a battle for all of us. 00:04:45.439 --> 00:05:00.079 For those that bear the name of Christ, it is a daily battle that must be fought, waged, so that we don't put ourselves out there instead of the has called his followers to do. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:57.600 We're in a section of Mark's gospel, chapter 8, 9, and 10, where Jesus has turned his attention to training his disciples, to teaching his 00:09:12.399 --> 00:09:16.240 In our text for this morning, there are no miraculous events. 00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:21.279 Jesus doesn't perform a miracle, he doesn't heal anybody, he doesn't cast out a demon. 00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:24.320 He simply has a conversation with his disciples. 00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:29.279 He simply has a conversation with the men who are following him and learning from him. 00:09:29.759 --> 00:09:32.320 And in that conversation, we see three things. 00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:40.240 We see a prediction of suffering, we see a preoccupation with status, and we still see Mount Hermon. 00:09:51.679 --> 00:10:06.480 They've been in the very extreme north, and now they're making their way south, back towards Capernaum, back to their home base of ministry for the last two years in the region of Galilee. 00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:14.480 This is his final stop as he is now about to head towards Judea and Jerusalem for the very last time. 00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:34.879 As Jesus is taking his disciples to Capernaum, he knows within six months he will be arrested, he will be tried, he will be convicted, he will be crucified, he will die, he will be buried, and he will be resurrected. 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:38.000 He knows this is what lies ahead. 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:46.320 He has prepared himself for it, and now he begins to prepare his disciples for what lies helping them as they move towards the cross. 00:10:58.480 --> 00:11:08.000 The cross is always prevalent in Mark's gospel, but from this point forward, the shadow of the cross looms over everything that takes place. 00:11:08.720 --> 00:11:20.799 This conversation, Jesus is starting to help his disciples understand exactly what is going to take place, and so we see this prediction of suffering. in the Old Testament. 00:13:23.679 --> 00:13:30.879 In Daniel chapter 7, it describes the Messiah, the Son of Man, approaching the throne of Almighty God. 00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:33.840 And there he is given honor. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:35.679 There he is given glory. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:37.679 There he is given dominion. 00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:44.480 There he is given a kingdom to reign over, and all the nations of the earth come and worship him. 00:13:44.879 --> 00:13:50.159 And it tells us in Daniel chapter 7 that his reign will never end. 00:13:51.519 --> 00:14:07.039 When he referred to himself as Son of Man, which was his personal preference for referring to himself, and he did so rightly, he was claiming to be the Messiah who one day would reign, every nation would worship him, and his reign would never come to an end. 00:14:07.200 --> 00:14:17.360 And the disciples, after two years, have finally gotten to the point where they recognize that the man they serve is actually the Messiah. 00:14:17.840 --> 00:14:22.240 They believe him to be the Son of Man of Daniel chapter 7. 00:14:22.639 --> 00:14:24.799 That part they're not confused about. 00:14:32.080 --> 00:14:38.320 The part they're confused about is when it says, and he will be handed over and killed. 00:14:39.360 --> 00:14:42.480 He said, the Son of Man is going to be delivered over. 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:54.799 The word delivered there is a technical term meaning a criminal who is delivered over to trial and judgment. 00:14:56.320 --> 00:14:58.559 This is what they tripped over. 00:14:59.120 --> 00:15:02.480 This is what they could not comprehend. 00:15:03.759 --> 00:15:15.840 They could not comprehend the Son of Man who is going to reign and rule forever, being delivered over, handed over, and killed. 00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:20.559 They surely had to be thinking, who would do that? 00:15:21.519 --> 00:15:25.039 Who would hand over our Messiah for death? 00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:27.919 Who in the world would do that? 00:15:28.080 --> 00:15:29.519 No one would do that. 00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:40.000 And yet, as we continue in our gospel and as we know the story, there's one of his own named Judas who does exactly that. 00:15:41.039 --> 00:15:42.480 He turns them over. 00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:50.639 There's the religious leaders of the day, the scribes and the Pharisees, who don't like Jesus, and he's threatening their authority and their power. 00:15:50.720 --> 00:15:51.759 So what do they do? 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:53.519 They turn him over. 00:15:55.679 --> 00:16:11.360 There's the Roman governor named Pilate, who's in a rock and a hard place, having to keep the peace, but finding no guilt in Jesus, and yet the threat of the Jews rising up if he does not do something about Jesus. 00:16:12.159 --> 00:16:13.759 What does Pilate do? 00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:16.399 He delivers him up. 00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:26.000 But there's one other that delivers Jesus up that we really need to understand. 00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:30.080 It's not Judas. 00:16:34.399 --> 00:16:35.919 It's not Pilate. 00:16:38.240 --> 00:16:42.080 It's Almighty God who delivered Jesus up. 00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:48.399 It's his own father who handed him over for judgment. 00:16:50.720 --> 00:17:07.200 Peter after the resurrection, after the ascension and Pentecost, the Holy Spirit has fallen, and Simon Peter, the same one who just a few days before had said, You're the Christ, the Son of the living God. 00:17:09.519 --> 00:17:19.200 That Peter stood up before a group of people, and he gave one of the greatest messages, one of the greatest sermons ever preached. 00:17:19.759 --> 00:17:22.799 I want you to hear just a few words of that message. 00:17:24.480 --> 00:17:27.200 Men of Israel, listen to these words. 00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:38.079 Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through him in your midst, just as you yourselves know. 00:17:39.200 --> 00:17:47.839 This man was delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God. 00:17:48.960 --> 00:17:54.079 You nailed him to a cross by the hands of godless men and put him to death. 00:17:54.319 --> 00:18:03.119 But God raised him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it is impossible for him to be held in its power. 00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:06.240 He said, Men of Israel, you know who Jesus is. 00:18:06.480 --> 00:18:09.920 He came, he is God, he did things only God could do. 00:18:10.160 --> 00:18:11.200 But what 00:19:04.240 Except in Isaiah 53, he's a suffering servant, who was wounded for our transgressions by the plan of God. 00:19:05.519 --> 00:19:12.640 The same Son of Man that we read about, who is that to his own son? 00:20:25.039 --> 00:20:30.480 Romans chapter 4, verse 25 says, He was delivered for our transgressions. 00:20:31.119 --> 00:20:32.720 Why did God hand him over? 00:20:32.960 --> 00:20:34.160 Because of our sin. 00:20:35.519 --> 00:20:39.839 And he was raised for our justification. 00:20:41.039 --> 00:20:43.200 He was delivered over because of our sin. 00:20:43.440 --> 00:20:53.200 He was crucified, taking our place, but he was raised back to life so that we might be justified with our Heavenly Father. 00:20:54.400 --> 00:21:04.640 This is what they kept tripping over because they had preconceived ideas of who the Messiah was, and none of this fit it. 00:21:05.279 --> 00:21:11.839 They were good with a Son of Man coming and reigning forever, but that Son of 00:21:52.799 And they they they were afraid to ask. 00:21:53.920 --> 00:21:59.359 Mark tells us they didn't understand, but verse 32 says they were afraid to ask questions. 00:22:00.240 --> 00:22:02.319 Why were they afraid to ask? 00:22:03.200 --> 00:22:04.960 I can come up with two reasons. 00:22:05.039 --> 00:22:06.799 I think the first reason is this. 00:22:07.039 --> 00:22:14.000 Just a few days earlier, Jesus asked the disciples, Who do people say that I am? 00:22:14.400 --> 00:22:18.960 And they said, Some people think you're Elijah, some people who think you're another prophet, think you're John the Baptist. 00:22:19.039 --> 00:22:20.960 And he said, Fine, who do you say that I am? 00:22:21.119 --> 00:22:23.119 And Simon Peter stood up and said, What? 00:22:23.279 --> 00:22:25.599 You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. 00:22:26.559 --> 00:22:28.000 Remember what Jesus said next? 00:22:29.200 --> 00:22:30.160 Good job, Simon. 00:22:30.240 -->
