Welcome To Hip Talks

SPEAKER_01

Hello everyone and welcome to Hip Talks. I'm your host, Catherine Hinshee. I'm a certified hypnotherapist, NLP practitioner, and Sherm Senior Certified Professional in Human Resources. After spending a decade working in the music industry, my path led me into the world of the healing arts, where science, energy, mindset, and transformation all meet. Each week, I sit down with a different healing practitioner to explore the many powerful modalities available to support our growth, well-being, and personal evolution. So come with me on this journey of discovery and learn about all the opportunities for healing and transformation that are available to all of us. And I am so excited to be launching this podcast that I've been preparing for some time now.

Why This Show Exists

SPEAKER_01

This episode, the first premiere episode, is a little bit different. I'm just going to introduce myself to everybody and let you know what we have in store. Coming up, all episodes are going to be a little bit of a different format. We'll be interviewing a different healing practitioner each episode. And these are people that I have known or have met along the way, and they're all amazing. And I felt really called to do this podcast because in my journeys, in, you know, late in life, changing another career switch, changing gears, like a 180 to doing this um hypnotherapy. I have met so many great people and I have learned so many incredible things. And it's all new to me. And I know that there are a lot of people who are deep in the weeds into this world, this woo-woo world, if you will. But that wasn't me when I got started. And I feel like there are a lot of people who are like me who are curious what is hypnotherapy? What is hypnosis? What is Reiki? What is EFT tapping? And so on and so forth. And there are so many different people out there changing the world, changing lives. And I felt really uh compelled to bring you their stories because they're amazing. And I think you'll find them fun, entertaining, interesting.

Early Acting Dreams And Disillusion

SPEAKER_01

So a little bit about me. I have a degree in acting, and I went to college in New York City. I was an actor for many years after that. And then I became very disenchanted with the whole business just as my career began taking off, and I realized all of the things that drew me to wanting to be an actor, which was I really loved that creativity of creating a character and being able to just disappear into somebody that wasn't me. Because I was an introvert, I was shy, I had, you know, low self-esteem, self-doubt, whatever. But when I was a character, I could be, I could be anybody. I could be from anywhere, I could be confident or nasty or shrewd or whatever, sly. I mean, all of the things. And it was lots of fun. And I loved it. And I loved every bit of the training. But in the real world of pursuing a career, it's so much more, especially when you're, you know, when you're famous, that's a different story. But when you're starting out, it's so much more about your manicure and what you look like and who you know than anything creative. It was a real disappointment.

9/11 And A Career Pivot

SPEAKER_01

And it was at 9-11, and I remember walking over the Brooklyn Bridge after I saw the buildings come down, and I thought I was going to die. And I didn't die, thank goodness. And walking over that bridge and thinking, what am I doing? There's gotta be more to life than you know, pursuing an acting career because it just felt so shallow. And so then for many years, I worked on the other side and I worked in film production, and I even had my own company for a while, production company, and I lost a lot of money and time and grew a lot of gray hairs, but I chalked up to my a master's degree, if you will, and I learned so much, and I met so many great people, people that I'm still in touch with today, many careers and lifetimes later, and I feel grateful. And then I wanted to have a kid, and so I left the film world. Oh, actually, before that I was doing casting. I did casting for a long time and I loved it. But casting um is very creative, but it doesn't really pay the bills. So I took

a day job and I got a lot of fertility treatments to get pregnant. Took a few years and a couple of miscarriages, and then I got pregnant and I had my son four months before I turned 40, just under the wire, I always joke about. And that was amazing. And then I was able to for a few months go back to casting, and I had the great pleasure and joy to work with the late Jay Bender at Bender Casting, helping to cast Broadway musicals and tours. And oh my gosh, Jay was my gay Jewish dad. He was amazing. Unfortunately, type of work does not pay enough to live on in New York City, and I was not a spring chicken.

Climbing At ASCAP And HR Impact

SPEAKER_01

I was I was, you know, in my early 40s with a toddler, and so I went and took a job at ASCAP. I don't know if you know what ASCAP is, but it's the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. And what it is is it's a member organization for songwriters and music publishers. And I absolutely loved it, and I worked my way up the ladder. I started out as the executive assistant to the general counsel. I took that job knowing that it was sort of a step backwards because I felt like I could learn so much from her, and you know, she would give me the opportunity to grow. And both of those things were very, very true. And she very shortly became the CEO and I moved with her, and then I had the opportunity to pitch her on the job of chief of staff and convince her that she needed one and that I was the one to do it. I remember sitting in the restaurant below the offices, and you know, I had printed out my PowerPoint, and I said, I'm going to do this Beth style. That was her name, Beth, and because she always loved a nice PowerPoint presentation. And I got the job and it was pretty incredible. And while I was chief of staff, I went back and got my senior certification at Shirem for Human Resources. And after that certification, I created Life at ASCAP and a number of programs. And one of the ones that I was most proud of was the Leadership Mentor Program. And I ran and facilitated that program for four years before I left with the help of the great Gary Schumann, my mentor and coach. And he was the executive coach at ASCAP. Before I left, after I had the opportunity to be chief of staff, I moved over to the human resources department and I was senior director of human resources. And really my function was very much about employee engagement and you know, all of the employee experience overall. I was still running life at ASCAP and I was still maintaining a lot of my chief of staff duties. I was still being the board liaison and sort of production managing all of the board meetings, helping the CEO with all kinds of things.

Marathon High To Cancer Diagnosis

SPEAKER_01

And then the pandemic happened, and then we came out of the pandemic, and I was a lifelong runner, and I had run the marathon in New York City in 2019. And in 2021, I ran another race with a dear friend in Philadelphia, and I had my personal record. It was the Broad Street run, 10 miles, and I ran the fastest race I had ever run, and I was on top of my game and feeling on top of the world. And three days later, I went to have my annual mammogram, and I had cancer, breast cancer. I was totally shocked. I said, You must be mistaken. This isn't me. It doesn't run in my family. I'm very healthy. And I wasn't mistaken. So there began my journey through um breast cancer treatment.

Life Upheaval And Search For Purpose

SPEAKER_01

I had five surgeries and a mastectomy ultimately. And I continued just, you know, foraging ahead, but my personal life imploded and my marriage nearly ended. And I just had another one of those moments where I felt like, what am I doing? I'm here for a purpose. But what is it? And I don't think it is what I'm doing now. I think it's something higher, and I just don't know what it is. And so I quit my job at ASCAP. That was very hard, and all of the relationships and people that I had grown to love and know and learn from. And especially Beth, the CEO, who I'm forever indebted to, and will forever hold dear in my heart. And I went off on a sort of a spiritual quest.

Discovering Hypnotherapy As A Calling

SPEAKER_01

And I came across on Instagram of all places, I came across a hypnotherapist, and I began seeing her, and she helped me immensely. And she was also helping me figure out what what my next steps were going to be, where I was gonna go. And it was during a session during hypnosis one day, where it was one of those light bulb moments, and all of a sudden, I want to be what makes people feel as good as you just made me feel. So there I began my journey. I found HMI, um, which is the oldest accredited hypnotherapy school in the United States. It's been around for over 50 years. And I spent a year becoming certified as a hypnotherapist, getting certified as an NLP practitioner, which is something we'll learn about in the future episodes.

Training At HMI And Certifications

SPEAKER_01

Getting my certification as a Ricky 1 practitioner and soon-to-be RICI 2 practitioner. I also got specialized certifications in hypnosis and sports performance, hypnosis and trauma, and most recently hypnosis and weight loss, among other things. And I am now currently in the second year at HMI, which is a program, it's an AOS, an Association Occupational Studies in Mind-Body Psychology. So it's sort of taking all of the modalities and all of the different things in the psychology world, including all of the things listed in the DSM 5, which is the diagnostic and statistical manual for all psychiatric diagnoses and learning everything and sort of putting it together with all of the modalities that I learned. And wow, it is incredible. I am going to just feel like my head is going to explode, but I graduate in May and I'm quick, I can't wait. I'm very excited. And in the meantime, keeping myself busy, I also partnered with Wellness Company and Tech Platform and have been getting certified and trained to become a corporate wellness coach.

Corporate Wellness And Future Vision

SPEAKER_01

And I am almost finished with that, and I cannot wait. And I know that melding my HR background and all of these wellness things that I have, these you know, certifications and skills and knowledge and this passion for is gonna just come together beautifully to be able to really help people, I think. And I feel like, okay, I'm on the right path, and this is where I'm meant to be. I am meant to shine my light, as I say. So here I am. I have had the absolute pleasure and joy to help a number of people. I help people quit smoking and get pregnant and lose weight and overcome fear of public speaking, fear of driving creative
