This week Topher Mac runs through a curated list of movies coming soon to a cinema near you! If He’s mentioning it, it’s probably worth watching (except those 2 or 3 he definitely thumbs downed).
All right, now this is the show. It's the beginning. And this is a monumentistic because this is the first annual. The first annual summer movie preview. And I am Topher Mack with Shadows at Shine, a movie podcast. And we are here today to present to you the next few months of movies. That's what we're gonna do. Yep. I hope that each and every one of you guys are gonna enjoy this. Let's get it started. Alright, so we're gonna do things a little bit different this week, with it being such a big uh episode. I'm gonna do all the box office stuff at the end of this episode. Uh I wanna first real quick tell you I saw a couple of uh movies worth talking about, and then we're gonna jump right into the movie preview. Uh I saw a fantastic documentary about Buster Keaton. Yes, Buster Keaton, and I will undoubtedly be talking about this later on. It's called The Great Buster, a Celebration. It's a 2018 documentary, and I liked it a lot. I also saw Ringle and The Ring, that is the Japanese film that The Ring was based on, and then The Ring, which is the American version that most of you would have heard of. Yeah. Um, I thought that they were okay. They're not bad, they're not really uh I liked the Japanese version better. I think it might be worth doing a deep dive on that at some point. Uh so I'll leave it for that. Alright, let's get into uh, you know, I wish that I had the technology to be able to have some sort of fancy musical introduction, uh, but instead I just have the ability to improvise. So here we go.
SPEAKER_01Summer movie preview, it's time summer preview, summer, summer preview, summer movie preview.
SPEAKER_00Okay, that's enough. That's definitely enough. Look, I thought that it would be a good idea uh with a very busy summer. This year, a lot of filmmakers that I like are releasing uh movies, including um some of my favorites, and the ones that aren't releasing are actively working on movies. Uh most of my living directors have something uh in the works, so that's fantastic uh fantastic news. But we're here to talk strictly about the summer. Now I'm going to call the summer from May to the end of August. That is that is what I'm calling summer season for the movies. And you know, we uh we'll get into how the weekend went, but we already had a strong spot. Uh our for the official welcome to summer uh premiere was Devilware's Prada. Um, and we'll talk about all that stuff later. We're gonna jump into the preview, starting with this weekend's uh looking interesting. See, this would be one of those times where you actually get to start choosing what movie you're gonna watch, and not just do I want to go to the movies, but what do I want to watch of the movies? Because there are three movies coming up this weekend that I'm already like, yeah, okay, okay. And they're three totally different movies. This is uh May 8th, Notable Drops. Mortal Kombat 2, the R-rated sequel to the R-rated uh first Mortal Kombat. Um, this one has Johnny Cage in it, it looks interesting. Um, I also love the fact that later this year we're gonna be getting a Street Fighter movie, but that's much later this year. Might even be next year. I haven't seen the the date on that one yet. I know it's not this summer though. Uh Mortal Kombat 2, I'm hearing good things so far. Um nobody's seen it uh that I know personally, but I've been hearing good things through uh places that I source information. This next movie is a movie that I am very excited about, and it's like guilty pleasure excitement. It's called The Sheep Detectives, and it looks frickin' fascinating, okay? It really is not uh oh, look at me being distracted over here. It's not like I'm a professional. Uh the sleep detectives is this weird, like has like a babe feeling to it. Talking sheep who get read to by a shepherd. Shepherd uh dies, and the detectives are like, it's not a big deal. And the sheep are like, uh, Home Dude was murdered, we're gonna solve this mystery. That's right, Animal Kingdom gonna come after you. What's wild is it's rated PG, but like it just looks good. It looks like I'm gonna watch that movie and feel good. And you know what I'd would love to do? Feel good for for you know a couple of hours. It'd be nice. Here's the third movie coming out this weekend that had me going, uh first, I am surprised I'm interested in this. It is a movie, uh, I mean a music documentary film similar to what the Aeristor did, uh, but this one is for Billy Eilish Eilish? Irish? Eilish. I can't speak. Billy Eilish hit me hard and soft. Uh the reason I'm talking about and the reason it grabbed my attention is they they had James Cameron work on this film. That's right. Billy Eilish and uh can you tell that I'm still sick a little bit? Uh Billy Eilish and James Cameron co-directed this PG 13 movie uh that's coming out this week. And all three of these movies, well, I would say that they're gonna deliver, but I I'm still licking my wounds about how wrong I was about uh over your dead body, which was a good movie that nobody went to watch. Oh man. Uh so anime fans, hey, rejoice! On May 10th, you have a uh anime called Labyrinth coming. I hear tell by friends of mine who like anime that this is something to check out. I continue to dislike anime, I won't be going to that one. Um then on May 15th, a film that like is starting to grow on me is Obsession. It's a Bloom House film, and uh it looks interesting, it's a cool concept. Um I I wanna watch it, and that same weekend, one of my favorite uh one of my top 20 directors, Guy Ritchie, is dropping in the gray. This has Henry Cavill in it, but it's starring Jake Gyllenhaal, who just gave us uh greatness not long ago. Um it's uh what is that Jake Gyllenhaal? I confuse Jake Jill Alright, so here's my like really bad thing. I confuse Jake Gyllenhaal with another actor all the time. And now I'm over here having like a crisis so much so that I'm literally gonna fucking uh go there's the F-word. Uh I'm really gonna Google it because who was in Project Hell Mary? Um okay, yes, Ryan Gosling is the person that I confuse it with Jake Gillenhall. I was about to be like, they just had these movies. I I fell, I lose. Oh, that's embarrassing. Anyways, in the gray looks like it's gonna be a really good spy movie. I guess Guy Ritchie wasn't allowed to direct a James Bond film, so he said, Alright, I'll just direct a James Bond film that's not a James Bond film. So there you go. Hey, May 22nd, Star Wars Mandalorian and Groot. That's a PG 13 film coming uh on that particular occasion. Then we got two horror films. Uh, Passenger gave me a jump scare, an effective jump scare in the trailer. Uh, the first time I saw that. Um Corporate Retreat also coming out. That's an interesting idea for a movie as well. You know, this is just May, and I've already named one, two, three, uh, four, five, six, seven. I named nine movies, but eight of these movies are movies that I think are interesting enough to check out. So I'm feeling good. Hey, are movies back? You let me know. Hit me up Instagram at Shadows That Shine, hit me up on Facebook, um, we have uh Shadows That Shine, we have a page there. You should follow us. Um, you know, let me know how you feel about all this. And um, I will let you know what June is looking like because we start June strong uh with Scary Movie. Now, that's the Wayne Brothers coming back to the Scary Movie franchise. Uh it should be it should be really freaking hilarious. The trailer is funny, so I'm sure that uh they're gonna deliver. Now, uh the same weekend, there's another movie that I have to admit I think is gonna bomb, but maybe I'm wrong. And that would be Masters of the Universe. It's a Jared Leto movie. Uh, not director, but the actor uh is Jared Leto in it, and I don't um I feel like he's box off his poison, and we'll know for sure after this. We'll know for sure. Hey, June 12th. Speaking about great film directors, Steven Spielberg is giving us disclosure day. Now, if you didn't know, let me remind you. Not only do I not like anime, I'm not really big on sci-fi films. But I'm gonna check this out because it's Spielberg and I trust him. Uh maybe it'll be good. He's surprised me before with stuff I didn't think I was gonna like. That he's something about his sentimentality that really works for me. Uh but that same weekend we have two other movies coming out. Uh one is called The Fuhrer Fuhrer? Fury? The Furious. Take that, my own handwriting. Uh The Furious is uh it's an action film and it looks interesting. But the movie. The comedy movie of the year is very likely to be in this June 12th release, a movie called Stop That Train. One of uh one of the funniest trailers I've ever seen. And if the movie is half as funny as I thought the trailer was, it's gonna be a great time. It's directed by Adam Schenckman. If you watch the hairspray uh remake, that is Adam Schenckman's work. Hey, June 19th, another Toy Story movie, Toy Story 5. You know, if that's your thing, it's there for you, and I hope that you enjoy it. I mean, the first three Toy Story movies are incredible. Um y'all uh know I don't like animated films very much, uh, and I still feel like the trilogy is one of the greatest trilogies of all time. It's three incredible movies. They work independent, they work together, it's fantastic. Uh four was I was made to watch four with a good friend of mine, uh, actually friends, it was a whole group. It was okay. And Toy Story 5, I might watch a few guys use gays. We'll see. Because that same week, uh that same weekend we're getting a really interesting gay horror film called Leviticus, and I'm like, yo, when I first like saw the trailer, uh when I first saw the poster and the name, I was like, ugh, Bible epic, ugh. And then I watched the trailer and I went, oh, oh, it's like shades of Matthew Shepard over there with the the barbed wire fence. That's a deep cut for any of you guys that keep up with uh uh politics for uh gay rights or for theater, which is in my case the reason I know about it. Um Matthew Shepard uh was murdered, and then they did a play called The Laramie Project to uh try to bring more awareness to try to cause change, which it did eventually lead to the Matthew Shepard Act. Um yeah. And uh pivoting away from that, the not a very good pivot. The death of Robin Hood. I had to talk about death immediately after that, didn't I? Hey, look, this movie looks so good from the trailer, like it looks like it's gonna be surprisingly good. Does that make sense? Like, I'm not 100% convinced it's gonna be great, but there's a lot of elements there that seem like it's gonna work, and what they're saying in the trailer makes me think this could be a fantastic story. So, again, all of those movies, June 19th. On June 26th, oh, it's gonna be a super release. We got two, two fantastic movies drop in. Two movies I'm extremely excited to watch. Uh, what do I call this weekend? Uh, do I call it super ass? Or do I call it uh um Jack Girl? Obviously, we're calling this weekend super ass. Uh that would be Jackass Best and Last and Super Girl. These movies uh speak for themselves. Superman is the first time I ever cared about that. Uh and I'm talking about James Gunn's Superman. First time I ever cared about that character, ever. I've never liked that character. And he did such a good job with that movie that now I care about the character, and now I want to see what's next for Supergirl, for the whole DCU, in fact. Let's see if the DCU can keep winning, which I think it has been so far. Uh, and of course, Jackass uh best and last is supposed to be the final Jackass film. Um they're old enough that I believe it might actually be. Then we get into July. Right away, July 1st, Minions and Monsters. For those of you who like the the minion movies, I saw the trailer, it looks cute. If that's your thing, it's not mine, but hey, take your kids, they're gonna love it. July 3rd. This year is the 250th uh anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and therefore we call it uh the birthday of the country. And so if you're one of the five people that feel uh proud to be an American right now, controversial thing to say, uh Young Washington might be for you. That's gonna be a PG 13 film released on July 3rd. It looked eh, it looked okay, like it looked like something that I would probably rather watch at home than on a streaming service, and not something I'd need to go to the movie theater to see. Um but it's there if you want it. Now let's jump ahead a week. Um July 10th is going to give us that abomination known as Moana live action. Um but it's also gonna give us the good uh abomination, Evil Dead Burn. And we might be doing an Evil Dead episode around that time. Uh I've been in talks with uh John Paul Edmondson, and it would be nice to and I uh I don't know if I remembered to mention I saw that movie for the first time uh about a week ago, and then here we are. Here it is, the moment, the moment of the entire year. This is going to be the cinema moment. This movie is so anticipated by so many people that no one is trying to compete with it. Everyone said, book that, we're not running up against this guy. And up until a few days ago, not even a whole week ago, a few days ago, nobody was going to compete the following week against this. Like the following week's the movie that was scheduled to release isn't trying to compete. Like, it's a totally different vibe. Um, what's July 17th, Topher? The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan. Oh, and did you see he got his funky ass on a little program called The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Uh hey, little tangent. Did you know that um when the late show was hosted by David Letterman, that David Letterman made fun of me on the on there? I was on it uh briefly for seconds as he made fun of me specifically. Um that's a story for another day, though. And uh if you guys subscribe and pester me on the social medias, not my personal ones, my my friends, on the Shadows That Shine one, then I'll talk about it on here. Uh the Odyssey is gonna be so good. I can't wait. Uh, the trailer that they showed hidden in the middle of this interview uh with Christopher Nolan and um Stephen Colbert, bang, flipping tat. Oh man, oh this is gonna be good. I was nervous at first because the teaser trailer didn't really have me excited, but I was like, it's Nolan, I trust him. Well now, now I'm getting it's gonna be good. July 24th, Hades Town, way down, way down town, way down under the ground. Um Hades Town. They filmed the I believe the English uh production of it, the the one that they're doing in London, and now they're gonna put it on American screens. I saw this show, it was the first show that I saw um coming back from the year that didn't happen. I enjoy I love that soundtrack to begin with, and I enjoyed that show thoroughly. So this could be this could be good. Could be good. That's why I'm mentioning it. Hey, jump forward July 31st, and we got Superman brand new day. That movie. Should be good. I have uh been talking about how ugly I think it looks, but I don't care because the story looks interesting, and I love the characters, and I can't wait to revisit them. This could be um one of the great movies of the year. Now, we get into August, and August 7th is gonna offer some weird stuff. August 7th is gonna give us a remake of a of an 80s horror slasher. I think they're doing something totally different with it though. It's Ice Cream Man. Ice Cream Man, that's the one that you uh hey look. I was talking to a friend about it earlier today. In fact, I mentioned it to him, and he said, What? Why? And then I said two words after it. I said, Eli Roth. And he goes, Oh, oh yeah, that makes sense. It's probably gonna be good. I don't know if he said that. I said it's probably gonna be good because it's Eli Roth. Um, that same weekend, we're getting Supertroopers 3. Woohoo! That'll be a fun one for sure. Supertroopers 2 was okay. Of course, Super Troopers 1, fantastic. Um, if you've never seen it and you like to laugh, you need to watch it. Supertroopers 2 is adequate, it's not bad, it doesn't really um add. I think I think they're gonna course correct with the third one. I don't think they would have done another one if they didn't think they could top. And uh so I'm excited. August 14th. We have uh two films. One uh, I mean, I don't know if you guys have figured this out. There's actually a lot more movies coming out over the summer. I'm not talking about every one of them. I cherry-picked some, some of them uh I'm very excited to watch, some of them I think you guys that y'all would like to watch. Um and this weekend is an example of that. The first one is the end of Oak Street. Uh I bet other people are gonna really like this movie. I'll probably go watch it if I got time. Um, but it's not my kind of thing off the top of my head. The movie that follows it. I mean, or the movie from the same weekend, the book of war, is not uh something I'm excited about, but it might be something if you're into that young uh Washington movie, you might be into the Book of War. It seems like it's a political thriller. Um, it has to do with uh how close we came to World War III, specifically with the Cuban uh missile crisis, and you know, we'll see. And that brings us to the end of the season. The end of um the summer. The last movie we're gonna end our summer with before we have to go back, uh, before the kiddos gotta go back to school, and the tofers gotta go back to um nothing changes for me, except that I get closer to my uh favorite time of the year. Um on August 28th, we finally get Coyote versus Acme. Yep. Coyote versus Acme finally coming to the movie theater after they said it wouldn't happen, and yet here we are. Yeah, buddy. Yeah, buddy. Um, um, um, um. How many times can I say um today? Just wanted to see if you're still paying attention. It was a lot. Uh that sums up this. Uh so I you know, I I guess I should say in general, this is seeming like a very strong summer. Uh, I only talked about movies coming to the cinema. Uh, Netflix is going to release a movie. Uh it is going to be written, or it was written by Quentin Tarantino. It stars Brad Pitt, and it is directed not by Quentin Tarantino, but David Fincher, who is another one of my favorite uh directors of all time. Um, he's in the top 20 as well. He he he good. He good. Well, there you have it. Now that's not the end of the podcast, but that is the end of the summer preview. I'll be back in just a moment. You're listening uh to Topher Mac, and you're listening to Shadows at Shine, a movie podcast. And we're back. Hey, it's time to talk about the box office. The box office. Yes, I am Topher Mac. This is Shadows at Shine, and um now we're talking about last week's box office results. Those dates, May 1st to May 3rd, uh bring good news because movie attendance is up. They are uh the profits for the overall gross uh was up 11.8%. That's a hundred and seventy point five million dollars weekend total. Uh that's all the movies that report to box office mojo. Um, I got no problem telling you guys that that's where I get a lot of my information. Not all of it, but a lot of it. So ah this is uh this is a story of a girl. Uh who did our top five? Oh. Oh my. Who did our top? There we go. Hey, uh, for a second there, I lost my notes. I'm not gonna lie. And you got to be there for it. Hey, we still record live to tape, and times like now, that's not a good thing. Thank you for being patient with me. May 1st through 3rd, our number one ranking movie was The Devil Wears Prada 2. Yeah, that little bit of controversy uh coming into it, I thought was gonna affect it more, but it didn't. It it made $76.7 million dollars. Um, that would be the domestic gross. Um 76.7. Uh internationally, it brought in 156.6 for a total of 233.3 million dollars, not thousand. Uh that was a PG 13 film motion uh Walt Disney Studios. Um because I'm traveling uh at the moment, I don't have everything noted the way that I normally do, so there'll be a little chaos in this. Michael, as we spoke about before, Michael is a Lionsgate release and it got second place, adding $54.4 million uh to a massive gross. That brings its totals domestically to $184.2, internationally $246 million for a total of $430.3 million dollars. Uh it's it's doing well. And it is uh there are people that think that it's going to overcome Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest uh grossing highest grossing uh music biopic. So we'll see. Uh a very strong weekend uh head could dethrone. It's gonna be a very, very competitive week uh for movies, and that's probably a good thing, I think. Um that's my theory at least. Super Mario Galaxy movie, probably last time it's gonna be on this list this list for a while, $12.1 million dollars that it added to its massive numbers. Uh that's 402.7. That's the domestic gross that it now has. 494.6 for a total of 897.2 million dollars. Universal Pictures has got to be happy with themselves over that. Uh Project Hell Mary still hanging in there, 8.5 million dollars that it brought in. Uh bringing its totals now um 318.3, 320.1 for a total of 638.4 million dollars. Hokum. Hokum was the uh new release that I was curious what it was gonna do. And my curiosity led me to a place where we found the answer, and the answer was it did six point four million dollars. Uh it only internationally made uh uh five hundred and sixty seven thousand dollars basically total worldwide gross six point I mean basically seven million dollars it brought in essentially um that's not bad, you know, it's not bad here talking about box office. Here's the story, in case you're wondering, Animal Foam bombed. You know, I thought that that movie was gonna do something, and I guess it got bad reviews, and it just never clicked for the audiences because it only brought in 3.3 million dollars. That's an angel release, and um it's gonna need a miracle to make its money back, and that makes me feel bad for uh Andy Circus. Um Circus is not his last there's no way that's his last name. Um, the guy who plays uh Schminganal. Uh I'm fired. I'm firing myself right now. Anyways, um, you know, another one that was worth mentioning because I don't think it's gonna be mentioned again, the drama is worldwide total ended up being 116.17 million, uh 116.7 million uh worldwide, and I'm I just that's impressive. It was worth mentioning. Uh I continue to be sad that Over Your Dead Body only brought in two two million, and uh that's the box office this week, and I appreciate that uh you sat here and listened to me talk about it. It matters a lot to me, might not matter a lot to you, but it matters a lot to me. I love the business end of it, and you're really gonna start to see why as the summer unfolds, because you have competitive weekends like what's about to happen that used to be common ground all the time in 2019. Um now we have this exciting time where it's like there are three movies that are gonna hit this weekend, and they're competing with three movies that are still hitting, and that's of course Devil's Wear uh Devil Wear Prada 2. That's Michael, and uh and that's all which Michael, by the way, only dropped like 40%, which is strong, it's a strong uh showing this is all good news. We need the movie business, it needs to be making more money than we're making. And um go go watch a movie. I mean, literally, at this point, there's something for everybody. Uh we drop our podcast on Wednesday. Uh that means Thursday night by Thursday night, Friday at the latest. Whatever you want is there somewhere for you to take a look at and enjoy. And I hope that you do. And I appreciate you and your support. And you're you're gonna be here next week. I'm gonna try to have a co-host next week and tackle a good deep dive issue. What's it gonna be? I'll never tell you. Uh way to make things weird, Topher Gall. The Odyssey is coming.
SPEAKER_01Yay! I can't wait.
SPEAKER_00I'm Topher Mack, and you're listening to Shadows at Shine, a movie podcast. Bye.
