Songs of FM
Songs Of FM is a music-first podcast fueled by friendship, nostalgia, and the era when FM radio actually meant something.
Hosted by lifelong friends — including members of the band The Sons — we dive deep into the music that shaped us, especially the glory days of 80s and 90s rock, alternative, pop, and everything in between.
But it doesn’t stop at the songs.
We spiral into 90s movies, random pop culture, and whatever else somehow makes its way into the room.
It’s part music history, part hot takes, part inside-joke energy — like hanging out after rehearsal when nobody wants to leave.
The focus is music.
The conversation? Anything’s fair game.
New episodes regularly.

You all ready to win?
SPEAKER_05Uh, here we are again, S1E10 of the Songs of FM podcast. How's everybody doing? How are you guys? Good, doing good. Good, good. All right. Well, uh, we well, this is number 10, if you can believe it. Uh, we've got a special guest lined up for you here in just a few, but uh right now we're gonna throw to Ryan and he's gonna write some wrongs. How about it, Ryan?
SPEAKER_03All right, Chris at the music. I've right on it today. He was the first one wrong I'd like to write is that no fault of our own. It's how wronged we were by AEP and the power outage Wren suffered that delayed the start of the last episode.
SPEAKER_00Amen.
SPEAKER_03Segment one, Chris stated that music is dead. We found that that that statement's false. As explained so well by Ren. Uh, this moment's less about Chris being wrong and how how much Wren was right. And he gave the best explanation of the current state of music, and I think we just need to take this moment to acknowledge that.
SPEAKER_05Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_03All right, moment acknowledged. Segment three, Bon Jovi versus Motley Crue. Chris claimed Vince Neil can never sing even during his heyday. Uh, research shows that is somewhat true. He was never one of the best singers, uh, but he worked uh for the band and it was still badass. So uh I'll I'll now cite my reference material of Vince Neil uh singers then and now on YouTube channel. Ken, is it Tamplin?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. If you're using Kenny Tamplin as a as a uh as a source, I'm gonna have to question that. That's gonna have to be uh definitely investigated.
SPEAKER_03Well, let me give you the quote that's gonna convince you. Ken Tamplin did say he's obviously out of shape and loves barbecue.
SPEAKER_08Okay.
SPEAKER_05Well, I mean, what's that supposed to mean? That's more of a visual thing than uh you know an audio thing.
SPEAKER_00I think more about it today. I take offense to that.
SPEAKER_03Well, he did comment a couple times. If Vince Neil was ever serious about his career, he would lose weight, get in shape so he could perform to his capabilities.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03So Kim Campbell, not real happy with uh Vince Neil.
SPEAKER_05I think that might be the first time I have ever agreed with Ken Tamplin.
SPEAKER_03I knew you would that's that's why I threw it in here because I knew you would doubt it at first. But that is uh Riding Ryan's wrongs for episode 10. Except for I guess we do need to acknowledge, because Chris brought it up, that uh the honorable R. Francis Dodo, uh, in his case numbers, he often said EP eight. Uh it was actually EP9. Yeah. He kind of forgot where he was at, lost an episode 10.
SPEAKER_05Well, he didn't seem to be all there anyway.
SPEAKER_03So he was a little out there. Now, a lot of you don't know that he's actually he has a different name because he he goes by his dad's name as uh Dell Del Del. Del Dad.
SPEAKER_05All right, the wrongs have been righted. Ryan has done his civic duty for the day. Uh Ren, uh I guess it's time uh we need a tenth uh uh sponsor for the show. Uh what have you got?
SPEAKER_04Well, and now word from our totally hypothetical sponsor, AOL, America Online. The place where you could connect to the internet eventually. You logged in, you waited for that magical ding and for a brief for a few brief seconds. The world was yours. Then the connection dropped. Then the modem screeched. And somehow you learn patience. Chat rooms, instant messages, and email you never checked. It was all there. It's gone now, of course, but somewhere a dial-up tone is still softly judging you.
SPEAKER_03AOL. You've got me. Yeah, the kids of the TikTok generation could not do dial up internet. There's no six different things while and forget that they even logged on.
SPEAKER_05Kids have lost any any inkling of patience these days. Get bored really easy. Yeah, we were all in the in the form of mom, get off the phone.
SPEAKER_07I'm trying to talk. I'm on the internet.
SPEAKER_05As soon as the dial-up went through and it connected, you got uh oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh. You've got Mel. All your ICQ messages come through. All right, so we're expecting a check from AOL now. Uh well, I guess it's time to bring on our special guest, and this is a pretty special one for me. Uh, back like uh when we had Keith on, uh, he and I have been friends since uh since uh kindergarten. But uh this guy right here, I was friends with before kindergarten because his dad and my dad played in a band years ago, and I was raised right alongside him. I want you all to welcome one of my best friends in this world, Mr. Jammon Jamie Johnson. What's up, James?
SPEAKER_02Hey, it is a pleasure to be on the podcast and the show. I really enjoy it. Thank you.
SPEAKER_05Thank you very much. We we do, and I I knew you would you would be like the perfect guest because I know you're gonna have some very insightful stuff. Uh, and we're gonna play a couple games coming up, and you'll enjoy yourself that and you're gonna vote in Renstead on our Songs of FM Arena Rock Challenge coming up a little bit later. You're gonna help us get to the final four, I guess it would be. Uh, but uh right now we want to ask the the questions that we ask every guest that we have on. Uh, in your case, how did you get started in radio?
SPEAKER_02How did I get started in radio? Um, probably when I was six years old. Yeah, wanting to do radio. And uh uh taking uh, you know, we used to have these things called cassettes and uh boom boxes, and I would record commercials on cassettes. I would record music off the radio, and I had my own set of cassettes, and I would take a set of w walkie-talkies. I had a set of transformer walkie-talkies. So I would take black tape and go around one of them where it keeps the mic held in all the time. Yeah. Put the other one outside so that if you walked by the house where I lived, which was up the street from Russ, you had to hear me broadcasting out into the street. I did that a few times. They're pretty resourceful with duct tape.
SPEAKER_05I remember the dual deck cassette boom box you had with a built-in mic. And like you said, we would record our our uh commercials with background music, and we had our fake radio station WKNG, The King.
SPEAKER_02The King 106.1. I went on to work for a 106.1 later on in life. It's kind of weird. But uh and we'd we'd broadcast Reds games too. We made them up off the uh internet. Uh the um uh the Nintendo Nintendo, yeah. We would play Nintendo and record games like that and such. But I mean, I was just I just kind of geeked out doing that stuff when I was a kid and uh and everything else. And and then when I finally did get an actual pain radio gig, someone that I worked with had one of these uh little mini transformers or transmitters, yeah, and it would reach out for a mile radius. So we set that up in 1998, I want to say, and you could actually hear it in a car on 90.3 uh throughout Wheel Right. You could actually, if somebody knew it was nobody knew it was there, right? But if you actually stumbled upon it, you could actually hear us broadcasting out of my house.
SPEAKER_05So we hope no one comes at us because we were involved in a little bit of pirate radio, yeah. Pirate radio. But it was it was a whole lot of fun.
SPEAKER_02Uh how many years have you have you had now? Um, I'm officially at 29 going on 30.
SPEAKER_05Almost 30 years in the radio business. I worked alongside him for a little while at W uh WMDJ in Martin, and I know Doe did for a uh maybe a month or two.
SPEAKER_02I think he got two paychecks.
SPEAKER_03I don't think I ever got a paycheck. So if there's two out there, if you want to mail them to me, that'd be great.
SPEAKER_02Uh they've done kept them, trust me.
SPEAKER_05Uh what's going on in the Jamie Jamie world these days?
SPEAKER_02Well, um I recently made a change to another place. I don't, I don't like, I don't really jump places, you know. I usually work places 10 years plus, yeah. Um and and things, but here lately things have been kind of in flux for me. And uh now I'm at uh Painksville and working at uh get my cup here, uh 989 WSIP as the uh new general manager there. So um uh been excited about that, been there for a little while now, and uh that also goes with 94.7 WKOW 99.3 WKYH. That's the three stations in Paintsville. There's also an AM 1490 WSIP, which plays classic country, it's mostly 80s and 70s and 80s country. Yeah, and then also I've been helping with the Whitesburg market on 103.9, the Bulldog, and 95.1 WTCW. So six stations that raise my count up to 19 different stations I've been affiliated with in nearly 30.
SPEAKER_0519 stations in 29 plus years. That's pretty cool. Now now we're gonna go a little bit deeper. I'm gonna make you think a little bit. Uh to your recollection, and you know, we're on the spot here, but what what is uh like one of your favorite moments you've had on the radio? And what is a song? There has to be a song that stands out at maybe some pinnacle of your career or a low point in your career, whatever, a song that comes to mind when you equate it to your your work as a on-air personality andor salesperson, general manager, whatever.
SPEAKER_02Well, I would tell you that I can remember the first song I ever played on the radio. So I'd I'd sit down, it was a Saturday evening, and they're gonna train you. So your training is you sit down behind the board and you start going. This is 1997. And uh James, you were three, huh? Yeah, I was James. Yeah, James was probably three years old.
SPEAKER_05That's that's he literally was three years old.
SPEAKER_02Three years old, yeah. So um, but I'm there and I'm training, and I sit behind the board, and finally the guy who was teaching me, his name was Robert, he said, Um, go ahead and pick a song to play. I was like, Oh, I gotta pick a song, you know. Yeah, so I grabbed a CD because it was they were playing CDs and records. So I picked a CD and I thought, Oh hell, I love Vince Gill. So I popped in Vince Gill, and it was a song called A Little More Love. First song I played. I and I was right on it. You know, you hit a you take jingles on carts and you put the cart into a machine, yeah, and you would hear the the jingle of the radio station, and then bam, you hit this hand, you hit the CD player over here. Song starts. I'm feeling pretty good about myself. Guy walks back in there and he says, You know, he just played a song that wasn't approved. And I went, he said, Do you see the CDs have check marks on them? And I said, Oh, so like there was a CD, and this may have had 12 songs on it. It's like a sampler disc you get every two weeks or so of all the current songs that are out there. That was not an approved song, and I'm like, Well, they're they're wrong. It didn't say you couldn't play it, yeah. And that's how I got my start in radio that's actually kind of apropos for how my career has been because I just kind of did it my way a little bit. Yeah, kind of went against the grain a little bit, you know. Yeah, it's kind of been that way all my all my career.
SPEAKER_05So do you have a favorite? Was that is that like your favorite moment and song all round?
SPEAKER_02I don't know if it's a favorite moment, it was just something I remember with a song in particular. Do you have a favorite moment? I do remember one time where a a station owner uh had gotten the um Shania Twain CD. Um what's the what's the I don't have it in front of me to look at the discography, but not the one that had uh any man of mine, but the next one, the one that when she blew up on. Um that was on it. Let's go, girl. That don't impress me much, yeah. All those songs were on it. I'm sitting there, and uh the owner went back to listen to the songs on the disc, and he came back through there and took that disc and went wham, threw it in the trash. I'll play that stuff here. And uh we did it, we ended up playing it anyway. But I thought it was kind of funny that it was just because it was so poppy. Yeah. Um that area, you know. And that was uh I've seen a lot of I've seen a lot of things in radio. If you can if you could imagine that this probably happened, I mean, people who call and it's all but it's all been mostly good. Um people that call, I love interacting with callers, I I love seeing people out. I enjoy people who listen and want to know something you've said, you know, or things like that. Uh, but it's been a it's been a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_05Um, okay, so this is just uh if this wasn't in the questions to ask, but I'm gonna ask it anyways. How many, uh an estimate, I'm sure, how many birthday cakes from Dairy Queen have you given away?
SPEAKER_02A ton. Um take um if there's 52 weeks of a year, uh, there's 52 cakes. So I would say um take it, give or take a week or two off. You could probably easily take 48 times that by times that by 12. Wow.
SPEAKER_05So five hundred plus cakes you've given. Well, 52 weeks, five days.
SPEAKER_02Wait, wait, wait, wait a minute. No, no, no, no. 52 weeks times that by five days.
SPEAKER_05So you did, yeah, because you've done it every day.
SPEAKER_02260 days times that by 12 years. Is it we I didn't do it all 18 years I was at MDJ? That can't be right. No, it would be.
SPEAKER_03It was every day. 3,120. That's probably about right.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_03Has anybody here ever gotten a cake from them?
SPEAKER_00I have. Nope.
SPEAKER_05Did you get one? Yes, I got one with you. And I don't think that I don't think that had any, you know, I didn't have any inside information. You know, I wasn't a Martha Stewart of the Derrick Queen World.
SPEAKER_03Now we see what how how it works.
SPEAKER_02But really, how it worked was if you weren't a kid, you couldn't win. Yeah, so that was the really that was the big secret behind it.
SPEAKER_05When I say I won, Layla won. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Somehow Layla's Layla won. Wow, how did Layla win? Yeah. I mean, because what you did, you had a box, you had the birthdays in a box, and you you go through it, but you go ahead and throw out everybody who wasn't a kid, so or an anniversary. But since it was really a birthday cake, I never would give away an anniversary, yeah, unless it was just a have to thing. No, gotcha. And so uh we always gave it to a kid. So a kid would and that sometimes you'd have somebody come in and they say, Man, I don't know how she wins this every year. And I'm thinking, You're the only kid listening every time we get this going on, you know. You just keep hanging in there, mate. So you're about 16. She's good.
SPEAKER_00James, did you ever win one? I did not. There was one time, so I I worked at MDJ too, and I'd filled in uh for that shift that gives away the birthday cake. It was my first time ever doing that shift. I did not know of that rule. So I gave the birthday cake away to someone who was like 43. You got the phone call. I got a phone call. Yeah, you did.
SPEAKER_02You got a phone call. Now, James.
SPEAKER_05It's gotta be uh Ryan, did you ever have the pleasure of getting away a cake? I did not. You always did the late shift in the Reds game zone from the West Coast.
SPEAKER_02And so you were there like he didn't elevate enough to a weekday. I don't think I don't think Rusty, you never did a weekday, I don't think.
SPEAKER_05Uh I've done one, it was always nights, yeah. I always done the nights. And I always hated when the Reds played on the West Coast because the game would start at like 9 or 9:30, and I'd be there. It's overtime, baby. Yeah. No, that didn't exist. Uh now I've got a note here that said Ryan wants to ask a question. Or is that the question you want to ask at the end of the show?
SPEAKER_03Uh, we can do it either, we can do it at the end of the show if we want. But I do want to do that.
SPEAKER_00I got one now, if you don't mind. Go right ahead. So, what'd you say? 29 years or 30 years in radio? I'm 29 going on 30. Has the dreams of dead air ever gone away for you?
SPEAKER_02No. And and it's funny because now I have them at different places. So some nights, some nights I'm at I'm at WMDJ in like the old building that was down at Allen. Sometimes I'm at Martin. Sometimes I'm at uh the former East Kentucky broadcasting and Pike Bull, and something messes up. Uh mostly though, it was most of my nightmares like that. Those are those dead air nightmares or MDJ because everything you do there was live. So uh it was you had it was all dependent on you seeing that are doing stuff. Yeah, that's a curse. Most places aren't there. Yeah, right radio is I equate radio to Hotel California. You know, there's a line in Hotel California. You can check in anytime you like, but you can never leave. Yeah, okay. And you will it's it's it's it's true. Well, a lot of people who get out of it still have an itch wishing they could do it at some in some capacity.
SPEAKER_05That that nightmare scenario that you're you're talking about actually almost happened to me, but it ended up being a prank by one Bill Bull Marshall. Yes, that I put on one of those long songs when you needed to go use the restroom. And I go in and use the restroom, I come back into the control room and the door's locked. And I thought I had because I was there by myself at night.
SPEAKER_00Is this real or a dream? Real. This is real.
SPEAKER_05This was real and the door was locked, and I started panicking because the song was about to end, and I was completely prepared to bust the door down when out from behind the console jumps Bill. Oh, don't do it, don't do it, don't do it. He's just pulling a prank on me, you know.
SPEAKER_02Russ is big boy, he's gonna burrow that door down. Yeah, that door was gone.
SPEAKER_05That door was gone.
SPEAKER_02And he's talking about bathroom songs. We we literally had a we had records, we're still using records. Riders on the storm, and we had long 45s that were long in time, they were hung on a nail under the console because those were the bathroom songs. Yeah, so if you got to go put one of those on, yeah. And you and you would know if you were listening, well, somebody's listening. Hey Jude's on. Well, somebody's used, you know.
SPEAKER_03This is a third one in 15 minutes. What did he have for dinner?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, riders on the storm, and yeah, or you're out back smoking, you know. It was one of the two. If you if if it was a bad particularly bad night, then you were gonna play Anagata Davida. So you had about 18 minutes to do your thing there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, or uh American Pie, which you had to play American Pie on a 45, it's divided in half. So, and I did that one time. I played side A, stopped, flipped it, played the other side to hear, and it's going you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Those are little some tricks from doing live radio nowadays. It's all scheduled, you know, and uh kind of you just do it ahead of time and load it in the system.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, I I recently was actually at a uh with a radio company, um CMH23, where I could do my entire radio show from this where I'm sitting at right here at my kitchen table at my house. And I can record it all.
SPEAKER_05So did you uh curious curiosity here? If you like when you've done that, you just drop it on a thumb drive or uh some kind of SD card or something, they'll take it.
SPEAKER_02It's a cloud-based system. So the the scheduler comes up, it shows you what songs are in there and where the ads are gonna plug, and they're just places you can talk or you can add places to talk. Oh, so that kind of kind of just does it for you. Yeah, so well, I didn't like any of the songs, so I would change them all. Okay, yeah. Well, I mean, I mean I that's the beauty of radio.
SPEAKER_05That was my favorite part, is that I was gonna take you on my musical journey, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's it's not that I didn't like the songs, I just didn't like that the computer generically throws them in there, yeah, with no rhyme or reason, so it would just shift to this, to this, to this all the time. I think it has to be a kind of a flow. There's an art and keep you engaged. It's just like listening to an album, which you know, kids don't understand that because they download songs. Yeah, you could put an album in and hit there's a reason why track one is number one and number two and number three. Yeah, you guys know that. Yeah, and that's how you approach radio, it's the same way. So you take people on this journey with you through songs, and you talk about one or the other, and you play certain certain Songs certain places you can say something about them. Um, things like I would make sure I had a place to talk about a new song because I want to make sure you knew who this person was and who what the song is. And then I may play a song another time where you wouldn't talk in between, but you should know it was Garth Brooks Rodeo. Yeah, you should know that song. So there's a there's a rhyme and reason to it, and I won't bore you for programming, but you know, you should hear the same pattern every 15 minutes on if a radio station is really good at what it does, you should be able to hear music, somebody's voice, some information, and commercials all in a 15-minute span.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's definitely an art form.
SPEAKER_03We're kind of staying on the programming side of it. Do you is there any, I guess, feedback or push from record companies or certain to play certain songs, or do you guys have pretty much just freedom to play whatever? Or you talk about that we have to do that.
SPEAKER_05You are yeah, are you asking about Payola?
SPEAKER_02Payola is illegal. Uh in case you didn't know, uh, ask the man who invented the phrase rock and roll. Uh that was that's where Payola got started at in the 50s. But anyway, if you are a reporting station to a chart, you will have radio record reps call you. So we actually have that at WSIP. Adam Priest, who works with me, is the is a fantastic program director. He is the best PD I've ever met in this business. He's a safon at it, and he has record reps every Tuesday. Wear him out to play this song, that song. And mostly it's artists maybe you haven't heard, yeah, because it's independent stuff. But we report to Music Row Nashville chart. Okay, and that is a chart that does play, it does show that there's songs like Ella Langley or whoever's hot right now nationwide, but also there's some independent artists on there, and you'll get those independent record label reps call you, and then also you'll have national reps call you and want you to play songs and things. I can remember being at uh WDHR and Dirk Bentley called the radio station one time and wanted to talk to Randy Jones because he knew Randy Jones from uh yeah, he's I love Randy, he was a great guy, and um but he had met him at CRS, that's country radio seminar. It's in Nashville every year, and it's a three-day event, four-day event that you can attend as a this jockey or if you're in the radio business. And they admit there. And a lot of times you meet these artists before they get famous, yeah. And if they break, sometimes they remember you. And he was one of them. I remember him calling one time, which is kind of crazy.
SPEAKER_05Well, that's that's a cool little insight into who Jamie is and a little more insight on in into the radio business. Thank you, Jamie, for that. Uh, we're now going to turn it over to uh to our segment two guru, uh Mr. Ryan Mitchell. We got there, Ryan, for segment number two.
SPEAKER_03So in 1939, the first NCAA tournament was held, consisting of eight teams. 44 years later, and 43 years ago on March 2nd, 1983, the first CD was born. Some will say the 44-year age difference is too great, but here at Songs of FM, age is just a number. And today we're gathered in the presence of each other to witness the joining of the NCAA tournament and the compact disc. AI has taken down all streaming services with the help of AEP, who excels in the outage department. And but A D R E C Z.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03MTV has vanished faster than Rims Electric when it rains. And you're on an island, Wilson is napping, and you only have four CDs to pick from. We'll call this segment the final four.
SPEAKER_05All right. So four.
SPEAKER_03We had some clarification in our chat. You can't take uh, I don't know, the Garth Brooks box set and say that's one CD. Okay. You have four. So if it's a multiple disc uh set, you can take you can take three if it's a three-disc set, and that's three of your four.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03So we'll we'll let Jamie think about it a little bit since we don't give them any uh any leads coming into this, and we'll start with Ren.
SPEAKER_04Perfect. Perfect. My four CDs are in no particular order. Before these crowded streets, Dave Matthews band. I think that's one of the only albums that actually won a Grammy. You can check that, Ryan. Um front to end. Great. You know, younger me would prefer the Under the Table in Dreaming that had Ants Marching on it. Uh-huh. That's usually a younger person style, but as you grow older and mature, Before These Crowded Streets is the perfect album in Dave Matthews Land. What's a couple songs we might know from that album? Uh you've got Don't Drink the Water, uh Pig Pig. You've got uh Crush. I think Crush is on that one.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's that's one of my favorites. I love Crush.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Uh another CD. Hmm. I'll have to go John Mayer, continuum. That's yeah. I figured. Let's uh change gears a bit. I mean, I can't go without my hot apple pie CD.
SPEAKER_05That's that's Rin was such a big fan that we saw we saw them at the chicken festival years ago.
SPEAKER_02And that was the country band hot apple pie and Brady Seals and that group.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. And that was uh uh it was a really good uh Apple Pie uh uh AEP's got Rennie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Uh oh I'm we don't know if it's a CIA or if it's AEP. We don't know who's gosh.
SPEAKER_05But that that was a concert we went to at the chicken festival, and then and it was really because Rim was such a big fan of them, but man, they put on a hell of a show. It was a good album.
SPEAKER_03So it was Brady Seals. Where was he uh Little Texas? Little Texas. Was this prior to Little Texas or after?
SPEAKER_02After he sang the lead on My Love by Little Texas. That's him saying that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so he does uh some some uh writer roundtables in Richmond at a winery about once a month, if you want to catch Brady Seals now.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. All right, what's number three, Rand?
SPEAKER_04Uh well that was number three, hot apple pie. And that that kind of gives me some country feel, you know. That is that because I mean that hits all the country angles on that CD.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh number four.
SPEAKER_03I carry boys to men.
SPEAKER_02By the way, you all have a really big time affinity for boys to men stuff. That's not all of us talking about that trans.
SPEAKER_05No, no, we it'd be it'd be the gentleman in the sunglasses.
SPEAKER_04Because at the end of the season, someone needs to compile the series of events or the times I always I've mentioned Maracarian Boys to Men. I think that would tie in really good together as a little montage. Okay, great.
SPEAKER_00I can't count that high.
SPEAKER_04Okay, okay. What's number four? Do you remember the now CDs? Now, that's what I thought.
SPEAKER_05Now, volume 963.
SPEAKER_04Well, maybe four. One sweet day was only on one edition. In 2018, New Zealand compiled a now release. It's called Now, that's what I call nostalgia.
SPEAKER_05Now that's what I'll call nostalgia.
SPEAKER_04And that's what I put in it. Yeah. One sweet day by Meracerian Boys and Men appears on that one, but none of the other now's. So plus there's some other 90s and cool music on there for nostalgia purchases.
SPEAKER_05Are you saying that you you actually got a CD from New Zealand? If I wanted that, I mean I would have to. Oh, so you never owned it. That's just one that you would want to. I never owned it. Okay, okay, I got you there.
SPEAKER_04But I've owned the I've got the others.
SPEAKER_05Okay. All right, good deal. Ryan?
SPEAKER_03Chris, what would your funnel for be?
SPEAKER_06Well, I went with uh I just went with uh CDs I had I listened to when I was younger, like in high school a little bit after. Um I was the kid that went from metal to bluegrass. So I would have slipknots, slipknot. Self-titled. Yeah. Um Eagles Hotel California. Good one. Uh Newsboys. Take me to your leader.
SPEAKER_05You do like newsboys. I know that about you.
SPEAKER_06And uh Under Oath, they're only chasing safety. Under Oath of this.
SPEAKER_00Great album. I didn't expect you as an Underoath fan. I don't even know if I know who Underoath is.
SPEAKER_06They used to be, they're no longer a Christian a Christian metal band.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Hardcore, some would say.
SPEAKER_05Chris, Chris's got a pretty thick uh Christian uh music background, whether it be in the pop or rock or metal genre, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Did you ever go to Ethus, Chris? No. Oh man. I never got it.
SPEAKER_00I worked it. I did uh I worked it. Did you really? Yeah. It was I always wanted to I always did uh what's it called? Like the pre-show setup, like on Mondays and Tuesdays. It was awesome.
SPEAKER_05Is that the one they have in Lexington? Uh Wilbore.
SPEAKER_02That's uh Asbury College.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, that's not far for me at all.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was that was good times in the 90s. Uh if you were into Christian music, you probably went to Icthus at least once or three times in your life.
SPEAKER_06No, I never got to I got to go to uh what's the one they have here? Uh was it July Jam?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. They used to have one here in Pike in the area. But uh one time I went, we got to interview some artists, and this is when I was of WWJD, the Alice Boy College radio station. And uh I met six pince none of the richer.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, that's cool. Wow. Because they were a Christian band before they had Kiss Me.
SPEAKER_05That's how good Jamie is. They name a radio station after him. What would Jamie do? Oh god. No, no. All right, Ryan, you won't make it.
SPEAKER_03All right, Russ, what's your as uh as always?
SPEAKER_05I've uh battled this question for a few days now. Uh, I thought about one of my favorite country albums that's way uh under the radar of uh uh Living in a Moment by Ty Herndon. I love that album from start to finish. Um uh, of course, like Cracked Rearview and the 90s Staples album, stuff like that. But for me, I would have to, the four I would have to take with me uh on an island would be John Mayer Continuum. I love that album. That reminds me of when Megan and I were dating. She lived in Richmond going to EKU, and that's when that album came out. And it's a two-hour, two and a half hour trip from here to there, and I just let it repeat. Every single song on that album is stellar. It's a great, yeah, great, great album. Um, I would I would definitely have to take Boston, Boston. That is way up there in my list, more than feeling being my favorite song of all time. But I mean, it's it's got every song, it's only eight songs on it, but every one of them is uh, as the kids call it today, the other a banger. Um my favorite, one of my favorite albums of all time from one of my favorite artists of all time, Elton John, Madman Across the Water. I love that album. If you ever get a chance to listen to you doing a little work around the house, doing a little office work or whatever, pop that album on, just hit start and let it flow for you because it's it's one of those, like Jamie was talking about. There's reasons that songs are in order that they are on albums. And that one is flawless. And you get the chance to listen to the song Indian Sunset, cold chills, I'm gonna say. Uh, and the last one would be one that I compiled myself after I found a cassette that was converted from a real to real from the band that Jamie and Jamie's dad and my dad were in back in the back in the 70s. The name of the band was Blue Dustin Us. And I guess it would be self-titled Blue Dustin Us. They're doing a bunch of cover songs, but I had a uh um a project when I first started college that I converted that cassette to to C D. And I I burned it up. I mean, I just let it flow. I could, you know, one of them I could listen to from start to finish. I'd definitely have to have my dad's Blue Dustin Us band that C D with me because that would definitely give me a lot of a lot of comfort. But those are my four.
SPEAKER_03All right, James, what's your final four?
SPEAKER_00I'm ready for it.
SPEAKER_03We're gonna have some green day.
SPEAKER_00We'll see.
SPEAKER_05Uh we'll see.
SPEAKER_00We'll see. We'll see. Do I get bonus points if I see actually getting them?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05The youngest guy on the panel has CDs. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Listen, my first car was a 91 GMC Sonoma. That's all I didn't have.
SPEAKER_04Were you in the car seat?
SPEAKER_06Back seat, car seat trapped in.
SPEAKER_00Buddy, I was behind that six-liter 4.3 Vortex. All right. Then the second car was an O2 Honda Civic, which did have a CD player. So I I bought a lot of CDs when I got that O2 CD. Okay. Uh, first one more than you think you are. Smatchbox 20. That's a good one. And like this one, obviously, it didn't get as much hit as Mad Season and the other albums, but I don't know. Something about this one, just the order, the songs, and it it is a little more polished than the earlier stuff.
SPEAKER_05So name one one big song off that people would know.
SPEAKER_00Uh Bright Lights, Unwell with the signature. Unwell, yeah. Yeah, okay. Uh my second one. This is a this is a weird one, uh, but I love it. So not too this was I forgot what year. But there was a summer tour with Styx, Foreigner, and Don Felder. And to promote that tour, they re-recorded a bunch of their big songs. All three artists did.
SPEAKER_05That that explains something to me.
SPEAKER_00Well, the best part that I was excited about with this is that Todd Zuckerman, the drummer of Sticks, was actually finally featured on these songs on an album because he joined the band later. He didn't record any of the albums.
SPEAKER_08Right.
SPEAKER_00So I got to get this, listen to Todd Suckerman add his flavor, and now it's it's so good.
SPEAKER_05See, that what I'm saying that explains is that James put together, again, you know, we're in the band The Sons together. Uh, he he compiled the the the playlist of songs that we are thinking about learning and stuff like that. But every foreigner song was a re-recording. It wasn't the original. And it, but it was so that explains it just from that album. Okay.
SPEAKER_02He was influenced more by that than the original.
SPEAKER_05Yep. Yep.
SPEAKER_00That's cool. I don't I I'm not I like New Age. I like the clarity of new recordings. Okay. Uh the third one I don't have a CD for, but I've got the artist. Uh the E this is the Eagles Farewell One Tour DVD. Okay. But I'm using this in place of their greatest hits album. The one that has hit the all-time best-selling album of all time.
SPEAKER_05Four times, four times Diamond.
SPEAKER_00So if this was a CD, I would have chosen it because hearing them live is just it's a whole different experience. Plus, you got Joe Walsh's stuff on here. You got Felder stuff on here, Henley's single stuff. Yep, yep. If this was a CD, this would have beat it for me. Gotcha. And then number four. Last but not least, is Molly. How did this get in there? Molly. Molly Cruz greatest hits. The band that beat Bon Jovi in our tournament bracket. Man, just remember have a drink.
SPEAKER_03A million of the company.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if you lost all that, but those pieces went everywhere. And I'm sitting here thinking, I gotta toddler and I gotta find all these the things we do for this show. Literally. But number four, Green Days Bullet in the Bible live concert from 2005 in uh England.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. So is so is that one like uh one of those that only fans would like only real Green Day fans would uh go with?
SPEAKER_00Well, this was their first live DVD, and they also released it as a live album.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_00Uh so and the name's called Bullet in the Bible because they actually went to they were in the UK, they went to a World War II museum, and there was a Bible there that saved a soldier's life. And they ended up storing it in the museum because I think somewhere in songs, I can't remember. Brian's gonna write me wrong on this. Uh the bullet stopped. The guy had the soldier had a Bible on him and it stopped a bullet from hitting. So that's why they named a bullet in the Bible. But it's it's mainly it's got the big songs from the American Idie album because that was the tour, but they also got classics from Dookie, uh Sun from Warning, and other albums.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I love this album.
SPEAKER_01Great. That's my four. Good picks.
SPEAKER_03All right, Jamie. Are you ready?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm ready. Uh it's kind of weird because I don't want to steal the John Mayer Thunder because I could take a John Mayer album too. No, we can. I know, but everybody's already took it. It's your four, man. But I've had a chance to send list everybody else's, so I don't want to repeat somebody. I actually like 40 star.
SPEAKER_00I gotta go pick up pieces. Go ahead. I I gotta go pick up these pieces. They're killing me. Picking pieces, though.
SPEAKER_02I actually do like the Sobrock uh record that John Mayer put out a few years ago. That was good. I wouldn't take it with me, but but now John Mayer's my favorite artist, and uh continuing his great record too. Um always kind of enjoyed his put just taking stuff of his and just taking it and listening to it. Uh Battle of Studies is a good record too. Yeah. Uh by him that I liked a lot. But now and then I had the same thing with Boston that Russ has, and almost had when we almost had the exact same story as to how we got exposed to it because it was my father bought it for me in a Target, which um Rusty could tell you about a story about Target. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Uh a mutual friend of ours thought it was a big hunting store.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you you know Andre Fang, don't you, Ryan?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I played.
SPEAKER_05When I lived in Louisville. When I lived in Louisville, he came to visit us, and we were going down Dixie Highway, and there's Target to our left with the big bullseye emblem in the word Target. He said, Oh my god, that's the biggest hunting store I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_02It's not a hunting store, but I remember beginning a Target in Columbus, and that was like picking picking the albums and CDs out for me, and he picked out a Chicago Live. Uh, it was just uh I've never I've never seen it again. Really? I still have it, but it was a it was just a live record of Chicago, and it was Boston's debut. Listen to these, you'll like them. You know, so I was like, oh yeah, I I did a lot, but I'll go different. I'll go, I'm gonna go all live records on you, okay? Because I actually really enjoy live albums. Um, number one, I'm gonna pick the um the Blues Brothers had a live album called Briefcase Full of Blues.
SPEAKER_05For those of you that don't know, he's a huge Blues Brothers fan.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. So I would pick that because I used to wear the cassette out and scoured the country looking for that CD. Everywhere we'd ever go on trip, uh, wherever I would go, I would go to find the record store somewhere nearby, and I would look for that album. And I eventually did find it at some point. Yeah, used never used to, it was a big deal to try to find a CD. Uh something's good area. No, it's just now they just pull it up on a phone, it's there. You know, I mean, used to, it was so gratifying to finally find that record you've been looking for, like uh going to the Gatlinburg place. There, uh, there's a and it's still there in that little mall over there. Yeah, in the mountain mall, mini mountain mall, whatever it's called. Yeah, uh, that was so cool. I look forward to going to that every year. Yeah, I can still smell the incense. Yeah, you know. Um, but I I like that one. I like um you mentioned the Eagles, how about Hellfreeze is over?
SPEAKER_03Great. Uh that was a great live album.
SPEAKER_02I I love how that came back. Uh how they came back together and everything. Thank God they came back together. They got for Travis Trick because he brought them back together. Yeah, that's true. Um, from the true story, from that common thread album. Yeah, if that hadn't happened, we would never had everything we've had the last 20 plus years.
SPEAKER_05And when they said thank you, Travis, he said.
SPEAKER_02Um, let's see. I'm also gonna go with a a Christian record like Chris, uh, by Michael W. Smith. He had a live in concert album in the 80s that also my dad bought for me on cassette. I've never found it on CD, and you cannot listen to it on iTunes. So, but I have a cassette of it, I have found it on YouTube, but Nowhere else. Okay. So, but I I really loved the music that was on that.
SPEAKER_05Place in this world was a really good song I liked by him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And this was all before that.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_02This was nice.
SPEAKER_05See, he that was his crossover. That was a couple crossover songs, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he had some crossover songs. The first one he ever had was a song called Friends.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh Friends are Friends forever if the Lord is the Lord.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, didn't everybody do a little dance thing number to that? And yeah.
SPEAKER_02This is probably 84, 85, uh when that came out. And but this was before all the stuff you're mentioning in the early 90s. Okay. That he had. But he was a piano player for Amy Grant. Oh. And is from Canova, West Virginia, by the way. Really? Michael W. Smith's from Canova. Yes, he's from Canova and was was adopted by his mom and dad. And who knows what his life would have been if his mother and father hadn't adopted him. Think about that. Right. Yeah. He's a he's a really interesting person to read about, and he's still making great Christian music today. Um, and I like that record. And then I guess for a fourth live album here, since I've committed myself to lives, uh I had it on top of my head and I forgot it. Um I would probably pick um, nobody's mentioned any Seagers. So give me um give me Seager uh live bullet. That's a great one. Give me that one. I I just love live records, so I would pick some live records because I want to feel like I'm if I'm on an island and I'm by myself, I want to feel like there's other people with me so I can hear the crowd and kind of remember to go to a show. So that's kind of why I wanted to go with live records. That's cool, that's a good deal.
SPEAKER_03Well, I don't know. I feel like I I gravitate toward live records. I don't know, mainly because you end up with a better selection of songs in it. Because even if it's some new stuff, they'll work in some of their greatest hits. So it's almost like uh greatest hits type, right? But usually the arrangements are pretty cool because you don't get to hear that on the on the album, right?
SPEAKER_02Right, right. You'll hear a little different take on a song or a little extended solo or something, or they'll come in and say something different. Um, I got a I got a a piece of uh Dwight Yokelm and he's talking about Betsy Lane, Kentucky on a live cut. If you find the album Hibley Deluxe, yeah. Now there's a there's a premium version of that that came out a few years ago. And he does a cover of a song called My Bucket's Got a Hole in It. That's an Hank Williams Senior song. Okay. But he does a little speaking at the first and says he was he was born and raised on a hauler in Betsy Lane, Kentucky. And he talks about being there and hearing this woman down the hauler who would hear him singing on the porch and say, Play me an old Hank song. And he says, Well, for so and so, here's your old Hank tune. And he went into it. He recorded it at the Rock Seat in Los Angeles. Oh, that's cool. And it's and it's a young Dwight Yoakum. I wonder if they practiced. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Ain't gotten time for practice, Randy.
SPEAKER_03Ain't got no band. I'm sure most of y'all remember the 48 hours that was on in the late 80s. Remember Dwight Yochum made a short appearance in that and did uh rewriting route 23.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I thought you were talking about the 60 minutes.
SPEAKER_03No, no, was it 60 minutes or no? It was 48 hours. You can't cover Floyd County in 60 minutes.
SPEAKER_02Well, you can if you drive it.
SPEAKER_05You know, I can remember them coming and doing some footage, filming some footage of us playing basketball down there where I lived in Wheelwright. Yeah. They didn't use that, but did they use that in it?
SPEAKER_01No, you know what? That's when we had a brand new basketball goal.
SPEAKER_02We had a black top court.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We had a black top court, they're not going to show that on TV.
SPEAKER_03I thought it was because they couldn't let that footage get out because all the scouts would be in Wheeler trying to recruit you guys.
SPEAKER_06Your car wasn't on blocks.
SPEAKER_02No, no. No. They showed a part of We're out high school in a in a classroom that had an old coal stove in it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay. The reason they picked that room was because that was the sub's room. So if you were a substitute, you couldn't get in the door of the regular teacher you're subbing for because it was locked by that teacher. So you had to go to the substitute room, and that's where your class met. Okay. They didn't use that room for any other reason, but they filmed that class there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay. And they didn't tell everybody that we're tearing the school down and building a brand new one down the road. They didn't even tell you any of that. Right. That was going on at the time. It's just ridiculous.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I guess that leaves you, right? Yep, leaves me. I would uh I'm gonna start with a newer album. I I feel like I kind of lack some of the classic stuff because I I'm too ADD and I just move on too quickly. So uh most of my stuff is a little in the last, I guess, 20 years or so. That's not true because I'm older than that, right? So one of them's gonna be a little bit older. But the first one's Traveler, uh Chris Stapleton.
SPEAKER_05That's a good album. Good.
SPEAKER_03And uh it kind of led to a really cool moment with Justin Timberlake um on the CMAs.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. I thought you were talking about one you might have had with Justin yourself.
SPEAKER_03What was that?
SPEAKER_05I said I'm thinking you might have you know had a moment with Justin yourself.
SPEAKER_03We won't talk about that. We'll move on. Uh everyone knows uh all the popular songs, but that had uh Sometimes I Cry on It and his vocal performance on that's freaking incredible. And Russ, I don't know if you sing that or not, but if we do a karaoke thing in the future, I think I'm gonna uh recommend that.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and that also had JT Kierr from Elkhorn City, one of Ren's former uh junior operator bandmates. I didn't know until I started to look into it. He's credited with the bass work on that album.
SPEAKER_05Okay as it should be.
SPEAKER_03So second album is Nobody Has Mentioned Any Rap. And occasionally I'd like to listen to a little bit of rap. Me too. So it's gonna be Tupac, all eyes on me. It's one of those situations where it's multiple disc. We're gonna go with disc one.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03So it was released in '96. Uh there's a lot of nostalgia. Uh, me and my best friend at high school, Justin, we spent a lot of nights playing pool or riding between McDowell Worldwide, and this was the soundtrack to a lot of those good times.
SPEAKER_05Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03Uh, it had uh Only Guy Can Judge Me, I ain't mad at you. California Love to America's Most Wanted. So that was on disc one. And then this one I actually forgot about until our conversation about how do you handle a multi-disc set. And Ren said, if you know, if it was Dave Matthews live at Red Rocks, Red Rocks. Yeah, you know, you'd have to, and I thought, oh, I forgot about this. This is one of my favorite disc CDs ever, and I wore it out for a long time, and it's Dave Matthews live at Central Park.
SPEAKER_05That's my favorite. Warren Haynes, Warren Haynes, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, I like it so much. I I would take disc one, they opened with Don't Drink the Water, which Ren mentioned on his. And it like they came out, it they had some organ in it, and it was just kind of a build-up, and then all of a sudden they just broke into it and it just slapped the audience in the face. It was it was great. And it had crush, uh, when the world ends, so much to say. So I would take uh Dave Matthews Live at Central Park, disc one, and then my favorite of all of the CDs I could think of would be disc three. So I'm gonna take Lafour. I'm taking disc one and disc three. It had Warren Haynes, yeah. Uh they opened with that that disc as later in the show, yeah. Uh Cortez the Killer. Then they did a 16-minute jam of Jimmy thing. Yeah, which I I love that song, and then that version uh was incredible. And then What Would You Say? Uh Where You Going? 13 Minutes of All Along the Watchtower.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_03Uh What You Are, and then they closed when they did What You Are, he was like, All right, good night. And then they came back and they did stay to close out the show. Okay. So I don't, I I usually we all say I'm I love Motley Crue, but the Motley Crew thing is uh more of my cousin Stacy being influenced, and I always looked up to him. He was a little bit older than me, and it was when I was younger. The first music that I probably discovered on my own was Dave Matthews, and I had probably a 15-year infatuation with Dave Matthews, and that album was I mean, that just hey Ren is credited with my entire Dave Matthews involvement at all.
SPEAKER_05He he started it all for me, and with I think it was with that album in particular that that uh Central Park concert. That was a uh an absolutely banger of an album.
SPEAKER_03Oh, it's been on my uh Apple plan for three days now, just on reveat.
SPEAKER_02And that's a group you have to see live once in your live. I was one time myself. You uh you it's a it's a concert incredible experience. You don't the album doesn't capture it, you know, and it's really good. Well, they're like a modern-day jam band, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and they don't like that title, by the way.
SPEAKER_03They don't like the jam band title, no, they also don't like being reminded about dumping the bus in the river.
SPEAKER_04Anyway, I've been a fan since '96, just real quick. Who turned me on to it was Bo Tackett, Kentucky Opera Junior Pros on a trip to Lexington. We went to disc jockey at Lexton Green. Remember that?
SPEAKER_08Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04And uh he showed me the crash album. I was like, oh, okay. Interesting. Made me buy it, and I fell in love since. But actually, I th it might have been before we went in, he let me listen to Ants Marching. He already had a copy. So Bo Tackett, thank you, Dave Matthews.
SPEAKER_05Okay, Bo Tackett is is the originator of both of our loves. Uh, and one that I I think that I'll need to mention, but it'll be like a future reference one, possibly for three of us, because in the uh in the preparation for this episode, Ren, uh uh Jamie and I were talking. And uh maybe in a month or so from now, one that might be added to all three of our lists is Charlie Pooth's new album. Because we're all three looking forward to that one coming out.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think James could be added into that too. So that's probably gonna be full.
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, he's I guess he went to get his uh vacuum out and the mother.
SPEAKER_00Just in time. Perfect time. I heard someone mention Charlie Pooth, and like I was just awake.
SPEAKER_03There's still stuff all over the floor. Yeah, totally.
SPEAKER_00I'm looking at it right now.
SPEAKER_05Well, that'll wrap up wrap up segment two. So we're gonna go on to segment number three, uh, which uh Ren usually leads off for us. Uh, what we're gonna start with in the games realm, Ren.
SPEAKER_04Well, we'll lead off with a little bit of catching up with our songs of FM Arena Rock Tournament Challenge. All right. Uh last episode we had our sweet 16. There's quite a few upsets. And oh, let me here. Oh, let me share my screen. Let's see here. Okay. You got it.
SPEAKER_03So did I call that Jamie was gonna take Ren's.
SPEAKER_05Yes, Jamie's gonna vote in Ren's.
SPEAKER_03On the last one, I would like Ren to vote and Jamie to uh take James's vote.
SPEAKER_02Hey, it involves Martley Crew, as I see. It doesn't. I don't think he's qualified to vote for that.
SPEAKER_03He's gonna he's gonna vote with his heart or his gut.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm gonna vote with my Venmo account. You know the username.
SPEAKER_05I did not even think about this, but this is one of our early pick one to saves right here.
SPEAKER_03It is. We're coming back to episode one, Journey versus Foreigner.
SPEAKER_04But they're not eliminated from existence, is the difference. They just lose this tournament. Okay.
SPEAKER_03You know, I think we did eliminate them from existence. So Foreigner, why are they even in this?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's impossible.
SPEAKER_05Uh well, I'm gonna try to help redeem them and I'm gonna vote Foreigner.
SPEAKER_03You know, I made this decision once and I was correct then, and I'm correct now, and I'm gonna go with Journey.
SPEAKER_06All right. Journey.
SPEAKER_00I'll say it again. Only one of these vocalists were featured, and we are the world. And that's Steve Perry of Journey, so I'm going Journey.
SPEAKER_05It's just cause uh Lou Graham was like, I ain't got time for that.
SPEAKER_04Well, there's no time, but uh Jamie, you give us a final score. I would have gone for Foreigner.
SPEAKER_03I know. I feel like James. Oh, I was I was hoping you wouldn't talk, James, because I knew Jamie was gonna go foreigner and then it would set up a two-two tie, but foreigner made a late push there at the end, but closer game than anybody expected, I guess. Oh, they did better than uh episode one.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. All right, Queen Toto. Uh 1213 matchup. Gotta go with the personal feelings here. Even though I do love some queen and Freddy Mercury, I'm gonna have to go with Toto.
SPEAKER_06I won't go with Queen.
SPEAKER_00I'm going Toto.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna go with Queen. Even though I I really appreciate the musicianship of Toto. I really like the music of Queen.
SPEAKER_05Well, now that's a tie ball game. Tie ball game. Go to James in the title.
SPEAKER_02So who was it in a previous episode that would talk about talked about Bohemian Rhapsody? And if it hadn't been for the movie Wayne's World, we would have never known about Queen.
SPEAKER_05I think that was James's pick for that. That was his soundtrack.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Mike Myers actually did not want the Bohemian Rhapsody scene in the movie.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think in that in that episode, Russ brought it up, and Ren and I both said we hadn't heard uh really any Queen until we heard that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I would have never been exposed to Queen if it hadn't been for the movie, probably. It was not uh of uh my 70s father and and Rusty's 70s father, Queen was not on the list of things we really listened to. No same. Uh even though I did appreciate Killer Queen, that song, and I do like um, I don't like We Are the Champions, but I do like another one bites the dust. Okay. Um, but if I gotta pick somebody here, it's I think it's a no-brainer. I'm picking Toto. All right. I mean, Africa, think about the stage power Africa has had as a song. So I I and the musicianship and everything else about them, they've had some great stuff. I go with Toto all day. Cool, awesome.
SPEAKER_05Uh my wife would kill me if I didn't pick Arrows.
SPEAKER_03James, I'd like to remind you who you have one arm before you make this win.
SPEAKER_00Oh well, here's the thing I can't see the screen. So you said one arm, and I think Russ is Aerosmith. So is that is it Def Leppard in his?
SPEAKER_01It is, it is okay.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Arrow Smith.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Christopher.
SPEAKER_06I hate to, but Arosmith. I like them both. They've run up the score on Def Leppard.
SPEAKER_03Well, the game's already over, so just out of appreciation of Def Leppard, I think.
SPEAKER_00Come back.
SPEAKER_03Well, I know math. We're going to five.
SPEAKER_00Anything can happen.
SPEAKER_02You know, I really like Def Leppard, uh, but I would probably pick Earl Smith in this. Clean, sweet. Six, six destroyed to three.
SPEAKER_04Five to nothing. Wow, okay. Sticks, Motley Crew. Final game of the night. Rengo ahead. Sticks. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So it's one to one.
SPEAKER_06I don't say sticks.
SPEAKER_05Two to one.
SPEAKER_06So much better vocals, harmonies. I mean, better music.
SPEAKER_03Disagreeing with any of that.
SPEAKER_05I mean, uh, James, it's sticks and Motley Crue, by the way.
SPEAKER_03Just like to remind you who drove a boat and how they drove it.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's it's like an alternate version of it.
SPEAKER_03Just go ahead and put I don't need to hear James. Just go ahead and put his vote up there.
SPEAKER_00I feel like in another universe, someone, another version of me, has broken a Motley Cruise city. Oh, wait, that happened tonight.
SPEAKER_03All the way. I hope you step on it.
SPEAKER_05Uh all right. So uh it doesn't matter who you pick, James.
SPEAKER_02I I know that, but you know, it depends on for me. The vote might be is Diddy's the young with them.
SPEAKER_05Um you're talking about the whole encompassing sticks.
SPEAKER_02I mean, if they're gonna do Mr. Roboto, I'm not voting for them. Well, they don't, they don't anymore.
SPEAKER_03They do all the time. Oh my god. I've heard sometimes they do it twice.
SPEAKER_02This is I would vote sticks.
SPEAKER_05I would sticks. All right, well, that completes that round.
SPEAKER_04Here's our final four journey Toto Arrow Smith sticks. The SOFM Arena Rock Challenge.
SPEAKER_00I dread this.
SPEAKER_04So the uh final four will take place on the next episode, and we'll go ahead and do the championship game as well.
SPEAKER_02Okay, wait a minute, wait a minute. I'm just looking at this whole bracket. How in okay, how in the world did Toto beat Van Halen? Oh, you should have been there.
SPEAKER_05Uh because my my my argument was that I really loved half of what Van Halen had to offer with the Van Hagar era.
SPEAKER_03And I don't know if you noticed, Jamie, they didn't just beat Van Halen.
SPEAKER_02That was slaughtered. I mean, slaughter them a queen slaughtered ACDC.
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Ooh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, the truth is Toto got washed on the seedings there. So I think Toto should have been ranked higher. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's just Toto dominated their mid-major. He got that 13 seed.
SPEAKER_05Steve Steve Lucather had a great game. He uh, you know, he scored, I think he scored something like 59 points.
SPEAKER_0019, I heard.
SPEAKER_05All right, that'll do it for the SOFM Arena Rock Challenge. Uh, check us out next episode to see who advances on and wins the championship. Go ahead, Ren.
SPEAKER_04Well, I'll have to just uh James, if you want to go ahead and take it away, or Russ, if you want to explain it some more, I gotta answer the door and I'll be right back. Okay, all right.
SPEAKER_03You can stop sharing your screen.
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's like every time I do a podcast, somebody tries to visit me or something. I'll be right back off, it's Vin Sneal.
SPEAKER_00I really hope Vin Sneal's at his door.
SPEAKER_05All right, James, I'll let you take this one away, but all right, guys.
SPEAKER_00Well, I've traded in the keyboard, I've traded in the guitar. Now we got a steal. Okay. So instead of guess the synth and guess the riff, we're doing guess the steel guitar part. Guess the steel part. Is it gonna be hard? Maybe. There's one song that might just have two notes.
SPEAKER_05But I feel like Jamie's got the advantage here. He's been a country DJ for practically uh half of his life or more than half of his life, and his dad also plays steel guitar, so he might have a little bit of an advantage on us here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I grew up with a I grew up with a show bud in my living room at the age of two. In an apartment in Columbus. Yeah. No kidding. I mean, people have furniture, but not my father. He had a couch and a chair and a steel guitar and a bench and some amplifiers all in the living room together.
SPEAKER_00That's what I grew up with. So the pressure's on for me because Jamie's dad is a phenomenal steel player, and I am less than mediocre. So go easy on me. Are we ready for song number one? Sure. As always, I'll play the riff. I may play the whole thing. I may not. I may play a pre-chorse. Oh no bridges. No bridge today. No bridge today, no. Okay. All right. Song number one.
SPEAKER_01Zach Tom. Yeah. I never lie.
SPEAKER_05Is that the two-note one you're talking about? No. That was more than that was really close. I mean, uh, I would dare to say the three of us got a point there. Ryan and I said it simultaneously, and Jamie was right there with us. So everybody, all three of us get one. Chris, you get nothing.
SPEAKER_03Yep, I think that sounds fair.
SPEAKER_05That's fine.
SPEAKER_00Y'all ready for number two? Sure. This is the reason I got a steal was this song right here.
SPEAKER_03Amarilla by morning.
SPEAKER_00Here we go.
SPEAKER_02I told you, less than mediocre. That's what I was going to do.
SPEAKER_01Really? Really? Is that it? That was it. I knew what he was gonna do.
SPEAKER_05It's a great lick, but you did it like it's a great note.
SPEAKER_06I bet he gets those one note challenges.
SPEAKER_03And he was a great Ronnie Parker played at Renfro Valley for a while. He's a little bit older now, but man, just watching him play.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's yeah, I got to I I don't know his name. You might want to look it up, Ryan. Uh, but back when I lived in Louisville, my dad and I would go to uh go to Shepherdsville and sing at the Shepherdsville Country Music Show. And at one point, uh my dad and I both got to sing in front of George Jones's steel player.
unknownOh, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh and he was the guy. Uh who did uh he played steel on that Vince Gill song uh Look at Us. And Dad done that song in that show, but uh I can't remember his name. But we we were on stage and played with George Johnson.
SPEAKER_03Was it Johnny Winter?
SPEAKER_05No, no.
SPEAKER_03That's guitar player.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's you give me a minute, I'll tell you who it was.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Sounds like Rand's fighting with somebody.
SPEAKER_02Hal Rug. Hal Rug? Doesn't sound right. Give me just a second. I'm gonna have to cheat it. I just can't I just can't recall it off the top of my head.
SPEAKER_05Are you gonna do your third one, James? Buttermilk is his nickname, by the way. Well, Jamie's distracted. Go ahead and play your next one, James.
SPEAKER_03I'll stop. I'll stop. Hey, uh Jamie, can you look under your table?
SPEAKER_02Wait a minute. It's uh Buttermilk John something, and I can't think of the name, his last name.
SPEAKER_03Buttermilk John John Hughley Hugh Hugh John uh Huey.
SPEAKER_02That's it. That's him, John Huey.
SPEAKER_03That's it. Yeah, that's him. And he he got his nickname uh for his love of buttermilk and cornbread.
SPEAKER_05Probably. Okay. All right, James gives a novel. Here we go. In the heart of the night, Poco.
SPEAKER_03That is right. Very good. All right, so we're at two, two, one.
SPEAKER_00Are we ready? Yep.
SPEAKER_03Really? It's not you don't have a note out of a place there, it's not the chair by George Strait.
SPEAKER_05Was that the was that it the chair by George Strait?
SPEAKER_00No. No, that's not it. Wow. I almost needed a few. Empty glass. Empty glass. I thought this would be easier.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Is it in the right key?
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02That'd be great if you said no. I need a little bit more.
SPEAKER_00It's already good.
SPEAKER_02I can't tell you. I mean, I I'm I'm a little stumped on it.
SPEAKER_00You want to give us a clue? It's within the first five seconds of the song. Here's the thing. It has a bounce to it. It has a bounce to it.
SPEAKER_05Uh jump crisscross.
SPEAKER_00Is it a country song? It is a country song, 100%.
SPEAKER_03And it's an OB country song. Shadahooji.
SPEAKER_05It's got a jump to it. Or got a bounce to it. Cowboy hat or no cowboy hat? Uh jump, House of Pain. Nope. Oh, jump Van Halen. No. Okay. Um I don't know.
SPEAKER_01You've got me on that. It sounds like foolish hard by journey. Yeah, that's that's yeah. I can't get out of my head.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Are you ready for it? Sure. Neon Moon, Brooks and Dunn.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I'm calling Foo Bar on that.
SPEAKER_08Oh, nope, it's there.
SPEAKER_05Okay, I I know where it is. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Okay. I guess I need uh other parts of the song to go to the Yeah, he likes to he likes to dissect it and you get like little bitty tiny pieces or or bridges or you know, like uh special live versions or something like that.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_05All right, you got another one?
SPEAKER_03Yep, this one's three notes. Is this the fifth one?
SPEAKER_00Is it the final one?
SPEAKER_03Final one, so this is the dear jerker. All I can do is tie it. Jamie and Russ can win. Okay. There it is.
SPEAKER_00Is that a farewell party? No. No.
SPEAKER_03Is there more to it or is that there can be, yeah. I just want to see if you can get through those first three notes. This is not the grand tour, is it?
SPEAKER_02I'm right there with you, James. That's an older song.
SPEAKER_00It is an older song.
SPEAKER_02That's an older song. That's a that's a classic country song.
SPEAKER_05Um You're cheating hard.
SPEAKER_00No, that's a good guess.
SPEAKER_02Is it a George Jones song?
SPEAKER_00It is not a George Jones song.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Far and Young. Buck Owens song.
SPEAKER_00Nope, not Buck Owens.
SPEAKER_05Is it Together Again? Is it Farron Young?
SPEAKER_00It is not.
SPEAKER_05I just wanted to say that. I like that name.
SPEAKER_02So it's not Together Again and it's not um. Is it a Keith Whitley song?
SPEAKER_05It is. Oh, he's on his own. Play it again.
SPEAKER_03Play it again. That's not never go around ears, is it? Yeah, never go round ears.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. So that's a that's that's a tie across the board. Except for Chris.
SPEAKER_03I mean, do you think you got one more? One more.
SPEAKER_05That's also a Merrill Haggard song, too, by the way. Yeah, throw in one more, James, just just to see if we can find that get a we'll have to get a winner here.
SPEAKER_00Oh gosh, do I know one? Like I said, less than mediocre. You all are streaming for the moon. Uh let me think.
SPEAKER_05Sleepwalk.
SPEAKER_00Do sleepwalk.
SPEAKER_02I'll guess it sleepwalk. Santo and who does it? Johnny. Can you do Highway 40 Blues? No. I can't. That's a tough one. My dad can.
SPEAKER_03I know that was that was my favorite part about playing with Ronnie. We did a cover of Highway 40 Blues.
SPEAKER_02That was my dad's warm-up. He'd sit down and just play that. That's a warm-up.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'll play a solo of a song. Okay. Just a bit of a solo. You have to guess what it is.
SPEAKER_03All right. Zach caught it.
SPEAKER_05Josh Turner, your man. No. Okay. I thought he was going to go back to that.
SPEAKER_02But for the grace of God, Keith Urban.
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_05We do that song, James.
SPEAKER_00Now you've already been guessing that.
SPEAKER_05That's uh Zach, and now it's not Zack Top.
SPEAKER_00Zack Top.
SPEAKER_05Not a I Never Lie.
SPEAKER_01I Never Lie Again? Yep. You come back with a song you already did. I guess that before he started. Yeah, he did. He literally did. So by default, we're gonna have to give it the ride.
SPEAKER_03All right, one at a time. That's a well, well, well in time.
SPEAKER_05Uh okay.
SPEAKER_03Songs of M history. Thanks, James.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh James and James. Actually, signs a lot like, but for the grace of God. There's a a a stanza in that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it does have but for the grace of God. And it was like the notes he played there at the beginning.
SPEAKER_02That's one of the rare Keith Urban songs that had a still guitar in it. Very true.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna learn that LL Langley song. Uh was it uh he chose Texas? Choosing Texas.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like it has a weird tone about it, but it's so Jamie would have definitely got that because I do not listen to it besides occasionally on TikTok when I scroll across it.
SPEAKER_05It's a great song. Well that wraps up uh uh uh uh I guess that guess the riff uh still guitar edition.
SPEAKER_02Uh guess the lick. If it's still guitar edition. Yeah, it has to be guess the riff.
SPEAKER_05Okay, guess the lick, guess the lick, still guitar edition. And that uh that leads us to our final game of the evening and waiting in the wings, I think Ren or or somebody.
SPEAKER_03Who knows?
SPEAKER_05Come on down and all and all okay, it makes a lot of sense. Randy's a Beetlejuice fan because that was a Beetlejuice line.
SPEAKER_04How you doing, brother? Are you doing all right? I'm doing all right, buddy. I'm glad to be here with you, fellas. I told Rand, I was like, I ain't I ain't a one and done. I'm gonna come back on as a podcast. I'll tell you a lot.
SPEAKER_05Well, you just got a short little piece there the last time, so you deserve to do a do a whole segment, and you're gonna oh my god, he's gonna lead us in the pick one to save game.
SPEAKER_04You're doggone right, I'm gonna. Will you explain this game for these fellas for me? What'd you do at boy?
SPEAKER_05All right, so pick one to save. He's going to give us in this edition, we get band versus band, and we have to pick one to save. And the caveat being that anything that the artist has uh ever done will be erased from history. So any any one that they may have directly uh influenced or something like that, that won't exist. And I think in this version too, we're going to do song versus song on pick one to save. So now that might have uh you know went forward to uh to influence another song or something like that. So uh Ren had a little twist there for Randy to to uh to give to us on this one. All right, Randy, you want you want to fire it up for us?
SPEAKER_04All right, here we go, boss. Round one. It's artist versus artist, like they paint or something. All right, first said ours is uh Garth Brooks versus George Straight.
SPEAKER_03I know Russ is gonna have problems with this one, but for me it's a no-brainer.
SPEAKER_05My mother was a huge Garth Brooks fan. The reason I have this tattoo right here. Her nickname was Guijee. That was my my dad called her. So that's Guijee with two Garth Brooks G's in it, her birth date and her death date. So I have to, have to go with Garth Brooks.
SPEAKER_00Well, all right. Does Randy have a mustache or am I just seeing that?
SPEAKER_05I can't I can't tell. It looks like a little bit. He may be leftover stains from something he drank last night.
SPEAKER_04Whatever. Hey, Chris, what are you picking?
SPEAKER_05Garth Brooks.
SPEAKER_04Okay, we got two from Brooks. How about you, Ryan?
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna have to go George Street.
SPEAKER_04I figured you would. I'll just go ahead and tell you, King of Country. George Strait from me. All right. Is that your name, James? What's your name, James? That's you.
SPEAKER_05I think he's talking to you, James.
SPEAKER_00Something funny about. He sounds just like a customer. I used to have a sound house. I've been there a few times. I guarantee it. I'm going George Straight, the king.
SPEAKER_04Okay, that's four to four. How about you, Jamie and Jamie? I tell you what, I'm a big fan of yours. I love listening to you on that radio.
SPEAKER_03Have you ever won a Dairy Queen ice cream cake, Randy?
SPEAKER_02No, no, says I. I bet I called it, I bet he called me and I told him there wasn't any school in Floyd County one time.
SPEAKER_04I got a call every time. I gotta know what stuff. I know you know it.
SPEAKER_05So, okay, a quick question here. Is Jamie picking in your place, Randy? Because the six of us that could end up in a tie, or we gonna go with a tie? What are we doing?
SPEAKER_04I don't know. I just had to say I like George Strait, so don't count me. Just don't count me.
SPEAKER_05Okay, all right. Then you get to be the tiebreaker.
SPEAKER_02I mean, come on, 60 number one heads. It's George Strait all day. George Strait. All day long. Yeah, bro. Yeah, well, and he had a movie, and he didn't have to be somebody else to be in it.
SPEAKER_05Uh he wasn't George Strait in the movie. He was dusty. He was dusty.
SPEAKER_02But you know what? And he had the ponytail and the five. Yeah, I mean, it was as generic as Chris Keynes. On the record, though, it said George Strait on the soundtrack.
SPEAKER_05It didn't say and on the Flash Gordon, uh, it said Queen on it.
SPEAKER_03All I want to say, Rusty, is if one of them turns out to be a serial killer, one of us doesn't have a tattoo.
SPEAKER_05That's that's for my mama. I I'll I'll I'll go and I'll go with I'll I'll go with Garth to the end, boys. Good one, though.
SPEAKER_04All right.
SPEAKER_05All right, what's next? Yeah, we did.
SPEAKER_04Moving on. Here we go. Diamond Rio versus Little Texas. Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh. Think about that, boy. Think about it. Ooh, ooh. Wow. Did you put these together, Randy, or did Rennie put them together? Buddy, I'm just reading the best I can. Renny, Rennie, Rennie's done it to us again.
SPEAKER_05What do you say, Russ? Uh Diamond Rio, Little Texas. Diamond Rio, Little Texas. I gotta go to Little Texas. I knew you would. I had their stuff. I don't know that I ever owned a Diamond Rio. Yeah, I did. I own one. Own one Diamond Rio, but I owned everything Little Texas done, so I've got to go to Little Texas.
SPEAKER_04Ah bless Texas. How about you, Chris? With his own hands.
SPEAKER_06Diamond Rio.
SPEAKER_04Well, nobody's perfect. How about you, Ryan?
SPEAKER_03Man, I don't, you know, this this one really affects me, right? Russ, what was my uh well, Jamie was there too. What was my first dance song? Was that oh Shandoah? Never mind. So we're going Little Texas.
SPEAKER_01Little Texas is right.
SPEAKER_05Okay. James. Is that still your name, James?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's still my name. Uh man, if I could just move Jimmy Olander to Little Texas, this would be so much easier of a choice. Because Jimmy Olander is my biggest thing in uh Diamond Rio. So I'm gonna go, I'm I'm gonna go Little Texas.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay. Well, I've lost the door. Little Texas ahead. Little Texas is ahead.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Your dad's really right. What you say, R Jamie?
SPEAKER_02Uh, you know, I would have gone with the Smoky Mountain Boys, otherwise known as Diamond Rio. Yeah. I get it.
SPEAKER_04All right then. Hey, uh little Texas for the win, I believe.
SPEAKER_05Uh you're right. Uh Randy, can I ask you a quick question? Uh let's see that hat you got on there. Ren ain't up here. Let's see that hat you got on there, Randy. Oh, you say Randy. I don't know. You call him for Rand, but it's like pretty close. Randy, Randy. You know, you can tell your oh, Spider John Hall descendants. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Floyd County. I like that. Yeah. Mud Creek represent, boy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Mud Creek in the house.
SPEAKER_04Oh. Johnny or some of the Mustangs. Woo! All right. Couple of females coming up, boy. All right.
SPEAKER_05Reva McIntyre and Shania Twine. Ooh. I gotta go, Reba. I've never been a big Shania fan. Just never have. We'll have to save Reba. That's all right.
SPEAKER_00I know why. I know why he chose this.
SPEAKER_05The TV show.
SPEAKER_00Rennie picked No Rennie picked Rennie picked this because I literally pitched an idea to the Opry of doing a tribute to the women in country. And Shania and Reba were the first two names I gave.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_03This is really tough for me because I love Reba's music. Well, actually, it was another thought. For a split second, I was thinking strawberry wine will be eliminated, but it's not. It's Dana Carter. So we're going uh Reba.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_00Korea?
SPEAKER_06Reba, all the way.
SPEAKER_00Okay. James. I'm I'm I'm the black cat here going Shania Twain. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Jamie. If it's just about the music itself, I would have went with Reba McIntyre. I love the tune, Whoever's in New England's through with you. Uh You Lie is a great song from her. She had a lot of great what you call a radio hit. Uh, because it has that sound, it just sounds good on the radio. I would have went with Reba McIntyre all day.
SPEAKER_03Oh man, I thought there was gonna be a butt there. That was gonna really shock me. Well, would Randy need to have a conversation after the show? Was it like picking Shania and potentially replacing you permanently with Randy?
SPEAKER_05Was uh was it Linda Davis she done that duet with?
SPEAKER_03Uh Linda Davis. Yes. Great song. And do you know who Linda Davis' daughter is?
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, she is with Lady Anton, uh Lady A. Yeah. Um, help me here.
SPEAKER_05Uh is she even a Davis? She's not a Davis. No, she's not a Davis. Okay. Uh you look that up, Ren. Randy. Okay. Randy, let's move on.
SPEAKER_04I was just sitting here talking about Shania. I don't know who won that room.
SPEAKER_03I think Reba won it. Going back to Shania. If you can find the story of Red Atkins talking about Shania sitting on his lap, it's pretty funny. Floating around like that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was during uh during one of the award shows, wasn't it, or something? Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I'll have to watch that.
SPEAKER_04Number four is Tim McGraw and Travis Tritt.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's a no-brainer for me.
SPEAKER_04Well, go ahead then, Buck.
SPEAKER_03Travis Tritt.
SPEAKER_04Um.
SPEAKER_05I'm with Ryan. I'm with Ryan. Travis Tritt. Well, I'll go ahead and say Tim McGraw just to it was kind of a wash for me, so I'll just go Tim McGraw.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Who ain't we heard around now?
SPEAKER_02Jamie. I you know what? I love Travis Tritt, but I would have picked Tim McGraw just because I like the album Set This Circus Down. I really enjoy a lot of his stuff. I mean, Everywhere was a great record. He had some great 90s country. And I think about 90s country.
SPEAKER_05Have y'all heard the song he done he was in later in his career? But uh, if you're reading this, that's a good song. That is a song that will rip your heart out.
SPEAKER_03So, James, I think one thing we overlooked in this uh that may affect you more than you realize is we eliminated Tim McGraw, which also eliminates Tim McGraw.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know what I'm putting down?
SPEAKER_04Quite the region in there, bro. Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift.
SPEAKER_03Taylor Swift.
SPEAKER_02Oh, and you think Tim McGraw? Yeah. Yeah. Hey, I listen.
SPEAKER_03So that song will now be like when you think somebody please throw out somebody real quick because I'm D. Snyder.
SPEAKER_05You said throw the mail.
SPEAKER_00Hey, but we saved the Eagles because Travis Dripp won.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_05Uh didn't think about that. Uh all right. Next one, Randy. Uh, Randy. Randy. Taylor, what a duo. Oh.
SPEAKER_01I thought he was asleep.
SPEAKER_08He was just out in Raw Land there.
SPEAKER_04All right, this is the last kind of artist. Vince Gill and Colin Ray. Vince Gill.
SPEAKER_02Vince Gill. Vince Gill. Vince Gill and a sweep. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Colin Gill. All right, damn, bald. That was amazing.
SPEAKER_02I don't see Colin Ray going on the road with the Eagles do you? Yeah, really.
SPEAKER_03A quick funny story. We we hired this guy at work, and his name is Colin Ray. And he's a younger guy. And we were in a meeting, and I said, I'm I just made a reference, and he said, It's funny that you said that because nobody has ever mentioned that to me, but that's who I'm named after. My mom's a big Colin Ray fan.
SPEAKER_05Is it spelled the same way? His last name is R-A-Y-E, right?
SPEAKER_03Uh no, his his last name is Ray, so it's not spelled the same way. Okay. Is that right? I might be lying.
SPEAKER_05Well, Colin Ray, his last name was spelled R-A-Y-E.
SPEAKER_02Actually, was it? Actually, it wasn't. It wasn't? That's the stage name was spelled that way. The real name is W-R-A-Y.
SPEAKER_01Oh, Ray.
SPEAKER_02I actually style it W.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Got that whole story wrong, Rusty. I have two guys, one's Colin, one's Ray. They would say their name's Colin and Ray. And I said that.
SPEAKER_08Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_02Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story with W jerk.
SPEAKER_03No, he told me. Hold on. No, because I said, can you guys not say Colin and Ray? Because they'll say Colin Ray and whoever. Can you reverse the order? Because I think that he said that's funny because my middle name's Ray, and that's who I'm named after. The last name's something different.
SPEAKER_05It'd be like uh it'd be like you're saying I know this guy named John uh uh from the county that I'm in, Anderson County. So he's John Anderson. That's pretty funny. No, his name is Colin. Move on. Let's go, Randy.
SPEAKER_00What was the award that Vince Gill just won? Was it the one of the three idiotic things I have ever heard? Uh I believe he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. And like when he got it, he was like, you know, I think I'm the only one who's won this award that hasn't smoked pot. It's named after Willie Nielsen. Yeah, that was it. Okay.
SPEAKER_05All right, Randy.
SPEAKER_04I'll tell you what I've been doing all day.
SPEAKER_07Before we go around two, I've been picking up these pies and snakes. All out in the yard. They're everywhere. Pies and poison snakes. Are you a snake handler? Buddy, I collect them and I sell them. To Hollywood.
SPEAKER_06Did he just turn into Ernest?
SPEAKER_07Hollywood. Oh, Pies.
SPEAKER_02Are you from McCurry County? I'm just thinking of the creatures down there.
SPEAKER_07I'm on the Vault Creek over that Vault Creek trading post. I go there and I float up my beerful. I can get a dollar a piece out of these pies and snakes.
SPEAKER_00Randy, the did you ever live in McGolfin County? My dad ate rattlesnake with someone from McGolin County, and it may have been you. That's good stuff, man. I'll tell you what.
SPEAKER_07I love to get them barbecue fork rounds at the Bull Creek Trading Post. That's where I met my fourth wife. And also got me a bootleg coffee of uh wild hogs. That's a good one.
SPEAKER_04Anyway, enough about me. Round two. Song versus song. This is gonna get nasty. Friends in low places, Garth Brooks versus Neon Moon, Brooks, and Doug.
SPEAKER_05Ooh. Which one are you saving? I'm I'm interested to hear Ryan's answer on this one. Well, I'll go first. I'll save Neon Moon.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I second that. I'm going Neon Moon.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm gonna go Neon Moon, even though it's a Garth Brooks song. It's just that song overplayed.
SPEAKER_02I'll save Neon Moon because you still have Mark Chestnut's version of Friends in Low Places you can still enjoy. Oh, he did it first. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So I mean Neon Moon. I'd like to eliminate it to get rid of that TikTok dance thing that happened. That was really annoying. And Friends in Low Places is a pretty big moment usually in the night for us because it's a great sing-along. So I would go Friends in Low Places just for that. Yeah, it's gone, Bubby.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_03You're fired, boy. I'm pulling upset list right now, marking it off this week.
SPEAKER_02You gotta find the Martin Chestnut version, which really sucks. It doesn't sound anything like Garf Brooks.
SPEAKER_01And nobody would know it. They'd be like, What's this garbage?
SPEAKER_05Was it him or hate it? Was it him or Tracy Bird that done the uh the other version of I Don't Want to Miss a Thing?
SPEAKER_02Uh Martin Chestnut also did I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. Did he do a version of that? Yes. Yes, he did. It was a number one hit, too, by the way.
SPEAKER_05And it also sucked.
SPEAKER_02And it was terrible. I liked it. And I like Bart Chestnut, but he he's been pitched some bad things or had bad takes on good songs.
SPEAKER_04All right, Randy. All right, number two, Matt Chef, is Chattahoochee versus sold John Michael Montgomery.
SPEAKER_05Sold John Michael Montgomery. I mentioned earlier that my dad and I would sing at the Shepherdsville Country Music Show when we lived in Louisville. And that was one of the songs I sang. I wore the cowboy hat. I had the denim vest and the black t-shirt underneath it. I was a John Michael Montgomery wannabe. I sang that and those blue-haired ladies loved it. They ate it up, so I've got to keep sold.
SPEAKER_03I'm going sold. Uh sold. Once again, it's a pretty big, big moment when we whip that out. Chattahoochee does fine. But I I'm I'm I'm purely looking at my set list and how we're destroying it.
SPEAKER_00Sold. John Michael McGamer.
SPEAKER_04Well, how about you, Jamie?
SPEAKER_02I would go Chattahoochee just because of the line in it that says, you know, he was trying to get frisky with a girl, but you know, she wanted to go home, and he still went out and had fun with her after she went home anyway.
SPEAKER_00With a burger and is that your daughter's favorite song for a while? Huh? Wasn't that your daughter's favorite song for the longest time was Chattahoochee?
SPEAKER_02Chattahoochee. No, no, she was a Ring of Fire fan. Okay. I had to play Ring of Fire all the time in the house because she loved it. And she loved the song. Well, then she's a ring of fire right now.
SPEAKER_01She lives.
SPEAKER_05She might not like James then because a couple episodes back, James's hot take was that uh Johnny Cash was overrated.
SPEAKER_02Johnny Cash overrated. God bless you. You were three when I was on the radio. It's okay.
SPEAKER_04All right, Randy. The sold win already. Sold win, yeah. All right then. Number three. Check yes or no, George Strait, the king. Or don't take the girl.
SPEAKER_05Okay, here's where I'm gonna get to redeem myself for having to pick Garth Brooks against George Strait. I'm gonna pick George Strait, check yes or no.
SPEAKER_04Okay. How about you, Chris?
SPEAKER_06Don't take the girl.
SPEAKER_03Right. I'm gonna go check yes or no, but I'd also like to say, by the rules of this, I had we eliminated George Strait, so isn't he gone from the song also? The song doesn't exist.
SPEAKER_04This round only the song disappears, not the artist. Yeah.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_05You and you and Chris take it's too literal. It's just like going back to the movies one. It was like uh pick Terminator over Robocop. Well, now if we don't pick Terminator, that means Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't exist, and we don't get kindergarten cop and everything. It's just it's the it's the universe the movie created.
SPEAKER_02At least those two are worse than when we played hero clicks. They're worse because they're they're literally taking it to another level. Yeah, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_00So James. Check yes or no.
SPEAKER_02Jamie, Jeremy. It's check yes or no for me. Because I mean the other one is about death. Randy's daddy was taking him fishing. Yeah, no, we all had note in school, yes or no.
SPEAKER_03I'm a little bit choked up there, Russ. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Bobby's daddy?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but it's for this sake of this, it was Randy's daddy.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Randy's daddy.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, check yes or no. Is that what one was that? Yeah. All right. All right, moving on. Number four. Is there life out there by Reba? Independence day. Martin of Upride.
SPEAKER_05I don't really care for either one of them. Randy really likes Reba. Yeah, he does. Randy and Reba.
SPEAKER_03I mean, we're looking, we're looking at this, and he likes to be a big fan of George Strait, big fan of Reba.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Big fan of Tim McGraw, I believe.
SPEAKER_05So which songs do I like? I'm an Indian app.
SPEAKER_04I'm putting that one on the table. Fellers are ripped off.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna go Independence Day.
SPEAKER_05Uh just on vocal prowess, I gotta go Independence Day too.
SPEAKER_03I think it had been other Reba songs, I would have gone with those.
SPEAKER_05Possibly.
SPEAKER_03Possibly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Independence Day.
SPEAKER_05And whoever's in New England, that would definitely won for me.
SPEAKER_02Independence Day. Yeah, it's a clean sweep. Independence Day. He's got a great still guitar part, too. Oh Reba!
SPEAKER_03It's all right. And I'll tell you how much I paid attention. I don't even remember what the Reba song was when I was trying to tell you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Story video. Back when story videos were a thing.
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's no some will say it was somewhat controversial back in the day. Mm-hmm. That's a big word, Randy. Go rest high on that man. Oh Lord.
SPEAKER_05Go rest tie. I mean, that's my mom versus my dad. Okay, so I've got to erase mom and dad from it and just go with it what wanna go rest high. I've personally seen that at a few frequent funerals.
SPEAKER_00Go rest high. Did you pick one? Did he say James or Dang? Hang up, James. Go ahead. The dance. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Now this is about if you pick one, save one. If you don't save it, you're erasing it from existence. Yes. Vince Gill wrote that song about his brother. I mean, Garth Brooks didn't write nothing. And I love the dance. I love it, but he didn't write it. And I mean, I if you ask me which one I like the best, I like the dance. But if you're asking to save one, I'm saving go rest high on that mountain. It's got much more of an impact on people's lives than the dance. There's another version with a new verse.
SPEAKER_05Uh missing lyric to it. Yeah, he added a different verse. Another verse.
SPEAKER_06So round there goes your closure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05His group likes to leave people, you know, wanting to go home and kill themselves because the last thing they heard after drinking on out was a dance.
SPEAKER_03Most of them are gone. You got three.
SPEAKER_06I mean, if if you want to keep that feeling, you can replace it with empty glass.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, right. There you go. Good.
SPEAKER_00They get a bottle of Zoloft as you that comes to the door.
SPEAKER_05For those of you remaining in the audience, here's your free complimentary Zoloft because we played the dance as our closer.
SPEAKER_03You don't want to play it in the middle when they're having a good time. Yeah, you can not play it. I don't want to play at the end either, buddy. A pretty good game there, Randy, at the end.
SPEAKER_04No way.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_04Uh-uh.
SPEAKER_05So that's all we got, Bald. So Ran okay, Randy, a question for you.
SPEAKER_04Oh, for all the artists we lost. Go rest the on that mountain. All the songs we lost in that round. It was nice to know you. I expected Randy to be bald. I don't know why.
SPEAKER_05I ain't bald. What's the matter with you, bud? So Randy is is is Randy short for like Randall?
SPEAKER_04I don't know. Mom and dad call me Randy. Brands call me Randy. I'm Randy. Uh it wasn't Randall Hank.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, right. Rockin' Randall Hank. Oh, Randy Hall. Randy Hall, okay. Or Randy Mud Creek. Uh well, that that wraps up the game segment, and therefore it wraps up the episode. We always like to close the episode when we have a guest and let Ryan ask a final question to our guest. Ryan, what is your question for Jamie?
SPEAKER_03Oh, so Jamie, I'd just like to know. Um, do you remember the Lacretia McEwell incident of 1995 at South Flow?
SPEAKER_02I remember we played the song a lot on it in band and that introduced me to Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
SPEAKER_03It was also the first time I ever played a drum set. Oh, really? Mm-hmm. Yeah, and I never had never played a drum set until that day. Uh, the other guys couldn't, Bartley was trying to hum it, they couldn't figure it out. And I sat down and played it first time I ever played. So that leads me to my follow-up question. Who would you say is the best drummer you played with at South Floyd High School? Uh Floyd? Yeah, South Floyd, four years and younger. Uh, so not not you know a grade younger, two grades. We're going max, you were a senior, they were a freshman.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah. I'm trying to think who the competition is here. It was uh if it was a stage band, sometimes I played drums.
SPEAKER_03Nope, there was no stage ban on. Yeah, we had a stage band because specifically your senior year. My senior year. Yeah, no, no, DJ. Nope, because he was a senior.
SPEAKER_02He was a yeah, DJ played drums. Uh-huh. Alan played drums when he was a senior.
SPEAKER_03Alan played drums, he was a senior.
SPEAKER_02Tony rained on drums. Yeah, they would have been a freshman. I would have picked, I would have picked you. I don't know though, but here's the thing: DJ could play everything as fast as Bartley warned it to. And you couldn't. But he was a freshman.
SPEAKER_05I was a freshman. The DJ's automatically, you know, he was automatically out. I was actually the only thing.
SPEAKER_02It's got to be a freshman.
SPEAKER_01So I think he said there was no other drummers.
SPEAKER_03You got it. Well, Jamie, uh, I think episode four, is that when our first guest comes out? You'll see that this is a little bit of a pattern.
SPEAKER_05Uh we want to say a big thanks to Jamie for joining us. Thanks, James, for hanging out with us on here on the Songs of FM podcast. Uh, that does it for another one. So uh y'all be looking out for episode 11. We're gonna go all the way up to 14 and got a special thing for you on the 15th episode. So hang out with us for the remainder. And uh thank y'all so much for Ren, for Ryan, for James, for Chris, and for Jam and Jamie. We want to say thank you all so much for joining us on the Songs of FM podcast. We'll see you next time.
