Welcome to the Advancing Pilot Podcast!

This is the podcast for aspiring Commercial pilots and flight instructors — or anyone interested in becoming a safer, more capable, and more confident pilot.  Our goal is to help fill in the knowledge gaps that often exist between required training and real-world flying.

Before we begin, a quick reminder:
The ideas discussed here are not a substitute for training with a qualified flight instructor. Use them as a starting point for discussion with your CFI.

In this episode:

Proficiency isn’t static. It:

  • Builds with repetition and exposure
  • Gradually fades with disuse
  • Can peak and decline within a single training session

How can we leverage this:

  • Perform a preflight proficiency check
  • Leverage the "warm up"
  • Be mindful of task-saturation
  • Perform a fatigue and human factor check
  • Take a break instead of over-training

This week's episode adds a new feature called "Tales from the PHAK":

Key takeaways from our brief excerpt from Chapter 2 (beginning on page 24) of the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge include:

  • Situational awareness requires understanding why things are happening — not just reacting.
  • Fixation and task saturation reduce safety margins.
  • Fatigue and workload can cause decision-making based on incomplete information.
  • High workload leads to working harder while accomplishing less.
  • When overwhelmed: Stop. Think. Slow down. Prioritize.
