How Do I Share the Gospel with People Far from God?

Many Christians think they don't share their faith because they don't know how. But what if the real issue is that we're relying on ourselves instead of the Holy Spirit? In this episode, we talk about how God empowers ordinary believers with boldness, wisdom, and opportunities to share Jesus. The Gospel spreads best not through better methods, but through Spirit-filled people.

It's a big deal because this is episode 10. We've made it to double digits, man. This is super exciting. So for those that have been joining us along the way, we want to thank you so much uh for getting us to episode 10. We hope that we keep uh giving you good content and we hope that one day we can be together to celebrate triple digits as we get to episode 100, which is crazy for us to think that's two years away. But uh today's question is a question that I'm excited about. And I know you say I say that a lot, but this is a different kind of excitement because this is an excitement that I believe if we can get this question right, the world will be a radically different place. Not only a radically different place in the world, but eternity will be a radically different place. And the question that we're gonna be answering is how do I share the gospel with people far from God? And really what the heart of that question is, is when I'm reading these questions, there's a lot of questions like that because we've been in a series and at fellowship talking about Acts of the Holy Spirit and talking about being empowered by the Holy Spirit and going out and sharing the gospel from people far from them. We see in Acts chapter two that that, or in Acts, yeah, Acts chapter two twice, we see 3,000 people come to know Jesus, and then right after that, 5,000 people come to know Jesus. We all want to be a part of effectiveness, we all want to be a part of major fruit, we want to be a part of the harvest. We know that the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few, and we get excited and we want to run through a wall, we're like, yes, I'm gonna share the gospel, and then we get into the moment where we get to share the gospel, and we're like, but what do I say and how do I do it? And how do I not be weird about it? You know, there's those jokes on you see, there's a guy in an elevator, and you know, it's I think it's just a funny joke that I don't even know if it's like the skit guys or something like that a while ago, but I remember seeing it in a church service years ago, and you know, where they're talking about the gospel, and the guy gets on the elevator and the person says, You going up or down? And he says, Oh, I'm going down, and you know, his eyes get big and you can see sweat beating on his brow. And he says, Speaking of going down, uh, hell's pretty far down, you know? You going to heaven or hell? And like the person looked at him like he had 18 heads, and it's like, doesn't it feel like that sharing the gospel sometimes? We have the desire, but we don't want to be weird about it. And I actually had a conversation with someone about this the other day. And they're like, we need more classes on how to share the gospel with people. And I agree, there needs to be equipping in this, and that's why we're talking about this on this podcast. But what if I told you the reason that we're not sharing the gospel isn't because we don't have a script for it? What if I told you the reason why we're not living a dangerous life for the kingdom of God isn't because we haven't been to enough classes about it, isn't because we don't have enough knowledge of scripture. What if I told you the reason we're not sharing the gospel has nothing to do with notes, has nothing to do with classes, has nothing to do with knowledge, but it has everything to do with the fear that drives us. Just to prove it, I told this to Russ beforehand. I was praying over this podcast right before we started recording it. And I believe wholeheartedly that the Holy Spirit is in each and every one of us as believers. The Holy Spirit is fully. Think about that. The Spirit of God is fully in me. The Spirit of God is fully in Rust. The Spirit of God is fully in you. And when I look at Moses, and Moses goes up to God and he says, God, like, and God says, I'm gonna use you to set my people free. And Moses goes, but but God, I have I I've I've I've I've stuttered like how I how do I do that? God's like, I'll be with you. He's like, but what am I gonna say? God's like, I'll be with you. He goes, but but but but but why will Pharaoh ever listen to me? How will I be effective? And God says, Moses, I will be with you. You don't need to know what to say, you don't need to have your stutter be healed. I am the God of the universe. I am the God that said, Let there be and there was, and I am telling you that I'm just gonna use you as a vessel to proclaim my word to Pharaoh, and I will set my people free through you. It is not up to you, it is up to you walking with me to find effectiveness in it. And what I want to tell us as we go into this episode and talking about sharing the gospel, what if I told you that you and I have it one million infinitely times better than Moses? God told Moses, I will be with you, walking next to you. And what we see in Acts, when the Holy Spirit comes upon the disciples, the Holy Spirit doesn't just say, I will be with you. The Holy Spirit is in us. We're not just walking with the power of God, we have the power of God in us. I don't believe it has anything to do with notes, systems. Well, you gotta let me know how I enter into conversation so it's not weird. It has nothing to do with that, it has everything to do with our ability or our inability to walk with the Holy Spirit. And to prove it, this is a terrifying reality. For those that have ever spoken in front of a camera, for those that have ever been on a stage. Normally I don't stick to my notes, but as you can see on my laptop, I don't know if you can even see it, there has been no notes, and I'm gonna close my laptop and I'm going to do an entire episode with no notes. And what Russ and I got to do beforehand is we said, Holy Spirit, you are in me. Holy Spirit, you are in this room. Would we just submit to you? Because, Holy Spirit, we believe that you are so powerful that you can speak through me with no notes. Because I believe wholeheartedly that if we walked with the Spirit, the Spirit would calm our fears, the Spirit will give us words, the Spirit will give us favor, the Spirit will tell us how to say and when to say it. And you know what's so crazy about the Spirit? God doesn't need us. He doesn't. He's not like, man, like biting his nails. Like, I hope they do this right. I hope they're not just a weirdo and gonna say, well, speaking of hot, hell's hot, you going to hell? God's not looking at that and going, like, well, now that person's gonna die and go to hell because you screwed it up, bro. That's not God. He doesn't need us. And what he is doing is behind the scenes. He is wanting to partner with us to bring people to him while simultaneously. This is a crazy thing. The person that he's putting on our mind, that neighbor, that waiter, that waitress, that friend, that coworker, that person in our life that doesn't know Jesus, not only is God saying, Go to that person and share me with them, God is also working behind the scenes in their life. He's putting circumstances since the very beginning, he has been calling them to himself. And all we get to do is be the person that plants a seed and then water it and then walk away. We're not in charge of how deep those roots go. We're not in charge of how much fruit that gives. That is all up to the Holy Spirit. I don't believe it has anything to do with the classes, the knowledge. Actually, what John Mark Comer talks about is the thing that keeps us from sharing the gospel has nothing to do with knowledge at all. But there's three things. I actually heard this from a coworker the other day. There's three things that keep us from being effective gospel sharers. The first thing is speed. I think so many of us we live the American dream and we go so fast that we don't take the time to look around and say, God, will you give me your eyes? You know, I I've heard from people as we've been doing this acts of the Holy Spirit series, I just don't, you know, they say, I just don't know if I'm surrounded by people who don't know Jesus. I everyone around me knows Jesus. And if that's true, praise God, hallelujah, God's working in your life. But I'm going to guess that's not true. You're like, what? How do you know that? Man, because I don't think that the people we think know Jesus actually know Jesus. I think in a Bible belt town, there's actually a lot of people. We talk about there's 11,000 people that on a census say they don't know Jesus at in Cersei, Arkansas, 40%. I think that number is way higher because I think there's a lot of people that go to church and go through the motions and do the legalistic things and they're not going to heaven. They are not written in the Lamb's book of life. Like, and I think we just go so fast and we just assume all of these people around us are believers. And then if we took the time to slow down, if we took the time to partner, remember, all of this, every single part of this is partnering with the Holy Spirit. It's not up to our gifts, it's not up to our talents, it's not up to our sight. It's up to Holy Spirit. Would you give me the eyes to see people the way that you see people? Would you allow me to slow down for five seconds to look around at this restaurant that I'm in, to look around at the cubicles that I'm around, to look around at the offices and the family members that I'm around, the neighbors that I'm around. Would you open my eyes to have me see those people as you do? But too often we're just going so fast we don't take the time to see. And one of the one of the reasons we don't share the gospel is we don't take the time to say, God, would you give me eyes to see? And we don't take the time to build deep and meaningful relationships with the people around us to really get to know their hearts. So it's speed, we're too busy. That's one. Two, the second thing that that keeps us from sharing the gospel, again, has nothing to do with knowledge, has nothing to do with gifts, it has to do with something that you and I probably struggle a lot with. Image. Man, like I don't want to be weird. I mean, legitimately, you would be shocked the amount of times this question was asked and the word weird was in it. I want to find a way to make it a part of the title, but it's like so long it won't fit on the YouTube cover photo. But it's I just don't want to be weird. My I don't want my image to be tainted. Like they like me. I don't want them to think I'm some judgmental, you know, person that's like condemning them to hell. Because that's that that's the M of sometimes of believers. I don't want them to think I'm weird. I don't want them to stop being my friend. I don't want to walk into work and they avoid me like the plague. I don't want to stop being invited to lunch. I don't want to I don't want to be removed from the group chat. And I don't want to be labeled as this, you know, holier than thou righteous roller. And and so we allow fear or sorry, image to dictate. Like we don't want to look bad. And this is the crazy thought about non-believers. I actually got to talk about this in a message a few weeks ago. You know, I think we think about non-believers as being the biggest threat to us, the thing that's going to taint our image the most. Uh and at the end of the day, uh, the more I share the gospel with people who are far from him, you know, we just talked about the LGBTQ community. You're like, wow, you're gonna bring that up again? Yeah, because it's real, it's on our minds. I'm not just gonna avoid it because it's weird. It shouldn't be weird. LGBTQ people should not be weird. They are people who need Jesus. They're people that we get to love into the kingdom of God. It's not weird. We just love them into the kingdom of God. But I think we think to ourselves like the church, like you watch news stations and it drives me absolutely up a wall. It's like, man, the biggest threat to democracy is the LGBTQ community, is the left. No, it's not. Because I will tell you something. I have been able to recently, and this is not one of these, I need you to say, I'm gonna be sharing stories at the last half of this podcast of how the Lord has been able to use me, and as I've been able to partner with the Spirit and loving on people, like this has nothing to do with me. Again, it has everything to do with the Holy Spirit, and because I can be submitted to the Holy Spirit, like the Lord is able to use me to do powerful things in their life. But every single time I've ever been able to share the gospel with someone in the LGBTQ community, almost every single time, and I say almost, and there's one story where it's not, but it's a really good redemptive story, there's tears in their eyes, they're leaning in, they're focusing. When I'm sharing the gospel with them, I'm like, I just want to let you know, man. I I just want to say, Jesus loves you. And I just want to say, like, he loves you so much, he sent his son to die for you. I don't really need to know your story, I don't need to know your present, I don't need to know your past, I don't need to know your future, but you are loved, and he loves you so much that he wants you to call upon his name so he can save you. And I just did this the other day to somebody that's far from Jesus, and they're leaning across the table at me, and I was nervous as I'll get out. I'm like, what are they gonna think of me? Are they gonna stop being my friend? And they leaned across and there were tears in their eyes. They said, Can I hug you? I was like, Yes, and they cried and they said, I just needed to hear that because it's been a long time since I've heard it. I was like, man, like not only did the devil lie to me and say that they're gonna not be my friend anymore and they're gonna look at me bad, but they love me more for it. And so speed keeps us, image keeps us, and the last thing is fear, which kind of goes into image a little bit. We're just afraid. Well, what if I say the wrong thing? What if what what if this changes my reality? What if I get fired from my job? I mean, those are all things, listen to this, that have to do not with knowledge, not with class classes, not with understanding. It has to do with our inability to partner with the Holy Spirit and say, Holy Spirit, would you give me eyes? Holy Spirit, would you remind me that my identity is not rooted in what these people think of me? My identity is rooted fully in you. Holy Spirit, would you eliminate all fear? Because you promise us in 1 John that perfect love casts out fear. And you know what? I'm doing something that's really hard, but I'm doing something that you're commanding me. So would you wash away the fear? Or sometimes we just have to do what Elizabeth Elliott says. Sometimes fear doesn't go away, and we just have to do it afraid. And so again, we're no notes right now. And there have been, I want to share some stories because I believe when you hear stories, that's something that can be repeatable. That's something that you hear that you're like, wait, I can do that. So one of the best stories I like to share, uh, and I can, I won't share names because I actually don't have this person's permission to do it. Uh, but there's a restaurant here in town that I love going to. I love it. Uh, and there's a lot of non-believers there. And one of the things I realized early on in my ministry life is I started realizing that the only people I had in my life were believers. So when I'm hearing these uh sermons and these articles and read these articles written, and when I'm preaching sermons about sharing the gospel with people far from him, I'm realizing I don't have people in my life that are far from me. And one of the things the Lord led me to do is to, hey, why don't you go to restaurants, the same restaurants, try to sit with the same waiters and waitresses that don't know me and build relationships with them? And one of the things I do at every restaurant, if you ever go out to eat with me, I will ask every time. I I will say almost every time, I would say 99% of the time, I will ask that waiter waitress, hey, we're gonna pray before we eat. Is there anything that we can pray for you for? And I'll, or I'll say, Hey, I love Jesus. And I don't really know where you're at with that, but I love Jesus and I love to pray to him and I love to pray for people. Is there anything I can pray for you about? And that's a really scary reality. You're like, you say that, you do that. I will tell you, there's really never been a time that I've ever asked that question, except one time, and again, it's the exception to the rule where people have gotten upset with that because they're like, that's really sweet. Like, you love me enough to see me, you love me enough to build that relationship with me and to care enough to say, how can I pray for you? They don't need to know Jesus to know that that that's a really touching thing. There have been so many people who have cried that sat across from us and just been like, oh my goodness, like, can I just share what's going on in my life? For the first time in a long time, those people felt listened to. And I did this one time at a restaurant, it's the only time I ever got kind of bashed a little bit. But I asked this person, I said, Hey, can I pray for you? Can we pray for you in any way? And I was with a buddy of mine, and they looked at us, and I could tell that they, you know, based off of their response, they did not like that. And they said, No, thank you. And they walked away. And the rest of the time, I'll tell you guys, it was weird. Like they were avoiding us, they kind of put our food down hard. They didn't really ask us how we were doing. We didn't get any refills, they avoided us like the plague, and I was like, Great. There's image, there's fear. I'm freaking out over here. I'm like, now I can't come back to this restaurant because this person hates me. There's definitely spit in my food. And the next time we come, I just felt I just went in again, partnering with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, if this person is there, would we get their table? And I walked in and I just felt the Holy Spirit say, Hey, like Ben asked them if she's here. And I asked, Hey, is this person here? And they're like, Yeah, like can we get them? And they're like, Yeah. They kind of looked at us because that probably doesn't happen often. Like, they don't people don't say they want this person. And so they come up to the table kind of excited because they go to the back and say, Hey, you had some people specially request you, and the smile went away. Like, oh, it's these people again. And as we're serving food and and as as we're as we're going through the day, uh, she comes up to our table and another waitress that's there that we know that we've been able to minister to knew Jesus. Like, we asked that question, how we can pray, and she's like, Oh, honey, I love Jesus. And she saw what we were doing, and the waitress goes up to our waitress and puts her arm around him and says, I just want to let you know, these guys right here, they like, I know there's a lot of people who talk a big game about Jesus, but these guys actually love Jesus. Right. Watch. Now all of a sudden, this person right here almost said their name, like came back and sat at her table and started crying. Like, I'm so sorry I viewed you like that. Like, I've just been really hurt by the church. I've been really hurt by God. And so when I saw you guys ask those questions, I thought you were just like everybody else. And then they just unloaded and just started crying about things that they were going on in their life. Like the Holy Spirit gave that favor. It's like, how do I have favor? We don't do that. The Holy Spirit, through somebody else, sent that person over to give us favor with them. That built a two-year relationship with this person. I was in there every single week with a buddy of mine or two or just me, and we're sharing. I mean, we probably shared the gospel in 18 different ways. And then you're like, how do I do that? Man, you just ask if you can pray, and you're like, hey, like, I have a question for you. You said you were hurt by the church. This is later. It's a relationship. Like, what happened? Can I ask that question? Like, are you in church now? What do you believe now? Do you have a faith? And now that there's relationships, she goes, Well, I used to have a faith. I used to be Catholic, and like, man, and then it gets to the point of like, hey, can I share my story with you? And I got to share, I have a 15-second testimony that I that I share, and it looks a lot like this like it's before Jesus, blank, or before, dot dot dot, and then but God, dot, dot, dot. And then, but now, dot, and now, dot, dot, dot. And so I said, uh one one time in my life I was defined by anxiety, I was defined by fear, and I was defined by somebody who really wanted to be loved by God, but I couldn't. I hated it so much, and I ran so much away from God that I became an atheist. But God, one day, when I was 19 years old, I was invited to a Christian camp, and I came into contact with who Jesus really was, not who the church says them to be, not what Christians says them to be, but a God who loves us, loves us so much he sent a son to die for us. And that son loves us so much that he wants us to call upon his name so he can save us. And now, man, I I love Jesus. I'm I'm a child of his, and I just want to tell people that they are loved. You know, it's simple as that, and those things hit. And finally, after two years, we're sharing the gospel, it's they were getting a long way. They're asking questions about faith, and we invite them to church. And she ends up coming to church, and the Holy Spirit does what the Holy Spirit does in the middle of worship. She like leans over to me. She's like, I feel weird, I feel odd. And I'm like, man, that's the Holy Spirit, and I'm praying over them. And then in that message on Easter, that that person came to know Jesus. No, man, it it's it's just being intentional. It's seeing people for who they are. It's not allowing us to move so fast that we miss them. It's not allowing the fear of what's going to happen to get in the way, the fear of not knowing what to say, not knowing what to do, of being weird, the image, like of them looking at us differently and spitting in our food, not wanting to be our waiter or waitress anymore. But man, like that was a big story for me. And so, like, one of the things that I tell people all the time is stop trying to find God to bring those people to you. Like, don't just ask God, just bring me the non-believers, because I don't think that's going to happen. Because when you see Jesus talk about the Great Commission, he says, go. He doesn't say sit right here and I'll bring you all the people that don't know me. He says, Go into all the world. Go into the restaurants, go into the neighborhoods. If you know someone in your in your neighborhood that doesn't know Jesus, invite them over for dinner. Ask them how you can pray for them. Prayer walk your neighborhood, prayer walk your apartment complex, prayer walk uh the places if you're in college at Harding, like prayer walk the university and just say, Holy Spirit, would you give me eyes to see? Holy Spirit, would you give me favor and would you show me the people that don't know? And would you just put them in my life and would you give me the boldness to preach your word? And there's another story. Uh there's two more stories that I'll share. Because I'll tell you, this is not always easy for me. This is something that I feel like the Lord has gifted me in and I can be very good at. Uh, but this is also something uh that I have a lot of fear in a lot. And there's another restaurant in town that I like to go to, and uh, this person uh has not ever really been super kind to me. Uh, I've I know all the people, and I'll ask people how I can pray, and and almost every time I came in, this person would avoid me. And I could just tell that this person was like, Meh. And found out this person was in the LGBTQ community. And one day I'm about to walk into the restaurant, and that person came out and saw their family. And uh I saw them, and that person is a woman and is married to a woman. And has kids, and and I was gonna go say hi to them, but I was like, they don't like me anyway when I'm like by myself. I'm not gonna sh not sure they're gonna like me very much with their family. And so the next time I go in the restaurant, I just say, 'Hey, I saw you with your family the other day, and their eyes kind of looked weird.' And I said, 'Is is I saw you some with some people? I think it was your family. Like, what does your family look like?' And she she said, 'Well, that was my wife and my kids.' I was like, That's awesome. What are their names? And I asked their names. She told me their names. I said, Man, I would love to meet them one day. And from that moment on, that that person didn't avoid me anymore. That person, then when I would ask prayers, like they would come up to me and share, just I need prayer requests. I or I have this prayer request. They would talk about some things going on in their life that were really hard. And now they're starting to view me as an outlet. And and one day I'm walking in the restaurant and I felt convicted by God because God's like, close the deal, bro. This person you keep sharing me with, but you're not sharing the good news of the gospel. And I was like, God would watch, watch this. This is crazy. God, would you give me an open door? And I am sitting there with the friend, actually, the same friend that was there when that person at the other restaurant got saved. Maybe he's my good luck charm. And this person at this restaurant comes over and sits at our table. This is a fast food restaurant, people. This isn't a waiter or waitress. They came over and sat and started crying and said, I need you to pray for me. And I started praying for her. And I got done praying for her. And I said, I just feel led to tell you this. I just feel led to tell you that right now in this moment, you are so loved. God loved you so much that he sent his son to die for you, that he, that, that he put all of your sin on his shoulders as if you were the one that committed it and he died the death that you were supposed to die. Not because he had to, but because he loved you. And that we know, and you probably have heard this, that he rose again three days later, defeating your sin. And I want to tell you that if you call upon his name to save you, it doesn't matter where you've been, it doesn't matter who you're married to, it doesn't matter what you think or don't think about yourself, you can be saved and you can become a child of God. And they're just crying at this point. And they hug me. And listen, right now in that story, there's not a happy ending right now. But that person after that ends up going in the back and getting me a water bottle from their business. Like I need you, like they, you know, those Christmas gifts that like restaurants can give, those really nice like Nolgen water bottles or those like a wall of water bottles, gave me one and just said, I don't really know what else to do, but I want to give this to you because she felt the love of Jesus. What did I do? Nothing. But what did I do? I walked to that restaurant, I said, Holy Spirit, would you give me favor? Remember, I prayed that. I have not been following through. Would you give me an opportunity? And what happened the next time I go in the restaurant? She sits next to me. God stirred her heart because God is working behind the scenes. God is the one that opens eyes. What he just calls us to do is to go. And so who is in your life that doesn't know Jesus? Who in your life do you want to share the gospel with? Who in the life do you want to be a part of in welcoming them into the family of God? The reason why you don't share the gospel with them is not because you don't know all of the answers. The reason why we don't share the gospel is because we don't allow ourselves to partner with the Holy Spirit enough to see people the way that God sees people and walk in boldness the way that God has us to. The reason why we're not sharing the gospel isn't because God's keeping us away from those people to protect them from us. The reason why we're not sharing the gospel is because we allow fear to dictate our lives. And I will tell you, nine times out of ten, when we share the gospel with people, like I think we think to ourselves that there's going to be this big explosion. They're going to be like, well, where did dinosaurs come from, bro? And if they ask that question, just be like, I don't know. But what I do know is Jesus loves you. What I do know is Jesus wants to save you. And you don't have to have a seminary degree to do it. You just have to walk in boldness and in faith. And I believe that if we could get out of our own way and stop letting the enemy make us believe that we're too far gone, that we don't know enough, that we have too much of a past to be able to share the gospel with people, and we can just walk into every situation and walk into every day, partnering with the Holy Spirit. I believe wholeheartedly that what's going to happen is revival is going to break through wherever we are. People that are not allowing these things to get in the way, excuses to get in the way, like Moses did. If Moses would have allowed those excuses to get in the way, we would not know his name today. And you know what God would have done? God would have chosen somebody else. What I don't want for you, and what I don't want for me, is for us to experience that same thing, to miss out on the blessing of God because we don't know the power that's in us. Guys, you're like, I don't know what to do. Hey, God is in you. God can do it, and you know what? God will do it. How do I share the gospel without being weird? You probably can't, and it probably will be weird. But you know what? God uses the weak to shame the strong. He uses what is foolish in the world to shame the wise. The power of the cross is folly to those who are perishing. And if we just partner with the Spirit and allow the Spirit to give us words, boldness, favor, just like the disciples did in Acts chapter 2, just like Peter did, then I believe the world would be a different place.
