Hi, and welcome back to Cozy Midnight Collective. I'm Morgan. This is Chad.
SPEAKER_02And I'm Lauren. Grab your coffee, light a candle, settle in. We're picking up right where we left off with The Bewitching. And trust me, there's a lot to catch up on in part two.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. This book has been. I just want to devour it.
SPEAKER_02Interesting.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I love witchy folklore. Some of my favorite content. We were talking about possibly next year trying to figure out a way to get us over to Salem, Massachusetts, to go see what's going on with all the witchy stuff there. But I, after reading this book, I'm like, let's go to Mexico City.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's stuff is like, it's really interesting how every culture has like their own version of like witchcraft, witches, vampires, like whatever, like the lore, you know? And it's kind of interesting because like there are certain like like even Hollywood, right?
SPEAKER_01Like with Hocus Pocus, one favorite movie. Yeah. Doo doo doo doo. I don't know. I'm just it's good. It's a good obsession to have. It's really good. And there's so many fun ways to spin it. And yeah, like you said, like every single culture has their own version. Like kind of similarly to religion, everything, right? Everyone's like, this is our spin on it. And that's right.
SPEAKER_02It's like great. It makes me feel like it is real because like before we had like, you know, technology and all this other stuff, like everybody talked about this in their own way, in their own, you know, separate spots. And so it's like to me, I'm like, before people started getting together and like really chatting, like it's gotta be real. Like it and some it does.
SPEAKER_01And like here's the thing um, just because something is different than how you understood it to be doesn't negate the fact that it was real to somebody else. So I'm like, I'm just so open-minded. I'm very much like, bring me all the things, I believe you. Like, let's talk about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, it definitely makes me like I'm I'm definitely curious about it.
SPEAKER_01I have like a safe curiosity about it where it's like same with like ghosts and like don't ever want to fuck around with demons, which is why I will never. I mean, I've been I've gone to like seances and stuff, but leave the fucking Ouija board out. Where like we are not, I'm not fucking around with that. I'm not trying to open any fucking portals. I don't want demons around me and my family. But like, I believe in ghosts, I believe in demons. Yeah, I believe in like all the things.
SPEAKER_02And so I always loved like the they're real. There's like a quote that I heard, like you've seen the movie Devil, right? Where they're stuck in the elevator.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_02Um such a good movie. That like ending line when he was like talking about how his grandmother or his mom used to say, like, you know, the devil's real, but it's okay, because if the devil's real, then that must mean that God is real too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02And then you're like, oh that that is a little bit like that's peaceful to think about.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, I um and the devil runs the world. Yeah, yeah. It's our job to try to bring peace and love and God, or whatever you want to call God into that space. We're just realizing it more and more. Yeah, it's a scary world. We hope you're all safe out there, but you can come be cozy and safe and comfortable with us and talk about all the spooky shit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. This is like your brief escape, um, safe escape. Yeah. As we navigate this stuff together. Um that's what like I, you know, I like about this is that it's like you can love horror and like all those spooky things and not be consumed by it, I guess if that makes sense. Like there's a way to talk about it and a way to embrace it and like love it without turning into it. You know what I mean? Like, I don't know if I'm saying that like correctly.
SPEAKER_01I at all completely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So because especially in today's world where there's so much data and information at your fingertips, quite literally, it's hard to not get consumed and stuff. So I like to limit myself.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I will literally like Saturdays, for example. I'm like, I'm not gonna get on my phone on Saturday, like mom, I'll text you on Sunday, right? Like, just like you have to put the boundaries up and follow them for your own safety. Peace. Yes, absolutely.
SPEAKER_02It's important.
SPEAKER_01Pick up a book, you know? And if you don't like to read, then just yeah, come tag along with us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll read for you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll read them for you.
SPEAKER_02I have no problem doing that.
SPEAKER_01So, okay. Anyways, yeah, we're gonna dive into it. We're gonna talk about uh the first kind of chapter we're gonna talk about is the story up to this part, you know, what what has happened as far as like key events? We've talked about that there's several different timelines, right? What do we think about these characters? How are they developing? Do we feel like there's been a shift in our liking of them? So I'll be honest with that phase.
SPEAKER_02I'll be honest. I was just thinking about that.
SPEAKER_01I was like, god damn.
SPEAKER_02I still don't fuck with Carolyn. Carolyn Yeats.
SPEAKER_01No, there's something about her witch. Yeah, there's something about her that because obviously the book's about witches, and I'm like pretty sure Uncle Arturo is an evil motherfucker.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, that's why. There's something that's just like Yeah, when we discuss like Elba's stuff, I have like something I need to say about him because it he either he has like this like disdain for witches and witchcraft.
SPEAKER_01Like he But it's too much, it's so over the top, it's too much, it's overkill where it's like you know you're bringing more attention to it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it it drives me nuts, and like it part of me is like wondering like, were you spurned by like a witch? Like maybe you were interested in her, but she had no desire for you, and like so now you're just like fuck witches, or was it like maybe you took the advice of a witch, but like you didn't follow the rules? Because you know, it's very clear that you're supposed to follow their instructions and you respect the witches, you know, and like or like you know, so that's might have taken matters into his own hands and got burned by it. That's what I'm thinking we did with this too.
SPEAKER_01Like, uh I don't yeah, we'll get to that. Yeah, yeah. So where do we want to start? Which timeline?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I guess like we could do let's go with Minerva because Minerva's got some stuff that's kind of unfolding. Yeah, because like it all kind of really just centers around her. Like Alba was her great-great-grandmother, and then she's the one who's interested in like Beatrice Tremblay's work, and she's the one who's reading the manuscript, and I feel like through her eyes for reading about Jenny, she's the one interacting in present time, yeah, with Carolyn, or but present time is like what is it, 1998?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, 98, yeah. Yeah, so present time 98, but she's the one interacting, she's the one that's like piecing together the story that we are reading.
SPEAKER_02And I will say I think it's interesting way she's done the book because she goes into it not like trying to even like discredit because Beatrice believes 100% that it was something supernatural that is the cause of her friend Ginny's disappearance. Um, you know, she like and I think that Minerva kind of believes her, and I don't know if it's because she has a fascination with um like you know the witchcraft and like the spooky things, you know, she's she's in college, you know, she's she's obsessed with uh classic horror novels, and especially with Beatrice, just because she is such an underrated, in her opinion, well, and also underrated.
SPEAKER_01It was so rare at that time to have a woman in the industry writing about these types of things. Um, it was almost like, you know, again, it's okay for a man to do it so interesting, so cool, must watch, must read, must listen. But for a woman, it was it's almost like who did she which man did she get these stories from?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Right? Yeah. So um, you know, as like kind of like to throw back to part one, you know, she's reading these manuscripts. She was able to discuss, like uh, she was able to kind of talk to Carolyn Yates, who has possession of um a lot of Beatrice's things that weren't um released to the public or to like the school. Um, you know, Minerva has read just about everything that she has had access to. And so this is kind of like she's it's kind of unheard of that um Carolyn's allowing her to read these super secret things, you know. And um, you know, so Carolyn, you know, she she even points out that her late husband Edgar, who used to be Ginny's um Bo, fiance Bo, um, he kept a lot of her stuff, including some art. And she kind of describes it as like she kind of Carolyn is like an uppity woman. Like she's very much so like classic, like, because she was also an artist. Um, and you can tell that there's a difference between Carolyn's art. And Ginny comes from money too. Yeah. But it's however, so it's like it's not as respected as like Carolyn's old money. There's always like type thing.
SPEAKER_01There's always like how the division within a class is just mind-blowing.
SPEAKER_02It's just the constant judgment. Like you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't.
SPEAKER_01Like there's no and and Yates, uh, Carolyn Yates, her family come, yeah, very traditional, has been doing going here, doing this for so long, reputable, very social light. You know, our money is better than your money.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. So, so yeah, Minerva is reading this manuscript and she's like, you know, taking pictures of like the stuff that, you know, the art, and um, she's kind of being walked through by Carolyn's grants.
SPEAKER_01Hold on, I wanted to interrupt. So sorry. Yeah, that's true. Do you think? Because this is what I was thinking. Minerva's there, she's going through all this stuff. She only has whatever, whatever it is, one hour, two hours on specific days to look at this content. She has to stay in this room to look at this content. And you know how um her grandson, um god, yeah, Noah comes in. I almost feel like Carolyn is making him go in there as a distraction to Minerva while she's going through everything. So almost like, yeah, I'm letting you like look at this stuff and it's limited, but I'm gonna like throw in Noah there so you can't really focus truly and understand the content. Yeah. And then hope your time's up, you gotta go. And then, like, I feel like we're gonna get to a point where she's gonna be like, Well, you had this much time in these many days. Like, why didn't you get what you needed done done? So I'm glad she's taking pictures of stuff so you can like peacefully while you're at home, look at the fucking material.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because I think Noah's being thrown in there to keep her in this state of like being watched.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, Noah, too. I don't think Noah because Noah initially he comes up. Yeah, he comes off as like standoffish and like very just like kind of no, he's but he's fucking over his boy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So like he he just he gets what she wants. Yeah. My life is not my own.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he points out that like the degree that he's getting.
SPEAKER_01He doesn't want anything to do with his degree at this school, yeah, my age.
SPEAKER_02Doesn't want anything to do with it. Like he just kind of he just wants to live his life. He does state that his parents died when he was young. Um, Carolyn has raised him since he was a young kid. Um and uh there's a point where Carolyn um tells Noah to drive Minerva home. She's like, oh, so you know, to be a gentleman and drive the lady home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but he has to take the Jeep.
SPEAKER_02Um takes the Jeep, he can't take her car. And then he says he he tells her because Carolyn's family owned a textile factory in ancient.
SPEAKER_01And she wants to turn it into a a tech.
SPEAKER_02A tech company. Yeah. Yeah. Um, so uh Minerva was kind of had expressed, you know, her and like Noah have like this like back and forth where like it's just kind of like snippy with each other.
SPEAKER_01Well, they're gonna obviously end up like falling in love.
SPEAKER_02I kind of think it's cute. Like, I I hope that there's no other ulterior motives because I want to see Noah get what he wants in life.
SPEAKER_01And I feel like Minerva will help break him out of this, like he's stuck because he's controlled.
SPEAKER_02There's also a thing with like Conrad. So Conrad is like a student that because she's an RA. Yeah, but she's like, fuck Conrad. She does not like Conrad, but she does. But they had a thing. They had a thing briefly in the past. And she's like, she's just very shy and she's like very focused on school and her work.
SPEAKER_01Well, she's there on a scholarship. She doesn't have money.
SPEAKER_02But she said that there was a point where she was like kind of like working up the nerve to like ask him back out. And like they had shared like a kiss, and she was like, at first, she was kind of like didn't really know what to think about it. She's like very shy, reserved, and then she's like, Okay, I'm gonna work up the nerve and see if he wants to go see a movie. Yeah, but then by that point, he had already like been hanging out with like some other girl. And like with Minerva, I will say, like, girl, you took like weeks to talk to him. Like, so he probably just assumed like you had no interest. You have no interest in me.
SPEAKER_01But um, you can just tell Minerva is very she you could just tell she has anxiety, and I feel you, girl. Yeah, and her anxiety slows her down and keeps her isolated, which she I feel prefers. But it's like kind of like not a healthy circle. She's hiding stuff from like her family, yeah. She's not talking to them as much. She just like she doesn't have that like mental health support coming from any angle at the moment.
SPEAKER_02She does have like a friend that does like, you know, try to get her out of her shell, but she's just still she's very stuck in her way that was with him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She like she only gives so much information.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Hideo is like, he's like a really funny kid. Like he just, you know, he just kind of like waltz into her place and like he he hides her, he hides her coffee from her because she drinks like so much coffee, and he was like, You're gonna kill yourself with all the caffeine you're you're intaking. And then um that's like me. He has so much caffeine. Need coffee.
SPEAKER_01And then when I'm like, uh, grab an energy drink.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But going back to Noah, Noah ends up taking her to his grandmother's, like it's closed down at this point, um, to the factory, and he kind of walks her around and he's kind of like talking to her about how like the outside of it though. Yeah, the outside he can't get in, and she says, like, oh, can we go in? And he's like, Well, only Carolyn has those keys.
SPEAKER_01And so I'm kind of wondering what's in there, like, yeah. No, you know what I would have done immediately? Grab a rock, break a fucking window. I'm sure nobody would have played because it's literally it's it's been abandoned forever.
SPEAKER_02And meanwhile, throughout all of this, like Minerva's having like little things happen where she's kind of like feeling like there's eyes on her. And um, and also, so Conrad, um, he had a roommate and the roommate disappeared. We kind of talked about this briefly in part one. Um, he had a roommate, the roommate disappeared. Everybody assumed that he just dropped out.
SPEAKER_01But but he never came back for stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's got some boxes left over. And so her boss kind of told her, like, you need to go get those boxes out of that room.
SPEAKER_01Right. Um take it into storage.
SPEAKER_02Take it into storage.
SPEAKER_01So this two-week period can start, right? Like this go down of like reaching out to give him back the stuff.
SPEAKER_02And so like Minerva kind of gets curious because she's kind of like, why is everybody so like blase about the fact that this kid is just gone? You know? And he knows she had talked to Conrad about it, and Conrad was saying that like he just like he's like, I don't know, like in those last few days, he just got weird. And he's like Is that what it sounds like?
SPEAKER_01Jenny.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. He said that he was like talking to himself and he was like, you know, you write me up for all this stuff, but he was like, he had candles in his room and he was like talking to himself, and he was like, he said he just he got really weird towards the Andy. He's like, I tried inviting him to like go study or like have breakfast or whatever, and he just like was getting weird, like really um touchy about his stuff. Like he accused me of stealing some of his stuff, and he's like, I didn't touch any of his crap, you know. And so Minerva kind of goes through his boxes and she's noticing like she pulls out some notebooks and she she goes through his stuff because of her job. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, I don't know if we like briefly touched on that again, but she's what was it called?
SPEAKER_02She's an RA, like a resident advisor. Resident advisor, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So she's like, if you recall, she's like in her and Hideo, there's other RAs as well, but they get like assigned a certain number of like dorms and their buildings, and they're responsible for making sure yeah, the people below them are doing what they need to do in the group.
SPEAKER_02Because they're they are staying, it they are also alone on campus, so like it's like a skeleton crew summer break.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So, anyways, go ahead. No, so your outfit's so cute.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. I I was like, I love it. Yeah, I love it too. It's like a little it's like you know, uh TikTok. Yeah, I love TikTok shop. I kind of like want to go get like another one.
SPEAKER_01I love that so much. It's really cute. I'm like, I don't think it's cute. I think it just hit me and I was like, I've never seen you wear that before. Yeah, did it just come?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it came today. And I was like, I couldn't, like, I was like, it's just this is perfect.
SPEAKER_01We're filming. Yeah, I love it. It's so cute. Okay, sorry, go ahead.
SPEAKER_02It's okay. Um, so yeah, so basically, um, she pulls out some notebooks and she's noticing that the artwork in the notebooks matches the same artwork that Ginny did. And so she's kind of noticing that, and then like she's feeling like somebody's watching her and she's just like feeling really freaked out.
SPEAKER_01Right now, it's not it's sounding like possession.
SPEAKER_02That's what I'm thinking. So that's kind of like it for Minerva. Like that's um, yeah, that's kind of all that happens. Like it kind of leaves off on her feeling.
SPEAKER_01But do you remember? Okay, what I wanted to talk about with Minerva when she went into the library. Oh my god, I forgot about that. Yeah. Yeah. To look at the old clippings that she had already been in there and gone through this, but she was looking for um Tremblay's work.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So now she's like, I need to go back through to look for Ginny. Yeah, like see if specifically Ginny's missing related to Ginny missing that's been like in these clips. Yeah. And she's in there and just picture this like fucking ancient library. It's not been redone. They, you know, they want to archive all their stuff and keep it, but it's this like really old system. So in order to like get access to the archives that she needs, it's like in my mind, I don't know, I need to find like a YouTube video and like visualize it. But I'm pretty sure it's this like it's like a crank system. It's like a crank system that moves the books out of the way. And then up comes the archives, right? Or I don't know exactly how this book is.
SPEAKER_02There's like a movie. It's a scary movie. They kind of use this as like a scare in the last. I was scared for her.
SPEAKER_01I was like, get the fuck out of there. You're literally Yeah. So there, yeah, there's a part in the book where like she's in there and you're supposed to announce when you're coming and going that you're moving this so people can get the fuck out of the way because you will get squished. Yeah. Okay. And so they start moving and she's like, oh hey, you know, making herself known. Nope. They keep going and she's going to barely like okay, she trips and falls. Of course. And then she barely gets out of there and they, and she's like, holy fucking shit. Yeah, I almost got squished. And then she comes out like ready to raise hell, like, what the fuck? I said, I said, yeah. Anyways, she goes, she starts freaking out. Yeah. To nobody. Yeah. Like she's in there alone. And I was like, oh yeah. Oh. That was truly terrifying. Cause I just, when I'm reading, I'm like there. That is, I am Minerva. Put yourself in their shoes. Yes. And I'm like, oh my God. Yeah, somebody does want you dead.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But why? Like, that's what I'm saying. Is like at this point, when I'm saying harmless, I just think it's Carolyn. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I just think it's dead.
SPEAKER_02And that's why I'm kind of like, okay, Carolyn, if you had a problem with somebody possibly finding out whatever it is you're hiding, why would you have let Minerva read this up? You could have literally told her to fuck off. There was no reason why you should have lettered.
SPEAKER_01Probably somewhere inside of her wants it to be found. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Or, like, you know, speaking of like spirits and like possession, like what if Edgar had figured it out? Like, how did Edgar die? Because we know nothing. He just died like he passed away. So the year recently.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was recently.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's like so he might have found something out about Jenny. Yeah. I'm curious about all that. I know, and maybe the maybe Carolyn's. I don't know, maybe. We're gonna find out more. We just have to read. Yeah. I have no idea which way it's gonna go. Yeah. But the grandson, I think, is a pawn somehow. Obviously, Carolyn, she's gonna be in deep shit. We're gonna realize she's nasty.
SPEAKER_02Or maybe we're literally just being led in that direction. Yeah, like I don't know. That's the beauty of this book, is like I'm just kind of like, I really just don't know where it's gonna go. Like, I don't know. Um it's all gonna come together.
SPEAKER_01All three stories are gonna come together at some fucking time.
SPEAKER_02And it's all gonna be a poor on like on poor Minerva. She's gonna end up getting like the brunt of all this shit.
SPEAKER_01She is, but I think it'll unleash this like purpose in her where she's just gonna be this fucking bad bitch that knows all this shit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I will say, like, because I kind of wanna like let's go into Beatrice real quick. Yes, because I feel like because it it kind of connects, and then Alba's story is like interesting, and I kind of want to save that part for last. So with Beatrice, her stuff just kind of is continuing um down the road with like her suspicions as far as like what's happened with Ginny, Ginny's last days before she went missing. Um wait, are you Beatrice or Beatrice? Beatrice. Okay, we are on. Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_01I just wanted to clarify.
SPEAKER_02So with Beatrice, she kind of goes into kind of continuing with saying that like um Ginny's behavior is kind of getting like a little bit funky, you know, like she's still her friend, you know, she's still there, like the beautiful. She describes her as effervescent, like just very like loose, happy. Um, there was a situation on Halloween night. They had like a dance that they went to where Ginny kind of had disappeared for a little bit, right? And then she comes back like running through the woods, and she's like, somebody was following me. She's she's really disturbed, yeah. And so she she was kind of shaking, but they like you know, the group kind of like laughed it off. You know, it's Halloween night, you know, you're probably spooked, like everything's okay, you're here now, you're safe. Yeah, and people do this on Halloween, like yeah, and so as this as like Beatrice's stuff goes on, you kind of are getting the that um she so Ginny has said that she's very spiritual and that she can speak with like spirits and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01And kind of like I guess what we would call like a medium, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02In our day and age, right?
SPEAKER_01Medium or what else do they call mystic.
SPEAKER_02Medium or um I know because Sam and Colby from Explore, they like to hang out with them all the time.
SPEAKER_01Fully aware of what we're doing because they are so cute. I have to show you. We are making some merch and it goes along obviously with our show, but look at these, they're so dope. They're coasters. This is a coaster holder, but look at this they come out. And obviously, you would lay them flat, right? And put your drinks on. But look how gorgeous are we are gonna make it more obviously, but we'll put them up on our as a shot. I need help like it'll be so cool, you guys. You love it. You love it. I love it.
unknownOh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01It's like it's like it's gray. But they're dried flowers, they're gorgeous. This one I didn't know. Oh yeah, this one's super cool. This one was more like the gray coming out like at the bottom. Anyways, you guys, they're lovely. Support our show and get some really cool merch. And then there's like a little stand for it, as you saw clearly. Okay, so anyways, let's keep going. Let's pick up I had to pee.
SPEAKER_02So oh, okay, yeah. So Beatrice. Um, so yeah, like I said earlier, she said that you know, Ginny said that something was following her, and so a couple weeks later they decide to have like a seance. Um, well, Ginny decides to have a seance, and Ginny is a medium, yeah, right. So and so Carolyn kind of comes and she's just kind of like, you know, kind of making jokes about it. She's like, whatever. And then they have like a random friend named Mary Ant. They brought in Yeah, they needed four people.
SPEAKER_01So there's Carolyn, Ginny, Beatrice, and Marianne.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, they're holding hands around this table, and you know, like Ginny kind of calls out to the spirits, and like they have a candle, so it's like it's the only light is coming from the candle, it's dark.
SPEAKER_01And um And they're all thinking like whatever. Like Beatrice and out with the other girls, it's like a beautiful day, and we're in here doing this with Ginny. But I remember Ginny is like knock once for yes and twice for no. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's just like boom, like big knock. And they're kind of like, they're all like holding hands, and they're like, There's your knee, Marianne. Yeah, they're trying to like Beatrice is like trying to like she's trying to be respectful to like both friends because she's kind of caught in the middle. Yeah. And she's kind of like, but she in her mind, she's like, okay, there's no way that she would have been able to use her knee for that.
SPEAKER_01Like she's like, it's almost like it came from within the walls.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she's like, it's like the it's like the room itself, like vibrated with like the force of this knock. And um, like some more like little creepy stuff happens, and then like all of a sudden, like the the candle just like blows out and they're like plunged into darkness. And then like Ginny is like sitting there and like she like is starts talking, but it's it's like it's her voice, but it's not her. And the spirit basically says, like, she says, like, it's like a spirit that takes over her body, and like it basically says, like, Virginia, something terrible is going to happen to you, pretty much. Like, it's just pretty much saying, like, something bad's gonna happen to you, and then like she like kind of like passes out almost, and like Marianne gone. Yeah, Marianne.
SPEAKER_01Marianne's like fucking she she's gone. Carolyn's like they're all fucked because they didn't close the door.
SPEAKER_02Carolyn's like, oh great, you you pissed off Marianne. She's just more annoyed by all this. She's like, You're messing around too much. This isn't funny. You're you're playing with us. Carolyn, Carolyn does not believe any of it. Either she either she was terrified and she's just reacting out of anger, or she's like, she's like, You're just you're a fake, you're a phony, and she's like, I'm done with your stuff. And she like leaves. And then Beatrice is like, what the fuck just happened? And so she she basically like tucks like Virginia is like, I don't know what happened. Like, she's like, I feel sick, like I don't feel good. And so Beatrice, like, you know, tucks her into bed, and like she kind of like keeps watch over her, and she's just kind of like, Virginia, like something's going on for Virginia, right? Whether I believe in all the ghost spooky stuff, whatever, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and so I'm just like in that room right now, yeah, cold. Yeah, I feel oh, what would you have done?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I'd like to think that I would like sit through the whole thing, but maybe I would have been like Marianne and just like dip.
SPEAKER_01Like, because if it gets to be too much, I think I definitely would have been Beatrice in it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I but I kind of would have had like some of Carolyn's reaction, like I've been like, what the fuck? This was not we shouldn't have done this. Yeah. And me, like knowing all my knowledge now as like a 37-year-old, I've been like, how do we close?
SPEAKER_02How do we close the door we just open?
SPEAKER_01Like what's going on?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's and like it's just kind of funny because like the I'm then dragging her to a church.
SPEAKER_01We gotta get to a fucking yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna go.
SPEAKER_01I don't know what to do, but somebody else has to help us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, it's funny, but it's just kind of funny because I just kind of giggled like when I like Mary Ann just like is like gone and she's like freaking out, and then yeah, so it's like time's going on, like Ginny is like kind of getting like a little bit erratic. Like she's like, she's fucking scared of something, right? She's she keeps saying that something is following her whenever she walks home. In you, yeah, and there's a point where um oh no, yeah, Beatrice comes out. Go ahead. Yeah, no, so no, it's okay. So Beatrice comes and she like looks out the window and she notices that um so there's this guy who works around the school, he's like a handyman. His name is I believe Santiago or something like that. Yeah, Santiago. And he, you know, he's like the mind you this is like the 30s. So like the the girls, like, you know, are kind of like, ooh, like there's somebody wait wait is oh yeah, different the end of the 30s, yeah. It's somebody different, and so like again, so the working theory is that Ginny ran off of Santiago, like that's what everybody thinks.
SPEAKER_01Everybody, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's because she's the only one, yeah.
SPEAKER_01She's the only one that ever like talked to him, but she comes from a family that's a good family, yeah. Who has money, yeah. She has a solid boyfriend that turned into a fiance and loved him. She loves she loves him, yeah. She's thriving with her friends in school, like there's no there's no reason to think that she would have just run the fuck off.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, keep going. Okay. So, so yeah, so there's a point where um Beatrice looks out the window and she sees that she's talking to Santiago, and she said that like the nature of their conversation doesn't seem like they're secret lovers or whatever. She's like, it just seems like she was being kind, she's being nice, like whatever. And so um Beatrice or like Ginny comes up the stairs, and like Beatrice is like, Oh, what were you talking to Santiago about? She's like, Oh, we're just chatting, like no big deal. And then um there's a point where she wakes her up in the middle of the night, like Ginny wakes up Beatrice in the middle of the night, and she's like, Yeah, she's like, There's somebody, like somebody's watching us. She's like, I I looked out the I looked out the window, I saw a man, he was standing there, he was looking up at our window. Um so Ginny basically is frantic, thinks that she's got someone following her. She was outside.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was footsteps in the snow, they were stopped looking up at the girls in the window.
SPEAKER_02And she described the man as like wearing like a she said it was a man and he was wearing like a long coat. Yeah. Or something like that. And so Beatrice kind of takes like the practical route where she's like, okay, if you know what he looks like, then maybe you should like report him to the police, you know. Like, let's get this. Like, if he's somebody's following you, we need to report it. And be or Ginny is kind of like like I saw what he was wearing, but I never saw his face. So she's like, I don't really have anything to give them, you know. So Ginny's just kind of like scared. Beatrice is trying to be supportive while also trying to be realistic. Like Ginny's very much so like spirits, ghosts, like something just following me. And so, yeah, so there's a point where they're going away for Thanksgiving. Um, Beatrice is gonna travel with their friend, I believe, Marianne, and then Carolyn's going home with her dad. Yeah, and then um Beatrice or Ginny's gonna go with Edgar to his family's house for Thanksgiving. And so before they leave, you know, she's still kind of freaked out, but she's just excited to like get away. She's gonna go be with her fiance. Beatrice is hoping that maybe being away from everything will keep, you know, maybe give her the distraction that she needs to be able to move on. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Just to reset.
SPEAKER_02Like, yeah, you're gonna be good, right?
SPEAKER_01So we're gonna move on. We're gonna be things are gonna be normal again.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So then there comes a point where they come back from Thanksgiving, and Beatrice is talking to Ginny, and Ginny's just seems exhausted. Like her eye, like she's just not her usual beautiful self. She's like described if you don't recall, but she's like gorgeous, gorgeous, like long flowing hair, like she doesn't like pin it up like the other girls.
SPEAKER_01She's very like boho for the area, yeah, which is like super abnormal in the 30s.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, everybody's just kind of like, well, you know, it's just Ginny and Prim and proper and pinning their curls up and all that stuff. So um, so yeah, there comes so she comes back and she like looks worse. Yeah, just looks worse. And she's like, and Beatrice is like, what happened? Did you and Edgar get into a fight? Or and she's like, Well, yeah, we did. Um, you know, she said, I was kind of telling him about what was going on, and she said, I want to do like a ritual pretty much to like cleanse everything and just get rid of everything. And Edgar is very much so like practical, like, like he's kind of like the guy where he's like, whatever baby wants, baby gets, but he's also like, dude, like, I don't know what, like, I don't know how to like help you with this because I don't believe in all of this. Yeah, but so he's just kind of like, you're being silly, like this is silly, this is ridiculous. He calls her dad, and her dad is like very he's a doctor. Her mom passed away, but her dad is alive.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Ginny's?
SPEAKER_02Ginny's, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02So her dad is like, I think he's I think they said he was like a doctor to the stars.
SPEAKER_01So he's like kind of like oh yeah, whose parents are both dead again?
SPEAKER_02Um Noah. Noah Yates.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01I don't know why.
SPEAKER_02I just was like No, it's yeah, it's there's like a lot of parts. Yeah, there's a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, Ginny's three different timelines we're dealing with. Yeah. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02So Ginny's mom is dead, and so her dad is left over, and her dad looks at like Ginny's free-spiritedness as like, yeah, control yourself, like get yourself together. Like you're a g you're a woman, you know. So he so Edgar, you know, he's trying to be kind, like he's just he was worried for her, and he's kind of like, okay, she's got something going on, like we need to help her. So he calls her dad, and his and her dad is just a dick about it, like no care, no, um, no concern. Just more so, like, yeah, it's more so like, don't embarrass me, like, you know, this is like as good as you're gonna get. Like, you know, you got this great man, comes from a great family, like whatever. So um like basically don't fuck it up.
SPEAKER_01When it's yeah, no, you should be listening to your daughter and be supportive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so if there's like sad, yeah, and it's kind of sad because like poor Ginny is just she's just been like this happy, just blessed, like she knows that she's happy and she's blessed, and now this is just really taking a toll on her. Yeah, and so where we kind of end with like Beatrice stuff is Beatrice's stuff, is that um she's Ginny's a part of her stuff, yeah. Yeah, so she's trying to be practical and she's like, Okay, like I don't know. And then like she she says that she kicks herself for just not being supportive because she said what I didn't realize.
SPEAKER_01Well, hindsight, yeah, it's 2020.
SPEAKER_02And she said, What I didn't realize is that she was fucking possessed. Yeah, is that she's got like this going on, but she's like, What I didn't realize is that in a couple weeks she will have gone missing. Like from a couple weeks from that last conversation, she will go missing forever, and I'll never see her again. And so yeah, she's kind of sad about that. Like, and that's just kind of like the last words that we read, at least up until this part. Yeah. And um, so yeah, like I devastating. Yeah, it's really sad, and it's sad to think that she was terrified up until the point that she goes missing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like if you just remove the thoughts of Ginny's going crazy, and you just fucking listen, she's acting like she is terrified. Like something is there. Something is haunting her. Yeah, it makes me sad because she's just like people are just so quick, like even nowadays. Like you just want to like fucking label and categorize so you so you can understand. Yeah. When it's like go ahead, sorry. Yeah, just just give her a fucking minute. Like, just fucking shut the fuck up and listen.
SPEAKER_02And especially since she is someone who's like very like in tune with like spirits and spiritual spirituality and stuff like that, for her to be scared when she talks to ghosts like every day or whatever, like something is going on, and you guys are truly not understanding.
SPEAKER_01And she she obviously is in over her head, and she she needs help. But in, you know, she there's nobody around her that can offer the assistance she needs. So, what would have been cool is if the friends would have helped her find somebody that can help her.
SPEAKER_02I will say, I do think Beatrice did as much as she knew how to do.
SPEAKER_01Because, like, like yeah, in her own right, but it's like, well, no, let's go find somebody that knows.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And she and she does defend Ginny a lot, especially like when Carolyn's concerned, because Carolyn is just always like talking shit. Like, she's just like, I'm tired of her, like always putting the attention on her and like all this other stuff. And and and Beatrice is like, dude, she's our friend. Like, we need to support her. Like, whether you believe in those ghosts or not, we need yeah, she needs help.
SPEAKER_01And she's not always trying it's not about attention. Like, why are you going there? Yeah, why do you always want to go there?
SPEAKER_02And we have to remember too that Carolyn is always talking very fondly about Edgar, and she kind of like gets like little like. Well, she's known to stay people's men. Yeah, she's like very interested in Edgar. She's always saying, like, oh, that Edgar, poor Edgar, he's just he's gotta deal with this and Ginny's like, you know, stuff. And um, she's she's like very quick to be to like kind of like because like there's been a couple times where like you know, Ginny's We all know how it ends. She married him, yeah. Yeah, and that's weird. Like it's it's weird, and I'm kind of like, how did how did Edgar let that happen?
SPEAKER_01That's happened in real life before, and it's like its own story, if it naturally like happens, but it is always weird, yeah. It's like it's a little bit more but with when it comes to Carolyn, I feel like it's more surgical, like it was planned, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Whether she had something to do with Ginny's disappearance or not, yeah, I feel like getting with Edgar was probably more excited. Yeah, she was more excited than oh great.
SPEAKER_01Now that that's over with, I don't have to come up with this plan to remove it.
SPEAKER_02Well, and they do discuss that Carolyn's family's business, which is like a very successful business, is kind of having some trouble. And it is it is during the depression, so like they're kind of having a hard time. Like, she like there's a point where she like Beatrice overhears her talking to her father about like prices about things and Like and he's like kind of like don't talk to me about things that you don't know about. You're here going to like art college, you know, like art college. You stay in your lane, you know, yeah, little woman, and I'm gonna handle my stuff because I'm this is my business, you know. And um yeah, but there's like kind of some trouble going on there where Carolyn's like fancy lifestyle might be running out. And so even with that, like maybe with Gindy out of the way, maybe she saw it as like another opportunity for it's like, okay, I know my family business is potentially gonna go under if I secured this marriage between myself and Edgar, then I'm set for life because Edgar's family is like just very well off, they have no issues whatsoever with money. So um it's generational, yeah. Yeah, and from what I understand, like the Yates family is like they're pretty decent people, like they're trying to keep people employed as much as they can, whereas like Carolyn's father is kind of like trying to cut as many corners as possible while saving money. And so like their family is like seems a little bit more corrupt. And Edgar just seems just again like just a great guy, the typical boy, you know, maybe guy next door type thing.
SPEAKER_01Just was the factory like going back to the factory with like you know, Minerva going to see this factory with Noah. That was a Yate factory. That yeah, it wasn't Carolyn's dad.
SPEAKER_02So it was Carolyn, it was Carolyn's dad's textile factory.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so that's the company that was cutting corners. Yeah. So what what did Edgar's family do? Do we know?
SPEAKER_02And I just can't I can't remember specifically off the top of my head, like what they did. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um but that factory, the textile one that we were thinking of, it was all yeah, yeah. Okay. All right, yeah. So let's move on. Yeah, let's let's move on to our next timeline. Yeah, Alba.
SPEAKER_02And Alba's it's wild, is interesting, and it's kind of so sad. So where we left off part one, her brother, Alba believes her brother's missing. She goes into his room, there's like a a broken pitcher on her base or spots. Yeah, there's um there's blood, and she is worried. She like goes to her mom. His horse is missing. Yeah, horse is missing. Yeah, she goes to her mom and is like where's he at?
SPEAKER_01And she's kind of like nothing to worry about, blah blah blah blah blah. Yeah. She's like, I'm gonna go talk to Lena girls.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so it initially because she wants she wants to get help. Yeah. Well, Alba's just like nervous and she's she just feels like she's like, something is wrong. He didn't just like something's not right. He wouldn't one, he wouldn't leave a mess like this. Yeah, he's very clean.
SPEAKER_01Well, he was gonna go get um. He was talking to Valentine in the morning. And so he's probably at the farm, and she's like, Okay, I'm gonna go talk to the Molina girl. Artero's no help.
SPEAKER_02Uncle Artero is just very much the fine.
SPEAKER_01I don't care where he's at. I don't know why she likes him so much, other than the fact that like she aspires to like nothing about him is like kind. Yeah, he's just like, oh, okay, so he's good looking and he knows how to wear a suit and dress, but and he lives in the city. But she this just shows like even though she's 19, she's still very much a child. Like she's looking at the wrong thing, she's focusing on the wrong things in life. He's a sh he's a piece of shit. Like he treats people like shit that are his family.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's very clear he's very he's interested in like the money and that type of thing. And him and Tadeo did not get along. Um, Tadeo like could kind of tell like what his intentions were, and Tadeo's like, I I don't trust you. You're you have nothing to you have no say in any of this. Um, you are a guest here in my family's home, you know, that type of mentality. So um, right off the bat, like he just wants to come in, take charge.
SPEAKER_01This is my sister, like husband's out of the way, and it's like, hold, hold, yeah, hold the fuck up. In the beginning, I was like, oh, let's give our tour a chance, but what we know of him, and he's just like calling people idiots, yeah, and like shit talking, the local culture, yeah. And it's like, okay, yeah, you need to fucking pack your shit up and go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You are not helping.
SPEAKER_02And also his like inappropriate behavior with Alba. Alba touching her too. He's like touching her, he's like putting perfume on her wrists, and like sniffing her wrists.
SPEAKER_01He's like very predatory.
SPEAKER_02There's a moment where like they like it seems like they might kiss. And he's just sick. And Alba is kind of like she is still very childlike. And again, like for the times, it's 1908. Her mom's not talking to her about like appropriate feelings for men. Like, she's kind of like very much supposed to be like the proper young woman. Well, there is discussions about that where you know, that's where she was kind of feeling awkward with her childhood friend Valentine, where um a lot of people think that they're due to be put together in manure and not they're in mourning because the father died, and so there's this like it's just like a weird time. And Alba too, like she spent most of her life like on a farm, so she's just kind of like wanting to get out and do new things and see the world. But as the situation break away from the yeah, that like the monotony, yeah, like the just the typical farmer's wife life, like she doesn't want to do that. But with her brother going missing, it shifts her perspective on like what is actually truly important and like her priorities. Yeah, and so like I said, immediately she's like terrified. She's like, something happened, something's not right. She knows her brother, her and her brother and Valentine used to run the ranch together, they were running around barefoot all the time and playing, and so she's not the three of them are very close. Yes, and so her mom and Uncle Arturo are just kind of like he's fine. And so come nightfall, or no, I think Valentine comes to visit and he's like, Yes, comes to call on her. Well, no, she goes there and he's like, He's not here. Yeah, he's like, he never showed up.
SPEAKER_01He did he didn't come because she showed up at his farm in a panic. Send my brother out, like right now. I need to like look at him, and he's like, What are you talking about? And then that's when more panic.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So Valentine from the get-go, he's very respectful of like how she's feeling, and he's like, Okay, I'm gonna gather up some men, we're gonna go look for him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and so they're unsuccessful, can't find him, like we're fast forwarding, and after we're gonna be able to do everybody's taking it back easily.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So the family goes into town and they decide that they're gonna go talk to the mayor and see if he can help, if he can spare some men to help look for the brother.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and they wanna put up a reward, yeah. Um, of course, Arturo's like, that's fucking stupid. Like, everybody's gonna be trying to come for that easy money. Um he's just a bastard, yeah. All the way around, like everything he wants to fight. Yeah, and like there's a point where if he came at it a little bit differently, maybe it could be maybe it could be like yeah, maybe you could like, oh, but no, no, no. Everything is just yeah, it's just a dick.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. He he's yeah, because like there's a point where like Alba and Valentine and even like her mom kind of are starting to think like maybe more like because their dad, I guess every year with the crops, he would do like a kind of like a small like witchy ritual type thing where you know they would he would do it, and every year they would have like a successful crop. And so this year before he was able to do that, he had passed away, and so they're kind of like thinking, like, oh, we didn't do the blessing, like we didn't do this, and like maybe you know, maybe that's what's going on in Arturo's like this is ridiculous, you guys in your small town, like like small-mindedness, like this is he's just missing, you know. Like, and so they're kind of thinking about like maybe going and talking to like one of the witches, and um they're calling it on there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like so that's like kind of where like these witches and that type of thing, like where they live, or not witches, but like the people that understand well they they do refer to them as witches.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they are, yeah. Yeah, so they they do refer to them as like witches and like they kind of just like give like charms, they give like um you know, they do accept like they act so they're in this other place. Mm-hmm. Yeah, so yeah, Los Los Pinos, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So they're kind of discussing about like maybe going and talking to like one of the witches and like even Alba's mother is talking about it and like yeah, that's a good idea. And Arturo, I guess, is like talking to her about because they have like they have hired help um and they're wearing like charms because they're they're nervous, yeah. And um between this and that actually, um, so Arturo's or not Arturo, um, Tadeo's horse ends up showing up, but it's dead. Was that that was part one? No part two.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah, because he was the horse died, the horse and it's like ripped apart.
SPEAKER_02Like it's not, it's it's just like it's bloodied and like gross, and then another one of their horses ends up dying.
SPEAKER_01Tadeo's missing, two horses are dead, and then the goats start. Yeah, the goats start getting basically, yeah, Valentine is like, You're having bad luck and dead animals. Like, this is like there's traditional bewitchment.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so he's like also he's suggesting to Alba, like, we need to go talk to somebody, like one of these witches. Like, we need help.
SPEAKER_01And like they're like, we can't include Arturo. We cannot even include your mother. Because he's just like, let's come up with a plan on Tuesday. Like, we'll go over there together. We'll go together because they're supposed like Arturo's Is he the one that was going in to talk to the mayor?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so he decides to ask he wants to hire a private investigator.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes. And the mom and the mom's going back to talk to the mayor, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So they they're kind of like she wants she was kind of like leaning towards like the witch idea, but then her brother kind of talked her into it, and she was saying, he was saying, Well, they're just gonna steal your money. And she's like, Well, isn't the private investigator also gonna take it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he's like, Well, pfft duh, but at least like we're gonna, yeah, like he's just such a fucking thing, yeah. And then so they hatched this plan, they're like, Okay, so they'll they'll be gone doing their own thing, and we now we can go see the witches.
SPEAKER_02And I will say, Alba's like outlook on her uncle is like starting to sour like a lot. Like she's kind of like she's getting more and more annoyed with him, and the fact that he's being such a jerk about like all of the magic and the beliefs and stuff like that. Yeah, and there's a point too where she had she was in her room at night and she could hear something like down in the yard. And she brought that up to Valentine.
SPEAKER_01She was like, it there was something down there. It sounded like an animal like I've grown up. I've grown up here. I know a coyote sounds the animals are, yeah. It scared me. Something like that it was not a regular, it was not a regular animal. Something is going on. Then he's trying to convince her, like, no, like you're not crazy, right? Please, like, he spooked for her. Please, like, take a bowl. You know about a bowl. Like, open some scissors, put them in the bowl, put water over that, put it under your bed at night. Get your brother's gun, like, sleep with the gun underneath your pillow. And she's like, I thought we weren't freaking out. And he's like, No. Do you hear me? I'm very calm, but we're gonna do these things. Very calmly, we're doing these things. And so, and then she wakes up and the fucking scissors are like rusted. Rusted. Yeah. Well, she woke up and she was like, I'm I'm so silly. Like, I feel so much better today. I can't believe I was like freaking out, and we needed to go talk to the witches, and like I just I feel so much better. I'm silly, like, there wasn't this weird animal, like everything is fine. And then she looks at the scissors and they're rusted, like they're ancient, like they've been there forever, and she's like, Oh fuck, like she's like, Okay, now I'm freaking out.
SPEAKER_02Like now, yeah, and she said that this was like the first night where she actually slept well, yeah. So it makes me think that they like protected her, yeah. But she was it just was so much that it just fucked up the scissors. Like, so that's what like so so yeah, so she decides, okay, yeah, we're going. And so she kind of wakes up early, her and Valentine sneak away, and they go to Los Pinos, or Los Pinos, or Pinos, however you however you pronounce it. We should probably look that up. But sorry, we're so sorry, yeah, so sorry.
SPEAKER_01But is this a real place?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I have no idea.
SPEAKER_01Like, because I feel like I mean, I know the author, I know Sylvia, like she grew up in Mexico City, and like this is based in Mexico City, so I'm pretty sure it like is a part of the actual true culture, and we like don't want to like do that an injustice to that culture. But um we'll do some research between part three, I think. Yeah, P-I-N-O-S. I know there's no squiggle.
SPEAKER_02There's usually like a accent thing. Yeah. So maybe it is just low low space. I'm just I'm white.
SPEAKER_01I'm up in Arizona, but that's not helping me at all.
SPEAKER_02Oh no. So so yeah, so they they go to this place and they seek out a witch, which I guess uh Valentine has spoken to this witch a few times before. And Alba's kind of going into this.
SPEAKER_01They they use their help all the time. The witches are not they're not all bad. No, that they aren't. No, they're good. But somebody is using the witchcraft for bad. Yeah. And it's trying to figure out who is using this for evil.
SPEAKER_02Well, I saw in your notes too that they had pointed out that they need in order to do something like this, yeah, to make his brother disappear. Go ahead, read it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so yeah, it was on page 133. It says they grab hold of their victims' nails, their hair, a personal item, then they cast spells and tease their victims, and they move the bew or excuse me, my writing. Um, and the more the bewitched grows fearful, the more pleasure and power the witch derives. So, yeah. So I'm kind of wondering what's missing of his. So basically, the scissors, the way that that worked, the way that that spell was able to help ward off the evil, it was able to keep essentially like her energy intact overnight where it wasn't being leached off.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because her fear, because she's been terrified this morning. Yeah, she's been yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's how it's it's not that they physically stop somebody from coming in the room, and it's that it's it's cutting off like whatever tie there is to this leech of energy. And she did mention, I'm like, wow, I mean, I don't doubt it. I'm about to sleep with someone. I know I kind of want to try. I want to try it. Yeah. So Valentine, essentially, when he's saying that Alba, their family, so the whole family has been bewitched, right? So he believes it's the work of he thinks it's the work of the Teoloquani. Okay, I probably okay. Teyok Lok Lokwashni. Teyok. Tell Yok Lokwashni. That's as good as it's gonna get. Tell Yep. Them. Yeah, and so he said they're witches who sucked human blood and devoured the hearts of men. These are like the most dangerous witches that there are. For in the heart resides the life force of all creatures. The Telequani was formidable. The kind you spoke about in a murmur for fear of summoning it. Wild.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, and so needless to say, go ahead. Well, this is almost pretty much confirmed when they go visit this particular she's an older woman. Yes. Um, and Valentine brings her, yeah, he brings her a gift. He's like, I brought you a gift, and so she, you know, yeah. Alba kind of goes into this, like very much so. Like she's trying to be realistic without giving into her fears. Yeah. But then she's kind of like, Okay, this is ridiculous, this is silly, you know, because the witch is kind of like she's saying, like, okay, it does sound like the Teo quani, right? And she said, at this point, your brother's gone. Like she said, he's gonna be good. Um, but she said, you know, she's like, and let me guess, animals are going missing and they're coming up dead. And she did say, she did admit that she heard about her brother's disappearance through gossip.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_02And so Alba's kind of like, Come on, like, you're not like actually a witch. And she and the woman ends up saying, she says, You have visions, don't you?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02And the only person she told about this was Arturo, and she was kind of trying to be silly about it, and he kind of made her seem silly about it, so she was too embarrassed to share it with anybody else. But she has like little visions. So Valentine doesn't even know. Yeah, Valentine's talking about them.
SPEAKER_01This lady's like calling it out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she's like, You have visions, and that that's where Alba like is like, Okay, I'm sad, I'm listening to what you have to say. Yeah, and so she ends up like kind of giving her like a spell. She says, You know, I'll give it to you, but I need that ring on your finger. And Alba's again, she's kind of like warring with like, Do you just want my ring? Or are you actually gonna give me something that's actually going to work? And Alba kind of and like Valentina's like, give it to her. He's like, You guys are there's something, something is going on, you are not safe. Yeah, and so he says, Think of think of your brothers and sisters, think of the little ones, and so like we can't help. There's nothing we can do. This this is what we do, we have to protect the rest. So she gives the ring to the woman, the woman gives her um pretty much like a spell. I need to go back and check what the specifics are. But um basically she tells her um, you know, you have to do this exactly. Um, like don't skim. So she basically gives her, she says, It's no good thing to be caught in the snare of a Teola Kwani. If it drinks from you, you'll be doomed. Death will surely follow. There's no remedy for that. So she does here, she does check Alba for like bite marks, scratches on her body. She says, Oh good, it hasn't hasn't drank from you yet, so you're good. Um, so she basically has her she has her like take like a needle and she wants her to stab the dove. She wants just she wants her to stab a dove and um like stab your finger with it and then slide it back into the dove. And then um she get the dove. Get the dove, stab the dub, stab yourself, stab the dove. Yeah. Um, it's supposed to be like protect her, and so so yeah, so basically she kind of gives she gives her the clues that she needs to be safe, yeah. And so she says the only thing that's really gonna make it work is if you believe in it. You have to believe your belief holds all the power, and so she kind of tells them to move on, and as they're leaving this woman's house, they see the witch that Tadeo was arguing with in the square the day before he went missing. Yeah, and so Valentine kind of tells her, let's just go. Let's just go. Yeah. And so they get back to her farm, and you know, she's she's distraught, and he's like, We, you know, you got this, it's okay. And she's like, Why do you even care? Why do you care about me? Right. And he answers by just grabbing her and kissing her. Yeah. And he's like, I care about you. Like, and so she ends up like kind of getting like the warm fuzzies, and she's like kind of like, Oh, okay, like maybe Valentine's not as bad as I thought he was.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And so he's like kind of like, just please be safe. I can't, I can't have anything bad happen to you. I just, you know, and she gives him like a kiss back, and then she says, Okay, I'll see you later. And so that's kind of how that ends.
SPEAKER_01Their romance is blossoming.
SPEAKER_02So she's taking so she's taking this like spell thing back.
SPEAKER_01But I'm trying to remember really quickly, like bac going back to like Tadeo in the square.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01The interaction. Do you remember like what he said to Alba and his mom? Like, oh, she just wanted.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so because it was her and uh Valentine that saw him having this like interaction with this woman. And he said that she was trying to sell me something, and I just wasn't interested, and she just wasn't taking no for an answer. Okay. And she kind of like even when she sees Valentine and Alba as they're riding out of the Los Los Pinos, she's kind of like staring them down, and Alba's like staring her down, and she's like, she knows something. Yeah, and Valentine's like, let's not piss off the witches, like we're here, like on their turf, like, let's just go home, let's be respectful. And so she's kind of like, whatever.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, so yeah, so there's so there's that aspect too. So I'm kind of curious to know if this woman had anything to do with it.
SPEAKER_01Um or like or she she she knows or she knows what's going on. I'm kind of I kind of feel like I think it'd be too easy if she was the one.
SPEAKER_02I personally kind of feel like maybe there was something going on between Tadeo and this witch. And maybe he didn't. I don't know. Like, that's kind of like where my thoughts are that like You can't just think of a witch as being like this like ugly old no like I'm pretty sure she's described as like beautiful, you know, she's easy to look at.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um but it's like also the lore of it all is like you is she stealing that youth from someone else? How old is she? What does she really look like?
SPEAKER_02I feel like she's being painted suspiciously on purpose. I don't think she's actually bad. Honestly, with all of this, like my theories as far as like Alba's story goes, I think Arturo at least sent a witch after him or made it look like a witch did it because he has a disdain for witches, he hates them. So I think that Arturo killed the killed Tade Tadeo, killed the horse, killed the goats, and I think he's trying to make it look like it was framed to be the witch. Now, as far as like the rusted scissors go, or I think because there's definitely like look, I'm not saying there's not b both things can be true.
SPEAKER_01They can be bewitched, and Arturo can be taking advantage of that.
SPEAKER_02Well, like that's where I think that maybe the witch that had something to do with Tadeo, like maybe they were romantically involved. She knows that he goes missing. Maybe she has her suspicions about the uncle. Maybe she did, in fact, send something, and maybe it's trying. I don't know, but like that's just my theory, right?
SPEAKER_01Because I feel like this is gonna open up, and the way that it's sounding, the lore of it all, is that this witch is essentially saying that this is like the worst witch that that there is. It's a vampire. Yeah, it's a type of what we call in America a vampire. Yeah, like there's several different kinds of witches. This one's the worst. Yeah. Once it drinks from you, you're fucked.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so it's like, is Arturo a vampire? Did he get turned?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's what I'm just I don't know. I it's hard to tell.
SPEAKER_01Because vampires, they can turn, or what we know, right? They can turn individuals that then follow them forever. Yeah. Or they could just fucking drain you. They get fed in your fucking just bones, like she said. So I'm very curious.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's where I'm like interesting. That like the supernatural part of Alba's story, I don't really have an explanation for quite yet. And then as far as like Minerva goes, I really have no idea where that's going. Like, I don't really know. I can't like even try to guess. I do think that Carolyn has something to do with Ginny's disappearance, and that, but I don't know what we're about to see. What that has to do with Minerva, at least. Like, I don't know why Minerva would be connected with that.
SPEAKER_01But I do think she's definitely gonna be connected somehow because she's an off, she's an offspring of Alba. Yeah. And I bet you because Alba had these visions, Alba is a kind of witch. Yeah, I am curious to know how I think Alba is going to end up having specialties. Like, you know what I mean? She's gonna feel like she's gonna come into her own as soon as she like connects, as we all are. We're all like connecting these dots, right? It's a good book, yeah. Yeah, it's a lot where you're like, okay, once you like figure out how you can come compartmentalize everything, which like lovely Lauren here has given us a character sheet that we'll have to I know. I need to make a couple updates on it, like share with you all because yeah, there's a lot going on, and it's like, whoa, but once you understand, it's just like wow, this would be like a good show. I would love this as a TV show.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Like I was saying, like with like even like with letters, I was like, that would be an amazing show.
SPEAKER_01Like books, somebody just wanna want to make a movie out of stuff. It's like no no no no no no no.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because you're do a show. Do a show, literally written in chapters for a reason. Yeah, yeah. No, I I agree. It's just I yeah, I don't really know where Minerva story is going. And even with like Beatrice, like I can't quite I do think Carolyn has something to do with it.
SPEAKER_01She's telling the story of it.
SPEAKER_02My thought with like the Beatrice thing. She's the writer, like with Carolyn. I think Carolyn either she killed Ginny, and then Ginny's spirit is like restless and angry. And so that's what's going on. And I think that maybe she took over the missing college student, and I believe his name was like Thomas or something like that, the one that's missing in Minerva's timeline. Yeah. I think that she took over him and is trying to get the story out. Like, I don't think that she's trying to hurt Minerva. If like Minerva, I think she's trying to get Minerva's attention. She's like, oh.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, yeah. You're talking about the one from with the book.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, with that, I don't know about that. I think maybe that's that one's malevolent. Whoever that is, I don't know who that is yet. But I do think that with like her feeling the eyes on her and like feeling like being. I think it's Ginny trying to watch or trying to tell her what is going on, what happened.
SPEAKER_01And Minerva just hasn't awakened whatever she needs, yeah, to be able to connect. Yeah, Ginny could connect. She's trying to get Minerva to connect. Yeah. I mean, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_02She could probably tell too that like maybe Miner Min Minerva's got something in her blood, like her grandma. Like maybe, maybe he's like, okay, they're from the same part as close to me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So that's kind of like my theories up to this point. Yeah. I guess we'll see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll tell you when we know in part three, right? Yeah. So let's see here. How dark? Okay, yeah. On a scale of one to ten. How dark do you think that we're gonna get? This is seeming pretty dark. Eight? I'd say an eight, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02An eight. We'll see. I'm kind of also like thinking about like her other book that she did where it kind of ended like it was a good twist.
SPEAKER_01So I have no idea.
SPEAKER_02She's really good with twists. Is she? So I'm kind of curious to see. Well, we have like what's gonna happen here.
SPEAKER_01Quite a few angles we could go. Yeah. Where we're both kind of like, oh, which fork in the road is it gonna be? So that's really good at analyzing theories.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm I don't know. Like I just there's so many different, like you said, so many different roads we could go down that like I would be happy with like whatever she's gonna come up with.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, I'm just curious. We gotta keep it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I say probably an eight as far as like how dark it would be. I think eight. Cause I mean, maybe more. Like so far, like what we've read is like pretty sad and like yeah, dark and like just hopeless. Like, I and I'm curious, I would have loved to have seen how like one. I wonder who Alba ends up with. I will say, please don't touch a hair on Valentine's head. I know. He is a sweet pea. I don't want anything to happen to him. And now that she's like starting to like because we haven't heard love on Urva about a grandpa. Yeah, who was her great great grandfather? Like, so I'm kind of like, please don't touch Valentine's. I know. I love him so much. He's so cute and so sweet and just so supportive. Yeah, he's such a good listener.
SPEAKER_01He's so supportive when everybody else is like telling her how she should be, what she should think, what she should be like, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I feel like he would let her be whatever she wanted to be as his wife.
SPEAKER_01Like he would be very much how Edgar Yates was with Ginny.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownAnyway.
SPEAKER_02So before we let you go today, uh Morgan and I have been keeping like a small secret, you know, it's kind of exciting.
SPEAKER_01But I know, I'm like, how many different ways are we gonna like branch into just like all the areas?
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I think we're ready to like kind of talk about it, I guess. So yeah, do you want to tell them?
SPEAKER_01Let's do it. Wait, no, you you're supposed to, right? Um, no, no, no. Okay, I will, I will. Yeah. I'm like, hold on. So yeah, so we love talking about books, and but we're also huge, huge fans of cinema, right? So we're officially launching a brand new recurring segment that's going to be titled The Cozy Midnight Cinema Society.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But maybe we'll just like drop the cozy. Yeah. We'll just be the mouthful. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. So we know that we're cozy midnight collective. Yeah. We have midnight confessions, which we need yours, by the way. Please send us your stories so we can keep that segment running. Um, and then we we're hoping so that way we don't have to put too much effort into researching. We can just really have it like a community-led segment. And I know, you know, we're growing, we're building, we're very new. Um, but we love to see where you guys can take us with that. Um, and then this will be more of like just the midnight, excuse me, midnight cinema uh society, and we're gonna be just like, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, reviewing. Yeah, whether it's like, you know, like the old cult classics that we all know and love, um, like your favorite scary movie. Scream. Scream, yeah, or um like the new stuff that's coming out. Like we saw, we saw like so far this year, we've seen the doll. At least Dolly Four scary movies. Yeah, we saw we saw Dolly last weekend. Um, we're planning on seeing Undertone, which we're really excited about. Um, watch Scream 7, and then we also watched um uh 28 Years Later. Yes. And so there's like this year, there's a lot of really good scary movies coming out.
SPEAKER_01Like the year of horror, and then we're also like living through horror times, like true fucking horror.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So we kind of figured, like, probably just like once a month, kind of keep it light, um, just because light as in like as much as we can, like as far as like the movies. It's hard to sit down and watch a movie sometimes, but we just figured we'd share with you what we're watching. Maybe we'll post like what are you watching?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a movie list or one, like that. You know, but I think it'd be fun to like review them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think we'll just continue using like our moon rating system just to keep it easy. But um, yeah, but I figured we could we would talk about it, you know, just kind of share briefly like once a month what we watched over the month and yeah, and like maybe put together like a good watch list or something at the end of each month.
SPEAKER_01So yep, so we'll give our honest reviews, we'll break down like the scare factor, like you were saying, and then we'll essentially be able to compare them to the true crime that we're reading about. Yeah, right, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So and it's not just limited to just strictly horror, it could also be like true crime stuff or like documentary, like TV shows as well. Um, I know that like they did the same people that did like I'm like, have you seen yeah, like the same people that did like Dahmer and like the Menendez Brother story and then I'm almost finished with um Gain and Yeah, they're doing Lizzie Borden next. Uh-huh. And I'm very excited to watch that one.
SPEAKER_01Not Gain. I like Morbid, the Morbid Girls like did such a good job diving into Gain that like where I truly understand it all, and I understood it how they made it digestible. That where when I am not making any sense right now, but when I went to go sit down to like watch that docuseries, I just like couldn't make it connect. And I think it's because he's so good looking. And I was like, that's not that's not at all what he looks like. It's like throwing me off because I like right from the beginning, I'm like, I love you.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, and that's where you but you like they fucked me up casting Charlie Hunt.
SPEAKER_01I know they fucked it up. And then also at the same token, it's like he wasn't okay, he's like the worst of the worst, but when he's like medicated, he's a sweet guy. Yeah, he's a he actually is and he's like I'm a fucking monster, and I like deserve to stay exactly where I am. Yeah, but I'm talking about Gacy. Um, it's called, it's they put them out at the same time. There's like on the documentary and the docuseries, their name, yeah, and they're both have the same name. Um, but it's like evil.
unknownOh my god, help me out here.
SPEAKER_02I can't tell you the name because I'll be honest, Gacy freaks me out. And I know that that's like the docuseries.
SPEAKER_01So like the actor does such a good job.
SPEAKER_02How do they play these roles? That's my question.
SPEAKER_01No, and I think about that and it's so fucking detailed, and then they bring in like all obviously all the information's accurate, but then you'll get clips, like, so you'll watch something that's been like acted out, and then they'll clip in the real news clipping of the sheriff of the mayor, and then they'll like show that like in the end credits for the episode, yeah. And then show the real victims the real photo, like, and it's just like it's bravo, it's well done. It like shakes you to your core, and and this guy was just gross, so fucking sad, yeah. But I love watching that kind of stuff. Um, but it's also really nice to like step outside and watch like Dolly, for example, or Scream. Scream is a better example where it's like it's fucked up and it's scary, but it didn't happen in real life.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because real life is just it's scarier. It truly is.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So anyway.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Tangent.
SPEAKER_02No, but we're many tangents.
SPEAKER_01Can I go to the street?
SPEAKER_02It's exciting because like you know, we like to go to the movies and like it's just kind of like our nice little it's a nice little break, and like usually we go see like so far, like the movies you you and I have seen, like together, like without like the girls, because we take the girls to the movie sometimes. It's usually been scary, like a spooky movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you tried it. Oh, um, the Dracula movie. Oh, don't get me started. I'm gonna start crying. Oh god, I loved that movie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I figured we would also tie in like supernatural, like cute look like we'll we'll do what we want to do. Yeah, it's a cinema clip. That's that's that's all that's all that matters. It's the cinema society, excuse me. Cinema society.
SPEAKER_01And we will watch what we want to watch, god damn it. And we'll and we might throw in some fucking romance movies.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like we saw um, what was it last year?
SPEAKER_01The uh it's it's mom brain, it's like a real thing with like Chris Evans and um Pedro Pascal.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes, yeah, that one that was like a horror movie in its own right, though, for a second.
SPEAKER_01Because you're like that's like up with all these like movie titles too, and then the names of the actors. I get so confused, but it was really good. Yeah, I mean Pedro Pascal, right?
SPEAKER_02Is Pedro Pascal? Like, that's uh need we say more. Like I'm like, she's gotta.
SPEAKER_01It's so sad. I'm just like, oh. Do you ever just sit there and then like flashes of the movie go back in your mind and you're like, he broke his fucking bones to grow taller? Yeah. Poor guy. That story was so wild. But going back really quick, what was the name of the movie that we were briefly touching base on that will make you cry? What was it? The Dracula movie? Is it just Dracula? Dracula. It was Dracula.
SPEAKER_02I think it's specifically called like Dracula a Love Story. Oh, it's so good. It was so good.
SPEAKER_01It was like it made me so sad. You're like, just give can they just can they have a just leave him alone?
SPEAKER_02Like he like they like they didn't hurt anyone like on the way back.
SPEAKER_01Like so good.
SPEAKER_02The gypsies loved him, like he was paying them, like, and he he gave them enough money to like torture Dracula.
SPEAKER_01It was very much like he was a good Dracula. Leave him alone.
SPEAKER_02He just wanted his love. She remembered they barely got home, and they were just like, ugh, it made me so sad.
SPEAKER_01Just let him have their moment at least.
SPEAKER_02My god. He didn't even kill like her expo. Like he could have. He was like, he was like, I promised I wouldn't kill you, and you're making it really hard for me to go home. I just want to be with my woman. Like, how hard is that? Like, how that was hard where you're like, Yeah, I want popcorn now. I'm gonna buy that movie, I think. Oh yeah. Just so I can keep crying about it later.
SPEAKER_01I know. I know. Um, okay, so we're gonna wrap this up for you guys because we gotta go. I've literally hoped that we'll be able to cut out the screams of my child, of our children. They're all three in there. Maybe it adds to the horror element. And if you still, yeah, I know, but if you still hear, if you hear her, just know she cries about everything, okay? She's fine. Like she's totally fine. I'm not ignoring my child who's actually needing help. Look at that majestic man.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But she literally, like, you'll think she's like cut a finger off. That kind of cry for everything though. So I know she's not truly in danger. I've got, you know, we've got the other kids in there with her. She's fine. She just wants, she's a mommy's girl. Okay. She just wants her mom, and it's like, just give me a minute. Yeah. So, but yeah, so we already kind of touched on midnight confessions. We need you guys to send your stories. I'm gonna ask you like one last time, please keep sharing, keep watching, keep downloading, keep listening, keep it real. If you got a scary story, like you were almost pushed down the stairs by a ghost.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Or you were out clubbing and a guy tried to fucking roofie you, or you it was Halloween and somebody was talking you. If you want to just talk some shit about this motherfucker who doesn't know how to drive, pissed you off.
SPEAKER_02Oh, we probably have a good one for next time that we can talk about her school pickup. Okay.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna piss up. Oh my god, nightmare on an elementary school ground. Yeah. Three times, four times now, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Is that what we figured out? Oh my god. And then thank God she's been there for two out of the four. Cause I'm like, I am not doing anything wrong. Why does everybody hate me? Everybody hates me. Anyways, it's a real thing. I I don't know. I have nothing else to say, but you want to take it over for email?
SPEAKER_02So, um, some of you who have um accepted our email subscription request, pretty much. We're gonna start like a newsletter. Um, you know, we'll kind of I think we want to start moving like doing like our reading guides through the newsletter.
SPEAKER_01Yes, as well as um in the reading guide, again, that's just how we're breaking down the book the book of the month. Yeah. And the sections that we do for reading each week.
SPEAKER_02It's not super sophisticated, it's just it's just Makes it easier to read it and then talk about it. Um, and then just kind of like announcements through there as well. So that's kind of like what we're kind of going for. We're still gonna be active on socials, yes. Um, like you know, we'll still put stuff out there as well, too.
SPEAKER_01So if you join Patreon, you're actually gonna get extra stuff, yeah. Right. So that only Patreon users get.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And then I figured I would do like probably like you know, character sheets, just kind of do like kind of explain who's who for those of you who aren't maybe reading the book, and you're kind of like, okay, so go join Patreon if you want that as well. With so-and-so again, and then you're like, Oh, that's right. I have this character sheet that I get emailed to my inbox.
SPEAKER_01Nice, and it's really beautiful, it'll be done up on like Canva. It's gonna match our whole cozy vibe. You're just you're gonna love it. And then website is still under construction. Bear with us. We're only two moms, like trying to like yeah, look at the world stuff going on. Yeah, yeah. We have all these avenues, but we're hanging in there. Most importantly, our mental health is still in one piece for now. Um, but Etsy, we're gonna get the shop up. It's gonna be live within the next 24 to 48 hours. So by the time you see this, it'll be live. Go check out some of our merch that we got together so you can try to help support us and offset the costs of what we're pouring into this business that we love so much and we want to keep it going. Yeah. So, anyways, I think that like about sums it up. It is Sunday March 15th. I almost said 16th. Yeah, 15th. We just survived a Friday the 13th. What else is going on?
SPEAKER_02Friday the 13th, though. I was born on a Friday the 13th.
SPEAKER_01Supposedly Netanyahu was fucking murdered and we're trying to like survive whether or not is it AI or is it not AI? Like, what's going on with that? Uh, we're still at war with Iran. Uh, gasoline is supposed to be like skyrocketing up. I guess we're supposed to be like buying Bitcoin and um don't forget to have all your MREs, ammo, fucking water, food supply for the next like six months to a year. Maybe a zombie apocalypse is coming too. What else can we fucking throw on? This is not real life. We are living in the times. So hopefully one day, kids, you're watching, we are fucking trying our best to keep you alive while all this it's a literal horror Joe, like novel. Like you open, close the door. Don't open the door, don't go out there. It's a fucking mess. We're gonna stay right here in our spooky little coven and you guys can fucking join us.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, okay. Yeah. Anyway, so join the collective with the email.
SPEAKER_01Join the society. Yeah, we we would love to have you and follow, like, subscribe, buy, support, all the things. Everything, please. And then remember, yeah. Yeah. Some stories are meant to haunt you.
