In this episode of the Elements series, Heather transitions from the fire element to explore the earth element, focusing on how modalities (cardinal, fixed, and mutable) shape a birth chart and how earth energy operates in both its light and shadow expressions.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) represent the tangible, physical world. They are deeply connected to the five senses, gravity, and material reality.

Hi everyone, welcome to Seventh Health Astrology Podcast. I'm Heather, and I'm here to talk about the messy, beautiful, and sometimes exhausting world of relationships. Well, hello everyone. Welcome back. Is it just me or is this summer flying by really fast and super busy and ridiculously hot? I mean, come on. I shouldn't complain living in San Diego. It's nothing compared to other parts of the country and the world. We are dealing with some humidity that this little Cali girl does not know how to handle. Nor do I like it. Nope. Nope. Humidity can stay in the east. Sorry everyone. I know East Coasters know their humidity, but these California-born people, we don't know how to handle this sticky, muggy weather. It's it's awful. It's awful. For anybody out there struggling with this wacky weather, please be safe and drink water, not soda or those other drinks, especially the energy drinks when it's this hot. Our bodies need water. Be safe out there, everyone. There's one thing I forgot to mention when I was talking about the fire elements, is that each of the three elements in our chart, sorry, four elements in our chart will be in different modalities. There's only three modalities, that's where I got messed up, sorry. Meaning that every element in our chart has three different modalities. The three modalities are cardinal, fixed, and mutable. Cardinal energy is the go-go start new things. Fixed is just that it's fixed, doesn't move. And mutable is adaptable energy that you learn from starting something new in the cardinal, then went into the fixed and worked on whatever you started, and the mutable energies, which we are adapting to what we started, how we mastered it, and now we will use it. Cardinal energies, which are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. They are the energy that gets us up and moves and gets shit done. They're the action energy we express. It's always beginning something new. Okay, we have an idea. Hmm, that sounds like it might be tough, but you know what? I'm up for the challenge because I want this and I need to create action to get what I want. That's cardinal energy. Fixed modalities are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Fixed energies, like I said, are just that. They're fixed. Stubbornness is key when it comes to fixed energies. But the stubbornness and determination to understand what you started is needed to begin to master what you began. The mutable energy is Gemini, Virgo, Sag, and Pisces, and is the energy that you become adaptable with. Let's try this when you look at a birth chart. Let's use Aries as an example because Aries is the first sign and it's easy to visualize and it's an easy way to understand this. Okay, you have Aries in the first house. So you're, you know, you're an initiator, a leader, you take action in your pursuits. Now let's say you got a grand idea and you just began a new project. That's the first house. The second house is the area where you will be fixed and determined to get whatever it is done, master it, make sure it's efficient, and better yet, making you some money. Okay, you work diligently on your grand idea. You made it happen. Now you move it into the third house of Gemini. And you now take what you started in the first house and what you built and mastered in the second house, and now you will take this product out into the world or skill you have just created into the world through the third house. Now you are adaptable to network and show off what you created. You then repeat four houses four through six, seven through ten, and nine through twelve in the same way. You just go through your chart. You can look at your chart and see where your first house is and work from there. I think it's really fun actually. So when you're thinking about something like a transit, let's say you have Mars, for an example. Okay, you've got Mars going through your first house and you started something, you initiated it. And then you're gonna take it into your next house and you're gonna work on it. And then you're gonna take it into the following house after that, which is two signs over, and you're gonna be adaptable to angles in our charts, which are super important. If you have carnal angles, meaning you have Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn in either first, fourth, seventh, or tenth house, you can be trailblazers, pioneers, people who take action and go for what they want. They turn their ideas into action, but because they are carnal, they don't have that fixed energy to follow through. If your angles in your chart are fixed, then your first, fourth, seventh, and tenth houses will be completely different from the carnal energy. The fixed angles are what I find to inhibit people from sometimes really enjoying their lives. Based on signs and planets in these houses, this could be people living in a home that is toxic, but at the same time, safe. I find safety is a huge for fixed energy. They will not move unless the road paved ahead is safe and they have been reassured that that road is safe. Okay, they need like double. They may need a ton of experience before they can see that road ahead. Meaning they may run into obstacles that you know, they may get stuck in patterns, but they can miss these obstacles that are being repeated. Instead of moving forward, they stay put out of fear of the unknown. Fixed angles, I find, are the hardest people to help at times because they want to be helped, yet there is this dirty word that I despise. And fixed energies has an abundance of. And that word is stubbornness. Their stubborn nature and fear keep them from truly living their life they want. In my studies in psychology, stubbornness is a huge relationship killer. Thinking your way is the only way, and not listening to others' perspectives or not being adaptable, or should I even utter the word compromise? Compromise be an option? Okay, in relationships, when one person does not evolve in the relationship and their unwillingness to compromise or change is not healthy. Okay, that is not healthy relationship dynamics. Fixed doesn't like change, they like it the way it is, whether it's healthy for them or not. I have dealt with a ton of stubbornness in my life, and I am super carefree. I live in the clouds, I rearrange my furniture all the time. I can't be stuck in one place for too long. Oh my god, that's that would kill me. I am all cardinal. So stubbornness in relationships for me, it will suffocate me. I need change, and I believe that we are all evolving. That's why I'm an evolutionary astrologer, and we need to be open to evolving. We can see it in age. We evolve from all stages of life, and that goes for our relationships as well. No marriage is the same as it was 30 years ago, just as you are not the same as you were five years ago. Your relationship changes with your parents when you enter adulthood. Your relationship changes with your children when they get older. Nothing is stagnant. Nothing. We may close our eyes at night and sleep for eight hours, but guess what? The earth is still rotating 465 meters or 1,526 feet per second, roughly 1,041 miles. And the southern hemisphere is alive with people doing the same grind we do in the northern hemisphere while they are sleeping. Nothing in our world is stagnant. Next, if your angles are mutable, which are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, you will feel this adaptable energy in your first, fourth, seventh, and tenth house. You'll be flexible, adaptable, and versatile. You can be problem solvers, you have the agility to move back and forth from the cardinal and the fixed energies. You will be more adaptable to changes and circumstances than let's say that, those fixed signs. Yeah, those fixed signs really struggle with changes or unseen circumstances that come into their life. They they they just it's really hard. The reason why I stuck with these examples with the angles is because the angles of our natal chart are the foundation of our charts and our personalities. I talked about the angles in the episodes of why we choose them. If you need like a little refresher on that. So, with this said, I hope this helps as we continue through the rest of the elements series. Okay, we moved away from fire elements and we're moving on to the earth element. Earth energy for the zodiac is a blind spot for the fire element. Seeing the sign on either side of a house is our blind spot. So let's use Aries and Taurus and Pisces as an example. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. The next sign over is Taurus, an earth sign. However, there can be no aspects between these two signs that are next to each other. Well, okay, maybe an out-of-sign conjunction, but they can't really talk to each other or see each other. This is the same for Aries and Pisces. Aries cannot see what Pisces is up to. So for Taurus and Pisces, they can lack some of the fire from Aries and vice versa. Aries can lack some of what Pisces and Tauruses are doing in their energy. This is so fun to do. It's a really fun exercise to do in any area of your life. You feel that doesn't resonate. This might be why. Check to see if you have some blind spots. I have a lot of blind spots. Took me forever to finally see them. Okay. It's because I live in the clouds, you know? I yeah, whatever. You will drastically see a different temperament from fire to earth and from earth to air and air to water. Just a reminder, we are every sign, okay? Every sign. Yes, we have planets and points in other areas of our chart, but that may be more prominent than others. But we all have 12 signs in 12 houses. You know, just a little astrology side note. Astrology is not deterministic. We have free will. The chart tells your possibilities. It's your choice on how you live your life. You can have a transit coming. Let's say it's a Mars and Mercury. They are in a square, which is a tension energy. This aspect can, on the negative, be a heated argument. Now let's say it's in your first house of self and your tenth house of career. Knowing this, you go to work and there's a conflict at work with communication, and your coworkers are angry. Communication is Mercury, Mars is the aggression. You now have the free will and the tool of acknowledgement and knowing about this Mars and Mercury. You will have the free will to say what you want or keep your mouth shut. Again, free will. But the energy will be there. It's all up to you on how you use the energy. It's not deterministic. Here's another example. Every two years, we get a hard transit. Mars and Saturn come together in a conjunction. I tell myself that I will stay home and not leave the house every time this transit occurs. Every time, what do I do? I leave the damn house. This last time, it was awful. It was such a hard day. And the whole time I'm yelling at myself, why did you leave the house? Okay. The last time it was so bad. I almost got in a car accident. Someone screamed and yelled at me for her problem. It was the person who almost hit me, but again, she was screaming and yelling at me. A golfer hit his ball straight at my car and cracked my windshield. This all happened in about four hours.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Did I want to lose my shit? Yes, I did. However, I knew about this transit and I chose to be the bigger person when all these people were blindly walking this earth, not knowing of the hard energy that we were all experiencing. Because all of us were experiencing it at the same time. I knew better and, you know, I, you know, I knew better and I went out anyway. No, I will not continue to live my life in fear of a transit, but I choose my behavior instead of calling it fate. When I first learned astrology and I learned about transits, I saw how I could have solved a ton of problems in my past or known when to be quiet or when to confront someone or not. I was walking this earth blindly. Of course, I was conditioned young to believe this was all woo-woo shit. But as my spirituality grew, I was open to any and all possibilities. I mean, why wouldn't we come into this life with a blueprint of our personality? I get a lot of pushback from people close to me because a lot of my family are not like me. But I've studied astrology and my spirituality for so long, and I've read so many charts that it just proves to me every day that this is concrete. I mean, we live on a planet. Why is it so hard to believe that other planets' vibration and aspect wouldn't affect us? We are made of the stars. We know this through science. So astrology should make sense. Humans have been studying astrology for over 4,000 years, way longer than religion. The earliest written astrological texts originate in ancient Mesopotomia. We were conditioned to believe this shit is for fun or fantasy or prediction, you know, whatever. But oh, I guess we're witches, you know? But that's not what astrology is about. Okay, let's go back to Earth. That was just my little astrology tangent there, okay? If you're an Earth sign, you can struggle with this concept. Earth signs are spiritual, they are woo-woo. Two of the board members at San Diego Astrology are Tauruses. I know many Virgos who are astrologers, and believe it or not, there are Capricorns or professional astrologers. For Earth, these people need to be proven. They had to see a result, something tangible they could relate to. Earth energies do not live with their heads in the clouds. They are grounded to the earth in practicality, realism, and so on. So when an earthy person becomes super spiritual like this, it's because they most likely had something concrete to prove it to them. It was a lot easier for me. Since I was already up in the clouds anyway. Okay. Oh, so with that said, let's talk about Earth for a moment. Let's really get into the idea of what earth actually means to a human. First and foremost, there's this thing called gravity. Yep, we all feel it. We are all glued to this earth. Even if you jump out of a perfectly good airplane, yes, you will fly. Mm-hmm. Yep, you will. But eventually you will have to come back down to reality and land on the stable Earth. Earth is tangible. We can feel it with our hands and our feet. We can smell the forest, the ocean, the pine trees, the salty beach air, the jungle, the literal air we breathe to survive. It's real. We can taste the earth with the food we grow, the fish we receive from the ocean, rivers and lakes, from the game we catch. We can hear the earth through waterfalls, birds chirping, rain and thunder. We can see the earth as it is the only planet that we can actually live on. We can see the leaves on the trees, we can see the flowers blooming, we can see mountains, rolling hills, deserts, plains, lakes, oceans, rivers, the homes and businesses supplying the food and security for humans. We use what we have on Earth to close ourselves for natural products. Earth is reality, practicality, pragmatism, productivity, reliability. It analyzes, it's disciplined, it's solid, it's present and factual. See, the physical world and the observable outcomes and the material structures of life are all represented by the earth element in astrology. It controls how we establish security, anchor ourselves, and engage with our senses. Earth elements are how we build stability, security, endurance, how we tap into groundedness. Earth is structure and patience. Remember in the fire elements, there isn't a ton of patience. Again, blind spots. You'll never forget, you'll never look at a chart again and not think of a blind spot. I promise you. It's fun. And it kind of takes a little bit of pressure off of yourself to realize that, you know, there could be times where we think we're just not good enough at something, or or we can't tap into this kind of energy. And when you look at your chart, you're like, oh, I just can't see it from this other angle. Well, how do I tap into that? Okay, well, we'll talk about that. Again, look at your ruler, ruler, ruler, ruler. Who's the landlord of the house? Like I said earlier, the earth signs are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. If you listen to the Fire Elements podcast, I mentioned I had a missing element. Well, that element is Earth. I have three empty houses all in Earth. The only empty element I have. That's it. I am all fire, air, and water. I have a ton of energy. I'm the kind of person who gets out of bed and 20 minutes later I'm off to work with no coffee. Yep, that's me. Every day. It took me until I was 28 before I began to meditate. Thankfully, I learned to ground myself. Oh geez. Where would I be today if I did not find my meditation? My goodness. Who knows? I would have been a little live wire meditation, by the way, everybody. Phenomenal. We should all be doing it. I think we should be teaching it in school. And I think actually some schools are now teaching it, which is amazing. This is a great example of how having an empty house does not mean you are empty in those areas of life. I mentioned before that the people who have the missing element attract people who have the specific element strong in their charts. So here's an example. And again, I use myself a lot because I value my clients' privacy. I wouldn't want any of my clients to be listening to this and be like, she's talking about my chart. That is why I use myself as an example, whether it's embarrassing or not. I really don't have any shame. So I'm okay with that. Again, I go with the flow energy, said me always. I haven't shown this perfect example about empty houses. I have an earth, mother, and uh father are earthy people. I have an all-earth child, meaning he has a stellium of earth. This includes his son and his rising, and I have an earth moon child. My mother is my rock. Without her, I would be lost. She is my favorite person and my best friend. I am so lucky. I still need her to remind me because I'm super forgetful. She just always has my back. My earth moon child grounded me. He is also like super amazing because I was a single mom, raised him with all of my sisters. He's only had grandmas, aunts, all women. And he has learned everything that I did not teach him about how to be a man. I mean, he does everything for me. Everything. I always tell him all the time, I would have been lost if I had daughters. Like, seriously, I would have been so lost. My earth child who has the stellium in earth, he is the one who has taught me patience. And it took a long time to learn patience, but he taught that to me. All their energies, like their suns, moons, risings, in sinistry, they're all in my empty houses. They fill all of my empty houses. It's fascinating how other people can fill those empty houses with a ton of energy. So again, no empty house. Okay, I hope you can understand that having an empty house does not mean you do not hold that energy. Okay, I'll give another example. This I'm just in general. Let's say you have Taurus in the eighth house of sex. And when it comes to making love, you can be a Taurus through and through. Love soft music, massages, low romantic lighting. It's all about the senses and the sensuality. But it can be an empty house, but you still hold that energy when you're using it in the eighth house themes, which is sex, is one of them. I have Virgo in my 12th house, which is super empty. I have diligently perfected my spirituality, being alone and working on my consciousness and opening up to source. I also service others in their spiritual journey. It is impossible to be empty in any part of your life. I harp on this because empty houses are probably the question I get asked the most. With empty houses, always look at the planet that is ruling the empty house to tap into the energy so you can feel empowered in that house. So let me give you an example. My 12th house of Virgo, I use two rulerships. I use Chiron and I use Mercury. Mercury is the original ruler, but I also use Chiron. And so my Mercury's in my 10th house. It's in Cancer, so I had to learn to nurture myself. And then it's also in Chiron, in Aries, in my seventh house of other people. So I needed to really learn meditation and learn to heal myself from what others have done to me, okay? Hope that helps me. For the earth energies above anything else is realism. Earthy people are not in the sky thinking about what could be. They live on the earth, grounded in what works. Earthy people are pragmatic to the core. Earthy people are much more concerned about what is happening now and how they will be able to deal with it. They want to master it, get perfect so that whatever they are working on, whether it be themselves, work, or their relationships, their end goal is to make sure it's useful and productive. Some key words for earthy people are pragmatic, efficient, sensual, analytical, common sense, realistic, need for security and status, materialistic in a good way, and bad, responsible, organized, disciplined, diligent, patient. They like to create systems. They can excel. They bring order to chaos. They can feel at home in their bodies. They can be good with money. They can actualize what they desire and need. They are patient and take their time learning something or letting something or someone in. They have way more discipline than their fiery neighbors who are far too messy. They are hard ass workers, all three signs have these abilities. They have tenacity, determination. They build safety nets, whether it be work or home and family. Earth needs, like no other, what is familiar and known. Earth people love predictability and are pretty predictable in their actions. Everything needs to be rational. They can be systematic in their pursuits of love as well. So there's always a shadow, right? In psychology, we can't ever look at not the shadow. We can never forget that there is light and dark side of everything on Earth. When it comes to Earth's shadow, it can be pretty complex. Earthy people live in such reality that is grounded to this earthy plane, they can miss the other beauties of life. Like the possibilities that something unknown is not frightening. This can lead to a monotonous cycle of everyday information and data, facts, and details. They can also be so anal about this that they can forget to have fun. Remember, fire is fun. There's that blind spot again. Because earthy people tend to undervalue or worse, repress a more fantastic, grander vision like the fire elements, they can become compulsive, narrow-minded, overly simple, overly possessive because too much vision can threaten their security. But what this does is limit a person's ability to live to their fullest. Again, we all have fire, but when earthy people tap into that, they can get scared that initiating a new experience can threaten their security. Shifts and change is horrifying to an earthy person. They can miss what else is available to them. The fear of the unknown and the fear of change keeps them stuck, keeping them in inertia. Everything needs to be the same. If it changes, there will be chaos. But this is just fear. And fear holds us back. Many earthy people can be riddled with irrational fears because earthy people are so rational and pragmatic, they forget about their intuition. I have a great story about that when we get to Virgos. Earthy people forget about their imagination and dreams. They can live in an endless work and no play while continuing to accumulate material objects out of need for security. Again, they forget to play. That damn blind spot. In relationships, earthy people can be overly judgmental, critical, cynical, unwilling to compromise, need for perfection. However, earthy people are attracted to fiery partners. Mm-hmm. Yes, they are. When an earthy person is with a fiery person, this can bring up problems, though. Okay? Because if you listen to the earth elements, you know that fiery people are they're loud. They're a lot, right? The play and the adventure of the fiery partner will be too unpredictable and unstable for that earthy partner. And it can be a threat to their stability and their security. Fire can bring chaos, and earth wants to bring order to chaos. See, earthy people need evidence and proof that something is real and safe because earthy people can only value what they can sense. They can miss a ton by being so rational. They can spend a lifetime of servicing others based on what they think the other person wants, based off their need. And this can bring conflict into relationships. Earthy people are wonderful providers. They build security, they are great homemakers and servants to others, and especially if they love you. Okay, I'm so grateful that my earthy people love me. So grateful. Oh my gosh, you have no idea. Having a missing element can be hard. But going back to that, once you're aware of it and you can tap into the people that you know that are gonna help you, let them help you. Okay. Let them help you. That's why they came into your life. Do the sinistry. It's fascinating. Earthy people can be solid partners. Mostly they are pretty reliable, stable, loyal, and determined to make the relationship work. Normality is safety. It creates stability and organizes reality. For earthy people, loyalty, responsibility, commitment, duty are way more important than romance and idealism. When it comes to sex, earthy people can struggle since they can lack a little bit of imagination. Again, not all earth, some earth signs can be brutes. For earthy people, they cherish the senses. Let them touch you, taste you, feel you, hear you. There is a reason I brought up the senses of earth in itself, because earthy people embody this in their beings. Okay, this was a little long one, and I do way better with shorter episodes because editing is a no-a-joke. Okay, so that was Earth in a nutshell. We will apply all this to Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn in the future episodes. Please like and subscribe so this little podcast can grow. If you're listening to this on YouTube, please leave me a comment on how you can relate to these energies. All right. So I hope that all made a lot of sense to you. Okay, till next week when I get to talk about one of my favorite signs the stubborn ass bull. We called Taurus. Have a great week and stay cool. It's only getting hotter. Bye.
