Welcome to Inside Our Minds Podcast. I'm your moderator, Aaron Collier, and I'm joined weekly by two amazing co-hosts, Robbie McIntosh and Ashama Rucker. Robbie has autism and Ashama has Noonan syndrome, but that doesn't stop them from living life on their own terms. Every episode, we take you into the minds of Robbie and Ashama as they share their perspectives and experiences as adults who don't let their disabilities define them. Keep listening to be inspired.
SPEAKER_05Good morning and happy Monday. It's your co-host, Ashama Rucker, and our other co-host, Robbie McIntosh. And our favorite narrator, Aaron Collier.
SPEAKER_04Let's go for the second week in a row, man. Y'all are awesome. Yes. Y'all are awesome. Robbie with the fire intro last week. Ashama. Yes. Fire intro this week. Let's go. And I needed that boost of energy because holy crap, our morning has been crazy. Right. Crazy. I got to the office this morning by myself, cut my computer on, ready to podcast. And I realized I forgot to charge my computer. So yeah. So right when Ashama and Robbie get to the office ready to podcast, my computer is dead. But what do we do? Go out to breakfast. Yes, we did. Yes, we did. We we went out to breakfast. We were like, you know what? This ain't gonna kill our vibe. So we let the let the computer charge a little bit, and hey, we're here and ready to go. But even that wasn't easy. What the heck happened?
SPEAKER_05It wouldn't work.
SPEAKER_04I'm telling you, something was going on. Like our microphones weren't working or recording. And man, I'm telling you, look, we might have 12 episodes right now, but we are definitely not professionals. You know what I mean? Like we just started learning this stuff a few months ago. So I'll hey, hey, at least it's working now, right? Yep. It's working now and everything's good. And you know what I could use?
SPEAKER_06What?
SPEAKER_04A vacation.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know what I mean? Pretty stressful day. I could use a vacation, and that's what we're gonna talk about today. Yay! But before we dive into that, you want to talk about your week?
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_04What'd you do this week?
SPEAKER_05Um, this week I chilled.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I chilled this week. Um I didn't really do nothing, but I tell you what, on Friday after the podcast, I cooked my co-host Robbie, spaghetti.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, that looked good too.
SPEAKER_05Yes. And then I went to the store on Monday, and I made spaghetti myself, which is on TikTok, and um, I put the whole bag of mozzarella cheese on it with the uh turkey, pepperoni. It was different noodles, but it tasted so good. I still got something left. I'm gonna eat some for dinner.
SPEAKER_04It looked like like a pizza baked spaghetti. Was it was it spaghetti? You said it was different noodles. What kind of noodles was it?
SPEAKER_05So it was the noodles with the pea.
SPEAKER_04P. P, P P P. I have no idea.
SPEAKER_05Is uh the noodles like Penny pasta.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Penny pasta, dude. That's good. I bet that was good. Honestly, that was probably better. You know what's good too? ZD. Like a baked ZD. Yeah, really, really good. Robbie, what'd you do this week?
SPEAKER_00Well, I have nothing exciting that to report, but I'd say that I was like a sham. You know, I was chilling. Uh all this week I did the usual stuff. Um my um I got to go to um my day program um and um work and all that stuff and usual stuff. I will say too that this past Wednesday I went to my primary care doctor for one, and I realized that one of the students who actually was a student getting her degree in in psychology or being a doctor, whatever. And I will say also, too, that one of my coworkers is a doctor of some sort. I asked her at work yesterday, are you a professor? And she said, No, I'm not a professor. I just got my degree in um being a teacher, teaching coach of some kind. But anyhow, to stay on point, this person that I was at, I saw the doctor, happens to be a member of my church. We're not in the same congregation, but but she basically went to BYU. That's how I learned that she was LDS. And so that's one great thing that happened. And I will say also that I enjoyed cooking with a shaman last week. It was it was really fun and hope to do that most Fridays or Mondays if possible.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and if that lady is listening right now, shout out to you. When I'm sure you all the listeners know by now, when me and Robbie go to appointments, we like to broadcast our podcast a little bit, right? Yeah, right. And Robbie found out they have a lot in common, and she was she was going to school to be a PA. That's what she was. So she's in her two years right now of trying to finish her PA degree. So, man, sounds like you didn't do much this week, but dude, sometimes that's the best thing ever. You know what I mean? Like when you just get to chill and relax, and there's just nothing to do, like sometimes those are the best weeks. Like it's good to be uplifting and do a lot of stuff and stay not busy, but or stay busy, but sometimes when you're not busy, that's a blessing.
SPEAKER_05When you're not busy, all you gotta do is sit back and play video games.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, sit back, relax, chill. And sometimes that's really, really good for the mind. So, speaking of the mind, you really you ready to dive inside our minds?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_04Let's go. Well, then it sounds like it is time to welcome you inside our minds. All right, let's get into it. So last week, I really was jealous of you, Robbie. You just got back on vacation. I saw the passion in your voice about how much fun you had on vacation. And then I realized, like, Ashama, she's almost traveled the world. Like, you're, you know what I mean? You're going on cruises and doing your thing. And I was like, you know what? Like, it'd be cool to kind of have some fun with the topic today. I know the last few have been kind of kind of deep. You know what I mean? So let's just have a fun episode, talk about some vacations, maybe some dream vacations. And you know what? Let's do it, right? Yep. Let's do it. Robbie, we'll start with you. Where are all the places that you have been?
SPEAKER_00That's a good question. Um, I've been to Wyoming for one. I've been to Utah. Wyoming and Utah are the two main parts of the world where I have family. My cousins and my grandma live in Utah. On my mom's side of the family, my grandma lives there. And then Wyoming, my grandma on my dad's side of the family lives there. And uh my my aunt, my dad's sister, lives there, and I have some family out in Wyoming too. There are a lot of Macintoshes that live out in Wyoming. That's all because my dad was born there, and that's how he grew up. Nice where my parents grew up. And and I and and in addition to above all that, I've been to the beach too. Yeah, I've been to Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach, uh Topsail, Shinkateague Island, etc. And those are really cool places to be as as well. So I've I I those are the places that I've been to.
SPEAKER_04What is your favorite beach activity?
SPEAKER_00Well, if I would name one, I I I'd say basically, so when I was a little boy, I used to just, you know, lay in the sand and wait for the water to come by me. Well, actually, my favorite beach activity would be just um either playing in the water or just sit on the sand, stit sit on the um one of the chairs and enjoy myself and relax. Or I've my dad brought a kite, so maybe flying kites would be good beach activity as well.
SPEAKER_04I like that answer. I really, really do like that answer. Oshama, where are all the places that you have been?
SPEAKER_05I've been to Bahamas, I've been to, I think it's uh Virginia Beach, where the um the hotels are.
SPEAKER_06The boardwalk, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so um I went to when I did that, I got in the pool while my sister and them they went to the beach. I got in the pool, getting in and out of the pool. So it was like it was fun.
SPEAKER_04And I know you've been on a cruise, right? So you've probably been in places you don't even know where you're at, you know what I mean? Because the cruise ship is constantly going and going in the middle. You're like, I don't even know where I'm at, but this is awesome, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_06Yes.
SPEAKER_04So, man. All right, so next question, kind of to follow up that first question. So, what has been your favorite place you've been and what makes that so memorable?
SPEAKER_00I think um the the most favorite place that I've been mostly above all the places I've been is Utah because you know, um I was telling this, as I mentioned at the beginning of the show, um I was telling a nurse who I I I was there's a nurse that has a lot in common that I do, and I was telling her that so there's this church meeting for those of you who are members of my church, we call that general conference, where it's a twice-a year semi-annual global gathering that our church has. It happens first week in April, first week in October. And I was telling her that that's one of the great reasons I like to live out in Utah because is because you know, it's so much better being there in person than it is virtual, because you get when you're there in person, you see and hear stuff that you don't get to hear when you watch it on television or listen to it on the radio. So that's what is a good part of being out in Utah. And also the fact there's a lot of restaurants, a lot of cool places out there that out in Utah that you don't usually see when or get to see when you live out here in RVA.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I know she uh she asked you if you went to this certain place that started in Utah. Oh, I forgot what it was called. Do you remember what it was called? It was like a soda place.
SPEAKER_00You remember that? Um swig soda, I think what it was.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think so. I think so. She was asking you if you've been there. I forgot what you said. Did you go there? I don't think I've been there before. Well, all the listeners, the the PA at the doctor's office said that this Swig soda place is pretty cool. They said they do a bunch of crazy things with soda. So who don't love soda? Yeah, you know what I mean? So Ashama, what has been your favorite place that you've been and what made the trip so memorable?
SPEAKER_05Well, Bahamas. Bahama Mamas is my favorite. Being on a cruise ship, carnival sunshine, oh my god, is amazing. Like all you can eat. Breakfast, then they quit breakfast at a certain time, then they do the lunch, and then about like eight o'clock, seven o'clock, they have that all you can eat. Oh my god. Then the ice cream from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Yo, it's amazing. So it's a party ship. If y'all ain't never been to Bahamas, I need to go get on that cruise ship and party. That's that's the party cruise ship. It's amazing.
SPEAKER_04Me, me and my wife, our last vacation, we actually went to a Bahamas cruise trip, uh cruise, and I mean it was awesome. We uh we went Royal Caribbean, which was cool because they have the the private island. I forgot what it's called, but I mean it was it was awesome. But the best part about the cruise, the food. Yeah. I mean, let's be real, the food like the first thing we did when we got on there, we went to the buffet, and dude, I yeah, I had a burger, chicken tenders, pizza, fries, everything. I was like, you know what? I'm making I'm getting the most out of my money.
SPEAKER_05When I first got on the cruise, I went to the guys' burger.
SPEAKER_07Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_05Yes, and I always get the same number. That's what I first got on. Let's go eat. All right, are we going to guys restaurant?
SPEAKER_04And the best part too is the the the dining hall at nighttime when you when everyone has a reservation and you go there and they have really fancy foods and really good food, and you're not limited, right? If there's filet mignon plus some pasta and you want both, hey, guess what? You can order both. And oh, it's so cool. It's so cool. Man, I could talk about that all day.
SPEAKER_05Right, me too.
SPEAKER_04All right, Robbie, next question. Everybody has an oh crap traveling moment. Do you have any traveling moments that haven't gone as planned?
SPEAKER_00I sure do. I mean, so my dad and my two brothers and I uh a few years ago, probably in and this was in 2017, we were going out to Wyoming to visit my family and to visit my grandmother, who, as I've mentioned before to you, or mentioned other people, she's 94 years of age. Wow. And so um we were going, we were about to get on the plane to leave, and as we were about to get on the plane ready to leave, having passed security checks and all that sort of stuff, I realized one thing, and that was I did pack my laptop, but you know what? I forgot to pick it up when I was at that security screen. I know. So I asked my dad, I said to him, I think I accidentally left it there. Can can you basically go back and get it? And he said, We'll see. And or maybe or what he did in this case and said we could and in what he did in this case since we sh since we couldn't go back, was he actually called my mom and my mom had to go all the way to the airport to come get it. And just like that, I left it in Richmond. It didn't go with me to Wyoming, but that was one time I made a mistake and I actually forgot something that I should have brought with me or picked up when I was up at security.
SPEAKER_04So I'll I'll ask you this. Do you I know you love your laptop, I know you love being on the laptop, but do you regret your decision? Or like do you wish you could go back and get your laptop, or do you think you had maybe a little more fun without it because you were able to maybe focus on other things that you might not have originally focused on?
SPEAKER_00Well, you know, I think that is a good question. And I think basically as my I think that the answer is I don't think I regretted it because my mom said that basically when you have your laptop with you, it causes a lot of problems, not just for me, but for the whole family. And it happened, there was a time that happened once where I got angry and I started to explode because I had my laptop, and that's where she got to the point where bringing your laptop wasn't really a good thing for you. So I think to answer your question, I think I did just fine without it. I did everything my dad did and all my other family members did, and I just engaged in conversation while without a laptop and spent more time with family. That's what family and that's what I did too.
SPEAKER_04I love that. I absolutely love that. Great answer. Oshama, everybody has an oh crap traveling moment. Do you have any traveling moments that didn't go as planned?
SPEAKER_05Yes. Last year when we went on the cruise, uh, we were coming back. We went through hurricane seasons.
SPEAKER_04Oh no. Yeah, you booked a cruise during hurricane season. Oh, hurricane season.
SPEAKER_05So on our way back, uh, we was on the first floor. Yeah. Like when you be on the first floor, you could feel the water up under the cruise. So we was like rocking side to side. I was like, Lord, please just let us get home safely. This was on our way back home. And we rocking back and forth, and I'm sitting up there doing karaoke. I'm trying to, and the man was like, Hold on to the mic, the um the mic stand. I was like, man, this is not helping. Lord, please let me be still while I'm doing it because we was rocking back and forth because of the water. I was like, Lord, and so that's what that was. And it's like, if we kept rocking back and forth, people that was in bed would have got rolled out of bed. So yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'll tell you this. So I didn't even go on hurricane season, and and the cruise was actually I I I remember the first cruise I went on. I thought I was gonna get motion sick, and I didn't, like it really wasn't that bad. However, I do remember one morning, like when I went to pee, like to use the bathroom, and I saw the like you don't realize the ship's moving, but then you look at the water and it's going back and forth, and then you're like, holy crap, it is moving. And right that was the first time I was like, Holy crap, I'm moving, you know? So, all right. Next question, Robbie, have you ever tried something new while traveling?
SPEAKER_00Well, that is a really interesting question, and and and to be honest with you, um I don't think there's anything that I've tried that was new. I mean, other than to say I've I've been to new places, like new restaurants that I've never been to, or tried some new food like like Chinese or or any type of stuff. But to be honest, I don't think I've uh tried anything new other than those things.
SPEAKER_04Um Ashamu. Have you ever tried something new while traveling?
SPEAKER_05Yes. Um what we what I tried new was we went to um I think it's called Sunrise um restaurant that was on the cruise ship.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05So we had gotten renovations for about eight o'clock, and we we went there, we ate free, and we tried um I tried a lot of new stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And it was amazing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, so there's gotta be some sort of activity or something you did on the cruise ship.
SPEAKER_05I did on the cruise ship. Like I said, I did do karaoke every day about 6 p.m. Mm-hmm. And um just walk around and shopping.
SPEAKER_04You ain't do the belly flop competition? Yeah, no, yeah, no, I always dude, I always get scared. I see people doing that. I'm like, I know that hurts.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and plus it kept uh raining on and off while we was also on the cruise. So basically we had to do our running. So we had our exercises by running into the elevator to get to the in from the um outside to get to the inside to get the well.
SPEAKER_04I'll tell you this. Uh uh, when I was on the cruise ship, and I mean I played plenty of pickleball before, but uh I was scrolling on the activity list for the day. I saw they had a pickleball contest. So I went up there and I partnered with this dude from he's from a different country, but he was a dog at pickleball. And we made it all the way to the championship, but we lost.
SPEAKER_06Wow.
SPEAKER_04But you know what? I was proud of ourselves. Oh, it was so fun. It was so fun. But pickleball on a cruise ship, that was new for me. That was fun. That was really fun.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, you know what else I did new? Um but I haven't seen before. Um, they did the charms last year. So they got the break, the bracelet, and all we had to do was pray for um pay for the charms. So I filled the um the bracelet up with charms, and I brought it home f for um Janet. Oh, that's cool. So Janet has the charms. So that was something though that they did on the cross.
SPEAKER_04That's cool. That's really, really cool. All right, last question. Let's have fun with it. Use your imagination, right? Let's get creative. So, tomorrow, right? You have an unlimited budget. You have unlimited money, right? Right. You can go anywhere in the world. Robbie, where are you going? What's your dream vacation?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that question, you know, was asked me many years ago when I was in middle school when we were interviewing each other. Like, if there were any place in the world you want to go, where would you go? And I'd say, and my answer was China, but you know what I'd say? Not only I want to go to China as a place, not only China would be a good place of where I would want to go if I were to go anywhere in the world, it could be any foreign country. My my mom and my sister, for example, are getting ready to leave or about to leave today for Italy. And so I was thinking to myself, well, I said to my mom, I wish I could go with you guys. I mean, because basically they have all good food. I've tried a lot of Italian food, it's super good. But I just would love also to have the opportunity to explore a lot of foreign countries. And I wish I could go with them or explore foreign country, but there are a lot of barriers. Like, for instance, I don't have a passport, you know, I could lose things all the time. But going to China plus any foreign country would be my best answer for where I would want to go if it were anywhere in the world and if I had unlimited money.
SPEAKER_04Well, I was actually talking to your mom yesterday, and I told her I'm very, very jealous of her. So I mean, not going to Italy. That's like that's like my dream. Wow, that's like me and Katie's dream. So we're gonna we're gonna get to Italy one day, and Robbie, you would love Italy. You know why? Why you love Italian food? Can you imagine eating pizza in Italy? Holy crap, pasta in Italy? Yeah, right. The best pizza in the world, it always says ingredients imported from Italy.
SPEAKER_06Right.
SPEAKER_04Is Italy the birthplace of pizza? I would assume so if it's Italian food, right? Right, dude. Right. You know what scares me about going to Italy? Right. You always gain so much weight on vacation, or at least I do, because I love to eat. If I go to Italy, I'm gaining at least 20 pounds. At least, because I'm eating pizza and pasta every night. You know what I mean? Yeah. So a shaman, unlimited money, unlimited budget, dream vacation. Where are you going?
SPEAKER_05You know what? I want to go to Caribbean. Yeah. I want to go to Caribbean and see what Caribbean is all about and see what people do in Caribbean.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, that's a good answer.
SPEAKER_05Caribbean cruise.
SPEAKER_04Well, I mean, what part of the Caribbean? There's like I mean, there's a wide variety, you know, like I mean, there's like Barbados and Turks and Caicos, and you just you just want to be in the Caribbean, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and dude, I love that. Honest to God, like I I've been the, I mean, I've been to a couple places and they're not too far off from each other, right? You got your white sandy beaches, you got your clear water. At the end of the day, it's a lot better than here. Right. It's a lot better than Virginia. So I dude, I agree with you. That I I I agree. So my wife, she's very like, all right, let's travel to Italy. Let's go to China. Like, let's go somewhere cool, cultural. I'm the opposite. Give me a white sandy beach. Give me a nice beverage in my hand. And I'm chilling.
SPEAKER_05I really want to be like my sister because my sister travels a lot. My sister being to Mexico. My sister, yeah. My sister and they travel a lot. So I want to be like them. I want to, you know, start traveling.
SPEAKER_04Well, the coolest place ever. I don't know if your sister's been here, but me and my wife went to Barbados. That was awesome. You know who's from Barbados?
SPEAKER_06Uh-uh.
SPEAKER_04Rihanna.
SPEAKER_06Oh. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It was cool. It was really, really cool. We went to a sandals resort and it was so fun. And talk about the food. Like it's just like the cruise ship where you have unlimited food, but they have like nine different restaurants. Or actually, I think it was like 20 different restaurants, but you just go to the restaurant, you order whatever you want for free. Wow. Yeah, so you can just order like the whole menu at all these restaurants. It's so good. It's so good. So yes, cruises are fun, but if you go on like an inclusive trip to like the Caribbean, so awesome. So awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right. Well, guys, that wraps us up. Closing statement. Robbie, what you got?
SPEAKER_00Well, my closing statement is simply, you know, we had a really great time today talking about vacation. If I were to give simple advice about this, I'd say anytime you want to go on a vacation. I wouldn't just say if you have a job, let your boss know, because that's what I do. Anytime I go somewhere or anytime I know for sure that I'm going to be out of town or on vacation, I let my boss know. I did that last time when I was when I realized I was going to be in Utah in April. So give them as much notice as possible. Also, um, if you're planning a trip, you never know how not only plane tickets, but you never know how expensive it can be, how expensive it could be to go on a trip. Like you look at plane tickets from Delta, and you know they cost way more money than I can afford on my car, or sometimes even way more money than I have on my budget. So my counsel and my advice to you is simply this if you ever plan a trip, let and know when you're gonna be gone on a trip, let your boss know. And if you're planning a trip, make sure that you can afford it and that you have the money to do it, even if you're planning it, even if you're booking a hotel, etc. Or even just taking a plane or train, make sure it's something you can afford.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's the thing too, and they are expensive. Let's be real, they're really expensive. So plan in advance, you know what I mean? So if you're like, hey, next year I want to go this, start saving right now. Yeah, you know what I mean. Just have a vacation jar. That's what a lot of people do, like a little side vacation jar.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Kind of put some extra money in there and just kind of let it build. So a shaman closing statement.
SPEAKER_05My closing statement is if you're gonna go on vacation, make sure you have fun.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Oh, have fun.
SPEAKER_05F-U-N, fun, yes, because you don't want to go on a vacation and be bored. Wherever you go, make sure you have some fun. If you're going on a cruise, man, have fun.
SPEAKER_04Yes, 100%.
SPEAKER_05If you party in, party. Get on a cruise that you're gonna have fun on, that you're gonna party, and you know, just have fun. That's all it is. Get in the pool, get in the hot tub, eat all you want. Yes, not not till you get sick, though.
SPEAKER_04Nah, till you get sick. You pay for that food, enjoy that food.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you you pay for everything there's that um you go for the trip for. So basically, I will advise everybody to go on a cruise.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. It's so fun.
SPEAKER_05Just get out of the country. Just get out of the country and you know, Bahamas, Caribbean, wherever that you want to go. Take a cruise. Yes. Because that's the most funnest thing to do is to take a cruise and you have fun.
SPEAKER_04I second Ashama. Like, I everything you just said, I completely agree. My advice to everybody take the trip. Everyone always just sits there and they're like, I want to get away, I want to do this, and they just wait and they push it off and they push it off. Take the trip. You live once. You know what I mean? You live once, and a perfect way of getting away is a cruise. It is amazing, and it's really not that expensive. Like, it's honestly like it's pretty cheap. Yeah, if you really think about all the food, the bedding, like the room, like it's really not that expensive.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because you once you pay for the trip, you're paying for everything.
SPEAKER_04That's what I'm saying. So, I mean, I um a cruise is like a fraction of the cost as like uh uh all inclusive resort. And honestly, you get the same things, yeah. You know what I mean? You get the exact same thing. So that's my advice. Take that trip because I'm telling you, like, I I've been the guy where it's like, I'm gonna push us off, we'll go another time, we'll go another time, push us off. But then when you go, like it's just like you feel alive, like you know what I mean. It's just like there's something about being on vacation. You're like, man, this is this is awesome.
SPEAKER_05Like, because when you've been in a hotel, you've been in a hotel, yeah. But it's different being in a hotel on water.
SPEAKER_04That's what I'm saying. Yes, I'm telling you, it's amazing. So, well, guys, that I mean that wraps up our show. And hey, we had a crazy morning, but hey, I feel better already.
SPEAKER_05So I do too.
SPEAKER_04We we appreciate all the listeners, we appreciate you making it this far, and we appreciate 175 five-star reviews on Spotify. Yes, let's go. No, that that man, that's awesome. I'm uh I'm so grateful for listeners. I'm so grateful for Oshama and Robbie, and yes, I'm just grateful. I'm just grateful. So I think we're done. I think that wraps us up.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_04So from everyone from inside our minds, we hope you have a great week. Have a great week.
