Snowbound for the Holidays

Trey runs a rustic ski lodge where both he—and the lodge itself—seem to be stuck in the 1990s. When tech and hospitality specialist Cassidy arrives, "opposites attract" is put to the ultimate test.

Filmed in a small town in northern Ontario during the dead of winter, the movie fully embraces its Christmas atmosphere. From the whimsical snow tubing and wish lantern scenes to the tender dance and almost-kiss (Walkman included!), it delivers plenty of heartfelt moments.

Thank you guys. I think she's like just yesterday we hit number 300, and we were all excited, and now uh uh you know we've jumped up to 500, so the show is definitely getting some traction out there. And I kind of looked at, okay, who's new since between 300 and 500 uh to the show? And we've got a a bunch of Hallmark writers, uh Julie Sherman Wolfe, who we had on the podcast. Uh she's uh she's a follower, Ron Oliver, uh Ryan Peckenpah, who wrote Oh Little Christmas Market last week. He actually follows it and he listened to the podcast, he said. So uh thanks for that, Ryan. Uh we've got actors, uh Trevor Lerner and John Love. They they both play Santa's all the time. Uh Trevor Lerner was Santa in the Santa class. John Love, uh in your favor, to kiss before Christmas. He played the Santa there. Uh Vanessa Lenji's, who's actually the lead in the movie we're covering today. She's a follower now. You got it, you got it. All right, so let's talk uh Snowbound for the holidays. Uh, this is uh the third Christmas in July movie. Uh for us, it uh came out on the Hallmark channel yesterday, July 18th, 2026. It stars Marcus Rosner uh as Trey and Vanessa Lenji's as Cassidy. And she's kind of a Christmas in July legend because she was in the movie Take Me Back for Christmas, which is high for the highest-rated uh Hallmark Christmas in July movie of all time. Wow. And my younger daughter would also want me to tell everybody uh she was also in 26 episodes of the television series Glee, uh in seasons three, four, and six.

Uh two writing credits on this one, Courtney McAllister and Tim Stubinski. And I'm all I'm gonna call out the director as well because he uh gave us a whole bunch of fun facts about this movie. Uh Christopher Giroux, he was actually the executive producer of Oh Little Christmas Market that we covered last week. And this was his first directing uh job with Hallmarks. So uh a first timer. Uh so uh Chris Giroux as the director. Here's our little holiday hook on this one. A struggling ski lodge owner is on the verge of losing his family's beloved mountain retreat due to mounting debt. But then a beautiful and sharp-minded hotel chain executive arrives to evaluate the property for a potential acquisition. So yeah, that's about covers it. And uh ready for some fun facts? Yes, I'm always ready for those. All right, a lot of these came from uh Christopher Giroux. Uh he he shot us a whole bunch of uh facts about this movie, and also he was on uh our with our friends uh Gary and Amy, Pour the Wine, it's rom com time podcast. Go give that give that a listen. He talked both about this movie and Oh Little Christmas Market from last week. But the original title for this movie was Uphill for Christmas, and it was filmed at a real uh a real ski hill in Matowa, Ontario, Canada, which is about four hours north of Ontario and three hours uh west of Ottawa. Uh so four hours north of Toronto, three hours uh west of Ottawa, and very cold up there in the mountains. The skiing, ski lift, and tubing sequences were all filmed without using green screens, which I found kind of interesting because it's become so popular in Hallmark movies as just a way to kind of maybe cut some costs uh a little bit easier on the directors, but uh this one was all shot uh without the without any green screens, so very cool. This was filmed about a year and a half ago in February of 2025. And really can't cool. The town of Matowa, they left up their Christmas decorations knowing they were gonna have a Christmas movie being filmed there. Oh, that's cool. I I thought that yeah. And it was really cold. Um, so cold that between the outdoor scenes, the crew had to go indoors to warm up. So uh definitely I I was getting winter vibes in this movie for sure. Not sure about you, but it definitely felt like winter. 100%. Uh the beautiful glass ornaments featured in the films, they were created by a local Ontario business called Crafted Creations. So always want to shout out local businesses when we can. Uh the Wished Lantern sequence that was filmed using real lanterns, so no CGI or anything. Uh and lantern festivals are a real thing. I I actually looked it up on YouTube this morning. There's uh some huge ones in Asia where they're lighting, they're lifting like thousands at a time. So a very cool scene there, but you real lanterns in that scene. This I found interesting. Linden Lodge, all the Christmas trees were real, no artificial trees uh in the lodge there. So uh added a nice little touch to the movie. And last one here, Vanessa Lenji's. You might not have known it, she was pregnant while filming this movie. Could not tell. Nope, not at all. I would I I wouldn't have known. So yeah, those are the fun facts. And uh, what'd you think of this one?

Well, before we do that, I know we some we don't we usually throw in an IMDB rating, but we don't have a rating because this is a new one. But I just wanted to state that uh Oh Little Christmas Market, the movie we reviewed last week. Uh I checked the rating on it this morning and it had a 6.1 with 197 reviews. So I thought that was kind of worth mentioning since we're kind of a week behind on getting any IMDb ratings on these new releases.

Yeah, and I think it's probably gonna take some time until we see, you know, yeah, hundreds and hundreds, or maybe even closer to a thousand, to really get a gauge, but yeah. So I I think that's kind of a fair score, but sure.

Anyways, of my uh overall thoughts on this movie. I found the actress had really good chemistry. I really like Lily and her role in the movie, The Daughter. Uh there was lovely scenery everywhere, and it was filmed nicely. A lot of enthusiasm in this movie. I found myself I found myself rooting for all of this to work out. You know, we know it's gonna work out, but I was like, no, I really want this to work out for everybody. Lovely decorations. Uh, I found this uh relaxing watch. I enjoyed it.

Yeah, I found it kind of relaxing as well, well-paced. Uh again, kind of like last week, a little bit of a throwback storyline from something you might have seen from Hallmark 10 years ago, and there is something to be said for those kind of old throwback movies, just easy watching, feel good, tons of Christmas vibes, and that's what this was. Uh, like you, I like the actors. Uh, I I thought they were great. Uh, but I think the star of this movie was the setting filmed at a real mountain lodge there in the winter. And uh to me, that's what really made the movie stand out. All right, what's what are some things you liked?

I had a few things I liked. One of them is that the Linden Lodge is decorated very nicely, a lot of Christmas spirits, and it's associated, you know, it's their hundredth annual Christmas festival. You know, I like Christmas festivals, you know, I like every year annual Christmas festival, so I thought it was kind of neat. The music in this movie was very Christmas like and festive. It really set the tone in some of the themes and some of the scenes. Um, I really enjoyed the placement of the music and the selection of music. It's kind of something you know I think about when I watch these movies. I I really liked it. I also liked the snowshoe tree. I thought it was a pretty cool idea at the ski lodge. I thought that was a neat idea. I'd never heard of anything like that. I was like, all right, that's cool. And I know um I wrote on here, it looked like it was really cold. And I put on here, I know Rich knows when and where this was filmed, and sure enough, you already told us that information. It looked cold, you could see their breath. And uh I also really liked the almost first kiss moment when they're dancing and listening to the music was such a nice scene. You could see in her eyes how much she liked them. Yeah, there's lots of little things I liked in here. That was that was most of them.

Yeah, speaking of the cold, I heard Vanessa Lenji. So she grew up in a town called Hudson, Quebec, Canada. Very cold town. She said filming this movie was the coldest she'd ever been in her life. So um, yeah, it was definitely cold. And that's the first thing I liked. I love the winter scenery, I love the mountains, the ski trails, the snow, the breath coming off their mouths. Uh, like you, I also called it the decorations, but sophist specifically what I liked is I like the outdoor decorations at night. I think uh whether they were on the patio or wherever, everything was really, and it wasn't like these really elegant, it was more kind of rustic kind of decorations, but really added some really cool ambiance. Like you, I also called out the uh the snow shoe crafting project. That was neat. Um, a couple of scenes I want to call out that didn't make my favorite but were close. Like you, I really liked the scene with Trey and Casty on the balcony where he put on the headphones and then they had their that little tender dance and an almost kiss. Uh, and I also liked the Lantern Festival. That was a fantastic scene as well. Both close to being my favorite scenes, didn't quite make the cut, but I wanted to call both those out. So, yeah, a whole bunch I like about this movie. But again, I'm keeping I'm going back to that. The winter lodge, just the feel, the Christmas vibes was uh was number one for me. Yeah, it's nice. Anything we'd fix in a rewrite?

Yeah, for me right away. I'd I try to have more extras skiing or walking around the ski lodge, especially when they're showing shots of the hills. You know, I'm sure you've gone skiing before. I have gone skiing before. I'm not the best skier, but there's a lot of people there, always. And this is ski season. I was surprised at how few people there were. And I said, you know, to make money, you gotta have a lot more people than there were showing. I understand it's you know, it's expensive to hire extras and all that, but that's something I wish they could have done that. Maybe ask for volunteer skiers to get up and ski for free for the day or something. That was one of them. A little silly one was that that cocoa dispenser that he finally got. Uh, that's not a heated cocoa dispenser, that's like one for iced tea or lemonade or something like that, right? So, like, okay, get one that's in a steel container, you know, at least heat it up. I agree, yeah. And uh, my nerd side, uh, when the power went out and that old PC, right away he goes, like, oh no, the program's locked up or failing. Those PCs take about a minute and a half to reboot, at least though that style. I remember those PCs. I used to build those PCs, so that came right up. I understand. You don't want to wait a minute and a half in the story. Um, and the other one was I don't quite understand, I didn't quite understand what the Evergreen business does. Yeah, like they were consultants, but also buying property. I couldn't quite get a real handle on what their business was. Maybe that's just me not understanding that side of business. Um, those were the things I'd fix in a rewrite.

Yeah, I think you were spot on on that last one because that's my number one thing is I think they needed to do a little better explaining why Cassidy was going to Linden Lodge. Um, because they they it sounds like they run a boutique hotel company, uh, which is fine. And she really quickly, it's only a couple seconds, she says, you know, I'm going to help my my old friend Sam with a you know, with a business, whether they should sell or not. But it was real quick, and I think they could have expanded on that a little bit in that moment. Maybe she could maybe that would have been the time she could have showed some old pictures of her at the lodge and why it was special to her and why she really wants to help him out if she can. Uh, because yeah, I was confused. I actually went back and watched that scene this morning just for some clarification. But yeah, you never want your your watchers of a movie to be confused about anything, and I was a little confused about that as well.

Now that you say it, like it makes sense. Now like, oh yeah, she did say that, but I didn't pick up on it at the moment.

Yeah, it it was super quick, and like I say, give us an extra 30 seconds to kind of go a little more detail. I think it was just saved a little less confusion. My biggest one though is Mr. Asherton, because he's the antagonist, and this is a bad guy. He's stealing their electricity, yeah, he's creating his own festival to undercut their festival. He's secretly going to the mayor, you know, to get at the top of the lease list there for the for the hills, but they're like buddy buddy with the guy. Hey, come get some hot chocolate, let's let's go do some skiing together. I'm all no, no, no, no, no, you can't get all chummy with this guy. This guy's the enemy. So I think I would have wrote Asherton in as more of an antagonist. Now, granted, very rarely do we get a really bad person in Hallmark, but they don't have to be so chummy chummy with the guy.

I know the other owner, I can't remember his name, was you know, he wanted this kind of deal to go down. So I can see why he would be friendly, you know, because he's trying to just do something because they're losing money. So I could see him being friendly, yeah, and our guy not being so friendly.

All right, favorite moment of the movie.

I had a hard time with this one because no real scenes, I mean the balcony scene was cool, um, but I'm not sure anyone's scene stood out for me. So I kind of went with just a silly scene. I like the snow tubing scene, I thought it was funny, and even though I almost put this in a rewrite, like it doesn't look like they're going that fast for her to be screaming the way she is. You know, it looked like they're going three miles an hour, but it looked fun and looked like they were genuinely having a good time. So I like that. It's like one of those little moments where it's just like a little fun moment, little fun break in the story. That was my favorite moment. It's just simple.

So when Christopher Giroux sent me uh kind of the fun facts about this movie, he actually called out his favorite scene, which I want to throw that out well. And it's the lantern scene uh that they used to using real lanterns. It's a good one. It was a beautiful scene. Um, I also called out another one that I really liked, the uh the dancing on the on the uh on the patio there, the headphones on her. I'm the exact same with you. I went with the tubing scene as my favorite. Wow. Um, it was fun, it was whimsical, it was a really good bonding moment for the two of them. You know, they finished, and all of a sudden they want to go back up and do it again. Uh, she was so excited because it's like nothing she'd ever done before. So, yeah, that that ended up being I was kind of between that and the lanterns. And I said, you know, that tubing scene was just a lot of fun, so let's go with that one. So how funny. All right, we always we love our supporting characters, and we always call uh ones out to deserved more screen time. But we had a bunch in this one, but who do you like?

This one was a tough one, too. Um, I went with Lily, even though she had plenty of screen time. I just thought she was so cute. I would have liked to have seen her more with like her friends, her age, like helping in little projects or collaborating, doing some things together. Uh, I would have liked to have seen some of that, but I just thought her character was so good, super cute, super enthusiastic. I I look forward to seeing her in more Hallmark movies.

All right, so I'm going with Mare Robinson, who uh was played by Kate Drummond because she show up until pretty much two-thirds of the movie is over. She's only in the last third. And I really like her. She's done other Hallmark stuff. She played the uh The Mom and Christmas Island a great role, really good movie there. Um, so I really like her, and I would like to have had maybe more of her early on. Maybe Lily goes and tries to sell her a lantern, like she's walking around town or something. Uh so I think I would like to have had a little bit more of Mare Robinson early in that first two-thirds of the movie. That's a good call. Yeah. Okay, this is my wife's favorite segment that we do, Are We Sure, where we call out uh logic checks, uh, put sense uh suspicion of disbelief and in aside, but call it the really obvious one. She says she cracks up every time we do this. So uh, do you have a couple?

I I have several, but I'm gonna try to keep it at two or three. I have three. So I'm sure we have similar ones. We probably have the same, yeah. I'm sure there's one that's very, very obvious, but let's see. I'm sure that this is the same one we agree on. Would someone pay $10 for a Christmas lantern where they just write their wish, and if they buy five, you get a free hot cocoa? Like, so this ties into what Mr. Ash Asherton bought $500 worth of Christmas wishes. That's 10 cups of cocoa, by the way. It's like that was like, are we sure he's gonna do that? That one, I'm sure that's the same one you have. And uh, I also thought, are we sure that there was really 276 lanterns released? I tried to count them on the screen, there was about 27 or so. Um, you know, I'm just being silly here. And I'll I'll throw this last one in. I have a few others, but uh one hour to decorate a Christmas shoe. Yeah, like for me, what do I do with my other 50 minutes of time? Right? That's like a 10-minute job, I think. So that was like, are we sure it takes an hour to decorate a Christmas shoe? I thought that was kind of funny. What are yours? Okay, I didn't have any of those, but oh wow.

Okay. So my first army sure is okay, the power is always going out. Technology in this lodge is non-existent, but but the Wi-Fi like seems to work perfectly all the time. So first, are we sure? So are we sure the Wi-Fi would be perfect at this lodge? Like, no problems whatsoever. Uh, are we sure that Trey, who's in his mid-30s, literally wouldn't have an email address? Um, he says he doesn't have an email. I'm sorry, but the kid, the guy has a kid in school, and any parent will tell you that's how teachers in schools communicate with a parent through email. So I'm not believing that the dude is in his mid-30s and doesn't have an email address. But the biggest one I have, so Cassidy goes from never having skied before. Oh, yeah, to basically within a couple minutes going down like a decent intermediate run and in somewhat knowing what she's doing. Okay, I don't care how athletic you are. You put somebody on ice skates for the first time or skis for the first time, they are gonna be a fish out of water, they are gonna be falling all over the place. It takes a while to kind of get used to being on skis, being on skates. So, yeah, are we sure that she's really gonna be able to ski down that that run having never skied before? That that was my biggest one.

I had that one too, but I wrote down like, well, at least she's wedging like a beginner would. Because I remember when I took a first ski lesson, you know, like the going down the the bunny hill is just you're wedging the whole way down.

Will our lead couple last 12 months? Oh, yeah. They have great chemistry, and he's willing to compromise and go modern a little bit. That was key, I think, because she's not gonna go the other way. So I think his his compromising uh and their chemistry, and she saw the value of what his beliefs are, and I think she shared in that and then those morals and values. I think they're gonna last 12 months. I think they're going all the way. I liked them as a couple, not initially, but they they convinced me.

I started thinking about Marcus Rossner, okay. He always loses the girl, Renee. Like, remember Christmas in Evergreen? He he flies the helicopter in, and and then Ashley Williams dumps him like the next day.

I start thinking other movies like The Christmas Detour, which is a camera movie. She literally cheats on the guy in that movie. I mean, he's her fiance, she cheats on him. Uh, I just watched a birthday wish, he loses Jesse Schramp to Luke McFarlane in that movie. I mean, the guy always never gets the girl, and unfortunately, when all said and done, he's not gonna get the girl in this one either. I think they're two different number one. Uh, he's gonna come around, but boy, he's I don't know how quickly. But the biggest thing is she says in that very like first 10 minutes of the movie, she hates the cold, okay? She wants to spend Christmas on a beach. It's gonna be freezing at this place six months out of the year, okay? She's used to working in this boutique hotel, living a very nice life. She's all of a sudden gonna go live in a very rustic lodge. Oh, I think she's gonna last maybe a couple months, Renee, but in the end, I I I think there's a few too many hurdles in this one. I I like them together, good chemistry, but I I yeah, I'm just not I gotta keep it real, man. I I don't see it lasting for those reasons.

Okay, and it's hard to say because we're right now we're gonna talk about uh the mistletoe meter and we're gonna rate this kiss. Yeah, and you get to go first.

It was a good kiss, it was nicely shot. It was neat the way the kiss at the end panned up to the background, up to the background to end the movie. It was a good number one, there was a good build-up for this kiss as well. There was two, at least two almost kisses, maybe three. Like I wanted to see them kiss. Uh, I was not disappointed. Uh, I gave this kiss an A-very, very well done.

Yeah, it it it it hurts even more because I said they weren't gonna make it, and my wife's probably gonna give me grief for it for me saying they're not gonna make it, but I really like this kiss. Um, I I gave it a flat A. Uh, I thought it was a great first kiss, like like you. I said, great camera work, really passionate, no dumb interruptions or anything. They had their moment and it was a hot kiss. It was it was great. And then they finished off with that second kiss, the camera pulls back, that beautiful ski mountain in the background. Awesome shot. I'm I'm pretty much exactly what you said, but I'm I'm giving it an A, a flat A. Uh no A minus for me. So I really did like this kiss. It was it was really, really good. Uh best one of the Christmas in July movies.

Oh, so for sure. I mean, we haven't seen the last one, but yeah, yep, for sure. So far. Yep, so far. Yeah. All right, who or what won the movie? You know, I don't generally go with the lead, but Vanessa Lyngis as Cassidy, she was so adorable and expressive, and her enthusiasm I found was contagious. And uh just the way she acted her her her body language and her face and her eyes. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Uh, I thought I liked every scene she was in. She was just so quirky and adorable. Uh, from hands down, Vanessa Lindji's won this one for me. She was great. I was thinking about her.

I'm kind of going rogue here a little bit. For me, what won this movie, and it's it's gonna be three first-timers. It's it's Christopher Giroux, the very first time directing a movie, and I thought he did great. I thought this movie was shot beautifully. Um, it had to been tough up, you know, when you're going up and down ski lifts, uh, an old rustic lodge there. You got skiing scenes, not using any green ski screens in this movie, that lantern scene. I mean, I think he did a fantastic job directing. And also, I really had two first-time writers here uh with Courtney McAllister and Tim Stubinski. I see, I think Courtney McAllister had he shared a writing credit on one Hallmark movie like three or four years ago. Uh, Tim Stubinsky had never done any Hallmark writing, and I think the two of them had a good storyline that flowed well, there was good character development. Dialogue was pretty good. It looked, it wasn't great. I mean, they're not first time writing a Hallmark movie, they're not gonna be on the level of a Nina Wyman or Julie Sherman Wolf. I mean, right, great dialogue, but all in all, for a first time, uh, it's hard to break in with Hallmark, and I think they did a pretty good job. So for me, it's the first timers. Christopher Drew, the two writers, I think they're the MVPs of this movie, considering, like I say, first efforts for all of them with Hallmark.

Yep. All right, so we're gonna uh we're gonna rate this one and and this this was the easiest uh symbol of the movie for me to go to because how often do we see a Walkman radio these days? Never. So obviously, Trey, he had he had that thing on. I think there's only like one or two scenes where he didn't have the Walkman and the orange headphones on. Uh so we're gonna go, how many Walkmans does this movie deserve?

I looked at my other reviews and I was like, okay, you know, the 3.75 movies that I I ranked, I like them a little bit more than this one. So this fell in line with my 3.5 movie ratings. So 3.5 Walkmans for this one for me.

I was uh I was in between a 3.5 and a 3.75 looking at my ratings. Um Sam. In the end, I'm I'm going 3.75, but I think it's a soft 3.75. I definitely liked it better. I liked it better than the movie last week, which I may give 3.5 to it, some of the other 3.5s. I think just because I love the scenery and the ambiance of the real ski resort, the winter feels. But then I look at a movie like Christmas under wraps, I don't think it was quite as good as that. So I'm I'm going a soft 3.75 that if that's fair or not. I like I said, I think it was yeah, so I think it was better than a 3.5, not quite maybe to a really solid 3.75 level. So that's off a soft 375 walkmans.

It's on Hulu, it's titled uh Operation Mistletoe. So I'm expecting some kisses here. Um, this is from 2024, starring the super cute Jen Lily. I mean, she is just the cutest as can be. And Nick Bateman, uh, I'll give you a hint, mistletoe was involved, and under it, there will be love.

And uh, I have to think one of the reasons that Hallmark might have picked this one up is because Jen Lily's returned to Hallmark after about a five-year absence. She was in a movie a couple months ago. Um, so she's uh she's back uh working for Hallmark, and maybe that's uh a reason that this one is now under the Hallmark banner.
