Episode 20: Come on England, It's Coming Home!

This week on Two Ginger Gems, it's still intercontinental.  Kate and Mikki back in Hollywood, James in a heatwave in Derby.  England beat Mexico in what was one of the best games of the tournament, Norway was stressful, and now they're facing Argentina in the semi-final with the fate of the nation on the line. James finally meets his Queen, Anne Mitchell, Dolly Rawlings from Widows, 40 years in the making, at a matinee in London. The Wes Anderson evening at the Hollywood Bowl was an absolute beautiful mess. Madonna becomes the first female US artist to have number one albums in five consecutive decades, the Rolling Stones release a new single, Line of Duty gets an urgent classic TV recommendation, and the tarot card this week is The Master. Kate thinks it means England are winning the World Cup.

Now, we when we talked about that last, of the three of us on this conversation, two of us were rooting for England and one of us was rooting for Mexico.

That that was very stressful. I was very, very disappointed with the way they played. They showed a lot of heart, but poor tacticians. Um, I blame the coach, but it is what it is, and now it's uh now it's let's go England. Let's go three lions.

For those who don't know, England, Mexico played last Sunday night. I got I was brilliant to bed. Brilliant game. Brilliant. It was delayed for an hour because of the way that I got up. I sat my alarm, I got up at 2 a.m. and I sat and watched it. And I was texting with Kate, uh, with uh my friends Lisa and Adele in LA, uh in England, my friend Gary in Australia, and we were all watching it. And it was the most stressful 90 plus minutes, yeah, and it was just such a good game. And it we you just didn't know all the way through, you didn't know until the final whistle who was going to win because it was just up and down and up and down. There were so many kind of questionable calls about penalties and fouls and VAR. It was just a real roller coaster. It was probably the best game of the World Cup that I've seen this year because it was just so exciting. Uh, and thankfully, England were victorious at the end of it.

So their strategy, you know, was really pathetic at the end of the game. They probably average in height, what, six inches shorter than England, yet for the last like 35 minutes, all they did was cross. I mean, I don't know what they were thinking. They they didn't stand a chance. It's a lot of hard.

Because it's historically there was this the stadium, Mexico never lose it. I think they've lost like twice there in 50 years or something. Yeah, it was this it was England went down to 10 men at one point. Also, there was the altitude that they were saying England weren't used to the altitude of Mexico were, and there was the historical thing, the whole Maradona hand of God debacle from like 50 years ago, that took place in the same stadium. So there was like whole whole kind of history around it. They felt like everything was against them, and I thought that was going to be a really, really tough game for England, and it was, but like uh I was saying came through it.

I yeah, I have to say, I think that is the best I've ever seen England play.

Because they matched them, and it wasn't the way England play, they were had to match how Mexico would play. I mean, they shot in there look, you know, straight away, kicking at the goals, you know, striking, striking, striking. And England had to match it, and they did, and I was so impressed with England. I was like, oh my god, literally, I said if they can win this match, they can win the the whole thing. Because if if Mexico has taught them one thing, they've taught them how to play, how to play soccer against teams who play like that, and a lot of the teams are playing like that right now. You know, maybe they haven't got all the way through now, it's more because obviously now we've also had the game that we had yet, we we record on Sunday. Yesterday we had England and Norway, and of course, Norway play a lot more like England do. So it's a lot of passing, a lot of passing. It wasn't so, you know, aggressive. Well aggressive, it wasn't so, you know, just just just try and get something in the goal and then just defend for the last 15 minutes or something. But um, yeah, so I was like, I really hope that England would go, okay, let's take what we did at Mexico and bring it into this game. I kept saying, didn't I? I was like just shouting my tits off, but I was saying, you know, you know, they're not it's it this is the world club, run for the fucking ball. You know, there was a man in front of them, and they didn't even tackle them, they just stood there like that in front of them, run at them, run at them, that's how you do it, you know? And then and this is the world cup. You could be out and you're not fucking running, run, right? That's all I've got to say about that.

So uh Lisa Lisa, who I went to England with the other day, she told me off for saying soccer. She was mentioned that you called it soccer, but then that I didn't, but then apparently later on I did as well.

I know that's what made me think I'm American, it's okay for me to call it soccer. You can call it soccer because you we we expect you to get it wrong. Then um, so then last night, last night England-Norway should have been an easier game, wasn't we got through it, we won. But like it was even then, right till the last minute, you thought, well, just don't know where this is gonna go, but thankfully we threw, and then because Argentina beat Switzerland, we're now playing Argentina on Wednesday. Yes, and that was the semi-final, so we are at the semi-final, there's four teams left, and uh and it's a little yeah, two more games and we win it. But we very excited. Well or not, it remains to be seen.

You know what? Yesterday, babe, we watched it um up at Russell's. Um as a friend of ours, I forgot my crystals. And you know my crystals have been under my telly the whole time. So um they stayed under the telly. And to be honest, when I think about it, we did leave the football on because obviously Goldie was here. I said, if it's not going well at half time, I'm gonna go home and get them. And I honestly was, but then I've remembered that my ring that I was wearing had a crystal in it, so I stuck that under the telly, babe. So perfect. So wherever I go, whatever we do, that the crystals or the ring or something's gotta be there.

So, those who don't know what the Bayer Tapestry, look it up, B-A-Y-E-U-X. It was a tapestry made at the end of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. 1066. Battle of Hastings 70 meter-long tapestry that was made there, it's nearly a thousand years old. And this tapestry has lived in France for 900 years, and the other day it's on loan to the British Museum. Did you hear about this?

No, no, no, no, it's not good. But they moved it to they brought it over in like this truck, and it was like a proper, like, you know, I don't know, climate control truck, but they brought it to display to the British Museum, it's gonna be here for a year or something like that. It's the first time that this tapestry, this thousand-year-old tapestry, has been in England in 900 years. And it's like you think of like America's just had its 250th, and we've got some old rag that's that's nearly four times as old as that, just got shipped over, and they put they wrote Mercy Buco across the black cliffs of Dover as a thank you to France for loaning us this thing. Oh, yeah. So the buyer tapestry so the Bayer Tapestry, a 900-year-old tapestry that was basically telling the story of the Battle of Hastings and King Harold and the arrow in the eye and all that shit. Yeah, and that's uh so it's it's in England, it's gonna be on display. Tickets are all sold out, but it uh for the first time on British soil in like 900 years.

I don't really understand how it got over there. I don't know if maybe it was made over there. Maybe it was made over. No, I don't know. I don't understand. I don't know how they got it, but back in the days when people pillaged things, I imagine it ended up over there, and it's been in this place on display forever, but the place is being remodeled, so while it's being remodeled, we're borrowing it. And there's a lot of what it moved.

Well, you know what? The other thing we did, babe, which was amazing this week. We went to the Hollywood Bowl and we saw there was uh three nights uh it's on for, and it's uh Wes Anderson, basically the music of Wes Anderson's movies. Do you know what we saw there as well, babe? Bumped into um Joe and Matilda.

Joe and Matilda, Joe and Mills Matilda used to be executives on Dance with the Stars in the early years, yeah, and they've got both off doing producing many, many TV shows. But uh we always got to we always see someone we know at the ball, don't we? Well, I thought Kate was gonna mention Rupert Friend.

Oh yeah. If you saw his face, you would know him, babe. But yeah, but it's funny because I've met him a couple of times before anyway. So um Bill Murray was the host of it, uh Wes Anderson was there, Jason Schwartzman was there. Who if people like Wes Anderson films, they're gonna know Jason Schwartzman. Was he in Babe Rushmore? Was he the lead in Rushmore?

Yeah, I mean he's been in a bunch of his films, but Rushmore was I think that was his first one, wasn't it?

And he spoke really spoke about that, which was amazing. Um, and um, yeah, but the best thing for me was they had in the in the film Royal Tenenbums, they have a scene with uh Margot and oh it's uh Guida Paltro's character and one of the brothers, and they play uh These Days, which was originally written by Jackson Brown, although Nico sings it from the film Underground. Um they had Jackson Brown come and sing it, babe. And honestly, I fucking cried. I fucking cried, it was so beautiful, and he um he he wrote the song, babe, when he was 16. And this song is basically about somebody looking back over their life and saying what you know what they what they've left in their life and where they are now. But he was 16 when he wrote this song. It's like mind-blowing. So he came on, he sang two songs, he sang that one, and Wes went off, because you introduced him and then he went off. But we could we could see him, couldn't we, babe?

Yeah, he sat on the floor cross-legged and he was just watching him. He was just it was oh, it was just so beautiful, and he's just him and his guitar, and he just played the first song. What was the first?

I can't remember what it was, but the second song was These Days, and then you know I can't remember, but he did say he had never sing it publicly before.

He'd never sang it publicly before this song, yeah. But it was another one from one of the movies. I have to remember what it was, babe. Um, and anyway, so then he hit the first chords of like These Days, everybody went mad, didn't they, Babe? Oh, yeah, it was just so beautiful, and I just cried, it's just the most beautiful song. And the fact that he was singing it and he wrote I know I've said this 20 times already, but he wrote it when he was 16 is unbelievable. It's like mind-blowing.

Which was beautiful. So it was the perfect evening, babe. It was absolutely the perfect evening, it was funny. It was like it was like a bunch of them have got together and said, We're gonna do the music of Wes Anderson. We're not sure how we're gonna do it, so we'll just do it in a you know, it's like want to see someone who'd done it in a barn, so it wasn't really put together properly.

Yes, it was an absolute mess, really, but it was just so much fun. I'm sure it will be better. It was better yesterday and then tonight is of Sunday that is the last night of it. Yeah, all right. Let's talk about some TV. Well, before just real quick, before you go something, yeah. So I went I went to see a play this week, which is very, very unlike me. Uh, but I went down to London with with Lisa, and this was very exciting for me because talked about Widows before. My TV show Widows from the 80s that I loved. English crime series, the lead woman in it, Dolly Rawlins, we've mentioned her before, played by Anne Mitchell. I have wanted to meet Anne Mitchell since 1983 when this thing first aired when I was 12. And I uh have wanted to meet Anne Mitchell ever since. She and I are friends on Facebook, we kind of chatted a bit back and forth. She was in a play in London, and it finishes uh it finished actually last night. But it was the last week nine of nine, and I thought this is my chance. So I contacted her and told her I was coming, and I went down with uh, like I say, my friend Lisa, we drove down to London to for the matinee performance, thinking Matinee Wednesday, nobody there, packed. We go in, it was a play called Care, which was like a real hard play to kind of watch because it was very it was about a care home and it was about old people and neglect and stuff. And it was kind of a hard play to watch, but she was in it, fantastic. She wasn't the lead, but she was fantastic. And I got to meet her afterwards, and uh I she is this she's 87, she's still acting, she's a proper, true actress. That's acting is her blood, that's all she wants to do, and she was just an absolute sweetheart. And we I got to meet her, I got my photograph taken with her, uh, and we chatted about dancing with stars, we chatted about different things, we chatted about the fact that I didn't get nominated for an Emmy this week, which is annoying. I I told her that my dog was named after her character in Widows. Um, and it was uh just adorable, and I was so excited, and it was just the perfect meeting that I've wanted to meet Anne Mitchell, Dolly Rawlins, for 40 years, and I finally did on Wednesday. And I I'm so so so pleased that I did. It was like the just an absolute wonderful, wonderful experience. And you know how much I love Dolly Rollins.

Right, so the Emmys were announced, and I went, Oh, I'll see the list, and I put in for dancing dancing with the stars, and it said that you had got nominated, and so I was like, Oh my fucking god! So I'm texting you, oh my god, baby got nominated, oh my god, like and of course I didn't wrong.

Well, we will give huge kudos to the show because the show was nominated for best yes variety competition reality show, and it's first time in 10 years, first time in 10 years, which is Dan's Conrad Green. I mean, the show would did well for years, it was doing really, really well, it got nominated a lot, and then it kind of you know, these big reality shows like Idol and uh and dancing, they just stopped getting nominated. They didn't have as many of those, and so Conrad's brought the show back, it's done really well. Last year was the best show, best season in years, it was the 20th anniversary, and if any year should have been nominated, it was this one, and it got nominated. So kudos to the show, and there was a couple of there were other nominations for technical direction, which is uh or the cameraman and yourself. Um, although you're not listed on it, it's your it's your world, it's your people. And I saw uh a couple of people online thanking you. Um so you got your name. As well, they should.

You pull that thing together why your name isn't on that list. I do not know. Yes, I don't know, because it's because of the of your actual title, but you should be included in that nomination. So kudos to that. Uh, then there was, I think, six nominations total for dancing with the stars. One of them was not production design, but uh, I I literally was walking out of the theatre and I got a text from Steve, who I work with, and he texts me saying we haven't been nominated. And I'm now I get to the bottom of the stairs and I get a text from Kate saying you've been nominated. So I looked at the list and I was like, What happened? And then that's when I met Anne Mitchell, and so it was like, you know what, this is it's it's all good for him because this has made up for it as I told her.

So was there was there one was there one moment there where you thought, wait a second, did I miss something? And I actually did get nominated.

I I no, I I I because Steve had told me we hadn't been, and I knew Steve would be looking because that we we that so I knew that we hadn't, but then when Kate said sent me the text, it was I didn't think we had, but I was like, is there a possibility that Steve read the wrong list? Or is it more or is the more likely option that Kate had?

I was gonna say that was it. If it had been the other way around, if I'd said, oh babe, you didn't win, and then Steve said you did, you wouldn't have even thought about for a second. Oh my god, I was like, Oh no. I think I said it to Russ as well. I think I said to Russ, oh James, and he's like, Where are you looking, babe?

I don't think Yeah, but Russ Bless Russ got Russ directed the Dick Van Dyke thing that we were all nominated for. Russ Russ couldn't even find his own name when he got nominated. So don't know when he says, Where are you looking? He's he's probably on the last year's list. It was the time I I called to congratulate him, and he didn't, he was like, Where? Where didn't even know he's not yeah, it's not he's not a reliable source.

But there was do you know what there was some great, great nominations that we've talked about on this show? Uh Widows Bay. How many do they get?

Yeah, they got they got nine, they got 19, the third most um nominations by program.

And I spoke about the woman who played the mother of Aaron Bassett. She made she was so amazing. She got nominated for that though those two scenes they had that were so bloody amazing.

So talking about the Emmys uh leads us right into some TV shows. Let's talk about some TV.

Oh, you know what? I'm just gonna mention, I'm just gonna mention classic TV, just because there was an amazing series called uh uh line of duty, and it's on it's from the BBC. And I'm just gonna read you what they call they say about it. It's one just because this is how the BBC uh describe it. Bent Coppers and the Detectives sent sent to stop them. So that's the that's the show. It's been going since 2012, it finished in um 2021, and um it is absolutely bloody amazing.
