Round 8 of the AFL shapes as a pivotal point in the season, with contenders starting to separate from the chasing pack and pressure building on those slipping behind.
Several blockbuster matchups headline the round, with top-four hopefuls going head-to-head in games that could have major implications for finals positioning. Form teams will look to extend winning streaks and cement themselves as genuine premiership threats, while inconsistent sides are running out of time to find rhythm.
There’s also plenty of intrigue around the middle of the ladder, where a logjam of teams are fighting to stay in touch with the eight.

Welcome back, pretty friends. You're listening to the podcast where the love of the game runs in the family. I'm Matt and I'm here with my dad Mark, and every week the Don means all things foodie will be turning through the biggest moments when the game's just gone. Breaking down the wind, losses, and everything in between. Plus, we're looking ahead to the weekends matchups. Check out thoughts, predictions, and a bit of banter along the way. Whether you're a diehard supporter or just other good game, you're in the right place. Let's get into the podcast. AKA Stories and Science. It was a big weekend of Anzac Day Football. There were some big losses, and there was a close game to close out the rounds. Let's take a look at the results.
SPEAKER_02First game to look at, Max, is Bulldog versus the Swannies. Swans won by 66 points. Aaron Norton had one big jump and really nearly hurt his neck really badly. Did you see that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Couldn't believe how high he got. Then he had this crazy flip landed on his neck. Looked dangerous. Luckily, no serious injuries. Yeah. Charlie Curnow from the Swans, another big goal scoring game. He kicked seven.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_02And Bulldogs' injuries, unfortunately, continue to mount.
SPEAKER_01They're making the injuries making a worse team.
SPEAKER_02I know.
SPEAKER_01Next game is Richmond Melbourne. Rich Melbourne won by 54. Richmond were close for the first half.
SPEAKER_02They were, they played alright at the start of the game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Pickett. He kicks four. He ran and kicked a goal. He ran from the midfield and kicked a goal. Oh altogether, that was a total distance of 86 metres.
SPEAKER_02Whoa, that was a big goal. And now we've got Hawthorne versus Gold Coast down in Tasmania.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Hawks won by 49 points. Gungston kicked five goals and four behinds. Amon had 31 touches for the Hawks. Anderson kicked had 31 touches just after having that little appendix surgery last week.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Gold Coast is struggling to play well against the top team.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. They looked well at the start of the season.
SPEAKER_02They started this game well, but then the Hawks kicked away.
SPEAKER_01Essendon versus Collywood. The Pies won by 77. I know you're listening, Isaac. I'm sorry that he tip the bombers.
SPEAKER_02He was very upset, I hear.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I hear. He was running around the house. Oh no.
SPEAKER_02No annoyed. Oh no.
SPEAKER_01He's my friend from the footy team. If you want me to be exact. I can't believe I made that mistake. I'm sorry. Here we go, let's get back into this stats. Pendlebury, 43 touches, and his fourth Anzac Day, best player on ground medal.
SPEAKER_02Not bad for an old boy, hey?
SPEAKER_01Nah. Pendles kicked a goal on an Essendon player, Archie Roberts, who he coaches in junior footy. The old players are still teaching the young the younger ones.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was funny him doing that. Apparently he's not gonna let Archie let that down that he kicked the goal on him in AFL football.
SPEAKER_01No, definitely not.
SPEAKER_02Then we've got Port versus Geelong. Port caused a bit of an upset here and won by 30 points. Dangerfield was a bit injured, they lost blitzars early. And Port Adelaide's forward line really opened up the Geelong back line.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Mitch Georgiard's kicked four goals and Tom Stewart had 22 kicks. Good to see Port get that win.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely. I think Port are now gonna get a bit better.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're playing they're playing good footy. And Georgiardis is playing really well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely. He's kicked a few goals.
SPEAKER_02And then we got Dockers versus Carlton, but the Dockers got up by 14 points. It was a funny game this one. The Dockers hit the lead by 40 points at the start of the last quarter, and then Carlton kicked some more goals and got the margin back to 14.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But they were only really behind by two goals all game. They played pretty well, they just couldn't get enough goal scoring opportunities. Brody Kemp kicked four for Carlton. Um, but Dockers were strong, then hold tribute match, it was a good game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Saints versus Eagles. Saints won by 101 points. Higgins kicked five goals, Flynn Ryan kicked three, and one game Miller had 34 touches.
SPEAKER_02Eagles really struggled that game, didn't they, Maxi? Yeah. They moved the ball really slow, and the Saints just tore us apart.

SPEAKER_01Um the la he's an Eagles fact. The last time Eagles lost by 101 points, the following week they won. So that was round 22 that they lost, 2023. They lost by 101 points against the Dockers, and then they won against Bulldogs in round 23, 2023.
SPEAKER_02Let's hope they can do that again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Then we've got Brisbane versus Adelaide, where Brisbane were too strong and won by 52 points. Brisbane just got the job done against the Crows. But Crows wanted to try and get up against the top team, but they just couldn't get it done. Oscar Allen's out for four months, I think, after breaking his foot. Lockie Neal had 42 touches, Charlie Cameron kicked four, and there were rumours after the game that he might change his song from No More Country Road to something else. He's getting a bit sick of that song, apparently. Wonder what he would choose.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Maybe he'll choose something like yo, hap potero, hap potero.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like L E Yo. GWS North. GWS just got backed hit by seven points. North was so close the whole game. Just couldn't find a way to win. There was a late goal for GWS, but it was actually a point.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the goal review system's made the news this week, hasn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The umpire has actually recorded it at as a goal because one of the North Melbourne defenders had actually clearly touched that.
SPEAKER_02Touched it with his finger.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, with his finger.
SPEAKER_02So the video man got it wrong, and then they also got that one wrong in the Eagle St. Kilda game.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Rowan Marshall marked the ball over the line, then a minute later they went back and said, Oh, it's your mark, and then he kicked a goal.

SPEAKER_02Maybe that was the turning point in the game.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. 44 casts where we look up at the games ahead.
SPEAKER_02First game up is Collingwood versus Hawthorne. Can the Pyars get over the third place Hawks? The Hawks have been in really good form the last few weeks, but Collingwood continue to look like the real deal. Even though they might be a bit older, they still continue to find ways to win.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Bulldogs versus Frio. Can the injured Bulldogs take a win after the 66-point defeat against the Bulldogs? Against the Swans.
SPEAKER_02Maybe. They've got a lot of injuries. Hard work when you've got a lot of injuries in your team.
SPEAKER_01Dockers really should take this one.
SPEAKER_02They should win. They don't win often in Melbourne, but they should be able to get the Chuckeys here.
SPEAKER_01But it is the most but it's not the most exciting game in a round.
SPEAKER_02It may not be, but you never know. Bulldogs might pull a rabbit out of the hat.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then we've got the Derby, Adelaide versus Port Adelaide. The showdown, I think they call it in Adelaide. Both teams coming in in mixed form. Port Adelaide probably playing better form, arguably, going into this. So I don't know, it's got to be a good game. I think this might be one of the games of the round on Friday night.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then we've got Essendon versus Brisbane. Oscar Allen out for four months with a broken foot. Brisbane played well against Adelaide, but bombers. They weren't great against Collingwood. Can they find a bit more form? Because their form is not that great again. They're under a bit of pressure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Next game is West Coast from Richmond. Battle of the rebuild. So uh both teams need to get on the winners' list. Can Tom Lynch kick a bag of goals?
SPEAKER_02Well, Eagles are a bit weak in the back line. So this is where they might have the advantage, Richmond.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but Eagles do have a strong midfield, and the midfields can actually get that run to go forward.
SPEAKER_02If they stop the ball going forward, then the backs don't have to do as much work.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So let's hope the midfield can get on top of the Richmond midfield.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And now we look at Geelong versus North Melbourne. Geelong will come in favourites playing at G A GM HBA Stadium. Geelong have a few injuries and the back line was exposed last week against Port. North played well against GWS, but they just couldn't get the win. So I don't know. I think Geelong probably go in hot favourites, but North need to start beating a team in the top eight if they want to start looking to make finals.
SPEAKER_01Carlton versus Saints. Carlton play okay against the Dockers. This is a must-win game for them now. No more close losses. Saints aren't big against the Eagles, but now have a few injuries. Liam Ryan also being one. He kicked a few goals last year.
SPEAKER_02I think he kicked four against the Eagles.
SPEAKER_01And I think he could have played better, definitely.
SPEAKER_02But Carlton now, they started the season good first half, bad second half.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Now they've played games where they've just lost. They gotta get a win.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And this is one they may be able to win.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Maybe. Then we've got Sydney versus Melbourne. Well the Swans are on fire, but Melbourne are also playing some really exciting football. So this is a game where if Melbourne want to be the real deal, they're going to push the Swans right to the end. But it is in Sydney, small grand SEG. Sydney probably slightly the favourites.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely. Next game is Gold Coast GWS. Suns are struggling to beat teams in the top ten. GWS gotta win against North, but still aren't playing convincing footy. This is a this is this game is important for Gold Coast to pull away from the bottom eight and for GWS to stay in touch with the final eight.
SPEAKER_02This is the type of game where both seasons could be decided a little bit. If you're trying to chase the top eight for the rest of the year, it might make it hard for GWS.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Alright, Max, let's do some tips. Collingwood vs. Hawthorne.
SPEAKER_01I'm so hang on, hang on.
SPEAKER_02Collingwood versus Hawthorne. I think you can only pick one team here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm sorry, Isaac. I'm gonna go Hawks.
SPEAKER_02I'm sorry, Isaac. I'm gonna go Hawthorne too. Bulldog versus Freo.
SPEAKER_01I have to go Freo.
SPEAKER_02I'll go Freo as well. Adelaide versus Port Adelaide.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go. I think I thought I was gonna do this and then I changed my mind, but then I've turned back to Adelaide.
SPEAKER_02I wanna go Port Adelaide. Essential versus Brisbane. Surely Brisbane better than that. I think Brisbane wins that West Coast versus Richmond. We know the stat.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we know the stat. And I do think West Coast are a better team than Richmond, definitely.
SPEAKER_02And I want to win the game for your auntie's sake on her birthday.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Fingers crossed, I'll pick West Coast as well.
