Just Us Talking
Throwback to 2016
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Hit play and step back into the strange magic of 2016! We’re talking the songs that owned our bus rides and bedrooms. The chaotic earworms we couldn’t escape, and the unexpected tracks that still unlock oddly specific memories. From Drake and Panic! to The 1975 and Post Malone, we trace how a playlist turned into a time capsule.
The culture didn’t stop at headphones. We laugh through musically beginnings, Snapchat dog filters and flower crowns, and those aggressively washed-out Instagram edits with borders that made every photo look like a scrapbook souvenir.
We get uncomfortably honest about our 2016 wardrobes—leggings, infinity scarves, riding boots, chokers from Claire’s, hunter-green utility jackets—and the selfies we wish would stay in the archive. We cap it off with main-character anthems, personal stories, and the big question: was 2016 truly great, or are we just addicted to the glow of a shared moment?
Queue it up, relive the joy and the cringe, and tell us your most 2016 memory or song. If this made you smile, subscribe, share with a friend who lived the summer of Pokémon Go, and leave a quick review to keep the nostalgia rolling.

Meet The Hosts & Set The Year
SPEAKER_02Hey guys, welcome back to Just Us Talking. Today we are going back in time to the iconic iconic year of 2016. I'm talking Drake, Vine, Harambe, Fetty Wap.
SPEAKER_04I want you to be mine again, baby. This lifetime is driving you crazy.
SPEAKER_07This is just us talking.
SPEAKER_02Hey guys, I'm Gracie, and my fun fact was one time in college, a guy told me he was a prophet when I wouldn't date him.
SPEAKER_01My name is Kennedy, and fun fact, flamingos aren't born pink.
SPEAKER_03My name is Tyree, and I believe pigeons are government plants. My name is Mary Grace, and when I was little, Lion King 2 was my favorite movie.
SPEAKER_06Hi, this is David, and when I was born, I was low on vitamin C, and I think that's why I I like so much Wait, wait, wait, sorry.
SPEAKER_04Hi, I'm Morgan, and I think I should peed my pants a little couch is wet.
SPEAKER_02The leather couch is wet.
Why 2016 Felt So Free
SPEAKER_04I didn't know that. So you guys, why was 2016 so great? What do you guys remember about it? That was so amazing. No responsibilities. Free. How old was I?
SPEAKER_06That was back before I had a phone. So Okay, hold on.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we do need to go over that around age range or how old we were in 2016. Not the specific age.
SPEAKER_01Um I was 10. I was 10. Okay. Okay, I was 14.
SPEAKER_02I was 14-15, depending on the month.
SPEAKER_04The month. The month. Tyree was there. I was alive during it. Onk, onk, onk, onk.
unknownI remember it.
SPEAKER_06The only one that wouldn't have who would have been just a baby would have been Gray, right?
SPEAKER_04No, I mean six. Gray's been 14 for 32 years.
SPEAKER_06Oh, you're right.
Albums That Soundtracked Our Lives
SPEAKER_04Let's look around the room. Like, what albums did you guys listen to? In 2016. I have Lil Boat. Listen. Lil Boat, The Life of Pablo, Kanye West. Obviously.
SPEAKER_01That would actually be so funny if we did. And then I shrim like too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Shut up right now. That was the number one thing I was. You were listening to what? I was listening to Hillsong Young and Free and Ray Shriver. Ray Shriver.
SPEAKER_06I did not understand that.
SPEAKER_04I said I was listening to Hillsong Young and Free and Ray Shrimmer. And Ray Shrimmer. Back to back. Back to back. What about you, Mary Grace?
SPEAKER_03I this was kind of hard because I feel like I was listening to pretty much anything that was on the radio for like Christian, country, pop. But there was one song, like specifically, very weirdly, that I remember in my high school like parking lot driving away to often. I don't know why this song, but it's Mar Marmalade by McAmore.
SPEAKER_01Wait, what did you do?
SPEAKER_03In the minivan. In my minivan driving minivan. In my minivan driving away. To Marmalade by McInmore. In the minivan. So, I mean, I listened to a lot, but for some reason that stuff that song like stood out the most. I don't know. Good.
SPEAKER_06Uh, the album I listened to, and probably artists, this was the start of my Bruno Mars phrase. 24 Carat Magic.
SPEAKER_01That's a good one. Good Bruno Mars.
SPEAKER_0624 Carat Magic was a whole lot of that as well.
SPEAKER_04That's good. I wrote down a bunch, but I one of them, okay, this was at probably realistically my number one, but it was 2015 when I looked it up with blurry face, blows.
SPEAKER_06Oh my gosh. I wrote that down.
SPEAKER_04That's what you had me. Do you want me to just fire them all off? Sure. I have a bunch. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Wait, wait, wait, before you do that, stressed out.
SPEAKER_01I was like, 10-year-old me, why did I feel like I related to that song? Right? No, literally. I'm like, I did not understand.
SPEAKER_0414. How stressed I would be one day. Oh my gosh, pre-cal. Oh my gosh, free algebra. Oh my gosh. Um, so yeah, blurry face was one. My my actual number one though, it was probably Death of a Bachelor, Panic at the Disco. Oh my gosh, Panic at the Disco. I was absolutely a Panic at the Disco. Huge Panic at the Disco fan. Dude. I yeah.
SPEAKER_06That and Fallout Boy, I was crazy about her at that time.
SPEAKER_04Uh, views by Drake. The 1975, their second album came out that year. That was the first time I had listened to their music. And I love that band, so that was iconic for me. Stony, Post Malone. Oh, good. Purpose, Justin Bieber, His Return. Dangerous Woman Ariana Grande came out that year. Okay. Dangerous. That was on my own. That was a great album. But those are the ones I had.
SPEAKER_02I have like four four songs that I liked. One song that I hated. So songs that I liked that I spammed was Sean Mendez Treat You Better. Me and Sean were on lot. I loved him. Okay, this is like low-key, corny. But Can't Stop the Feeling, Justin Bieber. That was a great song. It was good. Yeah. I remember we did like a dance in eighth grade to it. Justin Troy. Like a music video. Who did I say?
SPEAKER_01Justin Beaver. Oh, I meant to bring it up. That was gonna be one of the things.
SPEAKER_02The song from the Trolls.
SPEAKER_05That was a good song. The song from Trolls.
SPEAKER_02Wrong Justin. The next one was Justin Beaver, love yourself. That was the Beaver. Sorry. Sorry, was that same year, right? Yeah. My last one that I loved, this is also outing me. Do y'all remember Sit Still Look Pretty by Deia? No. That movie kinda ate, I'm not gonna lie. My middle, my eighth grade self absolutely tore that up in this song that I hated. Tore it up. Seven years by Lucas. I hated that one.
SPEAKER_04Hate that one. Every time it came one. But no, if I say that. Immediately down.
SPEAKER_03Just so you know, that's the sound that makes it. Can you hear that sound?
SPEAKER_04That's what we mean.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, that's me.
SPEAKER_01I'm not familiar with the song. Everyone took mine. Flurry Face was gonna be my album that I've been. That's a good album. I just think it's a good album, and I just think it's funny that 10-year-old me thought I related to that so much, right? But I will also say Cheap Thrills came out in twice a year. Yeah, and I mean, who can really top that down?
Singles We Loved And Hated
SPEAKER_04I feel like some songs that I listened to. What was that one song? I and I still don't know what's it called. That's like you guys know the one that's talking about. Yes!
SPEAKER_03Yes! But I cannot question it.
SPEAKER_05You know, okay, I'm honestly I feel really bad because I feel like there's gonna be a lot of people who listen to this are not gonna understand what just we all did, though. I think we all caught it.
SPEAKER_04Hive mind, hive mind. But I usually don't know. Listeners, you guys don't know what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it's yes.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god. Wait, what your Diguchi flip-flops come out. Bad baby. Literally that song, and this is what I'm passionate about. Tyree is nearly to tears right now. That song, Gucci Flip-Ops, and what was the other song? Those were all my current raps this year.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, Tyree, weirdly enough, Tyree had like a lot of 2016 songs.
SPEAKER_04Gucci flip off.
SPEAKER_05She's also the one. This it was her idea to do the 2010s.
SPEAKER_04So don't get geeked. Love Bad Baby.
SPEAKER_06I really hope Bad Baby hears this.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Gucci Flip Office is 2018. I still have a good year. Gucci flip-off.
SPEAKER_06Better year, some might say.
SPEAKER_01Gucci flip. Okay, well, let's talk about if 2016 is actually worth the hype. Like for you personally. Do you agree with that or is it overhyped?
unknownHmm.
SPEAKER_04The only thing that makes it like appropriately hyped is I would just like the one song that makes it broccoli. Broccoli? Broccoli. I don't think I know what they're talking about.
SPEAKER_06What is broccoli?
SPEAKER_04Possibly. In the middle of the off and work now. Wait, actually.
SPEAKER_01Play it and we'll cut it out. I don't know. I'm so confused. Listeners, we're back. We're back. We have to listen to the song.
SPEAKER_05I accidentally said somebody's name. Okay, well, it's all cut. It's all cut. We're good.
SPEAKER_04I listen to that song all the time still, and I just feel like you know that one reel that's like yes.
SPEAKER_05Okay, so Tyree is dancing and feeling.
SPEAKER_04It is the Scarlet Johansson white girl dance from that one SNL skit. No, it's the identical dance to what Tyree just did. Yeah, Tyree.
SPEAKER_05Tyree kind of hit that happy.
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh, Rack City. Sorry, Rack City! What were some social media trends? Because I think was Vine still around 2016? That the death of Vine happened in 2016.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so as Gracie had mentioned in the beginning, Harambe.
SPEAKER_07That's Harambe.
SPEAKER_06It was the year that Harambe died. The water bottle flip, that's when it started. And the mannequin challenge.
SPEAKER_04The mannequin challenge. The mannequin challenge.
SPEAKER_02The bottle flip. I have a kid literally, they get like free breakfast every day. He comes to my classroom, flips this milk on the desk every day, and he gets it. He's like, it's gonna be a good day. He doesn't get it, he's like, tastes to me the worst. Like, hey, it's just a milk flip. You're good, bro. A milk flip. So 2016 bottle flip trend is still affecting us today.
SPEAKER_06It was also musically is when it came out. It musically came out this. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Pokemon Go. Pokemon Go, I was about to say. Pokemon Go. So good. This was a Taylor Swift and Kanye drama. Oh, wasn't it? It was.
SPEAKER_06I stand that Kanye saved her. Kanye protected her.
SPEAKER_04This is not the conspiracy yet. Oh, you're right. Kanye. I do, I have seen that, and I think it has some merit. But also, 2016, iconic year for Taylor Swift and Kanye West. Also I didn't remember that that was that year. That's also the year that Kanye died.
SPEAKER_05He died because he protected Taylor. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Taylor having that awful bleach blonde bob. Was this the same bob? No, I love a bob. It was the bleach blonde problem. Was this the same year in I don't know? And I don't know if you guys, because you guys are my Swifties in the room, Gracie and Morgan. Was this the same year and I don't know if you'll remember this at all? Because it's absolutely wiped from the internet. Can't find it. Where Taylor Swift and T-Pain made that song.
SPEAKER_06What?
SPEAKER_04Do you guys remember that?
SPEAKER_06There's a song with Taylor Swift and T Pain.
SPEAKER_04And T-Pain, and it was so good. I do. They wiped it from the internet. It doesn't exist. Why?
SPEAKER_06Alright, I feel like we're going back to the um vivid.
SPEAKER_04Relax. Was the year of the This Is What You Came For with Calendar? That song was that year too. So I'm trying to figure out. I remember. Oh my gosh. Huh. So good. I don't remember. What were any other transition guys?
SPEAKER_06Hold up. Also, Frank Ocean's blonde album came out in 2016.
SPEAKER_04I agree. I agree. I agree. And I hate to admit it, I did not get into Frank Ocean until recently. A couple years after it came out.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I agree with that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But it was such it's such a good album.
SPEAKER_06Well, I agree. Like it's just a good idea. I agree.
SPEAKER_04I agree.
SPEAKER_02I agree. Another trend that happened, Trigger Warning Morgan, the clowns.
Is 2016 Worth The Hype
SPEAKER_06Oh, I was genuinely afraid to go outside at night for a long time.
SPEAKER_04For our listeners, my my top, my number one fear is clowns. I don't, I keep reading. I didn't even know that. No, if you've tried to test me with a clown, I will fight you. I'm not sure if you're not. I literally, like, I remember going to Don't. Kennedy is like scheming on the other side of the room right now. I don't even know. Okay. We're gonna have to bleep it out. But we went to like my friend's birthdays.
SPEAKER_00Oh no.
SPEAKER_04And the rule there is that, like, or at the time at least, was that they could touch you, but you can't like touch them back. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they changed that. It definitely changed that. Yeah, to have changed. But they had the creepiest freaking clown. I literally, I was like, this is the worst day. How old are you though? Uh like 14, 13, 14.
SPEAKER_07Great!
SPEAKER_0418. 2016.
SPEAKER_05She said this is the worst ever.
SPEAKER_04No, this is the worst ever. Ever and never again. Don't ask me to go on highless scream. I won't. I won't find a house. I don't care. They have clowns everywhere. Yeah. I won't be there. I don't like clowns everywhere. We gotta get her.
SPEAKER_06Guys, you gotta kidnap her. What?
SPEAKER_04No. No, I won't let you. I I know you said this already, but I was a very avid Pokemon Go. People were just outside in 2016. It was so much fun. I stopped playing because I got too many Pidgeys and I was pissed. What? It's like, okay, another one. Thanks. That was a great start.
SPEAKER_05Another one, thank you. Another one.
SPEAKER_04Pidgey. Give me a Wilmer. Give me some Dragonite, please.
SPEAKER_00Dude.
SPEAKER_04Eve Dragonite, please. Some Lameon.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I love Pokemon Go. This is also when the phrase um catch measa. How about that? Yes.
SPEAKER_06Which we still use today. That's wild. Gracie, is that what you just scheme you were scheming about on your phone? No, no, no. Maybe. Maybe.
SPEAKER_04Can I drop what we were just scheming about? The birth of that. The greatest movie of all time came out in 2016.
SPEAKER_01That's literally my Walla Land. Stop Morgan.
SPEAKER_04Walla Land came out in 2016.
SPEAKER_01No, that didn't come out in 2016. But I didn't see it then, so I need to in my mind it doesn't count. I didn't see it until like 2016.
SPEAKER_06Every other category? Lalla Land. Lala Land. That's why 2016. What?
SPEAKER_04Not at the Oscars. It was Moonstar.
SPEAKER_06It got beat up by Moonlight, but from what I've heard, I've never even seen Moonlight. I've never seen it, but I've heard it is a fantastic movie.
SPEAKER_04What movie did come out in 2016 was that I loved was Civil War.
SPEAKER_01I literally don't even know why I wrote down any of the things. Alright, stop talking, Kennedy. Kennedy, maybe start talking. Yeah, apparently. No, there's nothing else I wrote down. Lala Land and Civil War. This is the prime pride you have.
SPEAKER_05Head first, jump in.
Viral Trends, Vine, And Harambe
SPEAKER_01Uh also Rogue One came out then. Very good movie. That was the best of the newer Star Wars. I think. I think so. I like a lot of that.
SPEAKER_06Hey, say what you will. I liked Solo.
SPEAKER_01I really enjoyed Solo.
SPEAKER_06Um also Hacksaw Ridge came out.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. No way. That was 2016.
SPEAKER_06For more of my nerds out there, uh Shin Godzilla. I don't know if anybody else will know that.
SPEAKER_04And then also and a silence fell over the room.
SPEAKER_05Me before you came out.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was gonna say listen, listen, the Bumblebee. And Central Intelligence! The Bible tights for me before you. So cool.
SPEAKER_06Also, the greatest sci-fi movie ever, Passengers, that was with Chris.
SPEAKER_04Oh, no, but the actual greatest sci-fi movie ever, Arrival, came out that year too. That movie was peak. And if you haven't seen it, you should watch it. I agree with you.
SPEAKER_06I do agree with you on the arrival. I was being sarcastic for Passengers. Passengers are terrible.
SPEAKER_02You know what else came out? Zootopia. That was my favorite movie. Like people asking me, what was your favorite movie? That's Mary Grace's favorite movie, too. Like, is it really Mick Wild? That reminds me of a Nick Wild.
SPEAKER_05Can I go on a side tangent about Zootopia?
SPEAKER_06So I was recently going out with this girl who goes to a school nearby. I'm not gonna say what or where. But she like her floor, the floor for her dorm was completely zootopia out. None of the rest of the floors had it. What do you mean?
SPEAKER_04Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait out. Wait out. Wait, what was Zootopia to mean? Zootopia meaning.
SPEAKER_06Like you know, like you know, like the little tubes that the um the hamsters go through. They had like a bunch of prunes around events.
SPEAKER_02Have you seen Zootopia? There is none of that in Zootopia.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, in the first one. That's a thing about Zoom. No, it is.
SPEAKER_02It is not a good thing.
SPEAKER_06But no, no, they had like cutouts of all the characters. No, stop, stop, stop, stop. Photos. Like black and white printed photos of all the characters taped on the walls. And I'm like, none of the other floors have this.
SPEAKER_07Like, it's just floor.
SPEAKER_06And I asked her, I was like, what is up with this? And she's like, oh, it's because uh like our RA is the one who makes the decision. And I was like, is your RA 12?
SPEAKER_01So wait, they didn't maybe wait, wait, wait. The girl you were dating didn't make that choice, or she did?
SPEAKER_06No, no, she wasn't in charge of it. She just looked at it.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_06No, it was just the first time I ever went over there. The first time I ever went over there.
SPEAKER_01I thought he meant that her dorm room. I thought I mentioned. I was like, you dodged a straight bullet. At least she had decorations.
SPEAKER_04Freshman year. This is not me.
SPEAKER_02Freshman year of college. Morgan pulled out the college with nothing. Except for two office sequencing, like the flip pillows where you wipe it and it flips two sides. Michael Scott and Dwight shirt on her bed and like one of those like collage picture frames for her wall. That was it. That was no case.
SPEAKER_04Mind you, we're coming out of the sneaking quarantine.
SPEAKER_02Amazon was still a thing.
SPEAKER_07Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02I had more. I think they actually gave you stuff to put on your walls. Yeah, hey, you need some stuff.
SPEAKER_05She's like, girl, it's depressing.
SPEAKER_02I said, I don't know you very well, but we need something.
SPEAKER_04But would it have been a minimalist?
SPEAKER_01No. Would it have been better if she had Utopia stuff on there? I don't think so.
SPEAKER_06No, so sorry, to say it wasn't her dorm room. It was the dorm floor.
SPEAKER_01I don't know why I thought that that was the case.
SPEAKER_06I just thought, like, the first time I went over there, like to watch a movie with her after we had like dinner, like I'm walking around, like we we get up the stairs, I open them like, whoa. Every hallway is got everything. And then like one of the hallways even had these weird mirrors that were all like, I don't know, they they were like wiggly noodle is the best way I could describe the shape of this.
SPEAKER_04What is our next Hear me out? TV shows, 20 minutes. TV shows.
SPEAKER_06Dude, all I watched was the office. Yeah, but lost. Lost.
SPEAKER_04I personally was obsessed with the like the CWDC shows that I was. Oh, The Flash. Yes. That was literally every last one I was watching every week that it came out. Like dedicated. Dedicated 87 Central.
SPEAKER_06And then it fell off.
SPEAKER_04And then I also was like deeply, deeply obsessed with Once Upon a Time. Oh. And I think it still my heart. It hit its peak in 2016. It did. Maybe 2017. But I literally so good. I love I love that show. It was so good. Team of the Jones. If I were to revisit it now, I'd be like, what was I doing? Like what was happening on TV? But for the moment that it was in time. For the moment. And I think that encapsulates the year 2016. Obviously.
SPEAKER_06No, yeah. Yeah, I agree with that.
Movies We Rewatched To Death
SPEAKER_04Did you guys have Snapchat in 2016? Oh yeah. The dog filter? The dog filter. The dog was the flower crown.
SPEAKER_05Gracie just judges you hard.
SPEAKER_04My favorite thing. I'm not gonna lie, I did a deep dive into my Snapchat to prepare for this, and none of those can see the light of data. I actually post deleted all existence of everything.
SPEAKER_06Are we gonna do for the Instagram photos of us in Tweed?
SPEAKER_04No, we can't because there's nothing. I promise you. I have cleared my photos. I have cleared the phone. Listen, I like it until I didn't hit my glow up until after, way after.
SPEAKER_05Girl, I was 12. What do you think? I grew up now. We're so lazy.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_06Alright. Turned.
SPEAKER_03I was talking about myself.
SPEAKER_06No, you weren't. No, you weren't.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I was. I I think 2016 was actually the year that I got Snapchat and Instagram. Going back to the phone thing, I didn't I didn't get a phone until I was like 15. So this was kind of like a new thing for me in 2016. Snapchat and Instagram. In 2016.
SPEAKER_04Me too. My first phone.
SPEAKER_03So Retweet. Great tweet. That was a thing. That was a good thing. In 20, was this 2016? Like when everyone was going like this? Was that fierce? Fierce.
SPEAKER_06For the listeners at home, it's the fierce thing where you put like the two fingers over your eyes. Was that 2016? Like the peace sign over your eyes.
SPEAKER_04I'm pretty sure it was. I think so. It feels like it is, but it feels like it does feel very 2016. Yeah. I think that's what was happening.
SPEAKER_00It may feel like it, but is it?
SPEAKER_04But is it? So sorry, I didn't mean to go backwards, but I forgot another movie that came out 2010. Did y'all ever watch the Magnific Magnificent Seven?
SPEAKER_07Oh my gosh. That was a great movie.
SPEAKER_04Great movie. I love it. 10 out of 10 recommended. Maybe not 10 out of 10, but. Okay. Not everything gets a 10. Not everything gets a 10. If we're being honest. I agree. Is your letterbox full of tins? Five stars? I know. Yes. Hers is. I am a biased watcher. And my reviews are fucked up.
SPEAKER_06Let's go go follow Morgan. On Letterboxd.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Great reviews.
SPEAKER_03Please.
SPEAKER_04Next segment, I have a little game. Little game. I'm so excited. Was it 2016 or was it not? If you guys know, name the year. Some of these we already went over. Clown sightings. Yes. 2016. The very start of Musically.
SPEAKER_06It was 2016, right? Because we did talk about that.
SPEAKER_04I think it was 2015.
SPEAKER_06Oh really?
SPEAKER_04Has anybody used Musically? Sorry. And I like that she asked that question looking directly at me. Yes. I was pre-laughing because I was laughing at myself. We use some of me and my friends at the time. We used this, I guess it was the app that was popular then. It was called Triller. And you made music videos. Oh, please tell me you have them. Shut up!
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, we have to see them.
SPEAKER_04I did find those.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they may have to We'll have to see it later.
SPEAKER_04Maybe.
SPEAKER_01Instead of your picture review in 2016, we'll just upload from 2016.
SPEAKER_02No. The Visco Girl Hydroflast Scrunchy. I was such a Visco girl.
SPEAKER_03Like, like I probably still am. Like hold on Hydro.
SPEAKER_02I still am.
SPEAKER_07I never did that. I never made that noise.
SPEAKER_04That was 2019. Which was also another great year.
SPEAKER_06Visco Girls was 2019.
SPEAKER_04No! Yeah. That was another great year. You were indie. You were early. You were early. Trend setter. This is a trend that unfortunately did have me in a chokehold The Renegade dance.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god.
SPEAKER_042020.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I was gonna say that was not 2016.
SPEAKER_04There is a minute of the year.
SPEAKER_06And Gracie is doing the renegade currently. Very poorly, I might add.
SPEAKER_04I need to stop. I used to film. Me and my family would do a lot of TikTok videos.
SPEAKER_06My little sister was obsessed with those dances.
SPEAKER_04Me too. Symphony. Catch me outside 2016. My queen. Bad baby. Harambe 2016, too.
TV Fixations And Snapchat Era
SPEAKER_06Harambe. Wait, I have a Harambe story really quickly. Is this you were there? No, no.
SPEAKER_04He was the boy of the City. No, no, no. It was David. No. On site, get him.
SPEAKER_06The anniversary was like the same week.
SPEAKER_04Anniversary. Sorry.
SPEAKER_06Her Harambe's death was like the same week as my birthday. And I was sitting there eating with my parents. I was talking with my little sister's boyfriend. He's the funniest guy. And we're joking around, and I said, Do you know what happened in 2016? Like 10 years ago? Like almost like this week? Harambe died. And my parents are like, Who's Harambe? And I was like, oh my gosh, I have to tell. Like, I was like, they're going to, I'm about to share Harambe's story. And I told them, and they were so heartbroken. Like my mother was like so visibly upset.
SPEAKER_05She was like, oh my gosh, why would they do that to that poor gorilla? I was like, mom, I don't know. I was like, no. How did they not know then?
SPEAKER_04Did you get taken to the Cincinnati zoo for your birthday in 2016 for chance?
SPEAKER_06No. Sure. I've never been there.
SPEAKER_04Sure, sure. You just have the air of somebody who's been to Ohio. You don't have to get there. You look like you've been to Ohio. You just seem like you've been there. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_05Not even a compliment.
SPEAKER_04Sorry. I just had to share. I feel that was a good 2016 story. 2016 story. Our last portion is to share a story about yourself that is from 2016 or buried 2016 coded.
SPEAKER_01It looks like she wants to start. I lost something once.
SPEAKER_04I lost something once. I had two. One.
SPEAKER_06Oh, she's giggling already.
SPEAKER_04It was just so stupid. So my locker number in 2016 was 738. And I did take a permanent marker and write a one in front of it. And it is still like that to this day. It still says 1738. Ten years later.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what the actual words are, but we're self-censoring.
SPEAKER_06We're self-censoring. Yeah, we're censoring. We know the words.
SPEAKER_04We know the words. Trust. We don't need the lyrics. We don't need the lyrics. But that was very, that was the most 2016 I think I got in 2016. Yeah. Was doing that and be like, oh my. 1738. 1738. I I think, yeah. Like that was the number, I think, also at the time. Yes. 100%. 1738 peak. 1738. Or 679 if you 679. Now listen. Double Fetty. Double Fetty.
SPEAKER_06Double Fetty.
SPEAKER_04Double waff. Double wa.
SPEAKER_06Don't ever say that again.
SPEAKER_04Double wa. Oh gosh. Listen. Anybody else have a story?
SPEAKER_03I don't think I have a story. I just wrote down a bunch of things that I remembered in 2016. Going back through my Instagram, which shall also never see the light of day. Um, Instagram archives, to be more specific. I just wrote down a bunch of things that I think people were, some of the things were what people were wearing, which I was one of those people. Lots of infinity scarves. Lots and lots of infinity scarves. Those like tall boots, the riding boots with the leggings. The combat. Like more specifically, it's like a legging with a long shirt with an infinity scarf and the tall boots.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna need everybody in this room to do this. Give your rundown if you're a daily fit, like outfit of the day, which you would have worn in 2016. Yes. Is that a we need we have to underarmor shorts and a 21 Pilots t-shirt?
SPEAKER_06That was like my designated fit. I literally just tried looking back at the photos that my mom since I didn't have social media than my mother did. Dude, it's like all I wore. I swear. Like it's like all of them.
SPEAKER_03I also think that the tall Uggs were more pop. I know the Uggs are still popular, but I think the taller ones were more popular in 2016. Um also North Face jackets. I feel like everyone had to have like a North Face or a Columbia jacket. And then on Instagram, I don't know if this was just me, but I feel like every picture it was like these washed-out filters where it was so bright. On Instagram was oh like these bright multicolor filters with borders. I I look back and every border, every picture had a border on it. I don't know why. The borders, the borders, and then like multiple pictures and one, like in the little colored border, yeah. With a colored filter. It was just the hot mess. It was a lot, it was a lot. It's a lot, it was overstimulating. Yep. So those are some of my 2016 main character moments. Yeah. Okay, are we going around and saying what outfits we wore in 2016?
SPEAKER_04Are you staying? I guess Alfred Staples. I guess staples. Yeah. I um personally chokers. I fear. From where? Oh my gosh. 2016 is the year that I worked at Claire's, too. Stop. Are you serious? I actually realistically, we probably crossed paths then. Of me buying a choker from Claire's.
SPEAKER_06You guys were intertwined at a young age.
SPEAKER_07That's why. It's one. It's pillower chind.
SPEAKER_04What about the green like Hunter jacket? Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_06I think I already said my own. I also had this red zip-up hoodie that I still have to this day. My little sister kind of took it from me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he took it. But well, you don't need it anymore because you were 12 wouldn't have that.
SPEAKER_06You're right. It's just like I just didn't want to. The memories. I didn't want to part with it.
unknownPart with it.
SPEAKER_04Part of it.
SPEAKER_06I was gonna pass it down from generation to generation.
SPEAKER_04You will we should listen to Blurry Face by 21 parts. You will listen to Lane Boy at Matt Lane Boy.
SPEAKER_06And Justin Timberlake, I still have the feeling. Just once in a while.
SPEAKER_04Occasionally. You listen to Chunky while we're Gracie. Do you have any other outfit staples you could think of?
SPEAKER_07Oh.
SPEAKER_02No, Lily, all my pictures are just me playing softball. My softball? No, but you did unlock a memory. It was like that hunter green jacket, and I wore like a white and black striped shirt. Had my leggings. The stripes, yeah. And then I had brown boots. Yeah, but then it had do you guys remember it was like those like sock cuff things where you would wear it? Yeah. Yes. Yeah. That was my fit, and it went hard. And it did, and I believe you.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that was my so you basically you dressed up as the one daughter from Despicable Me.
SPEAKER_04Marg. Margot, put some respect on her name. Margot. Rwanda Cosgrove.
unknownWait.
SPEAKER_05That's yeah, that's basically her fit, dog.
SPEAKER_03Life dates.
SPEAKER_04And what about it?
SPEAKER_03What about it? What about it?
SPEAKER_04Good. What was your mandated uniform, Kitty? Diaping.
SPEAKER_01Well, again, diapers.
SPEAKER_00Diapers.
SPEAKER_01At 10. Nine to ten. Okay, I'm not that young.
SPEAKER_06New bit, new bit unlocked. You can't even wear diapers until 10.
SPEAKER_01We're not starting that. I will say I was embarrassed. I'm maybe embarrassed to say it. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06You were before the trend. Everybody wears Jordan's.
SPEAKER_01You know, we're that's so true. I don't, yeah, I don't think it's 264 code.
SPEAKER_04All the time. What were those?
SPEAKER_03What were those like flip-flops like with the I don't know the brand, but it had like a talking about the fancy sandals were really in the stage union high. The fancy sandals that were like rainbows, like woven. Rainbow was big. No, the rainbow brand flip-flops were big. But like the no, it's like the flip-flops, but they had they were like really shiny gold or silver, and they had like the threads. I don't know, like they were woven. Yes, no, I exactly know what you're doing. I don't know what they were, but those are really big. And then were maxi skirts.
SPEAKER_04I remember I'm bestie in high school. We would coordinate when we're gonna wear our matching maxi skirts. You wear this one that day, and I wear my matching one that day.
SPEAKER_02We Charlotte Roos? Charlie Roos? That's where I got my maxi skirts. I had like a Chevron Maxi skirt.
SPEAKER_03Oh Chevron. The sideways stripe. That was like Shade Roos? Lily Pulitzer?
SPEAKER_04Oh gosh.
SPEAKER_03Was that 2016? All those bright patterns. I feel like some girls at my high school wore those bright like pattern like skirts and dresses. Southern comfort with Yeah, stuff like that. With those like shiny, shiny flip-flops.
SPEAKER_04Southern Cumber brother. I also frequently wore beanies. Oh that was a big part of my You said millennials. No, no, no, no, no, no, wait.
SPEAKER_01I was thinking, I was thinking when the person who should not be named ripped the beanie off of your hat. That was like a couple weeks ago. Yeah. I don't think I've witnessed a worse crime in my life.
SPEAKER_03I think that was the first hate crime I've ever witnessed. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like I was in actual shock. I could have said that. I don't know why hate crime. I don't know why you hate a crime. That's the only reason I was like, oh, because I thought about it.
SPEAKER_06I will say back in 2016, the one and only time I ever went to a Comic Con was back in 2016.
SPEAKER_04Do we have photo evidence?
SPEAKER_05I did, but I'm not showing you guys the video.
SPEAKER_04What movie did you dress up as? What did you wear? What were you?
SPEAKER_05No, Doctor Who.
SPEAKER_04Doctor? Which Doctor Who?
SPEAKER_05Matt Smith's. I had a Fez.
SPEAKER_04I had a Fez. Or a Fez. And the red hair. We need to have any evidence of it.
SPEAKER_05I'm not pulling up evidence.
SPEAKER_04Like what a booze. I can't. Okay, you should have evidence of you wearing that Spider-Man costume.
SPEAKER_06That was for a child's birthday party, and I rocked that costume.
SPEAKER_04Okay. We missed a section of the prompt for one of the segments.
SPEAKER_06Oh, what it was.
SPEAKER_04About I know we talked about like music like songs and albums, but we didn't talk about our main character songs.
SPEAKER_00Oh, songs that main songs.
SPEAKER_04I can't think of one. I feel like you don't have a main character song. Closer but Chain Smoker.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I don't know.
SPEAKER_06But if it was your specific song from 2016, like that's the problem.
SPEAKER_04Black Beatles. I'll just start naming them. I'll just start naming everything. Listen, my uh I still listen. It was actually on my rap this past year. Work by Rihanna. Good. 2016.
SPEAKER_00It was a good song.
SPEAKER_04The whole album was 2016. Gracie just reminded me of my actual main character song. Like Closer was over, aren't you? Starving by Hailey Seifel. Featuring. Huh? So Fetty Wap.
SPEAKER_06Oh no.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes, yes, yes. He took over my life in 2016. Track Queen. That unfortunately. As we've already talked. Yeah. Yeah. I was listening to Track Queen.
SPEAKER_03When did that I think it's No More I Love You's Haley Steinfeld? It was that? Was that 2016?
SPEAKER_06The only song that I know is the one that she ruined the riff-off with in Pitchens.
Games: Was It 2016 Or Not
SPEAKER_03No, it's not called No, it's called I Love You's Haley Steinfeld. Oh no. I love you until I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_06I forgot that she had like a career. I was gonna say failing music career, but she didn't really fail.
SPEAKER_04Start starting with like probably like a few years.
SPEAKER_06No, like she did really good and then just stopped.
SPEAKER_04Like what was the other time? Most girls that was 2018. I know that for a fact. Pick up the phone, baby. Another thing that I realized when I went back, why was it like low-key? I feel like so there's a phenomena in 2014 where it was like having like sorry it was having like Indian sounding beats in every single dance. Oh my gosh! Like every music video.
SPEAKER_06Every music video had like an like it was like an Indian solo dance.
SPEAKER_05Like, go back. I'm not even joking about what I was talking about.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I was very intense in 2016, but R R R for 2014.
SPEAKER_07No, I know it's I agree.
SPEAKER_04But 2016 had like the reggaeton like B dance for no reason. And I was like, what like why is this the main so both dance?
SPEAKER_06No, but there's a lot of there's a lot of music videos, and I just I I saw a video about it like just a week ago, and I thought I was like, oh, that's a weird coincidence. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Swallow. Oh gosh. When you didn't swallow her. Um Mary Grace. We were trying to think of like songs on the way here, and one that Mary Grace and we played on the way here. I spy.
SPEAKER_03I spy with my little eye. Yeah, the cutie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01This one's just us singing a 15 seconds bad.
SPEAKER_05I feel like this is just us.
SPEAKER_04This is just us naming music.
SPEAKER_05Stimming music. Not only that, but like just mumbling music very poorly.
SPEAKER_03Mary Grace loves Mo Bama. I do.
SPEAKER_06I feel like that's you're not as innocent as you make yourself out to be, Mary Grace.
SPEAKER_01A criminal and a criminal misdemeanor?
SPEAKER_04And she knows Mo Bama. Mary Grace's top three things ever. Horses. Can you imagine Mary Grace riding in the staple? Like, wait, I just need to sweep my song, guys. JPL speaker on the back of the horse.
SPEAKER_05The horse's basement is like a freaking Honda. It's like a Honda with like the bases in it. It's a horse.
SPEAKER_04Imagine you're on a peaceful trail ride.
SPEAKER_01She's so dangerous.
SPEAKER_03I just I don't know. I think it was just the time that it came out. It was a different time. And it just reminds me of that different time. Not that it's a great song.
SPEAKER_04I think it's just I think it's just weird out that you describe while riding a horse.
SPEAKER_03It just doesn't match. Oh my god, what can I say? I'm a complex person. Very great.
SPEAKER_04Listen, Mamma was the song. It just was a different song. It was a different song. It was a different song.
SPEAKER_03Do you guys, does anyone else have any embarrassing songs that they loved?
SPEAKER_04I think sorry. What was um Penda, panda, panda, panda. Oh my god. What the fuck? What was panda?
SPEAKER_06That's on par with.
SPEAKER_03It was indeed panda.
SPEAKER_01I agree. I agree. I agree. I agree. I agree. Yeah, that one is a good song. Man. I think we might need to steer away from the music unless that is all 2016 was, right? We gotta like it. I'm starting to feel like that's all. Is that what made 2016? That's what it was? Okay.
SPEAKER_04I mean the summer of 2016 have lived in infamy since it happened. Infamy's my Yeah. But then infamy. Infamy is usually used for tragedy. What was that? I don't know if my trade. Listen.
SPEAKER_06I I will stand on this. Me and Morgan talking about it a little bit before the podcast. I kind of like 2018 and 19 more.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I liked it. I think 2018 was kind of peak.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I think that was really peak. I didn't really like it.
SPEAKER_04I agree.
SPEAKER_06Like twenty sixteen, I I was also really young, so like it might have been different.
SPEAKER_04It makes sense. Is it a good idea? I saw Morgan.
SPEAKER_06You were uh conspiring about music over there?
SPEAKER_04Oh, it was made in the AM, One Direction came out at the end of 2015.
SPEAKER_02It did, I agree.
SPEAKER_04You know, I love One Direction, but Gracie is a huge One Direction fan. Yes.
SPEAKER_02What about it?
SPEAKER_04As you should be, though, it's not a good thing. As you should be. Wait, hold on. Were you uh what what girly were you?
SPEAKER_02Um, Niall. Nile August. Okay, okay. I was too Nile and Nick Jonas are the same. You know what I'm saying? Like if you like Niall, you like Nick. Yeah. You know? They're hand in hand. But if you like Joe, if you like Joe, you like Harry. I love Joe. And if you like Liam, you like Kevin. You like it. You like Joe. I just see it like that. Do you know what I'm saying? You like it. But what if you like Zayn?
SPEAKER_04What if you like Zayn? That's I feel like the fellows under her Joe as well.
SPEAKER_02That's like a mix you go back and forth between Joe and Nick. You go back and forth.
SPEAKER_04Like there's some like I was a Zane girlie and I'm a Joe Girly. I have no idea. Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_02You go back and forth.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's a Kevin Girlie. Have you listened to any of Zane's music? It's only like pillows. Pillow Toll! Dig numbers. Oh my god. Did numbers. No, you don't understand. That song was so good. I couldn't listen to it immediately.
SPEAKER_06Mind you, we're all Christian, by the way. Like very, very.
SPEAKER_03You should definitely probably not listen to at least the song that they said that I listened to. The song that shall not be named.
SPEAKER_04The song that shall not be named. Gary Grace knows none of the worst that songs. I actually don't know that song. Do you know what they're saying? I know. You say is nothing.
SPEAKER_06I like that Grace is totally momming you right now, Morgan.
SPEAKER_02She's trying to give us a setting.
SPEAKER_05Guys, we can't say it. I got like here you go.
SPEAKER_03She's singing. Should we do the chords? I got myself off. Alright, so this episode was about music.
SPEAKER_05So it was supposed to be 2016.
SPEAKER_04But it's just like 2016, we covered some stuff.
SPEAKER_01Before we stopped the recording, just so we have it. My mom was like, do this on the podcast. This is pretty Mary Grace. They all stole this video. She's I'm kidding, she didn't actually, but in memory. For the listeners at home. I think we can post it on Instagram, right?
SPEAKER_06Listeners at home, it's seeds, which maybe in a picture frame.
SPEAKER_04For canonically has stolen.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so she's famous for stealing.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so it's a perfect picture. She's leaving the store with the thing, a lipstick, a pack of seeds going to her horse with her JBL.
SPEAKER_05Somebody animate it. Animate them. Animate.
SPEAKER_03Animate it. It's a frame. It's a frame of some flower seeds that says in memory of Mary Grace's first crime.
SPEAKER_01Amazing. We were just, we were at the store today, and why do they have seeds in February? Is that the time? I don't know, but they were just all over, and I was like, this is a sign. And it is hilarious.
SPEAKER_06Usually the groundhog says otherwise. You know what, guys? That's why the seeds are out.
SPEAKER_03Good job for turning bad memory into a or a bad idea into a funny thing. That was hilarious. That is awesome. Thank you, Gail. In 2016, perchance? It could have been. Honestly, it could have been that. That was a really different time. Shut up.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I will attach. And I took a picture of Mary Grace while she was looking at her sheets. And it's a picture of Mary Grace in a hunter green jacket riding a horse with a JBL speaker, playing Mobaba with an Infinity Scarf. Oh.
SPEAKER_04Oh my gosh, it looks good. Shut up. Expect to see it on the post. This is Peak 2016.
SPEAKER_05I don't like AI, but that's peak.
Personal Stories, Memes, And Chaos
SPEAKER_04It's spoilers for the next episode with no content. And that has to be my gosh. That's so funny. Wow. Shut up. It's not a face. I want you to be mine again, baby.
SPEAKER_01That's how we can end up. Stop playing guitar. I swear.
SPEAKER_05I swear. I swear.
SPEAKER_04I can barely hear you.
SPEAKER_05I'm going to break my mother.
SPEAKER_04Brooks, can you play Freddy Bob?
SPEAKER_05Do you take requests, Brooks? Alright, thank you.
SPEAKER_01No, I have to say, thank you for listening to this podcast, uh, tuning in. We appreciate we appreciate you guys. All of you, thank you so much. I hope you enjoyed this episode. Please follow us for begging you.
SPEAKER_04Um begging on our knees. We want our time.
SPEAKER_01All right. And then the music plays. There we go.
