0:00) Welcome to Two Hypnotherapists Talking with me, Denise Billen-Mejia, here in Delaware, USA. (0:06) And me, Les Roberts in St Helens, United Kingdom. This weekly podcast is for anyone and everyone (0:13) who'd like to know more about the fascinating world of hypnosis and the benefits that it offers.(0:19) I'm a clinical hypnotherapist and specialist in working with children. (0:25) And I'm a retired medical doctor and consultant to hypnosis. (0:30) We are Two Hypnotherapists Talking.(0:33) So let's get on with the episode. (0:36) The nice thing about when it's just you and I, I don't have to introduce you, (0:40) you don't have to introduce me. Everybody knows us.(0:42) I know. (0:43) We were talking before we came on air about what do you want to do for next season? (0:48) We both think that we probably should have a little more direction in where we're going (0:51) when we do this. So I really like the idea of bringing in fears and phobias.(0:58) I agree. (0:59) Those issues, because there's so many, there's so many fears. There's so many phobias. There's (1:04) a lot of different ways that this can manifest itself. And there isn't anybody on the planet (1:09) that hasn't got some little, you know, dark corner somewhere that they don't like to look at. (1:15) Okay, so what are we going to talk about today after the next season? (1:20) What about where we're up to, what we're doing for that, you know, for in the next few months, (1:27) what we're going to be up to? (1:28) Well, you know, I changed my marketing plan.So I'm, I'm, I'm advertising and writing about (1:35) one particular issue for the entire month. So June was all, what was it? (1:44) Pain. (1:45) Pain.Pain. Yes. Chronic pain. And then this month is anxiety, (1:52) stress, and sleep because they tend to be all mish-moshed together. (1:56) Um, and next, I think fear and fear and phobia is a natural one to do. (2:06) Yeah, yeah.Like you said, (2:09) Do you see many people for fear? (2:11) I do. Actually, I've got to tell you about, I've just had a consultation with a young boy (2:19) who has a fear of people sneezing. (2:25) Does he think he'll catch it? Or he just doesn't like the noise? (2:28) We're not quite sure. We've not got there yet, but he doesn't like it. (2:34) Seven. He gets very, very upset.(2:37) Will he run around that room and leave or scream at them? Or what happens? (2:42) I will. Initially, when I got the inquiry from mum, I initially thought, oh, I wonder if it's (2:49) COVID-related. But he was a baby during COVID, so he, you know, he doesn't, he doesn't remember (2:55) COVID at all.(2:56) But you don't have to remember something to be frightened of it. (2:59) No, you don't. But he has this really bad, intense, that's all how I can explain it, (3:09) intense fear of sneezing. And I said to him, what happens if somebody sneezes at school? (3:14) What happens if somebody sneezes at home? So mum said, well, if we want to sneeze, (3:20) we have to go out of the room and hold it as much as you can. It's very hard. (3:26) It makes it worse.(3:28) And if anybody sneezes at school, especially in this weather now, then he really does have (3:38) these overwhelming behaviours where he has to leave the class. (3:44) Oh dear. Does he sneeze himself? Has he had allergies? (3:52) No, he doesn't.No, very, very rarely sneezes himself. I think it goes deeper than that as (4:00) well, because he actually said that it's not just sneezing, it's actually other bodily functions (4:07) that he doesn't like as well. (4:09) Oh dear.(4:11) We will look forward to hearing more about this young man as you find out more. (4:15) Yeah, we'll see. (4:16) When are you starting to see him? (4:18) I'm not quite sure yet. We're just waiting for mum to get back with some dates, but I have (4:24) offered them two sorts of packages. One is hypnosis in an indirect way because he's a child (4:33) and the other one is hypnosis with my version of sleep talk, which is rest and reset. (4:41) Oh, yeah, that would be a good way really.(4:43) Yeah, I think, I think it would probably work. (4:47) I think it really would work for him. (4:50) Does he want it to work? Does he feel like this is my thing, leave me alone? (4:56) No, he does want to change, but this is the delay in whether he's coming back or not, (5:03) because he's not quite sure whether he wants me to help him.So I've just said, (5:09) I've just done a video, sent it to mum and the video is for him and we'll just have to see. (5:15) Just sit there and... (5:16) Oh, well, good luck. (5:17) Yeah, he's very reluctant. He's very scared of change as well. So that doesn't help, (5:25) but we'll just have to see. (5:27) Does he like school? (5:29) He does, he enjoys school, yeah. He's a good achiever, high achiever. (5:34) Do you know whether he developed this before he started school? (5:39) How long has it been a problem? (5:40) Since he's been to school, it's only, it's been about 18 months, two years. (5:45) So it's before, it's after he's been to school. He went to what's called reception, (5:52) not reception, he went to nursery, then reception, then I think he's year two now, (5:57) something like that. So we'll just have to see what happens. Mum knows, (6:01) you know, what I'm capable of doing and I came highly recommended by somebody else.(6:06) So we'll just have to see. (6:09) Yeah, well, good luck. (6:10) Yeah, yeah. But we do get some weird and wonderful ones, don't we? (6:15) And I think they're nice because they challenge us, don't they? (6:20) Yeah, and I think the other thing is, while we're smiling about this, (6:24) there's a little boy who doesn't like sneezing. (6:25) Oh, no, no, it's no. (6:27) We will not laugh at whatever your thing is.We know that these aren't (6:35) trivial to the people we're suffering from. (6:37) Definitely not. You know, it's just that when you're in, when you're doing this line of work, (6:45) it's just nice.It sounds awful, this, but to me, in my opinion, it's nice to have something (6:51) different. And it's nice to be challenged, really, isn't it? Rather than just... (7:01) Well, good luck with him. (7:02) Yeah, yeah, yeah.So this is a busy... (7:07) Keep us posted, yeah. (7:08) I will, so... (7:10) Are you busy? Is it because kids are out of school now? (7:13) No, they don't finish yet. (7:15) They're just about to leave school.(7:16) I think it's 22nd of July they finish. (7:20) Right, but it's getting things set up for during the holiday. (7:24) So I'm running some wellbeing classes for the children.I'm running them four weeks, (7:31) but I'm only running them on a Monday and a Wednesday mornings. That's all I'm doing because (7:38) for the past couple of years, when I've been running them for the likes of our local council, (7:43) they've really taken over my whole summer. So I'm just going to run them for... (7:49) Yeah, it's nice to have a summer as well.(7:51) 90 minutes a day for four weeks on a Monday and on a Wednesday, and they will get a booklet, (7:58) they will get all kinds of stuff. And there's lots and lots of crafting (8:02) and activities to do as well. So that's nice.(8:04) Oh, what's the age spread? (8:06) Uh, six to 12. I'll accept a five-year-old, but I'll also accept a 13, 14-year-old book. (8:16) Yeah.I probably wouldn't want to be here with a bunch of little kids. (8:20) Exactly. So I just leave it open for parents, you know, at parent's discretion.(8:28) But it's nice for those things that work for groups like weight loss, (8:34) which is a good thing, because everybody in the world has complained about their weight, (8:40) either one direction or the other. So it's not... People aren't shy to talk about that issue. (8:44) No, no.(8:46) You know? And so I think groups are much easier for people to deal with that. (8:50) And we're also been sort of socially accepted with Weight Watchers, not the rest of it. (8:55) So people are surprised to say that you have a group program.(8:58) Yeah. I mean, they are very small groups. They're only eight.(9:02) The maximum eight I'm going to have here, because eight children, I think that'll be enough. (9:08) These are in person, though. These are face-to-face.So I don't want more than (9:14) eight children here at a time. I just think it's going to be bedlam, but it's going to be fun. (9:19) So I really like it.So that's what I'm doing. (9:23) Do you have the seating in the new place? (9:26) Yes, we'll have it there. (9:28) Do you have the seating available? (9:29) Yes, there's lots of seating.(9:30) That is on the floor. (9:31) Yeah, but also we've got room away from it, at the front of it, to put the gazebo. (9:38) So the gazebo can go there as well.(9:40) So we've got plenty of room. Lots and lots of chairs. (9:43) We've got big, long tables. So it'll be good. (9:47) Okay. When you have a client come to you who says, (9:52) I've had backache for the last 20 years, other than saying earlier, (9:58) what's the first thing that you ask them? (10:02) If they've been to the doctors, actually, and what the doctor has said.(10:07) Well, yeah, 20 years, they're better off. (10:09) Yeah, and I would be asking them for, I would actually want to write to the doctor to see (10:18) why they've still got this pain. So, and go from there, really.(10:24) And find out what else they've done, because it's interesting, you can get through a lot of things. (10:28) I've actually got a lovely lady who's coming to see me for pain. (10:32) But the pain that she's struggling with is from some road traffic accidents.
Welcome to two next thirties talking with me today film and don't wear you with today.
SPEAKER_01And me, let's drop it, and say hello.
SPEAKER_00Speaking of casting for anyone and everyone who likes to know more about the fascinating world. And the benefits of the doctor.

SPEAKER_00He gets very, very run around running around the room and leave or scream at them, or what happens?
SPEAKER_01I well initially, when I got the inquiry from mum, I initially thought, oh, and if it's COVID related, but he was a baby during COVID, so he, you know, he doesn't he doesn't remember COVID at all. No, they don't finish yet. I think it's 22nd July, they finished.
SPEAKER_00Right, but it's just getting things set up for the during the holiday.

SPEAKER_00What when you have a client come to you who says, I've had backache for the last 20 years. Other than saying earlier, what's the first thing that you ask them?
SPEAKER_01If they've been to the doctors, actually, and what the doctor has said Well, yeah, 20 years they're better off. Yeah, and I would yeah, and I would be asking them for I would actually want to write to the doctor to see you know why they've still got this pain. So and go from there, really.
SPEAKER_00So find out what else they've done because it's a lot of things.
SPEAKER_01I've actually got a a lovely lady who's coming to see me for pain, but the pain that she's struggling with is from some road traffic accidents. So it's like an old pain, really.
SPEAKER_00Did she get seriously hurt in the accident? Or uh just the residual tension thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she she's got she she's had a few issues with the back and a few issues with the legs and everything, but now years after it's a combination of everything that's accumulated. So she's not being older. Yeah, she's got clearance from a doctor, so uh she's uh she's good to go if you get me. So that that will be nice.
SPEAKER_00Do you get referrals from doctors? I don't get any Do you think even people who've had patients of theirs go through whatever you've done with them and it's worked? You don't even get it, it doesn't occur to them to say no.
SPEAKER_01I've challenged this with a few doctors because every every client that comes through, I will ask them, can I write to their doctor? And it's on my intake form, either yes or no. And I explain what it's for. It's not to give the doctor war and peace over what's happened, it's just to explain that hypnosis or hypnotherapy can be used for blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_00You know, I've asked a few GPs and get some tips if they've got something else they've got about.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I've asked a few GPs why they can't why they won't refer my own GP as well, and their excuses, and I'm sorry, I'm using that terminology excuses, because I do think they are excuses, is we don't know you, so we can't recommend you. So I I go back and I say yes, but I'm registered.
SPEAKER_00How many of the surgeons that you send people to? Exactly. Do you know?
SPEAKER_01Well, my argument with one of the local GPs was well, you refer to a private podiatrist and a private chiropractor. Why can't you refer to me? And he he couldn't answer. I still still write to them. I've had one person.
SPEAKER_00It is it is have that sort of woo-woo that we've got remaining. I've had one person again. Sorry, sorry, stage hypnotists, but really you have given us an awful lot of pain over the years.
SPEAKER_01I've had one person who the the lady that came for me that's come for the pain. She actually was told by her GP to find a hypnotherapist. She asked a GP. Yeah, she asked Have you written to said GP and thanked him? Not yet, I've not finished with it yet. So I she did say, well, what hypnotherapist, and he said, I can't recommend anybody. So that will be going in my letter. That will be going in my letter, and it's just it can be done, it can be done. You know, the the all they need to do.
SPEAKER_00I'm lucky my my general my general doctor and sent me four people. It's mostly it's weight. They get so you get pigeonholes, oh you do weight, oh you do dog bites, oh you do you know, it's it's uh it works for anything it might be going on in your mind.
SPEAKER_01What they what they could do is they could say, well, listen, here is a hypnotherapist that I know some of my patients have been to see her. I can't recommend it, but all I can say is that the results have come back. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I can't hear the dog. Can you not have it right?
SPEAKER_01I I just think it's just I don't know. Sorry, you keep talking while I I just think it's unfair, really, that they can refer to for somebody to go to for counseling, they can refer to chiropractors to podiatrics, but they they not only that, but it's I mean, not all, but a large number of chiropractics are sort of anti-traditional medicine.
SPEAKER_00And we definitely aren't. We think it's supposed to be together.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, it's just it just seems it just seems slightly unfair. But hey-ho, that's the beauty of it. And it what I all I can do is just to keep sending the letters through once that my clients have finished their uh sessions with me, and just hope that one day my husband's just taking the dog in. And hopefully, you know, one day, you know, somewhere some GPs will recognise it. But it in Australia, one of our friends who was in the growth club with us, Nina, Nina has referrals every single week from GPs, not just one GP, quite a few GPs.
SPEAKER_00Do you know how she reached out to the GPs to start?
SPEAKER_01No, I I'll uh no, I'll have to speak to Sheila about it because Sheila knows, Sheila was involved, yeah.
SPEAKER_00She would be a good person to have on the call. Because honestly, most of the people that listen to us were already getting the pissed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but yeah, so Nina, Nina is uh she's a hypnotherapist. She she was in our uh growth club. I don't think I don't know if she's still in. She just started sending things out to the GPs, and then Sheila Granger got involved and and it just escalated from there. And she's doing she's doing absolutely fantastic now. I think one day something something's got to give, hasn't it? Because the state of it at the moment, the state of you know, the mental health and and also you know the GPs. I don't know what yours is like over in the USA, but our GPs since COVID, there's something strange going on with RGPs, you know, because you can't book an appointment. You have to ring up at eight o'clock on the morning and see if they can take you that day. You can't book you can't make an appointment for next week. No, you can't, you can't do it. And I because I said, Well, I'm self-employed, I've got, you know, I've got clients to see. I can't just drop them to come and see the doctor. No, no, you can't. We don't, they're not taking any appointments. And the the medical centre where my GP is, I used to work there as well in the medical centre when I did speech and language, and it used to be packed, it was thriving, it's such a busy, busy, there's a big waiting area, you know, in the atrium at the bottom. Now you go in, there's no hardly anybody there, and you just think, well, what are the GPs doing now?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't know. Because my my I I know they had you know, you have a Wednesdays usually were closed, they were doing office work or playing golf. Yeah, yeah. Fair enough when you work in the weekends. Yeah, fair enough. But you know, it's just strange. But the the big my biggest thing that drives me bonkers is they'll insist on me making an appointment I go, I see them twice a year, basically. One is a a more intense, this is the annual physical, and you set that up, and then why you set something else up for six months from now. Well, I don't know if we're gonna be in the same state six months from now. I'm sure we can set one up. And then a couple of months along, I'll get a message. Well, the doctor's away that week, can you make another appointment? But then, of course, all the other appointments, two months outside of that, are taken up with people having made appointments really.
SPEAKER_01Well, they this happened, this happened through COVID because I don't know, I don't I do I still don't understand what's happened, but it's not just local here, it's nationwide, it's right across England. I I I assume it's right across Scotland and and Wales as well and Northern Ireland, but it's you can't get an appointment unless you phone up and you sit there and you're in a queue.
SPEAKER_00Which really means if you're gonna go that day, cancel everything else, it's because you're actually physically sick right now. Not the all the stuff we're supposed to go to the doctor to prevent the issues.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. So my daughter, she's had a really bad infection where she she's had uh a temperature, a very, very high temperature, 39 point something, very high. Um, and so she phoned our GP up, and the GP sent her to the walk-in centre. So it doesn't matter whether it was contagious, it didn't matter to the GP. It was a case of, well, you need to go to the either to A E or you need to go to the walk-in centre. So she went to the walk-in centre, she's been given antibiotics because she's they said she's got an infection. She's only it's over a week now. She's only yesterday started to feel better. So she's phoned the doctor to make an appointment to see her own GP. Nope. So she could she's Saturday, which is tomorrow.
SPEAKER_00That's the whole point of the GP service to have somebody who knows you and you know them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so Saturday she's going to see an out-of-hours GP somewhere else. So I just wonder if anybody, and if any GPs, local GPs or British GPs come across this, answer the question. I'd like to know what on earth has happened. Why have we gone from where you could ring up and make an appointment for say next Thursday for something?
SPEAKER_00Well, if that's yeah, holidays, you know. I do I need rabies shots to go to XYZ country.
SPEAKER_01Those those things you need to well now what you do is you you would you would see the nurse practitioner. You wouldn't see, I couldn't tell you the last time. I don't go to the doctors that often, but I couldn't tell you the last time I saw my doctor.
SPEAKER_00So most of the officers now have nurse practitioners running interference as well.
SPEAKER_01I should think so, yeah. And I do understand that they don't want the people who you know just uh make an appointment every single week to see the doctor and they go in. I I understand, I totally understand that. But for people who, like my daughter, who wasn't well, yeah, and she couldn't she couldn't go. I don't understand. So if anybody's out there and they can explain it, that would be absolutely fantastic. Strange, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Poke around my doctor groups and see if I can find the break.
SPEAKER_01It would be would be really interesting to find out, and this happened after COVID. This happened through lockdown, which of course nobody could go to the doctors, which is understandable. But once lockdown was lifted, this is how it's been since then.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. My father, who was very typically himself, uh, he was always annoyed to find out that he could tell because he could see her car that the doctor was in on a Wednesday afternoon. She's doing paperwork. You have no idea how much paperwork there is.
SPEAKER_01imagine yeah but it's it's I don't know but yeah we'll I'm sure somebody will explain it to to us one day but it it's just the same with the same with our um with the the dental the dental surgeries nobody could get in to see any dentists if you weren't registered with a dentist you couldn't get in and that's a lot of private yeah I don't know what happened haven't a clue but anyhow it it is what it is I've got to tell you something though Denise what I've been doing so yes I you know how last year I launched my book Nomi's Big Book of Phoenix I have been recording the audio version I know I know so I have to change my voice in order to do Nomi's voice at first I thought shall I get a voice changer you know find an app with a voice voice changer and I thought well that's cheating a little bit isn't it so so what I've done is I have a picture of a four year acting classes I have a I have a a picture that I've downloaded from Google of a four year old child and when I'm talking to the child when I'm doing no me's voice I put the photograph up on my laptop so that I can change my voice so as if I'm talking to a four year old and not talking to an adult. When do you can't wait to get to the adult section and then I can just talk myself I'm only in I've only done a couple of recordings so I'm just gonna and so you're releasing it through the same company did it release no no I'm just gonna I'm gonna put it on my website and people can download it from my website.
SPEAKER_00So I'm gonna do the ebook event it will also appear here at the bottom of the it will once people put it actually up online.
SPEAKER_01But it it's been good fun actually it's been really good fun it's anything that takes you out your comfort zone it's great isn't it you know and I've all have to do now and again and I've been do I've been doing videos all week as well talking to to parents you know our videos so that was uh I think they'll be sick of me I've just got two more days to go I'm doing a seven day video campaign so but it's good fun though isn't it yeah so what's what's in store for you what what are you doing over the summer?
SPEAKER_00Uh we're hoping to go away one of the the son that lives in Flagstaff he's been there for four years he has uh got a bump up title wise uh he's moving to Ohio that will be happening in the next few weeks or probably be and that's only about six and a half hour drive from us which is hugely different it's a little over a hundred miles whereas he's 2,000 miles from us right now. So so they're uh they're both you know grew up in Jersey so we'll be able to see um and her parents will be able to visit and you know he he'll be able to come here for a long weekend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah without an airplane being involved I'm trying to think yeah um we're going we're hoping to go to Oregon next June May June so we're gonna fly to Portland and I think we're gonna drive from Portland to Eugene because I think it's only about two two and a half hours so we're gonna do that. So we've been looking at flights and everything. So you're you're quite far you're on the opposite side Messer side yeah yeah you're not gonna come across about three three thousand miles to come and say hi probably not gonna happen well you may you're welcome if you get yeah if you get detoured by the planes you're welcome yeah so yeah so we've we've been we've been looking at flights I think we have to fly from Manchester to Iceland to Reykjavik and then Reykjavik to Portland and then we could do Portland to Eugene but I think there's a two and a half three hour delay so we might as well yeah or there's a shuffle because I believe there's a shuffle that we can take so we're open to anything so we're we're gonna have a proper look leave it till after Christmas and then have a proper look and um this is a cousin or a it's my I've got two cousins in in eugene but I've got an auntie and an uncle in Eugene as well.
SPEAKER_00My dad's my dad's younger brother well youngest brother he's he's there so they came they come over every couple of years so they they came over last year so they've invited us over so we thought you know what let's do it let's go yeah well that's the same when we go to we only go once because of the who hear's going on over here but Phoenix is the largest city near him at the moment Flagstaff is about two hours away up a mountain so they they fly themselves in and out of Phoenix uh in and out of Flagstaff but most people yeah it's cheaper to go to Phoenix as well you can either get a bus there's lots of buses that'd be good or yeah driving for two hours is nothing in America I I believe so right I believe so so that's I think that's why not so much on the east coast where I am but it'd be nice it'd be nice to see I've never but that's next year you're talking about next year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah it's next year you absolutely have to yeah I've never I've never done it I actually when I was 16 15 16 probably might have been a little bit older my parents offered me to go with them to it was when my uncle and auntie lived in San Jose and they offered me to come over with them and I went oh don't going on holiday with my parents so I know my God did you go to see a therapist about that because I know turn something down like that. Do you know where I went? I went to Salu in Spain instead with my friends and and yes I really enjoyed it but the difference in going on vacation with your parents going on vacation with friends yes okay it's only it's only when when I've got older and I've thought what did I do that for this is my opportunity to come over well let's hope America's still here where you come because things are pretty awkward.
SPEAKER_00None of my sisters are coming in sources over.
SPEAKER_01Well that's that's what I mean we we're gonna have to play it by ear and see what happens first aren't we you know fingers crossed you never know do you so all right so we've devolved again to our usual thing where we kind of forget when we're talking to an audience we have that audience it would be really helpful and probably saving grace for you if you tell us what you'd like us to talk to you about. Yeah also let us know about the GPs as well in in the UK and see what's going on but yes please let us know anything and we can uh we can always add it in can't we and it doesn't really it it does have to be therapy based really doesn't it but it doesn't necessarily have to be the same things.
SPEAKER_00And therapy doesn't mean it's necessarily a medical issue. No yeah I I don't want to go dancing with my husband might be worth therapy but it's not obviously going to be something heavy.
SPEAKER_01It's 90 degrees here so I've got a pan in front relax I'm gonna get some iced tea I'm going to cook now I'm going to cook uh dinner so I know I know perfect weather for pizza somebody else can bring your really cooked food that's a good idea that's a good idea yeah do you have that many pizza shelves in England?
