Episode 002: Who Leads Without A Captain: Building A Mets Identity Around Depth And Defense
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What changes when your middle infield becomes a fortress and your center fielder can change a game with one swing and one route? We dive into a pivotal spring where the Mets lean into defense, depth, and a few gutsy bets that could redefine the season’s ceiling. Marcus Semien’s arrival locks down second and pairs with Francisco Lindor to create one of the league’s most reliable up‑the‑middle tandems, while Luis Robert Jr. brings All‑Star upside to center with the caveat of availability. We unpack how that combination impacts lineup protection for Juan Soto and opens doors for emerging names like Carson Benge.
From there, we zoom out to the puzzle pieces that win in August: a catcher surplus that doubles as trade ammo, and a bullpen that still needs a left‑handed power arm. We spotlight spring battles for Brian Hudson and Brandon Waddell, and make the case for targeting Tampa Bay’s Garrett Cleavinger to inject velocity and swing‑and‑miss from the left side. If the rotation does run six deep, every bullpen seat matters—so we sketch realistic paths for who sticks, who shuttles, and who could be moved.
We also share our Opening Day lineup prediction, talk clubhouse culture without a formal captain, and celebrate Port St. Lucie’s facility upgrades that actually help players stay healthy and sharp. Beyond Queens, we size up the World Baseball Classic, where the Dominican Republic looks loaded enough to push the USA and Japan, and we invite you to jump into a listener fantasy league to put all this roster chatter to work. It’s a fast, nerdy, and heartfelt tour through what’s new, what’s fragile, and what could be special about this Mets team.

Welcome And Housekeeping
SPEAKER_00Welcome everyone. This is Sad Boys Met Club. This is our second episode. I'm Giovanni Blanco.
SPEAKER_02And I'm Franklin Blanco.
SPEAKER_00Before we begin, please do all the things that you need to do to keep this thing going.
SPEAKER_02Remember to hit that bell, smash that subscribe button, and don't forget to like.
SPEAKER_00Like, like, like, and share. Share,
Semien Trade And McNeil Goodbye
SPEAKER_00please. Um, we're gonna just jump right in and talk about a lot of things because uh we're this is kind of almost an education for me because I'm a huge Mets fan. Uh I'm just not uh a huge numbers fan. I don't I don't keep track of all the people coming and going necessarily. I'm I'm more about the games, but uh but Frankie, Franklin, is definitely on top of it, and uh we're gonna discuss um we're gonna start off with something. What do you think? What do you think we should?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I think we should start off with uh some of the big guys we got that we haven't talked about yet, because last episode we talked about Freddie Peralta and Bob Bachet, because those were the big guys, but today I just found out that you didn't know about Luis Rober Jr. No or Marcus Semyon, who were two pretty big gets this offseason. Um and honestly, I think we should start with Marcus Semyon because he's kind of uh he was the first thing we did the offseason because he is who we traded to the Rangers uh Nimmo, right? Yeah, for Nemo. So I Nimmo And I've recently realized Carson Benge is kind of just like a new Nimmo. Like he's very much, he's very Nimmo. Um a baby Nimmo. Exactly, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Ah, that's a new nickname, baby Nimmo.
SPEAKER_02Um, but Marcus Semyon also, in a way, was us saying goodbye to Jeff McNeil as well because he was our second baseman and we kind of knew we were getting rid of him, but that was the final bolt in the coffin. He uh Marcus Semyon plays second base, used to be really an elite batter. Like he he had one season with the Blue Jays where he hit like 40 home runs. Yeah, dude. And he got a massive contract with the Rangers. Um and he was their captain for the longest time, including when they won the World Series. And he's also known as like a good clubhouse present presence, and he's probably he's one of the best defensive second basemen.
SPEAKER_00So that's kind of that was what's uh what's uh what's his status in the last few years though?
SPEAKER_02He's not that great batting. But when you look at it and you compare it to McNeil, he was like he was a little bit off because of like injuries and that kind of thing this year. He's gonna be a better player overall because that was another thing is we wanted to focus on the defense, and he is about as good as you can get. Like, we have one of the most solid right up the middle pairs you could get with Lindor and Semyon.
SPEAKER_00Semian.
SPEAKER_02And at spring training, they're already they're already talking, they're already vibing because Lindor's done his surgery, so they're they're already getting along. Um yeah, that's that's a quick one. That's awesome.
Luis Robert Jr. Role In Center
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. I want to move on to Lewis Roper because that's like Yes. You said to me that we just got this new guy.
SPEAKER_00I just I just saw him because he just did a press conference yesterday.
SPEAKER_02Yes, he just did his press conference.
SPEAKER_00So it was just one of those things I was just like, who's this guy? I mean, it's like it feels like we're kind of overloaded, but I know that that's the case always in spring training, that you're always kind of like, Yes. You know, it's a 50-man team or something like that.
SPEAKER_02We have a lot of guys in our spring training. But uh Luis Rober was who we got for uh Acunia. Okay. So when we did that trade, we kind of we needed somebody in the outfield, and that was like a long talked-about thing. I wasn't the biggest fan of it, but I'm kinda getting more on board now because I think he has like he has high upside. He's played great before, and he can play great, we've seen. Um, I'm really excited. I think we needed a good like center fielder.
SPEAKER_00Is he is he gonna be the center fielder?
SPEAKER_02Right now he is our center fielder because if somebody's playing somewhere else, it's gonna be Carson Benge is playing right field. Right, yeah, so doesn't left. Because other move. So it's he should be our center fielder, but he normally he's not big on playing a full season. Like normally things happen. So we do have a lot of insurance in guys in the outfield. Like we have we have, I mean, even Beatty. I bet Beatty could play like center. I have faith. I think Beatty could pitch if he wanted to. Um I'm I'm high on Beatty. But uh Rob Robert, speaking of Rober, funny thing, I might add, the White Sox general manager was so high on Acunya, like he was he thought so highly of him, he was like, he's the most versatile player ever. He's a switch hitter. And he mentioned that he was a switch hitter, like, in five different press conferences, and he's not. He just like I think he's just like a he's one of the normal ones. Um so he did make a bit of a fool of himself, even though it's a good he's a good player to have. It was just really funny to see.
Outfield Insurance: Tauchman And Bench Depth
SPEAKER_02Um but I want to quickly transition into another guy that we got, which is uh Mike Talkman. Because he's another guy who doesn't who isn't gonna play the full season, but he's very solid when he does, and he's gonna be he's just gonna be great to have his outfield insurance. Like he's gonna be on our roster, I think.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean you already told me that Robert is not gonna be playing all season.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. It's just good to have another guy in the outfield and their teammates.
SPEAKER_00Revenge gets canceled.
SPEAKER_02Says something a little too country.
SPEAKER_00I love that, I love that. Let him be honest, let him be clean, let him be, let him be himself.
SPEAKER_02No, he's he's great. I mean, he loves Judo. He was like, he was in awe uh in spring training. There's some clips, he's like, oh my god, this is crazy that I'm playing with Jansoto. Um yeah, it's I'm excited. I think Mike Tocman was a good get because I think we signed him on a minor league contract as well. So we kind of we kind of won with that. Um that is all for the new guys. I just wanted to.
SPEAKER_00For the guys we didn't mention last week and and uh I mean these were kind of surprises to me. Like I said, I wasn't keeping up with uh all the all the trades and all the things, just the big name ones. Um but uh it it definitely gives me uh some assurance that we have some some depth and possibly some options.
SPEAKER_02We have a lot of depth. I mean there is also there's potential for more depth, I will say.
SPEAKER_00You mean more trades?
SPEAKER_02More trades, I think more pickups, more trades. And also of the depth we have right now, we have like there's we have a bunch of smaller guys who are gonna be like playing in our triple A. Like MJ Melendez, I remembered this time. Um couldn't remember last episode. Uh MJ Melendez, because now we got Mike Talkman. MJ Melendez is not playing on this roster. Realistically, he's going to be in AAA. Which is fun. Like I think he's gonna be good in triple A. Um, and then we have a bunch of catchers. Like we have so much catcher insurance. It is That is uh something new. Yeah, we have I think we might have like five catchers or more. Like crazy. We have a lot, because we got uh we already had like three. Because we had yeah, we had Alvarez, Terenz, and Sanger, and then we got I think two more on like minor league deals. Because I know we got at least one, uh we got one of the Dodgers, and I think we got somebody else too. Like we have a lot of catcher uh catcher safety. Yeah.
Catcher Glut And Lefty Bullpen Needs
SPEAKER_02Um as well as catchers, I just wanted to mention somebody who I saw recently, uh, who I didn't even realize we got, like we got him like a week ago, who's Brian Hudson, which I think is really gonna be good for our bullpen because we have like no lefties, and realistically we're kinda running out of time for move making. So I'm starting to think this might be who we're going into the season with. And Brian Hudson is a guy we just picked up, very low budget. He like he was with the Brewers, but he pitched only like 15 innings. Like he wasn't really.
SPEAKER_00He wasn't used or was he injured?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I like know nothing about him. I just like Or was he just nun? Was he just a nut like person?
SPEAKER_00He's like, uh Hudson again.
SPEAKER_02I mean, as the Brewers are a big vibes organization. He might have been too tall. All their pitchers are like five feet tall. Um But I'm really I'm I wanna see what he can do in spring training. He's he's gonna be one of the guys I'm looking at because him and Brandon Waddell, I think is his name, because he's gonna be our first uh pitcher in spring training, and those are like two guys who realistically we don't have much room in the bullpen.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. They have the most approved.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we have like we have a lot of guys in the bullpen and not a lot of lefties, and they're both lefties, and they're both like they're both gonna be fighting. Especially we have less than other teams because it's likely we're gonna run like a six-man rotation. So there's only seven spots or something for bullpen, so it's looking it's looking rough. But I think one of those guys is gonna make it because they're both like I think a lot of players we're not gonna see that much in spring training because they're proven guys, but there are some guys that I think we should be looking at, like Brendan Modell and Ryan Hudson, Brian Hudson, because it's like they they have things to prove and they might amaze us and they might be really good this season. Um, yeah.
Spring Training Battles And Roster Squeeze
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I figured I just might might add that. Speaking though, sorry to keep ranting.
SPEAKER_00Alright, please, please continue, please continue. I'm being educated, so I'm I'm I'm learning about all these situations. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_02I saw a really interesting uh trade proposition because we do need left-handed guys in the bullpen. Yeah. And right now we're just thinking about like eh, he's kind of okay. He might have he might be good.
SPEAKER_00So um last week we had the the the four wishes for you for this Mets this season. Now um you have this might be like a section that we do every week. What's your wish for the Mets this week?
SPEAKER_02I mean, my wish for the Mets this week is I mean, honestly, I still I think I have four again. I think I have four again.
SPEAKER_00Let's go, let's go.
SPEAKER_02A little bit of it's repeating. It's ambitious, yeah. But yes, on the topic of pitchers, on the topic of left-handed bullpen guys, the Tampa Bay Rays have a reliever named Garrett Clevinger. Um,
Weekly Mets Wishes: Clevinger, SS, Marte, Buxton
SPEAKER_02he's very good because he throws very fast, and we don't have we don't have any left-handed guys that throw hard. Yeah. Um and we don't have much guys that throw hard at all. And he could be a place if one of if they have an appetite to take a Ronnie Mauricio. I know you love Ronnie Mauricio, but more and more treat Ronnie. More and more Ronnie's looking like a cunha redundancy. Yes. Though it is it is funny that we do kind of need a cunha now, no shortstop. Um which that was Garrett Clevinger. Moving on, no shortstop. I have seen some people talking about Jose Iglesias could be brought back. Because right now, he's got nothing going on. He's doing nothing.
SPEAKER_00Is he just just in the in limbo?
SPEAKER_02I don't know if he's a free agent or if he's with the Padgers, but the Padgers don't want him. He's not very good.
SPEAKER_00I think, I think, I think let's let's wait until the spring uh training and I'm just all I'm saying. So tell me more about Garrett.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay. Garrett Clevinger. I know, I mean that's I kinda only had that to say. I think we could get rid of one of these extra guys that we have, like we have so many guys in the camp. I think we could get rid of somebody and a couple of catchers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Give or take a few. Um We need we need somebody to throw hard, and we need somebody who's good and left-handed, and it's like he is a good fit. Though I was looking, and I don't there aren't links to him in the mats. There are links to him being traded, but it's unlikely that he'll go to the mets, which is a shame. But that's still if I was hoping if I was hoping So that's number one. That's number one. Number two was Iglesias. Okay. Because or anybody to fill shortstop because it doesn't look like they want uh Brett Beatty to fill it in or Bo Bachet. Yeah, yeah. It doesn't look like they want any of those guys other than maybe Ronnie Mauricio. Which is okay.
SPEAKER_00Um It's better than okay. He's gonna be our star. He's gonna be our all-star. No, Ronnie Maurice. Ronnie Mauricio's gonna be the the shit.
SPEAKER_02He's gonna be He's gonna be like Like Martin. I mean, I think he's gonna be like the the Marlin's all-star third baseman. You know, like I feel like I think he's going to go to one of the smaller market teams and he's gonna be the best player on that team in third or second base. I think he's more of a stationary.
SPEAKER_00I don't like it though.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so so uh Iglesia's number two. What's number three?
SPEAKER_02I will say, talking about Marte, we're not bringing him back. We got Mike talk to him. We're not re-signing Marte on an actual contract. It's just not gonna happen.
SPEAKER_00But what does Soto have to say?
SPEAKER_02I mean what I'll say is his BFF is leaving. Nobody's nobody's offered Marte anything from what I've seen. If we just bring him back as like a coach, or
Fan Wish: Invite Sad Boys Mets Club
SPEAKER_02like they like this happens sometimes. They don't want to rehire a guy to play, but he's just he's just gonna hang around spring training, he's gonna hang around camp and be there for the vibes. I would love that for him. Like I feel like he's he can be our guy if he feels like, yeah, you know what, maybe it is time.
SPEAKER_00But he's good enough to go to another team. I mean, I know, but nobody's gotten him. That's the craziest thing. Not yet, not yet. This is this is the thing. This is the thing. What's gonna happen is is uh all uh what happens often to you is at two two to three months in the season, people start getting picked up, like the the scraps start getting picked up.
SPEAKER_02I know, it's just it's crazy to me to think that Mike Tauchman on a minor league deal happened before. I mean Marte has like he is a good projected value. Like he is He is, man. He's still got a lot of stuff there. Yeah. But it's like I want him back, and I don't think we're getting him back unless it's like uh in a a position with the team rather than on the team. Well that's that's uh So that's a wish. That's a wish for me. To Mark, yes, to him. And then this last one is the most unrealistic, um, which is Byron Buxton for our outfield because the twins are kind of imploding right now. They're like second best guy was uh second best guy got injured, second best pitcher, and their first best pitcher was on the trade market all offseason. He's still there, but they wanted to trade him. Um and if we gave them enough for Byron Buxton, I have seen that it could be argued it could be arguably better for us to do both Byron Buxton and Louis Rober have like are injury prone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, so there's flexibility there.
SPEAKER_02But then if they
Injuries, Port St. Lucie Upgrades, Cohen Philosophy
SPEAKER_02but if they play less of the season, if they're I feel like we've got like four people behind Robert. I mean it's like But do we because like I don't think Tyrone Taylor's making it. Like, go at Tyrone Taylor.
SPEAKER_00I'm not even going to Tyrone Taylor. Sorry, Tyrone. Uh I'm not calling Tyrone.
SPEAKER_02Tyrone Taylor, I I will hire you. I will personally hire you.
SPEAKER_00I'm not one of those uh people making memes about your uh overinflated stats.
SPEAKER_02Um hate perfectly inflated.
SPEAKER_00Um but I'm just saying, like all the people we just got. Like, oh, there's like there's like two or three people uh uh behind.
SPEAKER_02There's a there's a fear because we have Luis Rober, and then we have Mike Tuckman, who should was more realistically going to be like a platoon in right with Carson Benge over center field. Um and then we have a couple of guys like Beatty, and even I bet Polanco could play. Like Beatty's another guy, or Polanco's another guy who can bounce around, though I think he's mainly infield. And then we have like uh MJ Melendez. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's not the best.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, we we need we need I mean, yeah. I mean, we can only hold the to have.
SPEAKER_02It's not gonna happen. It's not gonna happen.
SPEAKER_00It's it's but it's it's I think I think the first month, uh, this first three to four weeks of spring training uh is gonna be telling. You know, they're gonna know right away if they're gonna have to do those kind of make sacrifices.
SPEAKER_02I don't even know. Because those those were my four things. We might as well move right along.
SPEAKER_00Hold on. So you're done with those four things? You don't have anything else? Those are my four things. I have I have uh I have I'd like to add something to it because I like to add something to it. I think that uh my wish is that the Mets invite you and me to a game. Officially that the Mets invite us to a game. That'd be my wish. My f my the to add the fifth. I'll I like if it's gonna be a tradition where you have several things on a wish list and I'll just add a little cherry on top. That's my wish. Mets officially invite Sad Boys Mets Club to uh City Field to a game.
SPEAKER_02I mean, we must have like at least 50 years of patronage up to this point. Like Kimba.
SPEAKER_00We'll do anything. We'll do anything. Tell us what we need to do. I mean, we'll we'll uh you know, we'll post a Mets thing every day saying how much we
No Team Captain: Shared Leadership
SPEAKER_00love the Mets. Um and we live the thing is we live in LA, like or LA County area, and uh it's not the easiest thing to be a Mets fan here. Um at all. It's not hard. It's not hard. There's a lot, there's a lot of Mets fans out here. I mean, when we go to Dodger games sometimes when the Mets are playing, there seems to be a a good amount of Mets fans. But you know, we always have to wear helmets because I keep pelting batteries. But that's my wish. Mets invite us officially, invite the sad boys Mets Club to City Field. It would be fun. We'll be we'll be we'll be polite. So now that we've uh officially begun spring training, um people uh players have reported to Point St. Lucie and and uh and uh the injury list has been.
SPEAKER_02I mean, luckily it's not even it's not that bad. It's more so we have a lot of guys on injury watch. Um so I I I fear there's a couple things we won't find out about during spring break just yet. Like we won't find out the extent of our team. Um because I mean obviously Lindor's out, but then they also have Bailey, who was feeling a little bit of like hamstring, I think. His hamstring was acting up, so he's still playing, he's still fine, but he's gonna be taking it really slowly in spring training, as well as uh Rober, Alvarez, and I believe Polanco are all going to be taking it slow because they have injury history, which is like is good because truthfully I wouldn't. Polanco is really like the only one that um But even Robert like we I I'd want to have seen how they work with No no no But Polanco's the one who's like he's uh something crazy is gonna happen with him no matter
Favorite Players Right Now
SPEAKER_02no matter what we do it's gonna be pretty because he's like I mean I've seen him I've seen him training. It like looks it looks exciting, but he's like he's a weird first baseman. Yeah. He's playing first base like a short stuff, which is fun.
SPEAKER_00How so?
SPEAKER_02He's he's being a lot more I mean I guess I'm more comparing it to Pete Alonso. He's very fluid.
SPEAKER_00It's he's spry. He's not he's not a polar bear.
SPEAKER_02Exactly, exactly. Big big difference to look at and watch. And he's kind of been tearing it up in batting practices as well. Oh, yeah. I'm excited for him. I'm really I'm really excited for that. Um speaking of Port St. Lucie, they just broke ground on the new facilities that have been in talks for like five years. They're completely upgrading everything.
SPEAKER_00So wait, they've are they done or they're starting to?
SPEAKER_02They just started, but it should be done by next spring training.
SPEAKER_00Like it should be not this spring training, the one that we're going to.
SPEAKER_02Not this one, but hopefully we'll go to the next one. Um we'll see. We'll see how next season pans out.
SPEAKER_00Actually, um, if anybody's watching this, anybody out there who's been to spring training, who's been to uh Point St. Lucie's C and the Mets in spring training, we are curious of what that experience is like compared to, say, City Field or Shea Stadium, um, what it's like to uh see them play in that uh environment. Does it feel like, you know, like a little league compared to major league, or is it just like, hey, it's just a different thing?
SPEAKER_02Does it feel like watching the Sacramento Athletics?
SPEAKER_00Or the Bad News Bears?
SPEAKER_01I would rather watch the bad news bears.
SPEAKER_00So that we're looking forward to that. We're looking forward to that. We're gonna see a few games uh in in a few weeks, actually. And uh we'll be excited to to see some stuff. Hopefully we'll have some cool footage from there.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited. New facilities, all thanks to Steve Cohen. I know we have like sometimes I have complaints about Steve Cohen. Date, but it is nice to see him, because like the that facility being upgraded is for the players, and it's always nice to see effort being made to make the players have better times, because that's like that's good. The players are happy, they play better.
SPEAKER_00It's always nice to see. I mean, it's like I also saw a video of uh I think it was uh Steve Cohen's wife.
SPEAKER_02She everybody like she's very active with the team. Everybody knows her, everybody likes her. That's really cool.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I saw her like welcoming uh new players, and and uh you know, you don't think that that's like uh they're there folks are on the ground and hands-on and and uh but that's cool, that's really cool, you know. Um I I don't know this is like that kind of a tangent
Opening Day Lineup And Rotation Predictions
SPEAKER_00because we're talking about Cohen, but uh the whole thing with uh Soto and Lindor and and Nimmo about we were just talking casually earlier about uh people wanting someone to be a captain or people players wanting to be a captain. For example, Nimmo's case, he wanted to be the captain, and you know there was a lot of Lindor vibes. Uh and then of course, since Soto is like our all-star player, they would be naturally they'd make him a captain if there was a captain, but um Cohen kind of straight out said that Marcus Semyon, who's known to be a captain, who's been there, done that. Um but uh you know Cohen said that there won't be a captain on on his team. I didn't see why.
SPEAKER_02I didn't I didn't get to see that interview, but uh did you hear I I'm paraphrasing, but I think it's mainly just about it's meant to be a team where everybody's doing like everybody's doing some leading, everybody is a team player, it's less like it's less like the Yankees. Um it's less like the Yankees where it's like it's Aaron Judge and his band of friends. Yeah, it's like it should be everybody is like everybody is the face of the team rather than just the one guy. Um even though having that captain role can be good. But like we saw even without the role, Lindor was like acting as the captain and it was working.
SPEAKER_00Spiritually, he was just moving moving people, yeah, moving people.
SPEAKER_02I think I think he's right to say that we don't need uh we don't need the captain. Yeah, it's too much too much drama.
SPEAKER_00Um I think the last time we had one, um, kind of messed him up. He was like a great player until he became captain and then like had all these back injuries and stuff. It's a curse. I don't want to say anything. It's like his his uh Kinect jersey.
SPEAKER_02Gotta love the curses. I mean, it's not baseball without the superstition.
SPEAKER_00Uh I'm gonna go completely left field. Um I'm gonna say ask you who's your favorite player in baseball right now?
SPEAKER_02Baseball right now at this very moment. Overall. Would it be crazy to say Jonah Tong?
SPEAKER_00I just I really I didn't think you'd pick someone from the Mets, but yes, that'd be crazy. That's awesome. I mean he seems he kind of almost seems not like he's playing baseball. He's just I will I just He seems like he's a like an elf who's just like appeared in in uh in uh Mets land. He reminds me of like uh like like the movie Elf. Like he just he's got this sort of like innocence about him that's kind of like fresh, and he's like, hey everybody, we're here to payment.
SPEAKER_02No, I just you saying it seems like he's not even playing baseball.
SPEAKER_00Like No, I mean he's he's a he's he's he's he's he's he's he's going to be amazing.
SPEAKER_02You said that I thought of Anthony Volpe. Like that's that's what that makes that's what that statement makes me think of. But no, I I I love his vibe. I'm just like in terms of off field, like I've uh I've like I've I'm following his Instagram. He's just like a pleasant guy. Like I just I like his vibes. In terms of on field, because I don't think we're even gonna see Tong until like summer maybe, uh which is good. I think he needs the time. Um terms of on field player in general, I will say I've been very Yankees heavy for some reason. I will say Austin Wells because I just found out he's Dominican and he's white Dominican, which is I I feel a little like because everybody's clowning on him, like who's this guy? He thinks he's part of the gang. I didn't know that. He's on he's on the world baseball classic team. He's gonna be playing on the on the for the. He is our catcher, he's our starting catcher, and he's as white as they can.
SPEAKER_00This is how out of it I am. So Austin Wells, uh, wow, he got he got lucky with that name. He probably would have been called something else. I mean, he's like I mean he's literally. Austin Wells actually, if he if he was you know straight up, straight, straight, straight Dominican, Austin Wells would have been his first name. It would have been Austin Wells Dominguez.
SPEAKER_01I mean, that's not a bad name. That's that's fun.
SPEAKER_00Austin Wells, don't mean it, don't ming it. Um but uh but no, hey man, we can joke with Dominican, it's okay. It's alright. Austin Wells.
SPEAKER_02I'm I'm
Fantasy Baseball Plans With Listeners
SPEAKER_02liking his vibes. I'm I'm having I'm excited to see him play.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, with the Yankees.
SPEAKER_02With with the Dominicans. Okay, yeah, yeah. That's right, that's right.
SPEAKER_00Because we'll be watching. We'll be watching, hopefully.
SPEAKER_02I'll be rooting against him when we're playing the Yankees. But other than that, I'm excited. Um yeah, that's my guy. What about you? Do you have any any guys you're thinking of?
SPEAKER_00Um I don't know. I'm just I'm kind of I'm kind of I I feel like I was on in the uh in the uh when we got Soto. I thought I was like, oh okay, well he's you know all-star player like crazy and and biggest contract ever and blah blah blah. I was kind of I've always been kind of slightly underwhelmed by him. And I something's happened in the last few weeks where I feel like a click, like something's turned, and I feel like
World Baseball Classic: DR Power Rankings
SPEAKER_00he's going to explode this year. I feel like he is I just feel like it's like there's something that makes me go.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that was a down season. That was his best season ever, and he was awful for like the first couple of months. Like that's crazy to put in perspective. He had a bad start to the year. Yeah, rough, right. And he was like incredible when you look at the stats. I mean, when you saw him play, it's like I'm so excited. And maybe it's the left field. Maybe the left field is gonna click for him. It's gonna be better.
SPEAKER_00That's who I'm excited about right now. I mean, and I know that's like an easy, that's a low-hanging fruit, but I just I feel like he's gonna be the third best player in the movie behind uh Aaron Judge, Shoei Otani.
SPEAKER_02It's a shame.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so wait, so so so between those two or and Bobby Witt Jr. I mean, there's a lot of there's a lot of discussion online between Shoe Otani. Otani and Otani and Judge.
SPEAKER_02Judge, I let me just say I've never seen compilations of Shohe Otani getting hit in the head with a ball. And I have seen that for Aaron Judge, and that is enough for me. Like, dude, you're the you're the outfielder. Somebody tosses you the ball and you're like, oh, it just hits you. Like, come on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that's the second best player in in baseball.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you have to, he's he's not the greatest fielder, but he is the best hitter, like, by far, but still. Shoyotani is like great pitcher, even better hitter. Yeah, that's crazy. Though not a Csaioung candidate. I I keep seeing people are like, I think he's gonna this is gonna be a Csaioung year. I don't think Shoey Otani's winning a Cy Young because I think when you look at how his pitching versus the Csaioung winners, he's great, but you still lose a little bit of that, like you still lose a little bit of that pitching because you're so good at batting, you can't spend all your time getting great at pitching. But he's still hitting the bigger.
SPEAKER_00I mean that's that's uh that's a theory that goes around. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I still think Shoyotany is going to be the best. I think he's still gonna be great, at least until like 2030. But I think I'll say it, I think Jansoto might be better for longer. If we look at the next 10 years, I think one soda's gonna be better.
SPEAKER_00I mean, let's hope that's it earns that contract.
SPEAKER_0215 years. We're 14 now, we're one year down.
SPEAKER_00So, um we're just a weekend spring training, right? Um, if we had to predict what the lineup looks like right now, as of now, um, and uh and let's say Lindor starting first day.
SPEAKER_02Lindor, I think he's gonna start first day.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let's just say that. Let's just put that out in the universe. Lindor starting first day. What does the lineup look like to you?
SPEAKER_02I mean, I love I love our lineup.
SPEAKER_00I think it's gonna be Just for the first turners, like the first, you know.
SPEAKER_02I mean, first game. You know, just first game. Alvarez catching. Yeah. I hate you, Luis Trans. Um I think Hore Polanco first base. Okay, Marcus Semyon second, Lindor short. Um see this is where it's interesting though. No, I think Boba Show will be our third base. I think last week I was VH. Last last week I was less high on him. But people are like looking at it. People are like, I don't know.
Ticket Dreams And Miami Plans
SPEAKER_02I don't know. This is like he's kinda pretty okay.
SPEAKER_00No, I just I think he's gotta keep Beatty in there, man.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's oh sorry. I want no, I want Beatty to have everyday feeling.
SPEAKER_00Beatty's gotta be in there. Because I think uh here's the thing.
SPEAKER_02Well, if I was hoping, yeah, if I wasn't being realistic, it would be Beatty, third, Beaubachette DH.
SPEAKER_00Bichette is Bichette's gotta be Lindor and Beatty's backup.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's like he's gotta be like we we have a lot of third base backup. Let's let's make Polanco, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh I mean other people. Uh Mauricio. Mauricio, um Vientos.
SPEAKER_02Gotta love that he's still on the team.
SPEAKER_00Vientos still hanging around.
SPEAKER_02I think this is gonna be his year. He's gonna turn it around. Bad there was a bad message 2025. He just wasn't the same guy. He's gonna turn it around.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so so let's just go with your first thought. Bobishit on third, Lindor uh shortstop, uh Simeon uh Simeon second. Simeon second Polanco first. Blanco first. It means uh Carson.
SPEAKER_02See, this is where I do think I think Carson I think Ben just gonna make our starting day. I think he's
Dominican Word Of The Week: Ponchao
SPEAKER_02Yes. I'm being positive.
SPEAKER_00I think Ben I think it wouldn't hurt to have somebody new, like uh like uh something, somebody fresh. Yes um on on the team the first day.
SPEAKER_02Like people would people were saying that we shouldn't rush him, but I think he's ready.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I think so too. I think so too. I mean, because it's just like you know, let the veterans be the backup.
SPEAKER_02I think I think I would love to see uh Soto Rober bench. I would love that, and then honestly, though, if we're be if we're being like that, we could also put Beatty DH. If if Bachette is uh third and Vientos isn't hitting that good, put put Beatty DH. He can he can even pitch. I'll I'll put Beatty as our starting pitcher. I don't care. I'll stand on it.
SPEAKER_00Um say Beatty is our starting pitcher.
SPEAKER_02Oh no, you're right. Bullpen, bullpen. He'll be our closer. Um and I think Freddie Peralta is gonna start because I think it's a good one.
SPEAKER_00So we're going with Robert and and Soto for the rest. Yes. Okay, I didn't hear that part. Um so uh starting pitcher, first day, Peralta.
SPEAKER_02Peralta Peralta for sure, for sure, Peralta.
SPEAKER_00Um and and if there were two pitchers that that came after him, you know. Let's say let's say three to to kind of like uh uh carry it out to the ninth and a ninth inning person. Who's our closing?
SPEAKER_02I think if I I'm I'm putting my numbers on. I think Peralta's giving us six innings. Yeah. I think he's giving us six. I think he could even give us more six innings. I think it's either Devin Williams or Luke Weaver is gonna be
Movie Talk: Hits And Misses
SPEAKER_02our ninth inning guy. Honestly, I'll put Devin Williams. I think there's some uh brewer synergy. I think that might be nice. Um, and then to fill out seventh and eighth. Give me I wanna see Christian Scott. I wanna see him take two. I wanna see him take them both, because Christian Scott is looking good. Christian Scott is looking like because he got injured, he got injured, and so he didn't play it all last year, but this spring training, he's like there's uh there's a clip from the batting practice of him striking Soto out, which is always a good example of like if you're gonna strike anybody out to prove your pitching, it's gonna be Soto. Um yeah, I wanna see that. I wanna see Peralta, um Peralta, Scott, Devin Williams. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay, cool. There's your uh Frankie prediction first day lineup.
SPEAKER_02Lineup order. I wanna see if I can I wanna see how close I'll get. This is this is what this is for. I wanna see how close I can be. Lindor leadoff, of course. Yeah. Because he will be healthy. I think Lindor leadoff. Does Soto hit second? No. No, but where does he hit? Fourth! Fourth!
SPEAKER_00Yes!
SPEAKER_02Fourth! Fourth!
SPEAKER_01That's good.
SPEAKER_02But no, I think third. Because he should have some protection behind him and have some guys on in front of him. That's what I'm thinking.
SPEAKER_00Okay, but but what are you thinking as far as before and after?
SPEAKER_02I think I'm I'm kinda Ooh. Should Bachet be after him?
SPEAKER_00Bachet should be fifth.
SPEAKER_02Bachet's fifth. Okay, what are you thinking about? Ooh, Beatty second. Yeah. Oh my goodness. Yeah. So Polanco third or Robert third? No, uh or Benge.
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_02Or Alvarez.
SPEAKER_00I don't know about Benge. Benji's Alvarez is.
SPEAKER_02Alvarez is our eight. So you're either thinking Polanco or Robert in front of No, then then I would push it.
SPEAKER_00So I'd be I'd do Lindor, Beatty, Soto, Bichette, uh, Polanco, Robert, Alvarez, Bench. God, that's a good lineup.
SPEAKER_02Yes, when you look at that lineup, that's like, that is nice.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, if they hit.
SPEAKER_02I think they're hitting. I think they're hitting good.
SPEAKER_00I mean, the the question mark is always the second half. It's
Wrap-Up And Calls To Action
SPEAKER_00like just it's like really kind of like because if if these guys I mean honestly, I think Alvarez are gonna be great. I hope so. I hope he's I hope he gets that like fire again, like the like. Somebody break his somebody break his finger.
SPEAKER_01That's what we need. Just the one finger, and we'll be good. He's gonna be incredible.
SPEAKER_00That's our lineup prediction. So, um With this is uh Sad Boys Mets Club. And um Frankie had a question, Franklin had a question about fantasy baseball and how does it work and all that. And I think uh I haven't played fantasy baseball since 1997. Since 1997.
SPEAKER_01Back in my day.
SPEAKER_00Um, and it was really more of a work thing, like the people that I was working with at the time, and uh and uh it was just kind of you know, you you pooled in money and then everyone just picked their players and uh we would trade and and uh you would just go on the stats of every day. And now it's like everything is so automated that you know that it's all locked in. Like you who you pick and I think you can still do trades though. Oh you know, you could totally do trades. It's just it's it's such a it's such a setup thing. Like I remember that it was at the beginning of the sort of internet being uh resourceful for that kind of uh activity because they just uh they made these things easy. So you so you you'd go online and and you had I like I haven't seen it since it can only be like ten times better where it's like you just you don't even like you just check your players every day as opposed to like we had an actual like they do like well this isn't you know whatever they do math basically. Um and uh and I remember doing it for a couple years and coming close but not close enough, and then but whatever it was, you know, the winner would win like 200 bucks, it would be like 10 people ten bucks or twenty bucks a player or whatever. Illegal illegal gambling, y'all. Uh not promoting that, but yeah, it would be fun to do it again. I mean, I guess we could we could uh reach out and say who's down to do some fantasy baseball with us. We can do twenty bucks a pop. There's gotta be a league that we can do.
SPEAKER_02I don't even care.
SPEAKER_00We gotta do it for money. It ain't really funny for money. Okay. Let's just do it for fantasy money.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, I wanna I wanna learn, I wanna do it. I feel like I have so much in my head. I could make a lot of I could make good use of it. But putting that out into the world.
SPEAKER_01Put money on it.
SPEAKER_00Okay, bad influence. Um so uh I guess this is just we're just reaching out to our friends and relatives and saying, hey, who wants to do fantasy baseball with us? We got a little time left.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Season's almost starting. We got just about a month and a half left. What else do we want to talk about?
SPEAKER_02We could talk about the world baseball classic.
SPEAKER_00Okay, world baseball classic. What are we talking about? Um, how's it looking for the Dominican roster? It's looking great.
SPEAKER_03It is looking great.
SPEAKER_00I know Austin Wells is catching.
SPEAKER_02Austin Wells in carrying this team. Um well no, I'm really excited because I've seen a lot of different rankings of teams. Yeah. And the Dominican Republic is solidly second, which is more than I would have thought USA by far.
SPEAKER_00Oh, of course, of course.
SPEAKER_02Because this is the first time they're actually letting everybody play. It's like this is an actual all-star team. They have Paul Skins and Terek Scuble in the same rotation. That's like it's that makes sense. But I thought we were gonna be third because Japan is like the reigning champions. I kind of assumed we would be third. But if you look at our team, it's great.
SPEAKER_00Tell me who's on it. This is gonna kill me. Pedro Guerrero. So Keenan Duhar.
SPEAKER_02So close, Vlad Guerrero. Um, Vlad Guerrero Jr.
SPEAKER_00Vlad Guerrero Jr. Wow.
SPEAKER_02One of, if not the best first baseman. I don't remember his name, but we have uh second baseman and Catel Marte on short, and those both guys from the D-Backs. Probably the two best of their respectable respective positions. Like, other than like Bobby Wood Jr., we kinda have the best shortstop, second base kind of thing going on. Then we have Manny Machado with second half potential to get Jose Ramirez, who I would rather have. I know you're a Manny Machado guy. I would rather have Manny Mamiers, but like Manny Machado is great. Then we have one Soto and two other guys in the outfield who I don't know, but I looked at their stats. Incredible stats. And then we have pretty good pitching. Um I know we have uh I think we have Sandy Alcantara. Other than that, a lot of like lesser known pitchers for me, but at the same time, because Dominican players aren't typically known for being the pitchers, yeah. Um that's been our that's been the struggle in past world baseball classics is the pitching. But it's like if you look at all of the stats, we kind of have like a really beefy pitching lineup too, on top of oh and I forgot to say Austin Wills catching. That's that's gonna be our team. And then we have like God, it's such a good team. It's it's it is better, it's probably some of the best team building I've uh in in the world baseball classic uh up to this point. I think it's really good. I think our biggest competition is the US. We have a chance. I'm excited. I'm excited to watch Italy too, because it's such like a weird team, but they kind of get a lot of guys, because it's like Italy is just the better Israel, because Israel is all the mediocre players who couldn't make their team, and mediocre Americans, and then Italy is all the like pretty good Americans. Like Italy. I think uh Netherlands uh was like a surprising team. Like, oh no, Netherlands wasn't a surprising team, it's just a team of like electricians. Um it was it was surprising like basketball one year. They like because I think I Netherlands or one of those European teams is always in everything, but they never have enough players or actually an actual league. Yeah, they don't they don't have an actual league, they just want to send guys out there, so it's like they're they're rec center basketball team playing like the best players in the world, and sometimes they win. And I want to see if they can.
SPEAKER_00Sounds like a Disney movie in the making.
SPEAKER_02It's I'm shocked there hasn't been one already. That's like it's the perfect thing. I'm I'm excited. I think that we're gonna crush the US. I think we're gonna crush Japan, hopefully. Um I'm more scared of Japan than I am of the US because the US is a lot of people who I feel like are supposed to be scary, but it's like but might not be playing like a hundred percent because they don't want to like. But like also, like, I feel like our team has played Aaron Judge a lot, and I've never been like, oh no, Aaron Judge is up to bat. Even though he's a great bat, like, even though you look at it as like he's supposed to be great, I've never been scared of Aaron Judge. Yeah, and they have very much a team full of that. Plus, Corbin Carroll out on hammaid bone injury, just like one just like Francisco Lindor. It's going around. It's going around. Watch your hammates, guys.
SPEAKER_00It's the new COVID.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, so I I think that we have a very good shot. Also, I think Venezuela might have a great shot. So I'm I'm excited.
SPEAKER_00Venezuela, there's a lot of I mean I believe Mark Bientos is on that too. The tickets, I mean, just going on ticket sales alone, that Dominican Republic versus Venezuela game.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's the big one.
SPEAKER_00$1,500 a ticket. I mean, that's that's how it looks like. Oh, that's there's a wish. Let's put that out there. No, no, let's put that out there. So Frankie and I are gonna see two games, uh, world's World Baseball Classic games. We're gonna go see uh, do you remember what they were?
SPEAKER_02Israel and either Nicaragua or Netherlands, because Nether are both another part.
SPEAKER_00So Dominican Republic versus Netanyahu. We're seeing the Netherlands. Oh my god, I'm so excited versus the electricians and and Dominican Republic versus Israel.
SPEAKER_02Versus Benjamin Netanyahu himself. He's gonna be there.
SPEAKER_00Um then and then, but then we'll be in Miami on that Wednesday where Dominican Republic is playing Venezuela.
SPEAKER_02We'll sit on like a big tall building and look over onto the field.
SPEAKER_00Any recommendations? If anyone has any recommendations, if there's a place, if there's a hotel like, like lobby or like uh or like like a rooftop restaurant that we can kind of just peek over. Or if anyone wants to hook it up, I'm just putting it out there. Just putting it out there. We're cool people, we're cool people, and uh, you know, hey, or anyone on the on the Dominican team. Come on, man. Come on, who galo, who galo, who galo!
SPEAKER_02Austin Wells, I'm looking at you.
SPEAKER_00Real quick, you know what? That's a good it's a good segue to do the Dominican word of the week, and I think that we should probably keep it apropos to baseball. Um and I'm gonna say the Dominican word of the week is ponchau.
SPEAKER_01Ponchiao?
SPEAKER_00Ponchau. Or ponchau. But ponchiao. Uh it sounds uh Asian, Japanese or Chinese. Ponchau. But punchao means um struck out.
SPEAKER_01So oh, because you got punched out.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you got ponchado. Uh so ponchau. Uh so so so if they're gonna strike you out. But see, see, see, see taponchau, you struck out. Ponchao. Ponchao. Ponchao. And uh, and uh my favorite thing is listening back in the day, uh watching Dominican baseball growing up in Dominican Republic. The announcers would say um it was an ad. They would stick in ads for every every sort of play. So if it was like uh if it was a third strike, they use this uh company called Pintura Popular, which is Popular Paints, and then say, they would say, He got painted he got and he got struck out by by popular paints and the pitcher's name, you know, but it's like La Ponchule Pinto, con la mejor pintura, pintura popular. And I never forget that. That's like that's such a such a crazy thing. Put up Ponchau. That's Dominican over the word, word of the week.
SPEAKER_01Ponchau.
SPEAKER_00Ponchau, ponchau.
SPEAKER_01Pon chao. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Any good movies you see lately or movies, I mean yeah, but I don't know how they relate. What did you watch? I mean, bad movies, I can tell you one right off the top of my head. Wathering heights. Oh no. Really, really bad one. Um Yeah, nothing. Nothing that works. Melania. You watched it? I watched the first 20 minutes. Because I saw I saw Dracula right before it, and the timing worked out to where I could just walk over and not get a ticket for Melania, and then I just watched the first- it was really bad. Like it was genuine because it was so it was so funny. Because she she does nothing, and it's a movie about all the things she does. And it's like there's no there's also not to make fun of her accent, but I didn't realize I left Dracula. It was like it was the same thing.
SPEAKER_00I love the memory.
SPEAKER_02And all of her assistants, by the way, all of her assistants, gay men and immigrants. It was like a crazy thing to watch just in active, and also everything she did was like, actually, I think this should be like that, and then it would cut to them, and they'd be like, We can't do that. How can we trick her into thinking that we did that? It's like, it was crazy.
SPEAKER_00That's hilarious. Alright, so that's a little that's the wrap-up for Melania coming about Dracula. Dracula. Dracula. I got the accident now.
SPEAKER_02So I'm I'm careful, I'm a big Lucasong fan, so uh, I'm uh It's I haven't seen his other stuff, but I can tell you it's better than that. Just because it's it's I haven't even seen Nosferatu, but I know what people are talking about when they say that it's just a worse Nosferatu. Like he watched Nosuratu and was like, I can do that, and he couldn't do that. Yeah, it was just it was like Wuthering Heights bad.
SPEAKER_00Oh wait, so Wuthering Heights was bad? I haven't I haven't seen any of these movies.
SPEAKER_02You well, you shouldn't see Wuthering Heights. I can tell you that right now. That's that's when you don't have to see.
SPEAKER_00The trailer's a little bit too much for me, so I just I Well I thought the trailer was great. That's like the trailer was the part that the trailer seemed like a cologne perfume commercial.
SPEAKER_02It's like that's all of her movies. That's like that emerald fennel, that's like the movie she makes. It was it was Saltburn again. Yeah. But I hated it more because I had an expectation that it would be better. Yeah, yeah. Because I didn't think they'd let her make another Saltburn with bigger name actors and an actual like book property attached that's people love. But she did.
SPEAKER_00But people love those movies.
SPEAKER_02Not many people. I think I think we all agreed. This was like this is the movie that made me realize that yeah, I actually don't like Margot Robbie.
SPEAKER_00Like oh, that's too bad. And I mean I think she she made a great um Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn.
SPEAKER_02I think she was as good as Harley Quinn, but like it's like at a certain point, you either retire or you pick a new niche, and she's done neither.
SPEAKER_00And Margo, I still love you, Margot. I still love you, Margot.
SPEAKER_02But then Jacob Balordi was in it too, and it was so much worse. I hate you, Jacob Balordi. No.
SPEAKER_00He's so good at Frankenstein. He's so good at Frankenstein.
SPEAKER_02To be fair, he looked like he just kept going. He walked from the makeup movie, the makeup didn't come off. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna add my only review for this week because it's the only movie I've seen this week was uh movie called Tender Mercies, uh, that was uh directed by Bruce Beresford, I believe from 1982 or 1983. Uh Robert Duvall is the lead in it, and uh he plays uh kind of a washed-up singer, songwriter, country singer, um who's had a lot of problems with alcohol and tried to kind of collect himself and put his life back together and is dealt with a lot of tragedy. And it's it was one of the most he won an Oscar for it, but he passed away this week, so I was just like, I needed to watch a Robert Duvall movie. And man, I I hadn't seen that movie since I was a kid, and I you know I remember being moved by it, but to see it now, to see something, and and uh, you know, like it's it's uh I I people like to say like sometimes it's like watching paint dry. I like watching paint dry. If it's the like the right colors, it's perfect. It's just it was so so poetic and and his his acting in it is so pure and honest and also I didn't know this before, but I when I saw the movie uh as a kid, but he actually sang and played in the movie, played guitar and sang, and he wrote some of the songs. So there was a certain there's definitely authenticity to it. There was truthfulness and the tragic, the sort of like it was so beautiful. It was beautiful. It's staying, it's it stayed with me for it's still with me right now. So Tender Mercies, um Robert Duvall, rest in peace, rest in power. Great actor. Um I think we can end it here.
SPEAKER_02I can end it here.
SPEAKER_00Um Yeah, let's do that. Let's do that. Uh once again, y'all. This has been Sad Boys Mets Club. Thank you for listening or watching or hanging out. Wait, wait.
SPEAKER_02I feel bad. What? You gave a positive movie review and I only gave my negative ones. Alright, give me Let me throw one in there. I don't even have to explain it. Waterlilies. It's a French movie about lesbians. It's really good. It's by uh Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, I love that movie.
SPEAKER_02It's by the same uh director. Director as one of the main characters isn't the main character in this as well, like main actresses. So I love that movie. Okay, so it was really good. It was like it was very it felt very like tangibly real and like the emotions were very it was very well made. I really liked it.
SPEAKER_00Water lilies, y'all. Water lilies, okay.
SPEAKER_02It's very hard to find though. You might have to pirate it.
SPEAKER_00Don't do it. Um alright, thank you all. Thank you all. Um This is Sad Boys Sad Boys Mets Club. Um Thank you for hanging out with us. I'm Giovanni.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Franklin.
