Did You Really Say That?!

Psalm 141:3 says, "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.”

God spoke the universe and everything in it into existence. Words have the power to bless and to curse, to bring life and death. The words we speak to others, even about ourselves can also bring blessings and curses. So it’s no surprise Jesus warned His disciples they will be held accountable for every idle word spoken.

James three ten, and I'm reading this out of the Amplified, says, Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing. These things, my brothers, should not be this way, for we have a moral obligation to speak in a manner that reflects our fear of God and profound respect for his precepts. Proverbs 1821 out of the King James states, Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. So yesterday I talked about taking every thought captive and how our thoughts naturally influence our emotions, and today we're going to talk about how our emotions influence our words. As we see from the two verses I quoted, words can bring blessings and curses, life and death. I believe that's why Jesus told his disciples, as recorded in Matthew 12, 36, that all men, including women, will be held accountable for every idle word spoken. We often think of these verses as words that we speak to others, or maybe we read these verses to comfort ourselves for words that have been spoken to us. But what about the words that we speak against ourselves? Something the Holy Spirit has been working with me on is looking at myself first before I start pointing fingers at anybody else. And this lesson on words is no exception. Words can make agreements in the spiritual realm that will manifest in some shape or form in the physical realm. Rick Renner says in the spiritual realm, your words act like a signature on a hidden contract. Every time you speak a belief out loud, you give spiritual permission for it to happen. Just like a legal document binds you in the court of law, spoken words give spiritual forces the right to shape your life. For example, if you have ever said or maybe you've heard, I am a failure or I am getting sick, essentially words are signing a contract with dark forces in the spiritual realm because that means you're coming into agreement with the calamity. This can also open a door for a spirit of fear to wreak havoc on your life. The spirit of fear is mentioned in 2 Timothy 1.7 and is contrasted with power, love, and a sound mind. The spirit of fear is not a feeling of dread or anxiety, but an antagonistic force whose intention is to get you to doubt and contradict your identity in Christ. In fact, I will go out on a limb here and say that many of the problems we face today would be eliminated or at the very least minimized if we as Christians remembered, stood for, and believed our true identity in Christ. Go back and read Genesis and specifically the fall regarding Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve both messed up because they allowed the serpent to rob them of their identity. And we've been struggling with our identity ever since. Back to how words can create spiritual agreements. Now some people may disagree with me because once a person gets saved, your spirit is renewed and you are a new creation, which I do agree with, but there are often spiritual agreements such as ungodly vows, soul ties, and even generational curses that can still impact a believer's mind and emotions, AKA the soul. Now with that being said, I do believe that Christ took every punishment of sin, even the curses upon himself when he was on the cross as Galatians three thirteen states, and yes, I believe that those curses were broken, but it's up to each individual to come into agreement with that. I explain it like this just because you offer someone a gift does not mean that they're going to accept it. Or let me put it another way, if I were to give you a brand new Apple laptop with all the latest capabilities and functionalities that you can imagine right at your fingertips, but you don't want to learn anything about the capabilities because the only thing you wanted to do is send emails, play Monopoly, and watch YouTube. And within a year you're going to be bored with that laptop and either want something else or just set it aside for the sake of emails, games, and social media. So whose fault is that? Is it mine for giving it to you or you for not wanting to learn all about the capabilities and benefits that it has? And I think many of us, well, in fact, I think all of us at some point are guilty of treating Christianity the same way. We want our salvation and we have accepted Christ for it because after all, heaven is a much better deal than hell, but that's not all there is. We have freedom from sin, we have access to miracles, we have access to the abundant life. We don't just have access, we have legal rights because it's what Jesus promised, and it's what he was beaten and died and rose again for. And yet we are still living in bondage and defeat, and like my pastor says, laying down and allowing the enemy to molest you and everything that concerns you. So explain to me how this happens unless we are still coming into agreement with the enemy by the words we speak. You fill in your own blanks, but if you're saying, I'll never this, I'll never that, I won't ever do this, I won't ever be that, it'll always be this way, I'll always do that, these, my friend, are spiritual contracts that you're signing. But the good news is it doesn't have to be this way. The first thing to do is repent. Ask God for forgiveness for the careless and negative words that you've spoken. And not only will God forgive you, those agreements will become null and void. Then declare truth by replacing those negative agreements with the truth and promises found in the scriptures. Two good ways to combat this is by taking every thought captive and surrender it to Christ again, Second Corinthians 10 5. And also ask God to set a watch over your mouth, as stated in Psalms 141:3, which says, Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth and keep the door of my lips. God not only wants to protect others from our words, but he also wants to protect us from our own words as well. Love you guys. Good night.
