Waiting can feel like a closed door, but Sarah’s story shows how delay can become the doorway to delight. We walk through her journey from skepticism to joy, exploring the ache of unfulfilled promise, the pressure that led to Hagar and Ishmael, and the mercy that refused to let failure have the final word. Along the way, we unpack why trying to speed up God’s plan backfires, how faith matures in the unseen years, and what it means to turn anxious laughter into grateful praise.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do I respond when God’s promises feel delayed or impossible?
  • What doubts might God want to turn into joyful laughter in my life?

Welcome & Anchor Verse

Hodaiah

Hello everyone, this is Hodaiah of the Ordinary Doing Extraordinary Podcast. And with me, as always, my wife, Dominique.

Dominique

What's up? What's up, y'all?

Hodaiah

As always, it's such a blessing to do these discussions with you all. Today we'll be diving into episode 5, Heroes of Faith series. And what we're gonna cover today, we're gonna cover the life of Sarah. Dominique's gonna be leading us out in this one. So, with that, as y'all know, let's get it. Let's go. Let's get it. Let's do this thing. Let's do it. We're gonna start off with our anchor verse, which comes from Hebrews 11:11. I'm gonna be reading from CSB, which is the Christian Standard Bible. And as always, it's fine for you guys to read from whichever translation that you prefer. Here we go. By faith, even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she considered that the one who had promised was faithful.

Dominique

All right. Thank you so much for our introduction and anchor verse there. We're gonna go ahead and go into

Summary of Sarah's Life

Dominique

the summary of Sarah's story. Now I'm gonna mention the scriptures. Some of them are quite long, so we're not gonna read them out, but you can go back and take a look at them throughout the week. So starting with Genesis 12, verse 1 through 9, God calls Sarah's husband, Abraham, to leave their land, leave their relatives, and go to a land that he would reveal to them as they went. So this is where Sarah's story begins. Abraham set out from the land of Haran to go to Canaan in obedience to God's command. And we see in Genesis 15, verses 1 through 6, they both struggled with the fact that they had no children. They did not expect children in their advanced age. God promised Abraham an heir and that his offspring would be numerous. Abraham believed. Now, this is in contrast to Sarah's response later, which we will talk about. In Genesis 16, we see where doubt and fear began to take over. They were old and they were tired of waiting around. So they tried to force God's hand and his plan by having Sarah's maidservant, Hagar, marry Abraham and have a child with him. Hagar got pregnant, surprise, surprise, and began to despise Sarah. Sarah responded by mistreating Hagar, which led to Hagar running away. Hagar did come back and submit to Sarah, but eventually Sarah would send her and her son Ishmael away in Genesis 21. But God would still provide for them since Ishmael was Abraham's seed. Now it's important to point out that the descendants of Hagar and Abraham's son did become enemies of Israel. We see that mentioned in Psalm 83, 4 through 6. Wow. And it says here, they say, Come, let's wipe them out as a nation so that Israel's name will no longer be remembered. For they have conspired with one mind. They form an alliance against you, the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, and it just continues on listing Israel's enemies. So you saw Ishmaelites were a part of that list. So they were enemies of Israel. Now all of this could have been avoided if Sarah and Abraham hadn't tried to force the hand of God. This moment teaches us to be obedient to God's will and not try to force any outcomes. Sometimes you can cause unnecessary circumstances, conflicts, situations, all because of disobedience. You find yourself having to fix situations and deal with stress that you wouldn't even have if you had just remained obedient.

Hodaiah

Right.

Dominique

So we're going to talk a little bit about that in a moment. Now, continuing with the summary, Sarah's actions show unbelief and doubt, but eventually Sarah's faith would grow. Now in Genesis 17 and 18, God reiterated his promise to Abraham and Sarah. Now even Abraham laughed at this promise in Genesis 17, 17. This is where we see that. It sounded absurd for an old couple in their 90s and close to 100 years old to have a child biologically. Yeah. So three divine visitors come to Abraham. And here's a theory. Possibly these three divine visitors were the pre-incarnate Christ and two angels. That's something to research if you want to dig into that. But these visitors come to Abraham. They tell Abraham that Sarah will have a son within a year. Now, Sarah overheard this, and just like Abraham, she laughed. We see that in Genesis 18, verse 12. She said, After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I have delight? So I guess God was tired of all the laughing. He's like, Am I a comedian or something?

Hodaiah

I ain't playing.

Dominique

I ain't playing.

Hodaiah

Come on.

Dominique

Right. And he came to Abraham and he said, Why did Sarah laugh? Is anything impossible for the Lord? Now, Sarah's laugh was doubt-filled. But Sarah laughed again in Genesis 21 when she actually bore Isaac, but that time it was laughter of joyful amazement. By the time the promise was fulfilled, she had come to trust God as faithful. Now in Genesis 21, the Lord kept his promise to Sarah and Abraham despite their struggle to believe for a son. Now, ironically, the Lord told Abraham that they would name their son Isaac. Now, guess what, y'all? Isaac means he laughs.

Hodaiah

Y'all! God, he's got a sense of humor.

Dominique

Right. So in a funny way, every time they said Isaac's name, they remember how they laughed at God's promise. Isn't that something?

Hodaiah

God said, You're gonna laugh at me. I got something for that.

Dominique

I'm gonna laugh at you. Who got the last laugh?

Hodaiah

Every time you say his name. Remember that? You remember that time you doubted?

Dominique

Yeah, yeah. I think that is so hilarious. But yeah,

Faith in Action

Dominique

so that that is our summary of Sarah's life. So we're gonna move into our faith in action section. Now, Sarah's faith grew over time. It wasn't instant or easy. She had to slowly work her way up to belief. Despite her initial doubt, Sarah slowly began to move towards faith.

Hodaiah

When Isaac was born, her laughter of disbelief became laughter of fulfillment.

Dominique

Yes, absolutely.

Faith Challenges

Dominique

Now, here are our faith challenges, right? So her age brought deep doubt. No one had ever seen a woman her age bear a child. And that's understandable. I mean, even nowadays, it's not common for a 90-year-old woman to have a child. So when the divine visitors confirmed the promise, Sarah laughed in disbelief. Another challenge here is that she and Abraham waited about 25 years, y'all.

Hodaiah

Wow.

Dominique

For God's promise of a child to be fulfilled. That's a long time, which led to doubt and discouragement.

Hodaiah

Understandable.

Dominique

Yeah. And they were already up there in age when God told Abraham of the promise. So that was a very challenging wait.

Hodaiah

After so many years of waiting, Sarah tried to fulfill God's promise in her own way, giving Hagar to Abraham. Her desire to help God's plan highlights the temptation to take control rather than trust. Abraham, as the spiritual leader, should have reminded her to trust God's promise, but he went along with it instead. So something I just want to touch on here. Let's pay attention. Let's focus on the response of Abraham to Sarah's request to have a child through her maidservant Hagar. Abraham did not object to Sarah's request, he instead agreed to Sarah's suggestion. If we think back to the Garden of Eden, Adam, the first man, was given authority and a responsibility which he neglected and instead agreed with his wife, Eve, to eat the forbidden fruit. And from this neglect of his duty, the fall of man happened, and the world fell into sin. As men, we carry authority. God loves men and women equally, but God made men first. Being that God made men first, men are supposed to be leaders. We are supposed to be a spiritual covering for our wives and for our children. Now ultimately, God is the covering for us all. Let's not get it twisted. But God has given men the authority to be leaders, and as leaders, we should be obedient to the will of the Lord and be a spiritual covering over our households. Just as Adam did not correct Eve in the garden when she told him to eat the forbidden fruit, Abraham did not correct Sarah when she suggested taking matters into her own hands to have a child. When God returned to the garden, he did not say, Eve, where are you? He said, Adam, where are you?

Dominique

Absolutely. That is a very powerful context there that you added.

Hodaiah

Thank you.

Spiritual Lessons & Takeaways

Dominique

Yeah. Now let's talk a little bit about the spiritual lessons and takeaways. So our first one here: hold on to God's promises, even if it doesn't make sense in the moment. If God promised it, it will come to pass.

Hodaiah

He is who he is.

Dominique

Yes.

Hodaiah

Our next point faith can grow over time. Don't be discouraged if your initial response isn't perfect. God is patient, understanding, and faithful to strengthen your faith. Next, don't try to force God's plan. Taking matters into your own hands can create pain and conflict. But God's way is always best. Let me ask you, my brothers and sisters, have you ever become impatient with a situation or circumstance and tried to take it into your own hands? Have you ever gotten what you believe to be a revelation from God, but then in time became impatient with the process?

Dominique

Yes, yes.

Hodaiah

Sarah received God's promise for a child, but then tried to fulfill the promise in her own way. You see, Sarah became impatient. What she was seeing in the physical just was not adding up and making any sense. I think we all have tried to take matters into our own hands at some point in our lives. I personally can admit that I have done this not just sometimes, but many times. It can be difficult keeping faith, but the requirement, remember, is faith. Faith, you must have faith. Even if just the size of a mustard seed, you must trust that God is who he says he is and that he is faithful. For example, before David became a king, he was a shepherd boy. And check out this important detail. Here it comes! Here comes some fire.

Dominique

Okay.

Hodaiah

It's that time. Some absolute dynamite.

Dominique

Dynomite!

Hodaiah

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's do it. You know I've got to have my little hype moment.

Dominique

Okay, let's go.

Hodaiah

David was anointed king by the prophet Samuel.

Dominique

Okay.

Hodaiah

And after being anointed the next king of Israel, David did not go straight to the throne and start ruling. Instead, he returned back to his duties as a shepherd boy and being considered the least in his household. David was anointed king, but had to be patient for multiple years, possibly even 15 years before he would finally receive the throne of Israel. Hallelujah. So just like David, Abraham and Sarah had to wait many years for the promise to be fulfilled. The Lord is always on time. He never misses his mark. Be obedient to his divine will, even if the circumstances don't make sense to you. And I just want to this scripture that came to mind. I just want you guys to meditate on this one. Proverbs 1921. This states, many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that shall prevail. Boom! There goes that dynamite.

Dominique

Dynamite. Yes, sir.

Hodaiah

Okay, Dom, I'm done. You can go, you can close this thing out, Dom. Take it away.

Dominique

Yeah, well, we appreciate that. That is such a good point that you made there. So that was awesome. Thank you.

Closing Thought

Hodaiah

Yeah.

Dominique

So we're gonna have our closing thought here. Sarah, she was an ordinary woman facing an impossible promise. But her faith grew as she learned to trust God's word. Her story reminds us that even in our doubts and struggles, God can turn ordinary lives into extraordinary testimonies. When we trust God's faithfulness, he uses our ordinary obedience to bring about his extraordinary plan.

Hodaiah

Absolutely.

Dominique

Yes, yes.

Hodaiah

And guys, uh now we're coming to the end here, and you know we gotta finish with some prayer. We love y'all. Let's go ahead, let's close out with this

Prayer

Hodaiah

prayer. Hallelujah, hallelujah.

Dominique

Yes,

Hodaiah

Praise him,

Dominique

Praise him,

Hodaiah

Praise him. Dear Lord, we lift your name up high. Let you be exalted, Lord. We come to you with humble hearts. Let our hearts' desires be aligned with your divine will, Lord. Father God, I pray for all of our listeners. I pray for my wife and myself, Lord. Please continue to give us the faith to speak your word boldly. I pray, Lord, that as this ministry continues, let ODE ministries touch the hearts of believers and let those believers go out and stand boldly on the gospel of truth. Let these believers know that though they may be ordinary people, through the mercy of Jesus, they can do extraordinary feats. Lord, I pray forgiveness for our enemies and for anyone we may have personally sinned against. Lord, even if our faith is just the size of a mustard seed, let us even have the faith, the size of Sarah's, which led to a miracle in the mighty, natural, and majestic name. Amen.

Dominique

Amen. Amen. Thank you so much for that awesome prayer. Now we're going to finish off with our two reflection questions

Reflection Questions & Outro

Dominique

here. Um, you know, we do this every time. So here we go. These are questions you can think about throughout the week. The first one, how do I respond when God's promises feel delayed or impossible? The next question: what doubts might God want to turn into joyful laughter later in my life? Thank you all so much for listening to episode five. We are so thankful for your time, and we hope that this episode has blessed you. All right. We love y'all.

Hodaiah

Of course, we absolutely love y'all.

Dominique

Yes.

Hodaiah

But next time, you're gonna be joining us in episode six of the Heroes of faith series.
