S1 Ep11 | Bre Guzan: Mother's Day Mayhem
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Ahead of mother’s day the Guuuz show studio is filled with flowers and welcomes a very special guest, Mrs. Breanne Guzan! The Guz duo educate Joe on all things parenting, long distance love, living in the U.K., and most importantly, the difference between detergent and fabric softener (it confuses us too Brad). They also delve into the history of their relationship, from high school sweethearts to youth sport managers for their four kids. Hope everyone has a Happy Mother’s Day!
And I said, where is the detergent at? And he goes, right here. And I said, no, that's the fabric softener. So for three years, Brad was washing his clothes with only years. Yes, it was. It was three years.
SPEAKER_02Hey, I was wondering why this shirt smells so good.
SPEAKER_01I was like, man, this is nice. Maybe not the cleanest, but it smelled great. So I was like, you know what? That's a win-win in my book. It's a way to win in my book. Welcome back to a very special episode here on the Goozan show. We have an extremely special guest, uh, one that is near and dear to my heart.
SPEAKER_02Show off the T's, too, by the way, guys.
SPEAKER_01Let's go. Happy Mother's Day. Uh, we have uh a very special shout out to all the super moms out there uh who are foundations to their families. I know Brie is certainly to ours. Please welcome my lovely wife and the foundation to our household, super soccer mom and longtime listener to the show, Brianne Gazan. Brie, welcome, welcome to work.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, thank you.
SPEAKER_01We would like to present these to you. Thank you. These are beautiful. Beautiful.
SPEAKER_02Thank you to the big shout out to the Home Depot. Massive shout out, guys. Just like Home Depot delivery, these flowers showed up right on time. With Mother's Day coming up, you guys, it's a great time to grab these fresh florals and spring finds from the Home Depot to make the day feel a little bit more special. Look at the studio. Has it looked this good ever? I mean, never. That smells so nice in here, too. It's fancy.
SPEAKER_01Smells great, looks beautiful. All for the queen of our house.
SPEAKER_02There we go. Yeah, the beautiful moms holding it down, Bree. I don't know how you do it. But thanks for all that you do. Longtime listener, too. Yes. Welcome in. How's it feel?
SPEAKER_05It feels nice to be here. Thank you for having me. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02Bree, I want to get right down to it, okay? Because I've heard the story from him a couple times now. I want to know how did you guys first meet? Who made the first move? Did this guy have a couple of voice cracks when he first came up to you? How did it go down?
SPEAKER_05We first met in the summer of my junior year, his senior year, and he just came over with a bunch of his friends to my parents' house to swim.
SPEAKER_01This is a high school. We're going way back. What year of high school are we talking here?
SPEAKER_05This is junior, senior year.
SPEAKER_01Is it in what of what year is that?
SPEAKER_05Um 2002.
SPEAKER_01Oh, there you go.
SPEAKER_05100 years ago. Correct.
SPEAKER_02Correct. And when you first laid eyes on him, did he like give you a flick of the hair? Did he have the swin trunks over the shoulder or anything?
SPEAKER_01I was already bald. I was already bold. I was talking about high school.
SPEAKER_05When I ever saw you, um Starstruck.
SPEAKER_01She was like, I mean, for you it was love at first sight.
SPEAKER_05I don't know. For me, it took some convincing.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it it you know, for for sure it was it was love at first sight. And um, you know, that's that's that's when it all started. You know, we we were we were talking that summer, and next thing you know, pop the popped the question, and I believe believe the words were if it was up to me, I think we'd be going out already. Those are the exact words.
SPEAKER_04Wow. Pretty pretty common.
SPEAKER_02She reminds me of that quite quite regularly, actually. Quite regularly. So he made the first move technically.
SPEAKER_05Yes, at a pool party.
SPEAKER_02Did he walk up to the map? Gentlemen. Absolutely. Did you say you remember?
SPEAKER_05I no, I mean at the pool party. That was the first time I met you. And then we were like hanging out with friends a couple a weeks, and then you asked me out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it moved quick, huh?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean, real quick.
SPEAKER_01I mean real quick gentleman. You know, I was we're friendly. We went, I would she took me to my first concert. Oh yes! Do you remember who it was? John Mellencamp.
SPEAKER_04Good thing you said that because I know my memory is terrible.
SPEAKER_01My memory's terrible. Yes. Uh but yeah, we we went to John Cougar Mellencamp. Wow. Um where was Anna?
SPEAKER_05It was in Chicago. I don't even know. This place changed names.
SPEAKER_01This place was like an amphitheater. It was outdoors, change, change names a million times.
SPEAKER_05I think it was called a Twitter, right?
SPEAKER_01Tweeter, Tweeter, Tweeter, Twitter. Sorry. Shout out to Tweeter, sir. Yeah. Uh and now it's no longer 15 names later. Uh I don't know how it's called. But yeah. Um, you know, she started showing me the world, and and next thing you know, I was I was showing her the world, you know, through through soccer.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_01Did he have any red flags early on?
SPEAKER_02Anything that you noticed about? You're like, whoa.
SPEAKER_05I mean, not when we're dating. We dated a very, very long time. So if I saw any red flags, I've been like, oh, goodbye.
SPEAKER_02Straight to the point.
SPEAKER_01Straight to the point.
SPEAKER_02And this podcast would not be having it right now.
SPEAKER_05I mean, now that we've been married, he like once he gets something in his head, he needs to complete that task, or else, like, he cannot function. And the main one that drives me crazy.
SPEAKER_01What do you mean, Maddie? Chime in, Maddie.
SPEAKER_02We know exactly how that goes.
SPEAKER_00Agree, funny you say that. We uh we feel the same way. Once Brad has something in his head, it's uh bull and a China shop into this control room, and he will not let it. But you know what? It's really good for us because it keeps you, you know, eyes downfield, making sure you get to the final thing. So I actually love it, but I can see how maybe at home sometimes you're like, okay, Brad, calm down. Go on. I don't I don't want to go.
SPEAKER_05I don't want to go. Just get home from late baseball, late softball. Kids are exhausted, but you see a sink full of dishes, you're putting those dishes in the dishwasher. I'm like, let's get these kids to sleep. Then do, let's, then do chores. You're like, no, no.
SPEAKER_01Listen, that I I've I've got a method to the madness. As soon as I make my way upstairs, there's no need to come back downstairs. It's ready. I'm ready for bed. It's a full day. It's a full day. So when we're coming home at 10 p.m. from U Sports, man, it's uh the the the the bed's calling. I'm I'm ready to get some shut-eye.
SPEAKER_02Bree blunt Brett claims that his secret town is unloading the dishwasher. Is this true?
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes. He does all the dishes.
SPEAKER_02Told you.
SPEAKER_04All the dishes.
SPEAKER_01Told you. And everything else. What's I say? What's insane? What's I say?
SPEAKER_05I always call him a halfer because he will hate. A halfer. Oh god. Do something and then like look to me to like finish it. Or like he'll people if you want something clean, he'll just like start shuffling things around and like look at me like, are you gonna clean this?
SPEAKER_01To be fair, our house, our house is I would say not always, but most of the time it's very clean, very organized. We have a lot of organizing stuff. Boxes, shit.
SPEAKER_04We have a lot of stuff though. We have a lot of stuff.
SPEAKER_01A lot of stuff. And that's another word for another word that we can't use on the podcast. But we have a lot of stuff, and um I never really know where it fully goes, right? In the the location of it. So it's I just kind of shuffle it around, and then she's like, Are you gonna put that away? And I'm like, Well, I don't really know where it goes, but if you could help me, that would be great.
SPEAKER_05I'm sorry, do you live here?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Bree just gave me the look of like to all the other mothers out there. I'm sorry, I know they get it.
SPEAKER_01All wives under understand that of you know, they're they're looking at their husbands saying, What are you doing? You're just becoming more of a a hindrance than a solution.
SPEAKER_02Let's go back to the origin story here. Breed, did you ever imagine yourself that you'd be dating a soccer player?
SPEAKER_05No, I never did. So I didn't know Brad and I didn't know of each other before we actually met. Like it's not like, oh, I knew him through friends, or like I knew he went to our school. I did not know who he was until we met. So when we did finally meet and we started dating, uh he was like, Oh, I play soccer. And I'm like, oh, okay, I I dance. And he's like, No, like it's a little bit more different than that. Soccer is my whole life. And I was like, Oh, okay, what does what does that mean? We're 17. And then I quickly learned that it was his whole life, and he was constantly traveling and always playing soccer, no matter what.
SPEAKER_01Oh Lord, I think it was like two weeks later. I was like, uh, I'm going to Brazil. And she's like, You're going where? And I'm like, uh yeah, we have a tournament in Brazil. And she's like, wait, like, you really do play soccer all over the place. And she's like, Okay, maybe this soccer thing is a little bit more serious than what I alluded to.
SPEAKER_05Your senior year, you won the golden glove, right?
SPEAKER_01Went to uh went to a tournament, yeah, and had a good week. And then it was always so modest. Had a good week. No, they won the trophy case. Had a good week of of this camp, and they gave me this glove, and next thing you know, it was you know, on a plane to South Carolina for for for college.
SPEAKER_02Hey, you had the new girlfriend bump, too. That's a real thing. So Brianna Saints said, All right, here we go. I'm playing today. Let's go.
SPEAKER_01Let's go. No, definitely. And then, you know, from there it was it was out to California, and you know, it was a long distance thing, and you know, it was long distancing started right away though.
SPEAKER_05We only dated one year being in the same place. Yeah, and then from eight years on, it was long distance.
SPEAKER_02Led to led led to marriage. Yeah. Four kids later. What was the secret to distance back then? Was it Skype, right? Was the big Skype?
SPEAKER_05You had a we would like, I think maybe email each other on like what time we were gonna Skype because like the OG email right now.
SPEAKER_02You could look up a little hot. I mean, I still have my OG email.
SPEAKER_05I still use it.
SPEAKER_01You definitely definitely still use it, the receipts are there, dog. That's just a it's an AOL email. It's an AOL email.
SPEAKER_05I can't get rid of it.
SPEAKER_01For sure, for sure. I mean, you don't even you wouldn't even know the struggle of dial up internet. You know, like how does it even be?
SPEAKER_05Or with our blackberries, we'd have to blackberries. Yes.
SPEAKER_01I mean, we're discriminating ourselves now, I know.
SPEAKER_05I know.
SPEAKER_02What is dial-up internet?
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. You're crushing me, dude. You're crushing me.
SPEAKER_02Chris, back me up here. Do you know how dial up internet works? No. Hey, the struggle's real. The struggle is absolutely real. What was that noise you made?
SPEAKER_01That was the dial up internet connecting to the phone line. And then somebody picks up the phone line in the house, the house line, and you're like, get off the phone. Exactly. You cut me off the internet.
SPEAKER_02If it's a late nine, you're like, yeah, I should call her. And you reach over and just go on.
SPEAKER_05Hey, where are we talking? England time zone? I'll be sleeping.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, true, true. You know, it was, I mean, listen, that we we had to overcome a lot of challenges, and you know, we made it. Here we are.
SPEAKER_02In these teas and flowers everywhere. Shout out the Home Depot. Happy Mother's Day. Incredible. Absolutely. So he went to South Carolina.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_02Where were you during the college time?
SPEAKER_05I was a senior in high school. I'm much younger than Brad. And then so he went about a year and a half. But I thought if I follow him to college, my parents will think I'm crazy. So I figured out that I wanted to become a nurse and I went to a small local school in Chicago. And I finished there. And then by then he was already in you were already in California, but maybe even England. It was 2008 because you were already in England.
SPEAKER_01It was the just to sum up the type of guy that I was. She studied nursing. She's studying nursing. And we'd be on the phone talking, and she's like, Oh, I got this big exam. And here I am looking up care plans, two and care plans, nursing information. So the running joke.
SPEAKER_05You would proofread all my care plans.
SPEAKER_01Yes. The running joke in our our family is, and I say our family meaning between her and I.
SPEAKER_05We're both nurses. Only I got a good degree. So we need to be able to do that.
SPEAKER_02You faced some crazy Premier League matches, big nights in MLS. How does that compare to the feeling you have going up to meet her dad for the first time?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Is there a crazier stadium pulse in life than that?
SPEAKER_01Like walking up to the house? It's going up to going up to the house, meeting the parents for the first time, especially when when you're a kid in high school, super nerve-wracking. I remember, you know, I remember what my mom said. Having to make the the make the call of you know, asking them for you know her hand in marriage, because traditional guy, you know, wanted to get their approval. Um what what did your mom say?
SPEAKER_05Our first date, she was like, You better drive slow. You have precious cargo. And that's like the running joke, too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So now anytime we go anywhere, it's oh, you gotta drive slow, precious cargo in the car. Now the precious cargo is the kids, so yes. Um, but yeah, it was it was always a case of hey, make sure you drive the speed limit, be very careful.
SPEAKER_02What were your guys' first cars in high school? Another memory question. I got them on the card.
SPEAKER_05So you have a you had a Ford Explorer?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Ford Explorer. No way.
SPEAKER_05I had a Tahoe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Ooh. What color?
SPEAKER_05Silver.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Silver Tahoe. Yeah? 2016 Volkswagen Golf.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I had and then I learned how to drive manual on a little Honda call.
SPEAKER_02I still don't know. Still don't know, man. Oh my gosh, dude. You showed me the parking lot after this? Gotcha. Whip it around a little bit. Yeah. Stalled.
SPEAKER_05So he tried to teach me to drive in England, and that lasted about one day. And I was like, I will walk. Because it was really different. And then I felt like I was 16 again, and my I was learning to drive, and I was like, this is not for me.
SPEAKER_01I valued my life. So I was like, No, um, yeah, we're gonna live in the city center, and we're probably gonna walk most places.
SPEAKER_02What was the timeline between so you got drafted by Chiefus USA? Then how did the opportunity come up of, hey, there's a chance for you to go play abroad? And how did you handle that with Bree?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you know, being out in LA and you start hearing like kind of rumblings through agents and whatnot, and hey, so-and-so might be interested, or you know, they're looking at you. And you know, that was a a time where, you know, it was I was playing, but I, you know, was in and out of the team, and and my confidence was kind of a bit of a roller coaster as as mostly is for young pros. And um, you know, for me, that part was was challenging. And it it came about and I said, okay, I'm I was originally I was in Scotland. I was meant to sign with another with another team in in Scotland. Uh, and then the last day of the window, my agent calls me and says, Hey, you know, Vill is interested. And I said, Okay, and I said, now I'm I'm on a plane, I'm going down to to England to Birmingham to to check Vill out, and she's like, Okay. And you know, then I get denied a work permit, so then we're back to LA. And you know, I'm not filtering the information, but it was kind of like, okay, we're in Scotland, England, and now we're back to LA.
SPEAKER_05And then it's like well, no, that was always his dream, so it was amazing that it was actually happening.
SPEAKER_01Super supportive. See? Wow, you know, I told you, unbelievable. Um, no, she would she was always great with the the support side of it in terms of whatever it is, you know, like chase your dreams and and go after it. Um and you know, I think that's the the part that as players, people on the outside don't always realize, right? Because there's certainly significant others, partners that aren't as supportive as my wonderful wife. And you know, they're like, Well, I don't want to go to this country, and I don't want to do this, and I don't want to go there, or I'm doing this, or I'm doing that. Um, and then that summer of 08, I was I was in Beijing uh at the Olympics and got a phone call. And you know, I called after I received that phone call of the approval for the word permit. You were the first person I called, and I said, We're we're going to England.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_02First off when you heard that.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_05I was still in nursing school. We are going to England. You are going to be able to do it.
SPEAKER_02She's thinking about driving like this.
SPEAKER_05I mean, and the thing about being professional, I mean, your career, you don't know how long it's gonna be. So you do have to chase your dreams when the opportunity comes, even if it's not the right timing, because I mean you were lucky enough to have a beautiful long career, but everyone who had retired before you say, like, play as long as you can and enjoy it because it goes by fast, and it really it does. It does go by fast. I can't believe you played as long as you did.
SPEAKER_0278 years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she's like, oh geez, what are the numbers? Carry the two.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, all right. Where does your loving posture as not just a wife, as a mom? Where does that come from? Did you get that from your household growing up from your mom?
SPEAKER_05Yes, I mean, I I only wanted to be a mom when I was little. I always loved kids. I was always babysitting, my cousins, anybody that would ask me to. I just loved kids. So that was my always my dream. I always said like he allowed me to live my dream by being a stay-at-home mom with his career.
SPEAKER_01Just getting emotional. I can't I can I can sense it in my sense. You know, it was, you know, we've we've talked about this story of the the day, uh, day with a dog. Um and then that didn't work out for us in England. That's right. The the the puppy.
SPEAKER_05Yes, I think I just wanted a baby so bad. Correct. Yes.
SPEAKER_01And and and listen, it's it's you know, having kids isn't, you know, it's it's not always as easy as uh as as it may seem. And especially we we know there's people out there that you know it's you know, they're not able to have that dream, you know. And um, you know, Brie was unbelievable in terms of you know helping create our family, and you know, it's uh that part's been the the best part of this entire journey.
SPEAKER_02How would you describe the sensation of having your first child? What's that feeling like?
SPEAKER_05It it was amazing. Uh we were surprised for all of our babies. The gender. The gender, yes.
SPEAKER_01It wasn't like one of those like nine months later. Where did this baby come from? Yes, but uh we the gender of the baby, yeah.
SPEAKER_05You were blessed to have four now, but it took a minute to get there. It took a so I always say that because it looks like oh we got pregnant so easily and we didn't, and it took two years to have Aiden, and I had to have surgery, and I found out I had endometriosis, things like that I wouldn't have known because I never had the common symptoms of it before. So then having Aiden and then having everyone else, they it was easy, I would say, and we were always like shocked that it came so easily, the other three. But oh my goodness, having Aiden, I was in labor forever. And then I wanted a boy so bad, and then when he came out, it was just wonderful.
SPEAKER_02And he was born in England.
SPEAKER_05England, he's our April Fool's.
SPEAKER_01Our first, our our first two, uh Aiden and Emerson, both born in in London. Um and as Breed likes to remind me, you know, I think I was out of the hospital within 24, 48 hours and Emerson. Back back off to training and to a game and on a helicopter. Excuse me?
SPEAKER_05Going to a game. Yeah, yes, but you flew on a helicopter because then I was worried about that too.
SPEAKER_01I'm a constant worrier. Like it was, I think Aiden was born on a Tuesday no Wednesday, a Wednesday. Um and then went back to training on Friday, and then we played Man United, I think either at home. Uh I think we played at home uh on the Saturday. And then with Emerson, she was born on a Tuesday. Um and then we there weren't concern I say concerns, but it was more of a case of we've got one baby at home. We didn't have a whole lot of help. Her mom had come over. Um, and you know, we're down in London, we're living in Birmingham, which is a two-hour drive north, and I'm playing for a club up in the northeast. And at that point, you know, we you know, the club saying, Hey, we need you to to be up here on match day. And I'm like, Well, I I can't leave my family in the in the hospital, you know, this, that, and the other. Um, and we were able to make it work, and I was on a plane that morning, flew, flew up, sat on the bench for the game against Man United again uh at the riverside, and after the final whistle, back on a plane back down to London and um was back in the back in the hospital.
SPEAKER_00Hey, Grady, a couple things here. Uh one, happy Mother's Day. And two, uh, my wife also has an AOL email address, and I make fun of her for it every day. So you guys can uh tuck that out. Um, we were curious, uh Brad, you know, gets very high, high on wins, low, low on losses. How did the Guzan family, you and the kids, approach Brad when he would come home after like you know, a really good win versus a really tough loss?
SPEAKER_05Okay, so you know, uh before you have kids, you can do what you want, is what I say. But when you have kids, then your your life is about the kids. So he did a really great job. If if he had a rough game, he would hold it in, and not like in a bad way, but just he wanted to teach our kids win or lose, that's what happens in sports. And you just have to go on and move on and And get ready for the next game. And you can't be too happy about a win or too sad about a loss.
SPEAKER_01She would always be super supportive. I I would have absolute howlers and blunders, and she'd be like, Oh, you played great. And I was like, um, I definitely didn't play great. Uh, we lost because of the mistake that I made, and that's not great. But she's like, Hey, you're still number one in our books, you know, like you're you're the best. And so she was always like super level-headed, um, really supportive, you know, and and to the point where, you know, we'd be in England, and you know, I think at the beginning, she wasn't, you know, I wasn't familiar with the intensity of what the Premier League brings, and yes, you know, what what that is all about. And, you know, her coming over, it was like, yeah, okay, like Premier League, you're living your dream. This is great, cool stadium. Next thing you know, things start to go south a little bit. We're not getting the results that we need. And she's like, whoa, this is intense.
SPEAKER_05I mean, it's very different in England. Like the they don't um sit fans on opposite teams close to each other, even like they got their own supporter section, keep them divided.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Um, you know, no, no beers in the in the stands, you know. But um, this is my thing. They're not selling beers, and and you know, I touched on this with Ben Foster, but like they're not selling beers in the stands, but they're just running up to the concourse at halftime and they're pounding three, four beers, like, let's go, let's go, then back down to their seat for the second half, you know. Yeah, and so you know that that I think was was an interesting learning moment for us, you know, being over there in that environment. But again, like even when we came back to the States, it was very much a case of you're great, you did great, no problem.
SPEAKER_05And then the kids were great. You were great in a lot of all the games. You won Player of the Year at Villa, you have that beautiful chip.
SPEAKER_01Super positive. Super positive. Um Yeah, and and you know, it was she would be, she would have a perspective of, hey, let's take a step back, let's look at the big picture here. It's not as bad as it seems today, you know, and always the case of this is amazing.
SPEAKER_05Like, and I think that would always say we have no problems.
SPEAKER_01Yes, you know, like, you know, whether it's the health of our our family, whether it's you know, me being able to do this this job, you know, that is uh a dream job of of playing professional soccer. Um, she'd always kind of paint a bigger picture of you're living your dream, and you know, we are healthy, our family's healthy, our kids are healthy and safe, and you know, life will go on, you know.
SPEAKER_02Let's go back to England for a second. He sold me a story that he took uh how many hours in a train did you take to get a little bit of taste of home? Yeah, you know the story too.
SPEAKER_01Hour and a half, hour and a half on a train.
SPEAKER_02What was the craziest thing you did during your time in England? Either to, you know, feel a little taste of home or something.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I think that was the only thing that the food is different there. And so we he was with the US team a lot, so I would go back and forth and I would just constantly bring our favorite things home.
SPEAKER_01She'd be packing like a suitcase of snacks and snacks, of like little like sachets that you would add to water. Because I mean it's it's very much like they don't have Gatorade. They have Gatorade, but different flavors. They've got you know, Lucasade, they've got different different flavors of things, and she's like, oh, like the peanut butter over there is not the creamy peanut butter that we're used to.
SPEAKER_02They don't have yeah, no, they don't have ranch in England.
SPEAKER_05It's it's more like the new one we lived there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was you know, not not hidden, hidden valley, you know.
SPEAKER_05Put mayonnaise on everything. Yeah, like so we would bring our our favorite things back.
SPEAKER_01But she'd have a suitcase full of clothes, and then of snacks and just different household items. And I'm like, what are we doing here? You know? And she, I'm like, what is in this suitcase? And she's like, Oh, that's half the kitchen, or that's the living room, or I really like these pillows and we're bringing it up.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I would bring a lot of decor.
SPEAKER_01She'd bring decor from from the States and you know, a little bit home.
SPEAKER_02A little bit of home. Do you remember his face when you'd unzipped the snack bag?
SPEAKER_05Like, was it like he was like, Thank you for bringing this back almost emotional at that point.
SPEAKER_01At first, I was like, Oh my gosh, what's in this suitcase? And then we'd get home and I'd be like, Oh, thank you for packing all this.
SPEAKER_02So, so thankful, so thankful. When you do think about balance, I mean, you went to the other side of the pond. You were fully invested in making sure that his dream was possible. How did you maintain your balance as a woman, as a wife, in your own pursuits too, with your nursing studies too? Where did that balance out, do you think?
SPEAKER_05Um, I think it was a little bit difficult for me at first because I was a little homesick, and then we I just w wanted a family. So that bit was I don't know if I enjoyed it so much in the beginning, but then once we had Aiden, it was like life was wonderful.
SPEAKER_02That's incredible. Yes, and now you guys have four total kiddos. And the puppy is here as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Teddy, permanently, totally, not just a one-day puppy. Permanent puppy, part of the family. Yes. Um, yeah, and I mean it's it's a bit chaotic at times. Yeah, certainly chaotic.
SPEAKER_05I mean, this is one of my favorite memories that when we got Teddy, because we we didn't tell the kids until the day we got them. And one of their favorite movies is Yes Day, and we had like a bit of a yes day for them. And we were just we took them out of school. I had Starbucks, and then we went to Portillo's.
SPEAKER_01Big shout-out, Portillo's Chicago, Chicago locals, now here in Atlanta.
SPEAKER_05Then we let them go to a store and pick out what they wanted, and then we were driving a bit, and they're like, Where are we going? I'm like, Well, what's one thing that you would have loved to do? And they're like, get a dog, get a dog, get a dog. And then we pulled up and we got this puppy, and I mean, everyone was like crying. They were so excited, so excited.
SPEAKER_01They were and and what Brie was very much against the puppy for for quite some time because she's like very understandable, by the way. It's another kid.
SPEAKER_05It's another something to take care of. Responsibility.
SPEAKER_01Um, but she she always told the kids when dad stops playing, when dad stops traveling.
SPEAKER_05So Griffin, the last game was like, Are we getting a dog?
SPEAKER_01So all all all of our family, you know, friends come down for for our you know, my last game, all wearing these wonderful shirts. Um, and uh amidst the the chaos of of the day and everything that's going on, Griffin's like, all right, dad's done playing. Can we get a can we go get a dog tomorrow? Like that's what that's where his mind was, you know. That that's uh our six-year-old, you know, he was like, yeah, he's like, this is great, dad's finished. He would get your dog. Correct. And he's just like, forget for forget dad, you know, like we're we're getting a dog, guys. And you know, our older two uh Aiden Emerson, they're like, oh my goodness. And you know, I think at one point Emerson, you know, she was she was like, Well, I only got to see dad play for nine years. Oh, yeah, and I was like, I'm sorry, you know, like she did say that.
SPEAKER_04She's like, I see dad played a long time. She goes, I only got to see dad play for nine years.
SPEAKER_01It was it was it was pretty sweet. Um, you know, but yeah, it was that moment of the joy that they had of of seeing the puppy, bringing the puppy home. And there are certain days that joy comes back, other days are like, yeah, Teddy, take a back seat, Teddy. You know, and I'm like, guys, remember, let's remember what that Teddy is part of this family. Um, you know, but no, it's uh he's he's he's all in.
SPEAKER_02Control room's got a couple questions. Guys, what we got?
SPEAKER_00Yes, we were curious. You know, we see I get to see Brad at the local youth sports park, and before the show started, we got the excitement of you two talking about a big softball playoff win. Bree, we were curious. Um, how does Brad, is he like the dad that, you know, go I have seen him go covert and stands on the side. Do you try to um introduce him as Brad Gazan or just your husband Brad? How does that work?
SPEAKER_05To um other parents. So Brad coaches our kids baseball teams and softball teams. And he's not soccer.
SPEAKER_01Not not soccer. I love that. Not soccer. The specialty, not so much, but everything else, yeah, sure. Flag football as well, add that there.
SPEAKER_02We're talking first base. First base coach, that's me.
SPEAKER_01Always sending them the second. Let's go. Let's go. Make a turn, make the turn. Always send them and force the throw. Force to throw. Let's see what they're working with. Can they throw? Can they catch?
SPEAKER_05But you are always so positive to the kids, and they love being on your team because you and your coach, Josh, you guys are a great team together, and you always get the best out of the players without yelling.
SPEAKER_01It's you see some you see some you see some dads, whether it's on the sideline, right? Uh, you know, whether it's at soccer games, and they're yelling and they're intense. And then whether it's on the baseball field or softball field, you've got other dads or or coaches that are yelling and going crazy, and they're saying, Oh, what are you thinking? You know, to like a nine-year-old. And you can see them just like, you know, melting down. Um, and and that that's not that's that's not great. And you know, kids are always they're out there to to make memories, to enjoy the experience. And win or lose, you know, you talk about kids having a short memory. Uh, it certainly is the case when it comes to to winning and losing you sports, and it's very much a case of, hey, what are the snacks after the game? Uh, what's my walk-up song music? You know, I can't walk up to to to home play it until someone's playing my my walk-up music, and they may never have gotten a hit ever, but they're like, I'm not going up there until my music comes on. Um, you know, it's it's all these little things that they remember, and it's about the experience. And so, you know, you need to have a positive outlook on it. You need to be able to encourage these kids to hopefully fall in love with the sport.
SPEAKER_02Well, speaking of making memories, guys, don't forget that the youth summer soccer camps are right around the corner, right here at Atlanta United as well. So if you've been thinking about getting your kids signed up, right now is the time. When you register for any youth soccer program, you receive a free Atlanta United home match ticket. That's right, a chance to get the kids on the field. Remarkable stuff. They can build up their game and then experience a match day at the best venue in Major League Soccer, Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Those spots are filling up real fast, so don't wait. Sign up today, and we'll see you guys this summer. When you guys think of peak family moments, whether it's kidding the puppy, first day in England, is there anything for you, Brie, that you wish you could live back one more time? Anything like that? I'll probably get emotional.
SPEAKER_05Um, probably the first time meeting everybody was pretty wonderful the day they were born. We go to Disney a lot, so the kids love that. But even more so, we are going new places, and they feel like because we go to Disney so much, these new places they are so excited. We just went for a soccer tournament in Arizona.
SPEAKER_01U sports taking us all over, you know.
SPEAKER_05And we went hiking, which didn't seem like something we would enjoy, and we loved it so much so that the next weekend we did like a little one-day adventure.
SPEAKER_01We went up North Georgia Mountains. We went up north north Georgia Mountains and we did some hiking.
SPEAKER_05I was like, I mean, are we a hiking family? Yes. I mean, now we're getting older and we're like able to do different things without carrying a million things and the stroller. I mean, it's really been fun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I will say, Brie always make sure, you know, amidst all the craziness, right? Whether it's the kids' schedules, my schedule, you know, what we have going on in in in just our daily lives, you know, she does an unbelievable job of scheduling family pictures, scheduling, you know, we're gonna go to dinner, we're we're gonna do this activity as a family. Um, and so in the moments, I don't know if I'm always appreciative of those adding more chaos to a very tight schedule. And I'm like, oh, we're doing this, we're doing that. And I've come to learn now, guys, if we're doing pictures, if we're doing family pictures, whatever mom wants us to wear, put put it on, smile. The quicker you smile, the quicker it's over with. Get it, get it out of the way. And I've learned that lesson. The kids, not so much. The kids, the kids fight back almost.
SPEAKER_05Also, I've learned a lesson too that like what I have to not have so much control. Like, if they want to wear this certain shoe or the high socks, I'm like, okay, let's just do it. Because it'll be a better picture. I mean, am I gonna fight over clothing? It'll be a better picture. Exactly. So I've got loose a little bit.
SPEAKER_01She does a fantastic job of making sure that that we're creating these memories together as a family, you know, and and like I said, our our schedules are chaos, you know, and our our youngest youngest who's now four, Everly, she'll she's asking to start sports, and so we're gonna add another schedule to the to the craziness um, you know, here shortly, I'm sure. But it's, you know, as a parent, as a mom, as a dad, you know, we know that we're not the only ones going through this, you know, with kids. Um, there's so many parents out there that are working, you know, nine to five, coming home, running one kid to one practice, going to another practice to pick a kid up who, you know, the the neighbors have taken to to a different practice, and vice versa. And you know, as parents, you see each other kind of coming and going, and hey, I'll meet you at this game, or I'll I'll pick up him and you pick up her and we'll figure out dinner on the dinner is out the door. Dinner is we we we were very big. This is probably I mean, we still are when we can to to sit down and have dinner as a family and you know, talk about our day and you know, how was school and you know our kids are now getting older where their schedules are are I wouldn't say taking precedent, but you know, they're becoming busier and busier. Um and as our older two get more and more, you know, into those closer to those teenage years, it's very much of how was school? It was good. What'd you learn? I don't know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02What do you mean you don't know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, so it's like you know, you're you're you're trying to uh engage a bit more. Um but yeah, it's uh it's it's exciting times. And and like I said, we know the saying of what is it, the the days are long, but the years are short. Yeah, that that constantly plays in the back of my head. It's because before we know it, they're gonna be off to college and we're gonna be looking at each other saying, All right, what what what university visit are we doing this weekend? Where are we going?
SPEAKER_02Well, hike today. Correct. Sounds like they got dad's memory, too, by the way. Watch out. I don't know. Where's my TikTok? Parenting one-on-one, a goose and family road trip. What are the fundamentals? I'm talking go-to snacks. Are the are there movies playing in the background? Yes. How what are the keys to victory on a road trip?
SPEAKER_05Okay, well, everyone enjoys their own iPad, but if we do watch a movie, they love the parent trap. They do love that one. Or like classic Christmas movies. I haven't done a good job into like they love a Christmas movie.
SPEAKER_01Any time of year? Like it could be June, and then Home Alone's a huge, yes, a huge favorite. And it's on it's on the iPad, it's whether it's in the car, whether it's at the house. Um, you know, as Brie alluded to, we we we enjoy Disney, the kids like Disney, not a terrible drive. Um, but around the holidays, we'll drive up to Chicago, and you know, we've we've got to be able to bring all of Santa's gifts back to to Georgia. And so we need a car, and we'll make the drive. And um home alone, it's it's it's being played numerous times on that drive.
SPEAKER_02For you guys who grew up in a place like Chicago too, how special is it for you guys to see your kids experience a Christmas snow or to go sledding? Like, how much does that remind you of your childhood growing up?
SPEAKER_05Yes, it's so wonderful. Like, I always hope that it snows a lot whenever we go back for Christmas time because that is their chance to play in the snow. And what is it? Maybe last year it snowed here in Georgia, and they were we got um pool floats out for them to go down the sledding.
SPEAKER_01I mean, the city shut down. I think yeah, it was like I think it was maybe like two or three years ago. Yeah, city shut down, ice, snow everywhere, and the kids are like, this is amazing! This is this is so cool. Um, yeah, I mean, those those moments, those memories, you cherish those for forever because the the smile on your kids' faces. I mean, all all parents know, you know, when you when you see your kids having fun, enjoying what they're doing, um, you you want your kids to be happy, to be healthy, to be safe. Uh, and in those moments, it's like, yeah, this is this is perfect. You just bottle it up and and cherish it.
SPEAKER_02You've lived all over the world now. What makes Atlanta so special?
SPEAKER_05I think that our family was complete here and seeing them grow and make friendships of their own. And again, they are happy, so we're happy because it's they've made so many friends and they're happy at their school, and it's just uh easy to easy to live here.
SPEAKER_01The the the word that comes to my mind is community. You know, when when you think about Atlanta, you think about community, you talk about school, talk about friends, family friends. Uh it's true, as parents, you become friends with your kids, friends, parents. Yes. Uh, and we're very fortunate to to not only know that our kids have good friends, um, but that we enjoy their parents' company. And you know, we we have a very close group of friends uh that we're very thankful for. And um, you know, as as they say, when it comes to raising kids, it takes a village and not having immediate family help here in Atlanta. We certainly rely on on our community of of other parents. And um, you know, we're we're super grateful for them and and all they do in terms of helping us out and and just you know how they raise their kids and very similar to us, and and it makes it, you know, that easy, uh, an easier transition knowing that the kids are growing up uh with with other good kids around them.
SPEAKER_02Now we get to the end of the playing career arc, and he's here. He's got his own podcast. This guy is flying around the office on seven espresso, which I'm sure he's doing at the house too.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_02What have been some of your favorite parts of post-playing Brad? And maybe some parts where you're like, oh, you're not going to to training ground right now? Okay, I guess we can go for a hike. I mean, you don't want to go do something?
SPEAKER_05Well, I feel like you're busier now than ever because you are saying yes to everything, which is good, but you're kind of seeing what you like to do. Um, and it's he's tells me his daily schedule. I'm like, okay, I will see you for soccer practice later.
SPEAKER_01The first week, she's like, Um, it's 1 30. Why aren't you home? And I'm like, uh the work day's a little bit longer than 130, you know. Um, but no, it's it's you know, I think it it certainly took some getting used to and just figuring out that routine of how it's gonna, you know, look and work.
SPEAKER_05And just making sure everyone's getting to their right place and if we need to ask for help and things like that.
SPEAKER_01And like again, she does an unbelievable job of whether it's school pickup, whether it's you know, after after school um extra help, whether it's student council, whether it's after school sports, then getting to, you know, recreational sports uh outside of the school environment. Um she'll just shoot me a text and say, Hey, I need you to pick up so-and-so at this location and I'll meet you there, or um, I'm grabbing, I'm grabbing her, and then I'll meet you over there, and you pick up him, and it's just constant communication, and yeah, it it works and all because of all of her planning and organizing.
SPEAKER_02Where would you be as a man, you think, if it wasn't for Brie?
SPEAKER_01Uh, I'd be lost. Um, plain and simple, I'd be lost. And and I say that just because, you know, I've always said, and I've told you this before, when we had kids, it changed my perspective on on how I competed in in terms of whether taking home a bad practice or a bad a bad game, taking that home and letting that sit with me for for a few days. Having kids, that changed my perspective on on competing as a professional. Um, but then just the you know, I wouldn't have any pictures, that's for sure. Uh no family pictures, um, and and I'd be lost because laundry certainly wouldn't be done. And you know, there there'd be the odds.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I'm gonna tell this story. I said you need to go to the house. Go on the show, come on now. Okay, we unleashed. Come on. This is your show. Take it away. Oh, this is bad. Oh, this is bad. Just got married. I f I moved over there, and the washroom dryer in England is first of all in the kitchen, and it's one unit. And it's not like you could press cold and like you know, normal and wash your clothes. It was letters and numbers. So I didn't know how to use it.
SPEAKER_01Nor did I. But I'd been living there for about a year now.
SPEAKER_05So Brad for about a week did my wash, and then I said, Okay, teach me how to do this. I want to learn. And I said, Where is the deter detergent yet? And he goes, right here. And I said, No, that's the fabric softener. So for three years from washing this clothes was the one.
SPEAKER_02I was wondering why this shirt smells so good. I was like, this is nice.
SPEAKER_01I mean, maybe not the cleanest, but it smelled great. So I was like, you know what? That's a win-win in my book. That's a win and win in my book. Uh yeah, the washer and dryer in in the UK was different than here in the States. Um took some time getting used to. Uh clearly a little bit longer for me uh than most. Um but yeah, it's uh, you know, she she does an unbelievable job of knowing where the kids' clothes are, where their jerseys are, you know, whether it's something, you know, where's my coaching shirt? You know, it's like she she's got it all sorted and and she makes everything run so smoothly, as as I'm sure so many moms out there do. Uh like I said at the beginning, to to make their household um just run as as efficient as possible.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, on behalf of the Guzan show to all the moms out there, especially to Caroline Freihoffer if you're watching. I love you, mom. Thanks for changing my life. Bree, you guys are foundations of families everywhere. Foundation to this guy. This show would not happen if it wasn't for you. Thanks for all you've done for uh all the years of his career as a man, too. You're a very special person in his life, in our lives. We appreciate you a lot. So this has been really cool. I guess to send us off, I was curious if you could travel back in time and talk to young Brie before she begins her her brand era. Let's call it. I was trying to think of a nickname last time. Bread. Sourdough. Like that was a blue hole. I like it. I like it. What what would you say to your young self? Any any advice at all for all the adventure that awaited you?
SPEAKER_05I mean, just enjoy it because it really goes by fast. It really does. I can't believe we have an 11-year-old as our oldest baby, and then our everyone in between. I mean, like we like when we say the years are short, but the days are long. It's true because I we always say we always sing that song, you're gonna miss this, you're gonna want this back. And we always think about that in the hard moments of parenthood. Like even when I see little ones, I'm I miss it.
SPEAKER_02Any words for bringing all she's done for you? Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for being a wonderful, loving wife, so supportive. Uh, and uh thank you from the bottom of my heart for being the best mom to our kids. You are the one that holds our house together, you are the one that uh keeps everything in perspective, and you make life great every single day. And so thank you so much. Thank you. Um Joe, I know you can't say this, but I will. I love you. Um thank you for coming on this podcast. I know this space is not your space. Not not your space, and so to be able to come on, um absolutely smashed it out of the park. So thank you, thank you, thank you. Um, and then uh just text me later what the what the kid schedules are and uh we'll we'll make it work. We've got a 5 30 softball game, we've got a 7 o'clock baseball game and a 7 30 baseball game. Um and I think soccer practice, we're gonna push that to tomorrow. Playoff baseball, I guess, takes priority. So uh multi-sport athletes over in the Gazan household. Go, Yellow Jackets. Let's go. Come on, baby. Bring it home, bring it home.
SPEAKER_03Let's go.
SPEAKER_01Well, Joe, it's a very special day coming up on Sunday, Mother's Day. It was wonderful to have my beautiful wife come into the podcast studio, jump on the podcast, talk all things, uh motherly all things, uh, as a wife to a uh now former professional footballer, former professional architecture. I know, I know. Um, you know, it was again, it was not her, this is not her space, but for her to come on and and share, share her version of our life story together. Uh it was uh it was great to have her on.
SPEAKER_02Smash it, man. That's the thing too, is we we know you as the captain. We see you in media, we've seen you and rooted in the stripes too, but to see the all that goes into not just you on the field, your family, you as a man, to all those different moments of you guys as a couple that have led you even to this podcast right now. Shout out all the moms, especially Bree for hopping on the episode. It's fantastic. Shout out Home Depot, too, by the way, Brad. The flowers too deliver right on time. And speaking of, guys, it's now time for fan questions as well, delivered by the Home Depot. Just like a Home Depot delivery, these fan questions showed up right on time. Guys, we got a special announcement for all of you guys, too, who entered in our Brad Guzan golf ball giveaway as well. We should have a heater of a video coming up this week with Parky as well. We'll see how the seven-hole challenge came out. Sounds like we had some woodpeckers get in the way of some backswings. In the meantime, guys. Oh, this is good. Our Roberto7030 would like to ask us who in the group would last the longest on naked and afraid? I already know my answer.
SPEAKER_01In which in our group?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, on the show.
SPEAKER_01Like between you and I.
SPEAKER_02The team? So I don't know. Just in case. Um yeah, we'll do both. We'll do both. On the show, Chris Jordan. Really? Easily. Chris, show yourself. This guy could talk himself out of any situation. Let's if it was him and one guy and the guy had not eaten in 16 days. Chris could make him laugh so hard that he just passes out and he's like, I'm dipping. Peace. I'm hopping on this raft. I'm out.
SPEAKER_01Love that.
SPEAKER_02It's unreal.
SPEAKER_01Love that. All right. I do. Chris, I see, we're learning stuff about each other. Never knew. I I I appreciate that that willingness to survive. Um, yeah, I don't know. I know it would not be me. I would I would not be out there. I I mean, I think, yeah, it it wouldn't be me. I would give it a good day or two, but I'd be I'd be finding that wrath I'd be dipping.
SPEAKER_02You know how to like make a fire or lean to or anything?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, I think I would know how to. I would think I would know how to do it, but when it came to survival, I would be I'd be struggling. What what about you guys in there? Matty, what do you what do you have?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think you two finished dead last. I think it's I actually think I would do okay. I just wouldn't be very good at the challenges and everything, but like the whole like being out in the wilderness and getting bit and all that, I that wouldn't bother me. I think the brains would it would come down to Chris versus Robbie. Robbie's pretty pretty cheeky with the the smarts, so it would be one of those two.
SPEAKER_02Next question comes from R underscore Gizus or Jesus. How much product did Tito Vyalba put in his hair back in the day?
SPEAKER_01Oh man, uh, we're going way back. Uh big shout out Tito. Um he certainly loved uh some product in his hair. Um also, if I remember correctly, love the the body spray and just the the scent, the aroma as he walked by you, whether it was coming up the stairs or going into the meal room. Um someone that certainly looked after themselves. Uh love loved to do a core a core circuit in the gym uh and wasn't afraid to show that off uh on match day when when the opportunity presented itself, take his top off. Um but fair play to him.
SPEAKER_02Matt, is it safe to say that if you were low on scent that week and you went into the locker room, it's like walking into a Sephora. You can just kind of hold your arms out like this and you'd be set for the week.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know, it's great that Chris Winkler is by us too. Chris Winkler, everybody! Chris Winkler.
SPEAKER_02We love you.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the show and Tito Villba and how much product you put in his hair. The thing that I remember that Chris and I would actually laugh at is from the time that the match ended into the locker room, clothes would just be coming off, like throwing into the people in the stands, and then you know, he would just by the end, we're just kind of go into the locker room. But I the yeah, the the the body spray, the um you would know when they would enter the building for sure. Uh I love those guys though. They were they were hilarious. One time we told him we were gonna dress up as them for Halloween, and we're gonna wear like jean shorts and roll them up, and then just spray a ton of axe on ourselves and walk in.
SPEAKER_02I have a memory of growing up and going to summer camp in Michigan, and there used to be a thing, I can't remember what they were called, axe something. You take duct tape, you get a full thing of axe body spray. What? Duct tape the button on the top so it's like on, run to a cabin, throw that boy through the door, and sprint in the whole cabin for the whole week. Oh my gosh. Am I Chris? Is this ringing any bells? Chris Jordan?
SPEAKER_01Not for me, dog. Not for me, dog. Joe, I don't know what you guys are doing up in Michigan for fun. Um, I've never heard of that one, but uh yeah, maybe down the road. Maybe down the road.
SPEAKER_02Big shout out to all of you fans and listeners here on the Gousan show for entering in for your chance to be randomly selected to win a case of Brand Guzan golf balls. Um, we have got, I think, a winner right here. We've got David Goh, who emailed us in a question at bgshow at atl-utd.com. He'd like to ask you, Mr. Gousan, I hope you're well. I saw that you went to the masters. What was your favorite part of the whole experience?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, I mean, for me, I was fortunate enough to take my oldest daughter. Uh, and so we we went uh wasn't my first time, it was her first time. And as a dad trying to just have some dad-daughter time, um, no better place than Augusta out on the course. The the beauty of the course, the scenery um was there uh in partnership with Mercedes-Benz. And so um they certainly know how to do it right, and we had an unbelievable experience. But for me, the the the nature and the beauty of the the course itself, just being able to not be on your phone, walk with your daughter, uh, and and experience that together, that that's something I'll cherish forever.
SPEAKER_02We also had our very own Mookie of the show was at the Masters as well. Matt, what did you think?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I'm blessed every time I get together, and it's rare. So when I do get the opportunity, it's it's very special to me. I don't know if you guys knew this, but uh yeah, I'm with Brad on everything you say about being without your cell phone. It's a different place. So I wanted a gnome. I went on Reddit to like check where you have to park and everything, and then I saw the like challenges about getting a gnome. So I woke up at 2 30 Atlanta and drove to Augusta and then just went on my own adventure before I met my wife and my brother-in-law who were coming from uh a different way because I had to stay in Atlanta a little bit longer for the with the kids. So I was by myself from you know 2:30, got in there at when the gates opened at 6, got a gnome, and then they let you check it because everything they do there is spectacular. But then I was just kind of waiting, I wasn't meeting them until like 10 a.m. So I was just by myself out in Agasa watching. Um Rory was the first person coming through at a par three, and I was like, this is just a beautiful moment because you feel like you're just in a different place, and it's it kind of just really is peaceful.
