We pray through the third week of Lent and reflect on the intercessions at Mass as a real exercise of our baptismal priesthood. We challenge ourselves to pray with bold trust, asking God for everything from small graces to the salvation of the whole world.
• offering our day to Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary
• why the universal prayer follows the Word of God
• what the prayer of the faithful is meant to include
• how simple, sober petitions can carry the needs of the world
• baptismal priesthood united with the ministerial priesthood in prayer
• examining whether our prayer shrinks back from “bothering” God
• choosing bold intercession for the Church, leaders, the suffering and all humanity
If you found this time of prayer and reflection fruitful and would like more opportunities to grow in your faith this Lent, consider joining the Cristeros and purchasing our Lenten Reflection booklet, now available on Amazon.com. Friday, in the third week of Lent. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day, in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the remission of my sins, for the intentions of my family and friends, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father. Amen. Intercessions. In the universal prayer, or prayer of the faithful, the people respond in some sense to the word of God, which they have received in faith, and, exercising the office of their baptismal priesthood, offer prayers to God for the salvation of all. It is desirable that there usually be such a form of prayer in masses celebrated with the people, so that petitions may be offered for the Holy Church, for those who govern with authority over us, for those weighed down by various needs, for all humanity, and for the salvation of the whole world. Having been strengthened by the Word of God and the public profession, we make bold to pray to God for our needs. While these are meant to be simple and sober prayers, they can express much, even as prayers for the whole world. This is another occasion in the Mass when the baptismal priesthood unites to the ministerial priesthood in petitioning God for the good things we need. The ultimate end of these prayers is seen in the last line of the rubric above, the salvation of the whole world. While a common and passing phrase, these few words urge us even further in our prayer. They tell us we should be asking for all things from God, from the smallest grace to the salvation of the world. Be bold in your prayer. Does your prayer have a bold quality to it, or is it subdued, not wanting to bother God? All that I have and all that I am I give to your hands, Jesus, through the heart of Mary, your blessed mother. Amen. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
