Songs of FM
Songs Of FM is a music-first podcast fueled by friendship, nostalgia, and the era when FM radio actually meant something.
Hosted by lifelong friends — including members of the band The Sons — we dive deep into the music that shaped us, especially the glory days of 80s and 90s rock, alternative, pop, and everything in between.
But it doesn’t stop at the songs.
We spiral into 90s movies, random pop culture, and whatever else somehow makes its way into the room.
It’s part music history, part hot takes, part inside-joke energy — like hanging out after rehearsal when nobody wants to leave.
The focus is music.
The conversation? Anything’s fair game.
New episodes regularly.

SPEAKER_04All right, welcome to Songs of FM, the podcast, episode 13, S1E13 for you. And this one's going to be a little bit off topic from what you generally hear from us, but we wanted to have a little fun. You are going to get your music stuff. It's and it's all going to be, you know, based in the eras that we we like to talk about. And that will come up, and we've got a uh another racket challenge coming up a little later. Uh, but right now uh we're gonna go to Ryan and he's gonna write some wrongs, as he always does. Ryan.
SPEAKER_05I like to start this off by saying E13 was her favorite song.
SPEAKER_04K13 was her favorite. E13 was her favorite episode.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. So in writing Ryan's wrongs, I said uh that I claimed in the previous episode that Toto sweeped through uh the correct word was swept, okay and English is hard. Chris also claimed uh an album was created using AI. My research shows Kazi Ahmed claims to have completed the first full AI album. AI artist Pedro Sendova released two albums created entirely with AI. The first mainstream pop album composed and produced with the help of AI is considered to be an I don't know how you say it, S-K-Y-G-G-E. I don't know if it's just uh it's all capital, it sucks, and it's an album called Hello World. And then the Velvet Sundowner released a 13-track album titled Dust and Silence that showcased an AI boy band. Oh, so all we need, Rennie, is an AI Mariah Carey to come back and they can do one sweet day. Any of those what you were talking about, Chris?
SPEAKER_04That's that's kind of blasphemous. I believe so.
SPEAKER_05Was it the the Pedro Sandoval? Because we didn't go do the research, so I felt like we need to write that by doing it now.
SPEAKER_01It may have been the uh Hello World.
SPEAKER_05Hello World, the first AI uh Hello World. Yeah, that's a weird guy named SKY G G E, and it's considered to be uh the first full album. Uh, anyway, it was hard to prove what was first, um, but we can all agree it probably sucked, and we need to be on the lookout for Renshara's prediction about Dave Grohl in the future. James made a reference to no, that's Dash. Oh, they're both here. They're uh James made a reference to Chris Stapleton's front of house engineer hating Ren's Welcome to My Brain PA. I fact checked that and discovered. James, you know what I discovered?
SPEAKER_02That Chris Stapleton's front of house sound engineer doesn't know Rennie.
SPEAKER_05He not only not only does he uh use an analog mixer, which he does. You were correct about that, but his personality is also analog. It was the worst video I've ever watched. It's like 30 minutes away. Uh Rinfeld acknowledged my reference to Jay-Z's drummer. Uh, anything you'd like to add, Ren? This was their chance to be cool and talk about Jay-Z's drummer.
SPEAKER_04Who, Tony Royster Jr.? Yes.
SPEAKER_05How good is he?
SPEAKER_04He's been good for a long time. He played when he was a kid, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like like somebody else on this, I don't know, panel. You think they would appreciate this little kid up there on the tonight show just killing it? Well, I just we don't appreciate it.
SPEAKER_03That was a YouTube video. I wore that one out. That one that was that kept showing up in everybody's drum feed. Tony Ruster Jr.
SPEAKER_05I claim Nancy Gunthry had a blank alarm system that recorded her kidnapper without a subscription.
SPEAKER_04Uh hold on, hold on.
SPEAKER_05No, you're gonna correct what I'm getting ready to say. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Okay, it's not gun three, it's not, it's guthrie.
SPEAKER_05And it was actually a Google Ness, so I screwed that one up. That was the one I researched, it wasn't off the top of my head. Also, I Google her name probably once every two days to see if anything's come up, and I find that I do the same thing in my Google searches. All right, finally, we're now on episode 13. I feel like there's something we need to publicly address. We talked about it pre-show last episode. Re-watching to prepare for this segment, it really stood out. So for those emailing us worried about Jane's health conditions after Googling or doing a webinar desearch on excessive sweating. It's not I knew it. I knew it. Shadow of his mic.
SPEAKER_04But you're kind of suffering from that tonight.
SPEAKER_05I do. I was looking at that. Mine does not look like a sweat stain. So it's like a black hole. Uh that's all of them. That's all of Brian's wrongs. That's pretty good.
SPEAKER_04All right, now this time I remembered it, and and the reason I found out too, the reason why we didn't do an ad last week was because we had taken all the previous ad money and we got pee-wee. That's how we pulled that off.
SPEAKER_05Well, was it the ad not Mr. T Serial?
SPEAKER_04Uh well, I mean, you could have used it, I guess. But this week ad Mr. T Serial. Okay, so that was the ad. Sponsored the segment. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Uh, but this week he probably they'd probably pay more for that segment than Blockbuster did for the whole episode.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Probably. But uh this week we are back with an ad, Ren.
SPEAKER_03No, we're not. I'm just no, yeah, we are. Today's episode is hypothetically brought to you by Pizza Hut Dining Room. Not the takeout, not the delivery, the hut. I'm talking about the real hut. You know, where you get the red plastic cups. The dim lighting that made it feel like fine dining. At Pizza Hut, you didn't just eat pizza, you committed to it. You sat down, you ordered a pan pizza that took 25 minutes, and nobody complained. Because that was just how long greatness took. And while you waited, you hit the salad bar. You could even enjoy a beer or two or three. Did you know that, James? And when that pizza finally hit the table, you drove right you dove right in. The first bite that absolutely removed a layer of skin from the roof of your mouth. Yep. Word for every time. Pizza Hut Dining Room. When pizza felt fancy.
SPEAKER_04Oh, back in the day, the Pizza Hut Dining Room. They always had one arcade game. I remember. Yeah. One arcade game. It was random.
SPEAKER_05Did COVID kill the Pizza Hut dining room or was that previously?
SPEAKER_04It killed the Pizza Hut. Corporate America.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04That was uh some of my fondest memories were at Pizza Hut.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I miss it. They had a two box. We did a lot of that on the rest of the program.
SPEAKER_04All right. So we have gotten paid. And now we're going to move on to segment number one. Uh segment one uh is the segment that uh you would probably expect to have from this podcast. And it is very interesting to me. It took me a long time to to create mine, but it's called the ultimate band. And we all have uh been tasked with creating our ultimate band of uh famous musicians or music musicians that are close to us that we prefer. And uh we have to be a member of the band in whatever capacity, you know, somebody like James and Ren and Ryan, they could play anything they wanted to in the band, basically. Uh Chris could play drums or bass. All I can do is sing. So uh but uh big deal. Well, uh, you know, I wanted to add uh we and when Chris sat down here tonight in preparation for this episode, he mentioned something, and I'm going to challenge you guys to do this. This is just off the top of my head with your band. You gotta give them a band name. I think that that's a little challenging, I know, but it's also I think it could be fun. So we are to create our ultimate band. Uh what tells what genre uh you would play, what would be your venues of choice, and uh what would be the reason that your band would end up ultimately breaking up. So uh I think we will start with let's start with Ren.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you're not gonna like this. So I'm not the only one that struggled with this. Oh god, I struggled. I struggled. Oh yeah. I mean, I agonized over it. So started, it was easy. Okay, let's start with drums. Me, okay. Okay. I was like, ah, bass player, let's see. Victor Wooten, uh, typical. Keith Horn, lefty, hefty lefty. Well, not so hefty now. Um Stephon Rosard. And then I'm like, uh, let's keep it local, Cody Brandon. No, we can't do that. So, okay, here we go. I'm on the drum, stage left on bass, Mike Kroger, stage right, rhythm guitar, Ryan Peak, center stage on lead guitar and vocals, Chad Kroger. Together we are Nickelback. I hadn't followed my heart. Wow.
SPEAKER_05Maybe a cop out, but I hadn't followed my head. I was gonna make that prediction beforehand.
SPEAKER_04I'm so glad he went first. I would have been so upset if he went first. That was totally bi. It was random. I didn't know he was gonna do that.
SPEAKER_05I can't wait to hear uh number three of the Fatal Flaw.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay. Yeah, so yeah. Yeah, obviously you're gonna play what you're gonna play, and you're gonna play the venues you're that they're used to playing. So, what would be the reason that you would ultimately break up?
SPEAKER_03I get tired of playing Nickelback songs and go back to the house. Okay. All right, fair enough. Fair enough.
SPEAKER_02So we're gonna leave like Forrest Cump style. I think I'll go home now.
SPEAKER_04I think I'll go time go home now.
SPEAKER_02I'm really tired. We can't afford this, Ricky.
SPEAKER_03I'm see, I'm tired of seeing all these women out here bare chested. Time to go home now.
SPEAKER_04Uh okay, well, let's jump over to James. James, what is your ultimate band?
SPEAKER_02So I went with a theme for my members. Uh, they are all past, uh, and that was probably the easiest way I could put together a band.
SPEAKER_05I was like, okay, that's a good way to get them to get along.
SPEAKER_02That's right. No, I was like, okay, it's easiest if I just pick people who are not with us anymore. So, on drums, the Rev from Avenge Sevenfold. On bass, Cliff Burton from Metallica, okay, on guitar, Randy Rhodes from Ozzy, on Keys, me. Okay. You're still live. And our and our lead vocalist, Ronnie James Dio.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Well, that's that's an interesting lineup you've got there.
SPEAKER_02And like this could be a possible supergroup. Like, if all of them were still around besides me. This could be possible.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_02It's it's almost like a damn Yankees type of situation. Or who's the the Kings of Chaos where they all just rotate members? Uh obviously be playing, they'd be playing heavy rock. Uh stuff kind of similar. I mean, the odd one out's the Rev. Yeah. But the Rev is just such a good drummer. Like, he recorded the whole first Avenged Zenfold album in one take. Just because he he he challenged himself to do it. Uh so that's their sound. Uh it'd be festivals, arenas, stuff like Ozfest, big arena shows. Uh the band name.
SPEAKER_03I know what the band name is. It's the day. I'm trying to well, here's the thing. I'm really trying to not make a dark joke.
SPEAKER_02I'm really trying. Because every single one of them died. I didn't realize this. Every single one of them, but the rev died in some type of crash. So I'm not gonna go down the dark road. The rev died of drugs. Well, it was a prescription overdose with alcohol. So what band name can we do? Thrill to live. There we go. Thrill to live.
SPEAKER_04That's counterintuitive with a bunch of dead guys. Crashed his druggie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Crashed his drugie. I've tried to not be dark, Randy. I didn't say that.
SPEAKER_05I've got a lot of jokes that I'm holding in right now. Well, it looks like that Grateful Dead video over that.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh. Yeah. Yeah, uh, that was uh touch of gray.
SPEAKER_02Touch of gray. Yeah. What breaks this band up, death, but more specifically about their death, they all get into a limo who just so happens to be a transformer. And it transformed with all of them inside. So we could go with the fiction route.
SPEAKER_04And the driver was the the new angel of death, um Chuck Norse.
SPEAKER_02No, John Favreau. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Okay. All right, uh, Chris, how about you? What is your ultimate band? I know you've done a little you've done a little something interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so now, of course, uh, I won't be playing in this band. Um I'll be more um on the engineering side of the band. But it consists of on lead vocals, Chris Cornell, lead guitar, slash, nice, rhythm guitar, James Hetfield.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04What? What?
SPEAKER_02And you put Lars in this too. No. I'm walking off.
SPEAKER_01Bass, Flea.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_01Drums, Dave Growe, and keys, Trent Reznor.
SPEAKER_03Oh wow.
SPEAKER_01That is an interesting lineup.
SPEAKER_03So far, that's my favorite band. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Their name is Iron Vultures.
SPEAKER_03Iron Vultures.
SPEAKER_01Grunge metal funk with a little bit of industrial sound. Okay. Obviously. Because you you get a lot of your little funk and your uh blues from Slash and Flea. Of course, you get your metal from James.
SPEAKER_03Uh Flea play the trumpet too while he's at it.
SPEAKER_01That'd actually be kind of cool.
SPEAKER_04He did that on Fallon the other night.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know that. So I did some I I did something. I I plugged this into chat a GPT to come up with an album per se.
SPEAKER_03It's a good one too.
SPEAKER_02Like the artwork.
SPEAKER_01Artwork, yeah, as well. Oh, okay. Uh so their breakthrough album for the super group is Ashes and Echoes.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01One of their songs is called Velvet Ashes.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01And one of the verses.
SPEAKER_05Did you have AI recorded?
SPEAKER_01I wish I could have that would be awesome. That's a premium feature. Oh, yeah, yeah. You gotta pay it. Um one of the verses in this song is cold wind crawling through an open door, whispers uh things I can't ignore, every word like a rusted chain, pulling me down back again.
SPEAKER_04Back again.
SPEAKER_01Sounds like a Chris Cornell wrote.
SPEAKER_05That would be James Hatfield singing that part. Back again.
SPEAKER_03I know we're not sure about AI, but I would love to hear this.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think you need to work on that, Chris, and make present that maybe.
SPEAKER_01I have to find one that that will do that.
SPEAKER_04So you're and you're you said your genre would be like uh hard rock grunge metal. Okay, and what what are you playing? What uh venues are you playing?
SPEAKER_01They probably play mostly a lot of uh arena.
SPEAKER_04Okay. And now an important question. Why would they break up?
SPEAKER_01Well drugs.
SPEAKER_04I mean that's a tell as old as time.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you got Slash, James Hetfield, Flea.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Slash has never done a drug, a damn head.
SPEAKER_04Nowadays they'd probably overdose on coffee or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. The global ambassador of Gibbs and guitars would never.
SPEAKER_03Right. Those little guys are trying to stay clean nowadays, but yeah. They also say they all get back together.
SPEAKER_01Bad habits, so James, they also said they would never uh take his hat off, but he did.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he did in the November Rain video. He did. I don't know they had a choice. I think I might have blown off. Might have. All right. Um, I think I'll do I'll go next. I'll leave Ryan to go last. Um, my ultimate band, the uh the lineup consists of me, lead singer, on rhythm guitar, Mike Campbell, uh, from uh uh Tom Petty's band. You know, fun fact, he wrote Don Henley's big hit, Boys of Summer.
SPEAKER_02I heard that somewhere.
SPEAKER_04He presented that to Tom Petty and said, eh, not our thing. Don Henley made it a hit. Uh lead guitar, Joe Walsh. Because he's just gonna be a ball to hang around. Uh on bass, Leland Sklar. Oh. Love me some Leland Sklar. Yeah. Uh on Keys, Bennmont Tinch. Another from Tom Petty's band. He played Keys and Oregon and all that and Tom Petty stuff. Uh actually on organ is uh Kofi Burbridge. He plays uh um organ right now for the uh Tedesky Trucks band. He was in the Derrick Trucks band. And then on drums, Kenny Arnoff. He's played with everybody else, so he might as well play with me. So uh that would be that would be my lineup.
SPEAKER_05I was gonna say there we go.
SPEAKER_04Got him.
SPEAKER_05Finally, it's not me.
SPEAKER_04Uh we would play rock pop Americana style music. Uh, probably be most likely to find us in theaters and at festivals. Um, and we would end up breaking up because of Lee Sklar's political views. If you've ever delved into you know his socials and stuff like that. He's a very politically minded fellow. The name of the band would be a band name that my dad told me a long time ago. He said, if I ever got to pick a band name, ever put a band together that I could name the band, it would be Wayward Nickel. So just stealing that from my dad. So that is my bunch. Uh that leaves you, Ryan. It's your ultimate band.
SPEAKER_05All right. On lead guitar, I'll have uh Dean DeLeo from Stone Table Pilots. Yeah, and then he would be lost without his brothers, so we'll bring him along on bass.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05And then the second guitar player would be Mike McCready from Pearl Jam.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05I don't know if you can see the direction we're heading here. Uh-huh. And then my drummer would be not me, but the guy I want to hang out with, so I gotta include him, Chad Smith.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05So I'm gonna have more of a manager production type role in this. Okay, and then our front man would be uh Dave Grohl.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_05So, Chris, I'm taking a couple of your band members because I'm also taking on lead bass flea. On lead base.
SPEAKER_04On lead bass. Uh that's pretty good. And actually, he could probably play just play trumpet in the band. You know, he could. He does have those skills. All right, what kind of music? Obviously, grind rock.
SPEAKER_05Well, like Zach Topp brought back 90s country. We're gonna bring back 90s rock.
SPEAKER_04Okay, good deal. Yeah, yeah. And where of course where would we find you?
SPEAKER_05Bars.
SPEAKER_04Barsy ticket. That's an easy ticket.
SPEAKER_05I I'd imagine that that uh lineup would be at arenas and festivals and uh probably headlining Woodstock 29.
SPEAKER_04Woodstock 29. Okay, now before I ask you why the band broke up, what is the name of the band that broke up?
SPEAKER_05Red Hot Fighter Pilots.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so what is the demise of the Red Hot Fighter Pilots?
SPEAKER_05We had a lot of problems going on. Flea and Chad Smith missed the chili peppers. Plus, me and Dave Grohl keep chiming in on Chad Smith's drumming because we're both drummers and we've got an opinion, and he doesn't like that. And then I keep calling him Will. He really hates that. Mike McCready's grown tired of the discussion of the importance of lyrical content due to being able to actually understand the lyrics, and he keeps suggesting just sounds. Robert DeLo is tired of me making the joke that he's getting old and starting to look more like Robert De Niro. And then finally, the end came with Dean DeLeo. He's grown a love for making sock puppets, and he finds out that Flea's been wearing his sock puppet collection. Only after Fully asked him to pet Mr. Wiggles.
SPEAKER_04Lot of stuff going on inside the Red Hot Fighter Pets.
SPEAKER_05Catch us on VH1 behind the music.
SPEAKER_03All right, I got some awards to give out. That was pretty good, guys. Okay. Best band. It's a tie between uh pickup.
SPEAKER_04Definitely Ryan. Uh uh, you want uh start that over, Rand. The CIA. CIA got you.
SPEAKER_03It gets me. Okay, I'm back. All right. Awards. Awards go to Best Band, you got me? Yeah. Best band. Best band. Well, it's a tie between Russ and Chris.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_03Uh Best Breakup. Definitely Ryan. Originality goes to James. I mean, that's that's quite the eclectic group you got there.
SPEAKER_04That's cool. All right.
SPEAKER_03Is that all the awards? That's it. All right.
SPEAKER_04That was that was fun. That was to me personally, one of the more, you know, fun sit down by yourself, kind of make the wheels turn there. And you kind of get a a bit of our personalities through that band that we created. So I went 30 different directions too.
SPEAKER_05I wanted at first I was like, hey, I'm gonna take the best musicians. And then I I the second question came.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_05With what kind of music? And you're like, oh, how are all these guys gonna gel together?
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh. Yeah. That's and that's what you do. You kind of take what you know from them, uh, and you kind of decide, well, we would be we were in a band together, we'd probably be playing this kind of music. All right, at this point, this is where the show goes off the rails from what you're used to hearing from the Songs of FM cast. Uh, we're gonna take a turn from music and pop culture. I guess it's still kind of pop culture. Um, and we're gonna talk about food for the next two segments. So uh segment number two, Ryan. What have you got for us there?
SPEAKER_05All right. I don't know about you guys, but I'm hungry. Not just regular hungry. I'm nostalgic hungry.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_05Let's go back to the day of the side-by-side jukebox and the cigarette machine. The days when families spent more time in the dining area than the drive-thru. The days when we begged for a couple quarters after we finished eating to play arcade games adjacent to the cigarette machine. Welcome to the second segment. I'm hungry. We'll each give one menu item or a restaurant that we would bring back, discuss if it was really as good as we remember, and debate if a return would be warranted or if it's gone for a reason.
SPEAKER_04Sounds like everything you just explained could have happened uh right at our ad at the Pizza Hut.
SPEAKER_05Uh-huh. It could happen. Yep.
SPEAKER_03James, are you going to be able to participate? Because all your restaurants that you grew up in are probably still around.
SPEAKER_05I'm trying to think. There's probably one that's gone out. You should let me go first so no one can take it. Absolutely so no one can take it. You can go first because we're all gonna laugh with you.
SPEAKER_02Not at you. This restaurant was a local favorite of many, many people. They had the best hot fudge cake, hot fudge sun down. You already know what it is.
SPEAKER_01I hate him already.
SPEAKER_02As well as my French toast as well. But my favorite dish was their grilled barbecue chicken breast that was cut butterfly style, and it had the best barbecue sauce. I'm talking about Prestonsburg's own Jerry's. Jerry's rest. There is one Jerry's that remained.
SPEAKER_01It's a Prestonsburg owned.
SPEAKER_02There is. I miss Doris. Doris had the big red box dye, curly hair, the big pearly earrings. Uh-huh. Bring you around to Dr. Pepper with the uh Raptor Nugget Ice. Oh that's that's good stuff.
SPEAKER_04You know, I talked to Chris about this. We were conversating about it.
SPEAKER_02Um she'd be like, uh, do y'all want dessert first? Yeah, we want dessert first. We'd get her a hot fudge Sunday before our entrepreneurs.
SPEAKER_04Oh, we we were talking about it, and and it's it wasn't a world breaker thing, but man, their spaghetti was good.
SPEAKER_05I you know, I was just getting ready to say, I don't remember going to Jerry's a lot, but I remember Justin's family taking me there one time and having the spaghetti. I was gonna ask, is that Jerry's that okay, yeah, and the best coleslaw?
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. Yes, their coleslaw, especially it's the best coleslaw to go with their little Lance crackers.
SPEAKER_04Oh hey, James got real passionate about that.
SPEAKER_05Yes, uh coleslaw. I'm projecting that from here to the end will be the most passionate conversations we have.
SPEAKER_04Probably I would dare to say you're you are correct.
SPEAKER_02But that's that's that's my pick. I would do anything for Jerry's to come back to Prestonsburg.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_05All right, Russ. I'm just gonna go around my screen.
SPEAKER_04I was torn between bringing back two restaurants, so I'll just go with one in case anybody else mentions the one I'm gonna leave off. But if you don't, I'm gonna mention it. Um mine would be Quisnos. I loved Quisnos subs.
SPEAKER_05You know, I never had Quisnos. I always walked by it. I know they had it in Florence Mall, and I would see it and I would debate it.
SPEAKER_04Their prime rib sandwich is the best sandwich I've ever eaten in my life. I loved their prime rib sandwich. Uh whatever sauce they had on it, I mean, it was the best sandwich that any sub place has made. Now I love Jersey Mike's right now. And Jersey Mike's number 13 is very hard to beat. And it's it's an Italian sub. But their uh prime rib sandwich at Quiznos was unreal.
SPEAKER_05Have you ever had the Chipotle Chipotle steak at Jersey Mike's?
SPEAKER_04I have not. I have only had I have only had the number 13 there. I can't get away from it. It's the Italian, and they they put that uh that um cherry pepper relish on it.
SPEAKER_05And I mean how's which one compare to Jimmy John's Ren? Quisnos or Jersey Mike's?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. That's why whatever Quisnos, like, how does that compare to Jimmy John's? That's what my question was.
SPEAKER_04Uh Jimmy John's is better sandwich place overall, but that one sandwich is the reason I would bring back that entire chain for that one sandwich. Because it was, I mean, it was out of this world. They had caramelized onions on it.
SPEAKER_05I mean, it was yeah, I grew up only knowing Subway, and now I have a Jimmy Johns by my office that I went to all the time until Jersey Mike's open, and now I'm Jersey Mike's.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, how about firehouse subs? I love firehouse. I've never had firehouse.
SPEAKER_05So firehouse is great, it's a whole different ball game.
SPEAKER_02But it's like a lot of hot sandwiches there, right?
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02Is it hot sandwiches? Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I've only had hot sandwiches there.
SPEAKER_02How does it compare to Penn Station?
SPEAKER_05Completely different. Yeah. I love I love Penn Station. If you if I have to pick one of all of those, it'd be Penn Station, but they're all different to me. Penn Station, I think Siszy mics are similar.
SPEAKER_04I have only eaten one sandwich ever at Penn Station. It was really good. JJ, our former keyboard player, uh told me about it. It was the um chicken teriyaki sub from uh I haven't had that there. That that it's it's a great sandwich, but their fries are good too, but still I think sandwich sandwich quality is I've been going to Penn Station for 25 years and I've only had one sandwich. Oh yeah?
SPEAKER_02The chicken farming cheesesteak.
SPEAKER_04Oh wow.
SPEAKER_02Now they got a killer Rubin, too.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, now I'm a Ruben dude. I like a Ruben.
SPEAKER_02Arby's has a good Rubin. They do. Now with Penn Station, you gotta take out a second mortgage. Right.
SPEAKER_05That's another big thing. A little secret, hopefully nobody's listening. That's my work expense lunches sometimes. Nice. Me and Andrew have a meeting.
SPEAKER_04All right.
SPEAKER_05Okay, Ren. I'm gonna preface this with saying Ren's probably the least qualified on the on the panel today for obvious reasons. But go ahead.
SPEAKER_03You never know. I got a couple items I miss. A couple items I miss, guys. McDonald's pizza, airy crust, personal pan size. So good. I mean it's McDonald's.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I know James doesn't know McDonald's had a pizza. No, there's no idea.
SPEAKER_03Pizza, super size fry. Get lodged right here. Get in my belly. Then the other thing is the Wendy's hot bar or the super bar.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Man, nostalgia, and the yellow cups. And I don't know if that was on the bar, but honorable mention would be the breadsticks they had, the garlic breadsticks. I don't remember breadsticks. I got a bacon cheeseburger, four-piece snuck, four-piece nuggets, fry, and a couple of those breadsticks.
SPEAKER_04That bar high school bowls. That bar, making a taco salad from that bar. Yeah. With that Wendy's chili.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I'm getting chills.
SPEAKER_03That's it.
SPEAKER_05You know, the second part of this was uh is it as good as you remember and should we bring it back? And I think by the description of all three of you are all they're definitely gonna bring it back in a heartbeat. Chris, what do you got?
SPEAKER_01Well, I got a few, but James actually took the main one that I had. That's why I went first. You know, my uncle, my there's a burger that was named after my uncle, the Jay the J-Boy. From there. But anyway. There goes a J-boy. So he hated naked. His name was Julius. Anyway. So, you know, we all love Arby's. But what about Rax?
SPEAKER_02I knew it. I knew it.
SPEAKER_01I missed Rax. Rax was good. Yeah, to me. Except for the one call run. I mean, that there was certain issues with that. But you know, you had the bar, it was just it was great.
SPEAKER_02It was the mushroom and festival's awesome there. Yeah, yeah, yeah. They had the best curly fries.
SPEAKER_04Thinking back, and there's there's one that still exists in Harlan. So I had it about a year ago.
SPEAKER_05Do they have Salabar? No.
SPEAKER_04So it it is what you would expect now that Rax Rax has been gone and then has been kindly filled, uh, the void has been filled with Arby's because they're very similar. Um it's like a hate me if you want to, but it's kind of a Timu version of Arby's. I mean they're now yeah, it's not like it used to be. The roast be roast beef sandwich was still good, and Megan got exactly what Rennie said. I I'm not a mushroom guy, but uh that's what she wanted. She loved mushroom Swiss from there.
SPEAKER_05Rex was the first place that I learned about pepperoni and a salad. I didn't know that was an option. It completely opened up my my eyes to salad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, if it's not gonna taste like it did back in the day, we we should just not bring it back. There's one in the iron tins a little sus, too.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, there is one there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we've had a conversation about that.
SPEAKER_01Rotar. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. It's because we're talking about food. He's uh he's all worked up.
SPEAKER_05All right, I guess that leaves me. Yeah. So I'm I'm gonna go through this little thing I wrote, which mentions a few of what you guys mentioned. Uh, it was tough for me. I thought about racks and their salad bar. My mom would take me shopping. We lived in Indianapolis, and we'd always go to Rax for uh lunch, and that's where I learned about pepperoni and salad. Uh, I thought about Pizza Hut buffet and salad bar because the bacon that wasn't bacon was great. And then you'd watch a new pizza be brought out, and it was attacked like piranhas when an animal steps in the river. Then there was the Shonys and the seafood buffet.
SPEAKER_06Oh yes.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, my dad and my uncle Freddie loved to go there. And then afterwards, it was a joy for me to watch them how much pain and agony they were in and the noises they made. They looked nine months pregnant. Then there's the KFC chicken littles. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04Stop and shop still has those.
SPEAKER_05So they had them at South Floyd for breakfast. Yeah, it's the last time I remember having them. Sure, they're still on the menu now, but I don't want chicken breasts cutting to strips. I want whatever was pressed into those little patties.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_05The Wendy's Taco Bar. And I had had uh anybody remember that. Obviously, everybody remembers that because we've already talked about the thing I miss most that's recent is the bacon ranch salad at McDonald's.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they don't have any salads anymore.
SPEAKER_05No, it went away at COVID. COVID, they shrunk their menu down, never brought it back. That chicken ranch. Well, and you when I say it, it sounds ridiculous because it's a salad, and you're like, Oh, I'm eating healthy, but you're like, Yeah, give me that chicken ranch crispy 1500 calories, yeah.
SPEAKER_04$17 for a salad and 20 cents for a hamburger. So with all of those had that one.
SPEAKER_05No, oh, that one was good. Do you remember the shakers? Yeah, the shakers. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Now the Southwest chicken salad I had, it was great. Had the roasted corn in it. Oh.
SPEAKER_05So once I find something I like, I go back to it. And it was the bacon ranch salad for me. But out of all those, I'm not going with any of them. I'm gonna go with my name's namesake, uh, Ryan Steakhouse.
SPEAKER_04Oh that's a good one. That was Golden Corral before Golden Corral.
SPEAKER_05So when I when I was uh younger, we would go to Northern Ohio and visit my family, and I'm pretty sure I call it my namesake because when I first saw it, I was like, this restaurant's named after me. And really, in reality, there's a good chance that I'm named after it. And it it was the place that we always went. Um, and I don't like buffets now.
SPEAKER_04Uh depends.
SPEAKER_05I'm still a sucker for a salad bar.
SPEAKER_04Oh, salad bar is my jam. Ruby Tuesdays has got a pretty good salad bar if you can find a Ruby Tuesdays. Uh, and then there's uh the Cattleman's Cattleman's got a good one now. Cattleman's okay.
SPEAKER_05We we have to go to Frankfurt tomorrow night to Dick's and Cattleman's is beside of it. I'm gonna try to use that as an excuse. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I have to go to Frankfurt training a lot in Cattleman's is the only place I'll go.
SPEAKER_05You go there at lunch, uh, and you can get the salad bar for like eight bucks. Yeah, closest. Potato salad, broccoli salad, it's good.
SPEAKER_04Closest, really good salad bar to here is a pine mountain grill. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Over in Whitefield. That's a good one. You haven't had honey bees in Paintsville then. They have a really good sour, they have a really good salad bar in Paintsville. Yep, it's inside the Ramada.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Honey bees, it's great.
SPEAKER_05We actually have a new truck stop off the bluegrass parkway, and I haven't been to the salad bar. I've been in there to get drinks and stuff, get gas, and their salad bar looks great. And I keep meaning to go up and go up there at lunch one day and try it out.
SPEAKER_04That that combination of words is way suspect. Yeah, yeah, but this part stop salad bar.
SPEAKER_05They also have great Indian foods, what I've heard.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you really you danger is your middle name. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_05So was it really good at the time? It absolutely was. Steak was a big deal for us, and we didn't have it much. So to be able to go there and get steak, and then you had all the other stuff, I could get steak and fried chicken and some shrimp. Hey. Should it come back? Probably not. We have golden corral and I don't go there now. No. Not really.
SPEAKER_04I I I really I ate there maybe once. Now, I uh we when we would go to Winchester where my aunt lived, we'd we'd hit the Golden Corral up there.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was telling somebody when I was in Floyd County, everybody stopped in Winchester at Golden Corral. And then when I moved to Cincinnati, whenever my parents would come up, that was where we ate at was Golden Corral. When we told Texas Roadhouse opened.
SPEAKER_04When we lived in Louisville, it was a once-a-week thing, and we just totally looked forward to it. We would go to Sizzler. Sizzler was the bond. Here, the first steakhouse I ever remember going to was Western Sizzlin.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I thought it was gonna be Ponderosa.
SPEAKER_04Western Sislin where the uh where the uh holiday express is in Pikeville right now.
SPEAKER_01Where the blood bank is.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Is Ponderosa still open in Paintsville?
SPEAKER_04No, it's a Mexican restaurant now. My my other, I guess you would call it my honorable mention, since nobody mentioned it, was Taco Tico.
SPEAKER_05Oh, there is a Taco Tico about, I don't know, eight minutes from my office. Right.
SPEAKER_04It's the last one that's in existence in Lexington. They're taco burgers out of this world.
SPEAKER_03Out of this world. It's rough. I first discovered uh double decker tacos. Those are amazing.
SPEAKER_04And in Louisville, we used to eat at a sit-down Mexican joint that had a buffet. Can you imagine all of that kind of food at a buffet? Oh, we we took Tumbleweed. Tumbleweed Mexican restaurant.
SPEAKER_05We had there's a Mexican restaurant in Lexington that has a buffet, and we had never been, somebody mentioned it. We had a new guy start at work and we took him there for his first day for lunch, and he called the next morning and uh put in his resignation.
SPEAKER_04Well, okay, so I'm gonna blow your minds then. El Azul Grande. That is a almost kind of like a chain around here of Mexican restaurants. There's one in Pikeville, one in Prestonsburg.
SPEAKER_05Was that the first one in Pikeville beside the Mark III?
SPEAKER_04Prestonsburg's the first one I remember.
SPEAKER_05What's beside the Mark III bowling, Alley?
SPEAKER_04Uh that used to be where Wendy's is now. Are you sure?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Because the first one I remember eating at when we moved back here was with Jamie at the one in Prestonsburg. And then I remember eating at the one in Pikeville. But anyways, it's Prestonburg. Yeah, it's it's kind of like a little uh little Mexican chain around here. But when they put one in Hazard, they put one over there, you know where the Walmart is, that red light. Well, if you're going towards Hazard and you stop at that red light, you know, you turn right to go to Walmart, you turn left, you go down to that other little shopping center down there where there's a Dodge dealership down there, too. That's where they put their Elisville Grande. They had an all-you-can-eat buffet.
SPEAKER_03Goodness.
SPEAKER_04They had an entire little trough trough of the cheese dip and the chicken and the peppers and onions and the steak and the beans and the ri. I mean, it was how in the world are these people in business? They can't be making money. And then shortly after that, they stopped doing it.
SPEAKER_05Because they were like, we're not making anybody.
SPEAKER_02Now, have you all had Takira Los Lales in Paintsville? It's right beside Silverspoon on Broadway.
SPEAKER_04Only one I've eaten there is with the Rennie. It's Trace Samano's Takira Los Lalies.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was. But no, Takira Los Lales puts every Mexican restaurant around here to shame. Now I didn't know chicken and steak could be so tender. And their sauce is the best.
SPEAKER_04I'll have to tell you. The wheelwright Mexican restaurant.
SPEAKER_02Now I've heard it.
SPEAKER_04Top notch was still open. No, no, but it's going to be back in November. He's coming back in November.
SPEAKER_01But there are other places open.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there are the places open over to Shelby.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. Yeah. Around the curve there.
SPEAKER_01They're on Caney Highway.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's on Caney Highway.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He went over there to help his brother. His brother had that restaurant, and uh he went over there to help his brother out a little bit. But he's coming back to Wheelwright in November, and we're probably going to have a like a day of celebration for our friend.
SPEAKER_05I think we should probably have the end of the year Songs of FM meeting there. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03There we go. How about right now? I'm starving.
SPEAKER_02Hey, I've got one honorable mention that none of us mentioned. Okay. The buffet at KFC.
SPEAKER_05Oh that was almost my my pick over Ryan Steakhouse, the buffet. Yeah. I like I like the what's it called? Is it extra crispy? And I like the original. And I didn't have to pick.
SPEAKER_03What did you say, Ren? That's right. I know Lee's famous recipe did, but I don't remember. Wait a minute. I faintly remember Prestonberg having one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yep, Prestonberg had one.
SPEAKER_03I had one.
SPEAKER_04I mean, they just brought up one too, right there. Lee's famous recipe. There's one in the middle of the store. We still have a we have a Lee's.
SPEAKER_05I think it has it had a buffet up until COVID. I think COVID killed that one too.
SPEAKER_04Megan liked the chicken livers there. She didn't eat chicken livers at all. And she's like, I'd love to go to Leeds and get some chicken livers. I'm like, well, who are you?
SPEAKER_05I like chicken gizzards from there, and I don't know why.
SPEAKER_04What's a new thing?
SPEAKER_05It's a weird thing. Like a chicken gizzard's like really tough. The liver is like, yeah. I don't think nothing.
SPEAKER_04Well, I mean, I can can't say from there, but the chicken livers I have eaten. It's probably the blood. Oh, chicken livers.
SPEAKER_05That's probably the chemicals that it takes out of the case.
SPEAKER_01I have a honorable mention that nobody's mentioned. Okay. What about a taco place that sold a cheeseburger? Taco Bell.
SPEAKER_04I don't remember that. I I don't remember. I remember when you talk about tacos and burgers, taco tacos.
SPEAKER_01It was from around 65 to the mid-90s. They sold a burger.
SPEAKER_05I never knew. So like for 30 years they sold a burger?
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_05She says 65. Did anybody order it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Or what the I don't believe you. Everybody. We'll find out next week.
SPEAKER_04Everybody on this panel, raise your hand if you knew about andor had a burger from Taco Bell.
SPEAKER_01I knew about it, but never had it. I saw it, but never would get it.
SPEAKER_02You just made that up. You dreamt it. It's not real.
SPEAKER_03All right, here's another. Who's had a chicken fajita from McDonald's? I have.
SPEAKER_05I've seen them. All right, great.
SPEAKER_04That's because not a lot of people know that one. I lived in I lived in Louisville in the 90s, when high school in the 90s. Uh and we I have to tell this story every time when we talk about McDonald's in particular. Uh, we'd just finished band practice and we stopped at McDonald's to grab something to eat on the way home. And I and I guess it was partially my fault because I went up to order and she asked me what I wanted, and I said, I'll take a couple hamburgers with cheese. So there's strike one. I should have just said cheeseburger. Well, it's like it locked her brain up completely, and she stared at the screen. And she said, um hamburgers with cheese. Uh um uh hey, can you come over here and show me how to do this? And and finally I just said, Um, I guess it'd be a cheeseburger. She's oh, you're right. You right. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Oh, good.
SPEAKER_04All right.
SPEAKER_01Well that woman at burger can't go on. You mean the Jalapano burger? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We should have put a time limit on this segment. Uh I mean, we're gonna go forever.
SPEAKER_04That's what I was gonna say. Is everybody done with their honorable mentions? Everybody good? We're gonna wrap up segment two right here, or you want to throw something in last? I'm done. I'm ready to eat. Okay. Amen. All right, that was the end of segment number two titled I'm hungry. And now, Reynold, can you please tell us what we're doing for segment number three?
SPEAKER_03Well, the bracket is back. Oh boy. This time it's the tournament food challenge thingy majigger. All right, let's go through the seatings real quick. Let me explain this logic here. So we have four tiers, okay? Uh the first tier is the heavy hitters.
SPEAKER_04Wow, Ryan is locked in. I just want to point that out. Ryan has turned his hat around. He is locked in for the city.
SPEAKER_03Oh, he is business. All right, we've got tier one. We've we've got the the big brands, the the top sellers, the Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Wendy's, Taco Bell. Okay. Then we have tier two, strong contenders, you know, your Burger King, Subway, Arby's, KFC. Tier three is modern favorites, uh, fast casual. Some consider them cult followings, Chipotle, Five Guys, Zach Spees, Raised Canes. And the Tier Four is a combination of wildcard, regional, nostalgia picks, Hardy's, Little Caesars, Dairy Queen, Cookout. Okay, cool. So Ryan's standing up. I'm about to do the same, honestly. The early game's actually gonna be the two seed. So let's start down here, the cookout and McDonald's, okay. Man, that's a tough matchup.
SPEAKER_05That's easy for me. Is it easy for me? I don't like either one of them. I feel like McDonald's is the North Carolina Kentucky of this tournament. They're getting a two seed because of their name, not because they're property. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_03Like what?
SPEAKER_04Like uh Gonzaga and so uh we went to Ryan's last week.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_04Chris and I. And on the way home, we stopped in Winchester and we ate at cookout.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's a great cookout too. I'm gonna go ahead and put it.
SPEAKER_04I just I am a McDonald's is your kind of every it's everywhere, so you've probably eaten that more than you've eaten any other place. But I like cookout better. And it's affordable.
SPEAKER_01Yes, very affordable.
SPEAKER_04So affordable.
SPEAKER_02Hey, I paid I paid for our food as a side.
SPEAKER_04I paid for our food, and we got like three or four different uh uh things apiece. It's amazing. It's 20 bucks. Yeah. The two weeks. So cookout for me.
SPEAKER_02Yes, cheer wine too. Don't forget the cheer out there. That's it, cheer wine. Heck yeah. Cookout, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna go cookout. Oh, the biggest I'm not a big fan of cookout, but there are a few things there that I am a fan of.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they're cajun chicken sandwich.
SPEAKER_01See, see, I like cookout because it's like it's like you're actually at a cookout in some ways in the like your Uncle Joe's out back on the grill.
SPEAKER_05Is it like the American version of the hibachi?
SPEAKER_01No, no, that would be cool. But I'm cooking all the way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Great. Clean sweep. Love to see it. Love to see it, guys. That's uh Kansas, you're out. North Carolina, you're out.
SPEAKER_04That's a good good analogy right there. It's Bill's self and his McDonald's.
SPEAKER_03Let's work our way up. What what do you say? What do you say? Okay. We got Arby's and five guys. That's gonna be good. We just gave Burger some love. Yeah. Are we gonna continue to do that?
SPEAKER_04Well, I consider I'd have to finance five guys, I'm gonna go with Arby's. Oh I like five guys.
SPEAKER_02They're both like up there, yes, but like the variety with Arby's. Yeah like they've got a great Ruben, they've got a uh Turkey Bay French dip. Have you ever had Arby's?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they got Euros.
SPEAKER_02I haven't had it. I've heard it's great.
SPEAKER_04What'd you say, Ryan? They have ever had Arby's one.
SPEAKER_02Burger.
SPEAKER_04No, I haven't had it. I had it last year. It was good. Ryan's gobbler. And Arby's had the only really legitimately hot chicken sandwich that was, you know, uh these places like we're ghost pepper chicken, this, ghost pepper chicken that. Theirs was the only one that was really hot. Everybody else's was like, what is this?
SPEAKER_02So did you all get to try the gobbler from Arby's? Yes. Oh my gosh. Yeah, it was incredible.
SPEAKER_04It was, I will say it was unique. I liked it, but I'm not I'm not there with you, but I liked it. The cranberry railish was I'm gonna go five guys.
SPEAKER_05I really like their burger, the occasion fries. And one thing, Russ, you can an order of fries is so big they really you can split it. Yeah, yeah, small fry, you can feed four people.
SPEAKER_04I think they do that to make you feel better about paying $75 for two people to eat there.
SPEAKER_05That's another uh that's another when we're out in the field, we'll stop there and expense that one.
SPEAKER_01I mean, they have great burgers, great service. Arby's great too. That's the problem.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but they got loan officers. Either one of them could have defeated some of these others.
SPEAKER_04They have loan officers on premise.
SPEAKER_02I'm going Arby's.
SPEAKER_01I mean, because I I I love Five Guys Fries, I love the burgers. I mean, Arby's though, I mean my the only thing I really get there is the uh the turkey beckon ranch. It's a great sandwich, and it's awesome. I love everything there.
SPEAKER_04If you haven't at Arby's, try the jalapeno poppers with that with that bronco berry sauce, the savory and the sweet.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, blessing the Lord.
SPEAKER_01I won't go with five guys. The fries just you would. Oh, who is it?
SPEAKER_05Is this Ren? Does it come down to Ren?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Here's my deal with Arby's.
SPEAKER_03Here's my deal with Arby's. They're not the same. Not all Arby's are the same. No, they're not. Does anybody realize painful Arby's at one time was way different than the other Arby's? I mean, they have the baked Arby's there is around here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03They have baked potatoes and they had home style fries. Now, thank goodness they still have baked potatoes, but they got rid of their home style fries to get with the corporate layout of the whole curly fry and the crinkle cut now. I love Arby's. So you give me five days five guys all day long because fill that bag up full of fries, Bubby.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_03Really uh that's why you're in line. Yeah. Sorry. I love Arby's, but you know, you just gotta go with your your gut there, and I just want to win with it. Okay, we got Zaxby's and Subway now. Moving on. This is a hard matchup.
SPEAKER_04Uh well, just by default for me, because I've never had Zaxby's, I I have to default and go with Subway again.
SPEAKER_03You know, it is amazing to me. Something I I'm a Zaxby's fan. I'm probably in the cult. That's is that a cult ranking?
SPEAKER_05I think it probably.
SPEAKER_03Probably. Yeah. It's that's me. I'm in the cult of Zaxby's. Because I used to live in Lexton and that was a place I always went.
SPEAKER_05Was that raising canes? Probably.
SPEAKER_03You know, and I tried raising crank canes, and I just preferred Zaxby's. There's something about the Zaxby sauce and and the flavor of the uh the crust of the chicken, the breading of the chicken. And uh I mean that's that's why I gotta go with because my goodness. It's oh what's amazing to me is how much I can love something, and I know there's there's a cult following, and then Russ, you have no idea. No, it's amazing. That whole two different worlds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. After you try a different sub shop than Subway, you realize Subway sucks.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I absolutely I agree with that wholeheartedly. I'm going Zachsby's 100%. By by default, I have to go Subway here.
SPEAKER_01You know, the thing is, you know, with uh with Subway, I mean, we we we we all have had Subway many times. We don't have a Zaxby's around here. I've had Zach Spee's you know, about ten times or so. And it's the consistency is not there, but I will say it's still good. And it's better than Subway.
SPEAKER_03It's good. Fry seasoning.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's and it and it it is better than Subway.
SPEAKER_05Man, I really thought I was gonna be the tiebreaker here. Uh I'm going Zagsby's too. I had Subway last night and I'll still take Zagsby's any day. And it's not as good as raising canes.
SPEAKER_02I need to get it. Zagsby's not as good as raising canes. Lord no. We'll we'll talk about that when we get to it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03My only experience with raising canes was one time in Lexton right off uh yeah, the main drag there. Hamburg area. Yeah. Winchester Road.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_03And it just wasn't hitting. So I need to.
SPEAKER_05My wife works by that one, and she has to bring the kids raising canes every once in a while because Mason's a big fan of the case.
SPEAKER_04The best one in Lexton out there on uh news circle. No, Nixville.
SPEAKER_03Oh big bacon classic. Dave's classic bacon for me, bowls.
SPEAKER_05For me, this is a battle of the ones that don't belong. Baconator for Chris.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I mean, he is the baconator.
SPEAKER_01Listen, if if I want heartburn, I'll have little Caesars.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01If I want a fresh, an actual fresh burger, I'll go to Wendy's.
SPEAKER_03I want to play Call of Duty all night, I'll get Lil Caesars.
SPEAKER_04I personally watch that man ingest at least 77 bacon oakers. Right on. I'll have to go Wendy's too. You give me some of the spicy chicken sandwich and maybe a couple of the uh junior bacon cheese burgers.
SPEAKER_01Your spicy nuggets are good too.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03What's the final thing?
SPEAKER_04And the chili.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_02The thing with Wendy's is that their seasonal stuff sucks. Like, I I'm big, I love seasonal stuff. I love it when they do it.
SPEAKER_04At Wednesday, Frosty was the bum. Yeah, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Bloody. I just I don't know. It's just it's bland to me. I would rather have a Dairy Queen burger than a Wendy's burger. Okay. But Little Caesar's crazy bread is crack. I agree with that. Actually, it used to be. Now not so much.
SPEAKER_01Or zesty Italian is good.
SPEAKER_02Now the crazy puffs are great too. I'm going Little Caesars.
SPEAKER_05I did try the Crazy Puffs not long. Those are pretty good, but I'm gonna go because I just thought about it. The Wendy's chili.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Just reconstituted burgers.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. And I'll take it all day. Yes, sir. That and the chicken, was it honey, honey butter chicken biscuit?
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. And uh their their breakfast uh potato edges.
SPEAKER_05No, I've never tried those. I don't like their fries either.
SPEAKER_04Their potato edges, they're completely different, but they're awesome. Uh this one seems probably gonna be the easiest one for me because I have ingested enough of it to probably float my house down the river. Should we do this? Taco Bell.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, if I don't choose Taco Bell, I will get divorced.
SPEAKER_02And Ryan's getting Taco Bell tonight. Oh. Their seasonal stuff is so good. Okay, we're gonna call it. Like they already got rid of the chicken bacon ranch uh little tacos, and those were great.
SPEAKER_04I think he just uh probably yelled at his wife to say, bring me my Taco Bell.
SPEAKER_03You know what? As much as you know, I'm not a fan of Burger King compared to other fast food joints that I would prefer. So just for the sake of I want to try it, I'll give Raisin Keynes the point.
SPEAKER_02Well dude, okay. Burger King's breakfast is one of the most underrated breakfasts there are. I think Hardy's Hardy's is one of the Hardy's has the best biscuits. See, I worked at Hardy's. I can't stop.
SPEAKER_04Don't say no more. Right. Let's not divulge any secrets.
SPEAKER_02No, it's not that it was dirty or like gross or anything. It's just you've been around the smell.
SPEAKER_01You're at home smelling like it and can't stand it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like I can I can still smell the grease on my apron.
SPEAKER_04I love a good whopper. Extra pickles, extra ketchup. No too.
SPEAKER_02Burger King has the right idea for burgers. Yeah. Don't stack high. Make it wide. Your mouth can only go so high.
SPEAKER_04And something recent they put on their menus that that rivals any that I've had are their mozzarella fries. They're like, they're really good. They're really good.
SPEAKER_02They've got fried apple pies too.
SPEAKER_04But I can eat some raisin cane sauce on some boobies. So raisin canes for me.
SPEAKER_02That's just the sauce, though.
SPEAKER_04The sauce, the sauce trumps every other thing on this bracket.
SPEAKER_05Zagsby sauce is similar. But raisin canes is made fresh, look, gives an appearance. Zagsby hasn't beaten the toast category because they toast both sides. But if you tell them it's raisin canes, the toast both sides, they'll say, I need one bob buttered on both sides. When there'd be bob there. Here we got Bob. And here comes that. Hey, we got a bob.
SPEAKER_04When the Lord declared let there be sauce, that was the birth of cane sauce.
SPEAKER_02Which is a little Dave's hot chicken sauce. That's Louisiana comeback sauce for anybody that wanted to know. Dave's hot chicken sauce. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Now look at Burger King. I used to love Burger King. It's changed. Only thing I get there now is the original chicken sandwich.
SPEAKER_04What was the chicken sandwich that Burger King had that Hootie advertised? Tinder chicken something. He had the song.
SPEAKER_03They had a cheesy bacon chicken sandwich one time. We used to go to Pigeon Forge, Bipro Station, and we'd burn that Burger King up downtown Gatlinburg. Do you remember when we played the um the what were they called?
SPEAKER_04The church in Lexington. They were all like hippie type. And they had like henna tattoos, and they, you know, we got there and they were like, uh, y'all get to eat free. We have soy burgers, we have veggie burgers, and this and that. And they didn't know that we had just sent all the women in the band, and they came back with like seven bags of Burger King. And we sit there and eat cows right in front of the cow. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Raising canes, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Okay. See, there was one thing at Burger King I always wanted and never got. And it was the 14 karat gold Pokemon cards. Oh, I think that's if anybody listening wants to buy me one, I'd greatly appreciate it.
SPEAKER_03I would for the rest of my life eat one thing and one thing only, and that's a Chipotle burrito. Another, another Lex growing up or living in Lexington type of thing.
SPEAKER_05When I moved to Cincinnati and got my first job, the boss ordered Chipotle burritos. First time I'd ever had one for lunch that day. I later gained 40 pounds because I ate there four times a week and didn't know how healthy they were.
SPEAKER_03It happens.
SPEAKER_05Now, today I I ordered a Chipotle. You can only get it online. Uh quesadilla. Oh. Pretty freaking good. I've had limited experience.
SPEAKER_04I've had limited experience with Chipotle. But I really, really liked Chipotle when I had it. Um that then Ryze Ryan uh talked about in his what he would bring back. KFC no longer has the chicken littles like they were. Um I can't tell you the last time I went to KFC, and I do remember when I did, it cost us about 75 bucks. Um so I'm going Chipotle.
SPEAKER_05Now I will say Chipotle is a little on the pricey side too. Yes. It is. But it's good though. It is good. I feel like you're getting quality there.
SPEAKER_03And I appreciate the vote, Russ, in an attempt to, you know, like I did raising canes. Pretty good.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_02I think Chipotle's the weakest of that fast food style. Like I would pick Mo's and Qdoba over it. Moe's is really good. I'll never have to do that. Mo's is good. But I mean, it's better than KFC. I'm picking Chipotle still, but like, I mean, I'd pick Qdoba or Mo's over Chipotle.
SPEAKER_04Home record at Mo's is pretty good.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_03The reason I got turned on to Chipotle was uh Real World Austin. That's a mistake, I think. That's what got me to try it.
SPEAKER_02That's what got Chipotle famous.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've had Chipotle twice, and I've had KFC probably about 5,000 times my entire life. I'm going Chipotle.
unknownGreat.
SPEAKER_05KFC was a big part of my childhood. We go to the lake and get a bucket of chicken.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, but because back then you, you know, five bucks for a bucket of chicken.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I that's dairy cheer.
SPEAKER_05This one.
SPEAKER_01Oh god. Why did you do this?
SPEAKER_04Oh that's me.
SPEAKER_02I'm go, I'm going. Dairy Cheer's overrated.
SPEAKER_05I mean, it is not a good one. I don't know who you are. It's so overrated. But I will vote Chick-fil-A because I can eat Chick-fil-A. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
SPEAKER_04I'm going dairy cheer because they're open on Sundays. Okay.
SPEAKER_05You know, there was a long time when I first discovered Chick-fil-A that I'd be like, God, I'm gonna go with some Chick-fil-A today.
SPEAKER_01Derry Cheer's closed on Sundays, too.
SPEAKER_05It was on Sunday. They are?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_05Never mind.
SPEAKER_04Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_01They're both closed on Sundays.
SPEAKER_05I don't know that because I feel like I've had Derry Cheer on my way back for fully kidney.
SPEAKER_01No, no, they're closed on Sundays. The owner uh they are which one I think I've no, I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_04The one Pressenberg is open on Sundays. Yeah, because I don't know what Pressenberg is in.
SPEAKER_03You cannot be an independent owner, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04That is false information, Chris. Put my boat back on Derrich here.
SPEAKER_03I'm driving James's location. Chris, what you got?
SPEAKER_01I'm going Derrick here. They're the best. I mean, they have the best footlong ever.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. It don't matter, does it? I bet they do. I bet they do, Chris.
SPEAKER_01Very tasty chill.
SPEAKER_02Let's go ahead and hit this one. This round's hard.
SPEAKER_01Uh Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_02Chick-fil-A. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Chick-of-filla.
SPEAKER_02We've got all of our arguments out already. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Now it's the decisions. It's already been made, but I mean I gotta give my. I'm gonna say Chick-fil-A. If I'm if I'm voting with my heart.
SPEAKER_04That uh that odds chicken.
SPEAKER_05That's gonna be hard to beat.
SPEAKER_04They're creamy salsa. Raising canes.
SPEAKER_02Chick-fil-A is the bomb. Um Taco Bell, because some locations still have breakfast.
SPEAKER_04I'll go with Raising Canes again.
SPEAKER_01They did have good uh breakfast.
SPEAKER_04Raising canes. Ah you ron. Raising canes.
SPEAKER_01Wendy's.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, Wendy's by default, Wendy's.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna say Wendy's too. It's the chili.
SPEAKER_04Fine. Be there. Uh I'm gonna cook out. I'm going cookout because I could buy everything on the menu from cookout twice over before I could buy one meal at five guys. We're good with the blowout.
SPEAKER_05No, no, I'm going quality over quantity. Give me five guys.
SPEAKER_04There you go.
SPEAKER_05Keep having this ball game's over.
SPEAKER_04They just taste Ryan again. He loves playing with the boys and five guys.
SPEAKER_03All right, the final four set. Chick-fil-A, raisin canes, Wendy's, cookout. Okay. Let's start with this one.
SPEAKER_05Do we feel like any of them don't belong? Um have a quick discussion about who who eke their way through.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I think that could be easily said just upon their seed. Uh, but I'm going with cookout again.
SPEAKER_01I'm going Wendy's.
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_05Wendy's.
SPEAKER_03Uh oh.
SPEAKER_05Oh. Don't break my heart.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you can't beat the cookout. What's wrong with you then?
SPEAKER_05I'm glad that happened because Wendy's is probably my least favorite fast food place, and I had to vote for it every round.
SPEAKER_02Dude, this is like the breakfast. Nobody would pick because Cook Cat was like a 16 or 15 seed. Um, chickens.
SPEAKER_04This one's the tough one. Because to me, I can only get these when I go to Lexington andor Huntington. Like, no, there's no there's no Brays and Kings in Huntington. So I've got to go to, you know, drive at least a couple hours away before I can have either of these. Well, no more. That's right. There's Chick-fil-A over to college.
SPEAKER_02No, that's a Chick-fil-A Express. It's different. It's a Chick-fil-A express. It tastes the same.
SPEAKER_03I don't get anything different there, and I get any other Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. Much more expensive. But it does take an act of Congress to get in there. You have to map out a strategic entrance and exit the strategy when you're moving there to try to eat. That sauce, though. That's sauce, boys. God, that's sauce.
SPEAKER_02Saucy, sauce, saucy.
SPEAKER_04Raising cane just calls a sauce.
SPEAKER_02Were you mocking him? That was great. Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_04Hey boy, I'm telling you right now, boys. Raising cane sauce, it blows me in a creek, boys. Blows me in a creek. God bless you, Michael Johnson.
SPEAKER_02Well, if if you think about Chick-fil-A sauce. That was my best coding personality. I thought that was what you were doing.
SPEAKER_03Two votes so far. I'm still struggling.
SPEAKER_05All right. So it's about the sauce, Russ. And what you think about raising cane sauce is what I think about Chick-fil-A sauce. And you can get the minis for breakfast. Give me Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_01Chris. Chick-fil-a.
SPEAKER_05Oh, there it is.
SPEAKER_03It don't matter, but I've been giving a lot of support to raising canes, but I can I can't um I can't vote against Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_02I knew it'd come down to these two. That's blowing me a crack too, boss.
SPEAKER_03One shining moment. One shine.
SPEAKER_02Can we find it?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, really. Give me Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, this is where Cookout runs out. Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_05It was a Cinderella run for Cookout. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Butler made it to the final game and they lost on the buzzer beater.
SPEAKER_02I'm going cookout just because if it's almost summer and they're a watermelon milkshake.
SPEAKER_03Watermelon milkshake.
SPEAKER_04What about that peach milkshake though at Chick-fil-A?
SPEAKER_03What about that?
SPEAKER_05What about have you had the the orange sickle milkshake at Arby's?
SPEAKER_04The Dreamsickle? Yeah. Dreamsickle.
SPEAKER_05That's it.
SPEAKER_02Now, Chick-fil-A's frosted lemonade is also really freaky.
SPEAKER_04And they've got the best sweet tea on the planet.
SPEAKER_02They do. I just I had to go cook out. I had to be disappointed.
SPEAKER_04No, I'm sorry. It's Raisin Canes, I'm thinking. Raising Canes had the best.
SPEAKER_05Raising Canes has great lemonade, but so does Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_03I'm pretty sure all these favorites, Cook Out, Chick-fil-A, Raisin Canes, Axby's, had pretty good sweet tea.
SPEAKER_02I mean, this is everybody's a winner in this last round.
SPEAKER_03Right. Yeah, I have no problem at all with this championship.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't either. We're just happy to be a part of it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Happy to be here. Who hasn't voted? Alright, I'll vote. I gotta go. I mean, Chick-fil-A is probably if there's Chipotle, Chick-fil-A is like 1A for me as restaurants I could eat for the rest of my life only. But the cookout has a good variety. It's still kind of new because I don't get to eat there very much. Wow. I gotta go with it. And sweet tea is really good. Tip my cat.
SPEAKER_01I won't go Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_05Oh, who's it down to? Ryan? Russ?
SPEAKER_04Ryan.
SPEAKER_05Russ, is it me? Yeah. I voted first, I thought.
SPEAKER_04I voted Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_05Okay. I said it was easy. No brains.
SPEAKER_04Vote again, Ryan. What is it?
SPEAKER_05Chick-fil-A.
SPEAKER_04It's okay. I can't hate on that. I can't complain either. We already that wasn't entertaining. Yeah. That was uh that was very representation uh representational. Is that the word? Uh of the five of us. Very very representative of the five of us. Uh and Chick-fil-A is the winner of the 2026 SOFM fast food tournament challenge. All right, load up the wagon. Let's go. All right, boys. All right, that'll do it for episode 13 of the Songs of FM podcast. You can hear us on Apple Podcast. You can hear us on Spotify and on Amazon. And go to Buzzsprout or songfm.com and check us out in the visual form on YouTube. Uh so uh we want to thank you for joining us once again. And we hope you enjoyed the little twist of uh topics we threw at you this time. Uh what do you got there, James? Is that a waffle maker?
SPEAKER_02No, that's the Pokeball from Burger King. Uh hopefully somebody will say this and buy for me.
SPEAKER_04So just because he done that, just listen to this one. Just listen to it. Just go and listen to it. Uh, thank y'all for uh Ren, for Ryan, for James, for Chris, and Rust. We will see you on the last one.
