SPEAKER_03Welcome back to SDK Wednesdays with your girl Ash. We have a guest today, so let's get into story time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's Ash on the track. SDK sisters. Yeah, we back. Now, real talk, real laugh. Let me show you how. SDK sisters, story time with Ash. Little life lessons in the flash. From the cold to the chaos, we clash. SDK sisters, story time, we're Ash, Ash.
SPEAKER_03All right, today we have Dominique with us. Welcome to the show. Thank you. Hi, everybody. And you can go ahead and tell your story.
SPEAKER_02All right. So my story is on how I survived domestic violence. Um, I was married for five years through my ex-husband, and I was five years I was going through domestic violence. It was very hard, and I was contemplating my exit because it's hard to exit to. I think the hardest part about domestic violence is opening up and experiencing what you're going through at the same time. So when I was going through it, it was really hard because I didn't think this was the person I actually married. So the first year it just started off with like a lot of verbal. He would hit me like every now and then, and it would kind of scare me. But then the next few years after that, just really, really got worse. I kept opening up, I would call police in Florida, I would call police in Midland, and nobody would do nothing. It's like nobody really took my story seriously. Uh, they really took it serious the last year when I was getting ready to leave. The worst part about all this is my son had an experience this, and that's what I regret is my son hadn't to see all that. So whenever I finally decided to leave, it was December of 2024. And I remember I was going to the airport, I kind of lied to him and said I was coming back, but that was a part of my exit plan. So whenever I got on the plane, I knew I wasn't coming back. When I got back to Midland, that's when we decided to go ahead and do a divorce. The divorce didn't take that long, but I'm just glad that everything worked in my favor. Um, I have full custody of my son. We do share custody during the summer. Um, and I'm just glad to be away because most people don't make it out alive. So for me to make it out alive is really a blessing and to still be here in this life.
SPEAKER_03And I wanted to ask you, you say you were married for five years. Yes. Um, did he show any signs before you got married? Of domestic violence.
SPEAKER_02There was a lot of signs before we did get married, yes. Um, there was an incident when I was actually pregnant. He sprayed my hand in the door, but I looked past it because I was so in love with him, but my mom and him were already trying to warn me.
unknownOh wow.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's and that is true. A lot of people do not make it out. So I'm I'm glad you made it out. And did you um how old is your son now?
SPEAKER_02My son is seven, he'll be 8th of December.
SPEAKER_03Does he ask you questions about it?
SPEAKER_02No, because he really already knows basically what went on. So all he asks is like, you know, like, uh, when is he gonna get to see his dad? What she's with his dad right now, and then he'll just ask little questions like, Oh, would you ever get back with dad? And I'm just kinda no.
SPEAKER_03Interesting. And what advice would you give women that are in the same situation right now?
SPEAKER_02Get out while you can because they're not gonna change. I I thought my own stuff that he was gonna change, and it just he didn't change at all. So you can get out, get out. I know love is is you know, you're in love with the person, but love never hurts. So you shouldn't allow a game to ever think she verbally abuse you or do anything that's in the lines of domestic violence. So my best advice is get out, start all over, start fresh, heal yourself, and be who and be true.
unknownThank you.
SPEAKER_03And what has healing looked like for you after healing?
SPEAKER_02It took a little bit for me. Um, I would say the first year, last year, I took it hard. I would cry every day because I wasn't sure if I made the right decision. But then after that, I felt like maybe a couple months down the line I started doing better. I was focusing more on my son, working out, growing more in church. Um, and this year I'm doing a lot better. I don't catch myself crying at all. Like I saw a lot happening.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm glad you I'm glad you got away. Um, one of our guests, she she got stabbed 25 times and lived. And so I know that could have turned out a whole lot different. So I'm glad that even as myself, as a domestic violence survivor, I'm glad we, you know, overcame and got away from these crazy men.
SPEAKER_02Um I would say also to women who are also going through it, just don't be blindsided. Like don't look past the red flags. If you see those mini red flags of him being violent, anything get away. Don't look past it, but again, it's it's not gonna change. And don't change yourself for a man that's not gonna change itself for you.
SPEAKER_03That is great advice. And if people want to reach out to you, how can they reach out?
SPEAKER_02You can always look me up on social media. My Instagram name is Dominique Chris Twenty, my Facebook is my actual name, Dominique Chris, and then if you follow me on TikTok, it's D Doc Chris.
