The Gut-Brain Connection: Essential Raw Dog Food Advice for Calming Anxious, Hyperactive & Aggressive Dogs - When your dog is anxious, hyperactive, or displaying signs of aggression, your first instinct might be to book a training class or consult a behaviourist. But what if the root of the problem isn’t in your dog’s mind, but in their tummy? In this eye-opening episode of The Raw Feeding Journal, host Charlotte sits down with industry expert Robin to explore one of the most fascinating and often overlooked aspects of canine health: the powerful connection between the gut and the brain.
Understanding the Gut-Brain Axis
For years, we’ve treated behaviour and digestion as two entirely separate systems. However, emerging science reveals that they are intricately linked through what’s known as the gut-brain axis. This is a direct, two-way communication superhighway between your dog’s digestive system and their central nervous system. In this episode, Robin breaks down exactly how this works—explaining how the gut microbiome (the trillions of bacteria living in your dog’s digestive tract) directly influences mood, stress responses, memory, and even how easily your dog can be trained.
Perhaps most surprisingly, Robin reveals that a significant portion of the body’s serotonin—the "feel-good" neurotransmitter responsible for regulating mood—is actually produced in the gut, not the brain. This means that a dog with poor gut health may genuinely struggle to feel calm, content, or emotionally balanced. This connection is increasingly supported by scientific research, such as studies published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which highlight the microbiome's role in behaviour.
What Happens When the Gut is Out of Balance?
Charlotte and Robin dive deep into the concept of dysbiosis—an imbalance in the gut microbiome that can trigger chronic, low-grade inflammation throughout the body. This inflammation doesn’t just cause physical discomfort; it can disrupt neurotransmitter function and activate the body’s stress response system, which has been directly linked to increased aggression and anxiety in dogs. We also explore the striking connection between gastrointestinal disorders, such as IBS, and behavioural changes.
The Power of Probiotics
Could a simple dietary addition help calm your anxious dog? In this episode, Robin explains the remarkable role of probiotics in supporting both digestive and emotional health. Beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, have been shown to reduce anxiety and lower cortisol (the stress hormone) by producing GABA, a naturally calming neurotransmitter. The pivotal role of a healthy microbiome is a growing area of veterinary focus, as detailed by resources like the American Kennel Club (AKC). Robin also shares a fantastic natural source of probiotics that many raw feeders already have in their freezers—green tripe—and explains why it’s such a powerhouse for gut flora balance.
Why Diet Matters More Than You Think
This episode takes a hard look at how what goes in the bowl affects what comes out in behaviour. Robin discusses the research showing that dogs fed highly processed diets are more likely to display negative behaviours, and why so many owners report dramatic improvements after switching to a natural, species-appropriate diet. We cover:
- Energy & Blood Sugar: Why diets high in refined carbohydrates can cause erratic energy spikes and crashes, leading to hyperactivity and mood swings.
- The Protein Advantage: How high-protein diets promote satiety and provide steady, sustained energy for a calmer disposition.
- Essential Vitamins: The critical role of B vitamins, particularly B6, in converting tryptophan into mood-regulating serotonin.
The Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Robin explains why omega-3 fatty acids—specifically EPA and DHA—are non-negotiable for cognitive health and emotional stability. Since dogs cannot produce these essential fats themselves, they must come from the diet. We discuss compelling research showing that aggressive dogs often have lower DHA levels and an imbalanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. For guidance on essential nutrients, resources from bodies like the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) offer valuable insight into canine dietary needs.
Ingredient Quality and Chewing as Enrichment
Finally, Charlotte and Robin discuss why ingredient quality is paramount, revealing how low-grade ingredients can actually stimulate inflammatory proteins associated with anxiety and stress. The episode wraps up on a positive, practical note by exploring the therapeutic benefits of chewing—a natural behaviour that releases feel-good endorphins like dopamine. The importance of enrichment for canine welfare is strongly advocated by leading welfare charities such as the RSPCA and the PDSA.
Key Takeaways for Every Dog Owner
Whether you’re dealing with a reactive rescue, an anxious puppy, or simply want to give your dog the best possible foundation for a happy life, this episode is packed with actionable insights. By understanding and nurturing the gut-brain connection through high-quality nutrition, probiotics, omega-3s, and enrichment, you can support not just your dog’s physical health, but their emotional well-being too. Because, as Robin so perfectly puts it, a healthy gut leads to a happy, well-behaved pet.

Hello and welcome back to the Raw Feeding Journal. I'm Charlotte.
SPEAKER_00And I'm Robin. Today we're diving into a common question we get asked all the time. What is the number one benefit of feeding raw dog food?
SPEAKER_01That's such a great topic, Robin. Raw feeding has gained so much popularity here in the UK. But with all the information out there, it can be overwhelming for newcomers to figure out the biggest reason why it's considered so beneficial.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, Charlotte. And while raw feeding offers many advantages, one stands out as the most fundamental. Maximum nutrient absorption. When you feed your dog raw, unprocessed food, their body can absorb and utilize nearly 100% of the natural vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
SPEAKER_01That's amazing! But why is nutrient absorption so much better with raw food compared to, say, processed kibble?
SPEAKER_00It all comes down to processing. Dry commercial food is cooked at high temperatures, which destroys many of the natural nutrients and enzymes in the ingredients. Even though synthetic vitamins are added back later, they're not as bioavailable. That means your dog's body struggles to absorb and use them efficiently.
SPEAKER_01So feeding raw means you're giving your dog nutrients in their most natural, easily absorbed form.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. With raw dog food, you're preserving all of those essential nutrients. For instance, raw meat is rich in bioavailable iron, zinc, and B vitamins, which are critical for energy production, immune function, and overall health.
SPEAKER_01That makes so much sense. Are there specific nutrients that dogs benefit from the most when eating raw?
SPEAKER_00Yes, there are several. Amino acids, for example, are the building blocks of protein, and raw diets provide them in their complete form. These amino acids are crucial for muscle development, skin and coat health, and even brain function.
SPEAKER_01And what about vitamins?
SPEAKER_00Raw diets are fantastic for fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. These vitamins are absorbed alongside the healthy fats found in raw meat and organ meat. For example, vitamin A supports vision and skin health, while vitamin D is essential for strong bones.
SPEAKER_01I've also heard a lot about omega-3 fatty acids. How does raw food help with that?
SPEAKER_00Omega-3 fatty acids are absolutely essential for dogs, and raw diets are an excellent source. These fatty acids like DHA and EPA help reduce inflammation, improve cognitive function, and support joint health. Oily fish, such as sardines or mackerel, is a great way to include omega-3s in a raw diet.
SPEAKER_01That's amazing. So wool feeding isn't just about what goes in the bowl, it's really about how well your dog's body can use what's in the bowl.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. And when your dog is absorbing nutrients more efficiently, you'll notice visible changes. Their coat becomes shinier, their energy levels improve, and their overall health gets a boost.
SPEAKER_01For someone who's new to raw feeding, how can they make sure their dog is getting a balanced diet?
SPEAKER_00That's a great question. The key is variety. A balanced raw diet typically includes muscle meat, organ meat, raw meaty bones, and sometimes small amounts of dog-safe fruits and vegetables for fibre and additional micronutrients. Rotating proteins like beef, chicken, lamb, and fish ensures your dog gets a wide range of nutrients.
SPEAKER_01And for those who are worried about balancing nutrients themselves.
SPEAKER_00There are plenty of complete raw food options available in the UK that are pre-formulated to meet nutritional standards. These take the guesswork out of raw feeding and ensure your dog gets everything they need.
SPEAKER_01That's really helpful. Before we wrap up, any final tips for dog owners who want to maximize the benefits of raw feeding?
SPEAKER_00Yes, a couple of quick tips. First, always buy high-quality, human-grade ingredients from trusted suppliers to ensure safety and nutritional value. And second, consult with your vet or a pet nutritionist to make sure the diet is tailored to your dog's specific needs, especially if they have any health conditions.
SPEAKER_01Thanks so much, Robin. This has been such an insightful discussion. Switching to raw can feel overwhelming at first, but understanding the incredible benefits, like maximum nutrient absorption, makes it all worthwhile.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Raw feeding is one of the best ways to support your dog's health, happiness, and longevity.
