All in favor, let it be known by saying aye.

SPEAKER_03

Or in the committee meeting. After the official motion to adjourn, the council's continue work on behalf of the city and its residents. Welcome to the Motion to Adjourn podcast. I am your host, Anaya Kenyon. I serve as project manager for the Birmingham City Council. Today we are diving into some of the most significant items that were mentioned during Tuesday's council meeting. On Tuesday, the council approved an ordinance to further amend the grant fund budget for the fiscal year ending June 30th, 2027. The amendment appropriates over $2.7 million for the Transportation 19th Street Inslee Avenue to Bush Boulevard project. This funding, provided through a grant agreement with LDOT, will support street improvements including paving, sidewalks, curb, and gutter work, and storm drainage upgrades in accordance with the awarded grant. Now, let's hear from Councillor Sonia Smith.

Bush Boulevard really is the entry point from going from Birmingham Southern into District 8. And so it's really important that we keep those areas nice, keep them beautified, and keep them inviting just so that residents feel feel comfortable where they live and happy where they live, but then also to create an inviting space that just keeps everyone safe. Primarily with sidewalks where maybe tree roots would have overgrown and then cause some issues with safety. So really a lot of it is our safety concerns. Also, just people wanting to really enjoy the boulevard and so having additional seating that's there that allows people to be able to sit and enjoy the beauty of the area is something that people have expressed an interest in.

SPEAKER_03

This is a great step toward enhancing safety, accessibility, and quality of life for residents. The council approved a resolution formalizing a cooperative agreement between the City of Birmingham and the Alabama and Tennessee River Railway. Through this partnership, both parties will work together to reconstruct and upgrade five grade crossings near Sloth's Furnaces and the 35th Street Overhead Ridge, locations where city streets intersect the Alabama and Tennessee River Railway tracks. Now let's hear from Councillor Darrell O'Quinn, Chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

SPEAKER_01

So the agreement that was on today's agenda establishes those as official rail crossings and spells out the responsibilities of the railroad and the city with regard to maintenance and other things. So more importantly, establishes those as official rail crossings and gets them in the national register. So that's what that was about.

SPEAKER_03

This initiative represents a meaningful investment in safer, more reliable transportation routes for our communities. By improving these key crossings, it enhances connectivity, reduces potential hazards, and supports ongoing revitalization efforts in those areas.
