Hey yo, what is up, everybody? What's going on? It's your girl Jay. And it is Sample Saturday. That's right. It's time for another edition of Sample This, where I take a song that I love or I know or you know, and we break down what sample the song is using. Because sometimes you might know, sometimes you might not know. So today we are gonna listen to this song. Tell me, have you heard it before?
SPEAKER_03I wanna be deep. You can do me for me. Let me ask you a question. Do you mind? Let me ask you a question. Is that a white? Let me ask you a question if I like. Is it mine? Is it mine? Huh? Can I ask you something before we skip to the part with a passion coming before we get to the dog flash song?
SPEAKER_04Alright. If you haven't heard that song before, that song is Is It Mine by Coco Jones, featuring Lady London. Now, some of you might not have heard this song before because I don't believe it was released. This is off Coco Jones' album, Um, Why Not More. And it's one of my favorite songs because as soon as I heard this song, I said, Ah, I know where I'm hearing this melody from. I know it because it's from one of my favorite artists. Did you guys catch it? Because this song was sampled, or there's an interpolation of that song, and it's a very, very popular song. So, do you know what it is? Well, let's check it out.
SPEAKER_00An angel has always been thought to be one of God's most precious works. That's just how she had you fooled. She was an angel in disguise. Hurt and pain could never come from her. So you left me only to find that hurt and pain involved her. But now you see your mistake. And now you see your angel was a fake. My love was never mistaken.
SPEAKER_02And most importantly, that's right.
SPEAKER_04That is a song from my girl, Brandy. The song is Angel in Disguise. It was released January 21st, 1999. It is from her album Never Say Never. Um, it was written by Rodney Jerkins, Fred Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels, Tracy Hale, and Trey V Terman. Um, Angel in Disguise, I there's not a lot you can more that I can say about Angel in Disguise other than it was a jam. The beat was so unique, and that's why I was able to pick that out. As soon as I heard that on a Coco Jones album, I said, Oh, I know what that's from. Now, this interpolation, they did not give credit uh w to this artist. And I'll find out in a lot of these songs that I do that I'm like, I look through the song credits and I'm like, they didn't really credit the people who who wrote these songs so or came up with these songs. But I guess in an interpolation, you don't necessarily have to because you can hear the slight difference in the way that they used it on Coco Jones um song versus the way it's it's used in the original song, Angel in Disguise. The melody is a little bit different. The it's almost like they took a little bit of the musicality from The Boy's Mind and put it on Angel in Disguise, uh sped it up a little bit, and made that song. That's how it sounds to my ear. But um, Angel in Disguise is a really dope song. Like I said, sung, sang, sang, sung by um Brandy with background vocals of Joe. And I don't they did say the song was released. It peaked at okay, it peaked at number 72 on the Billboard Heart What Hot 100. It became Brandy's first song to chart with that without an actual single release or video. Didn't I know that? On the hot um RB and hip-hop songs charts, the song peaked at number 17, becoming Brandy's eighth consecutive top 20 songs. So again, I tell you guys, I listened to these songs and I don't remember if they were released or not because I would listen to these four albums or listen to these songs a lot, um, not realizing that they were never released. So reading this now, I see that Angel in Disguise was never released, and I'm thinking about it. Yes, of course it wasn't released, but it is okay. Sorry if y'all hear that noise. Is my lawn is being my lawn is being cut right now, and so they're really going to town over here by my window. But regardless, I didn't realize this song was not released, so uh pretty cool information. But as always, you know, that's that was that. I hope you guys um give both the songs a listen. Angel in Disguise is an oldie but goodie, still uh still something you can jam today. And Coco Jones is pretty new. If you haven't heard her album or heard that song, go ahead and give it a listen. So that's all I have. I'll talk to y'all later, and I'll see y'all next Saturday. Peace out.
SPEAKER_01She left you and die. Take fire and run away with it. No, no.
