Welcome to Two Hypnotherapists Talking with me, Denise Biller-Mejia, in Delaware, USA. (0:06) And me, Les Roberts, in St Helens, United Kingdom. (0:10) This weekly podcast is for anyone and everyone who would like to know more about the fascinating (0:14) world of hypnosis and the benefits that it offers.I'm a clinical hypnotherapist and (0:22) specialist in working with children. And I'm a retired medical doctor (0:26) and consultant hypnotist. We are Two Hypnotherapists Talking.(0:33) So, let's get on with the episode. (0:37) Episode three. Hello again.(0:39) Episode three already. I know, it'll be nine before we blink. (0:44) Anyway, my dear, today we're going to talk about just you and me, because you and me (0:48) are who's on the call.It was a great call last week with Melanie. It's very nice of her to come (0:53) on. Last time we spoke, we talked about your business. So, can I be a little bit selfish (0:59) and say, let's talk about mine for a minute. That's not being selfish at all, of course. (1:03) I've got my, all of my marketing work is now, for June, is pushing towards something.I haven't (1:14) decided the actual date, but before the end of June, I will do a webinar on hypnosis and pain. (1:19) Not to teach hypnotists, although they're welcome to join me, but to talk to the general public (1:26) about whether pain is really useful. And pain can be useful, but hypnosis is really useful (1:33) for getting rid of it.That's the idea. Yeah. And it's really funny, isn't it? It's been in (1:43) the public arena since the early 1800s.Actually, the late 1700s, but early 1800s is when they (1:54) labeled it hypnosis. That's when it got the name. And it has been, it's been this sort of, (2:00) we've talked about hypnosis for 10 years and then it'll go away.It just disappears for another 20. (2:05) Then it comes back again and disappears again. It is having a bit of a time, I think.Maybe the (2:10) internet is part of that, but I am constantly annoyed at how little I knew about it when I was (2:19) a doctor. I'm amazed that I wasn't taught in medical school, particularly since both of our, (2:25) both English and American health associations, for doctors, said it should be taught in medical (2:32) school. Yeah, I totally agree.I think it should. I think also, I think our local, (2:39) like general practitioners, our doctors need to be aware that there is other alternatives out there (2:47) than what we want. So I know that you're going to talk about pain, which I will be quiet in a (2:53) minute and let you talk about. But I do think when you go to our GPs, when you go to our local (3:02) doctors and you, you're not quite sure, you know, of like, why, why you feel the way you feel? (3:08) Is it anxiety? Is it pain? Is it lack of sleep? Is it, you know, all of the things, not one of them. (3:15) And I mean, not one of them, in my experience, thinks of hypnosis as a first call. They think, (3:24) I don't mind it not being the first call, because there's a lot of legal and medical (3:29) legal things that are going on.Well, at least by the second or third time, (3:34) yeah. And you're writing yet another pain prescription, which you also hoping works, (3:39) but you know, everybody reacts to drugs and to hypnosis differently. Yeah, different types of (3:46) hypnosis work for different people. So you need to find somebody that you're comfortable chatting (3:52) with. And that, you know, you feel like a simpatico with the hypnotist, because you're (3:58) going to be working together to find those things that really speak to your subconscious. (4:03) Yeah.Get rid of the pain. Yeah. I've just picked a client, a lady for six sessions. And she was, (4:15) she went to her doctors and her doctor said, why don't we try hypnosis? (4:22) Had you spoken to the doctor? How did that person? Why is he so different from the other 99%? (4:28) No, I haven't spoken to him yet or her. But however, I have got permission to (4:36) write to the doctor afterwards when we finished her sessions. (4:40) It's interesting how different I think it's because I'm a doctor myself originally.(4:44) Yeah, but I it's a it's mandatory that I can communicate with the doctor. Yeah, they often (4:51) don't call me back. But I get to at least say, do you have any objections? Do you realize that (4:57) XYZ problem? But when I then the opportunity to tell me other things about the patient that they (5:03) may not have told me? Yeah, because yeah, definitely. And I know a few few a few minutes (5:10) ago, I don't want to think that I'm contradicting myself. And I know a few minutes ago, I said that (5:15) I have never had a referral from a doctor. This is wasn't a referral to me.This was just a referral. (5:23) The object Google hypnosis. Yeah.Yeah, she is she hyper local? She like (5:32) she's about three, four miles away from me. So yeah, she's very nice. Yeah.Yeah. Which is great. (5:38) May I ask what kind of pain she's dealing with? (5:41) She has been in a couple of RTAs.And she's just suffers with with this pain (5:49) constantly. traffic accident, I'm assuming. Yeah, our acronyms are different than yours.(5:54) Oh, sorry. Yeah. accident. And she's struggling with with pain. But this lovely lady is also got (6:05) fibromyalgia. Yeah, she's lovely. We're enjoying. We're enjoying the session. She's she's really (6:12) lovely. So well, if anybody listens to last week's episode where we were talking to Melanie McCall, (6:18) who I've currently I'm currently using her system. She's she's she and her husband Sean have built (6:26) out a great system where the website and all the things that you need to have a business all (6:31) mesh. It's in one place. She was the reason for that. That is the impetus for me to get (6:38) super organized for a change instead of this fake organized. And all of my marketing tools (6:46) this month, meaning June, because right, is to have the person with chronic pain, hear about (6:58) hypnosis.Yeah, I truly don't mind if you don't come to me, but please look into it for your for (7:04) your pain. So I'm hoping that the audience that will come to the webinar will be a mixture of (7:11) patients. Yeah, but we've we've had this conversation before, Denise, if you remember from (7:17) season eight, where I told you when I used to work for our National Health Service, there was (7:25) a department called MSK, which is musculoskeletal. One of their managers actually said to me, (7:34) because it is when I was training to be an NLP practitioner. And one of their managers said to (7:39) me, I wish that you could get involved with the the clients, because there's a lot of patients, (7:46) you call them as a lot of patients that come in that have psychosomatic pain. (7:52) It makes sense, doesn't it really make sense. And it's not all it isn't necessarily that (8:00) psychosomatic pain, because we know it also works in the acute phase as well. People can have whole (8:08) big time operations under hypnosis, not recommended for everybody. It is for people who can't use (8:15) standard anesthesia. But it is amazing. And for those people who have experienced it, (8:23) you can't understand why the rest of the world doesn't know. I don't know whether we exactly all (8:29) the TV shows I've ever seen this one recently, I'm not saying answer anymore. They've always got (8:34) that sort of boom part on instead of just playing. It's just a technique that will make life easier (8:42) for you. Go and talk to a hypnotist find out.I don't know a hypnotist at all. He doesn't do a (8:48) free consultation. That's not true.I do know a couple that charge and that money is put towards (8:53) your first session. But yeah, most don't charge most I don't charge you. I don't.I don't. It's (8:59) usually we just if the only thing our business was doing was educating people on hypnosis, (9:06) we'd be happy. We are happier if we can pay the rent as well. But the important thing is to get (9:12) the word out there. It is this really good. And especially like you said, what what you're working (9:18) on it with pain with you know, with pain relief. It's really, really important because it takes (9:23) over your life, doesn't it? Yeah, exactly. It becomes everything you wake up and you think, (9:30) am I awake? I must be awake because I can feel it. You know, the pain's there right from the get go.(9:36) Yeah. Yeah, it's not good, is it? But I think I think if we keep ringing the bell and keep, (9:42) you know, banging our drums and everything, I think eventually some of it is going to start (9:47) trickling through. And I do think because we're getting more organized, the internet is a wonderful (9:52) thing.Yeah, real gift from God. We we can communicate with you. We spoke to Melanie in (9:58) Florida, we're going to be speaking to other people in England and other farther flung people. And (10:05) hypnotists themselves aren't working in a little silo anymore. We're able to go to meetings virtually (10:11) instead of having to find the money to fly to Australia, which is great, because now I know, (10:17) probably a few thousand hypnotists. Yeah. And where I could name, if I really force myself, (10:24) I could name a hundred. But people you recognize or subjects, you know, (10:30) yeah, my mind, I know, I know him,

SPEAKER_02Definitely. And I know a few a few minutes ago, I don't want to think that I'm contradicting myself, and I know a few minutes ago I said that I have never had a referral from a doctor. This is wasn't a referral to me, this was just a referral Google hypnosis. Yeah.

And where I could name if I really forced myself, I could name a hundred. People who recognize or subjects, you know. Yeah, my my mind, I know I know him. Russo, the German. Oh, Giancarlo Russo, yeah, we talked about it. Yes, we got to him last week. Yeah, yeah. I came across him in another conference again, you know, and oh gosh, I wish I was stumbling in Britain, I would go to Italy so fast. What to see what his setup is. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I'd I'd go to Italy anyway, regardless, because I love Italy. That's my that's my go-to place. I absolutely love Italy. Absolutely do. The food, the wine, the people, everything, the whole thing about it, whole caboodle. I absolutely love it. But yeah, I met him as we we talked about, I met him in in Antwerp, and he he was, I didn't know that he was a physiotherapist either. So he's a physiotherapist as well as a hypnotherapist. But I've been watching some of his videos, and he's been he, I'm sure I don't know whether he's a pediatric or whether he he's he deals with children as well. I don't know whether he's solely pediatric or whether he's with adults.
SPEAKER_00I know, I only know him through his work with adults.
SPEAKER_02Um I think right, okay. So he's not just uh a PD.
SPEAKER_00But I mean he's uh he's obviously you know, he's got a PhD in it. He's not Oh yeah, he's a doctor. He's done a lot of work and he does he's training as a doctor, so that's yeah, yeah, it's it's it's just spreading the word, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Like you said, it's spreading the word and letting people know that you know that there is an alternative out there, and this alternative helps and it's not that was the original blurb that Martin and I had on.
SPEAKER_00It's this is we're gonna talk about hypnosis, no woo-woo allowed.
SPEAKER_02But people still do think that you know it's voodoo Jedi, you know, stuff, and it's not, it can have magical, fantastic, you know, results, but it's just it's a science, a science that has been here for hundreds and hundreds and thousands of years, yeah, yeah, and it's just something that is non-invasive and it gets very, very quick results. I tell you what, I did see on social media this week, somebody saying, why is hypnosis or hypnotherapy, why is it so expensive? Why is it so expensive in comparison to say counselling or CBT or I think you have to look at the the whole yeah, you know, yes, we will say this is how much it is for two to three sessions.
SPEAKER_00Many of us, depending on what the issue is, will say this much, and you keep coming to me until we get this licked. Yeah. Usually you know when you when you meet someone, you know if they're gonna be two or three sessions for most things we've come across before. Occasionally it's a black hole and you're not quite sure what you want, what's gonna happen. Whereas for the most the vast majority of people that I work with come to me for two sessions and that's it. Right. So it's yes, it's expensive for two sessions, but you're saving all the aggravation of having to go to something for an additional four weeks.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, yeah. The one of the classic examples that I had was a gentleman that went for 42 or 44 CBT sessions, and the therapist just held their hands up and said, I'm sorry, I can't help you anymore.
SPEAKER_00That's honest of them.
SPEAKER_02And he came to four sessions he had with me. That was it.
SPEAKER_00It was done, done deal.
SPEAKER_02And yes, we do charge more, but we charge more. We don't charge we don't charge per hour, we don't put charge per session, do we?
SPEAKER_00We charge as a package, and we the package includes the actual session, the pre-talk, the the actual session, the follow-up, the audio you're gonna listen to in between. Yeah, and as many calls as you need to make. I I can't say my phone's not gonna be busy when you call, but you can leave a message and I will call you back.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and that that's exactly this the sort of thing that that I say as well. But going back to what you what you're working on as in pain, what sort of pain relief will you be helping for? What what sort of ailment?
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm not gonna be treating anybody. This is a call about it, yeah. Um, but it is people with chronic pain conditions, like the lady with fibromyalgia. This is this is the kind of client that I would expect to look for. The other thing is the the somebody's been in an accident and they have you expect that you break a bone, you expect it's gonna hurt for a bit. But once it's healed, you expect it to shut up. And I'm telling you all the time. It's for those people whose pain doesn't get better when in the condition that the pain brought it to their attention.
SPEAKER_02You mentioned before about what you uh that how you work as you talk to their doctor for first go down.
SPEAKER_00Before they're actually a patient, yeah, client, they have some general information that will work to sign off on, and they give me a physical and then permission to speak to their doctor. I just write to the doctor and say, Do you have any reason that you might think that hypnosis is a problem? And if that's the case, please talk to me. And or are you okay with that? And then I send them a follow-up afterwards to say, so-and-so came to me, we got rid of the problem in X amount of time. Do let me know if there's anybody else you might like me to see.
SPEAKER_02Can I ask you then, for the sake of our listeners or anybody that doesn't understand why you do that? Why do you contact the doctor? Why do you contact their doctor to ask, is it okay?
SPEAKER_00It's because there are a few conditions where doing it distance is not a good idea. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. Yeah. I've had a few patients with it, a few clients with this, oh how it's that hard. A few patients, clients who have disclosed that so I know what I'm getting into, so I can then write to the doctor and say, I know they've got blah blah blah blah blah. But for the most part, if somebody is schizophrenic or well-controlled on medication, they probably don't want to be telling everybody. I need to know. Of course, yeah. No, I can be with you, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and of course, the other thing is so doctors know it works, so they hear about it. Exactly, exactly. Yeah, no, I totally agree with you because you you've do we we've got to be very careful, haven't we? We've got to protect ourselves as well as as our clients, really, haven't we? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I have in the case of somebody who I find out through their doctor or through them, yeah, that they have schizophrenia or bicolar disorder, or when if the doctor has reservations about working online, I would send them to somebody locally there. Yes, yeah, yeah. And that's just that's part of the front end of work that we do. Yeah, I'd be happy to talk to you about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I've worked with a lady who had epilepsy, but it was controlled, medically controlled, and I wrote to her doctor beforehand just to make sure. But one thing I did do is I asked her, should she have an episode? What was I to do?
SPEAKER_00Well, it's one of the things that you don't want anybody else in the room necessarily. No, unless it's a kid, it's fake me. But it it is important that there's somebody else nearby. You know, what is the house phone number so I can call and tell the person you're having a seizure in front of my eyes and I can't do anything. That's that's why I don't want I don't want to have to watch somebody when I cannot physically do anything about it. No, it wouldn't be. It's not that it's not that hypnosis causes seizures. It is that very many seizures will come as you're falling into sleep and as you're coming out, and that's right where hypnosis works. And so there is a possibility.
SPEAKER_02But for the sake of the listeners, that doesn't mean to say that anybody with epilepsy couldn't be hypnotized.
SPEAKER_00No, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. You just you want to hypnosis. Who would say they just have to be very careful who they choose as their hypnotist, really, don't they? Sure that they're covering all angles just in case.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and and the thing is that hypnosis is, in my opinion, a very important special thing that they don't consider that here. But I, you know, we are bound by the same confidentiality rules under a doctor. We aren't going to be walking down to the market and announcing that you have XYZ disease. That's not the point. The point is this is a really safe modality, and we want all the other parts of your life to be equally safe. Yes.
SPEAKER_02I I found as as I've gone on in my practice that every so often I change my intake form and I add little bits and pieces to it because you think, oh, I need to put that in. Like you said, if if you work online, you need to be able to have access to an emergency contact just in case, and even in person as well. But also, you just have to be careful about what medication they're on, and and it's not that you need to have a PhD to work out, you know, what the medication is, the internet. So I use it to you to our benefits, really. Be a little bit careful about which site you're using source of information. There are some strange ones out there. There there is, but we just have to be careful, don't we? We just have to be really, really careful.
SPEAKER_00Well, the thing is, hypnotists, when they say your doctor needs to know, we really mean it. Unlike in all the diets that stay at the bottom in the tiny, tiny writing. You know, talk to your doctor. Nobody ever does. Yes, you should talk to your doctor about these things. Yeah, we should. Is he going to have time to talk to me? How much money will I have to pay to go and sit and talk to him? Yeah. Usually you can shoot off an email these days and emails. How wonderful communication. I ran out of such and such, but I have another script, please.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we can't we can't do that now where we are. We have to re- Oh, really?
SPEAKER_00Oh no, no, we don't all I mean we would we can communicate with the doctor's office. I'm I'm running out of XYZ. Can you please put it again? I have one of my meds, one of my meds has gone for B, three months supply. It's of all the drugs, it's been around for ages. I mean, years, decades, and all of a sudden the health, uh, the insurance company wants it to be a monthly med. So I'm gonna pick it up every month, which means I'm run out of shrips quite quickly.
SPEAKER_02So you going back to to what you're doing, what what's the what's the what's the your objective? What's the end result?
SPEAKER_00My objective is a publicity to have a greater understanding of the utility of hypnosis. Okay, yeah. Specifically, I'll be speaking about pain conditions and how and how it helps with that. It's really just a general information. And because my business has been in the daughters, it's been a bad year for me and had that almost back in 24 and it just dwindled. And I really need to be a bit more intentional about things, which is how Melanie's helping.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. And also people people don't appreciate that how when when you're self employed and and there's just you, when you're a one man band or you know, you you're a tiny company. Out, you're spinning so many plates, aren't you? In order to make sure that you know you you've seen and you heard and and people know of you. I've stayed off LinkedIn.
SPEAKER_00You don't forget to renew your insurance. Yeah, yeah. Little things.
SPEAKER_02But I've uh I've stayed off LinkedIn for uh I'd say a couple of weeks really. I I've posted sporadic posts every so often, but I used to post, you know, bang, bang, bang all the time. And I haven't, and I have noticed that when I do post now, I there's not many people communicate with me. There's not many people because people will drop off very, very quickly if you're not in it every single day.
SPEAKER_00LinkedIn is running in danger of people sort of turning into Facebook and people are having arguments on things. It's not intended to be there. Yeah, um the majority of my connections in Toronto 1500 are physicians through the very fit physician organizations I've been involved with. Yeah. So again, everything is my my LinkedIn, my Facebook, my Pinterest stuff will be pushing this. Yeah. Hypnosis works for pain for the next month, and then I'll choose something else to talk about for a while. It really is. Yeah, yeah. It's I think it's worth it because the stuff stays around. It's not really social media. It's sort of social media, but it's not exactly social media. Yeah, it's more of a search engine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I might have a look at that when I when I have time.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02At this moment in time, it's chaos here.
SPEAKER_00You need a hypnosis session for how to be organized and make time in your day. Yeah, I just I think I just you have all these you have you have children and grandchildren. You have things that happen that interrupt your life.
SPEAKER_02I d I do, but do you know what, Denise? My daughter, our youngest daughter, she actually moved out not yesterday, the day before. So as her stuff is leaving, my stuff from work coming in. So it's it's well, it's well timed. But this is the first time in over 30 years that my husband and I thank you. Just us, just us and the dog, and it's fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I speak to my daughter, I speak to my children every day, and we're you know, my grandsons are we're very close, but I tell you what, it's heaven, absolute heaven, it's tidier, it's quieter, you know. It's you go in the fruit, and something isn't missing. Yeah, it's heaven, absolute heaven. Like over here, and while this is while we're recording this, this is what time is it? About 6 30. 1.30 here. It's 6 30 for me. Now, usually it's like what we're having for dinner, let's have this, let's have that, you know. Oh, don't want that, we don't want that, you know, or something. Whereas tonight, we can just please ourselves what we want, and it's uh we're all organized already, and it's it's just nice. And I was talking to my brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws last weekend, and I was saying, we can't wait, we can't wait, you know, to to spend this time together. But trust me, usually, you know, as usual, I never do things properly or I never do things timely. So just just as that Emily's leaving, I've got all this chaos about you know, about moving and uh and you don't have a fully finished extension yet for the but I will do, I will do so have you got an uh you your usual compliment of patience right now? Or is this a slow period so you can always I've slowed it down on purpose because I wanted to take about a week off to make sure, just in case there's any hiccups, however, I have got three of my clients actually. I gave them the option, they could either wait or I would see them, but I did state that I'd have to see them here in in our conservatory, really, and they've agreed and said, Yeah, we'll come along. So, yeah.
SPEAKER_00You have fewer dogs or have you?
SPEAKER_02We've only got one now. We've only got one because Emily's taken uh olive and pepper, so we've just got a bear now. So he's been free, he's been free. Does he feel lonely? He is, he didn't eat yesterday. He was he was like feeling sorry for himself, but he's uh he's cheered up a lot. And I would I took him for a cut before, so he's had a shampoo and and and cut, and he's he looks lovely and because he's wire haired, so um he's he's nice and cool now, you know, for the weather.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, and because it's summer, you'll be able to take him for walks a lot easier. Yes, yes, if you've got a half an hour between twirls, you can do something with a half hour instead of sitting and twiddle your thumbs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it won't take three of us, it usually takes three of us because even though Olive's only little and her sister Pepper's not very big, Peppa's she's uh the both girls are chihuahuas, so that you know, like Pepper is a you know, little chihuahua, whereas Olive is so laid back, you know, she's uh she's almost horizontal if you if you get me. So, but Pepper isn't, so it nobody felt comfortable taking the two dogs together, you know, just in case. So it always took three of us, you know, to take them out. So now I can get my steps in in between uh claims. Perfect, perfect, yeah, yeah, which will help you with your weight journey too. It will, it will. I'm doing uh I'm almost three stone now under, so that's fantastic. Good. Yeah, and I I feel I feel so much better, I really do.
SPEAKER_00You're gonna really love being able to walk down the walk down the garden path to your business. Yeah, your dimples are coming back, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh my all my wrinkles, you can see all my wrinkles there because otherwise it was you know all nice and puffy, whereas now you can see them. So I might have to go and see someone about them, but I'm only joking. We'll see. We'll see. But as far as the the pain is concerned, is that what you want to do when you've done all of this things with melanin?
SPEAKER_00What I what I want to do is have uh a steady uh influx of pain of clients. It is the easy the the simplest thing would be if doctors recognize that it can help them, but they've probably got enough people going in and complaining the pain's still here, doctor. And that I could be when when I first started talking to physicians who help other physicians kick start their practice, I was getting a lot of the oh, just get a couple of doctors sign up, you'll keep you in business. But they don't because they forget about it, they've got other things to think about. And you know, we we're not certainly not recommended on the NHS, even though the NHS says it's fine. And uh top of mind, you don't say top of mind.
SPEAKER_02You don't, you don't it's very similar to what I was talking about about LinkedIn. If you drop off, even if it's just for a week, people very, very quickly forget who you are and forget. Yeah, it's about being consistent, it's about being constant, isn't it? So this afternoon I had half an hour where I was I was having a look at my social media campaign for next week. So I've got all that to to do. So if I get it all done, we start picking up again. But we've got quite a few clients do.
SPEAKER_00I warned you about we have a guest on Monday, right?
SPEAKER_02We do. This is we're flying through these now, aren't we? This is great. Yes, it's good. This is number three. We've already got four and five organized. Yeah, yeah. So this is great. So should we finish? Because we're up to yes, I think we should.
SPEAKER_00We should go off and do things. I've got to get the the the the kickoff piece ready for the radio. So it was really good catching up with you again. We are gonna catch up with each other with our next guest for Friday.
SPEAKER_01We will, yeah, we will enjoy the weather. All right, you take care. Thank you. Bye-bye.
