This is a hard day to like talk on because like you have Good Friday, where it's obvious what you're gonna talk about, then you have Easter Sunday, where it's obvious what you're gonna talk about. But the day in between, I was thinking about it this week, the tension, putting myself in the the shoes of the disciples sitting in the upper room, like what the heck? What the heck?

And the uncertainty and the confusion and the fear. But being on this side of things, knowing that Jesus was still moving, even on the day that we couldn't see him, even on the day that all hope felt lost, he was moving. He was doing something. So today I want to talk about what he was doing. And I want to talk about what today is, what these three days, holy week, holy weekend, what it means. Because the cross and the tomb wasn't just so that we could get to heaven, but it was a birthday. You guys know that was a birthday? It was a birthday of his bride. Yes. He birthed his bride that weekend. And it was a birth of the bride that through whom heaven and earth would be made one and heaven would come to earth. And so I'm gonna get emotional tonight. It's okay. But I think it's okay to sit tonight in that tension too, of knowing that even us today, we feel that tension and that confusion sometimes. But he's doing something. So I kind of want to start with going backwards. And you know, we do our instruct, engage, activate, so we're gonna have time of discussion and stuff too. But I want us to work backwards. You guys brought your Bibles, right?

Nothing like a little holy guilt, just a little bit. No, it's fine. I've got it here, but if you want to follow along, uh, we're actually gonna look at Genesis 2. We're gonna start in Genesis 2. I'm in the ESV. You can be in anything except for you. I know you love the amplified. You can be in anything but the message. We're gonna be in Genesis 2. We're gonna look at verses 20 to 22. You guys know I love to go back. If you if you I mean, I think all of you have heard me talk before. Genesis 1 through 3 unpacks the whole Bible. You want to know the story of the Bible, why the Bible exists? It's all in Genesis 1 through 3. So when I was thinking about today, and I was thinking about Easter weekend and what was going on, and he was putting this thing in me about the bride. I did it for my bride, it was all for my bride. I of course went back. So in Genesis 2, 20 to 22, this is where we have Adam's in the garden. He's he's participating in creation with the Lord, he's partnering with the Lord, and he's joining in in this process of naming the animals and tending the garden and keeping the garden, expanding the garden. The Lord looks at this partner that he's made and says, It's not good that he doesn't have a partner. He says, It's not good that he doesn't have a partner. And there was no animal found within, no beast found within the garden that was a suitable partner for him. God had to make a partner for him. And he says, Uh, the man gave names to all the livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not a found, there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon him, and while he slept, he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man, he made into a woman and brought her in brought her to the man. And we have Adam go, gives his little Shakespearean poem and says, Flesh in my flesh, all that stuff. What's going on here? We have a son of God, first son of God, co-laboring in the garden temple space. You want to go into that more? Come Wednesday night for Bible study. But he's co-laboring with the Lord in temple space, in sacred space. And God says, I need to make my son a bride, because it's not fit that he should do this work alone. It's not fit that he should go through this process and partner with me alone. It's not the full expression yet of my design. He needs a bride. And I want us to have Adam in mind as we move forward and think about a few things. One, Adam's put to sleep. The Lord requires Adam to trust and lay down. The Lord separates Adam's side, and it costs Adam something to have a bride. It costs him something to have a bride. It costs him a rib. Are you following me? It costs Adam something to have a partner. So I was thinking on this this week, and was again on this thing of the bride, and I was thinking of Genesis 2, and then I came to John 19. John 19, 32 to 34. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. This is the end of the crucifixion. Jesus has gone through absolute torment. I mean, to the point where he doesn't even look like a human being anymore. He's just had this moment on the cross right before this, where he's crying out to the Lord. He's crying out to the Lord, and he's crying out to the Lord. He says, I'm thirsty. And then he gives his spirit to the Lord. And it's right after this that we find this moment. And I was looking into some of the Greek, and that word there for side. Anyone know what that word is in the Greek? It's pleura, which means side and rib. It means side and rib. And we have this moment where blood mixes with water, and medically speaking, that speaks to his lungs being pierced. Speaks to his lungs being pierced, but also we know blood and water is life. I'd like to propose to us tonight that this is the moment the Lord's birthing his bride. He's created the potential for the life of his bride to happen. It's the start of something. We're not there yet. We got to get to Sunday morning. But it's the start of the birthing of the bride. That he's he's paying a price. He's had to trust the Lord and be put under. He's not conscious, right? He's his body's dead. His side is opened up. He's pierced in the rib. And life bursts forth from him. See, in both moments, the bride comes from a man, but only in Jesus does that cost come from redemption. See, Adam fails his bride. Jesus doesn't. Adam in passivity allows his bride to fall, and then he doesn't cover her. Jesus proactively goes to the tree for her. Jesus goes to the tree for her. Knowing what's coming. But knowing he needs a partner. It's not fit for him to be alone in the work. He needs a bride. Ephesians 5, 25 to 27 tells us this. It says, Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. When Jesus goes to the cross, he's doing so on behalf of his bride. He's doing so on behalf of his bride. I think it's it's interesting when we rewind even just a little bit further into Genesis 1. What is the charge the Lord gives Adam and Eve? We don't have Adam and Eve yet, Bible people out there who want to freak out that I just said that, but we have humans, right? What's the charge that he gives Adam and Eve? He says, go forth, be fruitful, and multiply. I don't want to give a full biology lesson, but you cannot multiply without a bride. You physically cannot multiply without a bride. And I think when we look at Ephesians and we look at a few, we're gonna look at Ephesians 2 in a second, too. We've got to remember and look at this role of a bride. The bride of Adam, Adam and Eve are charged with going forth, multiplying, and spreading dominion. How does dominion spread through the multiplication of his people? Can't happen without Eve. We're gonna get to a cool moment in Matthew in a second, but brides carry life. The bride's meant to carry life. And the bride's meant to multiply life. Jesus knew the role of the bride was gonna be to multiply life. And he said, My bride needs to be holy and without blemish, then. Because you will reproduce whatever's inside of you. So the cross brings the bride forth, but the resurrection, which is where we're going, the resurrection is where the bride is actually fully brought to life. The cross brings the bride forth. The process is started, but the resurrection is the seal on the marriage certificate. Ephesians 2, 1 through 10 says, And you were dead in the trespasses of sin in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience, among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together in Christ. By grace you have been saved and raised up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. I want to pause there for a second, we're gonna keep going. I never realized that there's marriage and bride imagery here. So you guys ever see an old Jewish wedding how they would do it? So the Last Supper is essentially a Jewish wedding. When you look at the Last Supper, I'm not gonna go again. You want to do that? Come to Bible study on Wednesday. But the Jewish ceremony would be the groom would sit at a table, and part of the ceremony, he would invite the bride to the table to sit with him, and they would share a cup, and he would break bread and bless it with her. Where are we seated? We're seated next to the bridegroom. This has to be so ingrained in our identity. I don't know, I need to grow, Nick, because this was the first time I've really gone deep, and it's just been two weeks. We have to be so ingrained in our identity of bride that we are married to a king who paid the ultimate price for us and didn't stay dead, but he rose again for us. Like you guys get that? He rose again for you. He didn't rise again because it was cool and superhuman. Yeah, it is, but he rose again for you. If we don't have the resurrection, 1 Corinthians 15 says, if we don't have the resurrection, none of it matters. It doesn't matter. Everything that you're doing is a waste of time. But because we have the resurrection, we can have hope and faith that Jesus is who he says he is. Verse 7, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For if we are, for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. There's two things there I want us to realize. Verse 7, so that in the coming ages, you guys know we're in that, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace and kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. Do you want to know how his immeasurable riches and grace are revealed? It's through you living like his bride. He's revealed, your bridegroom is revealed in you being his bride, living like his bride. And the other thing I want us to look at is verse 10 for we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works. You were created for good. You as his bride were created for good. Your life is good. What he's put in you is good. He's called you his bride. Do you think he would settle for just broken people? He's making you holy and whole because you're his bride. Are you guys with me? This is not about Jesus coming back to life. This is about a people being bought, uh, being bought and brought into his life. The resurrection of Jesus empowers us to stand against the powers of sin and death now. It's not about you getting somewhere when you're dead. It's about you living in the fullness of what he paid for now. Because he said you're mine. Because he said you're my bride. It's not a coming reality. This is a reality you live in now. This is real. I'm gonna we say this to the boys. We say, don't half butt. Do you get what I'm saying? Can't half butt. We cannot half-bat half-butt this walk. We cannot half-butt our identity. You are fully his bride. You're not half his bride. You are fully his bride. You want to say something, Dan?

So much of the church is remembering death. And we do remember the death, and we value the death of Christ. But if he's called us to a resurrection life, then we have to have a resurrection mindset, an identity with the bride, the resurrected life manifest, resurrection mindset of God in us, kind of thing. A different mindset.

So yeah. You're you are his bride. Sorry, dudes, I know that sometimes feels weird for us to think about, but you're his bride. So how?

Yeah. So how? What does this mean? How can we now identify as his bride because of the resurrection? How can we now walk in the fullness of what it means to be his bride, to carry his stamp, to carry his seal as our bridegroom? Right? You guys know culturally, brides were known by their bridegroom. So when they would go out in the town, they'd say, This is Paul's wife Anna. Let's make sure that we are good to her the way we would be good to Paul.

Let's make sure we would be good to her the way we'd be good to Paul. That's Jay's wife Erin. Let's make sure we'd be good to her, like we would be good to Jay. Right? There's an identity piece and a revealing peace that comes because we have the resurrection, because that opened the door and unlocked that reality for us to walk in and live in. And there's this interesting moment in John chapter 20, starting at verse 19. I don't Normally jump around like this, so this is different for me, but there's just so much going on. John 20, 19. John 20, verse 19, starting there. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, so this is Easter Sunday, even though it may not have been a Sunday back then, but Easter Sunday, uh, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. Can you imagine how crazy that would be? Like your best friend died yesterday or died two days ago. You've got the doors locked everywhere. This is like David Blaine level stuff. Like, what is going on? And all of a sudden he's just there with you and he says, Hey, chill. Don't freak out. So one of the weirdest things in the Bible, like angels show up and they say, Don't freak out, and they have a million eyes. He says, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. Just take a second on that one.

And the Amplified says, As my representatives, I'm sending you as my representatives.

Yeah. Interesting. Brides would represent the bridegroom. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they have forgiven them. If you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld. Where have we seen this before? Where have we seen this before? The breathing. Someone call it out.

When he breathed into Adam's nostrils.

It's the undoing of everything that went wrong with Adam. It started with the cross where he paid the cost and his side was opened up. On top of everything else, yes, but there. The moment he's dead and his side is open and life spills out from him, he stays in the grave for a day. We know Peter tells us he was doing all kinds of wild stuff, but he stays in the grave. The next day he rises again. And there's a fresh breath of the spirit poured out on his bride. Come on. There's a fresh breath of his spirit poured out on his bride. This is the start of something new. We're supposed to look at this and say, something's just been undone and something's been made new. It's Easter evening. The women have already come to the disciples and said, Jesus is alive, and they're like, You're nuts, no way. It's day one of his reign. It's day one. He doesn't come down with some F-14s and tomahawk missiles and all that stuff. He doesn't come down to rain hellfire on Rome. He goes where his bride is and he breathes on them. And he brings life. And says, just as the Lord sent, just as my father sent me, I'm sending you. Because brides represent their bridegroom. See, the resurrection is the beginning of the wedding story. The bride price was paid on the cross, the certificate was sealed at the resurrection. And the wedding day started all the way back then. And we know the feast is coming. We're not there yet. But the wedding party, the wedding story started that third day, 2,000 years ago. It's the beginning of the wedding story. It's the moment the bridegroom rises and the union with his bride becomes possible and alive. On the evening of the resurrection, the bridegroom doesn't just appear, he breathes. He breathes. And what is he breathing? He's breathing the Holy Spirit. Why? The Holy Spirit is the authority and the seal of his covenant with us as his bride. It's the marker that you belong to him because you are in relationship with him. How do we know that? Because the Holy Spirit lives in you. The new covenant is here. The curse isn't just broken, it's undone. He doesn't just break it and say this is over with. He undoes the whole thing. He goes back to Adam's moments, just like God said the offspring of Eve would do in Genesis 3. And he undoes the whole thing.

Which he was doing through the whole gospel. He's unwinding the whole thing through the whole gospel. So I'm telling you, Genesis 1 through 3, you gotta know it by heart. But he's undoing the whole thing, and we're in this moment now in the upper room, in chaos and confusion, and he steps in in peace and steps in in calm. And he undoes the whole thing.

And then in Matthew 28, 18 to 20, we have, and Jesus came and said to them, This is the 40 days after the resurrection where he's hung out with them. He's hung out with them for four days. One of my favorite things is that he I don't think we know, I think like a few days after the resurrection, he cooks breakfast for his homies. Right, and there's a beautiful moment with Peter there, but Matthew 18, this is right as he's about to ascend, this is right before the ascension. And he says, And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded to you. And behold, I am with you to the end of the age. This sounds a whole lot like something else from Genesis. Sounds a whole lot like be fruitful, multiply, and spread dominion. This is the called the Great Commission, but this is really the again the undoing of the original commission. It's the re-establishment of the original commission. But how do how do they expand? How do they multiply now? How well you need a you need a bride who carries life who's going to bring forth sons and daughters. You need a bride who carries life who's going to bring forth sons and daughters. Jesus is telling us how you do that. Go make disciples. Go bring more into my bride.

And he expands his outreach from Jews to all nations.

Everyone. Yeah, he says, go make disciples of all nations. Because it all belongs to me now. How are we doing that? He's not coming in like a tyrant. He's not coming in like some war general. He's coming in and saying, go bring my bride home. Go make disciples. It was not fit for him to be alone. He needed a partner. And the partner is you. It's the role of the bride. It's the role of the bride to partner with the bridegroom in bringing forth sons and daughters. That's only possible because of the resurrection. It's only possible because he paid the price with his life. See, in this moment, we have the breathing on the disciples, and then we have this moment right before the ascension with the bride of Christ, his church, is now filled with the Spirit through his resurrection. Now you get to go undo the curse. The bride participates in the bridegroom's work. She's a partner. She's a partner. You're supposed to go now and do the same thing he does. Undo the curse. And when you do that, through raising up disciples, healing the sick, doing all the things that he does, you're advancing his kingdom. You're spreading the dominion of the garden. You guys with me? Are you good? Am I making sense? Okay. You're the bride of Christ. You're purchased with the blood, redeemed through the resurrection, and filled with the spirit. From his side, the bride was purchased. With his resurrection, she's brought to life. And by his spirit, she's sent and commissioned to go and participate in his work. So I want to make some time and some space for us to actually get into some discussion time. I have these discussion questions for us to just engage with this a little bit and think about it and maybe iron out some thoughts.

I always had a hard time. I've been walking with the word a long time, but I've always had a hard time with the term bride of Christ. And I have been a bride. I'm literal, visually literal, I should say. So like I couldn't, I don't wrap my head around it well, like you said, more than one. Um but as I'm sitting here thinking about it, what's coming to my brain is uh you're only a bride for a day. And then you're a wife. And I think that's where my wrestle is at the moment. I haven't thought about it like that before, but that's what's hitting me right now. You're only a bride for a day. Then you never get called a bride again. You never get called a groom again. You're a wife.

So I guess after that life starts as one.

Yeah. But I also understand the piece of walking alone. I may have been a bride and I may now be a wife, but I'm also walking this path alone. Praying for the groom to come in to become part of the bride. But I get that. So I I just want to share that you know, you guys who are not married are not necessarily alone in that either. But I don't know what to do with that piece that's stuck in my head right now. That you're only a bride for a day, it's making me really sad.

I mean I I hear it, but some of it might be semantics. I don't want to say that what you're feeling isn't true. I think I think you again should wrestle with that. But um I still call Erin my bride. She's actually my phone as my bride. And I think that if you want to talk semantics in that term, in English terms alone, um, you're not just a bride one day. That's a term that's given, like this is Anna Paul's bride. If we were to go back into like, you know, legal terms or cultural terms of bride and groom and stuff like that. But I hear what you're saying in terms of the the pomp and circumstance of being a bride, that there's the ceremony and the reception and the party and all those things. If it helps, like I said, we're still we're not at the party yet. It's still the wedding day. It's still the wedding day.

Because the the wedding of the bride isn't complete yet, or the wedding of the bridegroom isn't complete yet.

Everything. Even though we would feel so shameful, if we turn to look at him at the stuff that we have done in the past, we turn and look at him. Just that I don't couldn't look at him. We had to hide behind a book.

God is the most difficult thing. He's not the same thing. He's just wanting to come back, but yeah.

Yeah. Yeah, I think that there's the intimate understanding of each other, and I think there's that understanding lived out. They're both sometimes I think we can get stuck in the interpersonal relationship in being the bride, that we lose the call to be the bride. You know what I mean? We can get individualistic in that role. When that role there is a deeply personal aspect to it that's important because it's where you live out what the call of the bride actually is through that intimate individual place, but you gotta have both. I think you gotta have both. Yeah. All right. I want to just leave us with a little bit. I have I made these activate cards for you guys. If you want to take them home, it just gives a little recap of what we talked about tonight, and then just the three practical things to do this week. First one is just every day spend five to ten minutes sitting with him. Don't pray, don't do anything, just sit and be and breathe. Uh, spend time just identifying places where you need his resurrection power to touch your heart and go out with a goal to tell someone about him every day. Tell someone about him every day. That's what advances the kingdom, that's what it means for you to live out being the bride. You know. I don't know about so much anymore, but when we first got married, Aaron loved telling people she was married. So just remember the bride doesn't just receive life, she carries it and she gives it. You're not just forgiven, you are part of a living bride. The bride is alive just as much as the bridegroom is alive. And that same spirit that raised him from the dead, it lives in you. So live it. Live it. Let's um let's pray and see what happens. Jesus, thank you that you've called us your own. Thank you that you knew the price to be paid and you paid it. Thank you that you went to the grave so we wouldn't have to. Lord, and thank you that you came back, you rose up again on the third day, so that we can be alive with you. Father, would you show us how to be your bride? Would you show us what it means to be your bride?
