Most people think aging is something that happens to them.

A slow, unavoidable decline determined mostly by genetics.

The science says otherwise.

In this episode of the Stable Health Podcast, Sharon explores the myths that keep people from understanding what longevity research actually shows about aging, healthspan, and the factors that influence how we grow older.

From genetics and dementia prevention to strength training, fasting, supplements, and the habits shared by some of the longest-lived populations in the world, this conversation separates evidence from assumption and optimism from reality.

You'll learn why lifespan and healthspan are not the same thing, what the hallmarks of aging are, why muscle may be one of the most important predictors of future independence, and why the foundations of healthy aging remain surprisingly simple.

This isn't about chasing immortality.

It's about building the version of yourself that will exist decades from now.

Because the choices you make today are shaping the quality of the years ahead.

Stay stable.

Here is a question I want you to sit with for a moment. When you think about getting older, what do you see? Up to 80% of the factors that determine how you age are modifiable. 80%. Genetics accounts for roughly 20 to 25%. The rest is built or broken by choices, habits, and healthcare decisions made across a lifetime. Longevity science is the study of why we age. Researchers have identified hallmarks like cellular senescence and mitochondrial dysfunction. These are not a fixed biological destiny. They are a biological response to how you live. Myth 1. Aging is mostly genetic. This is the most paralyzing myth, and it is wrong. Twin studies show genetics accounts for only a small fraction of lifespan. You are not a prisoner of your DNA. You are a product of how you live inside it. Myth 4. Strength training is for young people. Muscle mass is a primary driver of functional independence. Resistance training at any age builds muscle and metabolic function. Exercise is the closest thing to a longevity drug that exists. Myth 5. Cognitive decline is inevitable. It is not. Up to 40% of dementia cases are attributable to modifiable risk factors like inactivity, social isolation, and hypertension. The brain that reaches 90 intact is one that was exercised and protected. The longest-lived people in the blue zones don't have proprietary supplements. They have consistent, purposeful, connected daily living. No paywalls, just daily choices. Every day you are either investing in your future self or withdrawing from them. Start where you are, with what you have today. I am Sharon, your host on Stable Health. New episodes every week.
