Welcome back to another episode of Brotherhood Love Sports. I'm your host, Adam Curran, and it is just me tonight, and God do the Phillies frustrate the ever-living hell out of me. To to watch that blunder last night that cost them the game. I there's not enough alcohol in the world to get me to forget that one.

The Ninth Inning Baserunning Blunder

If you missed it, Phillies were down two to one, bottom of the ninth, one out, Crawford on third, Ril Muto on second, and Marsh up to bat. Just setting that scene, like, oh man, I went in there feeling pretty good. Like, here comes a comeback. Unfortunately, Marsh had a weak ground ball to third. And Crawford made a rookie mistake. He hesitated. It looked like he was supposed to go on contact. He took, I don't know, three, four steps and then stopped, unsure of what to do. Kid should have just kept running. It is what it is. He got caught in a rundown, which would have been fine. That would have been a mistake that I would have been like, okay, he's a rookie. We can live with that. But JT, the 13-year vet, somehow managed to make it worse. So much worse. JT runs to third and stood there for a second as Crawford was in his rundown. At some point, he decided, you know what? Second base is looking awfully lonely. Maybe I should go back. And he took off running back to second. And by this point, Crawford is on the verge of being caught. He gets tagged, bet's throws to second, and they tag JT out. And bing, bang, boom, double play, end of game. On something that should not have happened. I JT should have just stayed on third. Let Crawford be out. Then there's two outs and two guys on, and you still have a runner on third. Just let that play out the way it should. Just to make such a blunder. It was just unfortunate to see that this was a game they could have won. And not doing the little things right cost them.

Turner’s Errors And Bad Contracts

Brings me up to uh to Turner. Committed his 15th error on Monday night. He continues to look awful defensively at shortstop. A guy that at one point in time was regarded as one of the top players. And when the Phillies signed him, that's what they paid him to be. Since he's gotten here, we haven't gotten that. And the longer this goes on, the more that this just confirms it was a bad contract. And to be very clear, a bad contract and a bad signing are different things. Trey's contract, bad contract. Aaron Nola's contract, bad contract. I don't disagree with the signing of those guys or retaining of Nola. But to offer them these massive deals to pay them for what they were and for them to not produce now is they're they're bad contracts. Would have 100% signed Turner when they did. But this team is already forfeiting every fifth game. You can't allow fundamental mishaps to continue to pile up. Trey has to play better defense. They got to run smarter on the bases. The whole team just needs to do the fundamentals correctly. You do the fundamentals right, and everything else starts to fall into place. You continue to try to play fast and loose with what they're doing now, and this becomes a very short playoff run yet again, if they even make it to the playoffs. Because as it stands, that's not even a guarantee. As of the time of this recording, they were three games behind Atlanta. And they sit three games up in the second wildcard spot above Pittsburgh. So as it stands right now, I still think they make the playoffs. But that brings me to the point of how far do they actually go? And with the trade deadline right around the corner, what do they actually need to ensure

Trade Deadline Needs And Targets

they make a decent run? All the inconsistencies right now are just compounding and highlighting the team in a very bad light. And we've talked about it before. Preferably a guy that's got some pop. They need a bottom of the rotation guy, a fourth or fifth starter. And they need another reliever. Between injuries and guys just not panning out, specifically on the pitching staff, it doesn't look good for us. Painter obviously wasn't ready. Walker, they had to cut because he was so bad. And Ronal has been terrible as a step-in. So while back end starters aren't that exciting, you need a guy that can go out there and be competent. I don't expect them to win every single game. I do expect a better performance. And so far, anybody that they've stuck in to be that fifth guy has not panned out. And it doesn't help when you have Nola going before him, also giving us questionable, very, very questionable games. So now the question is, and regardless of what position you're going for, do you trade for a guy that's more controllable? Or do you get maybe a veteran, possibly just a rental? If it's me, uh I would prefer somebody controllable. Take a guy like Reed Detmers. In 24, he absolutely got demolished. He ended the season 4-9 in 17 games, started with a 6.7 ERA. He looked lost out there. In 25, the Angels decided to stick him in the bullpen where he fared a little better. He went 5-3 that year. 3.96 ERA. There was improvement there. This year he's been up and down. He's been in the handful of games. Well, he's 3-6 on the season. He's pitched 114 innings. He's got a 4.16 ERA. He's made progress coming back. I I like him. I think the caliber is there. And he's controllable. So if you trade for him and get him, you can retain him potentially. And you wouldn't have to spend stupid money. Well, depending on how the season shakes out and what he's looking for by the end of the season. You potentially wouldn't have to spend stupid money to keep him. Or maybe we go after a guy that's got more experience, like Robbie Ray. Veterans like that, when they switch teams, sometimes they just get that resurgence, like, oh, my last team is kind of bad on me. This team wanted me, and they're a playoff contender. And that kind of rejuvenates them. And I don't know, they find that extra gear and they pitch a little better. Ray has been pretty solid this season. 8-6, 3.33 ERA. He's been he's been that bottom of the rotation guy. Like that kind of stability that this team needs right now. The Phillies also need some bowplan help. I don't know that they can get anybody that they would desperately need. I've heard rumors that the Padgers are going to be open to trading Mason Miller. While I would love to have a guy like Miller, I don't need to be paying two pretty good closers on this team. It'd be great if Miller wants to come in and be that eighth inning guy. That'd be amazing. And an absolute nightmare for teams that would have to face Miller and then Duran. Or interchange them how you want. Bring Duran in in the eighth and Miller close it out. Either way, like that's a dangerous combo. Not going to happen for the Philz. They could also go after Luke Weaver, who's currently a Met. And just saying that sounded disgusting, so I'm already out on that on that decision. The one of the guys that I like is Alex Vasilla, but I don't see the Dodgers giving him away, especially with Diaz going down. Dodgers are going to need all the help that they can get, so Vesia's probably out. All those relief pitchers, I don't have a warm and fuzzy on a guy that I would love to see. But the third thing that they need is still another outfield bet, preferably a right-handed bat. It would have been nice if Rooker would have been available, but since he got hurt, he's definitely off the board. I'm still a fan of Taylor Ward. I I think he makes sense. Doesn't necessarily have the pop that we would be looking for, but I think he is the optimal fit, at least for this team, and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to go get him. But I want to hear from you guys. If you're Dave Dumbrowski and you're allowed to make one major move, starter, reliever, or outfielder, which one are you choosing? And then what if you're allowed two moves? What changes? Because let's be honest, you're not going to get all three. You're going to get one, you might get two. And if I'm being picky, I'm probably going starting pitcher right now. And I say starting pitcher because as soon as the playoffs start, and this is all the assumption that they don't completely implode and miss the playoffs. As soon as the playoffs start, you're going to have four starters. That guy you acquire, I think could be that fourth starter when you go into the playoffs. And I say that because I still don't like Nola pitching extended games. I would much rather see him come out of the bullpen. Cause him going and inning, maybe two, I think is a lot safer than having him start and blow up in the middle of a playoff game. All right. I'm going to shut it down on the Phillies

LeBron Watch And Sixers Fit

for now. The only other interesting thing in Philadelphia sports right now is the never-ending LeBron watch. Will he be a Sixer? Will he be a Golden State Warrior? Uh at this point, I don't care. I feel like we keep getting the runaround. He comes out and says, uh, it's not going to be too much longer, not too much longer, you know, whatever. Here we are about a week after he already said that, still hasn't decided on where he wants to go. I know some people are leaning more towards the Heats, especially since the Heat leaked a YouTube video saying they sign LeBron. Look, it's like the Netflix thing. Everybody pre-builds these graphics when they start coming coming around. And that's so that they can hit the go button the second the story breaks. Because it takes time to build those graphics. So it's just easier to build them ahead of time and then just you know have them queued up and all you gotta do is hit a button. That does not mean he's going to the heat. That also does not mean that you can rule the heat out. Honest mistake. Well, I look at it as an honest mistake. Somebody's probably getting fired over it. But we'll see what actually happens. But here's a question for you guys. Does getting LeBron actually make them a championship contender? I don't know. I honestly don't know that it makes makes them better. Because he's going to want to come in and he's going to want to lead. That's who he is. That's what he does. Does that jive with the guys that are currently there? Maybe, maybe not. I mean, maybe everybody kind of bows down to the king, but there's no guarantee that that happens. Any other big name dude that they've brought in so far, I don't feel like has jived well with Embiid and has resulted in that other big name guy departing the team while while we kept Embiid. I get why, but it's frustrating, especially because they don't have a championship to show for any of it.

Eagles Camp And O-Line Worries

But a little more exciting, the Eagles are starting training camp soon. And I want to know, what is the single biggest thing you need to see from the Eagles before week one? For me, it's the offensive line. With Stout not being here anymore, with guys coming back from injury, I I need to be comfortable. I I need to have hope that the the line is gonna come back together and they're gonna return to true form. They're gonna play how we know they can play. Because that changes everything. If the line falls apart again, I I don't think we're gonna see a good year out of Hertz or Saquon, and I want to see good years out of both those guys. And since Fry couldn't make it tonight, nobody's here to talk me out of making terrible decisions.

Philly Sports Devil’s Bargain Game

We're gonna play the Philly Sports Devil's Bargain. I'll give you something you desperately want, but there's always a price. The only question is whether you're willing to pay it. Here's your first one. You're guaranteed Dombrowski acquires a dependable starter, but until that move happens, Ronell has to stay in the rotation. I probably accept that. So I would I would take that deal. Here's another one. The Flyers become a playoff team this season, but they do it because of veteran overperformance rather than major development from the young core. They'll be entertaining, they'll win games, they sneak into the playoffs, but the season tells you almost nothing about the rebuild is actually working. This one. This one is tough because you any of the veterans on the team, and I mean, there's not a ton of them. Because it's a fairly young group of guys. I I want to see them continue to play at a high level, and I wouldn't be mad if, say, Coots just went on a stupid tear and just became that that piece where it just brought everything together. I would probably take it only because I feel like the benefits of getting back to the playoffs for this young team continue to build the team. It continues to highlight how to develop the players. Do they need to get somebody else? What are they willing to give up to get that somebody else? Like going on those kind of runs, it helps outline your next season. Whether you win it all or not, you kind of get a grasp of what exactly you need. And since LeBron is still the topic of conversation, how about this one? LeBron signs with the Sixers. But the Sixers cannot make another meaningful roster move for the rest of the offseason. You get LeBron, he's he's the national attention right now, and potentially a piece to give you one absurd championship run. But this is the roster. Yeah, we might change that offseason to the whole season. Like, this is what you got. This is the team you have to work with. Uh as that roster sits, if they have LeBron, I'd I mean, I'm not a huge NBA guy, but I'd be a little more excited to watch the Sixers, especially when the playoffs roll around. Because even if they don't get LeBron, I think they're a playoff team. If they do get LeBron, I want to say that that almost guarantees them a playoff run. And when you look at the that roster with LeBron on paper, it screams playoff team. But you don't know if LeBron's going to be enough. There's no guarantees that Embiid stays healthy. It almost feels like there's a handful of things that are guaranteed in this life: death taxes, Aaron Nola home runs, and Embiid getting hurt. So I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into him staying healthy. I think it could create a real contender, but like I said, like you don't know if LeBron coming in is going to jive with the current personalities on the roster. I probably still take that one, though. Alright, I'm gonna do one more. Let's say Brotherly Love Sports immediately gains 10,000 followers. But every time the Phillies lose, Fry has to come on the show wearing Mets gear as a very high price. I would love to know what you guys think. Sorry, Fry, you're not here to defend yourself, so I'm gonna pick on you. And with that, I will shut that segment down. Alright.

Last week, the question of the week was more open-ended. If you could guarantee the Phillies make only one major move at the trade deadline, would you choose a right-handed bat, a shutdown reliever, or another starting pitcher? And who would you target? Like I said last week, I my target is Taylor Ward. I think he fits the mold of the team. I think he's the best, cheapest option. You don't need a big name.
