Welcome Back And Mets Beatdown

Welcome back to another episode of Rodley Love Sports. I'm your host, Adam Kern, and today it is just me. You get to hear my lovely voice for however long I can edit this episode down to. Oh, wait. First off. Gotta pour a drink. The Phillies are looking exactly like we thought they would. And it's getting great. I'm having fun with it. And the best part is is they all they didn't sweep the Mets. I wish they did. But that game where they was just a 15-3 beatdown. Oh, baby. The Mets came in into the bank and got introduced to the Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber Demolition Company. I mean, Harper hits for the cycle. Schwarber starts launching balls into areas of the ballpark that honestly should require a boarding pass. And then they both run it back the next night. That's not just a series win. That's a statement. Granted, it's the Mets, and the Mets have been just awful. But also, you savor it because it's the Mets. And the Mets are awful, and we hate the Mets.

Schwarber Bombs And Philly Joy

So I want to talk about Schwarber just absolutely launching bombs like we've seen him do over his entire career. And I, for one, am just happy that he's doing it here in Philly. He is trying to make a case to end the home run derby before it even starts. In the game against the Mets that they won 15-3, he launched two home runs in the same inning, roughly in the same spot. And the MLB had them measured at 456 and 457 feet, respectively. Those were insane. I mean, hell, I think we need to start a petition to rename the second deck. It is no longer the second level. It is now Schwarber Landing. And every fan that buys tickets in that section should probably have a baseball helmet issued to them upon upon purchase. But here's a question for you. Is Schwarber the most entertaining slugger we've had in Philly in years? I would argue yes. Because after the the 08 team had their drop off, they were still good in 09. And then by what was it, 2012, 2013, the the team was gone. A lot of the original guys had either moved on to other teams or retired. And nobody really came in and filled that gap. But Schwarber, Schwarber has been phenomenal to watch. It's like he's just it's like he's getting better with age. Maybe not necessarily in the field because he doesn't really do that anymore. But at the plate, oh yeah.

Harper’s Cycle And Big Questions

So let's move on to Harper for a minute. Hitting for the cycle is a thing of beauty. And I argue that it might be harder than pitching a perfect game. I'm happy to debate that with anybody, but that's just my take on it. And we've gotten so used to Bryce just being Bryce that sometimes what he does, we just kind of act like it's normal. And when it's not, it I mean, the man just hit for the cycle against the Mets. And thank God that it was in front of the home crowd. And it was honestly during a weekend where the Phillies needed to remind everybody of who they actually are, and that's star player caliber. So Dombrowski saying he's not an elite player anymore. Well, maybe had a slow start to the season, but he is certainly heating up now. So after the Phillies closed out the Met series with a 6-2 win, they went into Washington last night, and they were down, I think it was 8-6. I'll be honest, I turned the game off. I wasn't even watching. I was like, all right, you know what? They the the pitching staff just doesn't have it tonight. It you know, offense came to play and and the pitching pitching couldn't hold it. So I I chalked it up to a loss. Boy was I wrong, and I should not have turned the game off because they came back and won 14 to 9. I thought they were dead that game, and then they weren't. Maybe that's on me for for having the doubt, but I guess this is just the Phillies experience. You're annoyed, you're checking the score, you're questioning your life choices, and suddenly they throw up eight runs with two outs in the ninth, like they were just waiting for everybody to get pissed off first. Well, congratulations. You you guys know how to continue this abusive relationship we're in, as do the other teams in this city. And I guess we just need to accept the fact that this is where we live. But I do want to know if this type of comeback is a sign of a dangerous team or just a team that keeps putting itself in dumb situations. You're not gonna survive the playoffs being down in every game. You're not gonna survive the playoffs when certain guys of a certain caliber don't produce consistently. Guys in their lineup as of late have been much better, and I will give them that. And hey, they it's June, it's it's hitting season, as they say. But I'll reference something I went back to at the start of the season. It gets warm and everybody on the team plays a little better. Pitchers grip the ball a little better, their stuff has a little more bite, the the ball jumps off the bat in the hot weather, people start to hit a little better. Even those bloop hits just seem to find green grass. But when the weather starts to turn and things just get a little bit colder, the team drops off and disappears. I want to believe that this is a team that is going to sustain and just make a run for the playoffs. Right now they're five and a half games back from the Braves. Theoretically, they can win the division. I don't know that they'll get one of the first round buys. I honestly I doubt it. And based on how this team operates, I think having any time off going into the playoffs is bad for the team. They need to get hot, kind of like they are now, and just carry it through the playoffs. And then, you know, into the World Series and come home with a win. Even when they're playing well, I still feel like I'm hard on this team. And we need to be. They have the I don't want to say right group, but they have a group that is talented enough to win it all. And so far, we haven't seen it yet. So I'm gonna continue to be hard on them. But we'll put a pin in them for now.

Sixers Pick And Flyers Draft Plan

Let's uh let's check around the other sports teams. So the Sixers, or I should say, the NBA draft started. And the Sixers selected LeBaron Phillon. Phillon. Sorry if I butchered that, uh, Junior, with the 22nd pick in the 2026 NBA draft. Uh he's been described as a dynamic addition uh to a to an already young nucleus. And the NBC Sports Philadelphia said uh he is more offensive power for the backcourt. Do we like the pick or do we are we just numb to the Sixers roster building chaos? Food for thought. I'm not gonna dive too much too much into them as they continue to be all smoke and mirrors. So let's move to the Flyers. It is draft week. Well, I guess it's more of a check-in. The Flyers are picking 21st overall, and they have four total picks after their trade with Toronto. So they've got the 21st, 53rd, 181, and 213. And the draft starts on the 26th. So do the Flyers use their pick or picks, I guess. Or do they need to be more aggressive and try to move up for a more NHL ready talent that that's gonna help propel them to the next level next year? Because now you made the playoffs. That was an accomplishment. They gotta make the playoffs again next year. And if you don't, then everything that they accomplished this past season was a fluke. Now, I'm not saying that that you know that immediately should put anybody on the hot seat. I think it makes their seat warm. But I would be very interested to see what they do in the draft. I again, I like their trade that they made. You know, a six foot-four defenseman, a solid backup to Vladar. And credit to the Flyers front office right now, but like really Briere. Vladar had a good season, and the Flyers didn't get stupid and just spend big money to lock him up for years on end. That has been a pain point with this organization for for years, like years, probably a lot longer than I've been alive. I like that Vladar had a good season. I am still not 100% sold that he is the answer to our problems. I hope he continues to progress and get better and he turns into the guy that we do need. But I think Babrawski's a free agent. And what, he's 37 now. I heard a rumor that he was looking for like a six to seven year, some crazy contract. Now, I wouldn't give that to him. He he is not worth that to me. I would offer him a solid three-year deal with, you know, decent money. Don't have to go crazy spending a ton on him, but I would love to see him in Flyers Orange again. Flyers still need to find themselves another really good center. I I think Coots done really well playing on the fourth line. It remains to be seen how training camp will go and how Tocket wants to adjust the lines. But honestly, I I feel like him being on the fourth line helps balance out the some of the other lines. So keep him there. Keep Ziegris on your top line. Got to find that that second line center. I haven't been this excited for a Flyers draft since they got the number two overall pick. And boy, looking back, what a disappointment. And I don't I don't blame any anybody in the organization for for what happened. If I were in Hexstall shoes, I would have done the same thing and taken taken Patrick. I mean, at the time he was he was one of the top-rated talents. You you didn't expect him to have a very short-lived career. But I digress. So,

Eagles Camp Questions And QB Money

let's go on to the Eagles. Training camp right around the corner. But I'm very curious as to some of the questions they're gonna answer. And primarily around the offense. You you wonder what Sean Mannion's gonna bring to the table. Who who is the clear-cut QB number two? Because at this point, I think that matters. Hertz is gonna be looking for an extension, and I'm not convinced that he gets it. And you guys heard me a couple weeks ago. I talked about it with Fry on. You look around the league, a lot of young quarterbacks on rookie deals, or the guy that just won the Super Bowl on a veteran deal, but a very friendly team veteran deal. It's almost like you can go out, you can have success and win. And the way this Eagles team is built, you don't have to pay a quarterback big money to do it. I know everybody was all up in arms a little bit when Tanner came in and he didn't look great. But you can't expect a guy that rides the bench all season to come in for a game, maybe two, and expect him to perform at a very high level. And I know some people can make the argument that, oh, he's he's a professional, he's getting paid to do this. Well, yeah, but he's back up for a reason.

Confidence Check And Weekly Trivia

We'll get into the uh question of the week. Last week I asked, this was more of an open-ended question. But which Philly sports situation are you more confident in right now? The Phillies figuring out the back end of the rotation or the Flyers building a stable goalie room? And based on the trade that the Flyers just made, I am more confident in them building a stable goalie room. I think Briere living through some of their goalie woes and playing for this team when he did, I think has helped him evaluate that a little differently and make better decisions because of it. Last year, like you got Flodar, uh, obviously was a great pickup, and you just you thought Arison was going to be better, and he wasn't. That is what it is. How they were able to offload Arrison in that deal is amazing to me, but hey, wish him the best. Hopefully a change of scenery is what he needed. So that that's my take on the question of the week. Let's move it over to the question for this week. And because the Phillies have been hitting so much better lately, I'll ask you this.
