taking a heaping teaspoon of baking soda daily for heartburn, a habit she picked up from her grandmother. Once she stopped, her blood pressure responded to treatment again. That's not a scare story. That's what happens when something genuinely helpful gets used like a vitamin instead of what it actually is. A medicine with a dose and a ceiling. And one more piece almost nobody mentions, don't take this within two hours of any medication. Lowering stomach acid changes how your body absorbs other drugs, sometimes slowing it down, sometimes speeding it up. And if you're on a regular prescription, that's not a footnote. That's the whole reason timing exists on a label. Remember what I said at the top? Then something hit me sideways while I was researching this episode. Here it is. I have a Skatsky ring. I have eosinophilic esophagitis. I have been managing both for a while now. And somewhere in the middle of pulling together this episode, it actually hit me for maybe the first time how little I think about the pathway. I think about the gut all the time. I think about blood sugar. I think about inflammation, downstream, the destination. I chew carefully because I know food can catch, but I don't think about the esophagus itself as a structure that things travel through on the way to all of that. A lining, a passage, something that can narrow, something that can inflame, something that has its own relationship to whatever I send down it. And I'm not telling you to go talk to your doctor about this, but if you do have any kind of health concerns with the esophagus, you definitely should. I'm telling you, I already am, that conversation is already happening in real time for me, because I have a structural reason to ask different questions about anything I add to my morning, including a teaspoon of baking soda. I haven't tried yet, on purpose, until I've had that conversation. And if you have GERD or SCATS-Kearing or EOE or any condition that touches the esophagus, I'm not going to tell you what to do either. I'm telling you what I'm doing and asking you to consider your own pathway, the way I'm finally considering mine. Because here's the thing about additives: we think about dice, we think about sugar, we think about what's going to happen once something reaches the stomach or the gut. We almost never think about the 15 seconds before that. The road is not the destination, but the road is real too. It has a lining, it has a job, and almost nothing on your feet is going to ask you to think about it. Because the road doesn't make for a good before and after photo. Now, the give back, because I'm not just going to leave you with a correction on a post. I'm going to leave you with something true to replace it. And I'll be honest with you about something, because it's the kind of honesty this whole show is built on. I went looking for one tidy northern European ritual that combined salt, lemon, and water, the way that Mr. Muscle's reel does. I could not find it. Not because it doesn't exist somewhere, but because I couldn't verify it. And I'm not going to hand you a fake history just because it would make a cleaner story. So instead, I'm giving you three real things. Each one stands on its own. None of them need Mr. Mussel's ritual to be true. Salt, because this one is genuinely, deeply northern European, off the coast of Brittany in a region called Grande. People have been harvesting salt the same way for over 2,000 years. Wooden rigs, clay bottom pools, sun and wind doing the work the way they always have. That's Celtic salt. That's not a marketing word. That's the actual lineage of the people who first worked that coastline. It was traded across Roman Europe, prized through the Middle Ages, and it's still harvested by hand today, by families who've done this for generations. When you use a real, unrefined sea salt instead of stripped table salt, you're not following Mr. Mussel's ritual. You're touching something with 2,000 years of continuous, verifiable practice behind it. In citrus, lemon's history is just as real, but it doesn't belong to Northern Europe. And I want to say that plainly, instead of stretching the truth to make the season's map look neater than it is, citrus belongs to one of the most dramatic medical stories in maritime history. As far back as the 1560s, a physician in Flanders documented that sailors from northern Europe would cure themselves of scurvy by eating citrus the moment they reached Spanish ports, long before anybody understood why. By 1747, a naval surgeon named James Lind ran what's considered one of the first controlled clinical trials in medical history. And the pair of sailors given oranges and lemons recovered while the others didn't. It took the Royal Navy until 1867 to make daily citrus rations the law for every sailor at sea. That's not folklore. That's documented, hard won life or death medicine. It just belongs to the sea, not to the northern European earth the season is built around. And there's a second thread. Even further back, for 2,000 years, Western medicine ran on humoral theory, the idea that food and temperament had to be kept in balance, and citrus had its place there too, cutting richness, balancing what the old physicians called a phlegmatic dish. You can still taste that logic today every time someone puts lemon on a fish without knowing why it works. We haven't built that thread out fully on this show yet. Humorism, Ayurveda, Agni, all of it, but we will. Northern Europe is where this season stands and looks out from. It's not a wall of what's allowed in, though. The history of how humans have tried to heal themselves is one long, connected conversation, and we're going to keep following it season after season. And then there's water, which, unlike salt and citrus, I almost let off the hook as just biology. Blood volume, kidney function, the literal mechanics of everything else we've talked about this season. All true, but the Celts and the Picts didn't stop at biology, and neither should we. Across Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, there are wells, thousands of them, some still visited today, that weren't just where people filled a bucket. They were treated as thresholds, sacred sites, places where the ordinary world and something older and stranger touched. People walked around a set number of times, sunwise, said their prayers, drank or bathed at the right moment, and left something behind, a coin, a strip of cloth tied to the tree growing beside the water. Whatever the Picts called their own version of this further north, the instinct was the same. Water wasn't a substance you consumed without thinking. It was a presence you approached with a little respect, and maybe, if you believe in such things, a little fairy dust. I'm not asking you to tie a clue to a tree this morning. No, if that's your practice, I'm not stopping you. I'm asking you to notice what the ritual actually understood underneath the magic, that water deserved attention, not just consumption, that the body, the emotion you carry to the well, and the land the well sits on were never three separate things to these people. They were one moving system. We've said it before on this show, and we'll keep saying it because it's the whole spine of what we do here. The body is not separate from the feeling, and the feeling is not separate from the place. So here's where I landed practically. Eight ounces of water, slowly, first thing in the morning, not 16. I'm walking that back. It's a lot to ask of an empty stomach. Salt, real salt, on your food, and with 2,000 years of Britain hands behind it. Citrus for what it actually does, vitamin C and a little digestive brightness, honestly labeled, is not ours to claim this season. And maybe while you drink that water, 30 seconds of actually noticing it, not performing gratitude for the camera, just noticing. The Celts didn't need a study to tell them that water mattered. They built a relationship with it. We can at least manage a little attention. So here's what I want to leave you with every single time, starting now and every episode after this one. You are already doing it. You're here, aren't you? That's the muscle. Use it on the next thing that crosses your feed before it crosses your judgment. That's not me asking you to trust me instead of Mr. Muscle or the doctor authority. That's me asking you to keep doing exactly what you brought here today. Pause. Ask who's talking and why.
