"It's not real money." Really?
For years, many business owners have dismissed cryptocurrency as gambling, a fad, or something for tech bros and extreme risk-takers. But while you might have been dismissing it, major financial institutions have been building infrastructure for it. Countries are adding Bitcoin to their reserves, and everyday people are funding their lifestyles with it.
This might surprise you: digital assets are now classified as the fifth asset class globally. Regulatory frameworks are now in place. Major banks have seen the writing on the wall and they're on board. And if you're still treating cryptocurrency like a curiosity instead of a strategic opportunity, you're leaving money on the table.
In this episode, Fiercely Financial host Kate De Jong sits down with co-host and cryptocurrency expert Dee Skillicorn from Digi-Secure to demystify digital assets for business owners. We discuss the reasons why this legitimate asset class is already here, and how to enter it safely.
Dee's journey into crypto began with a deeply personal mission: keeping her brain active while caring for her father with dementia. What started as self-education turned into a nine-year deep dive, thousands of hours helping others navigate the space, and eventually building Digi-Secure, a business focused on one critical thing: keeping people safe and protected in the crypto world.

Key Insight
Cryptocurrency isn't about whether you believe in it. It's about whether you're positioned for a financial system that's already shifting. The question isn't "Is this real?" The question is: "Do I understand it well enough to make an informed decision?"

You're bringing in the money, but are you building wealth? Welcome to Fiercely Financial, bringing you insights from top experts to help you shift from business owner to wealth creator. We're your hosts, Kate De Jong. And I'm Dee Skillicorn. And we're on a mission to help more business owners build long-term wealth. Let's dive in. Hello everyone and welcome back to the Fiercely Financial podcast. I'm Kate De Jong and I'm here again with my lovely co-host Dee Skillicorn from Digi Secure. Morning, Dee. Morning, sweetheart. How are you in the WA? Really good. Yeah, and I think it's nice and warm in Queensland as well, is that right? Damn warm and damn cloudy and humid. Yeah, right. Okay, we've been through the humidity. We're back into the dry, thank goodness. But it's like it's um stifling, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's exhausting. I find it really hard going, I've got to tell you.
SPEAKER_00But Dee, this is exciting because this is your episode. It's just you and I, you are the expert in this situation. We've had so many good experts join us so far on tax, on SMSFs, on um alternative assets, on property. And now we get to explore the world of cryptocurrency, which is your um world of expertise. And today's um title of our episode is The Crypto Opportunity: Why Business Owners Can't Afford to Ignore Digital Assets. And I love that because you are flipping it on the head from um, here's something that you might be interested in exploring to. No, you can't actually ignore this anymore if you want to thrive in the um in the new world.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's already happening. So business owners of all sizes need to start looking at this and um how it affects their business.
SPEAKER_00So, Dave, before we dive into all the the good knowledge and wisdom that you have, um you know, we're gonna talk through some of the myths out there that crypto is a form of gambling. You know, a lot of people think it's it's high risk and um, you know, very scary. A lot of people I talk to say they don't have the time to to look into it and it's too hard. Um, so we're gonna talk through that and then um you're gonna talk us through how to get started and then why your business is centered around the security side of things because it is just so critical in the crypto space to have all your um cybersecurity systems in place to find out. Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely. So, yeah, start by telling us how you got into crypto in the first place.
SPEAKER_01Um, oh no, look, it actually genuinely started with dementia. Um, and it was it's a very simple story. So my dad um was just starting dementia. He'd just had an early diagnosis of it. My grandmother had passed away from dementia, and and it wasn't for any other reason that I wanted to keep my brain active. And I decided on picking something that was weird and wonderful. I I didn't like stocks and shares, I didn't, it didn't light me up and make me interested. I sure as hell wasn't doing a crossword, and Seduco just was beyond me. So I just looked at and went, well, what am I gonna do? And I always had an interest in what actually made cryptocurrency and blockchain tick. Like, what was it? So I started down the path of educating myself. Well, that was a nightmare. Like I went down so many rabbit holes, and there's some really dark things down some of those rabbit holes, I might tell you.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01Um, so it was to keep my brain active. That was the first stepping stone. While you were caring for your dad, and well, at the time he wasn't with us, it was still early stages and he was still at home with mum.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01Um, but he had a car accident not long after um I'd started in crypto. He had a car accident and the knock on his head actually brought the dementia forward. Like it can be um with trauma. And it became very, very difficult for mum to keep him at home. So we actually had him with us for a period of time. Um, and it was the most there's nothing I don't know how to describe it. It's it's not a trauma, it's a it's a joy to look after your parents at a certain stage in their life if you've got that relationship with your parents, and and we did, but it's also soul destroying to just watch the intelligence and the smarts go out of somebody and the light die in their eyes.
SPEAKER_00Oh gosh, yeah, I can imagine.
SPEAKER_01Like it's it's not fun, guys. Um, so yes, it got to a point where I could not do that either, and it was starting to affect our business, our marriage, and moving forward. So we did make the decision as a family, not just one of us, it was as a family that he needed to go into care. And it was the most very average experience of my life. There's nothing special about putting your parent into a care, and there's nothing special about the roles being reversed and they're holding your hand to cross the street. So you know what what time you've got nothing to do with crypto, but what time you've got with your parents, value it and value the time of your loved ones because it's only for a short period and they're gone. Yeah. Yeah. And um, so from there, I started to investigate, you know, what is blockchain? What is cryptocurrency? How does it work? How do you actually use it in real case use? And what I did discover is that about 90% of the coins that are in crypto have absolutely no use. They're about as useful as tits on a bull. So I'm I'm going to say that, and I still say that 10 years later, um, or nearly 10 years later. So once I've discovered that there was quality in the projects in some of them, and I understood and learned and taught myself how to do that, COVID came. Right. And then through the COVID period, um, obviously we were all at home all over the world, and you know, things changed. And I kept getting contacted because by this stage I'd worked out how to shift cryptocurrency around and what to do with it and do all these things. And people were calling me to solve challenges like, oh, how do I get it from here? How do I do this? What's this wallet? What's that thing? Even ringing up and asking or zooming and asking about what the terminology was. Like, I don't understand these words, what are they? So I did that for about two years, and it got up to the stage where I was doing about 20 hours a week for absolutely no funds whatsoever. I was just doing it because I thought I thought it was the right thing to do. Um, and then I, you know, one time sort of ticked and I went, hang on, I can I can monetize this. So we turned it into a very practical, user-friendly course, and that's where we are today. Um in amongst all of this, I discovered also that there was another way to live financially alternative to the mainstream banking system. And it and no matter what your belief systems are between fiat or normal money and the cryptocurrency, it is there is a change in the guard. Yeah, there's a change in the guard financially in the big banks as well. Um, so there's so many other things that are out there now that I discovered the cryptocurrency was uh available to be used for. And then I worked out that I could actually spend it and I can use it in everyday currency. So once all of these things sort of came together, we built the course out over a couple of um a couple of years, and now we've got a team behind us. It's not just me, I can't deal with the volume, guys. It's just got beyond ridiculous. And so it's become it's become a lifestyle. So now what we've done is that we're predominantly in the cryptocurrency market. Um, and just so you know, we do have a traditional construction company. My husband is a builder, um, and he is exiting the construction company this year to support me. Right. Um so yeah, it's been an interesting journey, and I've made lots of mistakes, by the way. We've we've done lots of really good things, but we've made lots of mistakes and so you learn, isn't it? And then you can't generally I think what we're trying to do is make sure that others don't make the same mistakes either.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, which is the value in bringing, you know, working with someone like yourself, you've made the the expensive mistakes that can help us avoid most of them. Yeah, yeah. And so when you were exploring and educating yourself on the blockchain and cryptocurrencies, and you discovered that 90% of the coins are useless. Um what did you learn and how could you explain to people who are unsure of what the blockchain is and cryptocurrency? Could you give us a layman's term explanation of how it works?
SPEAKER_01This is so basic, guys. Like honestly, think of the blockchain as a series of highways. They're all different different highways. Think of cryptocurrencies as the cars that travel on those highways. That's pretty much how you need to see it. And that's as basic as I can give it to you. Yeah. Um, and what you've got to realize is that in between there might be toll roads, and those toll roads are things like gas fees, um, which is is a term that we use in crypto. So when I when we actually train and educate people, we try and break it down into really simple terms. So another example would be a wallet address. Now, if you saw that on a screen, it's about this bloody long and terrifying all of you, right? That terrifies me. But in simple terms, that's just a BSB and a bank account number.
SPEAKER_00A bit more complicated one, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you've got to, and so when you break that down into layman's terms, um, Kate, it makes it more available for people to understand what it is. And I'm dead certain that a heap of men got together at the start of the journey of cryptocurrency and did all these big fancy words just to confuse us. I'm positive. Yeah, yeah. Because a lot of the words really do relate to stuff in our normal everyday life, we just have got to work out the terminology.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I know when I was trying to educate myself on it, the part that I really found fascinating was the fact that once um once a piece of real estate on the blockchain is developed, right? So um, and and it's all this is all computer coding, right? And mathematical equations.
SPEAKER_01And I mean, I don't understand it fully done by way smarter people than you and I.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But what what I loved about it, someone explained it as being like a vending machine. So once it's on the blockchain, it's unchangeable. Like you, it's like a vending machine. You can see it through the glass and you can choose it, but you can't change what's behind it in the vending machine because that is set in stone and can never be changed.
SPEAKER_01Correct, correct. And that's smart contracts. That's exactly what you're talking about, is a smart contract. Um, and you write a very big word that they use called irremutable. Right. So that's the very big long word. What it means is it basically the ledger can never be changed.
SPEAKER_00So once the the the transaction is done, it is set in stone for yeah, which makes it very secure because um what you buy is is what you get and that will never change, right? Correct.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And it's also very transparent if you know where to look. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. So that's one thing is that the the contracts can't be changed um once they're in place, um, which gives it that system integrity, right? And the other thing I loved was about the fact that Bitcoin is a finite resource, as in um we are getting to the end of the Bitcoin mining process, right? A bit like you would mine for gold, but these are all mathematical equations that solve a problem that becomes a Bitcoin. Like that's also you know, something beyond you and I, it's the IT gurus that understand and the mathematicians that understand all that. But I guess my point being um it takes energy to mine Bitcoin. Um and and it it's uh we it it has a lifespan, so we are coming to the end. Is that right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it won't be until look, I can't remember the exact date if it was, I think it's 2047. It's somewhere landlord. So that's about 20 years away. So um, you know, we we're guessing. Um, so yes, you're right, it does have a finite resource, which is one of the reasons that Bitcoin has become so stable, if you want to call it. It's now it's now considered digital gold and it's considered a store of value. So not only is it a financial system if you use it correctly, it is a store of value value, and it is really that is what it's used for now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and it's a it's just a quality product. Yeah, it's a quality product.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, what makes it quality aside from the fact that it's unchangeable, it's it's um, it's finite. What are the other qualities?
SPEAKER_01Uh look, there's a heap of qualities that go into your Bitcoin. What is really good, like for people who want to understand, is there's several super really easy books to read on the Bitcoin methodology. Right. You can get them on now. I can't remember the titles right off the top of my head. But if you go there, um, if you go into that, you'll be able to have a look at you just go into what are the bookstores online? Um Amazon. Amazon, yeah. And you just put in simple book Bitcoin, or you know, Bitcoin uh simply explained, and it'll come up with a couple of books in there. Right. Now we give them to our clients and our students or whatever the hell you want to call them, colleagues, whatever, and we get them to read that to understand it. Because in fairness, Bitcoin is like the start of it all. It's the granddaddy of everything. The mothership, right? Yeah, it's like the mothership, and it's developed itself over time. So it's it's super interesting to see how the changes in Bitcoin. And I've seen so many changes in nine years of watching it go up and down in a couple of bear runs and a bull run and a couple of bull runs, and you know, you look at what it's doing. But fundamentally, it's an unchangeable peer-to-peer product. So it let's say, for example, Kate, I wanted to engage your services. Um, I could quite simply pay you when there's no middleman involved. Yes. And that can be done globally, and that was the whole function of cryptocurrency was to be borderless.
SPEAKER_00Right, and sovereign or autonomous, as in no middleman, and like you said, it's peer-to-peer, it's transaction-to-transaction, person-to-person movement of value without interference from banks and systems.
SPEAKER_01Correct. And there was no third parties involved. Um, I could, you could be in WA and I could be here, you could give me your wallet address and I can have it to you within minutes. Within minutes, the speed of it is certainly very impressive. The other part of it is that there's just there's it's so cost effective. Yeah. Like if you go through our traditional systems, it can take up to two weeks for me to get the money overseas. Um and we've had this experience with my husband's bank account, Huey, which is overseas. Um and it takes two weeks for the funds to get to us. If it's within the Australian system, it could be three working days. But I can get that money to you in 30 seconds. Yes. And it and it like the cents in the dollar. Yeah. So it's really it's really people understanding what it is and where it where it can lead them. And Bitcoin is just the granddaddy of them all. It's where we hold value. Um, when we're in in times of um uh you know, the market's changing, which it is at the moment, you'll see shifts into Bitcoin, same as we see shifts into bullion as well.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So yeah, it's it's wherever people feel is the most reliable value holding asset. Correct.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, fascinating. So um I guess I uh bring that up to help people sort of demystify some of the, you know, a lot of people think it it is gambling, but it's actually very strategic, um, incredibly well thought out, well planned system.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Um you know, the whole mystery about the the the founder is at Satoshi or Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And that look, that's a puzzle that's never been solved. There's been more controversy over that subject than there has been over cryptocurrency. Yeah. Um, but you're right, it is to demystify it. And yes, if you're involved in 90% of the coins, it is gambling, and that's a choice you can make. However, by having a sensible plan moving forward, it is just an asset, another asset class. And you can mitigate risk by using some common sense um methodology in crypto.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yes, and that's what we'll get into. And um, so before we get onto that, have talk to us a little bit more about the inevitability of Bitcoin or the blockchain becoming the new way.
SPEAKER_01We're look, we're already seeing in the banking industry, or let's say the financial industry globally, where we're already seeing that it's happening. So blockchain has been used as part of payment rails. You just have to look at Ripple as a good example, XRP, um, which was designed to be part of the ISO 2022 courts. Now there's a number of those that are involved in it, and they have to go through a process to get into that system, but they are there to go between the rails between um TradFi, which is traditional finance over here, and go over to DeFi, which is decentralized finance here. So there's a bridge, right? And that's where a lot of these um these particular coins have case use, so they actually solve a problem, right? And they help a lot of the financial institutions um deal with their transactions at speed from next to nothing, and no downtime. And so and it's also transparent. Yeah, not all financial institutions want that, but I'm just saying that that is that is the case. So blockchain is here and it's solving lots of other challenges. It's not just in the in the banking industry that we're seeing blockchain. We're seeing that with smart contracts with real estate. Yes. Um, we're seeing it with smart contracts with bullion. So we're seeing we're seeing it come in real case use, which is what why I'm so excited about it, because we're just at the start of that. We're just at the very start of it. And that's why small, or not small businesses, businesses in general shouldn't be ignoring it because it's it's on its way, guys.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and that's sort of why um I've been keen to, you know, and I've done your course, and it's amazing to get yourself set up in the crypto world and understand how it works and uh highly recommend to anyone if you want to dip your toes in the water, do D's foundational course because it just gives you all the basics and helps you get set up to operate safely, and then you can start experimenting and absolutely, yeah. Yeah, and um yeah, so it's it's it's coming. And I think that's what made me uh start educating myself on it. I could sort of hear from conversations around me for about, you know, for 10 years I heard people talking about crypto, and for me it was in the too hard basket and don't have time to look into that, and it seems too risky anyway. But then the conversation started shifting, then you start hearing people actually making really decent money off crypto and um funding their lifestyle through cryptocurrency and buying houses, and you're thinking, oh, okay, am I missing something? And then the conversations shifted more to, you know, you hear on the news. And if you follow any sort of cryptocurrency podcast, you start hearing how big financial institutions are putting in the infrastructure to be able to deal with blockchain. And you hear about um European countries, international uh around the globe countries are preparing for blockchain technology, right?
SPEAKER_01Well, they are, they're not only just preparing blockchain technology, they're actually putting BTC or Bitcoin reserves in place. Right. Now, this is in sometimes in quite small countries, guys. This is not just um America. There's countries around now that have been doing BTC reserves for up to five years. I think Bhutan, Jeremy mentioned. Yeah, Bhutan, like I don't even know where Bhutan is. To be fair, I haven't got clue. And they've got Bitcoin reserves for years. So this is just and this is what we're starting to see now, along with that they've got reserves of bullion and lots of other assets. Bitcoin has now become part of that asset class. So we've got to realize that it's not only coming, it's actually here. Yes. Um, and everyday people, even though they don't realize it, may be touched by it anyway. And the other thing is that we're seeing, um particularly in Australia, we're seeing a lot of regular regulatory compliance happening. Yes. And this is going on between ASICs and ATO and the government bodies and all of the respective um people that are that are involved in that. And we're seeing that now. So we we know of a digital coin, an Australian digital coin, that has actually now um got licensing through ASIC. So it's become and it's got a license from ASIC saying it's okay to start transacting in this.
SPEAKER_00Wow. So it's yeah, um, they wouldn't be allocating all this time, money, and resources to doing that if they didn't think it was going to be the new way, right?
SPEAKER_01Two two things involve that, yes, with regards to the new way, and two, they're a little bit scared. So there's a combination in that, um, because there's a lot of money that passes hands, it bypasses the system now.
SPEAKER_00Correct, right.
SPEAKER_01And so what happens, we've got two two trajectories here. We've got what cryptocurrency was designed for was to be peer-to-peer, B2B, without the third parties, without the financial institutions as a transactional thing globally, no borders, that type of thing. We've got that trajectory. We've got secondary trajectory, which is our government bodies around or financial bodies, or anybody around the world, that want to get involved, control that, because they're missing out on that. Correct, yeah. So there's two lines of thought. Now we've got traditional uh investors and people in it that that definitely need regulations, and then you've got, I would call the pioneers or crypto natives that are quite happy without the regulation. I'll bet, yeah. So we've got we've got these two camps um that they're not fighting each other, they're just sort of trying to work out what's happening in the middle. And so that part's still unknown, how that's going to be. It's very much so. But in Australia, we had some bills passed in November of last year. We've now got regulation where a lot of the brokers and exchanges have to have an AFSL underneath the Australian Financial Services licensing. Um there's A lot of regulations on what they can and they can't do. They can't take external people from Australia. They can only deal with the Australian market. So there's a and a lot of even the big um exchanges. This is a really good example. QCoin. It's an international exchange. It's not based in Australia. We're just about anyone that has an account with Qcoin is going to be migrated to their separate one, which is Qcoin Australia. So what's happening? And Binance has done the same. Binance has shifted away and has made a Binance Australia because it actually cannot operate in this country without regulation.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01That they've had to uh create arms, if you want to call it.
SPEAKER_00So eventually we might have lots of arms if all countries step in to regulate. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So this is where it's going to become a very interesting body. But a lot of it, um, a lot of it will be will be ironed out over the next four or five years.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, fascinating. I mean, it's so interesting. Um, and I think what I love about cryptocurrency is the liquidity of it as well. I mean, uh I've just been dabbling for a few years, but I managed to cash out some money recently. And it's like, oh my gosh, it works, you know. And um, when you first get that taste of um, this is actually something that can supplement my lifestyle. And, you know, um, it's yeah. So let's get started on how you can actually venture into the world of crypto. And obviously, your business, as we mentioned, is um very focused on helping people be secure in the crypto space.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So the biggest thing I think is this gambling element that you mentioned before, Kate. Um, if and we've seen it all, we hear the scams, we hear the the phishing and the malware and God knows what other words they use, but there's a lot it's huge. It's huge. And it's now on steroids with AI, bless. So we've got everything that's going quicker and quicker and faster and faster. Now, can I add, all these scams and things are were still in the feed industry or normal money. They're just they've just become slightly more advanced in the crypto world.
SPEAKER_00What's the reason for that, do you think?
SPEAKER_01Oh, look, I think I think the scammers saw it as an easy opportunity. And no offense, humans are fools. Yeah. Don't be anyone be offended by that. If you, you know, people are attracted to cryptocurrency from a greed perspective. So they hop into crypto and they think if I buy a thousand dollars worth of this, it'll 10x or it'll a hundred X or it'll do this, it'll do that, and then they put it on an open network, and then they tell everybody on their Facebook um friends that they've done it. So they become they put a target on the back almost immediately. And these scammers come along, and no offense, they are pretty smart people. It's a shame a lot of them are on the wrong side of the fence because they're really smart people. Yeah. So we see all this happening, and generally, when I first started my business or our business, um we saw a lot of people coming to us that had already been scammed. Now, the other thing is a lot of people don't know where to go and talk to and who to trust about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And also they're embarrassed. They don't want to tell anybody that they've been scammed because they they look they look and feel like or they feel like a fool. And we don't want to make them clear like that. What we want to do is if you want to be in this space, stay safe. Like if you want to stay in cryptocurrency, get your foundational levels right, and then we'll set you free and off you go. We're not we're not asking you to hug us for the rest of your life or anything like that, but we get you all set up, boot you out of the nest, and give you the strategies that you need to do to move forward in the in the industry. Now, the other thing we are seeing within Australia is a large amount of self-managed super funds are going into they're they're taking their funds out of industry funds and they're putting them into forms of crypto.
SPEAKER_00Now I've just done that recently, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. But I can tell you now, set it up safely and correctly because you will be audited and the ATO will be watching you and you'll have a target on your back if you screw it up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So what we want to do is make sure that this industry gets as clean as possible and that we can give the security to do that. So through the self-managed super funds, there's no breaking of the rules, guys. This is how you've got to do it. We show you the processes, we show you how to get the information for your auditor and all of the things that need to be done. And the other thing I'm seeing is an education gap between existing accountants, solicitors, and financial planners, because they can't do it. Like financial planners cannot even whisper about it. But they're bound by duty of care to the regulators, not to you guys. They're bound by regulators, not you. So they can't even smell it, look at it, say it, talk about it. They just pretend it doesn't exist. So what we're looking at now is a large transition of funds into the industry through self-managed super funds. And I'm telling you now, get the right expert to do that with you. Don't don't pick an off-the-shelf job on the internet to set up your self-managed super fund to do it properly. Otherwise, this would be a good idea.
SPEAKER_00We interviewed, sorry, it'll turn pear shape. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we interviewed Natalia Clark um um earlier in the series, and she's one of those experts that you hold close to you to help your clients, right?
SPEAKER_01Oh, absolutely. And look, in our instance, we we don't give professional advice, we don't give all those things. What I do have around me is I have a resource center of people that are qualified to help out our clients.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And we are very happy to pass them over to the right people because there's even little things like how the hell do you even write your crypto into your will? And most people don't think about that because they're certainly not thinking of turning their toes up, are they? No, definitely not. Never know. But you never know, exactly. So no, look, that's that's the reason that we try and make sure that you're set up on all the safe things that need to be done.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so um Susan talk us through some of the things you help clients get set up with to set up that foundational security.
SPEAKER_01Um so normally they'll come to me um and we do a 30-minute analysis, review, safety audit. I don't know, I don't know, whatever fancy word you want to do it, but it's a series of questions where I actually see what you've got already. And there might be things like where you're holding your existing crypto if you have any. Yep. It might be things like are you using an encrypted browser? Are you using encrypted email? Do you know um, even if you're on a Mac, are you using a VPN? Are you using antivirus? Do you know what any of these things mean? Do you know what a hot wallet is? Do you know what a cold wallet is? Do you know how to store your money safely for your self-managed super fund so no other little varmint can get hold of it on your laptop? Um, so there's a whole array of things that we walk through with people and we help them set them up. Like, where do you put your seed phrase? Do you know what a seed phrase is? Yeah. Um so we try and dumb it down and keep it really simple in the early stages. And then as they slowly progress with me, we get them more advanced in that and we start to get them into different levels of crypto. But the foundations are imperative. Um, even my experienced crypto users, I can absolutely tell you now that they have they have done work with me to just make sure that everything's at top end.
SPEAKER_00Plug up the gaps.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's happens. And this is what's happened last year with um AI. We've just had everything increased on steroids, so we've had to add some extra layers for security as well.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And the other thing is, is if it's done properly, this isn't gambling. It's common sense.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I know when I um I've now got my crypto folder here, which is all the things that I worked through with you. It's got all my seed phrases, all my, you know, all the things that um you need to stay to set up and stay safe online. And it it does it does feel like a lot in the beginning until you um, you know, get used to the terminology, understand how it works, why why you need that and this and this and this. And it's been a process, but um at the end of it, you come out feeling prepared and safe to have a play now, you know, where yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um and that's the idea is we want you to have a plan. Like don't just go in there balls and all. You want to have an actual plan on where you're gonna go with this. And what is the outcome? Are you wanting to hold it and have it for your retirement? Are you wanting to have it as an income-producing activity to top up your lifestyle? Is it a part-time income? So we need to determine what it is that you want out of crypto. Um, and it's the same thing when we go through the the risk analysis for you and we go through that step by step. We look at those. Now, I've had clients that have come to me and they say, Look, I said, What do you want out of your port cup? I want it to 100x. I said, Well, I'm definitely not the right person because you ain't gonna get that out of that portfolio. Right, yeah, yeah. Because someone has to give them a reality check. Yeah, that this is you're not doing that. If you want to do that, that is an out and out gamble. Right? There's no other way to describe it. It's a gamble. Yeah, that's not what we want you to be doing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So there's a lot there in what you just said. There's a couple of things. Um, firstly, around this, um, well, I'd love you to just give a quick explanation of hot and cold wallet for those that are listening in. What is that? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Hot wallet is connected to the internet, cold wallet is offline. Right. It's not connected. They are very simple.
SPEAKER_00Yep. So you've got the ledgers which are offline.
SPEAKER_01Yep, that's a cold storage um device. There's lots of very good quality ledger, I'm sorry, uh, cold storage devices out there. When we do the work with you, we will select one that works for your tech skills and for the amount that you're holding and what it is that you want to do with it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So whether it's a holding account, we would always separate your cold storages from your everyday individual versus your self-managed super fund so that you can have your reporting completely away from your individuals and you don't mix the two. So there it's a difference between a hot and cold wallet. One's connected to the internet, one isn't. There it is.
SPEAKER_00And people put it onto a cold wallet so that it's not connected to the internet, so that it's not open to hacking. Is that right?
SPEAKER_01It it actually, yeah, it reduces so quit much the um the ability for people to get to your funds. And the other thing is it does put you into the category of self-custodian. And that means that you are sovereign, you hold the funds yourself. Now, I uh a disclaimer on that is that not everybody should be self-custodian for various reasons. So when we go through that, we will give um some ideas to them as to whether we think that they're the right that's the right fit for them or whether they should really be staying in a centralized position and protecting it a different way.
SPEAKER_00And then, as we learned, there's people like Jeremy Britton who can now offer a portfolio management service for the crypto.
SPEAKER_01I know, well, that's a crypto fund manager. Now there's only about four of those in the world. Well, he's his is the oldest, and he's he also 2016. I can speak speak about this because I do know the subject quite well. Yeah. Um, and he has a crypto fund manager for the basics. So when I say that, if you are a super busy entrepreneur, CEO, you don't have time, you've got a self-managed super fund, you want exposure to the crypto market, but you don't want to take responsibility for yourself or use the crypto fund manager as a very healthy vehicle to do that. It's quite simple to be involved and it's managed for you. No different to a hedge fund, a traditional hedge fund or an index fund is another really good example. But this is one design for it. And the other thing that they've created, which I found quite good, is they've made some faith-based based funds. Yes, I saw that. Yeah, which is really, really different. And it's been a big mission for Jeremy to set those up. So they're faith-based.
SPEAKER_00Amazing.
SPEAKER_01Um, so yeah, very different way of looking at crypto now to what it used to be.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because he has a PhD in religions, religious. Oh no, he's got he's a doctor, right? Yeah, combined religion with finance, but you know.
SPEAKER_01So he's a real he's a religious. I just I just look at it and I'm I'm looking, well, I just don't get it. But anyway, hey ho.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, for those of you that missed that episode, we did um interview he and um um about his company Boston Trading Co. in um episode five. So yeah, go check it out if you missed it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely take a look at it because he's a quirky character. Um he has he's a very intelligent man and he has a great knowledge of the crypto industry. And him and I have had heated debates over the years. We've still managed to remain friends, but we've had long conversations on the twos and pros of crypto over the years. Fascinating. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. And then you mentioned that you know a client will come to you with a portfolio and they'll say, I want 100x, and you'll look at that portfolio and go, no chance. Um, and I presume when you say that you're you're talking about the fact that some the coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, they are now what we call stable. So they're not in that volatile phase anymore where they can um deliver those big returns that the the pioneers sometimes um were lucky to um be part of, right? So is that what you mean? When you've got a portfolio, you've got some coins that are more stable and the returns aren't going to be as drastic, but they're reliable. And then you've got the newer, more volatile coins that are going through that initial phase.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. And look, I've seen, and and as I said, this isn't financial advice because that's not what we actually do. But we would look at a portfolio and you can tell pretty quickly if you know how to look at a project, whether that coin is going to last or not.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Um, and that's one of the things that we do educate people on when they get to the more advanced courses. We actually show them how to analyze a project and how to analyse a coin. And they can go and do their own research because that's what what they do. I'm not going to do it. Because even with my experience, it takes me two to three solid hours to research a project for a coin to go through things like uh big words like tokenomics, which just means is it going to work? Like what's you know, what's the layout? Um, so you go through all of these layers, you check out things like who owns the coin, what's their background, like you go through a whole series of checklists that we do, and we then give that to the client and they can go away and sort their own portfolio out.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And they can do that. So we will give them the skill set and they can quick quite quickly go through and have a portfolio. And they might have 20 coins in there, and 18 of them are useless. Right. When they go and do their analysis. So we we train them to go back and look at their portfolio and sort it out themselves.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Okay. And you mentioned that 90% of all coins, was it 90? Or are you? Oh, easily. Yeah. And how many coins are there out there at the moment?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'd have to look on coin market cap, it's probably 30,000.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, 30,000.
SPEAKER_01So 30,000? Like some ludicrous amount of coins. I haven't looked for ages, um, because I just look at them and go, oh my lord, I can't keep up with all of that. And you can't. Yeah. And that's why um we've we've only specialized in one area of crypto, which is safety and security, because the the scope is so broad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. And these are just these are projects or um entrepreneurs or um finance people or people with an idea that have gone in and say, hey, let's create a coin and let's use it to, you know, as a uh value, um what do you call it, a um a tool, a vehicle for a value exchange, but whether or not it actually gets up and has traction is a whole other thing.
SPEAKER_01We I I did a I'll give you a good example of a project. We looked at a project last week. I was asked to beta test it. Um so I went in and I beta tested it. And pretty much it was a a data center for a lot of resources collaborated in one place. So it'd been done by the a fairly, you know, fairly prominent development, not prominent, but a development team that that were okay. Okay. And I was asked to take a look at it. So then I went back to their BDM and and she said to me, you know, what do you think of this particular project? I said, okay, what's the outcome? Oh, well, you know, people can go in and do this. I said, so what's your tier structure? What's your membership base? If I join this program, what is it that I'm going to get that I can't find out there now with my knowledge? And it was looking at it and I said, So, okay, what's the business plan? What's your ROI? What is um, you know, what is your expectations, what are your projections? Do you have a roadmap? Now in crypto, they're not just call them roadmaps, it's another word for business plan.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Business plan, roadmap, light paper, white paper, they're just fancy words for a business plan guy or a business.
SPEAKER_00They're all entrepreneurial ventures, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and look, when we broke this site down and had a look at even their website, it was useless. And she said, What do you what do you think I should do? I said, Leave the project, get another one, because this ain't going nowhere, real quick. And I said, Oh, we're going to develop a token. I said, Who's going to buy it for what purpose? Yeah. So it didn't have a utility. And that's what is one of the key factors of what problem does it solve?
SPEAKER_00So can you walk us through a little bit? You mentioned XRP and Ripple. That solves the problem of rapid exchange between highways, is that right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and rapid exchanges between banking facilities because they use blockchain technology, yes.
SPEAKER_00Okay. But and XRP is the only uh one that can can work with banking facilities, is that right?
SPEAKER_01Not now, no, that's not the case. There's several others as well, chomping at their heels.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah. But XRP was the first to get into.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's probably one of the ones that are best known and most accepted. Yeah. Um, you know, they've they've got they've got skin in the game and they've been around for a long time. But there is other payment rails and other payment systems and things that are out there that are definitely nipping at their heels because everything is moving at such speed.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So that's one um example of a use case, I think you called it, that um as a utility. What are some other what's Ethereum, for example?
SPEAKER_01I've So again, that's another blockchain. Um, and what happens? I know I'm gonna try and keep this really simple so as not to confuse the audience at all, because there's probably some experienced crypto users in here and they'll just be laughing at me, going, ah, but I'm just saying it is what they call a layer one. So a developer or a project can come to Ethereum and they can build another project on there and they can use Ethereum, which is the token to go on the highway to make it all work. They can actually use it. Ethereum became a really la big, massive layer one, right? Massive.
SPEAKER_00And then underneath that layer one on top of the base um blockchain.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so they they became a layer one and they became it's Bitcoin underneath, excuse me. No, Bitcoin's in a different realm. It's not it's not a layer one. Bitcoin is a whole different animal by itself, right? Completely, nothing can be built on it, nothing, it's not like that. It has other big things like cardinals and all sorts of things involved in Bitcoin that'll blow your little mind. Yeah, but just allocate Bitcoin by itself as a special needs customer, okay, and then the others are your general public.
SPEAKER_00That's fascinating. Bitcoin is a special needs, but highly valuable, and it's great, right?
SPEAKER_01I love it, I love Bitcoin. Um, but also really respect and enjoy XRP for its purpose. So you've got to have this, like I said, I I'm not either way, I'm not a Bitcoin maxi and I'm not an XRP army. Um so you Ethereum has become a main layer for lots of other things to be built on. And now what they call is EVM, which is Ethereum, like it's it becomes Ethereum compatible. So MetaMask, which is a hot wallet, very common wallet. It was built and designed to support the Ethereum network as wealth as a uh point of exchange or pass-through, whatever you want, a hot wallet. It was designed exactly for that. You can't actually deliver Bitcoin to the MetaMask wallet because it's not compatible.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01They can't talk to each other.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Bitcoin is on something called a native SegWit.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01And Ethereum is not that way designed. So it's it's like the silver. So it's silver.
SPEAKER_00So gold and Bitcoin is gold and Ethereum is the silver. Because a lot of platforms were like the beginner platform that I first dipped my toe into the water with Bitcoin was bamboo.
SPEAKER_01You know, I've talked to Yeah, so Bamboo is a is a really good Australian product, actually from a company in WA, and they created an app. Yeah. And what they do is they help very easily help people enter into the crypto market by just rounding up their dollars. Yeah. So this is kind of like you go out, you tap your card, you tap, you know, your visa card, it's connected to bamboo, it rolls the cents and dollars up, like it rolls it up, and then what it does is it will it will invest it in Bitcoin or Ethereum or whatever ones that you choose. So it's a really it's a great little app for people to play with, and it's great for teaching teenagers and um, you know, adults, young adults and things like anyone that wants to do it. It's a great little app. I love bamboo.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and they only offer Bitcoin, Ethereum, silver or gold, which is interesting.
SPEAKER_01They only have the quality product. So this is my point. You can stay safe, still do it, yeah, um, and stay safe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I'd highly recommend that as a as a as like where um, you know, the baby trainer wheels.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. It's a it is a great way to enter it without very minimal risk and very minimal capital outlay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and just to get a little bit of confidence that, oh, I mean, I did cash in some, uh I did take profit from bamboo at one point. And and it's really exciting. It's oh my gosh, this is, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's it and it's it is a fun way to be exposed to it and stay safe at the same time. So no, I'm I'm all for the little app bamboo. I like it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And obviously what you do is support. People to um to be out there in the big wide world with all the um coins available with a strategic plan, build a portfolio and get clear on what they want to do with this money, how they want to use it. Because like you said, you live off you use crypto for living expenses, right? You can pay your petrol. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_01So it's well, remember when we got together, we paid for that bottle of wine and I paid with it with crypto. Amazing.
SPEAKER_00And it was a nice bottle too, I might add. It was lovely. Thank you. Thank you, crypto. Thank you, D. And um, and so how did you pay for that? That was just done through a Visa card. Um which currency is linked to that? Crypto.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So what happens? So just so you understand, there's lots and lots of crypto visa cards out there. Some of them are really good, some of them are absolute crap. Right. So pretty much what happens is once it's set up properly and we show you the right systems, you put the funds, the crypto funds, onto the card. I'll take, I go out to um what we use, coffee club. Let's just use that as now. We go to coffee club and we order lunch. I pay for it with this particular visa visa card. The software in the background changes it back to AUD and the shop owner receives AUD.
SPEAKER_00But on that in the background, you've got multiple cryptocurrencies feeding.
SPEAKER_01Correct. So you can have Bitcoin, Ethereum, like there's multiples, and they also will come in on different blockchains. So they might come in on the Ethereum blockchain, they might come in on the B, which is the Binance blockchain, it might come in on Tron, which is another blockchain, or AVAX, which is Avalanche one, Lana. Yes. So you can bring crypto in and it sits on this card and you can go out and purchase normal everyday things.
SPEAKER_00There's quite a lot of smarts that go into developing a Visa card.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the technology in this stuff now is quite phenomenal. So the days of having crypto and pretending it doesn't exist are long gone. Um, it was kind of crypto was put into the same category as religion and politics. You don't discuss it at the dinner, you know, or the barbecue. Whereas now I'm finding more and more people uh open to that discussion. They don't feel like they're isolated with their thoughts on crypto.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and there's a bit of FOMO happening, I've noticed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, yeah, exactly. There's always a bit of FOMO when things are good, and then there's the fear factor comes in as soon as it's not so good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And because the market's sort of at a low point at the moment, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01And um Yeah, look, it is, but we we're heading into a bear market. Now, there's lots out there that'll probably disagree with me. Um, I'm I'm leaning towards more of a bear market at this point in time.
SPEAKER_00We had the bull run, it wasn't as for those listening who might not know, bear is where you go into a cold winter.
SPEAKER_01So bear is when we go down the hole and the hole's not so good. Bull is where we come out of the hole and we're charging towards the the goal. You know, we're gonna go towards that red flag. So it's no different in any other market. We have bears and bulls in the stocks and commodities market, we have bears and bulls in the bullion market, we even see it in the property market. So the cycles haven't changed. Yeah. They're just they're just it's just in a different vehicle. It's in crypto this time. That's all.
SPEAKER_00And the key is knowing um how to see the signs, what the signals, and and I know you help um your clients figure out, you know, what are the signals for a time, a good time to buy, a good time to sell, um, you know, so that you you're armed with that knowledge, and then also knowing how to regulate your emotions when it does go through a dip.
SPEAKER_01That's the biggest thing is emotional, is is the emotional side of it, Kate. And you hit something, a very good subject on that. People's emotion get in the way of common sense, and greed gets in the way of common sense. So what we try and do is moderate that. Now, look, I'm one of the most unemotional females on two licks when it comes to this stuff. I look at a chart and I go, that's no. That's a yes, that's no. There's no, there's it's black and white, it's on a chart.
SPEAKER_00But that's because you know what to look for, right?
SPEAKER_01And look, absolutely, but also I think you've got to have the right personality type to be in this industry, and it is not designed for all of us. It's the same as it sometimes it's not right for people to own their own homes because they can't handle the debt level. It might not be right for people to have self-custody of their money because they're either tech challenged or whatever the case maybe.
SPEAKER_00They're not disciplined enough or not disciplined enough.
SPEAKER_01Um, you know, they're a bit airy-fairy with their with their funds, they live from paycheck to paycheck. So we we we want to make sure that we have people within the industry that have the strength that can handle this. And so my role is not just about teaching and educating you, is to keep you emotionally stabilized through all this.
SPEAKER_00Yes, which is very necessary when you see the line going down, down, down. Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, what I want to teach you is that's the most exciting time ever because if you're set up correctly, you should have funds available to you to be able to purchase at those times.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I just did a little purchase the other day. I'm thinking, okay, well, this is the lowest I've ever brought at um bought. Yeah, and that's a strategy.
SPEAKER_01So it's about finding a strategy that works for you guys. We just simply give you the tools to go off and do that yourself.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And it all just comes down to um confidence, which is knowledge and education on the topic, isn't it? And and um yeah, knowing how to write out uh And anyone can do this.
SPEAKER_01Like you could do all of the things that I teach quite comfortably on your own. All I do is make sure it's on steroids and happens in a very short space of time. Woo-hoo, there we go.
SPEAKER_00That's a good thing. That's a different if I ever heard one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's the only thing is I make it go faster. You can still learn and do these things the way I did. It just took me bloody years to get there. And I was a bit slow on the uptake because I didn't really know what I was doing.
SPEAKER_00Well, I feel like I'm way behind the eight ball, but there are people that haven't started the journey yet.
SPEAKER_01So I know, and I and I encourage anybody to just observe and take a look at this and and step in with care and caution. Um, but you know what? It's it's a really sexy place to be. It's fun, yeah. Yeah, it's it's a good place to be if you know how to stay safe.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yeah. Yeah, and once you take that first um profit and and translate it into fiat money in your bank account, which um I know you don't have to do that. You're operating in the world of cryptocurrency where it doesn't even have to be transferred to fiat, right? It to land in your bank account in order for you to use it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, it depends on which way your strategy is, because if it's in there, let's say for example, we're doing these podcasts on businesses, um, we would make sure that that money was part of their cash flow and things like that because it has to be taxed and it has to have certain things done to it. So that's what we need to make sure that when a business is starting to take crypto as a form of payment, they know how to handle it within their bookkeeping system as well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So this is where you've got to look at, well, okay, are we looking at a self-managed super fund that is just so strict and you just don't break the rules to a business that we can actually flex a little bit and what do we do to make that business, you know, um a crypto as part of that business to an individual who might want a completely different program altogether. So it just depends on people's situation, what we want to do, what they want to do.
SPEAKER_00But I definitely know that first time I transferred a few thousand dollars into my bank account and it and saw it there in my online banking system. It's like, oh my gosh, it's real, it works.
SPEAKER_01Like this is it. This is the thing that even my husband said, he said it's not real. And I said, So when is money ever real? Yeah. Like every time we travel overseas, we don't take much cash with us anymore. We always do everything digitally. Wow. Um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So what's the difference? And he's and I think for me, that difference, it became clear that I can use this in my life. Like this is correct. And that's the point where it became real for me.
SPEAKER_01It was like it is, and it's a use, it can now be used in everyday living. And I'd like to think that that's the camp that we've gone to is that we're delivering it from this weird world of crypto that's gamble and it's weird and unusual and strange words and you know, things you don't understand to the things we do understand. And what DigiSecure do is we bridge that gap and the communication gap between these two things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And simplify.
SPEAKER_00And that's really motivating because once, you know, when I got that few thousand dollars in my account, I thought, well, that took me a whole lot less time to generate than the whole week that I've just spent working here in my business. Um, when you start realizing the effort to return um can be quite like really appealing, and it's motivating to get in and understand and learn more. Um think, wow, if I can have this as a supplementary stream that's just making my life easier and helping my helping me build my wealth goals, then it's a good thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and as part of an asset portfolio, yeah, it's it's it's a smart move now. It's now classified as an asset class on its own. Um, and it's up to you.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01And it's up to you whether you want to position yourself to be part of that fifth asset. You may not, and that's also okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the fact that they're calling it the fifth asset class internationally means it is now accepted as an asset, a legitimate asset class. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And we don't, we genuinely don't talk about it as much in Australia as it is in outside countries. Like I travel quite regularly to Dubai for business. And cryptocurrency is every second word that comes out. You know, whereas in Australia we we tend to stay a little bit underground with that. And what we're trying to do is bring it to the surface and say, okay, this is just a subject that we can talk about. Let's do it the right way.
SPEAKER_00We're quite conservative, risk-averse, or as a goal.
SPEAKER_01Look, there's a lot of things we we could say we're good at Australians, but communication, I'm not gonna say that's the case.
SPEAKER_00Adopting new technologies, maybe, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And yet we've got some amazing um developers and things that have come out and amazing crypto ideas that have or of blockchain um projects that have come out of Australia.
SPEAKER_00Well the Daxi coin is Australian, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, but that's actually done by one exchange.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The Daxy Coin. So that's about crowdfunding and so isn't there's a whole oh that's a whole other subject on its own. And I mean, you could go on about this all the time, and that's kind of why we only specialized in one small area. Um, because I simply just my my bandwidth couldn't go for all the other things, you know. Am I an expert on staking? No, I'm not. Am I an expert in um ICOs, which are initial coin offerings? No, I'm not.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But what we do have is the contacts that if that interests you, we'll send you to them because I'm not that person. We don't have that skill set. We have no bloody interest.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we'll send them to you safely set up with the right systems in place.
SPEAKER_01I set you up, send you off on your own. You can make the decisions on what you where you go with your crypto journey.
SPEAKER_00Well, I think you've positioned yourself well because you are the gateway to the world of crypto and you cannot pass through to the other side unless you've got everything in place.
SPEAKER_01And you don't come through it until you're safe, guys. Right, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, thank you so much, Dee. Um, we could talk for hours on this topic, and there's just so much to to absorb from your expertise. But um, I've hopefully this has been a good uh, you know, introduction to those that are curious and want to take the plunge and you know, start um, because apparently you cannot afford to ignore digital assets as a business owner anymore.
