Coach Brittany joins us to talk about our tournament in Minnesota and her life as a director of FEVA.
It's funny because it's Harper. And like, if we know Harper like that, I don't care. We can say her name. She can't do anything wrong. It was hilarious. It's so funny because I mean, like, it's on my bingo card. Harper getting into an incident was not on my bingo card. I would not have gotten that. Welcome to Above the Tape, an all-access FIVA podcast. My name is Davis Lauderdale, and I'm your favorite director of Florida Elite Volleyball Academy. But more importantly, I am the host of this year's podcast. As always, I am joined by my co-host. She is the head coach of our top 16 team, as well as the two-time conference coach of the year at Sunlake High School. The woman who I'm really not sure even works here anymore because she hasn't been to a tournament in so long. Everybody, please welcome Elise Zapata.
SPEAKER_05That was fun. That's a while. It's been a while.
SPEAKER_06It's been a while.
SPEAKER_05I'm enjoying my weekends off, too. I bet.
SPEAKER_06Don't get don't get too. You got one, you got one more, right? One more week off?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, this weekend, right? Yeah. All right, good.
SPEAKER_06So once again, please subscribe to our podcast wherever you listen to your podcast. Uh while you're there, like it, subscribe, give us a five-star review. You don't give us a five-star review, you're without a doubt, a hater. I mean, after all, this is the greatest volleyball podcast in Tampa. I think that's undisputed. Yeah. Right? So come on, let's go, guys. Just subscribe. Just click a little button. It's just click a plus. Not much to it. I agree. So just so everybody knows here, we are recording this podcast at 11 o'clock at night. Um, because Elise is going on a vacation to Pittsburgh tomorrow.
SPEAKER_05Um, so I'm not going on a vacation. I'm going for work.
SPEAKER_06Right. Sure. Yeah. I know how your work trip. I know how your work trips go. Yeah, okay. She texted me today. She's like, oh, uh, where'd she go? She goes, oh, we're gonna record on Thursday. We're gonna record on Thursday because I'm not gonna be here tomorrow and Tuesday. I already told you. Torrent Wednesday. I'm like, you did not tell me anything. I did tell you.
unknownYou did not.
SPEAKER_06I did. I checked the text. Checked the I got the receipts. You didn't text me anything, but it's okay.
SPEAKER_05I told you in person.
unknownYeah, right.
SPEAKER_05Or yeah, whatever. I gotta go down this route.
SPEAKER_06Anyway, um, today's episode, it's one we've been looking forward to. Yeah, uh, we were supposed to do this last week, but of course we were so pumped. So we have a very excited, we have a very special guest today. I do. Usually I'm the one who does the announcing of the guests, but today, Elise, I'm gonna pass the torch on to you. All right, thank you.
SPEAKER_05All right, so our special guest today is not only my best friend and is four foot nothing, but has been coaching for 11 years. It is now our newest director at FIVA. She's also currently the head coach at Wesley Chapel High School, where we have refs thinking that her and I are cousins. She has led teams to being district champions from 2021 to 2024, and then being a regional champion in 2022, taking her to a state final four. She was named Coach of the Year SAC East Conference back to back. She was also named the Positive Coaching Alliance Double Goal Regional Coach of the Year in 2022. She was a bid winner with our U-12s in 2025 and took third place at U.S. Navy Nationals, along with being a two-time AAU national champ. Wait, wait. How many? How many national championships? Two. Wow. Welcome to the podcast, Brittany, my best friend Collison. Let's go.
SPEAKER_04Thanks, Bestie. I'm excited to be here. Ooh, I like her voice on this mic. I mean, I'm gonna say I am a little salty though, because David kind of stole this idea from me and you. He did. Totally stole this idea. Listen, he's a good one. And it's week five. I'm I'm just now getting on a week five.
SPEAKER_06We you gotta you gotta act on these ideas. But if I get an idea, I will I will totally steal it.
SPEAKER_05I like how he says if I get an idea.
SPEAKER_06Well, if someone comes up with an idea, I will execute the idea.
SPEAKER_05And look how nice our voice sounds together. Like, talk with me, Brittany. I mean, yeah, we sound pretty great. My voice is a little raspy though. So again, yeah.
SPEAKER_06I mean, if Elise didn't live 85 miles north, we could do this as a three three-man podcast. Listen, listen.
SPEAKER_05I just want to say I wasn't even a part of this podcast until David said, Hey, I have a good idea. And I kind of got it from you and Brittany. Would you want to be a guest? I said a co-host.
SPEAKER_06I said, Would you want to be my co-host? Yes, I'm just gonna be able to do that. I said, would you be the co-host?
SPEAKER_04And then somehow I got booted out of it again. Totally did.
SPEAKER_06But you got enough, you got enough work with uh on FIBA. So I didn't I didn't want to put more on your play.
SPEAKER_05All right, all right, but let's let's talk about everything I just said about her.
SPEAKER_06How freaking incredible is she. That's a pretty amazing. That's amazing. Two years in a row national champion. Yeah, pretty amazing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that is awesome.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and if I knew from the beginning when I was trying to get you to come over here, if I knew that all I had to do was go through Britney, it would have been a lot quicker and a lot easier. I would have had you a year earlier. Yeah, probably. But I didn't really, but I didn't really know Britney. I mean, because you know, we were at the other club, Britney never coached my daughter. So I mean I saw Britney like hanging out with you, like on the bench or whatever, but I didn't really know her.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and every time he said, Are you coming? I'm like, I gotta talk to my girl Brit. I'm not leaving her.
SPEAKER_06Should have gone. I just I thought you were running the show, but I was I was very wrong.
SPEAKER_05You have to realize, like, I was like, I love coaching volleyball, but like I love doing it with my best friend. Oh yeah. So like oh yeah, we wouldn't have left if we weren't gonna leave too. I would have been miserable. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Once once I I mean I once we learned it was a package deal, it was like, all right, well, this is gonna we're gonna we're gonna we gotta go. They knew what to do.
SPEAKER_05They need to go after Britt towards the end of the day.
SPEAKER_06I just didn't know who to I just didn't know who was the one to go after, but I'm glad I'm glad we got it to work out. So anyway, welcome to the show. Um thank you. I'm excited to be here. As is tradition. I have to start I have a joke. Here we go. Now I have saved. This is the best joke up to date. This is a good one.
SPEAKER_05Am I gonna actually laugh this one?
SPEAKER_06This one you're gonna laugh. I haven't laughed yet. It's a little different. I got this it's a little different setup for this one. You guys ready? Yeah. All right, here we go. Think about this. If you're American before you go in the bathroom, and you are American when you leave the bathroom, what are you when you're in the bathroom?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Any ideas?
SPEAKER_06No idea. European. Okay, I can get down with that one. Get it, European. Yeah, I got it. Let's go. That was good. That was good. That's only because I'm here. That's just a Britney. I saved that, I saved that one for Brittany because I knew I knew that one was gonna go. I can get the bathroom. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We'll get into that later. Yeah. If you if you hang around Britney long enough, you'll understand. In the least, in the least two, yeah, for sure. So anyway, let's why we're best friends. Yeah, let's let's go ahead and get started. Um so we gotta talk first, we gotta talk about the weekend. All right.
SPEAKER_05So um the one that I was not at because I was yeah, because you're on vacation.
SPEAKER_06Because you're on vacation. Um, so we were at March Mayhem locally, um, but our all of but our 15 teams um were all in Minnesota for the Northern Lights qualifier, or four of our 15's teams. Um five of our 15, sorry. So He doesn't even know. I don't even know. I wasn't there, so how am I supposed to know? Anyway, um the big news is we got another video. Shout out 15 Kadia. 15 Kadia came through, got themselves a USA bid. Um, I was not there, but I was I know, and I was I'm over here, so you know they had them on, they they were streaming the games, and I guess for the the bid winning game, the something happened with the tripods, they weren't they weren't filming it. So I had to watch on that volley station app, which is like you watch the points, anxiety, and that is miserable. It is so miserable because you have no idea what's happening. All you can see is the point go through, and you're sitting there waiting, and it's like two minutes and nothing is happening, you don't know what's going on. And it was just I was absolutely you know completely stressed out.
SPEAKER_05You know what was crazy though? I like I didn't forget that you guys were there, but I like forgot you guys were there, and I kid you not, I was like, Oh, I wonder if the 15th got a bid. And as I said that, Davis texted the coaches chat and I was like, Okay, there we go.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I was I was literally in my living room jumping up and down like I was at the game, like we were it was so exciting, I was so happy for them. Um yeah, that's awesome. I love that team.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I mean that's those girls are just I just love them.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I mean, you were at the game, right? Ready? Yes. Tell me about it.
SPEAKER_05Did you not see her in the video jumping up and cheering like a little kid?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, thank you. Um it was it was great. Um, it was very stressful. Um, but you know, they pulled it together, they pulled through, and we're super pumped for them. So, and now I'm really excited because I get to go too. So I know for me.
SPEAKER_06I was talking to Cotton I was talking to Cottie about that day. I gotta get you guys reservations right now, of course.
SPEAKER_05You know, just just add another person on there. Yeah, we'll just I'm getting in Chicago. I'm gonna tell my 16th, hey, my best friend gets to be at USAV Nationals. We gotta be there together. We've never done that before.
SPEAKER_06I mean no pressure, but that's that's bid number four for the season, which is our our our record so far. We had our most bids we had in the season was last year with three. We're at four. We're expecting I expect nothing less. I expect the no one for you guys. And I think Britney's 15s team has a shot, and I think Michaela's 14 teams have a shot. Yep. I think you know, 17s have a shot. Everybody, we still have more on the table. We're not we're not done yet.
SPEAKER_05No, I don't think we're done yet either. No, we have we have some more chance. I think we're gonna have a good time in Chicago.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but I think, you know, kind of going back to that that Cadia's team getting the bid, um you know, one of the things that's really impressive is you know, they they did it without Mac. Um, you know, Mac's one of their outside hitters. She broke her foot in kind of a freak accident serving. Um it's funny, we not funny, we we lost two girls um to broken foots serving in like a week's time frame.
SPEAKER_05Oh, and Matt, I was literally right in front of Matt when it happened. Yeah, it was she just jumped, landed, and it was one of those things that the way she reacted, I was like, Oh, and I was talking to her, I said sometimes, you know, when you land, yeah, you just freak yourself out and you know, and you get emotional about it. And then she said, But then you kind of need to take a deep breath and you're like, okay, I'm good. Yeah. And then when I saw her leaving, I was like, Oh, oh, this is probably a lot worse than we think it is.
SPEAKER_06Well, she was she was really, I mean, she was in a lot of pain, but you know, every girl is different. You know, we've had girls that have just fallen down and have been crying for two hours, you know what I mean? So we don't I didn't know. I mean, she's you know, and then and they of course they all say, Oh, I heard a pop. Yeah. Um, and of course, you're like past the time, I think you can imagine that like 95% of the time it's there's no pop.
SPEAKER_05But there was a but there probably was a pop.
SPEAKER_06There probably wasn't bad. So for them to go out and win without her, you know, shout out to Arden for stepping in and playing and playing a great doing a great job. Um, that's that that team's fourth year in a row to get a bid. So the team, the girls have changed. We've you know, we've added, we've lost, we've but it's the core of that team, you know, the Ashland and the Kinsley and the Alana and the Mac, they've been there the whole time.
SPEAKER_05The defense of this team is just incredible, and I don't think people realize how much defense is gonna take you. Yeah, they're they're how far you can go with a great defense.
SPEAKER_06Because they're not they're not huge at all by any means, they're usually one of the smaller USA teams. Uh what's that saying? Defense wins games, defense wins, defense wins championships. I was like, offense wins games, defense wins championships. And that's what I mean, that's what they do. But that was that was a great performance. Um, and it's and one of the things going back to Mac, I thought was really impressive, just it shows the kind of teammate she is, is that even though she's hurt and obviously wasn't gonna obviously wasn't gonna play, she still wins. Yeah, yeah, that's that's incredible. She went to Minnesota now. I by no means do we expect everybody to do that. I mean, there's obviously there's money involved, and I mean you know, that's a long way to go to not play. But the fact that she went there, um, it kind of shows the kind of teammate she is and how close that they are as a team.
SPEAKER_05Good for you, Matt. Good job, Matt. I love Matt.
SPEAKER_06Get yourself better. So yeah, so we're we're super duper proud of them. Um Brittany, you're on top of Katia's bid, your your 15s team, they did all right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, we took fifth place, so that's awesome. I would say that I don't know. I think this year, between my 13s and my 15s, for whatever reason, they have some plot to try and like give me a heart attack this year or something because you went to three every game but one.
SPEAKER_06Every game but two. Two. Okay, every one of them.
SPEAKER_04Six out of our eight games went three sets. And I I don't know.
SPEAKER_05It's just it's you basically worked an extra day. It was so much.
SPEAKER_06I was I'm like watching. I'm I'm watching on uh they were they streamed those on YouTube, and I was like, I was just it was just too much. It was like every game goes straight. You could blow them out in the first set, you went the second.
SPEAKER_04You could get and then we were losing the first set, and then we blow them out in the second set, and then we're like, do we want to play hard in the third? Let's see. But you know, my third team said that to me at Sunshine too. Yeah, we went like so. What was your record for the weekend? Seven and one.
SPEAKER_05Oh wow, so you didn't lose until not lose championship day.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we lost in the quarterfinals to a really strong team. Um, they had like a six-two outside who was just like banging balls over our team. Sandbaggers. That's the that's what we do, right?
SPEAKER_06I always always, you know, you over How heavy was that sandbag? Oh yeah. You always read on social media when someone, you know, when a team wins, oh, they were sandbagged. Well, like, yeah, I mean, somebody's gotta win. Somebody's gotta win. It's gonna happen. Yeah, I mean, it's gonna win. I don't know if it's really sandbagging, if it's just, you know, just the better team, the better team.
SPEAKER_04Well, they slow up, they ended up losing in the finals, so I guess they weren't they all another sandbagging team. Yeah, I mean I mean we hung up, we hung with them in the second set, but yeah, you know.
SPEAKER_06It is what it is, what it is. You know, we've been uh we've been accused of sandbagging before, so it happens. Sometimes you don't know when you register for the tournaments, you don't really know how strong your team is. That happened with one her 12s team um the first year. It's like they they weren't even the beginning of the year, they weren't that good. You register with them, not that we weren't good, we didn't think they were gonna be that good. We register for all the tournaments, and then next thing you know, you add a couple girls come in, a couple girls develop quicker than you expect, and next thing you know, we're like register for AU and classic. And we're like, we're gonna destroy everybody.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and we did. We kind of did, yeah.
SPEAKER_06We pretty much did, we pretty much. But last year we didn't know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but at the end of the day, the girls still have to do the job, they still have to mentally be there. So, like, regardless, people on say sandbagging or whatever. Yeah, was a lot of pressure too.
SPEAKER_06When you're expected to just to beat everybody, and half of them are pressure based 10 and 11 years old when that was happening.
SPEAKER_05Like, yeah, that that team they cry if their shoes, you know, they trip over their own shoe.
SPEAKER_06Like, yeah. So um, so yeah, I know you mentioned that Britney's been coaching for 10 years. So you've been 11 years, sorry. You've been in club volleyball. Yeah, get it. So you've been in club volleyball for a long time, you know, longer. Both of you two have been in club volleyball longer than me. Um, so for Brittany, you know, this is obviously your first year as a director.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06So really, I mean, the the thing for us was, you know, we had, you know, we're obviously continue to grow, and we just kind of decided, you know, me, Cody, and Fernando kind of talked and we're like, to be able to still provide the level of service that we want to provide, it's just becoming too much even for three of us. So we kind of brought, you know, Britney was the obvious choice. Um, and so we brought Britney on board, and it was really just to kind of help with everything.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so Britney kind of does what Davis is not saying, it's it was really to help Davis out because Davis just stresses and he cries.
SPEAKER_04He actually does not want to give up some things, and like just give me some stuff to do.
SPEAKER_06So now I feel bad. Like it's not that I don't want to, it's just I mean I know Katia works her hard. So I'm like actually like trying to be nice. Davis doesn't do anything, it's really Brittany doesn't have to be.
SPEAKER_05I can take some loads off you guys, no big deal.
SPEAKER_06You can I'm gonna I I'm gonna start giving you more social media. That's that's what I'm saying. That's the thing I wanna. Brittany's good at that. I can't know.
SPEAKER_05She's taught me a thing or two.
SPEAKER_06I know. Yeah, so that yeah, but she's she's been on a serious note, she has been excellent. Like the best, one of the best decisions we've made is bringing her on. Not to mention that she does own a shirt company, an embroidery company.
SPEAKER_04Her mom does, um no, we're partners on the business. And I do most of the embroidery.
SPEAKER_06Tropical vice training, they do an out I'm just I'm plugging you guys right now. They do an outstanding job. Um they they embroider all of our stuff, they do all of our shirts, our all of our gear, super fast, super easy, organized. I don't know how they do it, but they do a great job. So you need something, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Hit me up. I got you.
SPEAKER_06But just remember that I'm first in line, like everybody else. Yeah, that's true. Fever FEVA always comes first, so you know. So yeah, I mean it's so how has it been for you, you know, transitioning to a director versus just being a coach?
SPEAKER_04Um, I mean, it's been great. I'm having the time of my life. It's very entertaining at these tournaments. There's a lot going on. I feel like I'm needed everywhere. I love it. Um I know my mom was like, I know you don't really like confrontation. I'm like, no, but it's kind of fun. She's like, I'm feeding off this. I I'm just like, there's never really a dull moment. So I think I think for me too busy.
SPEAKER_06For me, that's always been kind of the the thing Davis doesn't like. That's no, well, I don't like confrontation. No, I hate confrontation. But I mean, for me, the the thing that's always been the most the the the part that makes this job never boring is there's always something happening. Yeah, always. Always. It never ever ever stops. So you know, I mean, it it yeah, we don't obviously don't like confrontation. Like we hate it when people, you know, have we have issues or people leave the team or or whatever, whatever. But if if you didn't have that, it kind of would probably be pretty boring. If there was no tea to spill, it would be pretty boring. There's always tea. There's always tea.
SPEAKER_05I think we all live for the tea. We do. What do they definitely do? Clock it. Yeah, yeah. Clock it.
SPEAKER_06You know, and and you know, this year in particular, I mean, we've had a lot of a lot of crazy stuff happen. Oh my god. Every weekend it's something. Every single weekend we've had something.
SPEAKER_05Listen, I'm gonna say people take a chill pill, but don't because I'm enjoying it.
SPEAKER_06Well, and I mean, like, I I honestly feel kind of bad for a couple weeks ago when we went to Boston. You know, we left Britney um by herself. So we had like three teams and three, three teams in Boston. Brittany had like 20 at Wiregrass. Yeah, three directors, guys.
SPEAKER_04So and I was all by myself, be by herself.
SPEAKER_06So I'm gonna I'm gonna go ahead. Okay, I'm gonna interrupt myself here. I'm gonna I'm gonna do a very important public service announcement. This announcement applies to every single podcast we're gonna have from now until the end. So when we started this podcast, there were two reasons why we started the podcast, right? Number one, to be entertaining, right? Yep. That is we want to be entertaining. This is supposed to be fun. Nobody's gonna listen. We don't, it's it's not going to be a one hour a week commercial for saying how great FIVA is. It's just that's not what people I don't think that's what people are. We are great, but it's not. I mean we are, but look, we are we are human beings, we have fun, we have we are imperfect. There's you know, it's just this is supposed to be entertaining. Yeah. Um, and number two is just to give a little bit of insight to the club. Yeah, some of the things that happen in club volleyball that happens to us, but it happens to everybody else as well. You know, it's not just the things that we deal with, you know. I talk to other club directors and other coaches, other clubs, they deal with the same thing. Yeah, you know, my my son goes to a basketball club and I talk to the owner, the director there, same stuff. I mean, all the things that we happen to us, same thing. And so, you know, it's just one of those things. And um, so anyway, and yeah, in order for us to be called an all-access FIFA podcast, we have to give some access. We can't just sit there and say how everything is you know butterflies and rainbows. And we do have to talk about you know some of the things that happen. Um that means we do have to talk about players, parents, head coaches, yeah, other clubs. That's just part of it. And I really, really hope that everybody can remember the purpose of this podcast, not get offended. We will not say players or parents' names. We're not gonna do that. I don't I don't think that's appropriate. They'll probably know we're talking about them, but it's it is again for entertainment. It doesn't mean anything, doesn't mean we can't say that.
SPEAKER_05What we're trying to say is take a chill pill pill and just enjoy it and laugh with us. That's it.
SPEAKER_06We might mention club names, but we won't mention just like we're the better red. Duh. So you guys figure that one out. So I didn't want to get that part out of the way so we can we can continue our conversation and hopefully have nobody get all get all upset about it.
SPEAKER_05So I think Britt needs to tell the story.
SPEAKER_06We will. But and uh and I'm go ahead, go ahead. You told us. Wait, which one?
SPEAKER_05What happened?
SPEAKER_04While you guys were on?
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_04I think that one's the best. The one at Wire Graph. The two incidents of wire. Yeah. So um And we're not gonna say who did it, what clubs. We were like sitting, I was sitting on a bench and I happened to see uh a parent, you know, go and tap a child. Um wait, which one both of the incidents do we want me to talk about? Well, the same thing. It is the same thing, yeah. Both incidents have to deal with a parent going up to a child and telling them how to do their job as a line judge.
SPEAKER_06So in the middle of a match.
SPEAKER_04So the one one specifically I was there, I witnessed it. I have no idea who the parent is, what club they're from. Um, but basically they just went up to the kid and tried to tell him that their call was wrong, um, and which is totally inappropriate. So audacity. Um I wouldn't I don't have children, but if I did, I wouldn't want them going up and tapping my player. Well, yeah, not just beat that I know, even any of my own players and their the coach definitely jumped. Up and ran over there. Yeah. Um, and I also kind of went over there. So um, yeah, that was crazy.
SPEAKER_06I have to say, I mean, I think every single volleyball, every parent needs to hear these words. It doesn't matter what club, what age, or anything else, you cannot talk to another player that's not your child, yeah, or about another player that's not your child. That will never end well. No, because people are obviously, and for good reason, very protective of their children. And it's all you know, these kids they don't want to lion judge, they don't want to do that, but it's part of the job. Yeah, they do it, some do it better than others. I would be a terrible line judge.
SPEAKER_04Well, I mean, this kid in particular was doing an excellent job. All of her calls were right, by the way. I was sitting right there. Um but that wasn't that wasn't even the best part of the weekend. There was another incident, which was the same thing, and I get a text and it's like, Can you please come over here? Um, parents are about to start fighting, and I'm like, Oh god. So FIBA Fight Club. It was uh pretty insane just because again, another parent came up to a player, and then you know, the that child's parents saw incidents and one and of course went and said something. I would say something too. That's you can't talk to other people's children like that. You can't do that. Didn't one of them touch the channel? Yeah, touch touched her, tapped her on the shoulder. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, like no, no, you're gonna fist at that point. As a parent, do you want another parent coming up to your child and doing that? Like you just gotta think before you do things.
SPEAKER_06I just I appropriate can't imagine being so up. I've been very upset in volleyball. Very upset. I have never been so upset that I would even consider walking up to another kid and tapping them on the and tapping them and say that was a terrible call.
SPEAKER_04You need to all make faces and whatever and turn around and all that, but yeah, no, you can't do that.
SPEAKER_06We we save all that anger for the for the up refs. Yeah, you know, but oh speaking of up reps, I did get clarification on if you guys listened last week, the Michaela call. The call where basically the pass went over. So I I I sought out Jose. I don't know if you guys know Jose, but he's the Jose is outstanding. He is to, in my opinion, the best ref in Florida. Um, he's also a head ref sometimes. So I saw him at Marquee.
SPEAKER_04He likes me. I think he likes all of them.
SPEAKER_06I think Jose likes everybody. He loves Jose is the nicest guy ever. See, they they all don't hate me. They don't all hate you. There's a there's a couple that like you, but no, I saw I saw, you know, we saw Jose. I saw Jose, sought him out, showed him the video, and I was like, what is the rule? So what I didn't know is there is no, so he was saying the big thing is the distance from the net of the blocker. And I was like, what is the distance? He goes, There is no set distance. So it is up to your judgment, whether it's an inch, a foot, three foot. It is basically that part is a judgment call by the referee, which I think is ridiculous, but that is the rule. Um he did say, he said, No, I can't I can't tell for a hundred percent because of the camera angle, but he said it's not. Of course he's gonna say that. Yeah, because he doesn't, I mean he's gotta be you know politically correct here, but he's like, in my opinion, that was a bad call. He said you should have protested. And I said, Well, if you protest, what about losing the point? And he goes, It's all about how you word it. So he said, You have to say it's a misinterpretation of the rule that will avoid you from losing the point. So just so everybody knows, misinterpretation of the rule is all about the wording. I thought that was put that one in my back pocket, put that in your back pocket. It's an extraordinary.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna write it on my hand. I used to heard of it. Wait, what was that? Hold on, that is yeah, so misinterpretation of the rule.
SPEAKER_04I'll be I'll be like, why it's a little smudge. Sorry.
SPEAKER_06So anyway, got that cleared up. I was very happy about that. And it's funny, it happened that same play happened twice that same day. Once again, one one of the times was against us. The girl was, I'm not kidding you, she was five foot tall. She jumped the overpass, she jumped up a foot below the net, swung into the net, and then popped it up, no call. Didn't call it then on David's team later on, one of our girls goes up over the net, hits the top of the net, ball pops up, and he calls it. And I told David, I was like, let's protest it. It was zero zero in the first set. He was like, I don't want to protest, I don't want to ruin that. I was like, No, we can't. I want to start it off hot. I know, and that so we did not protest, and we ended up losing the game. So I was at one point really made the difference. Well, I know it was funny because like at about you know, they started out slow, so at about 15 to 9, he's like, I should have protested. I was like, I told you you should be. Talk about getting a ref to not like you. And I I did get my first yellow card. Did you guys know that? Did you know that? I did not know that. In that same game, um, the ref calls. I, you know, I was standing up, you know, coaching, like I do. Um anyway, the ref comes over and calls calls the girl over, calls the captain over, and pulls out a yellow card. He said, Oh, that your coach cannot sit, he has to sit down and can't move. And I looked at him and I was like, okay. So I went to the the head table. So I went and tattled, like I do. And then uh and so yeah, so basically I went to there, told him, they were like, the guy kind of rolled his eyes, like, all right, I got it. He came over, the guy called him over, told him again, you know, that he can't move. He's like, that's high school rules. Yeah, it's like oh which is a stupid rule. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05They and then the whole one libero in high school thing too sucks. Yeah, but that that's a whole nother conversation.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. So I got my first yellow card, I tried to get it rescinded, they did not, they laughed at me. So, anyway, I almost forgot one key element of the weekend. Uh, you know, going back to Britney's 15s team at Northern Lights, um you had an incident, I heard.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we did.
SPEAKER_06Um This is the funniest thing ever.
SPEAKER_04This team that we played was the most obnoxious team I have ever played in my life. Um, they were just like cheering super loud when we scored a point. So like when we scored? When we scored. So like my team would score a point, and then they would we would cheer, and then they would cheer 10 times louder. Um, and we were all like kind of confused at first, and then I was like, okay, well, they're just trying to taunt us. Like the way you shut them up is like you go out there and beat them. Um, so yeah, so then one of my players, I guess, said something along the lines of I'm hungry like a dog, feed me the ball.
SPEAKER_05I love that.
SPEAKER_04And I know it was awesome. And I like that. I guess the player on the one of the players on the other side kind of said something along the lines of, wow, I just got secondhand embarrassment from that after they're over there acting the way they're acting, but okay. Um so then after the game, when we obviously beat them, um, because I won all my three set matches that they made me play this weekend, you know. Um after we beat them, we're going through the line. I guess my player said something along the lines of well, who's embarrassed now, or something along the lines of something like that. And I like that. And I didn't have no idea what's going on. I didn't know any of that's going on during the game. So um my assistant is standing at the net and she's like, All right, what happened? And then like the other girl's like pointing, and then my player runs back up to the net and I guess it's something like, Well, she started it, she said it first, blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_06So it was just so it's it's funny, it's funny because it's Harper, and like if you know Harper, like that I don't care, we can say her name, she didn't do anything wrong.
SPEAKER_03She didn't, it was hilarious.
SPEAKER_06It's so funny because I mean, like, if on my bingo card, Harper getting into an incident was not on my bingo card, I would not have gotten there.
SPEAKER_04I was literally standing at the bench at this point, just kind of watching everything happen, and Tina was just kind of over there dealing with it, and I was just laughing because I was like, I don't even know what is going on.
SPEAKER_06I get I get the line again.
SPEAKER_05Feed me the ball.
SPEAKER_04Uh I'm hungry like a dog, feed me the ball. Something like that.
SPEAKER_05I don't know if they're gonna get that on that shirt.
SPEAKER_06Where do you make shirts, right? Yeah, I got you. I got you, and then on the back it says, Who's embarrassing now?
SPEAKER_04It was legit so funny. Then after the game, I guess one of the girls had her backpack like over by our bench. So then now two players and one of the coaches come walking like all okay instead of walking around the whole court, which is what I would have done if my player had a backpack over by the wall where we were sitting, you know, be respectful. They come walking like right by our bench, and I can see my girls like starting to give them a little bit of the evil eye, and I'm like, oh, here we go, here we go. The world is all over. Yeah, I was like, ain't no way this coach and her girls are coming all the way over here, and then I realized they were just trying to get the girls' stuff, but like just walk around the court. You didn't have to cut through all of us taking our stuff off. Yeah, I'm entitlement.
SPEAKER_06That's so fun. I was on the I'm on the you know, I'm on their group chat as well. And you know, Brittany texts, she does this, she goes, Oh, it was an incident with uh Harper got into it with another girl, and then I was and then it was like silent, like nothing. I'm like, I wanted to be a cliffhanger. I was yeah, she totally left me hanging. I'm like, hey, what's what's what's the deal here? What's the deal? And so I was like, she's like, you know, told me the story. I was like, there's no way. I there's no way that this is happening this is happening.
SPEAKER_05Out of the whole situation, I'd be really pissed about the coach and the player grabbing the back. I know it was just such a title.
SPEAKER_04It's like whatever the whole match was just wild. Like, even my parents are like, What in the world was that? I'm like, I have no idea. And the ref, the ref didn't do anything at one point. Three players on that team, like back to back to back, dropped down and tied their shoes. Like, obviously, we're doing it on purpose now. Yeah, every single point. So then one of my players in between the sets was like, Oh, I'm gonna tie my shoes super slow. And I'm like, all right, girl, come on. Like, it's we were literally the second to last court in the gym, and we didn't get out there until like 11 o'clock at night on the first night, and then had to go to AM Wait.
SPEAKER_06But that's a good point, though. I mean, here in like New Orleans, yeah, it was rough. But that's a but but you know, one thing that it has in common is if you have a ref that doesn't control the game, the game can get out of hand. That's in any sport, you know, it's like that in any sport.
SPEAKER_05I always say half the incidents like come because there's people not doing their job, right?
SPEAKER_04Like, well, that's the same thing with that wiregrass tournament. If that ref would have just handled it right then and there, then they should have got somebody to escort the parent out who touched a player who was line judging. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_05Um, then you know, or the worst, you know what the ones like at me mad when players get injured for something that could have been resolved, right? It's like yeah, they keep landing on my player, they keep landing on my player, they don't do anything, they don't do anything, they don't do anything, and then what a few points later, my player's down, yeah. And it's like, come on, yeah, like I get you don't like people have a problem for whatever reason, they don't like to be wrong or admit when they're wrong, yeah. And then this situation comes, it's like, oh my bad coach, I'll keep an eye on it. That's all you gotta say.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, at least pretend. Ah, something. I know, I know.
SPEAKER_05People are just so sensitive, yeah. Especially the refs. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06We're never gonna get a ref on this show, by the way. I want to get Jose on, but he's not gonna come into this firestorm. He's gonna be like, damn. I'll be nice, I'll play nice. Yeah. So so both of you guys have, you know, been in club volleyball, obviously, like I said, longer than me. Um, but I am a little bit older than both of you and have been around sports for a really long time. Um, you know, when I grew up, really parents weren't involved in their kids' sports. I mean, if anything, you know, for me, I was happy if my if my parents just showed up to the game. Like that was it. Like I they didn't there was no other involvement. Um now parents are considerably more involved. Um, you know, overall, I do think that's a great thing. It's not a bad thing that parents are involved. Like I wish my kids probably wish my parents were a little more involved. Yeah. However, with this, all this with what's happening in others, there's been a shift to where the child seems to never be wrong. And that's what I don't like. Uh that's where I think we have a lot of problems. Um, you know, parents have gotten to the point where they're gonna defend their child over the coach, over the teacher, over the director, over anything else, um like as if as if their child is never wrong. And every child, you know, is like every child makes mistakes. It doesn't mean they're a bad kid, it doesn't mean you're a bad parent, but I think so parents are so you know, not and again, I'm not I'm I'm generalizing, not all parents are like this, but there's a lot of parents that are like that. Um do you guys agree? I mean, am I am I wrong on this? They're soft. That's one way, that's one way to think about it. I was trying to be a good thing.
SPEAKER_04They are definitely a lot different than even when we were growing up. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05I I kid you not, I can remember high school like getting spit on my face from the coach yelling at me so much. Like I I came from a very competitive athletic family where we were pretty good at sports, right? My parents were not afraid if I was playing like crap, to yell at my coach saying, Why is she still in there? Take her out. Like they and not saying that happened often, but when it did, my parents were like chew her out, like yeah, and not in a like you're doing bad, at least. It's just like there's other people that could probably go do the job, but you're struggling right now, and get it together, go take a deep breath, drink some water, whatever, yeah, and then get back out there, but like yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, and there's a there's a difference too between you know coaching hard and abuse. Obviously, abuse is wrong. 100% all the time, you know, you can't there's obviously a line. You don't right, you know, you know. But yeah, I I think the the biggest thing that we've been getting, we've gotten a couple of times lately is you know, you singled my child was singled out. It's like, well, your child was singled out because they were misbehaving or they weren't doing what their job. That's not single, that's coaching.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06And and so it now it's like, you know, everything's gotta be, I guess they want everything to be so general, but there's nothing wrong with saying, hey, Elise, you're not doing what you're supposed to do. Get out there and do it. That's not singling out, that's good coaching. Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_04But it it's I mean, I don't remember my mom ever having a conversation with my coaches in that type of way, like reverting anything like that.
SPEAKER_06Like I can't even imagine asking my mom to have a conversation. I would be more because but she would never do it, even if I my mom or dad would never do it. Like, I I just I just can't wrap my head around that. But again, I mean there's there's probably a happy medium. There's probably a happy medium in there from what but I I I think it's just our generation grew up with our parents not being involved, and now we're coming in saying, Well, I'm not gonna do that, and then we just get over overly involved, you know. Yeah, yeah, maybe. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I feel like these days the kids all want to be on a top-level team, but they don't want to put the effort into actually or the extra work, yeah. The extra work because it it takes more than just your three practices a week. Like you've got to put in stuff outside of practice too. Yep. Um, you know, agility, speed training, strength training, stuff like that. Yeah, more reps, whatever. Yeah. Uh I don't know.
SPEAKER_05I just know when Lele starts playing sports, if Britney ain't yelling at her, Cody ain't doing it. Like, I even want to hear Fernando yell at Layle in the future. It's funny when I'm gonna be like, You guys need to stop being soft. You made me do it to your daughter, you gotta do it to mine now.
SPEAKER_06Well, like whenever you're like chewing out Emma, I'll always I'll I'll always kind of look at Coddy. And Cody has got the biggest grin. Like, it's like she's proud. Like somebody else is. I think because of what we do, like, you know, with you know, my son plays club basketball, and it gives you a different perspective. It gives me a totally different perspective, and and I think I'd be this way a little bit anyway, but even more so now. I'm like, you know, like tonight, I went to his practice tonight, and I mean the coach was ripping them. I mean, he was ripping. They were, I mean, he, you know, the the the the group did not perform well. They weren't paying, they weren't focused. They, you know, they just came off spring break and they weren't and they weren't doing a good job. And I mean, they spent almost the entire practice, you know, doing different types of punishment. Yeah, and I just thought it was great. You know, I mean it's what they it's what it's what it is. That's gonna make him tougher. If they don't want to get punished, then do better. Yeah, it's it's it's more effort, and that but that's at the end of the day, like I was telling him, I was like, I know you're tired, I know you're sore, I know you don't like this, but it's gonna make you better. Those those it's gonna make you better, yeah, you know. That's so yeah.
SPEAKER_05There is some kids that are are softer out there nowadays, but you still have those kids that are really dedicated and they love it. You know, you know your audience, right? You you learn that as a coach, you understand like who you can like get down, let's let's do this, let's get going. And again, it's not like you suck, you're bad at this. It's always like, I know you can do better. Yeah, this is how you're gonna go do better, right? I know you can do this. Yeah, so why are you not doing it? Yeah, you can't wrong about that.
SPEAKER_06You you can't yell at a five-foot kid for not spiking them on a 10-foot line. Yeah, you know what I mean. Like that's unreasonable. How'd you miss that block? Right. You you can't do that. But you know, talking about dedication, you know, look at like going back to the 15th team. How many times do those girls mispractice? How many girls on your 16s mispractice? They those girls, the the when I do, I'm I'm texting them, calling them like, hey, are you okay? Those top-level kids, they don't mispractice. And they don't not only do they not mispractice, they do all the extra stuff, you know, and that's what that's part of what makes them so good. And you know, it's a it's it is a way of life. Like as a parent, as a kid, like you have to be dedicated. Like I think, I take Jordan to play basketball every almost every morning, not tomorrow, but almost every morning before basketball, we shoot around for an hour, every single morning. And then of course he has his practice, he has his trainer because that's what it takes. And you know, it's just it's just kind of just kind of part of the deal. You know, but we've had just this year, you know, we've had parents quit because well kids quit because of their parents making them quit because things weren't going their way. You know, usually it's like playing time or yeah, you know, being singled out.
SPEAKER_05You know, at the same time, like if your daughter's happy, that's you know, let them be happy if if that means they know they're playing less than others. Yeah. How about earn it?
SPEAKER_06How about earn more playing time? And and and tell them that. And what make doesn't make any sense to me is you know, you pay this tuition, you still pay the whole tuition, and you're upset because you're not playing. So then you quit where you're not playing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, now you can't play anywhere.
SPEAKER_06So can you anybody explain how that makes any sense? Like, that makes zero sense. You can't play anywhere. I mean, at least at least practice. I mean, at least I would, you know, I mean, like you're pay you paid for it. I don't I don't know. I guess they have a a disposable income that I'm not, you know, unfortunately not. I want that. I want that kind of money too. But you know, it's just but you know, all this kind of stuff, it does prepare them for the world, the it prepares them for adversity, which is part of the world. Yeah. And if you're if every time as a child something goes wrong, oh I'm not playing, I should be playing, well, you're gonna quit. We're gonna walk, you're gonna walk off the court. Every time you you do that, what's gonna happen when you're at your job? You know, and something doesn't go your way. Are we just gonna quit? You know, I mean what what are we doing here? I mean, yeah, that's what they do these days.
SPEAKER_05They just kind of say I'll just get fired a Hollister and I'll go to Amber Copper. Yeah, well, you know, and then I'll go to AirPods.
SPEAKER_06Oh my gosh. But it's funny, you know, going back going back to the um, I just remember this, going back to the Harper situation. My daughter's gonna kill me for the story, but I'm gonna tell I'm gonna tell her anyway. I'm gonna tell her anyway. You're gonna know, you're gonna remember it. So I will not say names. But girl, so the the point of this is how different girls are than boys, as far as dealing with that. So, you know, like you know, talk about how they were talking trash behind the net, and to me, the whole thing is funny. Like, yeah, we do not condone you know fighting in any way in FIVA. You know, we we kind of made light of the of the situation in New Orleans, but it wasn't funny, like it was a serious situation that again, all access, we're gonna tell you about it. But in no way did we take any pleasure out of it. In fact, it took us a long time to like kind of calm down and mellow down from it. But the way boy like you watch the boys, they talk so much trash the whole game, yeah, and it is hilarious. But they talk, they talk, they talk, and then they're they shake hands and and you know hug each other up after the game. Yeah, girls could never.
SPEAKER_05I I disagree because that's how it was in New Orleans with us that team that we got, you know, in the little conference.
SPEAKER_06I just had trash talk though.
SPEAKER_05No, they were going, like they were they were chirping. Were they?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I didn't I didn't see that.
SPEAKER_05And it was like it was fun though, because at the end of the game, like the girls were like legit like hey, good job, like admitting like the other team did good, and they enjoyed like, yeah, we lost, but like it was fun. It was probably the the most fun both teams probably had up until that weekend, and then parents had to ruin it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but you know, but girls will hold some grudges. Oh yeah, yeah. Now it's like, oh, so we don't like them that we were like chill. When Kylie was playing, there was a girl on her team, but they just didn't vibe. Kid wasn't a bad kid, my daughter's not a bad kid, but they just weren't vibing, and it was kind of taking place the whole year, and so finally at some point, you know, the other girl said, you know, I think Kylie said, Come on, guys, we gotta let's get we gotta side out. And then I guess the other girl was like, Well, we need to get a pass first. That's all that's all that was said. That was all that was said, like it wasn't anything terrible, yeah. That was six or seven years ago, something like that. Six, seven. I'm leaving now. To this day, if I say that girl's name to Kylie, oh she gets mad, she will get upset. Oh, yeah, and my daughter is I'm I'm Not she's a sweetheart, but she has still held a grudge over all these. And I I keep telling the girl, you need to let that go. You need to let that go. But girls, a lot of girls, my daughter, I guess, is one of them. They will hold some grudges. Okay, another story. This is this is hilarious. I can't. This is David's story time. This is my this is a story time. So close to midnight. I know. We're at a well I know, and I got home at 2 a.m. last night and had practice. I'm dying.
SPEAKER_04I feel like I got ran over by a semi-truck out in Minnesota. I don't know what. Maybe it was chest bumping Tina 50 times for our new Ace cheer. It's all that three said we're gonna do that. Yeah. Yeah. Or carrying my 50-pound backpack down downtown Minnesota sprinting to make our flight yesterday. I don't know. But but you got dying.
SPEAKER_06You got here much better than what they said.
SPEAKER_04I wish I would have got stuck there.
SPEAKER_06Then I could have stayed and had a steak and had a stake nap and sleep and instead I was uncomfortable riding on that flight.
SPEAKER_04Oh man.
SPEAKER_06So we okay, here's my story. So we're we're we're at a boys' tournament and we had two of our um we had one of our girls players there and she was watching the boys, and then I was like, hey, your teammate, you know, Suzy, is coming later. And she goes, and I go, she goes, I can't stand her. I said, we I just do not like her. And she's like, and then she goes, Oh, but don't worry. To her face, I'm super nice. That's that's that's just I just thought that was so funny.
SPEAKER_04I mean at least she's being nice to her face, though.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. I mean, she to her don't be rude, don't ruin it, uh ruin a team of chemistry, right? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04So to her, she was doing good, but it was just so oh, but don't worry, I'm gonna be nice to her face.
SPEAKER_06I'm always nice to her face.
SPEAKER_04Well that's good because you can't have no drama on the court. I know.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's just like you know, you had a one of your 18s teams where these two girls could not stand each other, but they were pepper partners for two years straight.
SPEAKER_05I can't remember who that was.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah, I'll tell you, I can't believe you don't know who it was. They could not stand each other. They both talked about each other. Oh yeah. And that's another one. To this day, if you mention each other them to each other, they will get they will just oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04We definitely mentioned that this weekend, I'm not gonna lie. Really?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. I mean, but it's it's just it's just the girl thing. But it was so why are they pepper partners? Why are they pepper partners when they can't stand each other? They played together for three years, three straight years, and they were pepper partners every single time.
SPEAKER_05I you know, and I didn't know about that again, you know, me being oblivious to things. I didn't know about that until like I didn't either. I was like, no.
SPEAKER_06When I heard about it, I was like, but wait a minute. They pepper together before every single match. I was like, they're like besties. Best friends.
SPEAKER_05They're like, no, Lise, they're not besties. I said, well, I don't care. They're we're winning.
SPEAKER_06But as long as you're gonna I mean it wasn't too much of a it wasn't really a distraction. I mean, they got you don't have to like each other. I didn't like all my teammates.
SPEAKER_04No, but you have to be nice to each other.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you have to respect each other, you gotta respect what your team's trying to do, you gotta respect your coach and all come together, and I'm sure you'll still have a great time playing volleyball. But you just don't want to be best friends with them.
SPEAKER_06All right, all right, before we close, I have uh compiled a list of changes that I think would make volleyball even better than what it is. So um it's five, it's five things. And so I'm interested in how you guys as you know volleyball coaches feel about each one.
SPEAKER_05He's gonna say some crap like time. No, no, it's these are two set needs to be 20 minutes. No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_06That would have been a fit. I think you guys are gonna agree with all of them except for one. Okay, I think you I think and I'm gonna save that one for last. So number one, no more using of this stupid app that delays the game until all the bugs are worked out. You know that that uh the digital app, that volley score thing? It has delayed so many games.
SPEAKER_04Uh yeah, I like it. I like it too. I think it's actually super easy.
SPEAKER_06No, I like I said, I like the concept.
SPEAKER_05I do think there needs to be a piece of paper with this. I agree until they get it working.
SPEAKER_06Until they get it work. That that's that's really how it should have worked.
SPEAKER_05Because then you're wasting time to go get a piece of paper, right? Just oh, it's it's frozen. Or provide an iPad. Yes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I've been bringing my own iPad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I I'm gonna do that because I I tell the girls off the phone, right? Because they do that on their phone, slide out text, and then it's like, what's the score? And they're like two points. I'm like, yo, you can't be doing that. Oh, I haven't seen my kids do that. I'm like, yeah, I told them I get a no-no.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so that I'd I'm I that's that's the way I should wait. Paper as well, because we have all these long delays in all these games, and it makes us get out of there at 11 o'clock at night, and I don't like it.
SPEAKER_05Well, I'm a I'm a I'm a fan of it. Just let's keep it going. No, I yeah, the I the concept is good.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, because I don't know how to do the book anyway. So I like the idea.
SPEAKER_05Davis doesn't know how to coach either, so don't know. Hey, I'm undefeated as coach.
SPEAKER_06I'm undefeated. So, next one. Okay. Scoreboards on both sides of the court.
SPEAKER_04No, we did that this weekend and it sucked. Why? Because I had to provide a whole nother person to go sit in the bench and flip the score when everybody could just look at the one at the same time.
SPEAKER_05Yes, it was so annoying. Was it like that far?
SPEAKER_04So everybody could see that's is a great idea.
SPEAKER_06Soft. You guys are wrong.
SPEAKER_04You guys can just appoint a parent for each team to put it on their little iPad and they could flip their own score. People are getting soft, but that's the problem. Or bring their own flipper, but you know what? You know why it sucked? Because they were wrong half of the time. Like, and then my kids are yelling, yelling from the table at the girl. Look at the score, you got it wrong. Yeah, and or that one's wrong. You know, it was just a mess. Soft. I don't like it.
SPEAKER_06All right, so that's that's two two negatives on mine. Okay. I know you're gonna agree with this. No more 7 45 a.m. starts. Yeah, that's too early. Eight o'clock. Eight o'clock, that's the earliest we start. I don't do seven seven forty five is is eight o'clock is already hard enough. Eight is tough.
SPEAKER_05You know, honestly, I wouldn't mind at 7.45 at this point because I've been PM wave all season long. So it doesn't affect you. So it doesn't affect me. Yeah. But just give me the I don't understand.
SPEAKER_06Please. There's there's gotta be a reason to do it. But to me, it makes no sense. Why not just have a start eight? Yeah, no, it doesn't make any sense. Okay.
SPEAKER_04I'm assuming it has something to do with the referees and their schedules and something. I don't get it. I don't know what 15 minutes is, but yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_06Okay, um, two more on the last day of the tournament. No more guaranteed two matches. Oh, 100% agree with that. I knew you were gonna disagree with that. That is the dumbest thing ever. I hate that. I know.
SPEAKER_05I know.
SPEAKER_06I talked, so I went to I went to March Mayhem. March Mayhem. I went to talk to the tournament director, who's a great guy. He does a great job.
SPEAKER_04But I was like, um You need to stop is that how March Mayhem is.
SPEAKER_06Yes. So I asked, I was like, I was like, you guys aren't doing that whole two matches, because I didn't look ahead of time. You guys aren't doing the whole like guarantee two matches on the last day. He goes, Oh yeah, he goes, everybody loves that. No, no, we don't. I don't know who you're who you're polling, but I've never heard one person that likes that idea. And I I think that their heart is in the right place. You know, you're trying to give an you know, you're trying to give value for your money, blah blah blah. But you're done when you lost that last game on Sunday.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, and then you gotta ref and then you gotta play again, and then if you lose again, now you gotta ref again. Yeah, like it's a waste. Let's just not do it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, all right.
SPEAKER_04Your whole Sunday's gone, and it pushes the whole day, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, okay. Last one, and this is the one I know you guys are probably not gonna agree with, but I'm gonna justify it. No more doubles altogether. We get rid of that thing altogether, and I'll tell you why before you say yes or no, because nobody is remotely close to consistent with the call. They will some people will let things go and then they'll wait till the very they'll wait until it's a crucial point and they'll call it, or they'll call it one side and not the other. What's the point? What is the advantage? Is there really that big of an advantage to double the volleyball?
SPEAKER_05Yes, there's an advantage to doubling a volleyball. How? The spin of a ball.
SPEAKER_06Well, that makes it to play better defense. Oh my god. It's such a subject, it's such an accalled. Yeah, I just it's another judgment call that we don't need. No. Volleyball has so many judgment calls off unnecessary. Davis, you know how many times I've seen you looking on the exactly why they should get rid of it because nobody calls it consistently. If they called it consistently, if you're gonna call it, if everybody calls it, but every single you have to agree, every ref is different. I mean, yeah, they are. Every single ref they's gonna be a couple of things.
SPEAKER_05I think they're doing better calling it like if it's going over the net, like they're supposed to be.
SPEAKER_04I mean, yeah. Anyways, um, I think it just depends on the ref, obviously. But what I've kind of seen this year is like if they're not gonna call it, then they just don't call them call it. But then if they're gonna call it, they're gonna call it right away as soon as somebody doubles over the net. So it needs to say it still isn't consistent.
SPEAKER_06But you're going into a game not knowing what you have to wait for them to call it or not call it to know what you're going into.
SPEAKER_04Oh, maybe we should just start asking them before the game. Yeah, so do you call doubles or not?
SPEAKER_06What's your philosophy on doubles?
SPEAKER_05But at the same time, do your job as a player and and do what you're supposed to do.
SPEAKER_04Also, don't set the ball over the net. I'm sick of my kids doing that.
SPEAKER_06I don't think anybody like yeah, I don't Why are we doing that?
SPEAKER_04Just power tip it. Yeah, right?
SPEAKER_05One handed I think the double rule getting taken away is that it's honestly gonna be a lot easier for anyone to become a setter. And I think that's wrong. So we're about inclusion.
SPEAKER_06I'm talking about we're including, we're including everyone, anybody can do it.
SPEAKER_05I know, but I'm just saying in general, like I I let it go for the setters, like they could double a ball or whatever, but that one going over the net whoever's touching it, that needs to be called.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's not good. I don't like it. Sometimes I'm getting some points off of those, so if they if they would be consistent too.
SPEAKER_06If they would be consistent, I'm fine with it. But if not, I don't like it. So we'll see. I I bet you within within five years, they're gonna get rid of it. How much you want to bet? Five dollars.
SPEAKER_05I'm not betting on this. What they do need to do though is give us two liberos in high school. I was literally just gonna say they gotta have that. Okay, that has to change.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I should have put that. Can we just have all the rules be the same? Yeah, it's for high school and club. Because you know, high school, the whole stuff. Oh my god. The lineup shows the line-ups. I always screw it up. And in high school, what what drives me crazy about high school is the line. If you even look at that line, that midline underneath the net, the center line, yeah. The center line, if you look at that line, I mean you just step on it, like call it. You know what? Nobody can be around. Club, the girl can be crawling under the net. Crawl, like falling under the net.
SPEAKER_04I had a girl kick my player this weekend, they didn't even call it. I'm like, okay.
SPEAKER_05The like the ball wasn't by them.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, it's no, it needs to be the same though, because I don't know about you, but I have no idea how to do book for high school. Like you gotta, it's like rally scoring. You have to put something down every single play. It's been a while. I have no idea how to do it.
SPEAKER_06Every year I'm like, Who knows how to do a high school season? But that's the thing, like other like basketball, same, everything's the same. The rules are the same. You know, travel ball versus high school, and same for every other sport. I don't understand. I I honestly feel like they like to make volleyball as complicated as possible. It is one of the most complicated sports, like the rules, and there's so many rules. There have to be so many people to work it, work a match, and not and the and the average person, the average fan doesn't know half the rules.
SPEAKER_05You know what they should do? Provide provide R1s and R2s for everyone. I should have put that on my list.
SPEAKER_06I should have put that on my list.
SPEAKER_04And also they should start providing the electronic line judges like they do in college. Oh, that would be good. Just put the cameras on the line. Instant replay.
SPEAKER_06We should have instant replay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, just like college.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Boom. In. And oh, and I think I got all these rules are coming to me now. All these improvements. The tournaments should provide warm-up volleyballs. Yes, they should 100%.
SPEAKER_05Yes, just put it. I'm so sick of carrying those things around.
SPEAKER_06I know, I know. It's just a waste. I know. So, anyway, well, that is a wrap on today's show. Um, special thanks again to Brittany for joining us after a long weekend.
SPEAKER_04Um it's now midnight, so I know.
SPEAKER_05She really did it, not like for you, Davis. She did it so she could see it. Yeah, I haven't seen Elise in a long time. Our phone calls have been Hi, I miss you. Hi, I miss you too. Like, we really miss each other. Chicago? Oh, it's going to be a good one. But I have both my teams there. It's okay.
SPEAKER_04I'm very optimistic. They're both gonna go AM wave the second day. So we'll have the afternoon on Saturday.
SPEAKER_06So I'm not making any promises, but my plan is I'm gonna try to pack up the podcast equipment and we're gonna try to do some on in Chicago podcasting so we can bring on some of the coaches and you gotta make sure you uh pay for my check-in bag because I'm gonna need a new fit then if we're doing that. Elise with her big she's Lise is going on on a one-day trip and she's got two suitcases for tomorrow. It's the most ridiculous thing ever.
SPEAKER_03You should see my suitcase for Minnesota.
SPEAKER_06Insane.
SPEAKER_05I'm not even entertaining him. I'm not.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, please don't. Anyway, so um join us next week for our special guest, um, TBA. Oh, I'm like, who is it? We have surprise. Yeah, we haven't we haven't quite we haven't quite decided yet, so it will be a surprise. But again, thank you guys. Um, we will see you next week. Adios.
