SPEAKER_03

All right. Welcome to the show, Kayla. Hi. Yeah, you can go ahead and tell your story.

SPEAKER_02

All right. Well, my name is Kayla. Um, in 2025, January 19th, I was shot six times in my back by my ex-husband, whose name is Jeremy McBride. On the day of January 19th, we were supposed to meet up, go shopping. Um, we were supposed to meet back at my house for him to gather a few things that were in my possession on that day. I'm so sorry, I messed this whole thing up. I really don't know how to tell the story.

SPEAKER_03

Just take your time. Um, just listening.

SPEAKER_02

It's like I don't know where to start. Um, so I was five months pregnant at this time. I did meet up with Jeremy before I broke the news to friends, family, and the rest of the world that I was pregnant. Um, we met up and I told him face to face. I didn't want him to hear through anybody else. Um, and then in January, when we met up, um I was at a friend's house. We posted my half-baked photo shoot on Facebook. Um, she made me breakfast, and then I met up with Jeremy at Goodwill, and we did a little bit of shopping. We came back to my house. He grabbed the things he needed, and then he just lingered around. Um, when he was lingering around, I then called my friend who I was previously at her house. Um, I called her on FaceTime and I was like, listen, he's been here over an hour. He got what he came for. Why is he still here? Um, she gave me my out. She asked me if I wanted to go shopping with her. Immediately I was like, Yes, I'm down. She said she'll be coming, pulling up soon. Um, and for me to get ready, I hung up in the living room, told Jeremy I was leaving, walked through the closet. I changed. After changing, he followed me to the bedroom. He sat on my bed and I was standing in the bathroom brushing my hair. We were having a little conversation. I absolutely have no clue what about. Um, and while I was brushing my hair, I remember the last words coming out of my mouth of, oh my god, my hair is getting so long. And that's what sounded like firecrackers were going off in a pan behind me. I was jumping with my knees super high, hands swinging everywhere, screaming, um, who the fuck shot me? Who the fuck shot me? And then all of a sudden I lost feeling of my legs and I hit the floor. My body curved around the bathtub. If you've seen my house, it's super tiny. Um, and my body just naturally curved. I didn't hit my head on the bathtub or anything. Um, but anywho, I looked up at Jeremy. He was standing over me, and I just repeatedly asked him, who the fuck shot me? Who the fuck shot me? Um, he turned around, he walked away, he called for my dog, and he walked out the house. He was gone for a few minutes. I remember being by myself thinking, How am I gonna reach my phone? How is anybody gonna hear me? I started banging on the walls, yelling for help. And shortly enough, Jeremy came back in. When Jeremy came in, my best friend also walked in at the same time. She walked in through the back door. She was carrying in a basket of laundry. She was gonna use me for my utilities. Um, but she walked in with her laundry basket and I said, Help, I've been shot. She laughed it off at first, saying, Ah, funny, get up. And I was like, No, seriously. And I pulled my hand from under my sweatshirt and I showed her the blood. She rushed over. She was holding her hand to my back. Um, both of them were just staring, and I yelled, Well, someone called 911. Jeremy picked his hand up from his side, and he what I thought called 911. Later found out that that call was never made, and Emily's was the very first call of the night. But anywho, Jeremy pretended to call 911. He walked around the corner of the bathroom, through the kitchen, exiting out the front door, and I heard him repeating, my wife has been shot, and the address is so and so, but he was saying it wrong. I was correcting him the whole time, like screaming out my address correctly. And he was getting quieter. Eventually, I didn't hear him anymore. Um, Emily got up, she was on the phone with 911. She went and grabbed water out of the refrigerator. And as previously mentioned, I'm a baker, so she went to go grab my gloves to like protect herself. She was a medical assistant. Um, when she came back to the bathroom, she informed me that she locked all the doors and windows. Um, I'm still questioning her who shot me. She was asking all sorts of questions: what I had ate, what I had drank, who was all here, what had happened. And I'm just trying to shut her up. Just shh be quiet, stop, stop. Eventually, the paramedics got there. They were asking me all sorts of questions about Jeremy, um, his birthday, where he had gone, what car he drove, what car I drove. And then I was lifted up on a tarp, carried outside of my house and to an ambulance. And from the ambulance, we went to Eskenazi Hospital. Um, when I was at Eskenazi, I remember how cold it was getting off of the ambulance. Um, it was like a shock. That's all I could feel was being cold. And as soon as we went inside, it was just a room full of bright white lights. Um it was super loud. Everybody was yelling orders, asking me questions, if there was anybody I wanted to call. And then all of a sudden, it got quiet. Not a single noise from anybody. And all you hear from this ultrasound technician was a no. No explanation, no description, just plain no. And all of a sudden, the noise came back. Everybody started shouting orders, asking questions, questioning me, and cutting my clothes off. I remember shouting that I wanted to keep my shoes because they were my gym shoes, and I loved going to the gym and I was attached. I still have them. When the detectives were asking me for emergency contacts, I remember not knowing anybody's number. I was screaming and hollering, call my phone, call my phone. My friend will have my phone. It was left at my house. She was left at the house, call my phone. Um, Emily got a hold of all my friends and family who live in Texas, and she informed them that I had been shot. My mom and my sister immediately got in the car and drove the whole 14 hours to be with me. Um, a lot of friends showed up at the hospital. I don't remember any of that, it's just what I was told. And then I remember waking up, holding my nurse's hand. I looked to the left, and my other very close friend was standing there, and they both broke it to me that Jeremy was the one to shoot me. And I lost it. I broke down, I couldn't control myself, I didn't believe what was happening. How did the man that I was married to shoot me in my own house while I was pregnant? I do not remember anything after that. I fell back asleep, I wake up, and then they were the next day after that, it was the 20th of January. They were rolling me down to, I believe it was the basement. It was cold, dark, silent, nobody in sight, just me and the nurses. And they informed me that I was going to deliver my baby. They were gonna be able to take pictures of her, get keepsakes. I asked if I could hold her, and they did not answer that question. They did ask if I wanted to be on birth control, um, ended up saying yes, but um went in to deliver. After delivery, I asked if I could hold my daughter. And one nurse in particular who was standing on the right side of my head, I will never forget her, um blatantly blurted out she did not come out in one piece. So that is an image I will never forget. It took me forever to go through her keepsakes and look through her photos. I was with my therapist the first time I was ever able to go through the pictures. Um, and I still don't look at them much. But um yeah, shortly after I was it was about 14 days. I had my stitches removed. I couldn't quite walk yet, but I could stand. And they transported me to a hospital rehabilitation so I could learn how to walk. I was thankfully only there for six days, and I busted my butt so hard to walk again. My second day being there, I took my first steps without holding on. And my fourth day being there, I walked 50 steps without anybody holding me, without holding on to anything. And I was determined. I got out of there and I did outpatient physical therapy for a while, eventually learned how to lift, walk, run, um, get my balance, throw balls, um, all sorts of things. And um, then I got a job and life just went back to normal. And now I'm just normal old Kayla again.

SPEAKER_03

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I was just listening and um, I don't even know what the word is, but that is so scary and traumatic. Um, what happened to him? I I know I'm assuming he went to prison.

SPEAKER_02

Um, court, yeah, he is, but court got pushed off for so long. We got many dates um that were rescheduled. And then February 18th, so shy of about a year and a month, two months maybe, um, he was finally convicted. He got 30 years for attempt of murder, serving consecutively with um nine years for foodicide, which is attempt of murder of a known pregnancy.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, yeah, I'm glad he is off the streets. Was he abusive before this?

SPEAKER_02

Um, that's the thing that I go back and forth with now is that I don't I don't think so. We never really had screaming, yelling arguments. It was never hands-on physical. Um, but as I talk about it with other people and my own therapist, um, they say the word grooming. Jeremy was, however, 12 years older than me. Um, when I met him, he was an apostolic Pentecostal minister, and I fell in love with what he had to say. I got into church, I learned what I was supposed to do. Um, if anybody knows like the apostolic community, it's like hard, I would say. I don't know, like they have strict rules, and so it's it's a lot to keep up with, but I changed everything, I changed myself, I became what he wanted, uh, but at the end it just it wasn't me.

SPEAKER_03

And what has healing looked like for you?

SPEAKER_02

That is a hard question. I wouldn't say heal as much as move on. If I think hard about the subject, it's really hard for me. I don't know, to cope with it. I make a lot of dark humor jokes. Um, so I won't cry. When I explain the story to people, they they want to cry and they want to hug me. And I'm like, no, seriously, it's okay. I'm still here, I'm alive and well.

SPEAKER_03

But at the end of the day, it does hurt because I'm supposed to have a newborn daughter with me, and I don't you are truly a survivor, and I am so sorry you lost your daughter as well.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, her name would have been Ayana Dawn.

SPEAKER_03

And um, is there any like last advice that you would like to give anyone that may be in a situation, even like a grooming situation, that they don't notice?

SPEAKER_02

I would say never change for anybody. You're never gonna make anybody happy if you're not happy. You have to love yourself first, as well as the healing process of this all take your time one day at a time. I was absolutely robbed of my healing process because I felt like I had something to prove, and um I know I was supposed to see you when I came to visit.

SPEAKER_03

I want to put that out there. Um, next time I come to Indiana, I am definitely going to see you. Um how can people get in contact with you?

SPEAKER_02

Um, I'm on TikTok. You can follow me at Kayla, K-A-Y-L-A.R. As well as I am on Facebook. My entire story is on Facebook. Just Kayla Netherland.
